Some candidates are running as members of specific parties. They are not the major political parties, and since it's relatively easy to establish a party, there are so many of them out there. I apologize for the incorrect statement and any confusion it may have caused.

We highlight three recent incidents that illustrate the media's failure to fulfill its societal role: the cover-up of Johnny & Associates founder's lifelong sex scandal, the unethical production of a TV drama leading to an artist's suicide, and the paparazzi-like reporting of Shohei Ohtani and Major League Baseball.

01 Sep 2024Changing Faces, Same Game? The Japanese Party Leadership Election00:24:13

In this episode, we delve into the upcoming leadership election of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), set for September 27.
We will explore the election process as well as the leading candidates.

We also touch on the state of Japan's opposition parties and its leadership election.

Finally, I wish to share with you my thoughts on the broader implications of the LDP's enduring dominance, highlighting the challenges of political reform in a system heavily shaped by one-party rule.

08 Oct 2024Ishiba’s Gamble: The National Election and Japan’s Future00:17:39

In a surprising turn of events, Shigeo Ishiba, a long-time outsider within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected party leader and became Japan's 102nd Prime Minister. Facing a divided LDP, where the dominant Abe faction opposes him, Ishiba immediately called for a national election, aiming to strengthen his position by securing public support. This decision is controversial, as many view it as a political gamble driven by his weak standing within the party.

Despite huge public dissatisfaction with the LDP, particularly due to corruption scandals, the opposition parties like the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP) have been weak in presenting clear policies other than to say that there needs power change and political reform.

This episode reviews the recent LDP leadership election, Shigeo Ishiba’s gamble on the upcoming national election, and its implications, which could potentially reshape Japan’s entire political landscape.
