Rabbi Yehoshua Fass is Co-Founder of Nefesh B’Nefesh, an organization that has revolutionized the Aliyah process for over 65,000 Western Olim, assisting them in moving to Israel by acting to remove financial, logistical, and professional obstacles.  After receiving his rabbinic ordination, as well as degrees in biology and education, Rabbi Fass felt compelled to put his faith into action after learning of the murder of a relative in a terrorist bombing in 2001.

Nefesh B’Nefesh has contributed greatly to the fabric of Israeli society since its founding in 2002, with Jews of all denominations, ages, and backgrounds seeking their assistance in the Aliyah process.  With a 90%+ retention rate, Rabbi Fass has been highly effective in helping Western Olim through the often arduous Aliyah process, and is a “Jew You Should Know”.

Sivan Rahav-Meir is a true anomaly in Israeli society: a popular TV news anchor, commentator and columnist, but also a fully and publicly observant Jewish woman. Growing up in the upscale Tel Aviv suburb of Herzaliya, Sivan had a penchant for interviewing others from the age of six, beginning with her classmates and teachers, and eventually branching out to broader society.

She became a "child star," appearing on youth programs, interviewing prime ministers and celebrities, and already worked professionally in the field while still a teenager. Around that time, she also discovered a passion for her Jewish roots, which until then had remain unexplored.

As she matured in both her faith and her career, Sivan eventually came to see her calling in the changing world of "new media" as  synthesizing these twin passions, and she began teaching and speaking on these topics. Quickly, her daily Torah posts - since compiled in to a book named #Parsha - went viral, and her weekly Jerusalem Parsha (Torah Portion) class attracted over 700 live participants, with many more followers online.

Along the way, Sivan has pioneered a new model of public discourse about Judaism, and "mainstreamed" many topics previously not addressed in some corners of Israeli society. While maintaining her role as a popular news reporter and writer, today Sivan speaks around the country and around the world, sharing an infectious message of unity and optimism, anchored to a timeless Jewish harbor.

Growing up as a teenager in Toronto, Nechemia Coopersmith was always a truth-seeker. So when his older brother Eric went off to study in Israel, he naturally determined to learn more, and ultimately discovered a similar path, counter-cultural for its time but authentic in its fidelity to ancient roots.

Few individuals have made the impact on Israeli society - and in particular on healing the divisions between the religious and secular populations - than has Tzili Schneider. Born into a Chassidic family in the ultra-Orthodox enclave of Mea She'arim, Tzili nevertheless grew up amidst incredible warmth and inclusiveness, in an open home that often found guests sleeping in her own bed!

Rabbi Warren Goldstein was both the youngest and first native-born ever elected as Chief Rabbi of South Africa. In the thirteen years since assuming that post, he has engaged at every level of South African Jewish and civic society. His book, Losing the Nobel Prize, chronicles his story and transformation, while also sharing his critique of what the Prize has become and what it's doing to science and to young scientists.

“A CEO trapped in a Rabbi’s body.”

In this frank, honest conversation, Aish HaTorah CEO Steven Burg shares the story of his career. Together, we explore his roots and track the realization of his potential while working for major global Jewish organizations.

As the son of a Brooklyn Rabbi, he credits his father for firmly establishing in him a deep love and respect for Jewish life from a young age. He studied in Israel during the First Gulf War, and later attended Yeshiva University.

“...then someone else goes, oh yeah, it’s latte!”

R’ Burg then found a way to satisfy his desire for meaning and purpose by volunteering at the National Council of Synagogue Youth (NCSY). Nine years later, he was made a Regional Director for NCSY, eventually becoming its National Director and the Executive Director of the Orthodox Union (OU). He shares heartwarming vignettes from his days there.

His next stop was at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a completely new challenge with very different objectives.

“There was just this sense of responsibility for the Jewish people that really spoke to me. And they lived it. They didn't just talk about it. They lived it. That was number one. And number two was the relationship with The Almighty.”

R’ Burg discloses what drew him to Aish HaTorah: the values, the goals, and the mission that spoke to him enough to shift his niche. As Chief Executive Officer of Aish HaTorah International he has navigated through exceedingly complicated management and financial challenges. Yet he is committed to building the organization as a worldwide leader in Jewish education, helping steward it on a mission to reach 3 million unaffiliated Jews via social media by 2030.

“God gave us the tool. He gave us Jewish wisdom to connect to him. So, we just have to make it available to folks out there. Albeit in the old days, discovery was three days and now I've got 15 seconds on a TikTok. So that's changed a little bit in terms of attention span, but we've got to be where the people are.”

It might be easier to list the things Shea Rubenstein isn't than those he is. A construction professional and real estate developer, Shea is also a veritable chessed (kindness) machine. Under the aegis of his JCC of Marine Park (Brooklyn), he has launched an astonishing number and array of social services, including job training and placement, mentorship, food rescue, anti-hunger programs, computer proficiency clinics and much more. He is also a musician - instrumentalist, composer and singer - to boot; his most recent album is a collection of Yiddish songs dedicated to Holocaust survivors, which he distributed free of charge to this cherished but aging population.

Shea organizes conferences for business professionals of all stripes, and we sat down in November 2018 at the Hilton Hotel in Staten Island, capping off the day-long TribeWorks event. This gathering was unique in that it coalesced over a dozen Jewish job service organizations, leveraging their joint resources and connections to present exceptional speakers and programming to several hundred eager participants.

Shea Rubenstein is a force in business and philanthropy, but at his core is the ultimate mentsch, generous with his time, resources and expertise in supporting many emerging entrepreneurs and others along their respective journeys.

The Hospitality Guru & Jewish Futures Pledge Founder: A Conversation with Mike Leven

Mike Leven was immersed in Jewish life throughout his childhood in Boston. He attended shul and Hebrew school, spent his summers at Jewish camp, and played baseball at the YMHA. His parents worked hard, and tzedakah was a vital element of their Jewish identity.

Mike's successful hospitality career included the creation of the Holiday Inn Express brand and the reorganization of Days Inn of America, which transformed the company from a regional chain to one of the world's largest hotel corporations.

Mike has also established the Jewish Future Pledge (JFP), a national project he hopes will leave a distinct Jewish charitable legacy. The JFP encourages people to leave a percentage of their fortune to organisations and philanthropies that help Jews and Israel survive, as trillions of dollars in wealth are set to pass from one generation to the next over the next twenty-five years. Mike also wants youngsters to sign the Jewish Youth Pledge, which encourages them to support the Jewish community by making friends and participating in Jewish activities.

In this episode, Mike discusses his experiences in the hotel sector, how he effectively integrates tzedakah and business, the role philanthropy plays in Mike's life, and what drove him to launch the Jewish Future Pledge.

Daniel Shapiro is a University of Chicago Law School graduate. He has been a trial lawyer for many years and is a lifetime Chicagoan. He spends his free time reading and socializing with his grown children. His debut book, The Thin Ledge i,s a raw and real telling of coping with his wife’s severe brain trauma. He's currently working on his second book, a novel about an aging lawyer, late-career ambition, and ethnicity in a changing, awakened society.

In the The Thin Ledge, Daniel recounts the realities of living through his wife's mental and physical decline as a result of a dreadful illness in this very honest book. When Daniel’s wife, Susan, suffered a brain bleed and was told her prognosis was uncertain, he was a successful attorney in his early forties. The couple, stunned and with three small children, made the best of the next few years before a major second hemorrhage changed everything. Susan's physical abilities to speak, see, and walk were severely hampered. Mentally, she descended into sadness and underwent a significant personality shift.

​In this episode, Daniel shares his experiences as a caregiver to his wife and how he was able to cope with the difficult diagnosis. He discusses how he looked to Judaism for help and why he chose his faith to find answers among the confusion and fear. He also talks about how his life transformed and the love, commitment, loss and resilience he faced throughout this profound period of his life.

Avram Miller - The Intel Guru

Avram Miller is best recognized for co-founding Intel Capital, the computer industry's most successful corporate investment organization. While at Intel, he was Vice President of Corporate Development. Miller was a major influence behind the creation of residential broadband, which was a crucial component in the development of today's internet. Miller had a good career in medical science before moving into high tech.

Miller has served on a variety of company boards in both high tech and health care since leaving Intel in 1999. He has advised and invested in a number of early-stage businesses. He currently resides in Tel Aviv and travels widely across the globe.

Avram Miller discusses how intuition, imagination, humor, and risk-taking enabled him to become one of Silicon Valley's pioneers and leading venture investors in his new book, The Flight of a Wild Duck: An Improbable Journey Through Life and Technology. He recounts his journey from childhood illness and an inability to function in the educational system to becoming a top executive at one of the world's leading technological firms.
