Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic, a monthly interviews podcast where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and their personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctor: Stephen Magnusson Listen to Steve Magnusson's answers to the questions below: Why do you transcribe? 03:47 What do you expect to learn from a transcription? 17:41 How do you choose the solos to transcribe? 24:21 What is your transcribing methodology? 33:08 Do you use any software? 45:45 Which transcription of yours is your favourite? 01:09:05 Artists mentioned in this episode: Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Dmitri Sostakovic, Charlie Parker, Charles Lloyd, Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Brad Mehldau, Sonny Rollins a.o.
Stephen Magnusson is considered one of Australia’s most accomplished, versatile and distinct musicians with incredible technique and an astoundingly beautiful tone. His hectic schedule shows that he is a delight to work with and someone that has ‘something to say’ in the world of improvised music. He was given his first ukulele at 3, his first guitar at 6 and began performing at 10 on an electric guitar that he loaned from his schoolteacher. At 13, he started to study under the guidance of Gordon Pendleton at the Box Hill Tafe and discovered the world of improvised music. In 1986, he studied at the esteemed Victorian College of the Arts under the supervision of some of Australia’s finest musicians – Tony Gould, Bob Sedergreen and Mike Doyle. Here he expanded his practice regime and playing. He joined various bands playing numerous styles and developed an understanding of different methods. But, his main focus remained, to develop and hone the craft of mastering the guitar. He travelled to Europe and lived there and after being appointed on the staff at The Academy of Contemporary Music (Zurich) in 1997, Stephen met his long time collaborator – Sergio Beresovsky. They began to perform regularly with Swedish bassist – Bjorn Meyer and in the July of the same year, Australian saxophonist Julien Wilson travelled to meet and play with the trio. After the first week of playing, they formed SNAG and produced a self-titled album (released in Australia ‘Hey Guess What’). After 3 years of living in Zurich, Stephen returned to Melbourne in August 2000. He entered the National Jazz Award at Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival, where he tied for first place amongst much controversy. At this festival, he performed with his trio featuring Sergio and Eugene Ball. This recorded result is captured on the CD ‘Healing Songs’. He has worked with many artists including Charlie Haden, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ricki Lee Jones, Sinead O’Connor, John Cale, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Paul Grabowsky, Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, Lisa Young, Christine Sullivan, Michelle Nicole, Martin Breeze, The Assumptions Trio, Megan Washington, Paul Kelly, Jim Black, Mike Nock, Barney McAll, Enrico Rava, Arthur Blythe and many others. As a part of the Katie Noonan trio Elixir, the ensemble won the ARIA for Best Jazz Album in 2011. In 2013, Stephen was awarded the Melbourne Prize for Outstanding Musician, and the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album with his quartet MAGNET (with Carl Pannuzzo, Eugene Ball and Sergio Beresovsky). Stephen is currently concentrating on writing for his duo Boundaries with Frank DiSario, and trio MAG featuring DiSario and Dave Beck. He will also be completing the second release from MAGNET, SOM. 15 Jan 2022 | Episode 7.1 - Remember - Hank Mobley’s solo | 00:50:48
Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic LIVE, a variation of the podcast of the monthly interview where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and their personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast Live, I am analysing my transcription of the song Remember, as played by Hank Mobley on the album Soul Station. I am talking through the entire solo and explaining some of the strategies and ideas employed by Hank Mobley. I also explain strategies on how to practise your transcription, what to spend time on and how deep you should go with details. Hank Mobley employes a number of great tools to master his phrasings, such as enclosures, motivic development, and repetition of ideas. Especially in the first four bars of the chorus, he is always using similar ideas within the chromatic descent of the chords. Hank Mobley is telling us: 'repetirion is a good thing!'.

31 Oct 2022 | Ep. 16 - Sharp Eleven Music - Jorre Reynders & Timothy Pedone | 01:15:43
Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic, a monthly interviews podcast where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and their personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctors: Jorre Reynders and Timothy Pedone from Sharp Eleven Music. Listen to Barney's answers to the questions below: Why do you transcribe? 03:11 What do you expect to learn from a transcription? 11:34 How do you choose solos? 25:43 What is your transcribing methodology? 29:30 Do you write it down? 38:28 How do you practise the solos? 53:41 How do you incorporate transcriptions into your playing? 01:00:13 Who was the most difficult one to transcribe? 01:05:38 What is your favourite solo that you transcribed? 01:12:09 Jorre Reynders After finishing his Master studies in Jazz saxophone at the Conservatory of Maastricht, Jorre decided to publish his transcriptions to the rest of the world through Youtube, naming it after how he named all his musical projects: "Sharp Eleven Music". Driven since teenage years by the awesomeness of a saxophone sound and soloing in particular, it has lead to an endless stream of motivation to dig deeper into everything saxophonist (and by extension other instruments) have to offer, uncovering it to the world simultanously. Publishing consistently a transcription ever two weeks since 2016 plus practicing and analyzing it has lead to a much deeper unstanding of everything saxophone, improvisation and music in general. This is now applied in the teaching courses and his own musical explorations. Jorre is as a saxophonist active in the international acclaimed latin band Mambisimo Big Band, The Jack Million Big Band, his own Fusion project consisting of original material named the Sharp Eleven Electric Band with an album "Donkey Dance" released in 2020, several independ productions under Sharp Eleven Music like the Charlie Parker 1942 version of "Cherokee" for 5-part sax soli amongst others, and active as a working musician in Belgium and the rest of Europe. He also founded an indoor soccer (Futsal) club called FC Sharp Eleven, keeping fysically poor musicians off the streets. They lose all their games. Timothy Pedone Just like Jorre, Timothy finished his Master studies in jazz guitar at the Conservatory of Maastricht. After that he went back to his first love, composition and developed a solo project, called Introvert. Not much time went by before he founded a music production company together with Jorre in 2016, called Edge Effect. Of course, studying guitar never stopped and transcribing became an increasingly bigger part of that. Fast forward to today and we have over 150 guitar transcriptions and lots of insights gained. Additionally, Timothy is currently studying conducting at the conservatory of Leuven, he's assisting composers with orchestrations and engraving and every two weeks or so he goes and loses a game of indoor soccer. 01 Jun 2023 | Ep 23 - Stefano Bollani | 01:02:30
Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic, a monthly interviews podcast where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast, Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctor: STEFANO BOLLANI. Stefano is not only one of my best friends, he was also my best man at my wedding and my deskmate at high school. We have gone through uncountable adventures, with some highlights like the recording of the album Carioca in Brazil (followed by several tours) and his jazz quintet I Visionari. Leave a comment if you like. Listen to Stefano''s answers to the questions below: 00:00 Introduction 02:50 Why do you transcribe? 27:34 How do you choose the solos you transcribe? 30:30 What is your methodology? 40:53 Do you write it down? 45:25 How do you practice your transcriptions? 46:00 How do you incorporate ideas into your solos? 48:26 Who was the most difficult player you transcribed? 57:47 Which transcription you've done is your favourite? Stefano Bollani (born 5 December 1972) is an Italian composer, pianist, and singer, also active as a writer and television presenter. Stefano has worked with such musicians as Gato Barbieri, Chick Corea, Bill Frisell, Sol Gabetta, Richard Galliano, Egberto Gismonti, Lee Konitz, Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, Caetano Veloso, Phil Woods, Hector Zazou and has recorded more than 15 albums with trumpeter Enrico Rava. Bollani has performed with several symphonic orchestras (Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, among others) and with directors such as Riccardo Chailly, Daniel Harding, Kristjan Järvi, Zubin Mehta, Gianandrea Noseda and Antonio Pappano. He has also played with Italian pop-rock artists and has participated in and hosted TV and radio shows. Currently, he has published 49 albums alone (31 studio). Stefano, as usual, approaches transcription from a different angle and perspective. Knowing him for more than 40 years, I never had a chance to have a long, deep conversation on jazz transcriptions. I learned unexpected things and understood (finally) a few things that were always a mystery to me. Click on the link and listen to the beautiful answer that Stefano gave me.
