Unfortunately, this week Gina has come down with shingles! As she's not feeling so good, we thought we'd do something different and rope in a guest presenter - namely, Izzy's husband Nick Moore, an author, poet and professional copywriter - to have a chat about writing. As artists we communicate through the art - but we do occasionally need to string words and sentences together to communicate about our art, in our newsletters, blogs, and social media posts. Nick and Izzy talk about how we should approach our writing, and Nick gives some useful tips on making our written communication more effective. Isobel and Gina are both practicing artists and tutors specialising in machine embroidery, but we’re still figuring it all out! We chat about combining the creative process with running a business and hope that you will find inspiration and support for your own creative journeys. As it was through following each other's blogs that we first met, it seemed appropriate to take a closer look at our blogs and our blogging habits. We look back at our reasons for starting a blog and what we were writing then, compared with our reasons for continuing, and what we are writing now. We also discuss whether there's even still a place for blogs within how we communicate as artists, and talk about how we decide what's appropriate for sharing in a blog, compared to what we may or may not share on other social media platforms. Finally, we consider the sometimes tricky question of knowing when, how and if to say something, and when to keep schtum - something we don't always get right! 31 Dec 2020 | Looking back, looking forward (3) | 00:46:59
Welcome to a new podcast for all stitchers, embroiderers, textile artists and creative souls, where we have friendly informal conversations about what it actually means to be an artist working in textiles. Isobel and Gina are both practicing artists and tutors specialising in machine embroidery, but we’re still figuring it all out! We chat about combining the creative process with running a business and hope that you will find inspiration and support for your own creative journeys. This episode is all about reflecting on the crazy year that was 2020, and looking ahead to 2021. Looking back, we discuss what went according to plan, what didn't, what went well, how life changed, and which changes we'd keep. Looking forward, we discuss whether it's even worth setting goals for the new year, what those goals may be, as well as some things we'd like to learn or explore further. We also talk about planning tools that we've used in the past and want to try in 2021. Mentioned in this episode: Getting Things Done by David Allen("GTD") Other useful tools include Trello, which we both use to plan this podcast, and Dingbats Journals, which we're going to try out for our bullet journals. We'll report back this time next year to let you know how we get on! The music is Dear Autumn by Ikson and you can find it at https://soundcloud.com/ikson.

23 Mar 2023 | Minefield or manners? (58) | 00:47:11

09 Mar 2023 | Where to start if you had to start again? (57) | 01:00:40
What would you do if you lost it all - your creative work, your tools and supplies, your archive...where would you start, to replace it? Would you? This was the knotty question asked by a listener to the podcast! Welcome to our podcast for all stitchers, embroiderers, textile artists and creative souls, where we have friendly informal conversations about what it actually means to be an artist working in textiles. Isobel and Gina are both practicing artists and tutors specialising in machine embroidery, but we’re still figuring it all out! We chat about combining the creative process with running a business and hope that you will find inspiration and support for your own creative journeys. NB: While we approached this question from a purely hypothetical viewpoint, with the luxury of being able to treat it somewhat lightheartedly, we are aware that for many artists elsewhere, most recently in New Zealand, this has sadly become their reality. Our hearts go out to them, and what they must be going through. Even after our discussion, we cannot imagine or comprehend what this must really be like. We didn't intend in any way to minimise or trivialise what is for many, a devastating, life-changing occurence. As artists we are part of an international family and we feel each other's losses and pains very deeply. If our discussion has taught us anything, it's that creative people are creative people, independent of the resources they have, and nearly always able to find a way through - even if the journey is hard. 06 May 2021 | Putting a price on art (12) | 00:47:02
How do you price your art? In this episode we talk about the different ways we've tried, or considered, for pricing our work. Along the way we talk through various questions that come up when trying to put a price on creative work. Does where you sell your work affect the price? Does it matter what prices other people are charging? Can you price textiles in the same way as paintings or other forms of art? How do you account for all the costs involved? Is there a difference between pricing and selling art made as a hobby, with art made for a living? As usual, we don't have all the answers so please get in touch to let us know your experience of pricing your work! You can contact Izzy here and Gina here.
