24 Dec 2018 | Episode 060 - The Word Press Guru: A Conversation with Miriam Schwab | 01:02:11
ABOUT THIS EPISODE Miriam Schwab's life story reflects that of many olim (immigrants): ambivalent, halting beginnings eventually give way to a mature and successful Israeli life, filled with professional accomplishment and the pursuit of big dreams. Growing up in Toronto, Canada, Miriam was always enamored with "tech" - early computers and the various coding languages that powered them. Eventually she found a home in the Word Press community, becoming one of its greatest experts, and among the only females with that designation. A web development company she started earned her a steady living, but she had designs on something much more ambitious: creating lighting fast, impenetrably secure and environmentally friendly web services. Her new company, Stratic, does just that, and she is quickly driving it towards broad commercial viability. In this wide-ranging conversation, we cover the topics of the vicissitudes of aliyah; the Israeli - and Jerusalem - startup scene; the challenges faced by women - and particularly religious women - as founders; and much more. Miriam is brilliant but unpretentious, ambitious but warm, and a sterling model of the new economy in the Jewish State. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. 07 May 2018 | Episode 035 - The Pioneering Israeli Newswoman: A Conversation with Sivan Rahav-Meir | 00:44:10
ABOUT THIS EPISODE Sivan Rahav-Meir is a true anomaly in Israeli society: a popular TV news anchor, commentator and columnist, but also a fully and publicly observant Jewish woman. Growing up in the upscale Tel Aviv suburb of Herzaliya, Sivan had a penchant for interviewing others from the age of six, beginning with her classmates and teachers, and eventually branching out to broader society. She became a "child star," appearing on youth programs, interviewing prime ministers and celebrities, and already worked professionally in the field while still a teenager. Around that time, she also discovered a passion for her Jewish roots, which until then had remain unexplored. As she matured in both her faith and her career, Sivan eventually came to see her calling in the changing world of "new media" as synthesizing these twin passions, and she began teaching and speaking on these topics. Quickly, her daily Torah posts - since compiled in to a book named #Parsha - went viral, and her weekly Jerusalem Parsha (Torah Portion) class attracted over 700 live participants, with many more followers online. Along the way, Sivan has pioneered a new model of public discourse about Judaism, and "mainstreamed" many topics previously not addressed in some corners of Israeli society. While maintaining her role as a popular news reporter and writer, today Sivan speaks around the country and around the world, sharing an infectious message of unity and optimism, anchored to a timeless Jewish harbor. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. 25 Feb 2019 | Episode 069 - The Tech Connector: A Conversation with Hillel Fuld | 00:39:15
ABOUT THIS EPISODE Hillel Fuld has built an entire brand - and career - as the consummate connector. An aficionado of all things tech, Hillel began vlogging - covering companies and products - years ago, steadily building a serious following. Along the way, he became: a formal or informal strategic advisor to hundreds of emerging companies; a brand ambassador for major international corporations; a middleman between investors and growing startups; a lecturer at conferences worldwide and prolific speaker for groups visiting Israel; and ultimately a founder of his own recent enterprise. While Hillel doesn't sleep much, he does spend every night with his family, insisting on the sacredness of family time. He also represents the Jewish community with great integrity both online and in the halls of corporate tech power. Hillel's "no strings attached" approach to giving is a breath of fresh air in a space where relationships are often commodities to be monetized rather than opportunities to assist others in need. His forthcoming book on the subject is sure to offer many more counter-intuitive nuggets amplifying this theme. Find Hillel Fuld across social media, including his active Twitter (@HilzFuld), Instagram and Facebook feeds. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. 19 Nov 2018 | Episode 056 - The Aish.com Founder: A Conversation with Nechemia Coopersmith | 00:51:38
ABOUT THIS EPISODE Growing up as a teenager in Toronto, Nechemia Coopersmith was always a truth-seeker. So when his older brother Eric went off to study in Israel, he naturally determined to learn more, and ultimately discovered a similar path, counter-cultural for its time but authentic in its fidelity to ancient roots. The Internet era dawned as Coopersmith was in the middle of a career in Jerusalem of formal and informal education and outreach. Though completely ignorant of its inner workings, he intuited its immense potential to reach Jews worldwide on a scale and in a scope never before possible. Educating himself, gaining the blessing of legendary Aish HaTorah founder Rabbi Noach Weinberg, assembling a small team, and securing a half-million-dollar seed grant from a Los Angeles philanthropist, Coopersmith began building what became one of the highest trafficked Jewish sites on the World Wide Web. Today Aish.com services over 1 million visitors each month, and Coopersmith harbors ambitious designs to bring this "lean and efficient" media staple to the next level. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. ABOUT THIS EPISODE Few individuals have made the impact on Israeli society - and in particular on healing the divisions between the religious and secular populations - than has Tzili Schneider. Born into a Chassidic family in the ultra-Orthodox enclave of Mea She'arim, Tzili nevertheless grew up amidst incredible warmth and inclusiveness, in an open home that often found guests sleeping in her own bed! In time, Tzili established an organization that has paired thousands of people to study together, and most notably has developed programs within the elite pre-military academies with outstanding results. She continues to dream, hoping to establish mixed community centers to promote dialogue and connection, and to expand her vision across the world. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. From there, he blossomed into one of the generation's most acclaimed cosmologists, crafting complex experiments at the South Pole and nearly solving one of the most contested questions in the origin-of-the-universe debate. An Alter Boy in his youth, then affirmed atheist for many years, Keating later became a committed Jew with great respect for religion generally. His book, Losing the Nobel Prize, chronicles his story and transformation, while also sharing his critique of what the Prize has become and what it's doing to science and to young scientists. Losing the Nobel Prize will be available beginning in April 2018 at the books home site - http://amzn.to/2sa5UpA - as well as at Amazon.com or wherever fine books are sold. ---------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. 11 Oct 2021 | Episode 163 - The Aish International CEO: A Conversation with R' Steven Burg | 00:52:43
“A CEO trapped in a Rabbi’s body.” In this frank, honest conversation, Aish HaTorah CEO Steven Burg shares the story of his career. Together, we explore his roots and track the realization of his potential while working for major global Jewish organizations. As the son of a Brooklyn Rabbi, he credits his father for firmly establishing in him a deep love and respect for Jewish life from a young age. He studied in Israel during the First Gulf War, and later attended Yeshiva University. “...then someone else goes, oh yeah, it’s latte!” R’ Burg then found a way to satisfy his desire for meaning and purpose by volunteering at the National Council of Synagogue Youth (NCSY). Nine years later, he was made a Regional Director for NCSY, eventually becoming its National Director and the Executive Director of the Orthodox Union (OU). He shares heartwarming vignettes from his days there. His next stop was at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a completely new challenge with very different objectives. “There was just this sense of responsibility for the Jewish people that really spoke to me. And they lived it. They didn't just talk about it. They lived it. That was number one. And number two was the relationship with The Almighty.” R’ Burg discloses what drew him to Aish HaTorah: the values, the goals, and the mission that spoke to him enough to shift his niche. As Chief Executive Officer of Aish HaTorah International he has navigated through exceedingly complicated management and financial challenges. Yet he is committed to building the organization as a worldwide leader in Jewish education, helping steward it on a mission to reach 3 million unaffiliated Jews via social media by 2030. “God gave us the tool. He gave us Jewish wisdom to connect to him. So, we just have to make it available to folks out there. Albeit in the old days, discovery was three days and now I've got 15 seconds on a TikTok. So that's changed a little bit in terms of attention span, but we've got to be where the people are.” Connect with Rabbi Steven Burg: Linked In - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rabbi-steven-burg-0b59a83 Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/stevenjburg/ Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/RabbiSteveBurg Connect with the host: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jewsyoushouldknow Twitter: https://twitter.com/JewsUShouldKnow Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jewsyoushouldknow Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ari-koretzky-18b12217/

28 Jan 2019 | Episode 065 - The Constructor of Social Good: A Conversation with Shea Rubenstein | 00:44:20
ABOUT THIS EPISODE It might be easier to list the things Shea Rubenstein isn't than those he is. A construction professional and real estate developer, Shea is also a veritable chessed (kindness) machine. Under the aegis of his JCC of Marine Park (Brooklyn), he has launched an astonishing number and array of social services, including job training and placement, mentorship, food rescue, anti-hunger programs, computer proficiency clinics and much more. He is also a musician - instrumentalist, composer and singer - to boot; his most recent album is a collection of Yiddish songs dedicated to Holocaust survivors, which he distributed free of charge to this cherished but aging population. Shea organizes conferences for business professionals of all stripes, and we sat down in November 2018 at the Hilton Hotel in Staten Island, capping off the day-long TribeWorks event. This gathering was unique in that it coalesced over a dozen Jewish job service organizations, leveraging their joint resources and connections to present exceptional speakers and programming to several hundred eager participants. Shea Rubenstein is a force in business and philanthropy, but at his core is the ultimate mentsch, generous with his time, resources and expertise in supporting many emerging entrepreneurs and others along their respective journeys. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. ABOUT THIS EPISODE Charlie Harary is today one of the most sought-after religious and motivational speakers in the Jewish world. But he wasn't always religiously motivated or inspired himself. It took a special mentor to ignite his passion and propel him to "own" his own spiritual journey. After time at Columbia Law School and a stint in "Big Law," Charlie moved through the worlds of venture capital and ultimately real estate investment. Simultaneously, he began volunteering for the youth group NCSY and developing his reputation as an inspiring speaker. In this conversation, we cover Charlie's professional philosophies - including the "myth of balance," the "power of win-win business deals," and the value of "crowd-sourcing life" - as well as his personal and spiritual aspirations ("growth is about a maturation to material"). We also explore his media productions - including viral videos, a radio show and podcast, an upcoming book and a feature length film about G-d and spirituality. Charlie's interests are diverse and he brings his special passion for each subject to the fore in this enjoyable interview. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. The Hospitality Guru & Jewish Futures Pledge Founder: A Conversation with Mike Leven Mike Leven was immersed in Jewish life throughout his childhood in Boston. He attended shul and Hebrew school, spent his summers at Jewish camp, and played baseball at the YMHA. His parents worked hard, and tzedakah was a vital element of their Jewish identity. Mike's successful hospitality career included the creation of the Holiday Inn Express brand and the reorganization of Days Inn of America, which transformed the company from a regional chain to one of the world's largest hotel corporations. Mike has also established the Jewish Future Pledge (JFP), a national project he hopes will leave a distinct Jewish charitable legacy. The JFP encourages people to leave a percentage of their fortune to organisations and philanthropies that help Jews and Israel survive, as trillions of dollars in wealth are set to pass from one generation to the next over the next twenty-five years. Mike also wants youngsters to sign the Jewish Youth Pledge, which encourages them to support the Jewish community by making friends and participating in Jewish activities. In this episode, Mike discusses his experiences in the hotel sector, how he effectively integrates tzedakah and business, the role philanthropy plays in Mike's life, and what drove him to launch the Jewish Future Pledge. 09 Oct 2017 | Episode 008 - The Hedge Fund Talmud Professor: A Conversation with Ari Bergmann | 00:33:11
ABOUT THIS EPISODE Ari Bergmann may be one of the most unique and iconoclastic interviewees imaginable. In many ways, he is a walking paradox: a prolific hedge fund principal who is also a prolific Torah scholar; a product of classical yeshiva institutions who embraces - and now teaches, at the Ivy Leagues no less! - academic Talmud study; a rationalist with deep appreciation for Judaism's esoteric wisdom. Yet, to hear him tell it, there is no contradiction at all. Beyond mere "harmony" or "synthesis," Ari Bergmann insists on "consilience" - a symbiotic coupling of putative opposites that results in an "emergent experience." Certainly, his own life models this ideal, and he is bullish on others' abilities to reach this transcendent state in their own as well. In this episode, Ari takes us through his childhood in Sao Palo, Brazil, his early education in the great Torah centers of America and Israel, his professional achievements on Wall Street, and ultimately his academic pursuits at Columbia University and beyond. Hedge Fund principal, rare Judaica collector, esoteric and exoteric Torah scholar, and now Ivy League professor...Ari has a story worth hearing and a message worth absorbing for every listener. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world.
