I’m Kim Maclin, mamahood mentor and Certified Professional Life Coach, military spouse of 22 years, classroom teacher turned homeschooling mama to 3 amazing kiddos, and the host of this show. You really CAN have it all…the successful career, fun, connected relationships, and a home that feels like a refuge.

00:27:53
You wake up and think today is going to be different. You are going to be calm and kind and then out of nowhere, you lose your stuff.
You are really trying to stop yelling at your kids, but they don’t listen until you yell, so you revert back to what works, even though you feel junky about it and you can feel the rifts in your relationship growing deeper each time you react at them.
You find yourself back in that same place, oftentimes, even a short time after starting your day with them. You have no idea why you can't just pull it together and be the mama you want to be.
In working with and talking to many mamas through the years, I've found some common issues. In this episode, we'll be talking about these top three mistakes that are likely keeping you stressed out and reactive (even though you are really trying to stop yelling) and how you can create a calmer, more proactive, responsive home.

7 | 5 Areas Where Your Poor Boundaries are Keeping You Stressed Out and Reactive
00:28:09
Welcome back to the Joyful Mamahood podcast! We are continuing the conversation around the top 3 reasons you are stressed out and reactive and deep diving into reason number 3: you have poor boundaries.
Your boundaries are either too rigid or too loose. Most of the time I see mamas with undefined boundaries. The ones that are too loose, so that’s going to be the main focus today, but please know that rigid boundaries (strict schedules, inability to flex with the unexpected, rules that don’t really make sense, but you are the boss so it’s your way or the highway) can be just as damaging to your family and your sanity, so keep listening because you’ll still get tons of value from this episode.
Your kids don’t listen, your parents and friends overstep, you hold the line too firmly when it’s not important and too loose when it is. You don’t have boundaries in place that will help you thrive. So, let’s dive into the 5 areas where your lack of boundaries keeps you reactive and stressed out. Grab your notebook or notes app, because you are going to want to write these down. Let’s get started!

00:30:26

Honestly, it’s time to stop expecting your kids to have a great day after the first part of their day is filling with yelling, frustration, and conflict.
If you are nagging your kids every day to get dressed, brush their teeth, turn off the TV or put down their tablets and eat breakfast, while you are running around like a chicken with its head cut off throwing lunches together and shoving homework and papers in backpacks while you finish getting ready, only two swing into the drop off line when the final bell is ringing, this episode is for you.
And, if you are a homeschool mom who isn’t trying to get kids out the door first thing in the morning, I see you too and every single one of these tips will work for you as well and you won’t be that mom who shows up to coop 15 minutes late pushing your grumpy, obstinate kids through the door with a frazzled look realizing that you orphaned your coffee at home again. Listen in as I share seven tips with you that have really helped us get out the door ON TIME peacefully, without yelling, nagging and the inevitable mom guilt that follows, and I know they will help you too.

Ep 9 | The Dreaded Witching Hour and How to Eliminate It!
00:31:52
The dreaded witching hour. You know, that time that starts in the very late afternoon/early evening and can last until you get them in bed.
Everything is a battle.
From the babies who are fussy and crying to young kids pulling at your clothes, clinging to your legs, demanding to be held, melting down over every little thing school aged kids fighting, the homework battles, the teens who are over being told what to do and performing for other people full of attitude and dumping it all on you, to a grumpy husband coming home to a messy home, dinner not made, and everyone melting down.
You are just trying to get dinner on the table, get the kitchen clean, the homework done, the kids cleaned, and everyone in bed. Everything is out of control. You are anxious and stressed out. You are more reactive, which just makes things worse. You just want it all to stop so you can focus on all the things that need to be done.
In this episode, we are going to talk about why is it happening and what changes you can make right now to eliminate the dreaded witching hour in your home.

Ep 11 | 7 Steps to Decode Your Triggers, so You Can Stop Losing Your Cool
00:26:45
Nothing can trigger you quite like these children you are raising. They are always watching, storing information in their minds, and reflecting back the very things you don't like in yourself.
And then you throw in the fact that these tiny humans have wants, needs, and agendas that often differ from yours. It's the perfect storm to losing your cool.
Their behavior triggers you. Their attitudes trigger you. Their messes trigger you. Their speed triggers you.
Here's the thing, Mama...it's not your kiddo's responsibility to not trigger you. It's your responsibility to identify your triggers, heal your wounds, and uncover the belief systems that are creating the thoughts that have you triggered in the first place.
Listen in as we discuss 7 questions to ask yourself in order to decode your triggers so that you can stop losing your cool and be a calm, connected, responsive parent.

Ep 12 | 3 Steps to Turn it Around Once You've Already Lost Your Cool
00:23:09
When someone triggers you and you lose control, you lose your power.
The moment you become blinded by emotion and start yelling, threatening, punishing, shaming, or blaming you have lost the control you are desperately trying to grab on to.
When you lose your cool, you lose their respect and their trust and as a result, you lose your influence.
When your kids don’t feel connected to you or are fearful of you, you lose your place of wisdom, of mentorship, and you lose the opportunity to empower them and encourage them in their growth and the ability to advocate for themselves and their needs in a positive, respectful, effective way.
So what’s a parent to do when you are already eyeballs deep in the thick of losing your ever loving mind?
Listen in to this week’s episode, because I’ve got three steps to turn it around once it’s already hit the fan and you’ve totally lost your cool.

Ep 13 | Repairing Broken Relationships After You've Already Lost Your Cool
00:27:56
You’ve lost your cool. You’ve threatened, you’ve punished, you’ve shamed, you’ve blamed, you’ve spanked them or sent them to time out or to their rooms, you’ve yelled, you’ve thrown things. Your adult tantrum was just as bad, if not way worse than theirs was.
No shame mama. I’ve been there, and sometimes if I am completely honest, I can still find myself having my own little hissy fit. Yelling to be heard, barking orders, hurting feelings, watching my kids’ faces scared, unsure of what would happen next, frozen, shutting down, withdrawing, retreating, yelling back in defense, or melting into sobs as they ran away from me.
So, the question is…how do you repair those broken, torn relationships after you have already lost your cool and the damage is done? Well, grab something warm to drink and curl up with your notebook and a cozy blanket for this candid and vulnerable conversation with a friend as I get real and share some of my less-than-finest moments and how we bounced back from those, once the damage was already done.

00:28:44
Hey sweet mama! I see you trying to raise your babies, run a successful business, manage your home, and keep your marriage from falling apart all without losing your ever-loving mind.
I believe that marriages thrive when spouses prioritize each other and communicate effectively with each other.
When men don’t feel replaced by the kids, and women feel supported and don’t carry the burdens of the home and the children on their own, the family operates more like a connected team, everyone is more pleasant to be around, the family has more fun together, and everyone feels more appreciated and fulfilled.

Ep 15 | Nov. #HeyKim: You Ask, I Answer
00:32:29
Do you wish you had a coach in your back pocket where you could just ask anything and get some help?
Sometimes our kids sure can stump us and when we are trying to take a road less traveled or we don’t have mamahood mentors in our lives, we don’t really know what to do.
You can bring your questions to facebook groups, but maybe you don’t get a detailed response or are just given tips, but don’t know the why behind the action, or maybe you go to a mommy group and you just get a lot of empathy, but no support to actually solve the problem (at best), or at worst, no empathy at all and you are just told to suck it up because if you think this is hard, you are really going to have a hard time with the next stage.
Well, fortunately, you won’t find any of that here!
And I am rolling out a once-a-month experience just for you, my listeners, and the Joyful Mamahood community.
Listen in mama, because this one is going to bless your socks off. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
Coaching Topics discussed:
Preschooler's Undesirable Behavior
Pre-teen/Tween not doing what they "should" be able to do

Ep 16 | The #1 Thing You Can Do to Boost Your Mood and Productivity when Things Feel Disappointing and Stagnant
00:13:44
You know that feeling you get when things don’t seem to be going the way you think they should go? Then, as a result, you find yourself in this negative spiral where life just looks really down. You start focusing on all the things that are not going well. Ruminating on your disappointment, those sad, bitter, angry disappointed feelings. Focusing on what’s not working.
We’ve all been there. And, if we aren’t consciously aware of what’s going on and all the negativity we are breeding and feeding, it can keep us in a place of stagnant inactivity.
Stuck, not moving forward. Circulating all of those thoughts in our minds, hyperfocused on what’s not going going well, unable to make forward progress to meet our goals or grow in our relationships with God, ourselves, or others in a healthy way.
Listen in as we chat about the #1 thing you can do to boost your mood and productivity when you are feeling disappointed and stagnant.

Ep 17 | How DARE You Disrespect Me: The #1 Way to Get The Respect You Are Fighting For
00:31:05
So many times we view our kids' behavior through a lens of disrespect. Sometimes, as they get older, they do intend to be disrespectful BUT, even then (actually, ESPECIALLY THEN), it is our job as the parents to decode what that disrespectful behavior is telling us. **It's also our job to keep our cool in the face of that disrespect.** Our own conditioning and the way we were raised tempts us to react with phrases like, "How dare you disrespect me like that!" followed by a punishment, "Go to your room! You are grounded for 30 days!"
Unfortunately, when we react that way, we lose the very respect, voice, and authority in their lives that we are seeking. Listen in as we talk about the #1 way to gain the respect we are seeking from our kiddos.

Ep 18 | The top 3 reasons you aren’t getting things done
00:29:27
You can’t sit down and focus on any one thing for more than 3.6 minutes before your mind wanders or you get up to do something else. To include playing with your kids or being intimate with your spouse.
On the rare occasion that you are doing the right thing at the right time, someone or something comes in to hijack your time with the next emergency.
While it seems like it can be no other way and every time to turn around you hear other moms repeating and confirming these truths that resonate with you and your life, the reason that it upsets you so much is that you see women who aren’t constantly stressed out, worn thin, and completely overwhelmed and behind in everything and you wish it could be that way for you too.
Well, take heart sweet mama, because I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t have to be running around like a chicken with your head cut off and you really do have time to everything that is important to you.
You don’t have to clean all the time to have a clean house
You don’t have to be running around putting out fires and tending to emergencies all day
You don’t have to live in this space just because you have kids.
Listen in to discover the top 3 reasons you aren’t getting things done and feel like you are always behind.

00:33:50
Do you walk into a room and find yourself completely overwhelmed with the amount of stuff in it? Piles on the counter, dishes in the sink, toys on the floor.
From cluttered closets to overflowing garages, our possessions often have a way of encroaching upon our mental and physical spaces. It makes us feel edgy, irritable, and overwhelmed and adds to the already heavy mental load we carry as moms.
We end up at a place where we don’t even want t be at home, so we go to a place that makes us feel better.
We go to Target, grab a Starbucks, and walk around, avoiding the stuff that needs to be done, thinking about how behind we are, but this is self-care, right? We deserve that "me time" after all.
We put things in our carts for a dopamine hit that makes us feel really, really good in the moment, but then we bring that stuff home and we just add to the chaos and the clutter.
That new toy we thought was going to make our kid happy is tossed aside 5 minutes later and the new body wash that you got because it smelled so good, is now in your shower and the other one that is only ¾ of the way done is now sitting on your already cluttered counters because there is no room for it in your overflowing cabinets, but it's too much to just throw away.
In this second episode of our series about boundaries, we will uncover the secrets to transforming our relationship with stuff, reclaiming our space, and finding the freedom that comes from establishing healthy boundaries.

Ep 35 | Reclaiming Your Time: Healthy Boundaries for Busy Moms
00:27:08
We all know how it feels to juggle numerous roles as moms, from caretakers to professionals, multitaskers, mom taxis, chefs, cleaners, chaos coordinators, household managers, homework finders, boo-boo kissers, and calendar keepers.
In this fast-paced world, chock full of societal and familial conditioning, as well as external and internal expectations, it's easy to overlook our own needs and well-being because we just don't have time.
The truth is, you have time for everything that is a priority to you, but as moms, we're often caught up in a cycle of constantly saying 'yes' to everyone and everything, spreading ourselves thin in the process.
In this episode, we continue the conversation around boundaries, shifting into one of the most important boundaries busy moms need to create more peaceful, connected, and harmonious homes.
Boundaries around our time.
I'll be sharing 3 reasons moms struggle with not having enough time, 5 steps to align how you spend your time with your values and priorities, and revealing how creating (and honoring) healthy boundaries helps us reclaim our time for the activities that nourish our souls and ensure that we have time for everything that is a priority for us.

00:13:46
Your kids resist cleaning up after themselves, putting away their laundry, getting ready for bed, and a whole host of other responsibilities.
You get frustrated, thinking this is something that is SO simple and they should just be able to do it without you even asking, but at least with just a gentle prod.
Instead, they resist and resist and resist, so you nag, threaten, or punish. What if there were a different way?
In this episode I walk you through getting down to the root of the resistance, so everyone gets their needs met and the job gets done and share what that looked like in action in my family recently.

Ep 42 | Cultivating a Spirit of Fun: Embracing Playfulness as a Mom
00:42:45
Grow up. Stop playing around. Act your age. Stop being so silly. From the time we were little, we’ve been inundated with messages that have conditioned the playfulness out of most of us.
Then you throw in the serious business of raising kids, keeping them alive, making sure they are well fed, respect their elders, make good choices, don’t get hurt, are kind to others, get good grades, do their chores, pick up their messes, all while we rush around to get them where they need to be, care for our homes, and try to balance work, volunteering, our marriages, and a social life, while barely being able to care for our basic needs is enough to snuff out whatever ember of playfulness might still be left, hiding deep inside.
It's no wonder we feel uptight. In this episode of the Joyful Mamahood podcast, we are rekindling that little light within you that longs for things to feel lighter and more fun as we cultivate a spirit of fun within ourselves and our families.

Ep 44 | Beating Disaster with Carrie Conrad: Keeping Our Kids Safe when the World Feels Scary
00:36:24
Keeping our kids safe in a world that can seem incredibly scary at times while also letting them be kids is a top priority for every parent. In this episode, Kim sits down with Carrie Conran of Beating Disaster to talk about effective prevention methods to keep our kids safe without instilling a spirit of fear of unnecessary anxiety in them (or in us).
We talked about how to let our kids be kids without being helicopter moms, how to make them a hard target, so they are undesirable to the people we don’t want wanting them, the importance of not “scaring our kids straight, playtime as a powerful tool for teaching kids about boundaries, safety, and self-protection, and what to do when your kids are exposed to inappropriate content online.
We dug into how common parenting methods, while well-intended, could inadvertently make kids more vulnerable and what to do instead, and how being fully present and caring for ourselves as moms contributes to the overall safety and well-being of our kids.
You may want to pop you ear buds in for this episode. There is nothing inappropriate, but we do talk about some things that could create a spirit of fear in little listeners.

Ep 45 | Rest as Restoration: Reclaiming Your Time and Energy as a High-Achieving Mom
00:20:44
No rest for the weary…
What if that’s the problem? What if we are weary because we see rest as a luxury and not as a necessity.
Rest = Restoration.
As ambitious moms, who want to do everything with excellence, the belief that we have to be doing something runs deep.
We constantly rush from one thing to another and back again, priding ourselves on our ability to multitask, but wondering why we are exhausted and our to-do list is never done.
What if there is another way?
What if the way to get more done more efficiently without compromising a job well done is actually found in rest?
And what if more time, more energy, and more present, connected relationships is a side effect of that rest.
Join me as we explore the concept of rest as restoration and the benefits that come with prioritizing that.
