26 Jun 2022 | EP113 - Celine, Three Pregnancies, Emergency Caesarean Birth, PNA, Stillbirth, Vaginal Birth | 02:11:04
Before I share details of Celine’s story I want to mention that parts of our conversation surround stillbirth. I know lots of you won’t be in a position to listen to an incredibly difficult story but from speaking to you, I also know many of you need to hear Celine’s story. Celine shares her first experience which resulted in an emergency caesarean birth. She then chats about suffering from PNA and the struggles that brought. We then chat about her daughter Izzy’s birth who was stillborn at 33 weeks and the days that followed. Celine then shares the birth of her second son Ollie and also chats in depth about pregnancy after loss. This episode is a long one but one I felt I couldn’t edit. I Celine shared lots of supports so I will share them in the show notes but I have tagged some in this post. The Other Side of The Door Journal

In this next episode I share my chat with Michelle who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her son. Delighted to be back in action after a few weeks off. I have so many birth stories to share with you and grateful to each and everyone of you who support the pod here, it’s honestly keeps the podcast afloat. In this episode I share my chat with Kathleen who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Kathleen welcomed her first baby, little Charlie, nearly three years ago with the support of some incredible midwives who she speaks so fondly of. She gave birth to Charlie vaginally after being induced at full term. She then goes on to share her twin pregnancy which was thankfully uneventful and the plan was to give birth vaginally. After labouring for some time Kathleen was brought to theatre to bring her babies into the world by C-section . Parts of her story are quite distressing from complications throughout surgery to their care in those early hours. I also really want to highlight that Kathleen did avail of the services of the hospital to help resolve her birth trauma. Thanks to the decision she made to do this she is in a place to revisit these memories. She also lodged a complaint with the hospital wasn’t happy with the response so took her complaint further which Is important to highlight. A taxi driver that didn’t charge her fare and walked her to the door of the hospital. A midwife that stayed with her throughout Jorges birth and another who came to Erin’s bedside every two hours to help her feed and just check-in. In this week's episode I share my chat with Edel who talks me though her three birth stories. Edel gave birth to her first little girl in a hospital as planned. In this episode I share Shauna's story. Shauna's first story is hard to0 here, she really suffered not only throughout the birth of her son but for months following his arrival. She suffered physically and mentally but finally found the strength to start healing with the support of professionals. Shauna later gave birth to her second child, a little girl. This time her story was very different being supported by so many HCP's that had her best interests at heart. In this episode I share my chat with Aoife and her wife Ciara. Together they share their experience bringing their daughter Rua into the world. They chose reciprocal IVF which is relatively new to Ireland so it's a great opportunity to be given such first hand insight into the such a new form of IVF. Together they made informed decisions which best suited what they wanted throughout conception, pregnancy and birth. 02 Dec 2024 | EP147 - Emma, Pre-Eclampsia, Birth at 35 weeks, C-section, Navigating Early Motherhood with Depression In this episode | 01:05:47
In this episode I share my chat with Emma who talks me through her pregnancy and the birth of her son Robin. Emma is also incredibly open about her struggles with depression. Unfortunately Emma’s medical team discovered she had severe pre-eclampsia so she was admitted to hospital at 34 weeks. Her son came into the world 5 weeks premature, thankfully healthy with a short stay in NICU. Emma talks us through a crippling depressive episode at 4 months postpartum, again being so honest with us. She remarks on the support she had from family, the medical professionals who gave her what needed at just the right time (some not so much!) and the moment she felt the darkness lifting. I’ve no doubt some of my listeners will relate to Emma’s story but I do want you to listen with caution. This episode might not be for you at the moment but will always be here if/when you are ready. I had the pleasure of not only sitting with Áine revisiting Cora’s birth in person but also meeting the lady herself. Áine shared so much with us. We chat about her first pregnancy which unfortunately ended in a miscarriage. As for many of us, this led to a roller coaster of emotions. Áine shares what she did to help navigate life through pregnancy loss. We then chat about her second pregnancy which thankfully went to full term. Áine shares her perspective as a midwife through pregnancy, opting for a homebirth and how difficult it can be to take that midwife hat off. When it was go time, it all happened super quick in the end and she was surrounded by everyone that was important to her. 20 Jan 2025 | EP150 (PT1/2) - Karla, Two Pregnancies, Miscarriage, One Birth, Assisted Delivery (vacuum) | 00:58:36
This week I’m sharing part one of two episodes. Karla shares so much of her life with us over these two episodes from suffering loss, birthing each of her girls, termination and over coming major surgery. This week we chat about Karla’s experience with her first miscarriage which is really tough to revisit. We then chat through her daughter’s birth, Kora. In the hospital Karla was surrounded by women who were really rooting for her. They gave her space, time and support. She did need some assistance at the latter stages of labour but thankfully all was well and Kora was up onto her chest a few moments later. Karla experienced that high, the one we wish every woman could experience but not all of us do immediately. In this week’s episode I share the second part of Karla’s story. This part of Karla’s story is pretty tough listening up until the 35 minute mark. She talks us through major surgery through Covid and her experience with termination. Karla then shares the birth of her second daughter which is such a gorgeous, positive experience surrounded by midwives who were there to support her through it all. They stood back and let her do her thing. As I say in the introduction of Karla’s story from 15-33 minutes she revisits her experience with termination. I know this will connect with some of you but for others who aren’t in a place to listen I don’t want you to miss the birth of Lyla, hence the reason I have shared that time stamp. I have done just that with this episode, I know so many of you will relate to some if not all of what Aisling speaks about. She chats about the initial overwhelm when discovering she was pregnant, her preparation for birth, her experiences (so similar but different in many ways), early motherhood, breastfeeding and much more. 18 Apr 2022 | EP104 - Sinead D, One Pregnancy & Birth, PCOS, Endometriosis, Forceps, PPH, Early Motherhood | 01:40:35
In this weeks episode I share my chat with Sinead, this is a long episode but I found it hard to edit any of our chat as I felt each stage of her journey to motherhood was so important to hear. She was diagnosed with endometriosis after years of excruciating periods and uncomfortable situations. When the time felt right, Sinead along with the support of her fertility doctor discovered she was pregnant. Many highs and lows were to follow! Her labour and birth story is certainly not linear. She met some incredibly support people who she remembers fondly and most definitely aided in helping her through a particularly difficult experience. Unfortunately she encountered others that are etched in her memory for the wrong reasons. This episode is hard to listen to in places but there is also lots of laughter in there too.

10 Jan 2022 | EP89 - Fiona, Four Pregnancies, Three Births, Homebirths, Early Pregnancy Loss | 01:28:53
I just adored listening to Fiona’s three births. Her first homebirth was 10 years ago when we knew very little about the service and her most recent homebirth was in 2018.Her first babe arrived at home by the fire in the birth pool, her second on the landing as her little girl listened to her mama from her bed and her third beneath a tree with the sun on her skin in the arms of her husband.Fiona also shared her experience with early pregnancy loss during the pandemic. As a family they took the time to honour their baby that didn’t make it earthside and I really feel there is such an important message within her story. Very often families who experience early pregnancy loss don’t feel they can fully grieve or that such a loss even justifies grief in the eyes of certain people. Fiona’s family grieved, buried their baby under an Evergreen tree and wrote letters to their little one. So so important to allow yourself to feel how you need to feel!Thank you Fiona! This episode has been brought to you by @waterfulbabywipesWaterful plastic free baby wipes contain 99.9% purified water and are both fragrance free and alcohol free. 24 Apr 2022 | EP105 - Brenda, Homebirths, Transfers, Two Unmedicated Vaginal Births, Early Pregnancy Loss, perspective from mother who is hard of hearing | 01:14:40
In this next episode I share my chat with Brenda who talks me through her two birth experiences and one early pregnancy loss. Brenda’s perspective as someone who is hard of hearing is an important listen. She talks me through suffering from what she calls “deaf anxiety” worrying that she will miss her name being called at appointments, can she lip read or can she understand everything she has been told. For this reason along with others she opted for homebirths with both of her babes. She received incredible support from her homebirth midwife when she was transferred to hospital on her first baby but unfortunately due to restrictions the same midwife couldn’t be present when she was transferred with her second. Her husband was by her side through each labour and birth. She shares so much more in this episode too including her breastfeeding journey and suffering early pregnancy loss. Months ago I tried to transcribe all past episodes to ensure the deaf community could enjoy each of your stories, this episode has lit a fire under me. Trigger warning : In this episode we chat about the loss of Pam's little girl Rosie at 18 weeks gestation. Pam goes into details surrounding Rosie's birth which some may find difficult to listen too. I am so grateful to Pam for sharing her story, as loss is still very much unspoken. Thank you Pam ❤️In this episode Pam chats about her 4 pregnancies & 3 Births. During her first experience with birth Pam required an episiotomy to aid with her little man's arrival as he had shoulder dystocia and she was also tearing into her back passage. Thankfully, he entered the world safe, happy & healthy and mum made a smooth physical recovery. She then talks us through her breastfeeding journey and also speaks honestly about her experience with PND.Pam then chats about her experience with miscarriage which as with any loss was difficult. She then chats about her second experience with labour and birth which was very different. Her little man made a swift arrival once they reached the hospital. 05 Nov 2021 | EP78 - Dairíona - One Pregnancy & Birth, Induction, Cesarean Birth, Birth During Restrictions (Sensitive Content) | 00:53:59
In this next episode I share my conversation with Dairíona who talks me through her experience of pregnancy and labouring alone thoughout COVID restrictions. Listening to Dairíonas story in many parts is difficult and for this reason I would consider her episode to be of a sensitive nature. She talks me through conception, her various hospital visits due to concerns of baby’s movement, a bleed and also erratic blood pressure. Her experience was very mixed with some medical staff being nothing but supportive but she also encountered others whom she thought could have shown her more compassion. She was induced and later, her little girl arrived into the world via Cesarean birth due to the presence of meconium in her waters. They shared some time together soaking in their little girl before her partner was asked to leave. Being alone once again with limited support took so much away from what should have been a very special time. This episode has been brought to you by @waterfulplasticfree Waterful plastic free baby wipes contain 99.9% purified water and are both fragrance free and alcohol free. She chats about pregnancy for the first time, feeling guilt for her first child whilst pregnant with her second baby and we then chat about her third pregnancy.Sinead suffered early pregnancy loss on her fourth pregnancy. She talks us through how devasting it was but also the physical aspect. Her symptoms became increasingly severe and she spiked a temperature which was later associated with a sepsis diagnosis. A strong message from Sineads's story is that of realising you're not the only person who can run the fort. It wasn't until Sinead surrendered to the signals her body was sending her to heal, that she fully recovered. We then chat about her fourth experience with birth at the height of Covid. She arrived at the hospital waving hello to the midwives and her babe was in her arms 30 minutes later. 02 Nov 2020 | EP 28 - Laura - 2 Pregnancies & Births, Homebirth, Birth During Covid19 | 01:10:14
In this week's episode I chat to Laura who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Laura and her husband started investigating their fertility after trying to conceive for a number of months. After deciding to opt out of the fertility clinic route Laura fell pregnant spontaneously. She enjoyed her first pregnancy and decided to go down the homebirth route for no other reason bar she felt it was a very natural decision. Laura's first and second pregnancy were poles apart. She really struggled with sickness and managing life pregnant with a toddler. She opted for the homebirth route once again, this time with HSE Community Midwives. Her experience was just gorgeous and I love how she tells her story. We also touch on life with a newborn & toddler in the height of lockdown. I could resonate with so much of what Laura said "constant flight or fright"!I loved her honesty, the detail, our chat and the beautiful pictures of her girls!Enjoy!

She worked with @sarah_tobin early on which enabled her to really settle in and enjoy her pregnancy. Infact, she mentions that despite being in lockdown her second trimester was one of the most enjoyable periods of her life..Claire went into spontaneous labour but did need an induction due to the presence of meconium in her waters. She then talks us through the events that followed which include various interventions and later a postpartum hemorrhage. 09 Nov 2020 | EP 29 - Clare - 3 Pregnancies & Births, Midwife Led Unit, Hospital Birth, Quick 2nd Stage, Inductio | 01:15:44
In this week's episode I chat to Clare who talks me through her 3 pregnancies & births. Clare decided to opt for MLU with her hospital on her first pregnancy but was transferred up to the consultant unit as her little babies heart rate wasn't recovering after her contractions. She talks us through the details of her first birth. .She then talks us through her second pregnancy & birth which she considers to be a healing experience. She had a very quick 2nd stage of labour with her little boy and that trend continued onto her 3rd experience. She also asked the midwives to use the Hobbs line (purple line) as an indication of dilation rather than a vaginal examination. .She then goes into her 3rd pregnancy which was during the Covid-19 outbreak so she unfortunately had to attend some of appointment's alone. She later opted for a homebirth for various reasons which I will let her go into but unfortunately this was not to be. Clare had to be induced to bring her little lady into the world. Despite this change of plan, she had a gorgeous birth experience and speaks so fondly of the arrival of her little girl. Enjoy! In this episode I chat to Maria who talks through her two pregnancies and births. Maria enjoyed both pregnancies but suffered with cholestasis through her first pregnancy which meant she needed close monitoring. Her first birth wasn't necessarily what she had hoped for. Despite being disappointed that she had an induction and epidural she found found her outlook on birth was a lot more balanced. Her second little boy made a very swift arrival en-route to the hospital. She describes her experiences and then mentions that she remembers hearing the sound of the rain hitting the car roof....I love that! Being a Birth Trauma Resolution Practitioner, Maria has provided alot of support to women and shares her views on why we now need experts in this field. Enjoy!

In our next episode I chat to Sinead who talks me through her two experiences with birth. Sinead gave birth to her little girl Lily 9 years ago shortly after the sudden loss of her husband, Geoff..Sinead talks us through giving birth with the support of her family and the days following Lily's arrival. Although her medical team were aware she suffered a 4th degree tear it wasn't until later, after a scope that they found the rectovaginal fistula. Essentially, there was a small tear between the rectum and the vagina which caused passing of stool through the vagina. She talks us through her treatment and recovery, which was slow..Sinead is so open in our conversation, again, purely to let others who have suffered through the same diagnosis know they are not alone. .We then touch on Dylan's arrival which although was an emergency C-section, Sinead considered a "walk in the park" in comparison.I have linked Sinead's Instagram account below if you would like to reachout.

In this next episode I share my chat with Doris who birthed her first baby in New Zealand. She talks us through the care system there, being induced and her boy being brought into the world via Caesarean birth. We then chat about her second pregnancy which although was planned still came as a surprise. Doris really wanted her VBAC (Vaginal birth after Caesarean) and that’s exactly how her little girl came into the world. She needed assistance during the final stages and later further assistance to ensure her uterus was contracting after baby was born. This part of her story is difficult to hear. Thankfully she recovered well and returned home to cocoon with her little family.

In this next episode I share my chat with Nessa who is a wellness coach aswell as hypnobirthing birthing coach and so much more. At the time of our conversation Nessa was living in Australia but was in the process of returning home to Tipperary where she now lives with her family. Nessa planned on birthing her boy at home with the support of her partner, midwife and doula. She prepared mentally aswell as physically staying active throughout. At 38 weeks after an unsuccessful ECV due to baby presenting breech, Nessa was told that her HB was no longer an option. She was devastated and really had to dig deep to visualise her hospital birth. After 17 hours of labour, she once again found herself having to surrender as she was prepped for a Cesarean section to bring her boy into the world.Nessa said something that stuck with me "Luke taught me so many parenting lessons before he was even born". In this next episode I chat to Lorraine, the founder of Globebaby Doula. Lorraine is a full spectrum doula and has created various workshops to support her clients on their journey into motherhood. Due to her own experiences, Lorraine realised there was a very obvious need to support those about to embark on childbirth! She can help her clients with prepariton for labour, birth, breastfeeding and also help out at home with the seemingly simply tasks like light house work.We chat about a 3-Step-Rewind process that Lorraine offers, which can help lift heavy symptoms or thoughts linked with a difficult birth experience. So interesting and a tool so necessary at the moment. https://www.globebabydoula.com https://www.instagram.com/globebabydoula/

18 Jan 2021 | EP 41 - Megan - 3 Pregnancies, 2 Births, Epidural, PND, Birth during Covid-19 | 00:59:08
In this episode I chat to Megan who talks me through her three pregnancies & two births. Unfortunately Megan had a miscarriage early on with her first pregnancy. She conceived quickly with her little girl Aylla and she goes into all the details surrounding her pregnancy and birth. She speaks of her experience with PND which I know will resonate with many of you. I asked Megan to share her story on the podcast due to how honest and forthcoming she has been in sharing such a private time of her life. It's imperative to our health and the health of our families that we speak up and ask for help if we don't feel ourselves. Megan then talks me through her third pregnancy and the birth of her son CJ. She discusses her anxieties at the prospect of giving birth during the pandemic and the possibility of being alone throughout labour. During her pregnancy she attended the Coombe for an appointment with a mental health specialist and together they created a plan which would ensure Megan did not suffer as she did after her first birth.Thankfully, her postnatal experience has been very different second time round. Along with Megan's episode, I will link supports on the website which might be of use to you should you need help. Once again, please do not suffer in silence. You will never regret getting help and it's never too late to avail of it.Enjoy!

01 May 2022 | EP106 - Tjarda (Young Mother), Two Pregnancies & Births, Positive Hospital and Homebirth | 02:05:15
This week I’m sharing my chat with Tjarda who talks me through her journey to motherhood from discovering she was pregnant at 19 to having the most incredible support bringing each of her babes into the world. Tjardas experience in the hospital gave me goosebumps. She was surrounded by women who showed her respect, compassion and love. Her experience with birth the second time around was similar, nothing by support from everyone she was surrounded by.On both occasions she stayed in her postpartum room as much as possible for those 40 days allowing her body to heal and deepen that connection with baby. Again she was supported by her family and community to enable this.A really beautiful episode, I said very little just listened intently. No doubt you will too!

She attended hypnobirthing with @brenda_communitymidwife and found it to be so beneficial, arming her with the knowledge to make decisions she was comfortable with. She had a back to back labour which was tough and she opted for an epidural which gave her the relief she was looking for allowing her to settle into birth after a really long and intense labour. She then chats to me about her breastfeeding journey and how vital support to help and encourage you throughout tough times. Loved chatting to Jessica and I'm looking forward to our coffee date which may be in a field at a distance but so be it. 22 May 2022 | EP109 - Aisling, One Pregnancy & Birth, Epidural, Vaginal Birth, Midwife Support (England) | 00:55:58
In this weeks episode I share my chat with Aisling (@mellow_mindfulness) who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Olivia. Within this episode you will hear such amazing examples of midwife care. One midwife in particular stood out, she ensured Aisling was cared for when she wasn’t receiving the attention she needed.Olivia’s birth was such a positive experience and as a someone who meditates Aisling definitely tapped into hypnobirthing tools to help her through labour. Something this amazing midwife did has stayed with me. She knew Aisling is close to her mother who lives in Ireland and couldn’t be present due to Covid. The midwife lifted up her mask momentarily, hugged Aisling and said “This is from your mother!” Goosebumps even writing this.

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Jill who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Charlotte. Jill really had to focus on tracking her ovulation, the ovulation sticks (as with many of you) weren’t helping her much so she focused on natural indicators too.She put a lot of time into preparation and stayed active throughout her pregnancy including teaching yoga. I think an important part of Jill’s story is where she chats about passing her estimated due date and just wanting to meet her baby. Although this is the case for all of us, some of us find those last few weeks incredibly hard. Getting to the stage where you wonder if you will ever meet your baby is a real thing, I felt it!!Of course, little Charlotte was born Jill finally got to meet her daughterEnjoy & thanks Jill ❤️ https://www.irelandsbirthstories.ieSupport the podcast - PatreonSupport the podcast - BuymeacoffeeThis week I’m supporting Petrina founder of @mamasboobiebox A breastfeeding gifts and products business. In this weeks episode I share my chat with Kathleen who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. After Kathleen underwent cancer treatment she feared her fertility would be impacted but thankfully she concieved her little boy quite quickly. An uneventful pregnancy took a drastic turn of events as she was diagnosed with Pre-eclampsia. Her little boy was born via Caesarean birth at just 30 weeks weighing under 2kg. Kathleen went on to conceive again and spent a lot of time researching the possibility of pre-eclampsia second time round. She decided the best decision for her and baby was to opt for a Caesarean birth as she noticed returning symptoms such as a severe headache in the very late stages of her pregnancy. She wanted her baby in her arms and she got just that, her little girl!A story many of our premie parents will relate to. Kathleen later mentioned the @irish_neonatal_health_alliance were a huge support to her as a mother to a premie baby. https://www.kiwico.com/panda - Code IREBIRTH to avail of 30% off your first order

Stephanie suffered from SPD from the 17/18 weeks mark and attended a physio to help her manage the pain. She is actually a physio by professional so I love that despite knowing all the tips & tricks to help alleviate her discomfort she still took the time to look after her body. She had a planned homebirth with the help of the HSE Community Midwives and the wonderful @midwife_aineassisted in bringing her little lady into the world. An episode which will be so relatable for those who have recently given birth.
