10 Jul 2020Ep 421: Matej Zaro, Zaro Wines, Slovenia Travel and Wine special (10/10)00:36:25

If you know someone who would enjoy this episode please share the direct link: www.interpretingwine.com/421

We finish this Slovenia series with a visit to Zaro wines in the Istrian peninsula. Perhaps fittingly they are located in the far West of Slovenia, close to borders with Italy and Croatia. Even more fittingly the rain was coming down as we sheltered under an umbrella for Matej to describe the history, landscape and microclimate of his vineyard sites. This informs the house philosophy to grape growing and winemaking, and ultimately the style of the wine. From our spot in the vineyards we head to the cellar and taste a trio of barrel samples. Before heading to the Manzoli Wine Bar in the centre of Isola, where we taste the current vintages of the previously tasted barrel samples. And finish proceedings with a tasting of two reds. Listen right the way through for details of the Orange Wine Festival that the winery helps to arrange in Vienna.

Welcome to Day two Session one of the Interpreting Wine Hospitality Summit 2020. Today is all about restaurants and we start with a long overdue visit to Tredwells to speak with Chef Owner Chantelle Nicholson. We first hear her origin story and transition from studying law into various roles in hospitality. Looking at her up to date ideas for what a restaurant can be, which has developed during lockdown. We talk about the circular economy and the passion that Chantelle has for supporting local producers. Chantelle takes us inside decisions she made at the start of lockdown and discusses how the team kept on the same page and communicated throughout. She discusses how they reopened and thoughts on keeping staff engaged throughout. Chantelle shares the triple whammy her part of Central London is suffering and how this contrasts with London neighbourhoods. What people learned about food during lockdown and how their buying habits may have changed for good. We talk no-shows and how the industry might start to change perceptions. Before she looks ahead to the end of furlough and beyond.

28 Nov 2019Ep 349: Lawrence Francis, Podcasting Q&A, Wine2Wine 2019 Series (8 of 8)01:01:14

Questions: (asked by Monty Waldin)

  1. Podcasting started as a niche medium and is now increasingly becoming mainstream. Why is it growing in your view? How can podcasters leverage this interest, what is your strategy?
  2. Anyone with a voice and an internet connection can become a broadcaster. Is podcasting’s low technical barrier to entry a good or bad thing from a wine perspective?
  3. Wine is a still a confusing, frustrating, snobby minority sport for most everyday mortals? The BBC’s mantra is to educate, inform and entertain. Should podcasts share these exact same goals?
  4. In what ways can podcasts be useful for students facing wine tasting exams (Master Sommelier, WSET, Master of Wine…)?
  5. What potential revenue streams are there?
  6. Is generating a revenue stream (via advertising or sponsorship) integral to a successful podcast? Listeners are unlikely to fast forward a podcast if a short audio ad starts to run (by the time you have found the fast forward button the ad has finished) so the potential for a captive audience exists with this medium.
  7. How do you grow an audience for your podcast? (a question for Lawrence). Research in the UK in September 2018 by Ofcom suggested half of UK podcast listeners were under 35.
  8. Sustainability and climate change are dominating all news agendas, not just wine. How can audio play a role in making the wine industry greener, and more inclusive?
  9. How close away are we from Peak Podcast (a surfeit of players) and what might the implications be?
  10. Should wine podcasts be studio based, or should more be made on location?

We first hear from Milan describing how he fell in love with hospitality before describing the origins of Atelier and how it developed from a pop-up to its current permanent site in Brno. Arielle talks about her transition from working in hospitality in New York to moving to Brno and establishing Civil Wines. Milan takes us on a virtual tour of Atelier, changes over time and how it was received in the local and Expat communities. Before Arielle goes deeper into the reaction and Atelier’s place within the Expat scene. On the food side we talk about authenticity and how Atelier stays true to its place in Moravia while bringing in their influences. Milan then introduces us to the Cuvee Atlelier produced by local winery Plener. Arielle first looks ahead to the development of Civil Wines and wider promotion of Brno as a tourist destination. Milan talks about his focus going forward and how Atelier will keep developing.

Welcome to Day one Session two of the Interpreting Wine Hospitality Summit 2020. We continue with wine and pay a visit to Quality Wines Farringdon to meet Gus Gluck. Possibly my favourite place to drink wine in London, not least down to Gus’ warm welcome, wine selection and intimate atmosphere, he led innovation in response to COVID-19 and was the first person I saw using taster sizes for Instagram live tastings. Gus reflects on the days and weeks before lockdown, when the writing was increasingly on the wall about the severity of COVID. Before he brings us up to date and discusses how Quality Wines has adapted and continued to operate without losing its soul. He talks about the challenge of converting former retail customers back to eating in and paying the premium for service. Gus gives a high-level review of innovation in the sector during lockdown discussing the can-do attitude he saw and continues to see. The impacts of lock-down on mental health at all levels in the industry in the wake of those businesses who closed their doors for good this year. We discuss the idea of no-shows in post-COVID world and the unseen cost of rent. Before looking ahead for his new business GB Wine Shippers and his clients.

08 Mar 2023Ep 517: Sam Filler and Justin Jackson, New York Wine and Grape Foundation, New York Grower 2023 Series, 1/700:50:26

I’m Lawrence Francis, Host of Interpreting Wine, welcoming you to the New York Grower 2023 Special Series. specially commissioned by the New York Wine and Grape Foundation for your listening pleasure. Across these 7 episodes recorded in Feb and Mar 2023 we’ll be exploring the modern New York grape growing scene in the company of 6 producers. Including a Deep Dive into the New York Wine and Grape Foundations’ Sustainable Vineyard Certification. Absolutely reflecting the most up-to-date realities of grapegrowing in the region. Given the level of listener and wider wine trade interest in quality grapes as the basis for quality wines, a series I’m particularly excited to share and a real landmark for the channel.  Subscribe to be alerted when new series episodes go live.

We kick things off today in the company of Sam Filler and Justin Jackson of New York Wine and Grape Foundation. Firstly, Executive Director Sam Filler sets the scene, outlining the long-standing sustainability credentials that New York grape growers can proudly lay claim to. Music to my ears, given its focus on the growers and ultimately making their the local industry more equitable for them and therefore a more sustainable industry. Sam also sharing a personal example of the often unseen impacts of chemical interventions within the vineyard on biodiversity.
