16 Feb 2017 | Episode 21. Java 9 is coming! And we're leaving things behind (also, does US immigration affect Devs, and how?) | 01:20:21
Ah, well, it has been promised, and it WILL be delivered. Java 9 is feature complete! And we start taking a look at what is (http/2 finally?), and more importantly, what was cut-off from the release. We also did dive into what does it means when developers can't migrate to the US. Is it good for our industry? Or is it meh, as people just telecommute? And as long as we're talking policy we touched on Net Neutrality since it might be an issue this year. Do we have to say goodbye to those millions and millions of undeterred bit streams? We're going to be doing a live performance at DevNexus!. If you happen to go in Feb, come and join us there!

01 Feb 2021 | OffHeap 58. New Year, new rules, new bans! | 01:28:10
Many things are happening this year. With the official end of the Adobe Flash era, we take a dive on the current landscape including Netbeans, Microprofile 4.0, the alledged Russia Cyber attack of Jetbrains Software, and then into the huge sway that social media platforms have. We dive deeply into how the bans of twitter accounts, hosting providers, and social media tends to shape society, and realize how huge technology is for managing these. We see how it relates to the US's concept of Freedom of speech (and what it / what isn't freedom of speech). An very charged episode with a lot of opinions on technology and censorship. Definitively entertaining!

11 Jun 2019 | Episode 45. Apache Roadshow in da HOUSE! Oracle says "NO!" to Javax, and A look at Diversity and Inclusion within Apache and Beyond | 00:49:40
Oh snap! so The Apache Roadshow just happened, and we armed our own Bob with all our podcasting equipment, unload him at the roadshow, gave him a couple of beers, and turned the mics on! Recorded live from the bar we go into the interesting news (Java 13 is EA now), to the unfathomable (Jakara EE can't update, change, or enhance the "javax" space), to a great discussion with Gris Cuevas on D&I. In all, the collective Jakarta EE community jaws dropped once we heard that Oracle would not permit the evolution of the Javax package space. What does it mean for the community? What are the steps to evolve? Should we band-aid it, or just rip it off and move to the new space? Oh boy, and if you don't think that this will affect you since you don't use Java EE, let us mention...JAX-B, or JAX-RS.... or Java EE Security, or JSP.. or websockets... all of these are rolled into Java EE. So take a listen as we navigate this new and perilous world of Jakarta EE, while we also explore, what Apache, Google and others are doing to better our industry's D & I. In all, an episode to not miss! We thank DataDogHQ for sponsoring this podcast episode We also thank OverOps for sponsoring this podcast episode

15 May 2017 | Episode 24. Nothing like Sweet Home Chicago. A GoTo Conference episode with Georges Saab, Ed Burns, James Weaver and Dean Wampler | 01:41:51
You read that right! We were invited to GoTo Chicago to record Java OffHeap live! And we went into it with gusto, first talking with Georges Saab (@gsaab) and Ed Burns (@edburns) on the Future of Java, and then diving in with James Weaver (@javaFXpert) and Dean Wampler (@deanwampler) 2on the current Java News, including microservices and javascript. A big episode, but worth listening to!

21 Jan 2020 | Episode 49. End of Year Review... Oh, my, it has been an interesting year. | 01:23:22
Ah, we got together with our usual suspects, and while our local Curmudgeon was enjoying his Old-fashioned, I was enjoying Cold Medicine. Even so, we went through the biggest events that happened this year, including the Oracle v Google debacle, The new copy-and-kill strategies from cloud providers, the proliferation of Java implementations, the re-emergence of Eclipse Foundation as a home for standards, and of course, the Java EE (reincarnated as Jakarta EE) saga. It has been a great year, and we couldn't have made it with our listeners. Thanks for listening to our podcasts. We have expanded our OffHeap family, so don't forget to check all of our podcasts. 04 Apr 2016 | Episode 12. It's our Bday! with tons of news on Lagoms And bending Lights, and Big Blue, a new M$, and Big Red! | 01:19:19
There has been a re-christening! Typesafe is no more, and now is Lightbend! And it comes with a new Microservice Framework Lagom. Also in other news, IBM both announces layoffs, and also comes back and sues groupon for infringing on its patents. What could it all mean? And Microsoft building Sql Server on Linux? Xamarin acquired by Microsoft? This is a very different Microsoft now! What gives? Oracle lost another evangelist. Reza Rahman, the Java Evangelist for Glassfish and Java EE left! Is Oracle cutting back on their Java EE Investment? Or even in their Java investment? Don't forget to tell your friends and co-workers about our podcast. What are the end-of-year news for Java? What was on-target, and what fell through the cracks? Take a listen where we walk down memory lane and see what were the big hits (and misses) of Java in 2015. Also, let's talk about Computer Science and Education. What road do you take to get there? CS Degree? Certifications? Bootcamps? Nothing? Is it important? 29 Apr 2019 | Episode 44. A new Soap Opera! Starring Elastic and Amazon (A story of ElasticSearch Open Distro) | 01:06:55
Oh my, we take a break for a month, and things happen! We start with the news of the day (JDK 12 is General Availability, so go and download it today!). F5 buys NginX which brings more consolidation in the web appliance/software space, and there is a new Continuous Delivery Foundation! (What does it means for all of us devopsy folks) Then we dive into some interesting developments in ElasticSearch! You might have been using it, and even contributed to it, but may have not realized that some parts are actually commercial in nature. Amazon is releasing a purely "Free as in Free beer" ElasticSearch Open Distro where there's no confusion on what's commercial, since there's nothing commercial in it. It makes it harder for Elastic to make a buck, but maybe there might be a different monetization model for them? All in all, an exciting episode on how the open source community and for-profit companies are trying to find when the line is being crossed. 01 Feb 2016 | Oh Snap! Google is gonna be using OpenJDK in Android! | 01:01:40
Holy smokes Batman! Google is going to be using OpenJDK for its Android OS? How did that happen? and what does that mean for Java. Is Google simply avoiding further headache in the future from its Oracle lawsuit? Or is this a smart play where Google wins with Android where they get to standarized (goodbye Samsung customization?). 20 Dec 2017 | Episode 29. On SpringOne, EE4J, and Oh, gosh, we just lost Net Neutrality! | 01:15:49
So we got our crew reporting on SpringOne and what has happened over there (IBM is working "very" closely with Pivotal!). Then we discuss a little of EE4J (the notes from Mike Milinkovich), to then dive into something affecting everyone that lives (or works with) the US. Yes, we are talking deep about Net Neutrality and how can it change the dynamics on how we work and what we do! So take a listen, an important episode for sure

So we are technologist, and we create technology, and we live on it... technology on its own is neither good or evil...but what happens when a corporation dives into that gray are of how technology is used? We discuss what it means to have such a big influence in how people get their news, interact with each other, and at what point you can't just say "I don't want to interfere" A very pundit-adept topic, we discuss what could possibly be done to help the issue of misinformation while also balancing the need to be heard. http://www.javaoffheap.com/datadog DO follow us on twitter @offheap October 2021 Reactive Summit - November 2-3 Jakarta One - December 7 Jconf.dev - December 8 - 10 jChampions - January 2022 DevNexus - April 2022 News: JDK 18 Shaping Up (JEP 408) Jakarta EE 10 Release Update Eclipse Ide 2021-09 Supports JDK 17 Raspberry Pi price increase Future of Play Framework Facebook Change to Metaverse

Allright, so in the middle of summer, and what better way to fight the summer heat than to have a cold one and talk about tech, right? We got together again and discuss the cool things that are happening (Java 22, Kotlin 2.0), and then we take a detour on looking at what's happening in the open source space (RedHat prunes Middleware, OCI Stops Funding Grails), and we try to figure out where would it end. 31 Aug 2021 | OffHeap 62. On Stallman, Apple and Basecamp | 01:18:43
Right, there were a good tricle of tech news like the release of Scala 3, and that now Microsoft is part of the OpenJDK (hm… we wonder if the JClarity acquision had anything to do w/that ;). But the Internet was rocked by a big tidal wave of D&I avoidance, Social pressure (but some would say Cancel Culture?) and selective historical facts. In that we dive to explore what has dominated the tech twitter feeds, facebook post, and essentially comment on the unbelievebable nuclear explosion (implosion in the case of Basecamp) that just happened. With the advent of Basecamp’s new policy (and the pyramid of hate), and the follow-up en-masse resignations, then Apple’s offer, twice rescinded to Antonio Garcia Martinez, to finally the Electronic Frontier Foundation inclusion of Dr. Stallman back on the board (on which, his past is either forgiven, or forgotten) this episode dives into how it got to here, and we piece together how these bungled-up situation blew up in the twittersphere Come take a listen and tour with us the reality of being in tech today! Hopefully you have had some time to R&R, but if you were in tech around Dec 2020, you heard that there was this massive security incident around Log4j. It affected almost everyone, from large to small companies, and if you work in Java, chances are that you might've to work on it too (and if you haven't, it's a good idea to double-check your code) It has a severity of "10", which is rare, and what makes it hard to ignore. 04 Jul 2016 | Episode 15. Change is in the air? Is Oracle really letting Java EE die? The EE Guardians' Petition and More | 01:09:25
"Legacy is coming", is the call of those that are Guarding Java EE. The Java EE Guardians started a Change.org petition (and I Signed it) to get Oracle to re-engage in the Java EE space. Are there alternatives? What is plan B? Can the community take over? Is it even feasible without fragmenting? Is this all happening because of the Cloud? Some of these questions were asked in the public forum of the Java Community Process. So many questions, and very little answers from Oracle. Take a listen as we explore the different on-the-record responses, what are the possible outcomes and how the community can get involved. 30 Oct 2019 | Episode 48. On Jakarta EE 9 Band-aids, OracleCodeOne Debrief, Unionizing Tech, IBM vs Microsoft and Oracle JDBC Drivers! | 01:08:57
Oh Goody, this is the first episode after coming back from both OracleCodeOne and ApacheCon... and things are happening! First off we start that Oracle JDBC Drivers are FINALLY in Maven Central (hey, missed the mark for a couple of years). We then dive into Jakarta EE 9 updates, including Oracle's position on the "Big Bang" approach to the namespace changes (Hint, you WILL be affected by this, even when you think you aren't). We then look at Java SE 13 (Woohoo!), and that we can finally have Text Blocks (yeah, go crazy with that Json String), and look at Java SE 14 Early builds (including Helpful NullPointerExceptions). Spring is in the news as their Conference SpringOne went underway, and we talk about OracleCodeOne and ApacheCon (good, bad, bust?) Lastly we cover Unionizing Tech Workers and what could it mean to our industry, and we end up by setting the record straight on an article that seems to imply IBM is divesting in Java (This is a far cry from the truth). In all, a fun and great episode to listen while having a beer. We thank DataDogHQ for sponsoring this podcast episode

03 Nov 2015 | Episode 8. Hello from JavaOne San Francisco, celebrating 20 years of Java! | 00:46:06
So we made it to the promised land! The biggest Java Conference in the U.S. (we snuck in) and dedicated our podcast to Java's 20th birthday, and also render tribute to the iconic Java Posse. Back in 2010 they made a series of predictions on what the Year 2015 would bring. Apparently they weren't that off! 22 Aug 2016 | Episode 16. CMS removed? Oracle Rebooting Java EE? Is Lagom finally 1.0? | 01:15:52
In this episode we talk about the changing landscape of Java. Oracle apparently is rebooting JavaEE! But what does that mean? especially with Microprofile.io efforts? Also, Oracle is planning to "remove" CMS on a future version of Java. Is G1 really ready for prime-time? How is it possible for one organization to "remove" code? And Lagom finally made it to 1.0, even though we're not sure if it really make any difference (it seems more documentation than anything else). Come take a listen as your favorite curmudgeons talk about Java!

06 Oct 2021 | OffHeap 66. Faster LTS releases? And A new Java license you say? How...peculiar | 01:10:36
So aside from being all giddy about Java 17 LTS release, we take now a deep dive on the changes that Oracle announced on their release schedule and Licensing. WANL (We are not Lawyers) but that didn't stop us from discussing what could it mean, and where would it go! Faster LTS, we are onboard. It's fun to be able to jump from LTS to LTS, but what does that mean for older releases and maintainability (as Oracle longstanding policy is to sunset the "oldest" of LTS when a new one comes out). We see the interesting dynamics on this with the new "Oracle No Fee Terms and Conditions", and what does that mean for Big Red's plan for our favorite programming language. In all, an interesting episode to pay attention to (and to know what's important). Like all Licenses, do talk to a real lawyer before adopting a new license (we really are just code monkeys that managed to wrestle a microphone). Or go with another Java open source binary provider on the standard licenses (Like Adoptium!)

(Oh well) We cover the new virtual conferences coming up for the Year 2023 that are coming up + we dive into the massive tech layoff happening (including of course twitter). We then dive head-first on an ever-relevant question. "If you were to start a new project now, which Java version would you use". Do you stick with 11? Episode 20. It's the End of the Year! Let's recap! and Oh noes, seems some FUD is coming our way from the Register?! So the end of 2016 is upon us! And as such we should take a little time to reflect on what a year we had. Of course, before diving into that we gotta talk about the infamous article by the Register telling us Oracle is coming to charge us for Java (gasp!) by using some misworded (or misleading) headlines. Also, Gartner is telling us that there are no Java EE Application Servers? True/false? We talk about it and let you decide! Episode 42. Move over JCP! There's a new Specs Maintaining Organization in town with Eclipse Foundation Spec Process. Oh goody, this episode is special in many ways! First, I got to travel to Chicago, and meet in-person with our usual suspects. We went to the bar where everything started, and we recorded our 42th episode in-person! (very Douglas Adams). But aside from the reminiscing, we actually got the Executive Director of The Eclipse Foundation to go on the record on what's happening with Eclipse Foundation and Jakarta EE! We went into what does it mean to have the Eclipse Foundation Spec Process (and how is that affect the JCP), and dove into maintainers, and the future of Jakarta EE (Glassfish is released!). All in all, an incredible episode, with "you-heard-it-here-first" content. Go ahead an play. Also, a big shoutout to Dr. Heinz Kabutz who plugged our podcast in his newsletter. 19 Aug 2019 | Episode 46. On Clouds, 10x Developers, JDK Mistery Meats, and Python bytes! | 01:06:07
Ah, "cloud wars" are getting interesting (we claim dibs on the movie title!). With Oracle losing their bid w/the Pentagon, and Microsoft also reaching out and partnering with Oracle, there is tons of interest in what's going on. But that's not all! The twitters was set aflame by the 10x Developer twitter that has been going around (for the record, we think is mostly nonsense), and we dive into a hilarious take on what 10x developers are supposed to be. We also dive into Gil Tene's OpenJDK Mystery meat, and the threat of "just taking the latest Docker image". It's a sobering thought that sometimes even when you see the version of OpenJDK, it might not be the right thing due to the OS packaging, which in turn becomes a Docker reference image. In all a troubling precedent specially when Common Vulnerabilies and Exposures (CVE) are concerned. Lastly, there are predictions that Python is going to overtake Java as the most used language in the TIOBE index. Of course this crowd will not just take that proclamation laying down. So we went into a heated discussion why and how it is (in our humble opinion) a little rushed to say that python is going to overtake Java in mere four years. We also see that Serializable is going to be removed (and hopefully there is an alternative for it), and we also dive into the ethics of Google as it turns down military contracts they are uncomfortable with. We also see Mission Control being open sourced and explore what that means (an opportunity for growth or a death knell for the product?). Lastly we dive into a bit of a news where Oracle will retain the description of the EE specs and not transfer it to the Eclipse Foundation. What does that mean for Jakarta? 04 Apr 2021 | OffHeap 60. JDK 16, Spring Native, Micronaut, Microprofile and GraalVM have new releases! Author tags, And Companies blaming Interns (boo!) | 01:32:13
Hey y'all, well, this episode we dive into tons of fun stuff. There are new toys w/JDK 16, Spring Native and Graal. Essentially, it's a fun time to play with Native and new JDK 16 features (Records are mainstream!). And in a one-two punch, Spring Native release of 0.9, and Graal news of adopting truffle makes the ideal of adopting native images for your Java builds not far-fetched. It might have still some rough edges, but oh my, for some projects, it went from being painful, to a non-issue. So yeah. Millisecond startup times coming up! Micronaut is also out with 2.4.0, which we think is actually healthy! (we worried for a second or two). And Microprofile also has a release, with its LRA (and SAGA! pattern). We really wished SAGA was an acronym In addition some interesting consolidation happening with Crowdstrike buying Humio, and Okta acquiring Auth0. Interesting moves in security and authentication to say the least. We see how deep SolarWinds go with blaming an intern for their security woes. If that's your strategy, you already lost at the security game (shame!) And lastly, oh my, there is an Outlook vulnerability making its rounds. Important enough to hear (and patch!). You don't want weird inetpub/wwwroot files hanging in your outlook server. http://www.javaoffheap.com/datadog DO follow us on twitter @offheap Take the JVM Survey! 15 Nov 2020 | OffHeap 55. JFrog going public, Java 15 is released (and on github), Graeme Rocher is at Oracle! | 01:31:29
So JFrog made it big! (and we congratulate them!) as they are now a publicly traded company! and because GitHub is paying attention, they are now rolling out Container Registries! (This will help a ton for those in the Docker world) Java 15 is out as well, with all the goodies of a short term cadence (Preview of Sealed Classes, Records, Z Garbage Collector and more!) In addition, have you ever been curious about the JVM Source Code, well, they are finally in GitHub! So go ahead, explore, download, build and play! Lastly we fumbled a prediction on why there was a Micronaut Foundation... Well, we know now. Graeme Rocher just joined Oracle. (which would make it super interesting to see the life expectancy of Micronaut) We thank DataDogHQ for sponsoring this podcast episode

24 Aug 2017 | Episode 26. On Projects that take 10 years, and let's dive into diversity | 01:25:36
Whew, it has been an intense month for IT in general! We dive in our updates (as we are nearing JavaOne), and check on Java 9, Spring 5 and Java EE. After that we dive into IBM's delayed project (and it's owning of 78 million back to the state). We would be remiss if we didn't talk about the hot topic which is of diversity and tolerance in IT (and touch upon the Google's employee manifesto and Charlottesville). In all an episode full of opinion, emotions and interesting sides worth listening to.

15 Sep 2015 | Episode 6. Oracle Security Chief complaining about white hats? Is Reactive Programming the new fad? JUnit asking for money! | 01:29:31
So we go and wake up with the news that Oracles Security Chief didn't like people discovering vulnerabilities on its product (say that again?), then we follow on the new fad covering towns (First it was SAP, then Cloud, to Agile, and now is all about Reactive). Hey! JUnit is asking for $. Want to help them out? We bought them a latte! http://junit.org/junit-lambda.html Going to J1? Join our BOF Session! 07 Oct 2018 | Episode 37. JDK 11 is out! Java Licensing Model is changing! Linus gives an apology | 01:11:42
Extra Extra! If you work in Java you gotta take a break from all other news, and listen to this episode! Java is changing its pricing model, and with that comes a lot of new consequences. You can still get it for free, but you gotta know what you're getting into (Move to OpenJDK!). In another news, Redis is changing is BSD licensing (while usually free, now comes with a ton a caveats for cloud hosts). Lastly, Linus Torvald (the only one who's a bigger curmudgeon than @michaelminella) has decided to apologize to those that had to endure his rants! Our industry is changing, and is moving forward! 06 Oct 2016 | Episode 18. We're back from J1! And Brough Reza Rahman to talk about the Big Reveal on Java EE 8 | 01:12:09
It was a great JavaOne, full of news and mystery. Netbeans becomes part of Apache (or at least it's on its way to be), and Oracle finally revealed what their big plan is for Java EE 8 (and asking about 9)! Do we hang up the "Mission Accomplished" banner? Did the Guardians did it? Come join us as we talk with Reza on what this new state of affairs mean for Java EE, the JCP, The Guardians, and Microprofile.io (and yes! @mminella has been unblocked!)

06 Sep 2017 | OffHeap's Mark And Sweep Episode 1. Let's hear about the beginning of Java, from its creator James Gosling. | 00:56:45
Our First episode is none other than James Gosling. He is considered the "Father of Java", and he put the Java language on the map (which was named "Oak" at the beginning). Ed interviewed him for his book a little while ago, and incredibly, a lot of the advice and ideas he mentioned still holds very well today. So come and take a listen on this first pilot episode of Mark And Sweep. Also, stay tuned for the second episode of Mark And Sweep when Ed, Bob, Michael, Josh and me (Freddy) comment on Chris Wilson (The Browser Architect for Internet Explorer) interview.

We start our episode by diving into that big China hack that seems to come out of nowhere. We then discuss the promise of RedHat for supporting OpenJDK 8. We then take a detour and check on Jakarta EE (how is it doing on Eclipse). After we dive into the Snyk report (what are people running on the JVM). Lastly, the Chicago Java Users Group is running for a seat at the Java Community Process (JCP) table! Do vote for them as we like them a lot! We thank DataDogHQ for sponsoring this podcast episode

30 Apr 2021 | OffHeap 61. Return of the APIs (Supreme Court Ruling on Oracle v Google) | 01:26:00
Ok, 60 episodes ago, back when were were young and innocent, we started this podcast with coverage on the copyrightability of APIs. There were twist...there were turns! And a ton of nail-biting moments, but, finally it seems that the Supreme Court made a ruling (that APIs are not copyrightable) In this episode we cover the timeline, the ruling, and the possible effects it means for all of us developers, starting on the original days of Sun, and then going all the way to April 5th. We are not lawyers but pundits, and as such, we engage in punditry as we dissect what the Supreme Court ruling said (is it narrow? overarching? did they get the analogy right?) Would this turn out to be a George-Lucas moment where there will be more litigation? Episode VII, VIII or IX? or a Jar-Jar Binks moment? We don't know, but we sure be covering them if they happen in our watch! http://www.javaoffheap.com/datadog DO follow us on twitter @offheap Jakarta EE 9.1 - May GlassFish 6.1.0 - Aim for JDK 16: (?) 16 Sep 2016 | Episode 17. Docker-Split? What's the big Reveal at J1? EE 8 finally on track? JDK 9 late? | 01:01:50
So we start with interesting news. Docker (The darling of the Dev and Ops world) is going through a split personality disorder! What does it mean to fork docker and why do people want to fork it? Also, we finally hear that Oracle has been planning deep on Java EE 8, just not sharing too much info on it. If so, then why are we not going through the JCP to discuss this things!? JEP vs JSRs and the claim that maybe OpenJDK should be outside of the JCP for faster evolution? is it worth it?
| |||
15 Apr 2016 | Episode 13. The Good (Java Community Process w/Heather VanCura), The Bad (Corporations?), and the Ugly (Conferences and Controversial Speakers) | 01:18:59
Do you know that Java can evolve right? Do you ever wonder how that happens behind the scenes? Well, we had a great opportunity to talk to the person that coordinates all that magic from the underside, and discuss, albeit briefly what we feel is great and not-so-great within the JCP. We also get to hear first-hand how changes are happening. Who really controls a change in Java (JSR)? how is leadership transition handled?, and what can we do about it. All questions raised by the most vested host we have (Michael), so take a listen! Also, what do we do with conferences that have great technical content, but controversial speakers? Is it right to attend? or is it one of those "Knowledge is neither good or bad"? LambdaConf lost support from its sponsors for allowing a very controversial speaker purely on technical merit, whereas StrangeLoop decided to go the safe route and ban him from the conference. 31 May 2016 | Episode 14. of Googlacle, Superheroes (and EE Guardians), Oracle Stewardship, and Larry Elison's comfy chair | 01:33:26
Oh goodness! There is so much news going on now! Google and Oracle are on round 4 of their lawsuit, and while these giants battle it in Court, it seems that Oracle is stopping investing in Java Development! What does this mean for Java? Is it the end of rapid release lifecycles? Is EE losing too much steam? And just like in the movies, when everything seems dire, a new hero (sort-of) forms. The Java EE Guardians splash the scene! for Truth...Justice...and The Ameri...oh wait, no, that's Superman. The Guardians are all about convincing Oracle that leaving EE is a bad idea. Would they succeed? Let's hear what the opinion in the room is about these group of spirited developed banded with a purpose. Are we now becoming more proactive in upgrading? (or do we still upgrade only when we need to?). 02 Mar 2020 | OffHeap 50. A Milestone! Recorded live at DevNexus, and talked about Google, APIs, and Continuing Education for Java Devs | 00:56:13
Getting everyone on a stage and geeking out with an audience makes for an amazing episode. We had a special guest Jeanne Boyarsky and discussed Hibernate + Graal, Google involvement in Open Source, and Oracle claiming everyone wants copywrited APIs (spoiler alert, we don't). We also played a fun game of "What's that Acronym". We then dive into a big discussion on Continuing Education for us Java Developers, including Java Certificates, Bootcamps, and other ways for us to either get into or update our info in the field. Does Certification make sense? Should you try a BootCamp? Come and take a listen as we explore the interesting and winding road of self-actualization. 08 Jun 2015 | Episode 3. Of Obama, Copyrights, about Typesafe Names, the JCP and Benevolent Dictators, and some Birthday Beer! | 01:06:33
So as soon as we clicked the Record button, there were news of the Obama administration asking the Supreme Court to not take the Oracle V Google case. That's news. Like big news. We discussed, and left you a nicely typed doc in the shownotes to forward to your congressional representative. Also, someone (Typesafe) is going to the Secretary-of-state and asking for a Name-Change form, just that they are not sure what to fill in just yet. Then we take a skip into the new things happening in the JCP, talk about what works, what can be improved and we end with sharing the story of a language that just happen to turn 20 this past month! If you use an Internet Service Provider in the US, that means they can sell all the information about you (yikes!). Lastly, there has been a new MicroServices survey out there and we want to take a look and see what's shaking (and who is shaking) the ever-evolving microservices world.

In addition we revisit the big npm-libs-colors debacle on which an open source contributor single-handedly sent the javascript world scrambling as he poisoned-pill his own work (what does it mean to rely on open source dependencies from individual contributors?). Episode 43. JCP: Hold my (white) Wine. The JCP welcomes the competition of Eclipse Foundation on spec creation + A recap on Reactive. Ah, DevNexus 2019! One of the better conferences to attend in the U.S. We ended up running our yearly offheap show in there with special guests Heather VanCura, and Ben Hale! We went through the deep questions on the role of JCP (now that Eclipse Foundation Spec Process is in town), and Heather replied that the JCP is agile, knows what they've been doing for a while, and that is still THE Source for Java Spec creation! Indeed, these are intertesting times! We also dove deeply on the current state of Reactive (and what Pivotal is doing to make it easier for everyone to embrace it). We got to hear about R2DBC, when to go Reactive, and what is a good criteria for adoption (hint: Don't go and rewrite your large app in reactive just because). To top it off, we ended up with a "Who wants to be a millionaire quiz" where we pitted our guests against our (somewhat tricky) quiz questions. All for the privilege of winning an OffHeap Mug!. Of course, we are talking of Micro-services. We go and discuss the perspective from many different points of view (from the performance guy to the independent to the small and large shops) and try to figure out is it fad? or is just something we always knew with a different name. 06 Oct 2015 | Episode 7. What's going on with Oracle and Java? Also, let's talk about kids, modding, STEM and CS! | 01:22:49
Big Shakeup this month. Oracle had dismissed a number of Java evangelist positions, and there is no official response from Oracle. Also, java.net is no more! What does it mean? Is it the end of Java as we know it? We really don't know but that doesn't stop us from playing out what could happen! Computer Science and Kids! Is it important? Are we doing enough? or too much? Take a listen to get the different perspectives on education and programming! Hey! JUnit is asking for $. Want to help them out? 24 Feb 2016 | Episode 11. The Eagle has Landed, at DEVNEXUS! | 01:35:06
What does David Hasselhoff, aliens, vampires, nuclear weapons and Itunes have in common? They are all part of the OffHeap episode of DevNexus. Join us in this hour (and half) long show where we talk with Markus Eisele(@myfear), and Daniel Hinojosa(@dhinojosa) on far-reaching (and not-so far-reaching) topics like the first time we went, oh-sh!t when deploying to production, or the Tech Economy Outlook. We poll our DevNexus audience about copyrights, apis, type of developers, JCP, and on dead/alive/zombie technologies (GWT, we're watching you). 13 Mar 2017 | Episode 22. Atlanta is Great! DevNexus is Awesome, and we have a great Trivia game with Ted Neward and Chris Richardson | 01:01:35
We made it! After taking a short flight, and re-assembling the crew in Atlanta, we finally made it to DevNexus, the conference run by Atlanta Java User Group. DevNexus is not just a great conference in itself, but it's a great place to run and talk to top tier speakers without breaking the bank. We did our own talking by running into Ted Neward (@tedneward) and Chris Richardson (@crichardson)! We actually manage to sucker-punch them into playing a little game of Trivia with us! At the end, we explore if the Cloud the new Mainframe, and came to some interesting conclusions. An episode like no other, you definitively need to listen to this one!

25 Feb 2022 | OffHeap 71. Hold on now, you mean I can JIT programs in the Cloud? | 01:09:51
Ok, so the fun part about being in the Java Ecosystem is that it's always trying new things, and the interesting new "thing" that seems to be happening is the ability to offload your "JIT" (Just In Time) compilation into the Cloud! We discuss how this changes (or maybe not?) things, but is interesting to see how we are enhancing our regular "code, build, deploy" to have more complex workflows behind-the-scenes that allow you to become "faster", and more performant (and ultimately save some Cloud $) We also comb over the news, with the big NVIDIA / ARM deal falling through, costing around 1.25 billion dollars (insert Dr. Evil theme here) since it was done as a deposit for a successful transaction. Our local curdmudgeon offered his services as an money-holder and arbitrer for future NVidia / ARM contracts! (for a much much smaller sum than 1.25 billion).

05 Feb 2018 | Episode 30. On Meltdowns, Payara, and the state of Java EE (with Eclipse's Executive Director Mike Milinkovich) | 01:14:23
What an eventful time for being a Softare developer. We got a Meltdown, and a Spectre in our field to begin with, and we also have some interesting news brewing from Payara. But most importantly we secured an interview with no other than Eclipse Foundation's own Executive Director Mike Milinkovich! He takes us into an inner tour of what's going on with JavaEE (and the handoff between Oracle and the Eclipse Foundation). We talked on all topics EE, including namespaces, future names, clarifications on what is being open sourced and the relevancy of the JCP in today's climate. In all, even if you think you don't use Java EE (hint...you are probably using specs that are surviving under the EE umbrella...Json much?) you should take a listen!

11 Jun 2018 | Episode 34. On twitter, IPOs, vulnerabilities, (Java)script name copyrights, and IBMs play on JVM Maintenance | 01:04:18
So we start with Twitter news (change your password) to then dive into exciting news this month. There are a couple of notable IPOs and Aquisition including @pivotal, and @smartsheet. (Congrats!). We then take a detour onto Mesosphere raising $125 million (and talk about if all these valuations feel right?) to then see Cambridge Analytica disbanded. Oh, and think twice about naming something with "Java" in your app as Oracle seems to flexing more Copyright muscle. Lastly we see a new play from IBM where they will provide support for OpenJDK's OpenJ9. What does this mean for Oracle and their commercial support? Only time will tell. But that doesn't stop us from speculating about it! So take a listen to a fully charged Java OffHeap! We thank DataDogHQ for sponsoring this podcast episode

02 May 2018 | Episode 33. Oracle vs Google, US Vs Microsoft, and now you can keep your salary a secret | 01:06:57
We start this podcast swinging, looking like a 80's boxing series, we are in round 5 of Oracle vs Google (we just offer a small update). Then we dive into a new California ruling that's taking the tech world by storm (Wage history cannot be used to discriminate against minorities), and lastly we land into US vs Microsoft, which dropped their lawsuit because of the recently passed CLOUD act...Not a good thing. So take a listen as we dive into all of these topics while introducing a new pundit (Janine Patterson) to the group!

06 May 2015 | Episode 2. Tales of Microsoft, JavaScript as Bytecode, the new Cobol, and of Orphaned projects! | 01:20:02
Ooof, we start this podcast with the news that Microsoft is coming to our turf and is introducing their core .net libraries for Mac and Linux. We then dive into this theory of JS being the Bytecode of the web (Java Webstart, you tried). Then we got called "old", as in Cobol old (getoffmyLawn!) to finally talk about Groovy, Grails and what does it mean when a project loses its "home". Always entertaining, with a lot of opinions abound! DO follow us on twitter @offheap Links and such.

04 Dec 2018 | Episode 39. RedHat + IBM are now one, and Amazon introduces a new Java Flavor (Corretto) | 01:13:58
Oh my! It's an interesting month in the Java space. IBM just acquired RedHat, and we are just wondering what does that mean for the Java Ecosystem. We don our pundit hats and try to see the different perspective on what that does to their redundant Projects (Openliberty and Wildfly). Also, RedHat is the official maintainer of the OpenJDK 8 branch... What would happen now? (or in the near future) under IBM's stewardship? We also jumped into Amazon introducing another OpenJDK flavor, and wonder what does it mean for the (now growing) OpenJDK alternatives. Is it fragmenting? Or growing? What is Amazon's purpose on its OpenJDK flavor of Corretto? In all, an incredibly intersting episode. Make sure not to miss this one! We thank DataDogHQ for sponsoring this podcast episode

30 Oct 2022 | OffHeap 76. On license changes and Open Source Software | 01:24:20
If you haven't heard, Akka has changed is open source license (from Apache to Commercial). And if you have been using Akka, that's significant! We have seen this happen a couple of times to a lesser extent in cloud products (MongoDB and Elastic comes to mind), but (we think) this is the first time we see a license change in something that's so fundamental as an enterprise integration framework like Akka Join us as we explore the ramifications of this move, both for Lightbend, and for the industry. Does this mean that Open Source and its business models (like paid extended features or tooling, or support contracts) is over? Would Akka be forked? Would it sink or swim? Will Lightbend survive. We don't know all (or any of the answers) but we sure spend time trying to understand what are the possible answers to these questions.

01 Oct 2019 | Episode 47. Microsoft flexing its Java Muscle, JavaFX is Alive and Well, and "Would you approve my low quality PR?" | 01:07:10
Oh gosh, there's so much news going around, beginning with Microsoft acquiring JClarity (and all that brain trust that comes w/it!). Martinj Verburg, Kirk Pepperdine, and Ben Evans are household names when it comes to Java (including their efforts on spinning and maintaining AdoptOpenJDK.net). It shows that Microsoft is serious, and they want to invest in a big way in the Java Ecosystem And of course! This is one of the few episodes where our local Curmudgeon (@michaelminella) won't be talking too much on the following topic, since VMWare came back and bought Pivotal (again!). We are pretty sure that VMWare just wanted Michael back, but they had to buy the whole Pivotal to do so. And then we check up on JavaFX, which its alive and well, thanks to many contributors, but one company is really putting tons of effort and making it a first-class citizen of the Java Ecosystem. GluonHQ! As an old Swing developer, I relish that while web is good, there's still something around desktop (and native-like mobile) applications. And we ended up with a big discussion on the Tampere University Study, called "Does Code Quality Affect Pull Request Acceptance? An empirical study". We all have different opinions on it as we come from way different backgrounds. In all, an interesting discussion that reveals what we tend to forget, that Coding is a social activity! In all a jam-packed episode with great news, announcements, and punditry. Take a listen now! (and if you can, buy us a beer!) We thank DataDogHQ for sponsoring this podcast episode
