16 Feb 2023 | Our Daughter. Tessa. Behind The Scenes | 00:48:53
Tessa is our daughter. She is 18. In two days' time, she will leave me, Brian and her older brother (and the home where she grew up) to start a new life in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. Alone. Brian and I will officially be empty nesters. Regular listeners to our podcast will know the effect this huge transition has had on us. Especially me. These past few months have been tough. I always imagined that when the time came for my kids to leave home, I would be this super cool, open, liberal, go-with-the-flow parent. One who relished the opportunity of having the house to herself so she could indulge in some grown-up, mature stuff with her husband. But no. The opposite is true (Sorry, Bri). I'm clinging to those apron strings so tightly that the poor girl can't go to the bathroom without me trailing behind her... In this week's behind-the-scenes episode, you will be treated to something very rare. A one-to-one in-depth talk between me and my daughter. In it, she shares every thought going through her lovely head as she makes this big transition into adulthood. Enjoy. PS: Enjoyed the show? Email me at liz@itsadrama.com and let me know! I will pass any messages on to Tessa Liz's Book UpdateThe manuscript is currently with the editor. I need to get a cover design, think of a title and then... voila! It should be ready to release in March 2023! Keep listening for more sneaky peaks, and I will let you know when you are able to pre-order! My NewsletterSign up HERE, and I will send you my free weekly newsletter. It is filled with nothing but goodness, laughter and thought-provoking stuff. You will love it. But be warned. Sometimes I cry and drink wine while I'm writing. All at the same time. If that sounds like your sort of thing, then sign up here, and we will be lifelong friends.

28 Nov 2023 | Gatecrashers, royalty & deranged morning routines | 00:45:34
Liz and Brian’s morning routine has changed drastically. Just when they thought they’d discovered a nice quiet hidey-hole to indulge in some golfy meditation, a bunch of rude gatecrashers (and a soggy beast) forced Liz to act quite strangely. Talking of strange… In this weeks husband and wife we discuss the glorious habits of the Queen’s alkie sister, why Brian feels inferior to a hunk who never sleeps and what on earth we will tell our 19-year-old daughter, Tess when she comes home for Christmas and is faced with a lucky bag. Jet lag. Is there anything worse than finding yourself wide awake at 3 am with the dreaded jet lag? Pacing around the house like a deluded tiger, trying to decide whether it would be best to watch TV or clean the cutlery drawer out? In this week's podcast, Sonny and I talk about jet lag and a few proven ways in which you can avoid it. And no. My suggestion wasn't to get as drunk as possible on the plane thank you very much. Regardless of whether you are moving to New Zealand or planning to visit when the borders open, there are a few crucial things you should know. Like what NOT to say in New Zealand. Brian and I thought it would be fun to share seven kiwi BIG no-no's in this week's show. That way, when you eventually get off the plane in Aotearoa, you can get on with the good stuff. Like making friends with hobbits and climbing snow-peaked mountains. Enjoy! What NOT To say in New Zealand.
It's such fun researching new countries, especially such wondrous places like New Zealand. Before you arrive in the land of the long white cloud, there are a few essentials that'll make your experience easier—learning a bit of the New Zealand slang, for example—knowing your chooks from your chocks. Getting a sneak-peek into typical New Zealand people; finding out what makes them tick. All that kind of stuff. But what about the things that you SHOULDN'T do?? What if you ask a question in a busy kiwi bar and suddenly hear a pin drop? Gulp.
In this week's podcast episode, Brian and I talk about:

23 Sep 2021 | Living in New Zealand With Food Allergies | 00:42:54
Yesterday I was asked by a member of our private community, 'Is the food in New Zealand better?' While this is a huge topic (and those who know me will have probably guessed my answer), I said it would depend on where you are comparing it to. Compared to the UK, yes, I think that the food in New Zealand is better. It tastes more 'real'. Don't ask me to define real because I can't. Sorry. Let's just say it hits a different spot on the taste buds. After talking to this community member for a while I discovered her reason for asking the above question. She had severe food allergies and was trying to gauge what life in New Zealand would look like. In this week's show, I talk to Jenn Morris. Jenn is from the Youtube channel, A Thousand Words. She emigrated to New Zealand over a decade ago and she has various food intolerances and allergies that she lives with.

So...Is The Food in New Zealand Better? If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand and you have an allergy or food intolerance, your big question will be how you will cope. Is the food in New Zealand better?
In this week's episode Jen shares: How she didn't have any of these food intolerances until she moved to New Zealand and what that looked like. How she copes living in a (very) small town in regards to her special dietary needs. Grocery shopping in New Zealand. Eating out with her special dietary needs. Whether she thinks that food in New Zealand is better.

26 Nov 2020 | 7 Ludicrous Misconceptions About New Zealand | 00:30:43
Luckily, one of the best things about New Zealand is the fact that the people have a bloody good sense of humour. Which is just as well. Because some of these common misconceptions about what life is like in New Zealand are quite frankly hilarious. Life in New Zealand I am not a hypocrite so I will tell you this straight up. Before we go any further. Prior to us moving to New Zealand eleven years ago, my (zero) knowledge of the country led me to believe that I would find locals living in mud huts selling coconut juice to the passers-by in exchange for a smile. I even thought that there would be little sheep in neck-scarves working at the airport. Luckily, I kept that last expectation to myself. What is life like in New Zealand? The reality couldn't be further from the truth. Which is a pity really. I think it would be quite nice to have a woolly ram checking your luggage for dirty boots. Would You Like To Join Our New Zealand Community? Are You Considering Moving To New Zealand? Do you wonder what life in New Zealand is (really) like? Do You LOVE New Zealand & dream of moving here one day? Sign up HERE and I will send you my FREE Moving to and Living in New Zealand Guide. A 5 Part Video Series! If you are moving to New Zealand from the US then you need to read this post and listen to this podcast. Because I hate to break it to you, but a lot of these common misconceptions came via my American friends. Oops. Do You LOVE New Zealand & dream of moving here one day? Sign up below and I will send you my FREE Moving to and Living in New Zealand Guide. A 5 Part Video Series! 7 (Ridiculous) Misconceptions About New Zealand 1: New Zealander's Don't Speak English I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this one. And I kind of get it. The New Zealand slang is not just confusing but quite frankly, at times, it can come across as just plain bonkers. I mean, what country says 'Yeah Nah' when you ask them a question? Huh? But fear not. English is spoken throughout New Zealand. And rest assured, once you get become accustomed to the accent and get your head around the fact that kiwis will greet you by saying 'howzit?' and then walk away without waiting for an answer, you'll be sweet. English is one of the three official languages in New Zealand (the others are Te Reo Māori and New Zealand sign language). 2: New Zealand is Connected To Australia (by a bridge actually). Er no. Not quite. Australia is a little over 2,500 miles away from New Zealand so that bridge had better be a bloody long one... Just to be clear. Australia is not connected to New Zealand. They are completely separate countries. And for god's sake don't ever make the same mistake as I did and claim you can't tell the difference between a kiwi accent and an Ozzie one. Big mistake. One says Luz and the other says leeez. Not actually that helpful when your name is Liz. 3: It's Always Sunny in New Zealand One of the wonderful things about living in New Zealand is that it is a country with seasons. Four of them in fact. While it is true that there are hotter and drier parts of the country depending on where you go, New Zealand has four seasons and all of them hold their own secret charm. If you are trying to weigh up when is the best time to visit New Zealand then I'd say it depends on what floats your boat. The summer is hot and gorgeous - if you are coming in December just remember that Christmas in New Zealand is hot (and I won't lie, that's a bit weird). The spring is warm and beautiful, the winter is sunny and cold and you can ski and the autumn is colourful and calm. Just remember, this is not Hawaii, nor is it Sri Lanka or Australia. This is New Zealand. And It rains a lot. Which is why the country is so beautifully green. 4: New Zealand People Dwell in Bungalows Along The Coast I love this one! Some New Zealander's have holiday homes along the coast. These homes are called 'Baches'. Don't ask me what the name means, I have no idea. But these baches are wooden structures, usually made up of two or three rooms, with a basic kitchen. They are an iconic part of New Zealand's culture and history. They are now hugely desirable in New Zealand due to their beachside location. But no, New Zealanders live in houses or apartments like everyone else in the world. Not a mud hut in sight. 5:New Zealander's Eat The Kiwi Bird (& it tastes like chicken) I have something to confess. In all the years that I have been living in New Zealand, I have only ever seen a kiwi bird once. And that was in a sanctuary while we were on holiday exploring some free hot pools in Rotorua. The Kiwi is a national icon, equally cherished by all cultures in New Zealand and the last place you will ever see a kiwi bird is on a New Zealanders plate. Do You LOVE New Zealand & dream of moving here one day? Sign up below and I will send you my FREE Moving to and Living in New Zealand Guide. A 5 Part Video Series! 6: There Are Cannibal Natives Living In Them There New Zealand Hills Another common misconception that you can ignore. No. There aren't any cannibals in New Zealand and there certainly aren't any natives running around in grass skirts thumping their chest and howling to the moon. Actually, I've just described my teenage son when he runs out of data. New Zealand is made up of two main cultures. European New Zealanders count for the majority of the population and the Māori population make up approx 17%. The Māori language (also known as Te Reo which means "the language") is taught throughout New Zealand schools.
7: The New Zealand Food is Boring Last week I dedicated an entire podcast episode to New Zealand food and discussed whether or not it was delicious or dull. The short answer is that New Zealand food is delicious. Like everything else in this far away country, it is underestimated and humble. New Zealand food is tasty and real. It is not piled high onto your plate, nor is it sprinkled with masses of sugar or injected with anything yucky. But it does include a lot of eggs. Or if we're going to be really kiwi - iggs. The new Zealander's love their iggs. Just forwarning you.

20 Jan 2020 | Feeling Grateful. PODCAST #14 | 00:29:05
This week's podcast is hosted by Liz and Sonny (first one of the year!) and is an up close and personal episode looking a what happened in our lives last year that left us feeling grateful (and being able to discuss the reasons why we are grateful). I think everyone should take stock (each day if possible) and take a look at what the things they have to be grateful for. Otherwise, you could turn into a moaning Minnie. And no one likes those. Teenagers are always getting a rough time about how privileged and ungrateful they are, so we thought it would be fun to discuss exactly what (if anything) this eighteen-year-old boy (sorry Sonny, young man) and his mother feels grateful for. Gulp.
05 Oct 2023 | What a Drip | 00:40:24
This week's episode is brought to you from the lovely and very gorgeous art deco city of Napier in New Zealand, where Liz and Bri are housesitting for five weeks in a rambling old villa perched high on a lofty hill. Ah...Life is perfect. Me and Bri, living like a Lord and Lady Muck in our ole kiwi manor house. What's not to love about that? Well...get yourself comfy, and we'll tell you... This Ole Kiwi HouseI don't know anyone who doesn't see a picture in a glossy house magazine of a rambling old villa and romanticize about living in it. I know I do. I see it all so perfectly. There's me, dressed in my floral frock, washing my dishes in the stone-fired, enamelled porcelain Belfast sink. Inhaling the wafts of wisteria that creep over the pretty glass paned windows... And there's Bri. Dripping snot from his left nostril. 19 Sep 2023 | How's Life Alone? Tessa. (Behind The Scenes) | 01:10:13
This week's podcast is a behind-the-scenes chat with Liz and her daughter, Tessa. Tessa (19) is a regular guest on the podcast. Since her last visit, she has flown the nest to start a new life alone in the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington. As is often the case with life, things don't always turn out as we expect them to. We don't feel the way we anticipate. Life throws us challenges, and although they are necessary for us to grow, new experiences aren't always easy or pleasant. And that's why we wanted to share this conversation. I asked Tessa to come to the microphone and share what life has been like moving away and living alone for the first time. We know that many of you listening to this podcast have kids, and we hope by sharing what Tessa feels (and her experiences), you will resonate, and it will help in some small way. Sit back, pour yourself something nice and join this intimate conversation between mother and daughter. (Click the website link to see the photos. You can also leave a comment and say hi!) In this podcast episode (which also has a video to watch should you so wish!), we explored 3 (very similar) things that New Zealand and America share a love for! My family and I have been living in New Zealand twelve years ago from the UK and it was the BEST thing we ever did. Of course, as with any country, there are pros and cons of living in New Zealand here, but in general, the New Zealand food is divine and the scenery is to die for and the kiwi people are super welcoming. 24 Feb 2023 | Gosh. Is This Too Graphic?? | 00:49:08
We need your help. Or at least one of us does. As you may remember, Liz's book is currently with the editor. The nice one with the blonde hair. Last week the editor sent back the first two chapters. Full of edits. These edits were accompanied by an email that said, "these edits are suggestions. This is your book. You get to say what stays or goes". I told you she was nice. The trouble is, there's a problem. A big problem. Something that Liz never anticipated when she so cockily employed a professional editor... Liz is a recovering people pleaser. Actually, that's a lie. She hasn't recovered yet. She's still in the acceptance phase. So our question to you, lovely listener, is this: Does what I read out in this episode offend you? Is it too graphic? Or does this slightly sick-but-still-funny attempt at humour tickle you? We would love to know. 11 Oct 2021 | Behind The Scenes #6. Feeling Fear. Having Courage | 00:36:48
It's on days like this that I tend to reminisce. Go back in my mind ten years to when Brian was working in his plumbing and heating business and I was at home with kids, doing my best to provide them with a rounded education. Through my rose-tinted glasses, I see a calm and harmonious family who had a regular wage popping through the door every week. A life where the mother felt no need to put herself onto Youtube and make big fat mistakes in front of the world. And then I take the glasses off and wipe them. And I remember that fear was always present. There was the fear of some stuffing up my kid's life by homeschooling them. Fear of Brian drowning in the pool of stress that filled his fifty-hour workweek. Fear of using cling film when the whole world had adopted that rubbery Honeywrap organic stretchy stuff. Fear of doing things differently. Fear. Loads of fear. This week's podcast was made to inspire you. To encourage you to move forward with whatever it is you are doing. Even if (especially if) that thing is causing you to wobble and shake. Last week a friend reminded me of the Mark Twain quote: Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it. Another quote that I shall be using often came from my husband, Brian Deacle Have courage. Trust in yourself. Enjoy. I know that you are going to love this episode. Let me know by leaving a comment on my blog or sending me a quick email at liz@itsadrama.com I read and reply to every single email. 27 May 2021 | Where's Best to Live? New Zealand Or Canada? | 00:30:55
New Zealand or Canada? Which is the best country to live in? New Zealand and Canada are amongst the top destinations that people choose to emigrate to. In this podcast and video, we talk about why we (a wife, husband and two small kids) chose to move to New Zealand over Canada and whether we regretted any of the decisions that we made. New Zealand Or Canada? How We Chose The One For Us Where shall we live kids? Canada or New Zealand?
The year was 2008 and we were living in the UK. My husband and I were desperate to leave the UK for various reasons and we had our immigration application logged with the Canadian Embassy. And then I (Liz) took a trip over to New Zealand to visit my sister and everything changed. The papers for Canada were cancelled and within a year we found ourselves living in New Zealand Although we made a few major mistakes within our first year, we were soon mastering the New Zealand slang words and fitting right in. 26 Nov 2019 | Couch surfing as a Family (When It's Weird & Freaky) PODCAST #008 | 00:25:58
This week’s show is a continuation from Episode 5 - Couchsurfing as a family (how to save money). After that show, we got lots of please for us to elaborate on the 'weird Italian host'. Now. Because I am very delicate and old, please don't go attacking me and say I should be grateful that this guy let four rag- bags sleep in his house. I am; I was very grateful. But. This guy was a bit... Eccentric. So we thought we'd share. That way, if you are considering couchsurfing with your kids (and you absolutely should - it's the best!) you might want to avoid this certain Italian host. Unless your kids are harder than mine and like small wooden structures. In this episode, we…

20 Jun 2022 | Greece? For a Month? How Much Does THAT Cost? | 01:08:03
Would I be wrong in guessing that at some time in your life you've dreamed of spending a few glorious weeks in Greece with your family? An idyllic Greek Island vacation. Have you spent time (sometimes hours) drooling at pictures on the internet of golden sand beaches and flat-roofed white houses that can only be found on an island in Greece somewhere in the middle of the Agean Sea? You and me both. I can't tell you how many times I have typed into Goggle 'what does it cost to spend a month on the Greek Island of Paros', only to be forced towards twenty million ads that never give me a straightforward answer. Taking a Greek Island Vacation As it happens, I am currently on holiday in Greece. I'm here with my husband and two young adult kids (notice how I called them 'young adults''? I have to do that. It's the law in our house. They don't talk to me for a week if they find out I've been calling them kids on the interweb). And as I've been paying for things I've been clocking the price so that I can report back to you with prices. So here we are. Brian and I. Your knights in Greek togas. Able and willing to share with you the exact cost of what a month in Greece will set you back. How we came to be in Greece for a month. Brian (my husband) and I have left our life in New Zealand and are currently travelling around Europe for three months. We bought a classic Peugeot 205 and we have driven it from England to Greece (where we have been for the last three weeks). This was all planned by Brian in Lockdown. While I was busy bleaching the cups. In this podcast episode, we share with you the exact cost of things in Greece. Including what a nice jug of wine will set you back. I always remember the important things. In This Week's Show Brian and I Discuss:

10 Jun 2021 | Opportunity in New Zealand. Does it Even Exist? | 00:35:36
Opportunity in New Zealand. Is there any? I can't tell you the number of times I've been asked this question. I have to say it is usually from people who are moving to New Zealand from the USA, people who say, 'we'd love to move to New Zealand but we've heard that there aren't many opportunities there.' Hmmm. Time for us to make a podcast episode and share all of the opportunities that we (my family of four) have had since moving to New Zealand twelve years ago. Does Opportunity Exist in New Zealand?
You can listen to the podcast or watch the video to hear the 5 HUGE opportunities that New Zealand has given us as a family, but before you do that, let me give you a few tips regarding opportunities in New Zealand. That way, if you are planning on living in New Zealand you will be prepared! There are some ludicrous misconceptions about New Zealand, one of those being that the country has limited opportunities. Not true. There is plenty of opportunity in New Zealand and if you are good at what you do, and are willing to go that extra mile, you will find it. Both the North Island and South Island have plenty of opportunities, just remember that becoming part of a local community is crucial to your success. Think about what you can offer New Zealand. How you can help. New Zealand people are more impressed by who you are as a person rather than what size degree you have and what car you drive. 14 Oct 2021 | Living in New Zealand. 7 Things That (STILL) Baffle Us! | 00:27:17
You'd think that after living in New Zealand for 12 years we'd have adjusted to the kiwi ways. And we have. To most things. But not all. We moved to New Zealand from England in 2009 and it was the best move that we have ever made. We have raised our kids in a country that embraces innovation and creativity, and have been warmly welcomed by the wonderful New Zealand people. But. There are times when we are reminded that this is not Kansas. That we still need to work a little harder to truly fit in. Whenever these seven events show up in life down under, we realise that try as we may, we are still adapting to life in New Zealand. Here are the seven culprits that still baffle these two slow learning brits...

03 Jun 2021 | Really?? 7 Weird Things About New Zealand | 00:30:04
If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand you'll want to learn everything you can about the country before you arrive. You'll definitely want to be told about any unusual things that might be waiting for you. Because no one likes weird surprises. Unusual Things in New ZealandThere are a few tips that we can give you to make moving to New Zealand easier. 1: Before arriving brush up on some New Zealand slang. 2: Ignore silly advice from those who have never been to the country. There are some ludicrous misconceptions about New Zealand and the last thing you need to hear are bogus facts. 3: Decide where you would rather live before you arrive. There are many differences between the North Island and the South Island so do your homework, (in saying that, it's not the end of the world if you change your mind once you arrive - shifting around the country is quite normal for New Zealand people!). 4: Listen to the podcast or watch our video on the unusual things about New Zealand and that way you will be well prepped! 19 Oct 2021 | Typical New Zealand People. 4 Stereotypes (That May Be Getting Old) | 00:36:14
If I were asked to describe what typical New Zealand people are like, the last word that would come to mind would be 'rugged'. Yet, apparently, according to the people on the washing line, this is a label that goes hand in hand with the folks down under. In this weeks show, Brian and I thought it would be fun to take four of New Zealand's national stereotypes and discuss whether we found them to be true...

Just WHAT Are They Up To Down There?I can just picture it. A bearded bushman with a wild pig slung over his shoulder. Returning home to his wife (who is making scones with one hand and shearing sheep with the other). 'Throw that on the Barbie love and while it's cooking I'll neck a few tinnies with the boys...' Did I ever mention to you that, twelve years ago, I got cold feet about moving to New Zealand? It's true. I had visions of turning up to the country and finding men who spent hours drinking and polishing their fishing rods and women who wore blue overalls. Luckily I put my big girl pants on and went ahead with our plans. And while some things (like learning the New Zealand slang) took some getting used to, I am happy to say that I am yet to meet any troglodytes.
In this week's podcast episode Brian and I talk about:

30 Mar 2021 | Life in NZ. Why (Some) Immigrants Fail To Settle | 00:29:27
We have been living in New Zealand for twelve years. We arrived from the UK where we had a comfortable home, my husband was on a good wage and both of my kids were at school. Within a year of moving to New Zealand, we were living in a rented house and my husband was on half the wage. Did I want to go home? At times, yes. But we were so determined to make New Zealand work that we did everything in our power to make it happen. Living in New Zealand. Why 30% of Immigrants Go Home
But not everyone is as lucky as us. In 2019 Stuff.co reported:
Out of the 99,300 non-New Zealanders that arrived here last year, 28,000 left and 71,000 stayed". New Zealand population statistics manager Peter Dolan said the cooling in net migration last year was a result of the increase in those leaving the country after migrating here in the past.
For some people, the New Zealand cultural differences are so far from what they are used to that they pack up and leave. Homesickness is very real. When you move to the other side of the world, leaving behind everyone and everything you have only ever known, it is only natural to feel feelings of loss and regret. (Unless where you have left is utterly terrible of course). Why Can't Some People Make a Life in New Zealand? 🇳🇿 Lack of research plays a big part. And being unrealistic. There are many misconceptions about New Zealand, one of those being that this is the land of milk and honey. Which of course it isn't. When people arrive here and discover that work still exists, as does lining up at the grocery store and talking to the teacher about 'that child' who is bullying yours, they get disheartened. They become bitter. Worry that they have made a massive mistake. Instead of embracing their new way of life, learning the New Zealand slang and looking, they attempt to replicate their old ways in their new country. And to some extent, this can work. We know people who only have British friends. They go to their house every weekend and watch British TV. Eat British food and talk about 'back home. Personally, I don't think this is sustainable. There is only so much you can say about the price of Heinz Baked Beans. Americans in New Zealand also find it tough. Although personally, every American that we have met have found the country to be so refreshing that they embrace the change with open arms.
5 Reasons Why (Some) Immigrants to New Zealand Can't settle
In this week's podcast episode, Liz and her husband Brian, discuss 5 of the most common traits that cause (some) immigrants to leave New Zealand. I say some because I don't want you to become disheartened. Some of these points that we make are totally natural and even if you find yourself doing them that doesn't necessarily mean that you won't make it work in New Zealand. You will. But only if you want to. Have your breaking in period and then embrace the country for what it is. Holding on to your old life will only prevent you from moving forward and that's not why you moved to New Zealand.
Either way, good luck with your move to New Zealand and don't forget to share this post with anyone who would love it too!

19 Jan 2022 | 7 Things You WON'T Miss When You Move To New Zealand | 00:34:00
If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand from the UK (or elsewhere for that matter) and are concerned about a few things you may miss, you are going to really LOVE this show! Last week, Brian and went on holiday. We stayed in a suburb of Dunedin called Port Chalmers. We loved it. Not only were we are away from the kids that never stop eating and the lawn that never stops growing, but we were able to explore one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand. It was during this time in the South Island, that we realised there were some things, things that we'd been longing for these past twelve years, were right here under our noses. Imagine that. Ready to find out what they are? Let's go!

06 Sep 2021 | Behind The Scenes Episode 2: Our 20 Year Old Son | 00:40:02
Hello and welcome back! This is the second (of an experimental) six-part series. A behind-the-scenes podcast where we go deeper into our family life and share some things that we think (we hope!) you might be interested in and may help you. So many of you have asked us to talk more about personal matters: being a parent, traveling the world, homeschooling, starting online businesses and so here we are. In this episode, we catch up with Sonny. If you are a long-time listener of this podcast you will know that Sonny is our son. It was Sonny's idea, way back in 2018 (when he was a wee 17 year old) to start this podcast that you are listening to right now. In This Podcast Sonny talks about:

26 Mar 2020 | Staying Positive In Lockdown PODCAST #20 | 00:37:48
Yesterday, at 12 pm, New Zealand went to level 4 and as such, the entire country is now in lockdown for (a minimum) of four weeks. Saying it and doing it are two different things. When you are going about your daily life, walking to work and drinking coffee in cafes with buskers outside, the idea of spending a month with the same people behind closed doors seems somewhat of a novelty. It wouldn't be too bad, you think to yourself. And then it starts. And after two hours of walking from the lounge to the bedroom, you begin to fantasise about getting into your car and driving to the supermarket for a packet of chewing gum. On this week's podcast of our family chats about how to stay positive while being locked together under the same roof. Me, my husband (Brian) and our soon to be nineteen-year-old son discuss fear, panic and the importance of staying positive in such unsettling times.
13 Dec 2019 | Backpacking India (Is it as scary as everyone says it is?) PODCAST # 010 | 00:29:04
After spending seven weeks backpacking around India with my kids (teenagers age 16 and 13) I thought we should do a podcast on the country (and put to bed the silly myths that surround visiting India). When I told people that we were planning a trip to India the response was...let's say colourful. Some (mostly those who were born before the 1960s and had spent their youth discovering Asia on a couple of quid) encouraged us: 'you'll love it' they said and went on to talk about the beautiful Indian beaches or the temples in Hampi. But others weren't so encouraging. They warned us about getting sick and losing ten stone, said that we might get eaten by giant rats and be left for dead— or worse, pushed out into the river Ganges on a raft made from a billion plastic bottles.

01 Feb 2023 | What a Bummer | 01:00:30
Bummer: Noun. 1. An unpleasant situation. 2. A Traveler. 3. A motherless calf. 4. A fouler. We make lots of bloopers on this podcast. Say embarrassing things that make the other person's jaw drop. Sometimes we edit these blunders out, but most of the time, we leave them in. I'd like to tell you that this is because we are transparent and real. Authentic and vulnerable. But the truth is, we're lazy. Editing takes ages. Hours, sometimes. There's no WAY Bri can spend that much time fine-tuning our conversations and turning them into something kind and intelligent. Not when the hedges need trimming. Take this week's episode, for example. Here is part of the conversation that Liz and Brian have about a certain man-eater that took a fancy to Brian in Paris: Liz: "She fancied you...No sooner were we on the road than she sent you that Whatsapp message." Bri: "She was just being nice" Liz: "Yeah...but she didn't know that you would be reading her message from the front of the car, did she? You with your smelly bum..." I know. How cruel. A (just for the record) totally untrue. Lies. All of it. Honest. In this week's episode, Liz and Brian talk about...Brian's emotional state. The reality (and horribleness) of being empty nesters. The fancy pants flirt. Toilet troubles. And Liz will continue to read the (unedited, yet-to-be-released) snippet from Chapter one of her new book!

Liz's Book UpdateThe manuscript is currently with the editor. I need to get a cover design, think of a title and then... voila! It should be ready to release in March 2023! 22 Feb 2019 | Couchsurfing. How To Travel The World For Free. PODCAST #005 | 00:31:26
This week, the podcast focused on Couchsurfing. We recently backpacked around the world with our kids for a year. Our budget was approx $75 a day for the four of us - which wasn't easy considering we have two gannets as teenagers.
This week on the podcast we explored the dark murky waters of Couchsurfing. We recently backpacked around the world with our kids for a year. Our budget was approx $75 a day for the four of us - which wasn't easy considering we have two gannets as teenagers. One of the ways we were able to stick to our budget was by Couchsurfing. In case you aren't familiar with this amazing organization, it is a website that pairs travellers - who are in need of somewhere to stay, with a host, who has a spare room, bed (or sometimes a couch) to offer.
Couchsurfing. What is it and Why Does The Thought Of It Terrify Me?
We wanted to discuss the pro's and con's of Couchsurfing and to try and answer the most commonly asked questions that people have. Also, when I tell people that we took our teenagers to sleep on strangers couches they are quite rightly filled with doubt! There is a misconception (which I too used to have) that Couchsurfing is for twenty-year-olds who are looking for a good time. Not true. And anyway, even when I was twenty I was still boring so that puts an end to that theory.
Some of the points that were raised were:
All of these questions and more were discussed, and hopefully, we convinced you that if you are looking to travel and haven't got much money (but you have got a great sense of adventure), then Couchsurfing really is the best. There is a fabulous story that we touched on. We were in Italy and one particular Couchsurfing host was ...let's say 'eccentric'! I loved him, (because I am weird and slightly vindictive) but the kids were honestly terrified. Seriously, they were never in any danger - they simply saw how one crazy Italian man lived his life. It was a brilliant experience. Anyway, have a listen to Sonny's interpretation of this and let me know if your teenagers would have felt the same. If you would like to hear more about the crazy Italien then leave a comment and we will see to it!

Questions include: Did writing this book and making the audiobook affect your marriage? What was the hardest part of the audiobook process? How did the kids feel about being so exposed in the book? Was making this book anything like you expected? Enjoy! Where to buy the Audiobook:If you are in the USA and are new to Audible, use THIS LINK and get your FREE copy of The Travel Bog Diaries Here! 02 Jan 2020 | Moving to New Zealand. How, Why & The Hoops PODCAST #12 | 00:37:30
This week's podcast on moving to New Zealand is hosted by me, (Liz ) and my husband Brian. We moved to New Zealand from the UK with our two kids in 2009 and have now been living in New Zealand as a family (our kids are now 18 and 15) for more than ten years. Our reasons for leaving the UK to start a new life in New Zealand were personal and rather jumbled. It was a kind of 'let's give it a go' decision and one which neither of us has ever regretted. Not ever. Amongst our other genie wishes, we longed for more space for the kids (which we have), less stress (tick) and more opportunity (I'll never be sure on this one, but I don't think we would have done the things we have - homeschooled both of our kids, built our own home, travelled the world for a year had we not moved to New Zealand, so, yes opportunity gets a tick too!).

Last week I received this email. "Hi. I am thinking of moving to New Zealand with my family but I am concerned that as we are moving from the UK, my eldest son (who is 12) will be bored. Could you give me any advice?" I have two kids, a boy age 18 (note to oneself, must stop calling him a kid) and a daughter who is 15. We have been living in New Zealand for almost eleven years. We emigrated from the UK for a better way of life. And yes. We found it.

18 Dec 2019 | Bloody Hell. Travelling in India by Sleeper Bus. Podcast #11 | 00:30:02
I love you India, I really do. I dedicated an entire India podcast on what it was like traveling in India for the first time. No matter what time of day you ask me - regardless of whether my hormones are playing up or not. I will always tell anyone I meet that traveling in India for seven weeks - backpacking across your beautiful land with my kids was one of the best experiences of my life. But bloody hell. Your sleeper buses? They really are something else. My kids were 16 and 13 when my family embarked on not one, but two of India's overnight busses and I thought it only fair to share our experience on this podcast. Just in case, you are thinking of doing it yourself one day. (*Spoiler alert - and you must! It is an adventure!)

04 Feb 2020 | Fun Things To Do in Charleston, SC. PODCAST #16 | 00:31:36
This week's podcast walks you through a budget-friendly and fun weekend with kids in Charleston, SC; one of the most popular and unique travel destinations in the world! Last year my husband and I took our two kids ( teenagers age 16 and 13) to Charleston, SC for a long weekend. But. There was a catch. As always we were on a budget (nothing new there then ) and I must admit, I was somewhat worried as to whether we'd be able to make our money stretch. Our budget was $80 per day for the four of us. Did we do it?
21 Apr 2021 | Is New Zealand (a Bit) Backward? | 00:34:45
Is New Zealand behind the times? In this podcast, Brian and I talk about a topic that so many people (people who have usually never even been here) like to say. That is that New Zealand is behind the times. A bit backwards. Slow to catch on. "Ohhh... it's like the UK in the 1950's". There are air raid shelters and everything... There are many misconceptions about New Zealand and one of them is that the New Zealand people live in grass huts and don't have internet. How rude. Everyone knows that isn't true. Our houses are made of very nice modern-day mud. Is New Zealand Behind The Times?
In this episode, we discuss ten points that prove New Zealand is NOT behind the times including: Smoking Internet Cafés School safety Doctors Banking **** (rather not say...it's a surprise!) Women's vote Gay marriage

06 Oct 2024 | The Book I'm Scared to Write | 01:11:10
Feeling is healing. I've read those words a lot while grieving my mum. And it's true; to a certain extent, it's true. But what people fail to mention is that feeling also hurts like hell. And no one likes to feel pain. Not if they can possibly avoid it. In this week's behind-the-scenes episode, we share a personal healing practice that Liz has undertaken to help navigate the grief around losing her mum. Writing. Liz is writing her second book, but what started as a happy, healing book about New Zealand has morphed into something quite different. An unexpected beast. Something that scares Liz to write and scares Brian to stand by and witness. Thank you for being with us and for listening. You are loved, you are needed, and our hearts always beat with yours. 12 Mar 2019 | How Expensive is it To Live in New Zealand PODCAST #006 | 00:26:50
We have decided to do a series of life in New Zealand and so this weeks podcast covered the basics on how expensive it is to live in New Zealand. We have been living in New Zealand for ten years. We emigrated from the UK where we lived in the very posh (and bloody expensive) city of Bath. If you are posh you have to say 'Barrth'. I always like to try my best. We now live in the very down to earth, (although a little more expensive to live) region of Taranaki on the West Coast of the north island in New Zealand and we love it. So many people comment on how New Zealand is expensive, and yes, compared to some places in the world (especially Asia) it is quite pricey. Like anywhere though, there are pros and cons of living in New Zealand, but generally, I think the cost of living is pretty reasonable. Here's what we covered in the podcast:
How Expensive Is New Zealand?
Housing In New Zealand
We also talk about the cost of renting a house in New Zealand, particularly Taranaki, the region in the North Island where we live. Last year we took the kids backpacking around the world for a year and rented our house out while we were gone. we charged $600 NZD a week which is $410 US and £315 GBP. Ours is a four-bedroom house in the country and we rented it fully furnished.
Running A Car in New ZealandIf you watch our latest vlog on the cost of living in New Zealand you will see how much new cars are but here's a rough average of what cars cost to run in New Zealand:
Teenage Entertainment In New Zealand
Average Salary In New Zealand
We then talked about the average wages in New Zealand which is $49,000 NZD that equates to $33,000 US and £25,000 GBP. If you are a tradesman, a teacher, a nurse or a GP then listen to the podcast and I tell you how much you can expect to earn if you were to come to New Zealand and live.
We hope you enjoyed the show this week, as I said, this will be a series of life in New Zealand, how much things cost, the Pro's and Con's of living on the other side of the world and more! If you like the podcast, please don't forget to rate us on iTunes and leave a comment over there - it helps our algorithm hugely!
See you next week,

15 May 2023 | Book cover FEAR! Behind the scenes | 00:41:33
After almost two and a half years, I am almost ready to publish my first book. The biggest fear that I had to overcome when going ahead with this book (I self-published) was the book cover. I knew what I wanted, and let's just say... my final choice was very...real. I knew when I designed the cover that it was exactly what was needed to introduce this book. It sums up the book perfectly. Perfectly imperfect. Still, I have never felt so vulnerable, terrified or exposed in all of my life. This behind-the-scenes podcast shares that process and explains why I had to leave myself open and vulnerable in order to remain true to myself and my readers. Enjoy!

21 Sep 2021 | Behind The Scenes #4. Why we REALLY Left The UK | 01:09:05
Last week, when I received an email from a listener from the Middle East. (The fact that we have people listening to us from the middle east blows my mind with excitement but that is a different story). Here is a snippet of what it said: "One second thing is the reason why you guys decided to move abroad. I am from the middle east so everybody want to move away from here. It is really interesting for me to listen to a westerner moving abroad".
After reading this email it suddenly struck me. How one person's ideal country is another person prison. Maybe prison is a tad harsh but it is late at night when I'm writing this and I can't think of the correct word so let's stick with Why WOULD anyone want to emigrate from the UK? And while we're at it, why would anyone want to leave New Zealand and live in Australia or England? Why on earth would anyone consider leaving beautiful, gorgeous France to live in America? But they do. Every single day.
I know that you are going to love this episode. Let me know by leaving a comment on my blog or sending me a quick email at liz@itsadrama.com I read and reply to every single email.
Hello and welcome back to episode 4 of It's a Drama Behind The Scenes Podcast.
In this podcast, Brian and I talk openly about:
When we agreed that staying in the UK was not an option The fear of making mistakes and how we tried to 'make do' with what we had. Money. Loss of money, making money, spending money. We've done it all. Why are some people are happy to stay put in the same house for the rest of their lives? What is it? What is that burning desire to up and move your family to the other side of the world?
Give us Some Feedback on This Podcast! We would love it if, after listening to this podcast you took the time to let us know your thoughts? I answer every single email. liz@itsadrama.com

So. I hope it's okay and that it isn't too upsetting for you—my sincere apologies if it is. My intention was never to make you feel sad, only strong. Hugged. Confident. Brave enough to speak your truth. To always say what you wish to say to the people who matter the most. Because the world needs truth. The world needs real. The world needs people like you. 09 Aug 2022 | England We Love You...Sort Of | 00:57:28
A trait of being English is that one is very patriotic. One does not slag off one's country. Absolutely not. That's very un-English. So it was hard making this week's episode. Because we had to say how we felt about returning to England. And not all of it was pretty... In this week's episode, we discuss exactly how it felt to return home to England (even though it's not home anymore). The things we (really) miss and the things that, for one reason and another, got right up our conks. 31 Jan 2019 | How to Deal With Rejection When All You Want to Do Is Bawl Your Eyes Out #003 | 00:26:42
How to Deal With Rejection When All You Want to Do Is Bawl Your Eyes Out: Part 1.Episode 3 (Part 1)Episode three (part 1) of the It’s a drama podcast was a tough one for both Sonny and me. This week we discussed the consequences of rejection from friends, how to deal with rejection and we also touched upon cyberbullying. In the past month, we have both been the victims of social rejection and we thought it would be a good idea to see how it affects not just teenagers but adults too.
I won’t lie, it was hard for me to talk about this on air. I was bullied badly as a young teenager, and the damage of that leaves me feeling very panicky and vulnerable if faced with confrontation. It is a lot easier for me to hide behind funny blog posts. As it turned out, discussing what happened on the podcast was the best thing that I could have done. Afterwards, I felt as though I had been in a therapy session. As a side note, I have never had any kind of therapy, but after opening up to my son on this week’s podcast, I can totally see why people would seek out someone to talk to.
Sonny, it seems, is a natural podcast host. He is patient and intelligent, and I very much forget when I’m talking to him that he is indeed my son.
The same boy who hours earlier, I have been moaning at to tidy the breakfast dishes away.
This week’s podcast was so juicy and needed talking about in such depth that we decided to split the show into two and have a part 1 and part 2.
Part one sees us both laying down each of our experiences and touching briefly on how being rejected made us feel. Part two is the real gold. I won’t give too much away, but just make sure you listen to part two to seek the answers you might need about how to deal with rejection and understanding the reason people behave the way they do.
As always, we would like to say thank you so much for your support. If you enjoy this podcast, please subscribe to us on iTunes and if you could leave us a short comment and rating that would help us enormously in reaching other people. ( iTunes is a fickle mistress. The more comments and subscribers a podcast receives, the further up the ladder of exposure you go.) Thank you my lovely people x

22 Jan 2019 | How Long Term Travel Affects Your Family & Being Afraid To Travel #002 | 00:26:57
How Long Term Travel Affects Different Members Of The Family
Episode 2This episode of the podcast is all about how families cope when they throw everything up in the air for a while and decide to go travelling with their kids. I have had people say to me that their kids would be nervous about leaving their friends and home for a couple of weeks. While we were travelling last year, my daughter got pretty homesick. She wanted her friends and her own bed which is understandable. I worried myself sick over the fact that we had ruined her life forever and then, the following week, she turned around and said she was happy again and wanted to continue travelling. I don't know who I was madder at. Me for crying myself to sleep and worrying myself senseless or her for telling me in the first place! A good lesson to learn here is that parents often worry about our kids for no reason. I know I do. We all do. And mostly it turns out to be a storm in a teacup.
For Pinterest!
Podcast Notes
We tried a different format for this podcast. We did a question and answer session. Three questions each.
I loved this podcast and as I mentioned above, the things that I would have said my kids were worried about turned out to be completely different to what I thought. Just shows that we don't always know what's going on in that teenage brain. I had a hard time returning back to real life and we discuss that too. Before we closed the show, I asked Sonny what book he was reading at the moment. It was Pillars Of The Earth by Ken Follett That's it from us for this week! I hope you enjoyed the show. Please comment below or send me a private message if there is a topic you would like us to talk about. I'll do my best! PS: Remember to subscribe to us our iTunes and leave a comment too!

17 Jun 2021 | Auckland?? WHO'D Wanna Live THERE? | 00:44:09
According to The Economist Intelligence Unit's 2021 Global Liveability Index, living in Auckland, New Zealand is now the number one chosen place to live in the world. And why not? The sun, the sails, the diversity. But wait. Before we all hunt for our passports and leave granny, Kansas and the wind behind, let's look at a few cold facts...
Living in Auckland New Zealand. How? Why?
If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand you have probably considered living in Auckland. Auckland has job offers, world-ranked Universities; Fabulous beaches. But are you viewing New Zealand's largest city through rose-tinted glasses? What about the five-hour traffic jams in Auckland? And the much-discussed horrendous house prices? In a recent podcast that Brian and I made we discussed, where is best to live, North Island or South Island? We discovered that medium house prices in Auckland sails in at a whopping $1.2 million NZD, compared to a cool $566,000 in Christchurch. So what gives?
Talking to Ryan About Living in Auckland, New Zealand
This week, we were lucky enough to talk to Ryan. Ryan moved to New Zealand from the USA with his school teacher wife and his two children in 2017. He and his family have been living in Auckland for the past four years. They love it. They wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Here's why. Ryan. Why Would You Live In Auckland New Zealand?Ryan and I talked intensively about why he loves living in Auckland. I asked him the following questions: Why did you choose to move to New Zealand? How did you get a visa to come to New Zealand? What about the cost to live in New Zealand? Was living in Auckland a huge bash on the wallet? Give me five reasons why you love living in Auckland New Zealand? The interview is fabulous. We have been living in New Zealand for the past twelve years, and I STILL learned an enormous amount from Ryan! Ryan also promised to come back and do a part two podcast where he shares the things that shocked him about mortgages, jobs, houses and life in New Zealand. Look out for that one!

03 Mar 2022 | Americans Living in New Zealand. What The First 6 Months Are REALLY Like | 00:52:13
Living in New Zealand. What The First 6 Months Were REALLY Like. In this week's show, we are happy to welcome back Maile and Brian! This American couple left the US almost six months ago to start a new life in Dunedin, New Zealand. They are happy with their decision (in fact, I have never met two people so in love with a country) but their journey certainly wasn't all plain sailing. Enjoy! Americans Living in New Zealand. The Highs (& The Lows). If you are moving to New Zealand from the USA then you will love this show. No one can predict how they will feel when they move to another country. Maile and Brian certainly never expected to experience the flood of emotions that came within the first few months of arriving in New Zealand. The thing that I love about this couple is their ability to talk things through. They are so very transparent. This openness is a gift to everyone out there thinking of making the same move to New Zealand. How We Met Brian and MaileLast year, Maile had emailed me to say that she was thinking of moving to New Zealand and could I put her in touch with any other nurses who were doing the same. Back then, we hadn't started the private New Zealand community that we now have, but I emailed Maile back and told her that I was about to do a podcast interview with Katie, a nurse who was in the process of moving to Dunedin. A month or so later, when Brian and I created our NZ Ahead Membership Package (Formerly Moving to and Living in New Zealand Package), I contacted Maile and Brian and asked them if they'd like to join. They did and the rest is history! A few months later Maile and Brian moved to Dunedin and in December 2021 Brian and I flew down to spend a few days with them. The Importance of surrounding Yourself With like-minded People.
Maile is a valuable and very treasured member of our private community (that we affectionately call the NZ Slackers!). The help that she offers to new arrivals and those thinking of moving to the country is priceless. Maile goes that extra mile to help people (she has just helped Emil, a nurse from the Netherlands, land a job in the same hospital as her, he and his family will move here in a few months!). It is so very exciting to watch as people come together and help each other realise their common dream of moving to New Zealand. Connect with Maile, Brian & many other wannabe kiwis by joining our NZ Ahead Membership! Are you Considering Moving To New Zealand and are desperate to know what life in New Zealand is (really) like? 06 Apr 2020 | Homeschooling. What Works & What Doesn't. PODCAST #21 | 00:32:13
Why do you need a homeschooling schedule? Because without one you will spend your days wandering from one project to another. Feeling extremely busy but accomplishing very little, if anything, at all. How strict does the home-schooling schedule need to be? Strict enough to keep everyone happy but not too strict that you become a slave to the schedule. Home-schooling isn’t easy. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. And how can it be? As parents, we already have a million things to sort out. Running a house is a job in itself. And let's not forget those parents that have to home-school and work full time. But home-schooling shouldn’t be stressful either. And neither will it be if you create the right kind of homeschooling schedule for your family.
22 Jun 2020 | What You'll Miss When You Move To New Zealand | 00:52:46
I wish I'd read a post or listened to a Podcast like this when we were looking to move to New Zealand ten years ago. At least then I would have been prepared. I could have packed a hot water bottle and a sun hat and some hankies. But I didn't. Instead, I got to the other side of the world and blubbed for six months about how my family never returned my calls and that the bathroom in the house that we were renting was cold and smelly and damp. New Zealand. Is there any better place? I'm not a doom and gloomer. No sir. Not me. My family and I have been living in New Zealand for almost a decade. We love it. New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places on earth and raising my kids in New Zealand was the best decision we ever made.

28 Sep 2020 | Unplugging: 7 (Simple) Ways To Snatch Back Precious Time | 00:37:37
I'm not entirely sure how long the term unplugging has been a thing. It used to be (back in the day) that if you were told you to unplug it was because your parents were trying to save money on the leckie bill. Someone once told my dad that if you unplugged the toaster, you'd save 5p on every bill. But nowadays, the term unplugging comes with a whole new meaning. Unplugging in 2020 means getting off the internet, stop watching so much telly and telling your son to look up from his phone so that his neck doesn't develop a permanent turtle shell shape.

The back story of The Travel Bog Diaries...It was scary. Probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done. And I've done some scary things. Doing Scary Things in LifeMoving to the other side of the world and leaving everything behind (even though Brian, my husband, had never set foot in NZ before and was taking my word that it was nice...) Taking my two kids out of mainstream school to teach them from home (even though I am not a teacher and actually don't even know the difference between a real comma and one of those with a dot above it...) Taking the money that we made from the sale of our business (fifty grand that was supposed to be for our retirement) and blowing it on a dream year-long trip back-packing trip around the world with our teenagers (even though we knew we would have to come home to no job and no money). But even that. Even ALL those things. Nothing was as scary as what I have just done. Writing a bookFor the past two and half years, I have been writing my first book. And today, I published it. I gave it to the world. Tah dah! Ladies and gentlemen, I very proudly present: The Travel Bog Diaries“THE TRAVEL BOG DIARIES: One Woman’s wickedly funny confessions of surviving family travel” If you would like a damn good laugh and read about what it REALLY looks like when you go around the world with two groaning teenagers and a husband with an acid reflux problem...then I'd love you to click here and get your mitts on The Travel Bog Diaries. PS: If you know someone who you think would love this book, then PLEASE SHARE THIS POST!!

11 Mar 2020 | How Old Is Too Old To Travel? PODCAST #19 | 00:28:49
How old is too old to travel? You know how when you get to a certain age, and you suddenly start 'playing on it?' "Ohh I couldn't possibly take the bins out - I'm far too old for that." Or "Don't ask me to hold the dog down while you cut her toenails - I'm getting on a bit. I can't kneel for long." Well, this week's guest made me feel like a right old fake. He put me in my place and showed me that you are as old as you feel. In this week's podcast episode I got to chat with Ed Nicollette. Ed is 86 years young and lives in Rochester, Upstate New York with his lovely wife Anita (who, for the record, also comes across as being twenty years younger.)
