14 Feb 2023Ep. 165: Cupid's Last Playlist01:18:51

This is a public booty announcement: the Valentine’s Day mood enrichment and seductive vibes generator known as the “mixed tape” is in serious danger of becoming a lost art. Cupid’s quiver of cassettes and CDs has been replaced with Alexa, Siri, and Spotify’s artificial algorithm-generated playlists which could render your romantic evening a bit limp. Join us as we educate you on why the music for your special someone this Valentine’s Day must be carefully curated. You better put this on if you want to get it on!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? On most shows, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This episode is part of our educational track of episodes provided to you by 2 certified Auditory Horndogologists. Our hope is that we enhance your romantic festivities on this very special holiday.

23 Feb 2024Ep. 218: The Inbetweeners - When 80s Met 90s pt.201:41:46

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover all 3 categories and even some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the hard rockin’ 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and some bands simply got caught in the middle. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from and enjoy some music from The Inbetweeners!

Songs this week include:

  1. Naked Sun – “Psycho-Activate” from Naked Sun (1991)
  2. Funhouse – “Y.R.S.” from Generation Generator (1990)
  3. No Walls – “Naive” from No Wall (1992)
  4. Animal Bag – “Missing Out” from Animal Bag (1992)
  5. Red Sea – “Blood” from Blood (1994)
  6. The Hatters – “Sacrifice” from The Madcap Adventures Of The Avocado Overlord (1994)
  7. Loudhouse – “Faith Farm” from For Crying Out Loud (1991)

Join us for a very special episode with 2 of our favorite guests, as well as 2 of Atlanta’s greatest drummers: Rob Hammersmith (Skid Row) and Kent Aberle (Blackberry Smoke). Poor Robert must suffer while 3 drummers in one room chat about the greatest of all time and the brightest of the unsung heroes of the rock n’ punk n’ metal drumming community. We get some awesome stories from the road as these 2 are always touring the world with Skid Row and Blackberry Smoke. You don’t want to miss this one! Plus, drummer jokes by Bakko from Cobras & Fire!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. 07 Feb 2025Ep. 268: Grave Mistake: TRIUMPH Shoulda Been Huge-er-er!!! – pt.201:51:59

This week we continue our journey to the Great White North! This is the triumphant finale of our celebration of an amazing power trio from Toronto that has been largely forgotten in the pantheon of rock n’ roll: TRIUMPH! From classic hard rock & metal to proggy AOR, this is a band that rarely gets the praise they deserve!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content has mentioned before as a band he would love to dive into deeper. While not the most obscure band we’ve ever covered (they have multiple platinum and gold albums in the US and Canada), they have been largely forgotten as the rock giants they once were. We think they should be remembered as titans or rock and thus: Huge-er-er!!! Eh?

Songs this week include:

  1. Triumph - “Time Goes By” from Thunder Seven (1984)
  2. Triumph - “When The Lights Go Down” from Stages (1985)
  3. Triumph - “Mind Games” from Stages (1985)

  5. Triumph - “Carry On The Flame” from Surveillance (1987)
  6. Triumph - “Edge Of Excess” from Edge Of Excess (1992)
  7. Triumph - “I Live For The Weekend” from Live At Sweden Rock Festival (2008)

26 May 2023Ep. 179: Retro Relapse Regurgitated Revival Revision01:27:09

This week we are discussing what the interweb calls the New Wave Of Classic Rock! There have been bands doing the retro-rock thing for years, but this phenomenon seems to be gaining momentum lately and we decided to focus on new-ish bands that have released albums in the last year or so. Indeed, rock n’ roll is not dead and is in the very capable hands of these killer new classics!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. The younger generation is picking up guitars and playing that classic blues-inspired hard rock again! This retro rock thing is not quite as new as the interweb is making it out to be, but who cares? It’s a breath of freshly regurgitated air!Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.

Songs this week include:

  1. Rival Sons - “Guillotine” from DARKFIGHTER (2023)
  2. Classless Act - “This Is For You (w/ Justin Hawkins)” from Welcome To The Show (2022)

26 Aug 2022Ep. 140: Degrees Of Separation... RIPPER01:48:56

This week is our 8th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we pay homage to the rock n’ roll rags to riches story that is the metal god-like voice that is Tim “Ripper” Owens. He inspired a major motion picture, not to mention gave opportunities to countless other singers from tribute bands to perhaps be considered as the replacement for the real deals. This guy has some of the most sought-after pipes of the last 25 years. All hear our warning; never turn your back on The Ripper!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. Ripper - “Embattled” from Embattled - Single (2022)
  2. Winter’s Bane - “Heart Of A Killer” from Heart Of A Killer (1993)

18 Oct 2024Ep. 252: In The Shadow Of… TYPE O NEGATIVE01:37:38

This week: the 2nd in a newer series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats or copybats, but more so about artists that have similar vibes to a band who has become synonymous with Gothtober; the one and only TYPE O NEGATIVE! Join us as we discover other bands who were influenced and inspired by TYPE O’s gothic metal greatness.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It’s been said that there is no originality left in rock n’ roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. A Pale Horse Named Death – “Shallow Grave” from Lay My Soul To Waste (2013)
  2. Frown – “Last Summer Days” from Lunar Brightshine And Fiery Splendour (2003)

09 Dec 2022Ep. 155: Metal Thrashing Mad01:44:08

Meet us in the pit this week for a hella good time! We’re getting our aggression by revisiting the starting point of Kevin’s music fandom. The thrash, crossover, and speed metal movement of the 80s spawned his love of all things rock n’ punk n’ metal. We will not be covering the Big 4 of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax; but if you love them, then you will love this bunch. How will Robert react to one of our heaviest episodes of all time??? Will he be metal thrashing mad or just plain mad?!?!

What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we explore all things mosh-worthy! This is real metal people. All hail the speed and ferocity of Thrash! Our hope is that we turn you on to something new and heavy.

This week we continue both Gothtober and our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This will be an in-depth exploration of a perennial Halloween favorite for us: the frightfully amazing HELLOWEEN! This German band has had a long-lasting impact on Kevin, but not so much on Robert. Will Kevin be able to win him over to agree that HELLOWEEN is deserving of a much bigger spotlight amongst heavy metal icons and titans like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden??? Tune in and find out... If you dare! Mwahahaha!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show already in episodes 50, 99, and 107, and a cover of one of their songs in episode 43. A German band that helped establish the metal genre known as, “Power Metal”. Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. 29 Nov 2024Ep. 258: Threading The Needle - 90s Alternative Metal01:19:10

This week: a sister-cast episode to a series we have called the Inbetweeners where we on the bands straddling the 80s and 90s in rock n' punk n' metal. This is more specific to metal in the 90s after feeling the impact of the overwhelming shifting of sounds during the decade. Metal became a dirty word by the mid-90s as grunge and alternative took over the rock world, but a new movement in the metal genre blended all of these influences with the heavy. Thus, we give you - 90s Alternative Metal!

What’s this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover mostly bands that have been forgotten including some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the heavy metal 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and metal bands that began during this time put it all in an industrial-strength metal blender. Hope ya dig!

Songs this week include:

  1. Quicksand – “Thorn In My Side” from Manic Compression (1995)
  2. Fragile Porcelain Mice – “Brown Nickel” from Frostbiddin (1996)
  3. Therapy? – “Nasuea” from Nurse (1992)
  4. Corrosion Of Conformity – “Clean My Wounds” from Deliverance (1994)
  5. Prong – “Unconditional” from Prove You Wrong (1991)
  6. Fight – “I Am Alive” from A Small Deadly Space (1995)
  7. Life Of Agony – “This Time” from River Runs Red (1993)

21 Apr 2023Ep. 174: Old In The 90's - What Were They Thinking Again?01:24:44

Transmission 1991: Danger! Danger! The Dinosaurs are at severe risk of extinction unless they can quickly evolve into a down-tuned, depressed, dirgy, dirty, flannel-wearing anti-dinosaur! Living fossils that once rocked stadiums with shredding guitars, spandex, lipstick, and hair spray have purchased wah-wah pedals and must sing about something other than their love pumps! Listen with extreme caution, as they will surely collapse under the weight of their folly. You have been warned... Whatever…

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. These are songs and albums by artists you know that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happens to the dinosaurs when they attempt to follow trends…

31 Jul 2020Ep. 37: Grave Mistake: MANIC STREET PREACHERS Shoulda Been Huge!!!01:15:05

This episode is obviously rooted firmly in our Should Have Been category. The Manics have been walking the line between punk, cock rock, romantic melodicism and glam since the late 1980s. They are rock n’ roll heroes in Wales, having sold over 10 million albums worldwide. Thirteen albums in and they are still going strong! We couldn’t get through their entire discography in this episode, so expect volume 2 soon!

Songs this week include:

  1. “Motown Junk” from Single (1991)
  2. “Love’s Sweet Exile” from Generation Terrorists (1992)
  3. “Yourself” from Gold Against The Soul (1993)

04 Feb 2022Ep. 112: Grave Mistake: THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA Shoulda Been Huge!!!01:16:20

Welcome to another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This time we should re-title it, “Should Be Huge!!!” as this is an active and current band featuring members of other much heavier sounding bands. We are talking this week about the side project of the Swedish metal bands Soilwork and Arch Enemy: the amazingly awesome retro-sounding band THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA! Imagine if Foreigner, Toto, and Survivor had a metal love child and you get this awesome band. If you don’t know this band, or if you are only vaguely familiar with them; do yourself a favor and check this out. You may want to put on your workout gear and set up your phone to record a video because you’re going to want to create an awesome montage while listening to this!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that has mastered the ability to recreate those fist pumpingly perfect sounds of AOR / Arena Rock gold that originally existed in the late 70s / early 80s. Unfortunately, their brilliance and innovation in reviving this genre have not been recognized on this side of the Atlantic as much as it deserves. We think they SHOULD BE HUGER… and we are ready to fly that banner proudly!

Songs this week include:

  1. The Night Flight Orchestra – “Stella Ain’t No Dove” from Internal Affairs (2012)
  2. The Night Flight Orchestra - “Living For The Nighttime” from Skyline Whispers (2015)
  3. The Night Flight Orchestra - “Gemini” from Amber Galactic (2017)
  4. The Night Flight Orchestra - “The Last Of The Independent Romantics” from Sometimes The World Ain’t Enough (2018)
  5. The Night Flight Orchestra - “Divinyls” from Aeromantic (2020)
  6. The Night Flight Orchestra - “Midnight Marvelous” from Aeromantic II (2021)
  7. The Night Flight Orchestra“Domino” from Amber Galactic (2017)

22 Nov 2024Ep. 257: Grave Mistake: BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION Should Be Huge!!! featuring Mad Brad Rusthoven01:54:58

This week we respectfully welcome back to the show Slamfest Podcast host: Mad Brad Rusthoven. He has called us out on a grave mistake of not having played Black Country Communion on any of our recent New Wave Of Classic Rock episodes. Therefore, we give you “Grave Mistakes: BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION Shoulda Been Huge”… scratch that: Should BE Huge!!! Celebrate this amazing supergroup with us. Apologies for a little hiss and background noise in the episode (our crack staff must have been smoking crack again).

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we mentioned before on the show and played an offshoot band from them. They contain some household names in classic blues and rock and have a hell of a pedigree, but unfortunately, their brilliance has yet to be recognized to the degree that it truly deserves. This is the bastard child of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin for the love of Lemmy! We think they SHOULD BE HUGE…

Songs this week include:

  1. Black Country Communion - “Beggarman” from Black Country Communion (2010)
  2. Black Country Communion - “The Outsider” from (2011)
  3. Black Country Communion - “The Great Divide” from Live Over Europe (2012)
  4. Black Country Communion - “Midnight Sun” from Afterglow (2012)
  5. Black Country Communion - “Sway” from BCCIV (2017)
  6. Black Country Communion - “Stay Free” from(2024)

02 Jun 2023Ep. 180: Excavation: New Wave Of "Not So" British Heavy Metal - Part III01:20:50

This week the lads hop across the pond to do some more excavation of denim and leather… Well, sort of… While it’s sort of about the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, we instead visit France, USA, Canada, Japan, and Germany! The NWOBM movement was filled with passionate bands from Great Britain that were poised to take over the world. Most of the A-listers like: Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard went on to major success, but bands from around the globe were inspired and aspired to carry the torch of heavy metal in the early 80s. Hopefully, we can help spread the word and sounds for those that didn’t quite make it to the same level.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the LOST. From the music, to the fashion, to the attitude… 40-years ago these bands started an underground movement that would change hard rock and metal globally forever.

Songs this week include:

  1. Riot – “Hard Lovin’ Man” from Restless Breed (1982)
  2. Trust – “In The Name Of The Race” from Repression (1980)
  3. Loudness – “Loudness” from The Birthday Eve (1981)
  4. Manilla Road – “Far Side Of The Sun” from Metal (1982)
  5. Exciter – “Heavy Metal Maniac” from Heavy Metal Maniac (1983)
  6. Grave Digger – “Heavy Metal Breakdown” from Heavy Metal Breakdown (1984)
  7. Cirith Ungol – “Frost And Fire” from Frost And Fire (1981)

05 May 2023Ep. 176: Splinters & Stitches - Supergroups & Offshoots pt.201:33:48

This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn’t break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long.

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands who contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.

Songs this week include:

  1. Chequered Past – “A World Gone Wild” from Chequered Past (1984)
  2. California Breed – “Midnight Oil” from California Breed (2014)
  3. BackBeat Band – “Rock & Roll Music” from BackBeat – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1994)
  4. Brides Of Destruction – “Brace Yourself” from Brides Of Destruction (2004)
  5. Robin Trower - “Life On Earth” from BLT (1981)
  6. Down ‘N’ Outz – “By Tonight” from My ReGeneration (2010)

14 May 2021Ep. 77: Grave Mistake: MARILLION Shoulda Been Huge!!! 10-1901:15:58

This episode is obviously rooted firmly in our Should Have Been category. Marillion is a band that has amassed an amazing catalog of successful yet cult band-ish albums that are nerdy cool, with deep lyrics, but with a keen sense of humor. Kevin refers to them as the English Rush, but this is an amazing group all on their own. We think they SHOULDA BEEN HUGE!!! We hope you’ve been enjoying this journey with us as we’ve covered this band’s material from the 80s, 90s, and now the 20-teens!

Songs this week include:

  1. “Gaza” from Sounds That Can’t Be Made (2012)
  2. “The New Kings IV: Why Nothing Is Ever True” from F.E.A.R. - Fuck Everyone And Run (2016)
  3. “Incommunicado” from Singles Night (2018)

Due to the abundance of amazing new releases in the world of rock n’ punk n’ metal, we will forego our annual Christmas episode for a 2-parter Shallow Graves 2024! 23 Aug 2024Ep. 244: In The Shadow Of... MUSE01:19:53

This week: a new series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. We kick off this series with a band near and dear to both humble hosts. A band whose live show made us both immediate fans back in 2004; the amazing British power trio MUSE! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by MUSE’s complex yet accessible modern rock.

As always, we hope we turn you on to something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. Tigercub – “Swoon” from The Perfume Of Decay (2023)
  2. Anchor Lane – “Stutter” from Call This A Reality? (2022)
  3. VAST – “I Woke Up LA” from Turquoise (2004)
  4. The Warning – “More” from Keep Me Fed (2024)
  5. Dear Sherlock – “XPTO” from Object Of Ridicule (2023)
  6. K Será – “Carry” from Collisions & Near Misses (2013)

05 Apr 2024Ep. 224: Covers From Beyond!!! - The Dylan Factor01:36:47

This week is all about bands playing a famous singer–songwriter’s songs better than he ever did… This is a particular phenomenon known as, “The Dylan Factor”. In this episode, we showcase songs by old Bobby Dylan that sound better than the versions he recorded. Some will say that’s not a hard feat, but none can deny the powerful songwriting and auspicious lyrics of Dylan.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. If you’ve never listened to Dylan because of his polarizing voice and delivery, try these awesome rock n’ punk n’ metal versions instead!

Songs this week include:

  1. Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush – “All Along The Watchtower” from Tales Of The Unexpected (1979)
  2. Me First & The Gimme Gimmes – “The Times They Are A-Changin’” from Rake It In: The Greatest Hits (2017)
  3. Vains Of Jenna – “Blowin’ In The Wind” from Reverse Tripped (2011)
  4. Mick Ronson – “Like A Rolling Stone” from Heaven And Hull (1994)
  5. Ministry – “Lay Lady Lay” from Filth Pig (1995)
  6. Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Subterranean Homesick Blues” from The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987)
  7. The Dead Weather – “New Pony” from Horehound (2009)

24 Sep 2021Ep. 94: Shredding The Tomb - How Low Can You Go?01:33:32

In this week’s episode, we bow down as low as we can get to the almighty bass guitar heroes! The heart of rock n’ roll is the rhythm and this week we explore some of the most amazing low-frequency providers. How do they make such wonderful noise with metal wires on a piece of wood? This subject holds a very special place in Kevin’s heart, as he tries very hard to play the same instrument that we are praising this week.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old Bass Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever slappa da bass!

14 Feb 2025Ep. 269: R.I.P. John Sykes01:47:58

It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week’s episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin’s a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes.

New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. Your pure musicality and amazing songs will live forever in our hearts!

Songs this week include:

  1. Blue Murder – “We All Fall Down” from Nothin’ But Trouble (1993)
  2. Streetfighter – “She’s No Angel” from Lightnin’ To The Nations: NWOBHM 25th Anniversary Collection (2005)
  3. Tygers Of Pan Tang – “Blackjack” from Spellbound (1981)
  4. John Sykes – “Pride And Joy” from Crossfire: A Salute To Stevie Ray (1996)
  5. Derek Sherinian – “God Of War” from Mythology (2004)
  6. Thin Lizzy – “Cowboy Song” from One Night Only (2000)
  7. John Sykes – “Cautionary Warning” from 20th Century (1997)
  8. Blue Murder – “Still Of The Night” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)
  9. Blue Murder – “Jelly Roll” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)

14 Jan 2022Ep. 109: Old Soles - A Shoegaze Revival01:38:03

This week your rock n’ roll vampires suck on the neck of a long-forgotten genre that emerged in the late 80s – early 90s. A genre that exploited obscured vocals, guitar distortion, effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume: SHOEGAZE. Primarily based in the UK, these bands used the artistry of guitar innovation to paint some wonderfully layered sonic canvases! If you have a preconceived notion that you don’t like this stuff, we ask that you give this episode a shot as you might be surprised how much it rocks…

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we focus on the FORGOTTEN. If you were into this music when it came out back in the early 90s, chances are that you haven’t revisited it in a while. Come along on this ride with us and spend the next 90-min staring at your feet! We hope we re-introduce some of you to these bands and turn others on to something completely new!

Songs this week include:

  1. Swervedriver – “Blowin’ Cool” from Mezcal Head (1993)
  2. Ride – “Here And Now” from Nowhere (1990)

22 Apr 2022Ep. 123: Grave Mistake: WARRIOR SOUL Shoulda Been Huge!!! Pt.2! Part01:03:22

This week we continue our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is Part 2 of our exploration and exploitation of the sleazy Detroit Punk meets NY Metal sounds of the amazing WARRIOR SOUL! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge during the first decade of their career. This time we unearth the second half of their rock n’ roll road trip with the whiskey-soaked spewing of tunes from 2009 through their recent release in 2022.

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show already in episodes 33, 83 and 119. An American alternative metal band, formed by lead singer, songwriter, producer, and painter: Kory Clarke. Unfortunately, their brilliance and innovation have never been recognized to the degree that it deserves. We think they SHOULD BE HUGE… and we are ready to fly that banner proudly!

Songs this week include:

  1. Warrior Soul – “Don’t Believe” from Destroy The War Machine (2009)
  2. Warrior Soul – “Planetary Revolution” from Stiff Middle Finger (2012)
  3. Warrior Soul – “Back On The Lash” from Back On The Lash (2017)
  4. Warrior Soul – “War Ride Children” from Rock N’ Roll Disease (2019)
  5. Warrior Soul – “D.O.A.” from Cocaine & Other Good Stuff (2020)
  6. Warrior Soul – “Out On Bail” from Out On Bail (2022)

30 Sep 2022Ep. 145: Acid Rock n' Proto Metal From The Crypt Vol. IV01:19:24

Welcome back my friends to Ep. 145 of the InObscuria Podcast! This week our rock n’ roll grave robbers share a tab and fall deep into the 1970s Acid Rock n’ Proto Metal crypt to unearth some obscure bands that helped influence and mold what would become known as Heavy Metal. This is the fourth volume of our deep dive into the trippy and groovy beginnings of the heavy stuff!

What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This particular episode is planted firmly in the: LOST category, as all of these recordings, occurred between 1970 – 1972. However, some of these bands didn’t actually see the release of this material until the 90s and the 2000s! As always, our hope is that we turn you on to something new in a genre and decade that you may have thought you already knew everything there was to know.

  1. Dust - “Suicide” from Hard Attack (1972)
  2. Blackwater Park - “Mental Block” from Dirt Box (1972)

05 Aug 2022Ep. 137: Genres From The Netherworld ...continued01:30:11

This week we leave you pondering: these genres that can’t possibly be real; right? Humans love to organize and put things in categories. Music is no different. When someone asks about a band or song they ask you what it sounds like. You can either give them a generic term (rock, punk, metal), refer to another band or artist, or provide them with an oddly specific categorization like psychedelic operatic speed ska… Or something like that!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode deals more with the Lost… Genres and sub-genres that are truly unique and oddly specific. We hope we turn you on to something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. Dirty Rig – “Just A Star” from Rock Did It (2006)
  2. Raging Slab – “The Shield” from Assmaster (1987)

29 Apr 2022Ep. 124: Under The Grunge Part 301:20:55

This week we strap on our old Doc Martins trudge through the muck and grime of the springtime in the US Pacific Northwest. Yep, time for our annual spring GRUNGE episode! We discuss the bands just outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts remember this time fondly, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all rock n’ roll avenues in the US. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. What do you think?

This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don’t think you’ll be totally surprised. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Kevin’s wheelhouse, and we find out the impact this had on Robert’s musical path. We discuss the origins of the movement and have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Come jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks and some flannel.

Songs this week include:

  1. Kerbdog – “Cleaver” from Kerbdog (1994)
  2. Hammerbox – “Hole” from Numb (1993)
  3. Pond – “Tree” from Pond (1993)
  4. Brad – “Raise Love” from Shame (1993)
  5. The Gits – “Another Shot Of Whiskey” from Frenching The Bully (1992)
  6. Mudhoney – “Living Wreck” from Piece Of Cake (1992)
  7. 7 Year Bitch – “M.I.A.” from Viva Zapata! (1994)

12 May 2023Ep. 177: Cruise With The Kräken01:38:30

Kevin just got off a boat! Listen to his tales of the Kraken and other aquatic beasts encountered on his Monsters Of Rock Cruise 2023 experience! Did he finally see Tesla after 37 years of missing them live? Did he witness a Stryper vs. Burning Witches battle of good and evil? Did he mistakenly sit on Angry Anderson? Did he really have 8 podcasters in an interior room huddled around a single mic for 2-hours? Have a listen to find out.

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. 21 Jan 2022Ep. 110: Old In The 90's - What Were They Thinking?01:38:20

30 Oct 2020Ep. 50 Chilling, Thrilling Sounds Of Rock n' Punk n' Metal01:49:43

What is it we do here at InObscuria? In the beginning, good always overpowered the evils of all man's sins... But in time the nations grew weak, and our cities fell to slums while evil stood strong. In the dust of hell, lurked the blackest of hates; for he whom, they feared awaited them... Now many many lifetimes later lay destroyed beaten down and only the corpses of rebels, ashes of dreams, and bloodstained streets remain... It has been written, "Those who have the youth, have the future". So, come now children of the beast; be strong and shout at the devil!

Have a listen and find out for yourself! Thanks so much to Anthony for sharing his time and stories with us.

08 Apr 2022Ep. 121: R.I.P. Taylor Hawkins01:18:29

Sometimes life happens… and sometimes death happens. Everyone in the rock world was shocked to hear of Taylor Hawkins's untimely passing on March 25, 2022. We didn’t know the man, but certainly thought a lot of him as a phenomenal musician who really was the driving force behind the Foo Fighters as well as modern rock n’ roll in general. From videos and documentaries, he seemed like a really cool guy and sweet dude. This week we pay tribute to the smilin’ heavy hitter and a hell of a singer, the only way we know how, by not playing a single note from the Foo Fighters.

New to InObscuria? It’s all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we will focus on Taylor’s solo material, guest appearances, and side projects. If there is one positive thing to come from this sadness, it would be that all of his great music gets the exposure it deserves.

Songs this week include:

  1. Dave Grohl & Taylor Hawkins – “2112 Overture” from RUSH, Rock Hall Induction Ceremony (2013)
  2. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Shapes Of Things” from Get The Money (2019)
  3. Brian May – “Cyborg” from Another World (1998)
  4. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Louise” from Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders(2006)
  5. Coheed & Cambria – “No World For Tomorrow” from Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow(2007)
  6. Taylor Hawkins – “Southern Belles” from Kota (2016)
  7. The Birds Of Satan – “Wait Til Tomorrow” from The Birds Of Satan (2014)
  8. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Don’t Have To Speak” from Red Light Fever(2010)

29 Sep 2023Ep. 197: ERIC MARTIN from Mr. Big - Songs From The Road01:37:53

This week is another star-studded episode of the InObscuria Podcast where we get songs and stories from the road. We had the opportunity to chat with the one and only Eric Martin from Mr. Big! He is a ball of pure energy and an amazing storyteller. We even get a Madonna story out of him that he’s never shared before! Come discover more about Mr. Big and their final tour, The Eric Martin Band, soundtracks, duets, covers, and more!

Wondering what this show is all about? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and place them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Kevin and Robert were both excited to have the opportunity to chat with Eric about the amazingly talented Mr. Big. We weren’t sure what we were in for when Eric sat down, and what we got was a hilarious and engaged guest that just happens to be huge in Japan (not to mention the awesome pipes in a band of some of the most talented players on the planet)!

25 Feb 2022Ep. 115: Unsigned Unearthed II with Kent Aberle01:18:11

This week we exhume the unmarked graves of the opening bands! They may not have been signed to a major or gained internationally distributed success, but they were all rock stars to those lucky enough to hear and see them! Anyone who’s ever been in a band and played local/regional shows knows that some of the best live acts and musicians (and friends) are met through sharing bills with other acts. These bands all have a common connection to your hosts and guest host: Kent Aberle and their band from the early aughts, Big Jack Pneumatic; through shows and opening, slots shared. We hope we turn you on to some great music that you may have otherwise never had a chance to hear!

New to InObscuria? Every week your two hosts crawl down to the crypts to exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. These are artists that are all amazing, but lost to most of the world. If you were there, you knew! If you dig it… go dig it up and buy it! Support these artists and keep your devil horns high in the air!

Songs this week include:

  1. The Force – “Fight For Your Life” from The Force (2003)
  2. JâD – “Lose Your Mind” from Lose Your Mind (2001)
  3. Slangbanger – “Upper Room” from Slangbanger Attacks! (2001)
  4. Moments From Impact – “Tortured” from Arrival (2003)
  5. Eleven Days – “Can’t Do This” from In A Year (2002)
  6. Transmission – “Trust In You” from Atlantis Music Festival 2004 (2004)
  7. The Swear – “OCD” from The Swear (2005)

16 Jun 2023Ep. 182: Pulling The Plug... More Acoustic Rock n' Punk n' Metal01:23:57

Electric artists have been playing acoustically since the beginning of recorded music. Usually, the slower ballads and the prettier mellow songs by rock artists were accompanied by acoustic guitars. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine their songs with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the FORGOTTEN. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.

Songs this week include:

  1. Classless Act – “All That We Are” from Welcome To The Acoustic Show - EP (2022)
  2. Minus The Bear – “Knights” from Acoustics (2008)
  3. The Pretty Reckless – “Only Love Can Save Me Now” from Other Worlds (2022)
  4. Backyard Babies – “Th1rt3en Or Nothing” from Silver & Gold (2019)
  5. Flyleaf – “Fully Alive” from Flyleaf (2005)
  6. Machine Head – “Darkness Within” from Unto The Locust (2011)
  7. Sway – “Stood” from Kawfee Talk (1998)
