22 Feb 2021Julie Simpson on Heart Health for American Heart Month00:10:10
Julie Simpson, an Independent Nurse Practitioner with MedExpress joins us to discuss heart health.

The month of February, which is recognized as American Heart Month, provides an opportunity to reinforce awareness of heart health and encourage Americans to take steps to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease through the adoption of healthier behaviors and lifestyles – especially during a pandemic.

And now, with COVID-19, people with certain heart conditions must be even more vigilant about practicing a healthy lifestyle and taking care of their heart by eating healthy and exercising to try to protect it from harm. The virus attacks the respiratory system which can weaken the lungs making the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body. This added stress can be harmful for people with heart disease.

Heart disease is the number one killer of both American men and women, according to the CDC. In addition, other cardiovascular conditions, such as high blood pressure or hypertension, are far too common. In fact, 1 of 2 adults in the United States suffers from high blood pressure, which when uncontrolled can have serious health consequences. The American Heart Association states that some individuals experience few or no symptoms before having a heart attack or stroke. Periodic cardiac screening tests and blood pressure checks can detect issues before symptoms develop, which can help to prevent major health issues down the road.

01 Feb 2020The Starfish Initiative - Mentoring Economically Disadvantaged Scholars00:30:34
Jennifer McCloud (SVP & Chief Advancement Officer) and Jessica Ledesma (Match Specialist) of the Starfish Initiative join Chris Spangle to discuss their work connecting economically disadvantaged youth with mentors that will help scholars develop in the area of college readiness/Access, career exploration, and character. Visit their website at https://www.starfishinitiative.org/.

About The Starfish Initiative

Starfish Initiative is a college access and readiness program serving economically disadvantaged high school students in Marion County, Indiana.

We believe that mentoring is the key to improving the educational attainment and future of today’s youth. To that end, we match every student in the Starfish program with a college-educated, volunteer adult mentor whose job is to help walk their student into college. Thanks to the guidance of their mentors, 100 percent of the Starfish Scholars who completed the four-year program have graduated from high school and 98% have been accepted by colleges or universities across Indiana — and beyond.

Starfish was founded in 2003 by a group of local businessmen, concerned that many of the academically promising but economically disadvantaged students in Indianapolis were not getting the preparation for post-secondary education they needed to be the future leaders of the community. They founded Starfish Initiative — the name taken from the famous “Starfish Story” — to help economically disadvantaged students. Currently, Starfish serves approximately 425 students in 45 public, private, charter and magnet high schools.

02 Apr 2020Jason Fishburn, Founder and Artistic Director of Matthew's Voices00:18:40
Jason Fishburn of Matthew's Voices shares how a choir of those experiencing homelessness changes lives in Indianapolis. Please visit their website at https://www.matthewsvoices.org/.

About Matthew's Voices

Matthew’s Voices was formed in July 2016 by Jason Fishburn-Grooten.

The name is inspired by the Gospel of St. Matthew 25: 42 - 45 (New International Version). It reads:

For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

Matthew’s Voices offers access to, and addresses the need for the arts in populations in our city that often go untouched, unloved, and underserved.

Children’s Bureau, Inc. is a private nonprofit that has served children and families since 1851 and we’re here because many families need help to overcome the challenges that sometimes lead to unhealthy behaviors and threaten a child’s well-being.

We offer an array of human services to Indiana children and families. Guided by our vision of a healthy family for every child, highly-trained case managers identify and address issues that tear families apart. They do so in different ways:

Prevent – Empower families with professional support and community resources to eliminate issues that lead to entry into the child welfare system.
Intervene – Work with families who find themselves in the “system” to accomplish the required goals to keep their children.
Protect – Recruit and strengthen foster and adoptive homes.
Support – Mentor older youth transitioning from foster care to independent living.

19 Jan 2021Chelsea Haring-Cozzi, Executive Director of Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention00:31:32
Chelsea Haring-Cozzi, Executive Director of Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention joins us to discuss the complexity of helping those who experience homelessness. Chris Spangle asks her about encampments on the circle, who falls into homelessness, and what organizations network together to solve the issue.
“CHIP” is the homeless coalition for the City of Indianapolis. CHIP collaborates with and supports dozens of local shelters and service providers in the City to create a community response that makes homelessness rare, short-lived, and recoverable. CHIP’s support comes in a variety of ways:
·      Securing funding for housing and services
·      Conducting important research that is used by all local homeless service providers who want to make sure their programs and housing solutions are fitting the needs in the community.
·      Advocating for policy change at the local, state and national levels for policies that support solutions to homelessness
·      Providing a variety of programs and training opportunities to improve the quality and effectiveness of the homeless system of care. For example, the Street Reach program provides financial assistance to people who are experiencing homelessness by helping them overcome barriers to permanent housing like paying a security deposit to rent an apartment or paying a utility bill. Since 2017, more than 700 individuals have either moved into permanent housing or made significant steps toward doing so with the help of Street Reach.

20 Mar 2023Discover the Power of a Good Story: How Baseball Great Carl Erskine's Story is Changing Lives00:42:33

Ted Green is a director, producer, and writer who fell in love with the art of storytelling through film and has made several documentaries, many of them about sports, but also focusing on people and events that celebrate the triumph of the human spirit. His newest film, "The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story," is about Carl Erskine, a baseball player who played a seminal role in two of the great human-rights movements of the past century, first as a teammate and close friend of Jackie Robinson, then as a pioneer in the fight for people with special needs.

Carl Erskine and his wife Betty gave birth to their son Jimmy and discovered he had Down syndrome. Instead of institutionalizing him, they found themselves at the forefront of another fight for the recognition of the marginalized. Erskine went on to play a pivotal role in the development of the Special Olympics.

Ted Green also talks about the Erskine Personal Impact Curriculum, which is designed to teach themes of inclusion, diversity, and acceptance using the stories of Carl and other individuals featured in the film. The curriculum has been distributed to schools in Indiana and beyond, with more than 70,000 books distributed so far. The goal is to inspire the next generation to positively impact the world.

16 Oct 2023What Happens When Crime Overtakes Your Neighborhood? Joe Garrison Explains How He Fought Back00:30:12

For years on this program, we've said that the best way to make change in our area isn't through government action or even through starting a business... It is through a voluntary organization like a nonprofit. After a friend was killed in his neighborhood, Joe Garrison and a few other neighbors formed the North Shadeland Alliance to find ways to quell crime. In the process, they also built community, aided hungry neighbors, and built political power to get the attention of once-inattentive city officials. It was far easier than expected, and this story will greatly inspire listeners.

If you've been a longtime listener to this show, you know there are several things that we've emphasized over the years like the importance of friendship, healthy masculinity, and growing civil society within our local communities. We're 2.5 million strong—more than 1.7 million girls and 750,000 adults who believe in the power of every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ to change the world. Our extraordinary journey began more than 100 years ago with the original G.I.R.L., Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low. On March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, she organized the very first Girl Scout troop, and every year since, we’ve honored her vision and legacy, building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. We’re the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. And with programs from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success.
