05 Sep 202330. Can I ever find peace with food?00:25:28

On this episode of In The Circle, I have the privilege of talking to Janet about her recovery journey and relationship with food. She inquires—Is there such a thing as food sobriety? What does that look like and how do I get myself back on track and feeling good in the right state of mind after a binge?

We delve into her experiences with Overeaters Anonymous and her challenges with sugar and overeating. Our discussion centers on the idea of "food sobriety," exploring body listening, detoxification, understanding what nourishment is, and personal needs.

This topic is relevant to every person on the path of discovery. The ultimate goal here is freedom and removing negative emotions tied to food. We need to shift from fear-based decisions to those based on love. We need to explore, we need to pay attention, and we need to examine what works for us and what doesn’t. We must become the scientists of our own lives and experiences so that we find the freedom we are seeking.

Want to find out more about the Food Reset program with Recovery 2.0? Visit https://r20.com/foodreset and discover how to eat for your own health, strength, vitality and life-force.

Tommy discusses:

  • Whether or not strict rules around our food choices do more harm than good
  • Why we need to become the “scientists” of our own lives
  • What is food sobriety?
  • Why rigidity and fear-based decisions won’t benefit us in the long run
  • The importance of understanding one's relationship with food
  • How The Food Reset Program can teach you about healthier eating habits, nutrient density, and long-term vitality

19 Sep 202332. Can I Rise Above Eating Disorders and Body Dysmorphia Brought On By Sexual Abuse?00:27:35

On this episode of In The Circle, I address a deep and personal question from Annesa—Can I recover from a lifelong struggle with food and body dysmorphia resulting from sexual abuse? This inquiry sheds light on the intricate relationship between trauma, self-view, and the longing for healing in a society where many women undergo sexual assault.

For us to discover true healing, we need to confront and question our deep-seated identities and beliefs and reconnect with our emotional and spiritual essence. Practicing techniques like Kundalini Yoga and mindfulness can play a huge part in helping us achieve our ultimate goal of peace and freedom.

We need to strive daily to discover our truths, discard detrimental self-beliefs, and embrace self-love and acceptance, especially when confronted with societal challenges and personal traumas. Not only does this guide us to experience true healing and recovery, but it also extends a beacon of hope to those on a similar healing journey.

Want to find out more about the Food Reset program with Recovery 2.0? Visit https://r20.com/foodreset and discover how to eat for your own health, strength, vitality, and life-force.

Tommy discusses:

  • The importance of discovering one's true self beyond trauma and stories
  • Why recovery is about realizing the divinity within and coming to the truth of who you are
  • How trauma keeps you in a story that distances you from your true self
  • The multiple benefits of practicing yoga and mindfulness
  • How to create an identity filled with love, compassion, and presence.

06 Aug 202478. Is It Possible To Fully Heal From Sexual Trauma?00:33:47

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Donna, who asks such a brave, honest, and raw question: Is It Possible To Fully Heal From Sexual Trauma?

Can the trauma of childhood sexual abuse be overcome? The unfortunate reality is that sexual and physical abuse are very present in our world. Donna’s inquiry gives us an opportunity to explore healing from these deep, formative wounds.

I believe that healing is always possible. It requires a combination of ingredients, a certain alchemy, and a willingness to sow the seeds of forgiveness and compassion for oneself and others.  Frankly, it is incredibly difficult, but absolutely attainable, especially for someone who asks a question such as this.

Tommy discusses

  • Letting go of trauma and abuse
  • Are unconscious beliefs holding you back from healing?
  • Does time heal all wounds?
  • Can we change for the better?
  • Embracing and accepting your wounds

On this episode of In the Circle, we explore the delve into the self-doubt that often obscures our inherent worth and divine nature. At our core, we are all beings of radiant light and awareness, yet external influences can cloud this realization, leading us to seek validation from the outside world.

But hope is not lost; ancient teachings offer potent tools to help still the mind and reignite our foundational brilliance. By channeling our focus inward, we can rise above these distractions, unveiling clarity and reconnecting with our profound purpose.

15 Oct 202488. How Can I Break Free From Negative Thinking?00:34:48

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we welcome Stuart, who is celebrating one year of sobriety from long-term cannabis use. Stuart's success stands as a beacon of hope for those struggling to let go of cannabis, showing that recovery and thriving are possible.

In this episode, he asks a question many of us can relate to: how can I break free from negative thinking patterns?

How can we shift from negative thinking to a more realistic and positive outlook? The recovery journey can sometimes feel overwhelming, and it is not uncommon to occasionally feel stuck in old thinking and behavior patterns.

By cultivating self-awareness and challenging those limiting beliefs, we can gradually move from a mindset of negativity to one that embraces possibility.

It takes effort and intention, but every step forward opens the door to new perspectives and greater mental clarity.

There's always a way to break free from the cycle of negativity, and with the right tools and support, you can reshape your mindset toward a more empowering and realistic outlook.

Tommy Discusses:

  • How to let go of your negative thoughts
  • Why self-awareness can feel overwhelming in early recovery
  • Shifting your thought process in real-time
  • Why missteps along the way are actually opportunities

11 Apr 202310. How Do I Avoid New Addictive Behaviors in Early Recovery?00:26:24

Today on In The Circle, Anne, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community, brings a powerful and widely relevant inquiry about addiction as it relates to anyone on the planet. She asks… How do I avoid new addictions in early recovery?

Many of us remember the classic arcade game: Whack-A-Mole. You move to quickly strike one down, only for another two, three, four to pop up in its place. Anne, being in the beginning stages of her recovery journey, worries that once she strikes down her most glaring addiction issue, that others may move to take its place in her life.

In today’s conversation, we accept that… Yes, other addictions exist and can be a tempting escape back into past behaviors that were harmful. But we also accept that, in overcoming one, we develop the tools to identify and avoid others.

It’s this ever-growing toolbox of lessons and learnings which we then wield in our lives as more connected, more present, and more loving individuals.

Tommy discusses:

  • Defining behavioral addiction
  • Identifying the addiction frequency
  • Reviewing the Big 6 addictions
  • Avoiding addiction patterns
  • And using them to set yourself free
  • Letting go of the unnecessary

11 Dec 202496. How Can I Make Peace with ‘Good Enough’ vs. Perfectionism?00:34:44

In this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re exploring the powerful topic of perfectionism. We’re joined by Kevin, who brings a thought-provoking question to the circle: How can I make peace with ‘good enough’ versus perfectionism?

Perfectionism, often rooted in disconnection and insecurity, can lead to a life of stress and unfulfilled expectations.

This episode examines the fine line between striving for our best and losing balance. How does perfectionism fuel procrastination? And how can we show up fully in life without constantly pressuring ourselves to do more or be better? These are vital questions that many of us face in recovery and life.

Join us as we unpack the role of perfectionism, its impact on our well-being, and how to find freedom from its grip. There’s so much to learn about letting go of unattainable standards and embracing the beauty of “good enough.”

Tommy Discusses:

  • When is ‘good enough’, good enough?
  • Does perfectionism lead to procrastination?
  • Breaking the perfectionism trance
  • Setting intentions for the best possible outcome

12 Sep 202331. Moderation versus Zero Tolerance in Food Recovery00:39:24

On this episode of In The Circle, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ruth, who bravely inquires about her path to recovery from food addiction. Ruth asks: Am I doing a disservice to those in early and long-term recovery when I talk about the foods that I have learned to eat in moderation?

While we never do a disservice to others by sharing our truths, it is important to remember that everyone is at different stages of their recovery journey, Everyone's journey is unique, and while sharing experiences is invaluable, it must be done with the listener's well-being in mind.

Listening to Ruth recount her battles with emotional eating, overindulgence, and codependency really underscored the importance of finding a balanced relationship with food because, at the end of the day, the choices we make about what we consume can shape our emotions, thoughts, and actions.

Want to find out more about the Food Reset program with Recovery 2.0? Visit https://r20.com/foodreset and discover how to eat for your own health, strength, vitality and life force.

Tommy discusses:

  • Why recovery is not “static”, but an evolutionary process
  • How food impacts every aspect of our lives
  • Why we might crave certain foods at certain times
  • How you can transition from an extreme control of food to a more balanced, moderate relationship with our Food Reset program
  • Why individuals require varied approaches to food and diet depending on their stage of recovery
  • Why sharing our truths with others should be done with respect

11 Jul 202322. How Can I Avoid the Trap of Workaholism and Overachieving?00:25:23

Today In The Circle, we are sitting with Kathryn who has an inquiry about workaholism and the addiction to more. Kathryn asks… How can I avoid the trap of workaholism and overachieving?

In this episode, we take a very sobering look at the idea of contentment and how we might actually find it in our lives. This is an important exploration because it asks us to go much deeper than the surface understanding of addiction and recovery.

What is the goal? What are we shooting for? What's the point?

We will never find out if we live life according to if/then thinking. This is the phenomena of looking to circumstances to arrange themselves in such a way that we can then be content. Living this way creates a dangerous reliance and unlikely effort to make the outside world meet our needs.

This is a profound inquiry that leads to a deeper understanding of addiction and what beliefs stand in the way of a great life. Let’s jump in and discuss.

Tommy discusses:

• Lessons from Tommy’s personal journey

• The if/then mentality doesn’t work

• Why having more money doesn’t equate to fulfillment

• What parts of our lives suffer when we engage in workaholism

• When will enough be enough?

• Finding the true path to peace and contentment

16 Jul 202475. How Will My Recovery Journey Impact My Children?00:31:46

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Tracy, who inquires: Will my recovery journey positively impact my children? This is such a powerful inquiry that I know will have relevance for us all.

Part of this exploration will lead us to understand that there is no such thing as a perfect parent. There is no such thing as parenting without doing some harm. We all have negative ingrained behaviors we see in ourselves that inevitably get passed to our children.

Many of us struggle with the idea that we've done something unconsciously or consciously, which will affect the outcome of our children's life in some negative way.

This is an inquiry about our healing journey as individuals and how we can relieve ourselves of guilt, process through shame, and come out to a much better place. This is relevant for everyone whether you have children or not

Tommy discusses

  • The misconceptions about sobriety
  • What is the root cause of addiction?
  • Embrace self-love and forgiveness
  • Personal growth is the greatest gift you can give
  • Parenting is an imperfect practice

15 Aug 202327. Where Do Psychedelics Fit in Recovery?00:41:04

On this episode of In The Circle, we're diving into an intriguing discussion about the integration of psychedelic therapies with holistic healing in recovery. Aaron’s inquiry holds great significance, as many people seek answers about the role of psychedelics in the healing process. However, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to this complex issue.

It's not a matter of simply categorizing psychedelics as good or bad. Rather, we need to delve into our own personal truths and understand when and if psychedelic therapy is suitable for us. It's crucial to grasp the potential benefits and risks and, most importantly, to ensure that any transformative insights gained through such experiences are effectively integrated into our lives.

I believe in the potential for transformation, happiness, and peace without relying on substances. My view is that integration of such peak experiences matters more than the experiences themselves. The search for these experiences can lead to neglecting the importance of mastering the day-to-day aspects of life where true growth and healing occur.

Tommy discusses:

  • Why we need to delve into our own personal truths when considering psychedelic therapies
  • The dangers of seeking constant peak experiences
  • What factors to consider when deciding whether to explore psychedelic therapies
  • Reasons to explore the benefits of Yoga, Meditation, and breathwork
  • The value of living from the inside out and aligning the outside with your inner needs
  • The potential benefits and risks of various psychedelic therapies (psilocybin, ketamine, ayahuasca)

18 Apr 202311. How Do I Overcome The Pressure Of Time And Access The Present Moment?00:34:20

What a blessing it is, once again, to sit in circle with you all today. In this episode, we field an interesting inquiry from Emily, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community. Emily shares that her drive and ambition are getting in the way of her experiencing the fullness of life.

On the one hand, we all strive to be better, to have success and better relationships. This inquiry asks us to locate the fine line between too much and too little effort. Can we create space for acceptance and gratitude in the present moment and also pursue our goals and ambitions? How do we balance these seemingly conflicting needs?

We also look at the very perplexing concept of linear time and how we can resolve resentments from the past so they don’t color our enjoyment of the here and now.

Tommy discusses:

  • Holding space for drive, ambition, and gratitude
  • Resolving our attachment to the past
  • Connecting to consciousness through meditation
  • How the linear concept of time warps our perspective
  • The importance of structure and open time in your schedule

14 Feb 20232. Can I Be Free From Addiction Once and for All?00:35:34

In the circle, today, we hear from Recovery 2.0 member, Luis, who asks… Are you ever free from addiction?

His question takes us down an interesting path. We must dissect the perspective of people struggling with addiction, and those struggling in recovery. This inquiry challenges the oft-heard phrase: “once an addict, always an addict.”

In this episode we unpack what Tommy Rosen refers to as The Big 6 (main categories of addiction) and the 4 Aggravations (more insidious mental addictions) providing a more hopeful context for healing.

We also uncover powerful truths… That you'll be healed from addiction when you no longer seek to be healed from it, when you're no longer looking for a cure; and that a real medicine makes itself obsolete.

Thank you for joining us today. I sincerely hope you’re able to benefit from this valuable conversation, and all of our upcoming conversations on the podcast, to aid in your own growth and healing journey.

Tommy discusses:
  • Are you ever really "cured" from addiction?
  • Dispelling the adage "once an addict, always an addict"
  • If you could use again with no side effects and no one knowing, would you?
  • The 6 main categories of addiction
  • The 4 aggravations (mental addictions)
  • Why looking for a cure is the wrong approach
  • If you’re “cured” can you partake in drugs and alcohol without overdoing it?
  • After healing from addiction, "you still have to bow to something"

25 Apr 202312. How Can I Heal Trauma and Truly Let Go?00:24:31

Today on In The Circle, the much-maligned “T” word, trauma, enters the room for a conscious study on healing our hearts and minds. Ken, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community, asks… How can I heal trauma and truly let go?

In this episode, we explore the process of setting ourselves free, particularly from resentments relating to our parents – and I share a few very personal examples from my own life.

This is one of those inquiries that is relevant for everyone with a heartbeat. Naturally, we desire to find greater joy in life. And to do so, we must find greater presence. In order to become more present, we must release the past.

Tommy discusses:

  • Returning memories of childhood traumas
  • Conscious parenting and learning from experiences
  • Being cursed by your parents
  • How healing changes shape for all of us
  • Reframing trauma as an opportunity for grace

22 Aug 202328. Are inclusive, effective & accessible recovery options even available?00:30:54

On this week's episode of In The Circle, Brian G raises a crucial and thought-provoking question—Are there inclusive, effective, and accessible addiction recovery options available in the United States of America today?

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. It allows us to open up a discussion about the challenges and conflicts in the recovery world and how we can best navigate forward. Our conversation also highlights the conflicts of interest within the American healthcare and treatment industries, particularly regarding profit-driven motivations that can hinder genuine recovery efforts.

Ultimately, I truly believe that it is the collective power of individuals coming together that will tell the story moving forward. We do not wait for anyone to come and help us. The teachers and the teachings are available to us here and now. It's our job to drop in, to turn on, and to really attune ourselves to this new frequency of healing.

Tommy discusses:

  • The conflicts of interest within the healthcare, insurance, and pharmaceutical industries
  • Why we need to provide quality treatment to those who can't afford it
  • The power of individuals coming together to reshape the conversation on addiction recovery
  • The power of yoga, meditation, breathwork, and a healthy lifestyle
  • How solutions exist if we change our perspectives and address structural issues
  • Why individuals should take responsibility for their own recovery journey

02 Jan 202447. Can I Ever Forgive Myself? Healing After Hurting the Ones I Love00:38:17

In this episode of In the Circle, we delve into the sensitive and deeply personal journey of Peter, a person in recovery who has experienced the profound loss of connection with his children. This estrangement is not a result of death but due to his children distancing themselves over the years.

This inquiry is crucial as it touches on loss, grief, self-forgiveness, and the intricate process of making amends. The journey of reconciling with the past, understanding the dynamics of forgiveness, and learning to navigate life after loss are pivotal discussions that hold immense value for many in the recovery journey.

I’d like to thank Peter for his vulnerability and readiness to share his story with us today In The Circle. His willingness to be open is a beacon for others navigating similar paths.

Tommy discusses

  • The path to reconciliation and freedom
  • Why the 12 steps are still relevant
  • The importance of self-love and forgiveness
  • How addiction affects everything around you
  • The process of making amends

10 Oct 202335. Can We Resolve Trauma And Be Free?00:40:49

On this episode of In the Circle, we revisit the profound concept of mind-body connection as we delve into Patty’s inquiry—How can we resolve trauma and be free? This topic heavily emphasizes the psychosomatic connection, elucidating that traumas, regardless of their nature or intensity, can mentally and physically affect individuals.

Awareness will become a vital tool in understanding the traumas we carry within and how to release them. The world of Kriya practices, encompassing breathwork, yoga, and meditation, stand as powerful tools to aid individuals in releasing trapped energy, facilitating a wholesome healing process, and giving us space to still the mind.

Our body inherently desires to release and be free from trauma. It’s an ongoing journey of seeking personal growth, underpinned by love, compassion, and open communication.

You're going to hear this again and again, week after week, time after time, but for those who are hesitating or who have prejudice, or who have preconceived notions about what yoga is, cast those aside and get onto a mat with a great teacher and begin your practice, it will lead to the resolution of trauma from the mind and body.

Tommy discusses:

  • How can we resolve trauma and be free?
  • The world of Kriya practices
  • The significance of the mind-body connection
  • The lingering effects of childhood trauma
  • Why self-awareness is the first step in healing
  • How trauma can have a ripple effect across generations

21 Feb 20233. In Recovery, What Do We Have To Look Forward To Beyond Abstinence?00:47:29

Today we have Eduardo offering up an inquiry, which has to do with the idea that different people need different things at different times. At what point in your path of recovery and discovery do you outgrow a practice or routine? Things that have helped you – be it a recovery group or the 12 Steps themselves – will not serve you in perpetuity as you continue to grow and evolve. And so you may feel that it’s time for a change.

What awaits us beyond simple abstinence? It’s important to ask ourselves where we’re going, what we should shoot for; and what do we do if and when we find ourselves isolated or separated because instead of taking a step forward through the same revolving door, we take a step up to bigger and bigger questions? Where is the 13th Step?

Tommy discusses:
  • Why the Shaman may feel isolated because of their expansive knowledge
  • People who struggle with addiction have the capability, and responsibility, to become a teacher (and why we desperately need them today)
  • The difficulty of stepping away from AA when it stops serving you
  • Evolving from the language of “I am an alcoholic.”
  • Misconception of self-control vs. the choice
  • A conversation with Ram Dass on psychedelics
  • Why happiness is not merely the relief of a craving
  • Two yogic teachings to help maintain an expanded state of consciousness: abhyasa and vairagya
  • Metaphor of dyeing cotton as it relates to recovery and evolution

19 Mar 202458. How Can I Get High in Recovery?00:36:55

In this episode of In the Circle, I am joined by John who brings an inquiry that is so relevant to every human being: How Can I Get High in Recovery? How can we replace substance-induced highs with exhilarating experiences like outdoor adventures and meaningful activities?

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of recognizing contentment, and not excitement or relief, as a foundational state in recovery. While seeking thrills is natural, these should not become new dependencies but rather moments that enhance the quality of sober life.

This episode serves as a reminder that genuine happiness and fulfillment come from within and are attainable in recovery through sustainable, healthy practices.

Tommy discusses

  • When will we learn that enough is enough?
  • Is there a natural way to get high?
  • How to let go of your addictive impulses
  • How you can begin to heal your body and mind
  • Why we must not become dependent on seeking new thrills

24 Sep 202485. What Does Conscious Recovery Look Like As We Grow Older?00:32:56

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are truly blessed to have Linda, an elder, joining us. When I say "elder," I'm referring not just to age, but to the wisdom and humility gained over time. Linda brings us such a powerful inquiry when she asks: What does conscious recovery look like as we grow older?

This deeply humbles me. It's a profound inquiry from someone with so much life experience in recovery, reminding us all that the journey continues no matter where we are.

As we age and approach the last chapter of our lives, there can be uncertainty and frustration about how we can maximize the time we have left.

In this episode, we explore what it means to be an elder, to age with dignity and power, and to find fulfillment every single day. This conversation is vital for anyone who wants to grow old consciously and live with purpose.

Tommy Discusses:

  • The power of living in the energy of gratitude
  • Dealing with regret in longer-term recovery
  • Finding grace at every age
  • What does it mean to age with dignity and consciousness?

Today, on In the Circle, there is a slightly different thing going on as we share with you a talk that I gave on our recent retreat to Big Sky Montana. There, I found myself in front of 100 people at various stages of addiction and recovery to tell my story, and that of Recovery 2.0.

This particular talk will answer so many of your questions about how we arrived at this very moment, understanding addiction at a deeper level, understanding recovery at a deeper level, and understanding where the pitfalls are along the way.

You are going to hear a lot about my personal story. I share the stories from my history towards the end of my addiction, all the way through my recovery, and then ultimately the founding of Recovery 2.0. 18 Dec 202497. Is My Sexual Desire Healthy or Addictive?00:32:53

In this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re joined by Denise, who brings forward a universally relevant and sincere inquiry about sex addiction. She asks: Is my sexual desire healthy or addictive?

At 42 years old, Denise shares candidly about being at a peak in her desire, openly questioning whether this is healthy or normal. Her vulnerability opens the door to a powerful conversation about the sexual aspect of the human experience—a topic that is often uncomfortable for many to explore.

It’s time to remove the shame surrounding this discussion and take an honest look at what it means to be healthy, happy, and free when it comes to our sex lives. I invite all listeners to approach this episode with an open mind.

Tommy Discusses:

  • When do our desires become addictions?
  • Letting go of instant gratification
  • Sexual and spiritual energy
  • Sexuality as we grow older

04 Jul 202321. Now That I’m Sober, Will I Lose My Friends?00:37:42

Today, we have the most incredible inquiry from Dane who expresses a very deep fear, one which everyone who gets sober and steps into recovery has experienced. He asks… Now that I'm sober, will I lose connection with the friends who I used to party with?

With great honesty, Dane shares that he has hid his recovery from many of his friends because he does not want them to know about it, wondering… How do I tell them about my recovery?

Here, we get to explore one of the big challenges of getting sober. The fears of not fitting in, of not having a tribe, and not being connected are primal and very real. Dane's powerful inquiry has us look at strategies for relating to people. As we transition into recovery, we learn about the necessity to listen to our own heart and stay true to the vision of what we are to become.

Tommy discusses:

• Dane asks about the viability of old friendships

• How our actions and ideas cultivate our environments

• Who will hang out with me if I’m sober?

• Making the conscious decision to change

• Being open and honest with your friends

• Tommy’s personal experiences with social groups

13 Jun 202318. How Do I Know if Marijuana is a Problem for Me?00:27:39

Today sitting with us In The Circle, we have a question from Arlena about a really hot topic; how to stop using cannabis. Arlena explains she's trying to quit using cannabis, that she lives amongst smokers and feels entangled in it. She refers to her relationship with cannabis as a love affair.

I have heard that from so many people, and this inquiry is obviously relevant as cannabis is being legalized across the United States. More and more, people are finding that there are some challenges with this particular plant that they might not have been aware of before.

If this conversation feels relevant for you, I want to let you know about a new program we created called Life Beyond Cannabis. This is a six-week online program – transformational, powerful – truly an incredible opportunity for somebody to let go of cannabis. Please come check it out at r20.com\lifebeyondcannabis.

Tommy discusses:

• 3 ways cannabis can be relevant for humans

• Medical and spiritual uses of cannabis

• This plant’s role in Tommy’s journey

• How cannabis can suppress emotion

• When Tommy knew he had become dependent on cannabis

• Detoxing from cannabis

• Becoming liberated from dependency

• Letting go of judgment and accepting the exploration of truth

07 May 202465. How Can I Navigate Relapse Without Fear Or Shame?00:36:25

In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Dorcus, who brings us an incredibly vital inquiry: How Can I Navigate Relapse Without Fear Or Shame? This normal and stigmatized phenomenon is part of most individuals' recovery journeys.

We explore the traditional 12-step method that requires starting over on day one post-relapse. While this method emphasizes the importance of recognizing milestones in recovery, it can also lead to feelings of shame and guilt, which may prevent people from re-engaging with the support they need.

This conversation is crucial for anyone looking to navigate the ups and downs of recovery and to reach a higher consciousness or awakening through their journey.

Tommy discusses

  • Am I broken if I relapse?
  • Why you need a community and support system
  • Recovery is an evolutionary path
  • The protocol to follow after a relapse
  • How yoga and breathwork can help you on your path of discovery

19 Nov 202493. How Can I Embrace The Present Moment and Trust My Journey As It Unfolds?00:38:13

In this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Raiza who brings us a profound inquiry: How Can I Embrace The Present Moment and Trust My Journey As It Unfolds?

Raiza shares that she started her spiritual journey later in life, while many teachers she admires began their paths and awakenings early on. This has left her feeling 'behind,' as though she should be further along her journey.

This question resonates deeply with us as we navigate time—perceiving it as past, present, and future—while knowing that true peace lies in the eternal now.

How do we embrace where we are today without judgment? How can we stay present and make empowered choices without being burdened by the feeling of falling behind?

In this episode, we explore how to find presence, that transformative superpower where joy, healing, love, and life reside.

This conversation is a reminder that being present in the now is the key to experiencing the fullness of our lives.

Tommy Discusses:

  • Letting go of attachment and resentment
  • How to be fully in the present
  • Why being present is the key to getting the most out of life
  • Break the cycle of comparison

16 Apr 202462. How Can I Manage My Newfound Energy After Getting Sober from Cannabis?00:23:31

In this episode of In the Circle, I’m so delighted to field an inquiry from Megan. She asks: How can I manage my newfound energy and excitement after getting sober from cannabis?

So many people don't understand the nuances of what cannabis does, and how it affects our emotional state and our brain nor do they understand the nuances of recovering from cannabis and the kinds of things that one will experience on their path of recovery from that particular substance.

Megan is experiencing a burst of energy now that she is on the path of recovery. We're going to get into an exploration of recovery from cannabis addiction and how to manage an awakening of energy that comes from detoxing from substances.

Tommy discusses

  • Managing your energy during an awakening
  • Is cannabis addictive?
  • How to shift your emotional state
  • How recovery opens up a whole new world
  • Upgrading your life from the spiritual perspective

19 Dec 202345. Why A Grateful Addict Never Relapses00:37:28

In this episode of In the Circle, I explore the theme of moving beyond addiction and thriving in all aspects of life. Addiction is a universal human experience, and everyone is on the spectrum of this journey in some way.

By using the practice of yoga and meditation, we find ourselves able to move from a state of darkness and addiction toward light, freedom, and joy—true contentment involves a life free from cravings, compulsions, and complaints.

It is impossible to experience true gratitude while harboring these things, and it has been said that a grateful addict never relapses. We need to evolve from being the victims of our lives to being the architects of our destiny, actively shaping our experiences with awareness, responsibility, and empowered choice.

Tommy discusses

  • Celebrating light in the darkness
  • Why you cannot complain and experience gratitude at the same time
  • The power of Santosha
  • How to stop living from craving to craving
  • The power of mantra and mindfulness in addiction recovery

03 Oct 202334. Personal Will vs. God’s Will: How Can We Know The Difference?00:33:58

On this episode of In The Circle, we have the honor of sitting with Amy Elizabeth, who is posing a very profound question for us—How can I tell the difference between my will and God's will for me, and how can I know the difference between pushing forward with my ego versus pushing forward as a call to my purpose?

These are important questions for anybody on a path of recovery, and naturally, this is going to be a profoundly spiritual inquiry, which is critically important to the human experience. In the reality where there is a higher power we can tap into, where does this higher power begin and where do we end? We need to remember that this higher power is not a distant force, but one that is deeply intertwined with our very being.

It’s when we align with this divine energy that we can usher in a sense of flow, even if life remains punctuated with challenges. That being said, there's much to be learned, not only from our moments of success when we feel aligned, but also in times of grief and sadness. We must introspect on these insights and consider how they might apply to our own lives.

Tommy discusses:

  • The complexities of understanding and differentiating between personal will (our desires and actions) and divine will (a higher power's intention)
  • Why recovery starts as a discipline
  • Why therapy is not just for those who can't figure out their relationships but for anyone seeking growth
  • The reason turning inward for self-inquiry can help align with a greater intelligence
  • The idea that God is not separate from us but is part of us and everything else

29 Oct 202490. How Can I Move Beyond Addictive Patterns with Food?00:31:11

In this week’s episode of In The Circle, I’m thrilled to dive into an incredibly meaningful topic that impacts each of us — our relationship with food. Alyssa joins us with an inquiry about something fundamental to the human experience - How Can I Move Beyond Addictive Patterns with Food?

Food has a powerful impact on how we feel, think, and interact in the world. It affects our energy, our mood, and even the way we show up in relationships.

For those of us on the recovery path, it can be difficult to fully surrender to the principle that every compulsive bite blocks our connection to spirit. It’s such a powerful question because, in one way or another, it touches us all.

Together, we’re going to examine what it means to truly honor our bodies and spirits through our relationship with food — an exploration I believe is at the heart of recovery and personal growth.

Tommy Discusses:

  • Strategies to change your relationship with food
  • The 12-hour food window
  • Why moving our bodies is so important
  • How emotions affect our eating habits and patterns

16 May 202315. What If The 12-Steps Aren’t For Me?00:30:34

Welcome to In The Circle. Thank you for being here today. In this episode, we check in with Jeanne, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community. She shares about how the 12-steps will always be the foundation of her recovery, but that after a while she felt called to explore alternative paths of healing.

What starts as a question about adopting modern day healing modalities into 12-step recovery turns into a powerful look at what is broken about our approach to recovery in America and what we can do about it.

We take a hard look at some of the problems with the decision to treat addiction with drugs. There are so many options, and it is certainly my prayer that people will explore all the avenues that lead to health and wellness. I advocate for yoga, breath work, athletics, healthy diet, time in community, lots of time in nature, and of course, I think people should get naturally high every single day.

We want to thank Jeanne today for asking this question and bringing so much to the table that we can explore. It's absolutely critical that we take stock of why we do what we do, especially when it comes to our decisions about healthcare and the wellbeing of all people.

Tommy discusses:

  • Considering the 12-step doctrine
  • Ways modern treatment approaches fall short
  • Is the world ready for new modalities of healing?
  • Poorly designed institutions and agencies
  • Advocate for healing, not against broken systems

02 May 202313. Parenting A Child Struggling With Addiction00:23:59

In The Circle today, we are sitting with the feelings of powerlessness, worry, and fear that loved ones of those in recovery face. Ann, a member of our Recovery 2.0 program, asks… How can I stay present with my child in recovery when my own fear arises?

In exploring this inquiry, we're reminded, first and foremost, that there's no stronger prayer in the universe than a mother's prayer, and that worry doesn't change outcomes – presence does.

The simple fact of the matter is that we cannot control what other people do, what they think, where they go, or the decisions they make. But we can be shining examples in their life, demonstrating solutions, and victory, rather than fueling the fires of insecurity and doubt.

Tommy discusses:

• Why a mother’s prayer is the strongest prayer of them all

• Showing up as an example of victory

• Shifting your mindset to be in the solution rather than the problem

• Connecting with the truth of the situation

• Why presence is the key to offering effective support

• Getting out of a place of worry and fear

27 Nov 202494. How Can I Move Beyond Judgment?00:32:59

In this week’s episode of In The Circle, we're joined by Louise, who brings an essential question to the discussion: How can I move beyond judgment?

This is incredibly relevant in today's world, where judgment often pulls us away from being present. When we're in a state of judgment, we're uncomfortable and caught up in blame, complaint, and external focus, which only breeds resentment and frustration.

In this episode, we'll explore how to shift from judgment to discernment—cultivating greater understanding, wisdom, and grace in our decision-making processes.

We’ll explore this transformative topic in-depth and uncover ways to live more present and empowered lives.

Tommy Discusses:

  • How to move beyond judgment
  • The journey of peace begins within
  • Discernment vs condemnation
  • We are always growing and changing

06 Feb 202452. How Do I Get Sober?00:53:50

In this episode of In the Circle, we take a look at an inquiry I get asked the most: How Do I Get Sober? What does sobriety truly entail?

By asking this question, we are looking for a way to evolve into a better version of ourselves– to let go of the old and embrace the new. In order to move towards a life filled with more love, connection, and fulfillment, we need to be honest, vulnerable, and open to change.

We need to remember that momentum comes slowly and develop a one-day-at-a-time concept of life. All we have to do is stay sober today. If you're reading this, the time has come for you to make the change that you know you must make.

Tommy discusses

  • The step-by-step process to getting sober
  • Why there is strength in vulnerability
  • Why you should never hesitate to phone a friend!
  • The one-day-at-a-time approach to addiction recovery
  • The power of a daily recovery routine

In this episode of In the Circle, I share with you one of the most powerful stories of my life—The creation story of Recovery 2.0 and In the Circle.

We're going to be looking directly at the concept of coincidence, magic, and the extraordinary moments when everything comes together. In today's episode, you'll hear about my improbable, almost impossible meeting with Guru Prem, who became my teacher and is the father of Recovery 2.0.

Because of his love, wisdom, and teachings, I was able to heal myself from chronic back pain and move into a level of recovery, of presence, of love that I could only have ever imagined. Our mind, body, and spirit are intertwined. We need to heal all to be truly free from pain and addiction.

Happy holidays to all!

Tommy discusses

  • How I no longer suffer from back pain
  • The power of breathwork and yoga
  • Why we should open our hearts and minds to unconventional healing
  • Understanding addiction and the mind-body connection

02 Jul 202473. When Will I Be Ready To Experience True Freedom From Addiction?00:30:08

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we have Bob here with us at 20 years sober. Bob is asking a profound question related to the 12 step path: How would you describe the process of becoming entirely ready?

Now, for those who are not familiar with step six, it reads: we were entirely ready to have God remove these defects of character.  This brings up a lot of questions and some confusion about what God is doing and how God does it exactly. We need to explore this and ask ourselves: what do we need to do to truly advance ourselves along a spiritual path?

How can we awaken out of addiction and experience true freedom? What is the path? What does God have to do with it? What do we have to do with it?

Tommy discusses

  • The role of “God” or “Spirit” in Recovery
  • How Spirit works through us, not for us
  • How the 12 steps and yoga are related
  • Breaking the frequency of addiction with self-forgiveness

In this episode of In the Circle, I am joined by Bernice, a distinguished addiction counselor and fellow traveler in long-term recovery. She inquires: How Can I Inspire Others Into Addiction Recovery?

We dive deep into the complex world of individuals battling severe addiction issues compounded by intergenerational trauma, homelessness, and a profound sense of hopelessness. We also explore what it means to inspire recovery and hope in those who feel forgotten by society, and possible solutions we can offer.

This episode is a candid look into the intersection of addiction with societal failings, reminding us that not everybody has someone to turn to in their time of need. Be someone’s angel today and reach out to those in the grip of severe addiction.

Tommy discusses

  • How you can offer support to someone going through addiction
  • Whether or not medication-assisted treatment is useful
  • How we can care better for those battling trauma and addiction
  • How to reconnect with love
  • Why yoga, meditation, and breathwork can change your life

23 Jul 202476. Could I Be Addicted to Procrastination?00:44:04

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Galen brings to light the addictive nature of procrastination.

When we actively avoid things we need to do - and even things we may want to do - it erodes our confidence. We may even take other actions that cause us harm.

I look at procrastination as one of the four aggravations: Negative thinking, self-doubt, procrastination, and resentment. These are all patterns of belief and behavior that get in the way of a person's happiness. So, while nobody ‘craves’ these four aggravations, they do fit my definition of addiction: Any behavior someone continues to do despite it bringing negative consequences into their life.

This brings the concept of addiction to everyone's doorstep. Most of us have experienced any or all of these four aggravations at some point… so why do we continue to do these things when they are getting in the way of our progress and desires?

Any pattern of behavior that stops us from living the life we want to live should be addressed. So let’s dive into the roots of procrastination and discuss ways to break free of this habit for good.

Tommy discusses

  • The 4 Aggravations: Negative thinking, self-doubt, procrastination, and resentment
  • How to overcome procrastination
  • The impact that one small step can make
  • Why you don’t need labels
  • Everyone's recovery journey is different

23 May 202316. How Do I Overcome My Inner Critic?00:23:17

Welcome to In The Circle. It is always such a blessing to sit and explore with you all. Today, we hear a sharply relevant inquiry to all humankind. Mariana, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community, shares that she has had a direct experience of the positive effects of Kundalini yoga, and yet her inner critic still questions the practice.

We all have these voices within us that question our evolution and transformation, even when we know that what we are doing is working.

Everybody wants to learn and grow, and we often experience our own resistance when we seek to change. If we are to make true progress, we will have to find a way to overcome our own resistance and quiet down that inner critic.

The ideas we explore in this episode of In The Circle will hopefully inspire you to continue to push through your doubts and resistance when your personal experience supports doing so. Are there any ways your inner critic has gotten in the way of your forward progress? It is definitely a valuable inquiry for us all.

Tommy discusses:

  • How can I overcome the inner critic?
  • Background on Sadhana and Kundalini
  • Looking at our experience with yoga
  • Questioning the inner critic
  • Stepping into the unknown
  • Yoga as a representation of recovery

21 Nov 202341. How can I react differently to people, places, and things that irritate or trigger me?00:35:48

On this episode of In The Circle, we explore deep into the heart of recovery and self-discovery, guided by a compelling inquiry from Tim—How can I change my response when confronting people, places, and things that trigger frustration and irritability? This question is not just relevant but essential for those of us on the path of recovery, as it touches on the core issue of dealing with our reactions when we no longer hide behind addictive behaviors.

The externally focused mind highlights the common trap of seeking satisfaction from outside sources, which often leads to frustration, anger, and a sense of failure when things don’t align the way that “we” want them to. We must look inward and understand that true peace and alignment come from within, not from the external world.

This internal focus shifts the emphasis from external validation to internal peace and self-awareness. Recovery is not just about abstaining from addictive behaviors, but also about elevating our consciousness and living a life of presence, kindness, and compassion.

Tommy discusses

  • Shifting our focus from external validation to internal peace
  • Why we all need self-reflection and inner focus
  • The benefits of developing a ‘neutral mind’
  • How to stay centered during difficult times
  • The true nature of addiction

18 Jun 202471. As Within, So Without: The Microbiome & Recovery with Zach Bush, MD01:09:03

This week, I am very excited to share a podcast that breaks tradition with our normal format.

Normally, I answer questions from people in recovery all over the world. This episode features an interview I conducted with Zach Bush, MD., from the recent Life Beyond Addiction Conference.

Zach is a renowned, multi-disciplinary physician of internal medicine, endocrinology, and hospice care, as well as an internationally recognized educator on the microbiome as it relates to human health, soil health, food systems, and a regenerative future.

This interview was among the most watched during the Life Beyond Addiction Conference.

Zach shares profound wisdom about the power of nature, the interconnectedness of all things, and the way beyond all addiction. There are no words to fully describe the depth of this conversation.

You just have to listen for yourself as we cover a lot of territory.

P.S. If you would like to watch or listen to any or all of the conference collection, you can purchase the full conference at lifebeyondaddiction.com/collection2024

Tommy discusses

  • The connection between addiction and abandonment

  • Understanding spiritual connection

  • Mankind’s separation from nature

  • The power of yoga and its potential flaws

  • Identity Crisis and Coping Mechanisms

28 Nov 202342. Can Yoga Offer New Perspectives on Overcoming Addiction?00:39:57

On this episode of In The Circle, I join Anand Mehrotra from the Sattva Yoga Academy in Rishikesh, India, to discuss a topic I strongly believe in—addiction and recovery through the Yoga-Vedantic approach. Anand Mehrotra is a world-renowned visionary master, evolutionary thought leader, and entrepreneurial and social change trailblazer. He is the founder and master teacher of Sattva Yoga and Sattva Yoga Academy.

Amazing things take place whenever we get a chance to look at addiction through the lens of yoga.

I have found it profoundly necessary in our modern approach to addiction to start to bring in some of these new perspectives. We allow ourselves to gain further knowledge by working to expand our understanding of addiction and bring to light the innate quest for bliss and connection that is the drive of the human experience.

Tommy discusses

  • The integration of Yoga and Recovery
  • Human nature and its role in addiction
  • The power of sharing personal experiences and transformation
  • The need for humans to give a form to God
  • The need for continual adaptation and innovation in recovery practices

14 Mar 20236. Alcohol Is Not Ruining My Life, But I Can’t Stop Drinking00:35:06

Today’s inquiry is from our community member, Rebecca, who says, "alcohol is not ruining my life, but I can't stop drinking." This is specifically important for those in recovery, and yet relevant for everyone else.

Because this inquiry is for the person who does not identify as an alcoholic. This is for the person who isn’t going to necessarily end up at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. This is for the person who is able to stop drinking for a week or two, but find themselves going back to it again, and again, and again.

The severe alcoholic in one respect, in one single respect, has it easier than anybody else: because there's no question that they have a problem, and there's no question that they need to change. But we do not agree with the premise that people need to be utterly broken in their life in order to try something new.

What if we didn't judge drinking as good or bad? What if we just reflected upon our own experience, our own feelings, and we can make a decision for ourselves from that place? Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing?

Tommy discusses:

• The concept of a “high bottom”

• The definition of a teaching, and how it applies universally

• The importance of practice in recovery, and not looking for a specific “end date”

• Misunderstandings around alcohol

• Light, medium, and heavy drinking

01 Jan 202599. What Is the True Meaning of Happiness in Life and Recovery?00:30:50

In this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re joined by John, who poses one of humanity’s most timeless questions: What is happiness?

In recovery, we often hear about being “happy, joyous, and free,” the ultimate state achieved through the transformative work of recovery. But what does that truly mean?

John's question invites us to explore the essence of happiness and its distinction from contentment. This conversation sets the stage for an important teaching known as the Seven Steps to Happiness. This powerful framework begins and ends in unexpected places, guiding us toward a deeper understanding of joy and fulfillment.

This teaching illuminates a pathway to happiness and a profound state of contentment, reminding us that these states are attainable through conscious choice.

Tommy Discusses:

  • The road to happiness
  • Is happiness the same thing as contentment?
  • We’ll never find inner peace if we look to the external world
  • Meditation is the pathway to true contentment

26 Sep 202333. What Can I Do To Find Peace When Life Becomes Unmanageable?00:37:53

On this episode of In the Circle, I had the privilege of engaging with Brien, who bravely shares the challenges he is currently facing, from past traumas and medical malpractice to deep-seated religious concerns. He inquires—How can you manage when too many elements from the past and present slam into you all at once?

This is an inquiry that is relevant to us all. When we are struck with moments like these, it is crucial to anchor ourselves in the present moment and focus on the transformative roles of meditation and yoga by calming the mind, spirit, and body.

It's essential to understand that moving from a place of feeling overwhelmed and victimized requires one to take control and let go of past narratives. This is vital on our journey towards self-awareness, authenticity, and understanding our personal narratives.

Tommy discusses:

  • The importance of anchoring oneself in the present moment
  • Why we need to set healthy boundaries
  • Why many in the recovery process feel overwhelmed and out of control
  • How to embrace a life of freedom and presence
  • Why authenticity, self-awareness, and self-reflection are key components in the recovery process
  • Why you need to challenge and evaluate the stories you tell yourself

24 Oct 202337. How Can I Stop Engaging In Risky & Harmful Behaviors?00:27:51

On this episode of In the Circle we delve into a profound question brought up by James—Why do we, as humans, engage in behaviors we know are harmful? It's clear that being human is challenging, and to cope, we sometimes find ourselves trapped in patterns of behavior that once served a purpose but eventually brought negative consequences.

Our five senses allow us to experience unparalleled joys, from the music we hear to the food we taste. This pursuit of heightened experiences often causes imbalances, making us prone to addictions and unhealthy patterns. It's essential to recognize that we're driven by our body's inner chemistry. By understanding our hormonal and nervous systems, we can identify the underpinnings of our cravings, whether they stem from sugar imbalances or other impactful sensations.

Addiction, as I see it, is any behavior that continues despite its detrimental effects. The solution lies in altering our nervous system's patterning, realigning with our body's inherent intelligence, and uncovering joy in ordinary moments.

Tommy discusses:

  • Why we crave dangerous and thrilling behaviors
  • How we can change our nervous system patterning
  • Are any of us really, truly, broken?
  • How the food we consume greatly impacts our recovery journeys
  • Why we need to be content with life and find joy in the subtle things
  • How the endocrine and nervous system affects our bodies

09 Jul 202474. Am I addicted to sugar?00:24:39

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Nicole is here with us bringing an inquiry about what I call the real gateway drug. Of course, I'm speaking about sugar. Nicole asks: Am I addicted to sugar? Should I abstain completely or is there a place of moderation?

Now, I believe that addressing one's relationship with food and sugar in particular is a central part of recovery for everyone. In Nicole's case, she let go of alcohol several years ago and wants to take her recovery journey to the next level by addressing her relationship with food.

I've seen countless people stuck in the frequency of addiction because they stay in old addictive patterns when it comes to food. This is one of the most important inquiries when it comes to true recovery as we need to be present in our minds and bodies to address the underlying reasons for our food cravings.

Tommy discusses

  • Changing your relationship with food
  • What is the root cause of your cravings?
  • Does our microbiome affect the foods we crave?
  • Learning to be conscious with our food choices
  • Why the food we eat can make a huge impact on recovery

In this episode of In the Circle, we have the honor of hearing a powerful inquiry from Patience—How Can I Be More Grounded In The Present Moment and Not Stuck In The Past?

This inquiry is crucial as it points our attention to the power of the words we choose, even the words that we direct toward ourselves.

Of course, our habits of negative self-talk are the result of conditioning. We have trained ourselves into these patterns, and today we will explore ways to train ourselves out of them.

Tommy discusses

  • The Four Aggravations that keep us stuck in the frequency of addiction
  • What is the underlying cause of addiction?
  • How you can start letting go of negative thoughts and self-talk
  • Why the path of Yoga is so important on your recovery journey

21 Mar 20237. The Power And The Pitfalls Of Grief00:31:27

Today's inquiry comes to us from Melly, who brings up the topic of grief and loss. We’ll discuss the importance of allowing ourselves to fully feel the waves of grief when it comes up for us. Because grief and loss can lead to relapse in some cases; and it’s essential that we let those feelings in and give ourselves time to process.

We will often attach stories to grief; whether it’s losing a child to addiction, not being able to care for a parent in their illness, or not being present when a loved one passes away. These stories stick with us, and cause the grief to stick as well, so we need to learn to release them through our healing process. When we lose people, our way of communicating with them must change. Their form has changed, but their connectedness to us never goes away.

Tommy discusses:

• The difference between sadness and grief

• The stories we attach to grief, and how to release them

• How grief affects those who have lost loved ones, children, and animals

• Experiencing grief in recovery

• Why grief can lead to relapse in some cases

• How to navigate grief

09 Jan 202448. How Do I Navigate Life As A Young Sober Person?00:33:34

In this episode of In the Circle, I have the joy of hearing from Haley today who asks an amazingly relevant question—How Do I Navigate Life As A Young Sober Person?

Who is my community going to be? Who am I going to get to hang out with? Who will want to hang out with this new version of me? How do I find other people who are interested in health and wellness as a person on a path of discovery?

Stepping onto a new path of recovery can be a scary experience, but knowing that you won’t have to do it alone makes the journey less intimidating. As you continue through recovery, you start to embrace new experiences. You start to look for new communities and new interests, and find the world as you know it expands.

Tommy discusses

  • There Is Life After Addiction
  • How to be alone and content
  • Why your world expands after recovery
  • How to find your community of like-minded people

28 Mar 20238. Understanding Relapse: Abstinence vs. True Recovery00:33:11

Today's thoughtful inquiry comes to us from Elizabeth, as she offers the deeply meaningful subject of relapse for closer inspection. In doing so, we reframe the meaning of the word, removing all shame from its existence, and call in the support of others on the path.

Where it’s easy to point blame at a person, a circumstance, even one defining moment – we learn to take a step back, in silence, to assess the many other variables that led to such a moment. In taking responsibility for how we can get there, it becomes easier to avoid the same path.

Tommy discusses:

• Relapse is not a necessity, even though it's very common

• Optionality of relapse outcomes

• Identifying and traveling to different levels of consciousness

• How can we avoid relapse?

• What are the signs of a relapse?

In this week’s episode of In The Circle, I explore Karen's thought-provoking question: How Can I Maintain Inner Peace When Faced With External Pressures?

Together, we explore the intersection of yoga teachings, social justice, and the 12-step philosophy. Karen shares her reflections on how yoga sometimes aligns with social causes and the inner conflict she feels when seeking to live from the "inside out" while staying true to her spiritual path.

We look at how we can balance inner peace with external challenges, honoring diverse approaches to spiritual practice, and navigating the delicate balance between personal truth and collective values.

Whether you’re curious about how yoga philosophy applies to modern issues or seeking clarity in your own journey, this episode invites you to reflect, connect, and find your center amidst the complexities of life.

Tommy Discusses:

  • The power of being present in your body
  • Finding inner peace among chaos
  • Why we should learn to embrace silence
  • We can choose where to focus our energy

05 Mar 202456. Can the 12 steps be beneficial if you don’t have substance use addictions?00:33:20

In this episode of In the Circle, we explore an amazing inquiry about the 12 steps from Amit. He asks: Can the 12 steps be useful for people who do not have substance use addictions?

Can they be helpful for people who experience trauma, depression, or anxiety?

I credit the 12 steps with saving my life from severe drug addiction. At the same time, I feel the 12 steps are but one possible entry point to a life beyond addiction.

This thought-provoking inquiry allows us to explore what the 12 steps are, what they are not, and why I believe everyone should take the time to explore what the 12 steps have to offer.

Tommy discusses

  • Why we follow the 12 steps
  • Are the 12 steps for everyone?
  • How to live a life beyond addiction
  • The first step to recovery
  • How to let go of the past and start anew

07 Mar 20235. Can Addiction Ever Be Cured?00:38:48

Today’s inquiry is from Jacob, and the question that came up for him was… "Is there a cure for addiction?" I want to be clear that I feel that addiction is part of the human condition. We all experience it in some way. We’re all on the spectrum. It was important to me that we go deep on this subject, as I feel this question touches all of us in some way. It’s something that many of us in recovery – and our loved ones – have asked.

Jacob’s earnestness and vulnerability in bringing forth this inquiry are so important. Everyone in the circle benefits when anyone demonstrates this kind of depth.

Tommy discusses:

  • Is there a “magic pill” to treat addiction?
  • Tommy’s revolutionary way of thinking about addiction and recovery
  • Alignment with and evolution of 12-steps/AA
  • The definition of addiction
  • Putting a new lens on how you see time and assess your progress

23 Jan 202450. How Can I Start Loving Myself Again?00:22:07

In this episode of In the Circle, we have a transformative conversation on sobriety and personal growth with Keith, who inquires: How do I fix my long-standing issues of self-discontent and low self-esteem, a cycle I’ve been trapped in for years?

To truly be free from addictive behaviors, we need to start realizing our inner divinity and the power of living in the present moment. Thoughts of what might have been are unproductive and only do us harm in the end.

Adjusting perspectives and accepting the timing of life events is crucial for personal growth and healing. This episode offers hope and guidance to those on their own recovery path and serves as a reminder of the transformative power of self-awareness and community support.

Tommy discusses

  • How to break free from the stories we tell ourselves
  • An exercise for being in the present moment
  • How sobriety is just the first step in recovery
  • How to continue celebrating your successes along your recovery journey
  • The Vital Role of community in addiction Recovery

08 Aug 202326. How Can I Stop Procrastinating?00:33:08

On this episode of In The Circle, we have an amazing inquiry from Daphne about one of the Four Aggravations—Procrastination. When we procrastinate, we reinforce stress in our bodies and create a less-than-peaceful way to live. We repeat a pattern that perpetuates feelings of discomfort, resulting in new ways to distract ourselves to avoid the ongoing pain.

Procrastination is what I consider to be one of the most overlooked, addictive, and destructive behaviors, which is why I am so grateful for this question. Together, we’ll explore procrastination, some of its causes, and many ways we can overcome it.

This discussion is for anyone who knows the pain of avoidance and putting off the pursuit of our dreams. Let's break away from procrastination together, one step at a time.

Tommy discusses:

  • How 1 step at a time can help you beat procrastination
  • Why I made procrastination one of the Four Aggravations
  • Why small things done consistently, bring progress
  • The three D’s: Desire, Direction, Devotion
  • How to free yourself from uncomfortable patterns

Whether you're working on the 12 steps now, just curious, or anywhere in between, today's talk is for everyone. Let's dive into what the 12 steps are all about, what they're not, and how to implement them into your long-term recovery.

  • What is Recovery?
  • What are the 12 Steps and are they effective?
  • Do I NEED to do the 12-step program?
  • Recovery vs Abstinence

In this episode of In the Circle, we're joined by Michele, who inquires: How can I navigate the frequency of financial sobriety?

This critical topic is an often overlooked aspect of recovery,  whether it's managing debt, curbing excessive shopping, or addressing gambling habits, financial sobriety speaks to our core relationship with money and the energy it represents.

This conversation is essential for anyone on the path of recovery who seeks to understand the broader implications of their financial habits and how to approach them with a healthier mindset.

Tommy discusses

  • What is the frequency of addiction?
  • How to achieve financial sobriety
  • How is your relationship with money impacting your life?
  • The incredible power of yoga and meditation
  • When is enough truly enough?

09 Apr 202461. How is Modern Technology Affecting People In Recovery?00:39:29

In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Reno who brings us an extremely thought-provoking question. He inquires: How is Modern Technology Affecting People In Recovery?

Modern technology and social media, while useful and integrated into our daily lives, can distract us from what truly matters - being present, being conscious, and accessing your higher self.

There's a growing need for us to navigate these spaces more consciously, striving for real connection over digital interaction. It's about finding balance and ensuring that our digital habits don't detract from real-world experiences and relationships.

Tommy discusses

  • Is technology destroying our concentration?
  • Are we addicted to our cell phones?
  • How social media fuels division
  • Why we need to connect more in person
  • The need to be in the world, but not of it

20 Jun 202319. Can I Be Empathetic Without Being Codependent?00:32:46

In The Circle today, we have an inquiry from Leslie that brings us face-to-face with codependency. I consider codependency to be a very painful, addictive pattern, which affects all of our relationships. It is complicated. It has many different manifestations.

Today, we will look at codependency through the lens of empathy. Leslie asks… What role does empathy play in codependency? In other words, if in codependent relationships we are more focused on another person's behavior or needs than our own, what happens for a person who is empathic, who can feel into another person's emotions as if they were their own?

It is a fascinating and quite revealing inquiry that leads us to better understand ourselves and our relationships in the world.

I feel strongly that for people walking a path of discovery in recovery, it is important to learn more about codependency, which is often an addiction that exists before other addictions show up. If you or anyone you know wants to take the steps necessary to move beyond codependency, any addictions, and thrive in life, come join us in the Recovery 2.0 community. Check us out at r20.com/welcome.

Tommy discusses:

• Tapping into the energy of truth and authenticity

• Cultivating an awareness of when we’re out of alignment with our true self

• Remaining in authenticity and integrity with self

• Managing the gift of empathy

• How to offer empathy in a healthy way

• Exploring interdependency

10 Jan 2023Welcome to In The Circle00:01:41

Join Tommy Rosen – internationally renowned yoga teacher, addiction recovery expert, and founder of Recovery 2.0 – and a global community of people overcoming addiction and thriving in life. On the In The Circle podcast, you’ll hear questions asked and stories told that go far beyond just substance abuse. The insights and answers touch each and every one of us as we struggle with the human condition and find ways forward to healing and freedom.

Through deep conversation and thoughtful inquiry, Tommy helps everyone – regardless of their past with addiction – move from recovery, to discovery; to step out of isolation, and into the circle.

01 Oct 202486. How Can I Push Through Resistance to Change?00:33:22

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re diving into another powerful inquiry from someone who traveled with me to one of our Recovery 2.0 retreats in England. Today’s guest, Perry, asks: How can I push through my resistance to change?

During our England retreat, we discussed something I call resistance training. When I mention resistance training, I’m talking about engaging in activities that naturally bring up our own resistance. I’m referring to – the voice that says, "I’ll do it tomorrow."

The practice of resistance training is about purposefully doing those things that challenge us, allowing us to break through that resistance and emerge stronger.

In Recovery 2.0, we emphasize this training to help us become our best selves. Perry also asks me about the practices I personally use to overcome my resistance and show up fully in life.

Through this episode, we'll explore the mind, body, and spirit, and discuss ways we can all set up the conditions to blow through our resistance to the things we know are good for us. This, I believe, is key to finding daily fulfillment and moving forward on what I call the path of discovery.

Tommy Discusses:

  • How I overcome resistance to change in my life
  • The powerful tool of accountability
  • Building awareness around your own resistance
  • How you can push past limitations and get out of your own way

03 Sep 202482. How Can I Regulate My Emotions Quickly When I’m Triggered By My Own Thinking?00:37:13

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Rosie, who brings a relevant and powerful inquiry for our consideration:  How can I quickly regulate my emotions and ground myself, so I don't get lost in the story my mind creates?

This is a deeply relevant inquiry—who hasn’t found themselves trapped by the narratives they carry in their mind? It’s all too common to become our own biggest triggers, getting swept away by our thoughts and emotions.

Recovery, however, is more than abstinence. It’s about moving beyond the limiting stories that keep us stuck and discovering new ways of thinking that empower us. It’s the process of letting go of old, unhelpful stories and embracing ones that enhance our connection to truth, power, love, and life itself.

By rewriting our stories, we can open the door to deeper healing and a more authentic, fulfilling existence.

Tommy Discusses:

  • How to disrupt negative emotions
  • How to reframe the narratives that keep you stuck
  • Your thoughts hold no power over you
  • How the mind and breath are connected
  • You are not your thoughts and emotions

28 Feb 20234. How Can We Escape the “Frequency of Addiction”?00:33:43

The frequency of addiction. Think about those words. Today’s question is “how do you know when you’re in or out of the frequency of addiction?” The member who asked this question gave us an analogy of Russian dolls, where every time you open one and think you’ve reached the end, but you’re greeted with another, and another, and another. Addiction feels like this sometimes.

And before you become sober, identifying this frequency and its harmful patterns can seem almost impossible. You can’t think your way into a new level of awareness; it takes practice. But once you commit yourself to this lifelong practice, you’ll start to attract new types of people to you, and new opportunities will become possible for you; all because you changed your frequency.

Tommy discusses:

  • His final visit to a casino, its awful energy and environment, and how this led to an epiphany
  • Why people struggling with addiction continue to find themselves in the same unhealthy patterns
  • Why the quality of your sobriety is not a guarantee; you must maintain the practice
  • Why you need to change the frequency around you first, in order to put your body & mind into a state where you can start to identify patterns and make changes
  • Everyone has the power to change their frequency

18 Jul 202323. What Role Does Trauma Play in Addiction?00:28:21

This episode of In The Circle concerns an inquiry from Celeste about the role that trauma plays in addiction and why yoga and community are important in our healing. Unpacking this powerful inquiry, we come to better understand trauma by looking at methods we can use to move through it and set ourselves free.

To start, we define trauma as leftover emotional residue from our reaction to an unpleasant experience. It lives in the mind, the tissues of the body, and in our energy body. We can remain stuck in trauma for a long time, or we can learn how to heal ourselves.

Certainly a hot-button issue in today’s toxic society, we hope this exploration allows listeners to see trauma in a new light by focusing on the role that our stories play in the resulting ongoing pain, and by demonstrating how not to remain stuck in them any longer than necessary.

Tommy discusses:

• Exploring the definitions of trauma and resentment

• Living in the present moment

• How severe trauma changes a person’s life

• Using yoga and therapy to break harmful patterns

• Why we shouldn’t wear our trauma as a badge of courage

• Transcending your past stories

07 Feb 20231. Is It Possible For A Person In Recovery To Truly Reach A Place Of Peace?00:47:57

Theresa is sitting in circle with us today, and she's asked a very important question: is it possible for a person in recovery to truly reach a place of peace and contentment? This incredibly powerful question, it seems to me, is really about the entire human race. Is it possible for any person, whether in recovery or not, to truly find peace and contentment?

And yet, when we look at this inquiry through the lens of addiction and recovery, we learn so much about ourselves. Our minds are responsible for some of the problems that we encounter, but our minds also create the solutions. Thoughts lead to impressions, impressions lead to habits, and our habits determine how we act in this world. It’s only by taking action to change these habits that we can move forward into a greater state of awareness and presence.

Tommy discusses:

  • Misconceptions of Karma
  • Why anxiety is a habitual response to your environment
  • Why you may feel that you’re at the mercy of everything around you (a “victim of circumstance”)
  • Solutions for anxiety through forming new, healthier habits
  • How you can shift your focus from the symptom of a problem towards its solution
  • Why you should start enjoying “the thing” instead of “the outcome”
  • Shame, and how it keeps you stuck

10 Sep 202483. Take Back Your Mind: The Science of Inner Transformation with Reverend Michael Beckwith, PhD.00:55:00

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, I am honored to connect with Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith, founder and CEO of Agape International Spiritual Center, a renowned trans-denominational community in Los Angeles.

With thousands of local members and global live streamers, Agape is celebrated for its cultural, racial, and spiritual inclusivity. The late Coretta Scott King once praised Dr. Beckwith, saying, "I greatly admire what you are doing to bring about the beloved community," echoing the legacy of her late husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Beckwith is widely known for his teachings on inner transformation and unity, offering a practical approach to spirituality through meditation, affirmative prayer, and his Life Visioning process. This spiritual technology empowers individuals to evolve, live authentically, and fulfill their purpose consciously.

His teachings help integrate inner peace and awakened awareness into everyday life, making him a sought-after meditation teacher, conference speaker, and seminar leader, having addressed audiences at the UN General Assembly, TEDx Maui, and Oprah Winfrey's Super Soul Sunday.

Tommy Discusses:

  • Why we succumb to addiction
  • How to live fully beyond addiction
  • The subtle layers of addiction recovery
  • How thoughts can change the trajectory of your life
  • The energy of conscious thinking

17 Sep 202484. How Can I Maintain Healthy Boundaries While Being of Service in Recovery?00:37:27

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re joined by Mariana, who brings us an impactful inquiry: How Can I Maintain Healthy Boundaries While Being of Service in Recovery?

We often read in spiritual scriptures that we are meant to give without expectation. Yet, as humans in relationships, we recognize that boundaries are essential, especially in recovery.

Spiritual and religious teachings often compare service to an express train for personal and spiritual growth. While giving and serving are fundamental aspects of recovery, it’s important to understand that setting healthy boundaries not only prevents burnout but also allows us to continue giving sustainably.

I often say that ‘service is where the action is’, but what does it truly mean to be of service? How can we differentiate between serving authentically and serving in a codependent way?

In this episode, we’ll dive deep into what it means to be of service and explore how to help others without giving too much of yourself away.

Tommy Discusses:

  • Being of service in the present moment
  • Giving from a place of wholeness and authenticity without losing yourself
  • Creating healthy boundaries
  • What it truly means to be of service
  • Helping others while letting go of the outcome

26 Mar 202459. What Am I Risking By Not Facing My Trauma And Pain?00:37:41

In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Ron who brings a courageous and important inquiry to our community: What am I risking by not facing my trauma and pain?

Having lost his son due to a skiing accident eight years ago, Ron has firsthand experience navigating through intense grief and loss. I think we are all intuitively aware that something negative will occur if we do not face the emotional challenges of our lives. Yet we rarely ask ourselves, what exactly am I giving up if I don't face it?

On the surface, this will seem like a tragic story, but something quite extraordinary has taken place. I want to share my gratitude for this inquiry and for bringing such a delicate and important matter to the table.

Tommy discusses

  • Why we need to face our grief head-on
  • A better way of dealing with grief and loss
  • The link between spirituality and longevity
  • Can we continue thriving after losing a loved one?
  • How can we make better choices with our pain?

28 May 202468. How Can I Finally Be Free From the Frequency Of Addiction?00:32:34

In this episode of In the Circle, we are joined by Jamie who inquires: How can I finally be free from the frequency of addiction?  Jamie expresses that he has just celebrated five years of recovery, yet he feels that recovery should be easier by now.

What will finally set us free? How can we truly surrender and let go of the frequency of addiction? There isn't just one path to freedom; it varies for everyone. The steps and yoga are practices to help us live more skillfully and truthfully.

Letting go is not about effort but about realizing the irrelevance of what no longer serves us. This journey is about reorienting yourself towards truth and surrendering to what is real, allowing you to let go and move forward.

This episode is for anyone feeling stuck in their recovery journey and looking for ways to break free and reach a higher level of liberation.

Tommy discusses

  • Letting go of what you think you are
  • Breaking out of the frequency of addiction
  • Why the path to freedom is different for everyone
  • What does it mean to find your truth?
  • You are not your addiction

30 Jan 202451. What Is Love?00:33:12

In this episode of In the Circle, we're going to speak about LOVE! What is love? How can we relate to it? Is there a way to cultivate it or connect with it?

Love is often confused with excitement, romance, or dependency. Love is not something that depends upon anyone else's opinion, approval, history, or mindset. Love exists as an energy in the universe. And everyone can tap into true love.

The presence within you, the spirit within you, the life force within you is pure love, even if, right now, you don’t know it.

Tommy discusses

  • The challenge of self-love in recovery
  • How to overcome the fear of love
  • Frequent misconceptions about what love is
  • Why we must challenge our conventional notions about love
  • The true meaning of love

30 Jul 202477. How Can I Remain Spiritual During Times Of War And Conflict?00:22:21

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Elizabeth, who brings an incredibly powerful inquiry: How Can I Remain Spiritual During Troubling Times?

So many people I speak with are feeling lost, sad, depressed, or despairing in the face of the world's difficulties. Of course, it doesn’t help that we are attached to devices that inform us endlessly of other people's challenges.

This inquiry gives us a moment to explore the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Through this, we can develop a strategy for managing the myriad of challenges that the people of the world are facing.

Tommy discusses

  • The danger of the news
  • Accept the things you cannot change
  • We are all spiritual beings
  • There is more light than darkness in the world

Addiction is part of everyone’s...

14 Nov 202340. Is Addiction A Disease?01:12:58

In this episode of In The Circle, I delve into the complex and often debated topic: Is addiction a disease? We explore how society interprets addiction and the implications these interpretations have on treatment approaches. What are the motivations behind defining addiction as a disease? If addiction isn't seen as a disease, how do we understand and “fix” it?

We also take a look at the characterization of addiction as a disease of the brain and nervous system, focusing on remission rather than cure. This has led to an increased reliance on pharmacological treatments in addiction recovery. While these are important tools and can be effective for short-term withdrawal relief, their prolonged use might lead to additional dependencies and impede full emotional and mental recovery.

The holistic approach to recovery is still, in my opinion, the best and most effective long-term recovery plan—by taking abstinence-based approaches and following the transformative power of 12-step programs, yoga, meditation, and breathwork.

Tommy discusses

  • Whether or not addiction is a disease
  • The effects of prolonged use of addiction medications
  • Are we treating the symptom or the root of addiction?
  • Why does humankind fall for addictive substances?
  • Why the holistic approach to addiction recovery is the most effective

31 Oct 202338. How Can Families Truly Understand the Nature of Alcoholism and Addiction?00:42:12

On this episode of In the Circle, I go deep into the intricate web of family dynamics and the often misunderstood concept of addiction. With Lynn bringing forth a compelling inquiry about helping families grasp the true nature of alcoholism, it’s important to remember that addiction is not an isolated issue, but something that families experience together.

This conversation shines a light on the profound revelation that addiction originates from trauma and is deeply rooted in codependency. I believe that while addiction might be a universal human experience, the journey to recovery is not. Many belief systems can keep us trapped in the cycle of addiction. Yet, when families embark on the recovery journey together, the results are extraordinary.

In the midst of a mental health crisis, remember that no one has to walk the path to healing alone. Find solace, understanding, and a community that resonates with your journey. There's always a way forward. Stay connected, ask for help, and believe that breakthroughs can, and do, exist.

Tommy discusses:

  • How to navigate family dynamics during recovery

  • Why addiction is a human experience, yet recovery is not

  • Why addiction is deeply rooted in codependency, trauma, and relationships

  • The reason we need to be open and vulnerable with our families

  • The value of experiencing recovery meetings firsthand

21 May 202467. How Can I Break Away From Victimhood?00:30:50

In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Sam, who brings our attention to an addiction that we don't often consider, the addiction to the struggle itself. Sam inquires: How Can I Break Away From Victimhood?

Most of us can look back and, if we’re self-conscious human beings, notice some patterns repeating themselves, holding us back. The most common being self-sabotage.

This brings up a powerful psychological and spiritual discussion about how we can move out of victimhood. How can we overcome our resistance to the next level? What do we need to do to move into empowerment and personal mastery?

Well, it just so happens that the ancient yogis had an answer to this. The sages had an answer to this, the seers, the seekers had an answer to this, and they wrote it down in some powerful scriptures, and we're going to learn from those lessons today about how to move from victimhood to mastery.

Tommy discusses

  • How to move out of victimhood to mastery
  • Falling in love with yourself
  • Why we are our own worst enemies
  • The Gift of Morning Practice (Sadhana)
  • The true path of discovery in recovery

In this episode of In the Circle, we dive into a compelling discussion with Patrick, a dedicated individual in long-term recovery, who inquires: Should Purpose Guide Your Path When Helping Others?

Patrick is at a crossroads in his service journey as he questions whether to pursue a conventional counseling career or continue his grassroots efforts of directly assisting people on the streets of San Francisco. Our discussion opens up a broader exploration of what it means to follow one's "Dharma," or true purpose, in the realm of service and recovery.

This is a powerful reminder that true service comes from the heart, driven by a genuine desire to help others and make a difference.

Tommy discusses

  • Are you following your Dharma?

  • How you can make a difference in someone's life

25 Jun 202472. Can I Change My Personality?00:27:44

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Brian asks an incredibly profound question: Can a person change their personality? He goes on to explain that the origin of his inquiry is due to his use of sarcasm and how he does not want to speak in that same tone with that same sharpness, especially to those he loves.

As someone who grew up in New York City, I'm well-trained in sarcasm, and this inquiry hit home for me.

This naturally leads us to a powerful discussion about the nature of personality and whether we can change our deeply ingrained patterns, or if we are set in our ways forever.

Tommy discusses

  • Can you change your personality?
  • The power of your words
  • How to change your mind with morning practice
  • The origins of sarcasm and upgrading your language

04 Jun 202469. How Can I Let Go Of Relationships That No Longer Serve Me?00:25:28

In this episode of In the Circle, Today, we'll hear an inquiry from Carla, who asks an important question regarding friendship and letting go: How do I release the ties of a long-term friendship that has become codependent? How can I let go of relationships that no longer serve me?

This inquiry takes us into this realm of relationships, reminding us that friendships, connections, business partnerships, and romantic relationships all have the potential to become codependent if we try to control or place someone else's needs inappropriately before our own.

As we delve into this topic, we're looking at shifting from blame and complaint to a place of self-reflection and growth. It's important to remember, you always have a choice, letting go of a friendship that no longer serves our well-being can be an act of self-care and liberation for all involved parties.

Tommy discusses

  • The difference between codependency and interdependency

  • What is true forgiveness?

  • You have a choice

  • The importance of trusting your gut

  • Outgrowing people on the Path of Recovery

09 May 202314. Getting Your Spark Back in Recovery00:36:48

Welcome back to In The Circle. It is always such a blessing to sit and explore with you all. Today, we check in with Damon, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community. He asks a deeply revealing question about taking the next step – a bounding leap – in his recovery… I've been sober for a while and have lost my passion. How can I get the fire back?

This is such an important inquiry, one which asks us to look more closely at the reasons we got sober in the first place, and at what is required to continue to walk the path when fear and desperation, which inspired us to change, have since faded away. This exploration is all about the why behind anything that we do, and it is therefore quite relevant to each of us.

Tommy discusses:

  • Receiving the gift of desperation
  • Healing the ego
  • Exploring the more subtle levels of detox
  • Dedicating oneself to greater purpose
  • Finding joy in the subtle

27 Jun 202320. How Can I Help a Young Adult Dealing With Depression?00:42:37

On today's episode of In The Circle, we are going to explore a heartfelt inquiry from Shannon who is asking… How can I help a young adult dealing with depression? In this day and age, we find ourselves in a mental health crisis. So it makes perfect sense that this inquiry would come up at this time.

Everyone is facing challenges as the mainstream world becomes more complex, more disconnected, and more toxic. Kids, and young adults especially, are living in a stressed out world and spending way too much time on screens, which are keeping them even more disconnected from their surroundings, from nature, and certainly not helping them to live better lives.

We spend today’s episode looking at depression from some alternative perspectives and hope to provide new viewpoints.

If you or anyone you know is dealing with serious depression or suicidal ideation, please seek the support of a medical professional. This podcast is not intended in any way to replace or contradict advice from medical professionals.

Tommy discusses:

• Impossibility of identifying the source of depression

• Measuring the appropriate expression of grief and loss

• Depression’s guttural scream

• Untangling the stories we tell ourselves

• Looking at depression from a different angle

• Repression, suppression, depression

• Why we should sing and dance to heal

• Considering diet, hydration, and clean energy

25 Jul 202324. Why is Yoga Important in Recovery?00:34:29

Today, on In The Circle, we have the pleasure of discussing the role of yoga in recovery and how we can overcome people's innate resistance to the practice. Chris asks… If freedom from addiction is possible, and yoga's the medicine, how then do we make this medicine more accessible?

This is such an important episode because there really is no one left on the planet unaffected by addiction. You either experience it yourself or someone you love is going through it. And if you really want to take your recovery all the way, yoga is going to be a part of it.

Let's come to understand both yoga and recovery from a much broader perspective and see what's waiting for the person in recovery who embraces both paths.

Tommy discusses:

• Chris asks about the preconceived notions around yoga

• Defining yoga as calming the mind

• Breaking barriers of culture, region, and language

• Can a devout Christian practice yoga in alignment with their beliefs?

• Moving toward your own truth

• Bringing yogic practices in our recovery work

30 Apr 202464. How Can I Learn To Forgive Myself?00:37:20

In this episode of In the Circle, we're honored to have Mark join us from Northern England, bringing a profound topic that touches the core of many recovery journeys: self-forgiveness and building genuine self-confidence. Mark inquires: How can I learn to forgive myself and be confident in my self-worth?

For those of us in recovery, particularly during the early stages, the act of forgiving ourselves can seem monumental. This inability to forgive often leaves us trapped in a cycle of persistent low self-esteem. Understanding and resolving these feelings is a crucial step on the path to recovery.

It's an essential conversation for anyone struggling with guilt or shame and for those seeking insight into their journey towards healing.

Tommy discusses

  • How can I forgive myself?
  • Finding connection and love within yourself
  • “Borrowing” confidence from those who love you
  • The frequency of gambling addiction
  • Living life from the inside, out

01 Aug 202325. Are the 12 Steps Still Relevant Today?00:45:35

This episode of In The Circle takes a deep dive into a very important and relevant inquiry from Michael, who is asking about the 12 Steps—Are the 12 Steps still relevant today, how do they fit into modern recovery, and why did I adapt the 12 Steps into the 12 Efforts?

Of course, when we explore these questions, we will need to discuss the challenges that come up with language and the power of words. Do people in recovery always have to refer to themselves as addicts or should that identification change?

In a way, this exploration is fundamental to all who are on the path to recovery. We need to know what works, why it works, and how it can work better. We must always strive to honor the past, but we must also innovate and improve upon what is there to create an even brighter future.

Tommy discusses:
  • How language gets in the way of our growth
  • The ties between yoga and the 12 Steps
  • How to embrace your past and overcome resentments
  • Why he created the 12 Efforts
  • Readying yourself to be of service to other people
  • Why he is proud to be a part of “The Island of Misfit Toys”

20 Aug 202480. What is the Difference Between Being Introverted and Isolating?00:30:41

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we have Kathy bringing a very unique yet relevant inquiry that requires a bit of unpacking. Kathy inquires: what is the difference between being an introvert and isolating?

Kathy wrote to us and said, “I usually hear that human beings are hardwired for connection and that we are social creatures. I do not believe it to be true for every human being - it isn’t true for me.”

As we go down the path of this inquiry, we'll learn that Kathy has been introverted most of her life and that her family was not necessarily comfortable with that.

We explore what it means to find solitude, the importance of cultivating a relationship with oneself, and how that relationship compares in importance and in necessity with the relationships with those around us.

This inquiry brings up a lot of questions about the difference between being an introvert and self-isolation.

Tommy Discusses:

  • Is aloneness a bad thing?
  • The disease of the lost self
  • Consciousness is contagious
  • Are our cell phones keeping us from healing?
  • The antidote to loneliness

04 Apr 20239. How Can I Process A Lost Relationship?00:40:22

Today on In The Circle, we field a heartfelt and powerful inquiry about relationships from Jeff, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community. He asks… What do we do when people in our lives exit, whether by separation, or disagreement, or death?

This question cuts to the core of our shared experience as mortal human beings. The nature of our relationships with one another dictates that they end – somehow, some way. But why tie negative feelings and words to something so inevitable?

More than death as a means of losing someone, Jeff’s inquiry brings up the idea of lost relationships, both romantic and social – leading us to acknowledge the last few years as being especially turbulent in this area.

Ultimately, we find ourselves arriving face to face with the most important relationship, the one with our true self.

Tommy discusses:

• What happens when you lose someone close to you?

• How does the catalyst for such a change impact the process?

• Reflecting on the meaning of connection

• Honoring the shifting nature of relationships

• Navigating change with integrity and strength
