"Sir, Please" is a brilliant band whose days of making a splash on the musical scene are just getting started. In a Journey to the Stage first, I was joined by the entire band, which includes twins Shane (vocals) and Josh (bass) Cronin, Michael Leese (guitar) and drummer David Kohn. We dig into the band's origin story and all the fun and challenges that come with developing a unique sound. In this blast of a conversation, the band discusses what it's like playing to a packed venue in support of REO Speedwagon, compared to a club of bouncing fans.

We play two outstanding songs from the band's debut album, "Simply Loved and Lingered On," which lovers of good music will enjoy thoroughly. If you like alternative pop rock (and you should), you will love "Sir, Please."

Burn the Jukebox have been burning up the internet for the last few years and have made a name for themselves by playing some of the best Rock and Pop songs of the past few decades. This group of highschoolers caught the attention of music lovers by rocking songs from everyone from Hendrix, to Journey to Lady Gaga. As now-seasoned musicians and artists, Burn the Jukebox is writing their own powerhouse and catchy songs that prove they are much more than a "cover band."

In this fun interview, I sat down with the band's bassist and co-vocalist, Virginia Franks, and chat about the band's journey so far. As the youngest guest I've interviewed (age 17), Virginia is the youthful end of the female bass players I've had, with the oldest guest I've had, the Queen of Bass herself, Carol Kaye (age 87 when I interviewed her).

This may be the debut album of the Staudt Brothers, but these Texas gents are musical veterans. Their new album, "Livewire Priest," is filled with songs that are road tested and built on a foundation of memorable hooks, gritty guitars, powerhouse vocals, and a rhythm section that is taking no prisoners. Produced by fellow-Texans Zack Kibodeaux, Greg Essington and Kyle Smith of Blue Water Highway, "Livewire Priest" is stirring up some Texas dust and is an album that needs to be heard. 

This chat with Caleb Staudt (lead vocals, guitar, and principal songwriter) and David Stockton (bass, goat harmonizer. True story) was a blast and a half. Blue Water Highway's Zack Kibodeaux makes an (almost) surprise appearance to talk about working with the band in the studio.

Jonathan Dinklage is a world class violinist and violist who has recorded and toured with some of the biggest and most talented artists of our time- with names like David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and many more. His dream gig was being invited to tour with RUSH as part of the band's string ensemble for their Clockwork Angels tour. We chat about being the lead violinist on Broadway's HAMILTON and explore the origin story of Jonathan, including being raised in a home that launched Jonathan's and his brother, actor Peter Dinklage's careers. We spend the bulk of our time talking about his time touring with RUSH. Jonny gives us an insight into that tour and working closely with RUSH, like few others can.

We had a surprise appearance by Jonathan's sweet little girl at the end of our chat, which topped of our chat wonderfully.

James Horner composed music for over 160 films during the course of his remarkable career. Among his many works are music scores for some of the biggest films in Hollywood history, like Avatar and Titanic, and epic films such as Braveheart and Glory. But beyond all of the big movies; beyond the multiple Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes and countless other awards, was a quiet and private man who was quirky and complex. No one knew James better than his wife, Sara Horner.

In this exclusive interview, Sara helps us to see James in a way that no one else can. We are escorted into the home and the world that James grew up in during our conversation. We learn how James' father, Harry, played a significant part of shaping James into the man he would become. Sara shares about James' work routine, his work ethic, and describes what the ride was like as James journeyed from a young composer working on small student films, to becoming one of the most successful and famous composers in History.

Carol Kaye is a towering musical legend who's considered to be one of the most prolific bassists in Rock and Pop music history. With over 10,000 recording sessions under her belt, and an integral part of The Wrecking Crew studio musicians, Carol recorded with them all- The Beach Boys, Glen Campbell, Frank Sinatra, The Righteous Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel (to name a few), and helped give birth to Rock n Roll by playing on songs like "La Bamba" and "Donna" by Ritchie Valens.

In the Spring of 2023, Carol and I spent two hours on the phone together, in what amounts to be one the most comprehensive interviews Carol has done. We cover lots of ground and any fan of Carol's career, legacy, and music history, will enjoy what Carol shares.

M Ross Perkins is a multi-instrumentalist, and singer/songwriter, who draws the best of psychedelic rock sound into the modern age. His song crafting has been compared to that of Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney and Harry Nilsson. With several decades in the music industry, Wayne Kirkpatrick has had a monumental career that shows no signs of slowing down. In the early 80s, Wayne formed partnerships and friendships with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith and would go on to co-write with both of them for many years and many albums, helping to write some of the most popular songs in the CCM space. The impact Wayne has had in the careers of those two great talents cannot be overstated. 

Along with Tommy Simms and previous Journey to the Stage guest, Gordon Kennedy, Wayne co-wrote "Change the World," which was made popular by Eric Clapton, for which Wayne won a Grammy for Song of the Year. That group of three writers (Kirkpatrick, Simms and Kennedy) wrote all of the music for Garth Brook's album, "In the Life of Chris Gaines."

Songs Wayne has written have been sung by artists like Faith Hill, Peter Frampton, Joe Cocker, Rich Mullins, Bonnie Raitt, Trisha Yearwood and many many more.

Wayne and his brother Karey Kirkpatrick, who is a very successful movie director, producer and screenwriter (Chicken Run, The Rescuers Down Under, James and the Giant Peach and many more) wrote the smash-hit Broadway musical, "Something Rotten," which was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, and winner of one. Currently the Kirkpatrick brothers are taking the new musical adaptation of "Mrs. Doubtfire" (for which they wrote the music and lyrics) to stage in England with plans to bring it to the States and to Broadway.

This conversation with Wayne is filled with stories from the "inside" of the CCM world. Wayne pulls the curtain back on the herculean effort it takes to write a musical, revealing a personal side to the adventure so rarely seen by the public. I hope you all enjoy it.

Trapper Schoepp is a musical force to be reckoned with. His brand new album, "Siren Songs," is his strongest effort to date, and was recorded in the Cash Cabin, a retreat and private recording studio built by the legendary Man in Black, himself, Johnny Cash. 

With fourteen songs in hand, Trapper arrived at the fabled cabin with Jayhawks multi-instrumentalist, John Jackson, and Wilco basset, Pat Sansone to produce Trapper's new album. 

Trapper and I dig into his musical journey and how he ended up the youngest person to share a songwriting credit with another musical legend, Bob Dylan.

You might not know the name Ron Hicklin, but you certainly know his voice. Ron and his singing group, "The Ron Hicklin Singers," sang on over 100 #1 hit songs with artists like Sinatra, Elvis, Dean Martin, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Ringo Starr, Glen Campbell, Michael Jackson, The Carpenters, and many, many more. His group is considered "The Wrecking Crew" of vocalists, and frequently recorded on albums with that famous group of world class studio musicians. Ron's group provided the vocals (along with David Cassidy) for The Partridge Family. 

Ron was a "ghost singer" for The Monkees, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Lettermen, and others, being featured vocally, but often uncredited and unknown by the public.

For 40 years, Ron and others he hired, were the singing voices of Alvin and the Chipmunks on albums like "The Chipmunks Sing The Beatles' Hits."

Through the 60s and 70s, The Ron Hicklin Singers sang scores of TV theme songs for shows like Batman, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Love, American Style and countless others.

The memorable commercial jingle, "You Deserve a Break Today" for McDonalds and many dozens more were sung by Ron and his group. 

Ron's ubiquitous group of world class singers, including a previous podcast guest, Sally Stevens, lent their vocal talent to film score in hundreds of films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Glory, Apollo 13, The Godfather and on and on.

In our wonderful conversation, Ron shares rich stories about his friendships with Glen Campbell and Leon Russell. He shares how a recording session with Elvis for the 1968 Comeback Special, made a fan out of Ron. 

If you love music, this chat reveals a slice of music history that is unparalleled. Ron has been retired for many years and doesn't do many interviews, so this is a genuine treat. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Singer-songwriter, Robin Taylor Zander, son of Cheap Trick vocalist, Robin Zander, took advantage of the instruments he grew up around by learning to play a variety of them. Spending summers on the road with his dad and soaking in the sonics of Rock from his earliest days helped form RTZ into a songwriter with an exceptional sense of melody and songcrafting. As a touring member of Cheap Trick, where he has filled in on drums, bass, and lead guitar as the need arose, RTZ has become an integral part of the band as a rhythm guitar player and background vocalist.

Robin's DEBUT album, The Distance, is out NOW, and it is an album of high caliber that I HIGHLY recommend. In our chat, RTZ talks about growing up in a Rock n Roll family, how he became part of Cheap Trick, and writing and recording his new album and much more. This is a fun chat with a genuine artist with great writing and performing prowess.

Stephen McCarthy has been at the leading edge of genre creation, a claim few can make. With the founding of The Long Ryders in the early 80s, the band was helping lay the foundation for what would eventually be called "Americana." Stephen walks us through the rise, fall, and return of The Long Ryders. We dig into the band's BRAND NEW album, 'September November," and play the song, "Seasons Change," a McCarthy composition. 

Stephen and I spend some time chatting about how he joined Americana greats, The Jayhawks, for their classic album, "Rainy Day Music," and the subsequent tour. Part of our Jayhawks related conversation reveals how Jayhawks founder, Mark Olson, was almost a member of The Long Ryders.

With recent release of "When Night Comes Falling," an album Stephen made with famed producer and songwriter, Carla Olson, we play the title track and get the backstory on that decades long friendship and the wonderful album that friendship produced.

Grammy Award winning songwriter and vocalist Bryan Duncan has had a 50+ year career that began in the Jesus Movement. His seminole group, The Sweet Comfort Band, helped launch modern CCM. After going solo in the mid 1980s, Bryan's soulful vocals, songwriting skills and fun personality, helped him to reach the upper echelon in the CCM world. In this in-depth two-part conversation, Bryan and I cover the earliest of days inside the Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa tent, all the way through to what he's doing today. 

Bryan's honesty and dry wit made for a truly interesting conversation filled with insights gained by man who has the gift of being able to look back at where he's been.

Bryan's music has been deeply meaningful to me for over 40 years, often bringing solace and comfort at just the right time. I am grateful for this other Bryan with a Y.

Michael Lockwood has had a long and fascinating musical career. He has worked with artists like the late (and former spouse) Lisa Marie Presley, Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Carly Simon, Susanna Hoffs and many more, as a songwriter, producer, touring or studio musician. This one-time son in law of Elvis Presley had his first foray into the musical spotlight with his band, Lions & Ghosts, where Michael was a cowriter and guitar player. Lions & Ghosts' first album, "Velvet Kiss, Lick of the Lime" has just been remastered, rereleased, and made available digitally for streaming for the first time. The powerfully anthemic album is an unknown gem that is filled with great hooks, timeless production and musical and vocal performances that exemplify the best of 80s Rock n Roll. Giving this album a spin will show the listener why Lions & Ghosts were taken on the road with powerhouse bands like Guns N Roses, The Church, Gene Loves Jezebel, Love and Rockets, The Alarm and many more.

Veteran singer-songwriter Maia Sharp proves once again that she has great songcrafting and storytelling skills with her latest album, "Reckless Thoughts." Maia has written for artists like Trisha Yearwood, Bonnie Raitt and Cher. I first became familiar with Maia's work when she teamed up with Buddy Mondlock to help write and record an album ("Everything Waits to Be Noticed") with legendary vocalist, Art Garfunkel.

No one in the world has a voice like Russ Taff. With 6 Grammys to his name and more Dove Awards than one could count, Russ has nothing left to prove in the world of music. With all of that success to stand on, Russ has recorded an album that is as real as it gets. "Cover Story" is raw, beautiful and powerful. 

Russ and I chatted for almost two hours late Fall 2024 as he began the final stages of producing his new album. What transpired was a conversation that was brutally honest, filled with stories of Russ' past, stories that helped shape the man who Russ is today. In this first of two segments of our conversation, we begin by talking about the new album, which get released on January 31, 2025! Russ and I discuss the brutal childhood he had and the alcoholism he would later battle as an adult.

This episode, parts 1 and 2, are filled with hope and redemption. The transparency Russ exhibits has helped countless others have the boldness and freedom they needed in order to open up about their own stories.

As a founding member of multi-platinum selling Soul Asylum, and super group, The Golden Smog, which features  members of Wilco, The Jayhawks, Big Star and Run Westy, Run, Grammy Award-winning Dan Murphy has spent decades creating a catalog of great music. Despite his success, in 2012 Dan put his guitar in its case and walked away from music, citing burnout and a lack of joy in playing. After roughly ten years away, a chance meeting of singer/songwriter Jeff Arundel would reignite Dan's dormant love of writing, playing and recording music- and out came his trusty gold top Les Paul.

The resulting album from this musical odd couple is nothing short of incredible. Dan and I spend some time talking about the rise, plateau and challenges of Soul Asylum. From having multi-platinum selling albums and winning a Grammy, to not being on speaking terms, Dan walks us through it all with a lighthearted honesty. We talk Golden Smog and the possibility of a new album from that band that has been quiet since 2007.

Dan shares how he's found joy again in writing and recording music, and we play a couple of cuts from The Scarlet Goodbye's debut album, "Hope's Eternal." The album is OUT NOW and I give it 5 out of 5 stars. It's a gem of an album.

Malcolm Guite is a man of many facets. He is a poet with a deep appreciation for the classical form and higher realms of language. Equal parts songwriter, author, ordained priest in the Church of England, avid reader and academic, Malcolm brings these beautiful colors into one of the most fascinating conversations I have had on my podcast. 

Malcolm and I cover a wide range of topics with one of the highlights of this first installment being a reading he does from The Fellowship of the Ring. Wayne Everett is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter with a musical history that spans decades. He has been an integral part of bands like The Prayer Chain, Starflyer59, The Lassie Foundation and CUSH- all bands that have made incredible music but are criminally underexposed. As a solo artist, Wayne has written and recorded two solo albums, the latest of which is titled, "Two Ghosts," a collection of wonderfully-crafted songs with echoes of Laurel Canyon reverberating throughout.

In Part 1 of this Upclose & Personal conversation with multi-Grammy and multi-Dove Award winning vocalist John Schlitt, we spend considerable time walking through his formative years and the impact of bands like The Beach Boys and Beatles. Long before he was the vocalist of the most powerful and impactful band in Christian Rock history, John found success in the Rock band, Head East, where drug and alcohol abuse would bring him to the lowest of low points. But that is NOT the end of John's journey, and John shares about how he disappeared for several years, only to be found by Petra founder, Bob Hartman. 

John shares his deep and personal feelings about the Petra songs, "Thankful Heart" and "Prayer," and we chat about the first time I saw Petra on the Back to the Streets Tour on 9/25/86 at Point Loma Nazarene College (San Diego) and a moment that has stuck with me for 37 years.

A very special thank you to John Schlitt for being so open and transparent, and so generous with his time. I met John first in September of 1986 just before the band was going to take the stage. Very few people had the distinct pleasure of singing with the King of Rock n' Roll, Elvis Presley, but both of my guests DID! Ron Hicklin and Sally Stevens are two living legends in the vocal world. Many have heard of "The Wrecking Crew" studio musicians who played on endless smash hits on some of the greatest music ever made. Sally and Ron, and their respective team of vocalists are the equivalent to that famous group of musicians.

Sally has worked with Hollywood's greatest film composers like John Williams, Alan Sylvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Danny Elfman and so many more, where her voice can be heard in hundreds of films such as The Sound of Music, Forrest Gump, Jumanji, Beetlejuice, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Deadpool 2. This is part two of a very in depth and open conversation I had with Glen Phillips. In this portion of our chat, Glen shares what led to the demise of Toad the Wet Sprocket and how those relational patterns have changed in a way that allows the band to stay together after reforming. Glen shares about how the band sought to differentiate themselves from their contemporaries in the music world and how that trait has helped them maintain an audience. We dive into deep topics like grief, the enduring pursuit of emotional high points, how they can be addictive and how being on stage can feed into that. 

Our chat moves into songwriting, where Glen gives the fullest answer I have heard him give to date regarding what he requires to be creative and how that has gotten harder over time. The Dream Syndicate is one of the few bands that have been a part of starting a new movement in the Rock world. With equal doses of The Velvet Underground, Black Flag, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, The Dream Syndicate helped create what would later be known as Alternative Rock. In this two part conversation, Steve Wynn and I track his personal musical journey, through his first band at 9 years old, all the way through his next solo album coming out this year.

Steve and I dig into his earliest musical influences, solo career, his friendship with Long Ryder's guitarist Stephen McCarthy as well as the rocket rise of The Dream Syndicate, the descent and demise of the band, and reforming many years later. 

This was a wonderful and genuine conversation filled with great history, insight and candor by one of my favorite songwriters, Steve Wynn. I hope you enjoy it. Peter, Paul and Mary, the iconic folk trio of the 1960s, achieved remarkable success and left an indelible mark on the American music landscape and social conscience. With their rich and unforgettable harmonies and lyrics that led the charge for societal change, they became the voice of a generation, producing timeless hits like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane." Their influence extended beyond music, contributing significantly to the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements of the era. Following the group's disbandment, Noel Paul Stookey embarked on a solo career, where he continued to enchant audiences with his poignant songwriting and soulful performances. His solo work, characterized by its spiritual and introspective themes, further solidified his reputation as a distinguished and impactful artist in the folk music genre.

In this most memorable conversation, Noel and I cover the span of his life, from learning what harmony is by singing as a child with his father, through the highs of Peter, Paul, and Mary, to his wonderful solo career. The highlight is being treated to a special performance of "Wedding Song (There is Love)"

 

Noel is one of my musical heroes, whose voice has been part of my life for as long as I could remember, and it was a great honor to have such a delightful conversation with him.

As the oldest daughter of Country superstar Glen Campbell, Debbie Campbell had a special insight into her father's life and journey in a way that no one else did. In this concluding portion of my in-depth conversation with legendary guitarist and artist, Phil Keaggy, we cover a wide range of topics. It was an honor to connect with one of my favorite vocalist, songwriters and lyricists, Glen Phillips. Glen is the voice and principal songwriter for Toad the Wet Sprocket, a band he helped form when he was just 15. This "Upclose & Personal" special interview is filled with an honest and open dialogue about the early years of the band, how critics impacted Glen, and the realization that there is beauty in embracing grief. Glen opens up about how the community that formed online around his music during the lockdown has helped him to see the audience in a very different way. We talk at length about songs such as "I Will Not Take These Things for Granted," and much, much more. Sisters Eleanor and Bonnie Whitmore are accomplished musicians, singers, songwriters, instrumentalists and artist apart from each other. Eleanor and her husband Chris Masterson comprise the harmony rich group, The Mastersons, and Bonnie has forged her career as a rockin' solo artist. Over the last 20+ years, Emmy Award winning composer Bear McCreary has created a beautiful, powerful and impressive body of work that spans across media forms. With sprawling musical diversity, Bear has composed for video games, television and film, becoming one of the most sought-after composers in Hollywood.

As a 35 year fan of the music of The Smithereens, it was a genuine pleasure to chat with founding member and drummer, Dennis Diken. We discuss the path the band has traveled, navigating the heights of success and the sadness of losing singer an band mate, the late Pat Dinizio. Dennis and I spend most of our time discussing The Smithereen's brand new album (out now!!!), which was recorded in the early 90s with Pat on vocals, and how it sat until recently when it was made ready for release. We play a couple cuts from the album and dig into their backstory.

There are interviews, and there are interviews. This is a conversation that I will never forget. In this concluding portion of my chat with Russ Taff, we pick up where we left off in part one, where I asked Russ if his 1987 self-titled album was a cry for help. 

 

These two episodes with Russ will go down as one of the most impactful interviews I've ever done. I am thankful for Russ' authenticity and fearlessness. It is a brave man who can open himself up to the world, but Russ' desire to help others outstrips his desire for self-protection and self-preservation.

Blue Water Highway stands at the top of the list of bands I have come across in the last several years, so it was a real honor for me to sit down with founding members Zack Kibodeaux (primary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist) and Greg Essington (multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, would-be zombie apocalypse survivor). 

In this fun and insightful conversation, we dig into the band's origins, their recording history and the hard work they've put into getting to where they are in an often hostile music environment.
