21 Feb 202492. Narrative Versus Numbers In Investing00:56:15

Everyone loves a good story. Investors are no different in this regard. Sadly, the great story isn't always the great investment, and it can be hard sometimes to tell when the narrative has begun to drift away from the underlying business results. In this week's episode, Jeff and Jason discuss this, along with other topics related to the differences in the art and the craft of investing.

In the second part of the show, we talk about one of Jason's favorite people, Jeff's dad. More specifically, the five stocks that Jeff's dad made Jeff buy, in a little portfolio we call Nick's Picks.

In this episode of Investing Unscripted, Jason and Jeff delve into the nuances of stock investing, discussing the merits of exploring numerous investment ideas versus deeply analyzing a select few. They emphasize the importance of leveraging personal expertise and networks to discover stock opportunities, while also cautioning against the pitfalls of relying solely on stock screeners. The conversation highlights the significance of due diligence in evaluating stock ideas and the need for a structured approach to building a portfolio. The episode concludes with a memorable metaphor comparing stock tips to sushi, underscoring the importance of trust in investment advice.

*A Bond Account is a self-directed brokerage account with Public Investing, member FINRA/SIPC. Deposits into this account are used to purchase 10 investment-grade and high-yield bonds. The [6.9%] yield is the average annualized yield to maturity (YTM) across all ten bonds in the Bond Account, before fees, as of [8/28/2024]. A bond’s yield is a function of its market price, which can fluctuate; therefore a bond’s YTM is “locked in” when the bond is purchased. Your yield at time of purchase may be different from the yield shown here. The “locked in” YTM is not guaranteed; you may receive less than the YTM of the bonds in the Bond Account if you sell any of the bonds before maturity, or if the issuer calls or defaults on the bond. Public Investing charges a markup on each bond trade. See our Fee Schedule at https://public.com/disclosures/fee-schedule.

Bond Accounts are not recommendations of individual bonds or default allocations. The bonds in the Bond Account have not been selected based on your needs or risk profile. You should evaluate each bond before investing in a Bond Account.  The bonds in your Bond Account will not be rebalanced and allocations will not be updated, except for Corporate Actions.

26 Aug 202367. Is Being A Lazy Stock Picker Better?01:00:41

Being an active investor is hard. The reality is, humans are wired to do something. It's hard to stand by while our portfolios are doing, well whatever, and not feel the need to act. Stocks going up? Sell to lock in gains. Or maybe buy more! It's going up, after all! Stocks falling? Sell to cut the losses. Or maybe buy more! It's going to go back up, after all! But none less than Warren Buffett has made the case for being a lazy investor. He once wrote, "Benign neglect, bordering on sloth, remains the hallmark of our investment process," after all. But is Buffett really being slothful? And is the lazy approach really the right way to go? Jason and Jeff hash it out in this episode.

In the second part of the show, we wade into companies and social issues. What's an investor to do if a company takes a stand on a social issue? What if it backfires? Is there a right way to approach it or think about it as an investor? Jeff and Jason firmly grab the third rail of investing and talk through this subject.

21 Oct 202375. Should Stock Investors Lower Their Expectations?01:03:12

Investors have profited wildly from stocks over the past 14 years. Since March 2009, the S&P 500 has returned an average of 15.1% total returns per year. That's a mind-blowing 50% better than the long-term historical average. As a result, do investors have wildly unrealistic expectations going forward? After all, interest rates have been persistently at record lows for much of that time, giving companies access to cheap capital to fund growth, buy back stocks, and acquire competitors. It's also resulted in large sums of institutional money moving into equities to offset the much lower yield available in fixed income.

In this week's show, Jeff and Jason talk through these implications, and most importantly, what individual investors can do to make sure they are prepared for a lower-return environment going forward.

2024 is here, and plenty of people are trying to jumpstart, re-start, or just plain start their investing journeys. We hope that Investing Unscripted can help you along your journey! In our usual anachronistic ways, this week's show is taking a very different approach, and we are answering the question, when should you stop investing? Specifically, when should you consider cutting back, or even completely stopping, investing new money, whether in your retirement accounts, taxable brokerage, kid's education accounts, or whatever? Jeff and Jason have a lot of fun with this wide-ranging topic, suggested to us by longtime listener and Friend of the Show, Colin. In the second part of this week's show, Jeff and Jason discuss how they each plan to invest in 2024, changes from how they put their money to work in 2023, and why.

17 Jun 202357. What If You Die?00:58:31

Death and taxes are inevitable, as the saying goes. But what if you died right now? What if some cosmic hand snapped its fingers, and you were gone? We often apply this "snap" test to companies to find the most important ones, but we can apply this same test to ourselves, too. Who would be impacted? What would they be left trying to figure out? Would they have enough money to make ends meet?

Would they even know how to access your bank accounts or retirement savings? What would they do?

In this episode, inspired by a young listener's recent health diagnosis, Jeff and Jason talk about this difficult subject, offering their insights and answers to one of the hardest questions we each need to answer. Because the only thing worse than dying young is leaving your loved ones without the resources to move forward with their lives.

In the second part of the show, we play "Signal or Noise" with crypto. The SEC is going hard after trading platforms, and Jeff and Jason debate the potential implications for trading platforms and crypto writ large. Whether you're interested in crypto or not, it's a useful thought exercise on disruption, fraud, and regulatory clarity.

02 Sep 202368. The Magnificenter 701:05:46

The "magnificent seven" stocks – the seven largest U.S. stocks by market cap – have had an incredible year. Even the worst-performing of the bunch (Microsoft) has gained 35% this year, more than double the ~15% returns of the S&P 500. Considering that these 7 companies make up more than one-quarter of the market cap of the S&P 500, it's no surprise it's been a good year for stocks. But Jeff and Jason think they can do even better. In this week's episode, they each pick alternatives to the "magnificent seven," in a little competition we are calling The Magnificenter Seven. We're even keeping score! Check out the link to the 2023 Smattering Portfolio Contest for more, and share your own picks. If you think you can do better, that is…

Because Jason talks SO much, this is the only top of this week's show. Looking for the monthly update to the 2023 Smattering Portfolio Contest? Since we pre-recorded this episode and will be away at month-end, tune back in next week for a slightly late review of the contest.

29 Apr 202350. Running Away From Fires00:53:53

In episode 45, Running Towards Fires, Jason and Jeff talked about finding opportunities to buy when the consensus was to sell. In this week's show, they discuss how so many investors are running the other way, paying a hefty premium for low-growth, "blue-chip" stocks that are likely to deliver underperforming returns going forward, looking for dividend stocks, and otherwise searching for safety in what Jason says is "the wrong way." Should you be buying growth stocks again? Holding cash and being patient? Jeff and Jason share their thoughts on this complicated topic.

After the break, we answer three listener-submitted questions about foreign taxes, selling stocks at nosebleed valuations only to buy back when they're cheaper, and evaluating different companies based on valuation.

08 May 2024103. Imposter or Investor?01:01:05
Warren Buffett once said, "Everyone has a plan until the stock market punches them in the mouth." Okay, Warren didn't say that, but the investing version of a Mike Tyson quote is still correct. Picking the best investments and having a plan is only part of investing success. And over time, we've come to learn that these things rarely account for the most important – and most flawed – part of investing: You. In this week's show, Jason and Jeff take a deeper look at the importance of goals and making the right investment decisions, and how critically important it is to build and maintain a framework that factors in your own psychology, and temperament, making it harder to make the easy mistakes, while also empowering you to make better decisions.  Companies mentioned: CRWD, ENPH, EPR, JNJ, NVDA, OM, SOFI, SWAV, TPIC, TSM, UPST ***************************************** Subscribe to our portfolio on Savvy Trader at: https://savvytrader.com/investingunscripted/investing-unscripted-portfolio?s=MjM0NDM6NTQ1OA== ***************************************** Email: investingunscripted@gmail.com Twitter: @InvestingPod Check out our YouTube channel for more content:  https://www.youtube.com/@InvestingUnscripted ****************************************** To get 15% off any paid plan at finchat.io, visit https://finchat.io/unscripted ****************************************** Investing Unscripted is brought to you by Public.com* *Options are not suitable for all investors and carry significant risk.  Option investors can rapidly lose the value of their investment in a short period of time and incur permanent loss by expiration date. *A Bond Account is a self-directed brokerage account with Public Investing, member FINRA/SIPC. Deposits into this account are used to purchase 10 investment-grade and high-yield bonds. As of 9/26/24, the average, annualized yield to worst (YTW) across the Bond Account is greater than 6%. A bond’s yield is a function of its market price, which can fluctuate; therefore, a bond’s YTW is not “locked in” until the bond is purchased, and your yield at time of purchase may be different from the yield shown here. The “locked in” YTW is not guaranteed; you may receive less than the YTW of the bonds in the Bond Account if you sell any of the bonds before maturity or if the issuer defaults on the bond. Public Investing charges a markup on each bond trade. See our Fee Schedule (https://public.com/disclosures/fee-schedule). Bond Accounts are not recommendations of individual bonds or default allocations. The bonds in the Bond Account have not been selected based on your needs or risk profile. 09 Sep 202369. What My Job Taught Me About Investing00:52:45

Investing is hard, and a lot of people go into it without any formal training. And as a result, lots of mistakes get made, particularly when it comes to investing in stocks. But that doesn't mean most of us don't come with some skills that cross the divide between day job and weekend investing warrior. In this week's show, Jason and Jeff share some of their own work experiences, how they've helped them be better investors, and in some cases, maybe didn't help (such as being a public school administrator, like Jeff).

In the second part of the show, we take a look back at the August (despite Jeff's best efforts to insist July happened again) results of the 2023 Smattering Portfolio Contest! One take that Jeff and Jason both share: By and large, we would happily take the results of this contest in our own portfolios. It's been a good eight months for our stocks.

In our last mailbag of 2023, Jeff and Jason field a select few questions from you, our loyal listeners, including a discussion on moats (metaphorical ones that defend the profits of our favorite companies), when it's time to join the market if you can't beat it, and a timely look at end-of-year tax moves in your portfolio.

In the second part of the show, we discuss how we are feeling about the market broadly after a nearly two-month screaming run higher. Jason asks Jeff, "What's your market vibes, bro?"

02 Dec 202381. Stocks, Venture Capital, and Why it Matters to You01:00:00

What is venture capital? What does it have to do with buying stocks? This week, Jason and Jeff are joined by Joe Magyer, founder of VC firm Seaplane Ventures. After nearly two decades investing in public stocks, Joe now focuses on finding and investing in early-stage companies before they IPO. In this episode, Joe helps explain how VC works, and breaks down the big trend of startups staying private for much longer, why that's happened, and how it potentially affects investors in stocks.

Are you a founder (or an accredited investor) looking to contact Joe? You can find him at https://www.seaplaneventures.com/, https://www.linkedin.com/in/joemagyer/, and https://twitter.com/Magyer.

25 Mar 202345. Running Toward Fires00:47:38

The U.S. is going through its first banking crisis – or potential crisis – in almost 15 years. And like prior panics, crises, and downturns, it seemingly came out of nowhere, with Silicon Valley Bank erupting in fire overnight, and the fire spreading to Signature Bank and threatening to send the whole neighborhood (or at least a notable cul-de-sac – of regional banks up in flames. We've seen this play out before. A crisis happens. Stocks crash. Investors either make or lose money, depending on whether they run toward the fire, or run away.

In this episode, Jeff and Jason describe their experiences during prior times of market panic, and how these can be both opportunities to profit, and potential threats to your wealth. It all depends on a few key factors.

In the second part of the show, Jason and Jeff introduce a new segment: I Did a Thing! This week, Jason drops a surprise stock sale he made on Jeff, and they talk about what changed.

25 Nov 202380. How Well Do You Know Your Stocks?00:54:41

There's little doubt that investors who understand what they own, and why, should have better investing success. But how much do you really have to know? In this week's show, Jeff and Jason talk about how much knowledge of the companies you own, the industries they operate in, and the companies they compete with, you should have. While there's definitely such a thing as too little knowledge, what about too much? We cover a lot of ground on this topic this week!

In the second part of the show, Jeff and Jason celebrate their favorite new holiday: Thanksfornothingmas! Gratitude is great, but sometimes it can be a little cathartic to express your disappointment, too. We share some of our biggest disappointments of the season to close out this week's show.

Fractional Bonds also carry additional risks including that they are only available on Public and cannot be transferred to other brokerages. Market downturns happen, and we get a full-on crash every decade or so. As much as we like to think of them as opportunities, thinking that way and acting that way are two different things. And the closer you get to a financial goal, the more at-risk you are of a big downturn upending your plans. In this week's show, Jeff and Jason discuss the difference between asset allocation and diversification, building a portfolio that's more resistant to crashes and individual company risk, and resilient for both the near- and long-term.

They say, process over outcome. When it comes to investing, that’s definitely true, and we believe a solid framework is the path to a successful investing process. In this week's show, we discuss two different topics. In the first part of the show, Jason and Jeff discuss their investing frameworks, what they focus on, and how their processes have evolved over time.

In the second part of the show, we discuss homeownership, and renting, and how each can result in very different investing and personal finance plans and needs. We also give our answers to the question often asked: is your home an investment?

24 Jun 202358. Travis Hoium on Asymmetric Investing01:01:56

To some degree, every stock investor is looking for asymmetric returns. While the market delivers, on average, around 10% in gains each year, stocks also provide the rare opportunity to earn substantial multiples on your initial investment. Travis Hoium has spent years looking for those winners, and now he's helping people find them. An engineer by training and longtime writer for The Motley Fool, Travis is also the founder of the Asymmetric Investing newsletter, where he provides access to research on stocks he thinks have the potential – and characteristics – to deliver asymmetric returns.

Recently, Travis sat down with Jason and Jeff to talk about his journey, some of the lessons he's learned along the way, his investing philosophy, and his approach to finding asymmetric opportunities. He also shares two ideas that he thinks are good examples of how these opportunities can often hide in plain sight. In the second part of the show, Jason and Jeff put Travis through the wringer in a lightning round.

14 Feb 202491. Chris Hill on Investing, Markets, and Podcasts00:52:52

Chances are, if you've listened to investing podcasts over the past 15 years, or like listening to audiobooks on finance and investing, you've heard Chris Hill's distinctive voice. As the daily host of Motley Fool Money and other podcasts from their creation in 2008 until May of 2023, and a career in financial communications going back to the late 1990's, Chris has seen a lot. Combine that with being the voice of Morgan House's two bestselling novels, The Psychology of Money and Same As Ever, and Chris is what investing sounds like to millions of people. In this week's show, Jeff and Jason catch up with Chris, discuss his background, experiences, and lessons from and a quarter-century of observing investors, markets, and companies. Chris also gives us a small preview of what he's working on next.
