In this episode…

Did you know that the very thing that most people wake up to in the morning could be killing them? It’s true! Cell phones, tablets, and other electronic devices emit harmful radiation that we don’t even think about. On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from Cary Subel and Alaey Kumar as they explain how SafeSleeve is providing affordable solutions for this silent killer. In their conversation with Jeremy, the guys open up about how they got the business started, what the product development process was like, challenges they’ve faced, plans for the future, and much more! Don’t miss a minute of this powerful and engaging episode featuring Cary and Aley from SafeSleeve!

If you found out that you were unknowingly exposing you and your loved ones to the constant risk of cancer, wouldn’t you do something about it? For too long the public has turned a blind eye to rumors and warnings about the dangerous use of electronic devices and the health hazards they can cause. Now, we have the latest news on this subject from the National Toxicology Program that determined the effects in rats and mice from exposure to radio-frequency (RF) radiation from cell phones. Researchers found increased rates of cancer in male rats exposed to cell phone radiation. Providing a viable solution, SafeSleeve developed an FCC accredited lab tested shielding technology that can block over 99% of RF and 92% of ELF radiation.

You really never know where inspiration and creativity will lead you. One minute you might be daydreaming or just mindlessly thinking of something one of your parents said and the next you could be starting a business around that idea. Does that sound crazy? It’s not! That is exactly what happened for Cary and Alaey when they came up with the idea for SafeSleeve. The guys had a friend who’s dad was a neurologist and would constantly remind them that they shouldn’t keep their electronic devices close to their body. With that idea knocking around in their head, they went to see if there were any solutions on the marketplace to address this very serious concern. When they couldn’t find any good solutions, they decided to take matters into their own hands. What can you learn from Cary and Alaey’s story?

Finding the right idea to build a business off of is one thing, turning that idea into a marketable product is a whole different process entirely. Cary and Alaey knew that they wanted to bring the public a solution to harmful radio-frequency radiation but they had no idea where to start. Setting out on the journey, the guys had to cast a wide net contacting supplier after supplier until they found the right one that they could trust. Once they connected with the right supplier, the guys were confident that their concept would resonate with the public.

When you build an organization from the ground up, in many ways it's like raising a child. Once that child is old enough to be away from its parents, you’ve got to find a responsible individual who you can trust them with. The same is true when it comes to a startup! Bringing on that first team member can be as nerve wrecking as finding the right babysitter. Thankfully, Cary and Alaey struck gold when they made their first hire and brought someone on who could take over the operations side of the business without missing a beat. What role will be your company’s next hire?

In this episode…

Hiring the right people can be a difficult task for any CEO. Many leaders hire from a place of urgency or desperation. Is there a better way? Peter Spenuzza has determined that taking their time and waiting for the right people to come along is a central piece of Rise Bar’s continued success. On this episode of Inspired Insider, Peter talks about the ingredients of success, what he LOVES about his company’s product and the difficult aspects of having quality team members. If you are looking for insight and helpful lessons in business, you’ve come to the right place!

Why is Rise Bar so successful? Peter Spenuzza is convinced that they are successful because they produce a high-quality product that is healthy and delicious AND because they hire the right people. Peter is quick to tell you that they were able to ride the consumer wave of an increased demand for transparency - their bars only have a handful of ingredients. They’ve also excelled in being patient and hiring the right people for each job opening. It hasn’t always been easy but this patient approach to hiring and the transparent approach to product development has paid large dividends in success for the company. To hear more insights from Peter, listen to this episode of Inspired Insider!

When you see your business or product take off into stratospheric success that usually will count as a “High point” for most entrepreneurs but for Peter Spenuzza, it’s different. Peter isn’t crazy, of course, he LOVES that his company’s product has taken off and is sold at retailers like Whole Foods. But what fires Peter up is getting texts or emails from friends or acquaintances who snap a picture just to let him know where they found his product and that they are HUGE fans of it. To this day, that gets Peter fired up more than the numbers and spreadsheets - they are making a difference in people’s lives and that is huge!

One of the most difficult aspects of hiring the right people for the job is watching them leave. You invest a lot of time, training, and resources in building up and equipping a talented individual and sometimes that person will move on to new opportunities. On this episode of Inspired Insider, business leader Peter Spenuzza talks about watching talented people move on as being one of the most difficult aspects of running a successful and thriving company. Peter is gracious and understands why people leave to pursue other opportunities but it still stings - you get attached to people! To hear more about Peter’s story with Rise Bar, make sure to listen to this episode.

Have you ever had to hit the reset button on something you’ve devoted your whole career to building up? Can you imagine how challenging that process would be? What would you do, press forward or walk away? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from podcast host and entrepreneur, Jordan Harbinger. In his conversation with Jeremy, Jordan opens up about rebuilding his podcast from scratch, how his wife is involved with the podcast, why it’s important to have the right team around you, how he leads with vulnerability, challenges he has faced along the way, and so much more! Don’t miss a minute of this powerful episode featuring Jordan!

When you face adversity in life or business, you really only have two choices, let it defeat you or learn from it and move forward. Have you had situations like this in your life? Where did your decision lead you? For Jordan Harbinger, as difficult as the choice was, he decided to push forward and learn from his disappointment. Jordan decided to not only return to broadcasting, but he wanted his show to be bigger and better than it ever was before. He set out to improve every single aspect of his production from audio quality to prep time. His audience noticed and the responses have been overwhelmingly positive. What can you learn from Jordan’s story of resilience and reinvention?

Do you have that right-hand person in your organization who you can trust with honest feedback? How do you know that you can really trust their opinion? Have you built that relationship over years of working together? Jordan Harbinger is thankful to have his wife, Jen on his team and providing valuable input that genuinely makes his podcast better. Hearing from Jordan about how they interact, you really get the sense that they enjoy a shared and specific vision of what they want to accomplish. While working with your spouse may not be ideal for everyone, when done well, they can really serve as a priceless asset.

It has been said that the best way to get from point A to point B is to realize how unacceptable life is at point A to be willing to make that change. Once you focus on this shift in thinking, then you can really start to go to work and strive toward your ultimate objective at point B. Have you locked in on point B in your life or are you still trying to figure out if you want to stay at point A? Jordan Harbinger is done with point A in his life and he is soaring toward point B in an extream “Hustle Mode.” He is determined to map things out and produce the very best podcast on the marketplace, and he is succeeding! What can you learn from Jordan’s relentless drive toward improvement?

When was the last time you heard of someone thriving without a plan in place to make it happen? Let’s face it, success and fame don’t happen by accident! More often than not, as Tony Robbins says, “Success leaves clues.” This saying absolutely rings true when looking at the life and career of Jordan Harbinger. Jordan was kind enough to open up about some of the daily habits he practices that help him to succeed. One of the habits that Jordan mentions is the simple practice of grabbing a contact in his phone who he hasn’t messaged in a while and he takes the time to reach out. Just that simple act has allowed Jordan to build and maintain a robust network of contacts and friends that have helped him to advance both personally and professionally.

From snack foods like chips to frozen treats like ice cream, if its an easy choice, it’s likely not a healthy choice. What if there was a way to turn that type of thinking around? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from innovator and entrepreneur, Kailey Donewald. Do you ever find yourself reaching for that one dish of comfort food only to find that you kind of hate yourself for eating it after you’ve finished? It’s past time that we had more healthy food options on the marketplace so we can enjoy snack foods and dessert without the guilt! Creating healthy alternatives was a huge reason behind the work of Kailey Donewald and her team at Sacred Serve. They wanted people like you to find a product that is good for you on store shelves without feeling like they were doing something terrible to their body. From coconut meat to raw dark chocolate, the Sacred Serve team is committed to making their products using the very best ingredients, check them out!

One of the most common aspects of life as a startup entrepreneur is dealing with round upon round of experimentation. Often using friends and family as test subjects, the innovator can quickly find themselves testing the patience of those closest to them. That is of course unless your product is gelato. While the testing phase wasn’t without its challenges, Kailey and her team were finally able to hammer out a solid recipe for their vegan gelato. Soon, Kailey was able to enjoy the fruits of her labor seeing her natural and guilt-free product on the shelves of stores all over the Chicago area.

When you create a solid product from scratch as a small business, a huge hurdle that you often face is getting your product into the hands of the average consumer. What hope do you have to make it big if you can’t compete with the big box names? The truth is, it takes a determined leader who is convinced that their product is worth the struggle to get it across the finish line and in a position to compete. Luckily for Sacred Serve, they had the likes of Kailey Donewald leading the way and doing everything she could to give her fledgling product a shot, and it worked! What can you learn from Kailey’s story?

It has been said that a leader is only as good as the team they’ve built around them. Have you found that to be true in your business career? Do you work with a competent and innovative team? Kailey Donewald knew that if she wanted to scale Sacred Serve from a small and nimble organization into a rolling and productive business, she’d need a top-notch team around her. It’s imperative that a leader knows their limitations for a business to succeed. Kailey knew her limitations and hired a team to work with her that addressed her weaknesses and played to her strengths. Learn from Kailey’s story and make sure that your team is on the right track!

What does it look like to scale homemade snack to become a health food hit? What lessons can business leaders take away from this kind of story? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from entrepreneur and innovator Abigail Wald. Abigail started The Yes Bar first, as a way to provide healthy snacks for her family. As the product gained a following among family members and friends, Abigail began to scale the product and the company was born. Listen to this episode as Abigail tells her story, shares lessons learned along the way, how she connected with her business partners, and so much more! Don’t miss this motivational and informative episode!

What would you do if your child’s diet was so sensitive and restrictive that you had to say no to almost everything on store shelves? It sounds like a nightmare for most parents but for Abigail Wald, this was a daily reality for her and her family. One day, out of frustration and desperation, Abigail turned to the cupboards at home and started to experiment. Out of that experimentation, she developed the first “Yes Bar.” Through trials and setbacks along the way, Abigail perfected the equation and was soon encouraged by family and friends to bring her creation to a wider market. On this episode of Inspired Insider, Abigail goes into detail about her journey and how her son’s health improved once they changed his diet and started to include delicious healthy foods like the Yes Bar to his diet. Learn more about Abigail's story on this episode!

Do you know what is in the food that you eat on a regular basis? No, not produce or basic products but things like bars, chips, and other packaged foods, what are their ingredients? For most consumers, this is not a question they typically consider, but shouldn’t we? Abigail Wald brought her product, The Yes Bar to a wider market not only for children with sensitive diets like her son but for people who deserve to know what is in the food they snack on day in and day out. This was the inspiration behind the multiple flavor options that Abigail and her team worked so hard to bring to consumers. She didn’t want the Yes Bar to only appeal to kids or a select few, she wanted to bring a diverse array of flavors that almost anyone could enjoy. Make sure to listen to this episode of Inspired Insider to hear more about the Yes Bar!

How can great ideas like The Yes Bar breakthrough and make it to the shelves of big-box retailers? The truth is, most people with great ideas won’t be able to what Abigail and her team have been able to do. The system is set up in a way that doesn’t encourage or welcome new and risky ideas. They want to play it safe and bet on the predictable results they’ve always received. Is there any hope for the little guy? Of course, there is! But the route of going directly to the consumer has its own difficulties and challenges. To hear how Abigail and her team are reaching consumers directly with their amazing product, listen to this episode of Inspired Insider! You don’t want to miss it!

When is the right time for small business leaders to reach out and begin to connect with outside business partners to take their company to the next level? That’s a difficult question to answer. Each business leader and situation is unique but the one thing they all have in common is that they long for exponential growth. On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from innovator and disruptor Abigail Wald. As Abigail’s company, The Yes Bar continued to grow and expand, she soon realized that the one thing holding the company back was her lack of business knowledge. It took a lot of humility for Abigail to admit that she couldn’t take her company to the next level she wanted it to reach. Fortunately, she was able to connect with high-quality business partners that shared her passion and excitement for their product. To hear how the process of finding the right business partners played out for Abigail, make sure to listen to this episode!

In this episode…

How badly do you want success? It's an important question to ask yourself when starting a company.  Jeremy Smith, co-founder of Spothero.com wanted his companies to succeed badly. He was willing to sleep on couches for two years, attend social functions just for the food, and ride his bike everywhere in order to save money so that he could make the company thrive. Jeremy doesn't see them as sacrifices, he sees them as opportunities.

In this great conversation with Dr. Jeremy Weisz, Jeremy Smith shares his journey as a co-founder of spothero and tells the difficulties, the adventures, any exciting milestones that passed as the company expanded across the nation. You'll learn lots of great insights from Jeremy's lessons learned.

Writing his own future.

The attitude Jeremy Smith brings to his company is the same attitude he has in all of life. He sees it as an adventure, something to be lived in the moment that shouldn't be too scripted. He's proven that in the adventures he's taken to live a kind of life that he wants to live. One of those adventures was a four month backpacking trip that started in Russia and ended in Australia, and he didn't plan any of it ahead of time. A one way ticket, and he was on his way. That attitude of courage, boldness, and adventure, is part of what makes him a successful entrepreneur.

Jeremy got bitten by the entrepreneurial bug when he was still an early teenager. He took on the role of a salesman, going door to door to support a local fundraiser and was very successful. He also knocked on neighborhood doors to get work shoveling driveways, and asked his customers to pay what they thought his service was worth. It's that kind of hustle that has made him successful all the way through the start-up phases of his new company.

Spothero.com is not your ordinary company. It integrates technology, a practical human need, and the resource of spare parking spaces in cities across the nation, to give people exactly what they need, when they need it. The challenges have been huge, but the rewards have been equally huge. This is one of those conversations that is so full of practical help that you'll want to listen to it again.

In this episode…

E business success is something Richard Baccus can tell you about because he’s experienced it from the ground up. His work to establish and grow the online presence and sales success of ABC Vacuum Warehouse is the kind of story e-commerce legends are made of. On this episode, I chat with Richard about the details of how he’s made it happen.

One of the things Richard Baccus highlights on this episode of Inspired Insider is that all business owners who want to create an e business version of what they do need to get started now. The opportunities to sell online are amazing and only getting better. The sooner you adapt to the new platforms and get started the more you’ll be ahead of your competition.

Richard Baccus knows what he’s talking about when it comes to building an e business. When he started working with his Dad the company had no online presence at all - and that was in the day when Yahoo ruled the search engine space. He not only built a website, he learned how to create an online store, market products effectively, and create revenue from the newly created online sales world.

Richard Baccus found that eBay was one of their most successful sales partners starting out but he didn’t stop there. The success of the ABC Vacuum Warehouse e business hinges on the fact that they are NOT only on one platform. At the time of this recording, ABC sells parts and vacuums on 19 different online sales platforms. You can hear more about how Richard has done it on this episode.

It’s a new day for ecommerce with companies like Walmart and Target seriously getting into the online sales arena. But the opportunities for the little guys are growing like never before. You can build an e business by selling  your products on multiple platforms as a 3rd party seller. And today’s Inspired Insider guest, Richard Baccus can tell you how it can be done.

You need to learn to recognize “Micro-movements” - the little steps you can take each day to inch closer to the goals you’ve set. In this episode…

What does it look like to target a niche market and build a robust ecommerce business around it? Is that type of strategy effective? How does social media engagement factor into the process? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from entrepreneur and innovator, Jason Miles. In his conversation with Jeremy, Jason opens up about how he started as an entrepreneur, why he chose to build a business in a niche market, how he learned to use platforms like Pinterest effectively, why they started the non-profit Sew Powerful, and much more. Don’t miss a minute of this fascinating conversation with Jason Miles!

When you think of big businesses do you think of a name like Walmart that sells a wide range of products or do you think of businesses with a focus on niche markets like Starbucks? While there are multiple ways to build a business, it seems that focusing on niche markets has recently grown in popularity, especially in the ecommerce industry. Jason and Cinnamon Miles built Pixie Faire with a focus on the doll clothing niche market. From humble beginnings, they built a thriving brand that encourages and equips this niche community. Make sure to check out the link to their website located in the resources section at the end of this post.

Behind every successful entrepreneur is a team that was built from scratch. Most startups don’t begin with a team, but they certainly need a team to scale the business and build out long term success. Businesses that start to build out a team from scratch are bound to make a few mistakes along the way, thankfully, Jason Miles was able to avoid any major challenges in this aspect of his business. They were able to bring on an incredibly talented designer as the first addition to their team at Pixie Faire. Have you seen the contrast between healthy and unhealthy team environments in your career?

Does your organization have a plan for social media engagement? Much of the new ecommerce marketplace is centered around building and expanding a social media presence. Think of social media as the new public square, wouldn’t it make sense to invest and develop an approach that takes full advantage of this dynamic? Jason Miles didn’t start out as a social media expert, but he learned along the way and developed an innovative method for helping other business leaders do the same. To learn more about Jason’s resources, books, and online courses, make sure to check out the link to his “Winning on Shopify” site located in the resources section at the end of this post.

Have you ever wondered what all of your success and striving is for? What is the endgame? Do you work hard to enjoy a comfortable life with your family? Are you convinced that your business is providing a valuable good to the marketplace? Or is there something larger that you are working for? Jason Miles found his larger purpose on a trip to Zambia where he met women trying to support 475 orphans in a poor community known as Ngombe. Sometimes it is even found in the struggles of loved ones. Joey’s wife has a twin brother who went through an incredibly difficult health issue with impossible odds. Despite being young and healthy, Joey’s brother-in-law was given very little chance to survive.

The weight of the situation affected Joey tremendously, causing him to question his beliefs and even overeat. Despite those impossible odds, he is now cancer-free. As Joey was so close to the situation, he saw how his brother-in-law dealt with the situation, and took inspiration from it. • [39:20] A low moment in business for Mark.

In this episode…

What does it take to test a product, produce it, and bring it to the marketplace? Is there a best approach that most business leaders use or is it all up to chance? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from business leader and innovator, Mark Aramli. In his conversation with Jeremy, Mark opens up about how he came up with the idea for the Bedjet, why he decided to appear on Shark Tank, what it took to validate the Bedjet, and much more. You don’t want to miss a minute of this fascinating episode featuring Mark’s story!

Where does an innovative idea like the Bedjet come from? From the complexity and the amazing technology involved, you’d think that the idea for a device like the Bedjet came from a technology firm. The truth is - the Bedjet was born out of Mark’s desire to tinker around with a device that would solve his personal dilemma of temperature control in his bed. After he landed on a prototype - Mark decided to get wider input by sending the device to his friends and family - they agreed, Bedjet was a hit!

Once he had the product figured out - Mark had to go to work getting the product exposure in the marketplace. Running a small startup - you can imagine that Mark’s brand awareness budget was almost $0. Thankfully, they were able to get a Bedjet into the hands of the brilliant and talented marketing agency - The Harmon Brothers. In just a few months - Mark had a fun, entertaining, and engaging video he could use to promote the Bedjet. You can view the video that helped put the Bedjet on the map the Bedjet website!

As a small startup - Mark took every opportunity he could to raise awareness of the Bedjet and connect with more people who would enjoy the product. The desire to improve the Bedjet’s visibility led Mark to several rounds of funding on Kickstarter. With the successful Kickstarter campaigns, the Bedjet got on the radar for the folks at Shark Tank. The funny thing is - Mark had never even seen an episode of Shark Tank before the show contacted him! Jumping at the chance to appear on Shark Tank - Mark packed his bags and attended the tapping - all to no avail. The Sharks were convinced that the Bedjet would bomb - thankfully - they were wrong.

Even though the Sharks didn’t believe in the Bedjet - Mark knew better. He was convinced that the Bedjet was the solution that many people all over the world needed to make sleep a more enjoyable experience. Today, the Bedjet is selling like never before. The Bedjet is listed on Amazon, but Mark has been pouring more resources in his direct to consumer efforts, and he’s seen it pay off! Mark’s story goes to show you that you don’t need the stars to align to bring a successful product to the marketplace - you just have to make something people want!

04 Mar 2021How to Become The Execution Power House You’ve Always Wanted to Be with Peter Shallard of Commit Action00:39:48

Peter Shallard is the Founder and CEO of Commit Action, a company that uses real science to help business owners achieve their goals faster, easier, and more often. He spent the last decade doing one-to-one therapy and consulting with some of the world's highest achievers in his other business where he is better known as "The Shrink for Entrepreneurs."

For years, he was dissatisfied with pseudoscience and the lies in the entrepreneur's growth world. From pseudoscientific life coaching, hype-driven "secrets" based info-marketing, to false/artificial epiphany and snake-oil personal development, Peter saw how the personal development movement was failing business owners.

This led to the founding of Commit Action as a way to help business owners predictably bridge the gap between personal development and business growth through evidence-based methodology.

In this episode…

It’s not uncommon for business owners and entrepreneurs to feel dissatisfied with their performance. Oftentimes, they feel that they fall short of their internal bar and this leaves them feeling frustrated. This then results in a struggle, a struggle that prevents them to become the execution powerhouse that they actually hope to be.

Contrary to what most people think, it’s not necessarily inner emotional blockages that lead this to happen. According to the “Shrink for Entrepreneurs”, Peter Shallard, entrepreneurs fail to satisfy their own standards because they are operating in a vacuum of isolation without a lifeline of accountability and community. So how can they reverse this so that they can optimize their strengths and become the incredible execution powerhouse that they are capable of being?

On this episode of the INspired INsider podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz talks with Commit Action Founder and CEO, Peter Shallard, about the colossal problem that entrepreneurs are facing and how he can help them solve it. They’ll be discussing why many entrepreneurs are underachieving, the importance of accountability, the value of having a healthy balance between delayed gratification and fun, and how to address the common excuses that people make that hinders productivity. Stay tuned.

The 11 unique spirit animals found in Good Zebra are inspired by street and tattoo art, the flavors include vanilla, lemon, and chai with peanut butter and chocolate not far behind. • [44:30] Erika talks about connecting with Peet’s Coffee.
  • [47:30] Considering how consumers shop in grocery stores.
  • [50:00] Where is Erika trying to locate her product?
  • [54:00] Erika talks about working with the Rolling Stones.
  • [58:00] How to connect with Erika and Good Zebra.

In this episode…

How does someone go from branding expert to entrepreneur? What caused this career shift? How has the experience as a branding expert applied to life as an entrepreneur? You’ll find out from business leader and innovator, Erika Szychowski on this episode of Inspired Insider! In her conversation with Jeremy, Erika opens up about her time in corporate America, what led her to branch out on her own to start Good Zebra, why she was drawn to the snack food industry, how she’s been able to get her product on grocery store shelves, and so much more! Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn from Erika’s fascinating story!

Have you ever had an idea that you were sure someone else must have capitalized on? What if that was an original idea that you should have followed up on? Sure it sounds crazy but how do you know if you don’t investigate? For Erika Szychowski, that idea was a propionate, healthy, and delicious animal cracker that she eventually created a business around. Erika’s story serves as a prime example of why risk and curiosity is the entrepreneur's best friend! What can you learn from Erika’s story? What great idea do you need to pursue so you can bring your genius to the marketplace?

Erika Szychowski became an entrepreneur reluctantly. After working tirelessly in corporate America for years, she decided to step back for a well-deserved break. As Erika describes it, she was more pushed to break out of the mold and chase the path to lead a startup by those around her than any emotional pull within herself. Four months later, Erika came back to this idea of starting something from scratch because every other option literally made her feel sick. Her story is actually more common than you may think among many entrepreneurs. One of the big takeaways from Erika’s story is how important it is to give yourself the time and space to investigate and then move toward what you know you need to do next.

Where did the idea for a healthy animal cracker come from? Why does the market need a protein packed and adult-oriented animal cracker? Believe it or now, Erika was ready to throw in the towel because her initial idea of a protein cookie faced numerous roadblocks and she felt like it was leading to a dead end. Then in a moment of clarity at 2 am, Erika went back to her drawing board and revisited the idea of a child’s animal cracker snack. From there she went to work crafting and marketing a fun nostalgic idea that would eventually become a protein-packed animal cracker snack for adults.

As if coming up with the idea and going through the creation process of a protein-packed animal cracker wasn't hard enough, Erika Szychowski had to go to work convincing grocery stores why they should give her product a chance. Too often, these grocery stores wanted to put her product with snack foods when she wanted to see it marketed alongside energy bars and other healthy snacks she was competing against. Erika is still fighting the good fight to help us change the way we shop, in the meantime she is working hard to get her product in the best position as possible to succeed.

As one of 6 kids growing up on a farm, John learned early that he had to work for whatever he had. His parents taught him a strong work ethic, which has served him well as he built his business and wrote a successful book. As a child, John envisioned being a doctor because he wanted to work with his head and not his hands. He discusses how that all shifted when he discovered sales and found himself truly enjoying the process of connecting with clients. His first selling gig? Knives. From working with businesses, John bridged the gap into gifting and would soon be known as the best in the business. John goes on to discuss some of the biggest clients he’s ever worked with, including the Chicago Cubs, and how he wowed them with the first gift he was hired to create. He also shares some of the top mistakes people make in gifting, including the top mistake - making the gift about you, instead of the recipient. John discusses the most outrageous gift he’s ever gifted and why it made a huge impression. In closing, the discuss John’s book, Giftology, and the highs and lows of his journey.

24 Dec 2015[Top Author Series] How to Create Your Breakthrough Idea with Dorie Clark, Author of “Stand Out”00:57:21

Dorie Clark is a top strategy consultant who has worked with clients including Google,Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, and many more.

She teaches for Duke University at the Business School, and has lectured at Harvard business school, Stanford, MIT and many more.

She is the author of "Reinventing You" and her latest book "Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It” (Portfolio/Penguin, 2015)

On this episode…

Dorie’s new book, “Stand Out” is about building your personal brand in a way that gets you the attention and focus you need in order to move your projects forward. She’s become an expert at it, especially since she’s done that very thing for her own brand. In this conversation she shares a few of the ways she went about doing that, from her first efforts at getting her writing published on big name blogs, to submitting book proposals to publishers, to leveraging her books once they were published to build her email list into the tens of thousands. Dorie unloads a lot of stuff for us, so be sure you take the time to listen.

How Dorie built her brand from scratch.

When Dorie Clark needed to start building an audience she was very strategic about it. Her belief was that blogging on already established, reputable sites made more sense than trying to build her own blog from square 1. That’s what she did, and when she found out what mattered to the publishers of those sites, she did her best to maximize that so she was seen as a huge success. Find out the details of her little hack on this episode.

She’s a successfully published author now, but Dorie Clark has received many, many rejections to her book proposals in the past. If you’re an author, you know that feeling. On this episode Dorie talks about what that means to be rejected by a publisher and gives some tips on how you need to think about it so that you can keep submitting proposals in the face of rejection. If you can’t learn that lesson, you’ll quit before your book has a chance.

Maximizing her books to skyrocket her email subscriptions.

In her latest book, “Stand Out,” Dorie Clark created many self evaluation questions that she included at the end of each chapter. Those questions made a wonderful resource to offer on her website as her “offer” to increase her email subscriber list… and it’s working like crazy. She tells exactly how she did it, step by step on this episode so be sure you listen to get all the details.

Coming up with your own unique “breakthrough” idea.

When you’re trying to come up with your “breakthrough” idea, it doesn’t take lots of time as much as it takes mental space. You’ve got to be able to clear out the “head room” to think deeply and get to the root of what you’re about. If you can figure out how to do that, you can make serious headway toward quantifying what it is you have to offer. On this episode Dorie Clark unpacks that idea and offers a free resource to help you get it done.

Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll get on this show:
