In my Imperfect Marketing Briefs, we learn about companies that either got marketing really right or really wrong!

In this episode, I discuss the KFC UK campaign launched in February 2020. They highlighted their Finger Licking Good slogan worldwide as COVID-19 became a pandemic.

KFC acted swiftly and pulled the campaign. Their advertising agency and PR agency worked together to rescue the situation by adding disclaimers, caution signs, and even blurring out the tagline.

This was a unique situation for KFC, but they handled it well!

It has been said that Colgate branched out and made frozen dinners several decades ago. Now, no one seems to have proof either way, but Colgate Lasagna provides an interesting discussion on branding.

When you have a brand as strong as Colgate, expanding may not be a good idea—unless it makes sense to people. We all put advertising and communications through a bologna filter in our minds. If it doesn't fit or isn't believable, then we won't believe it.

When you hear the phrase Colgate Lasagna, you may be able to taste the toothpaste in your mouth. Not exactly the reaction people look for! Do you have any brand extensions that have gone wrong?

In my Imperfect Marketing Briefs, we learn about companies that either got marketing really right or really wrong.

In this episode, I discuss the debacle that Marketo ran into when they didn't renew their domain. 

It wasn't pretty.

A good samaritan went out and helped them by protecting their domain, but things could have gone a lot worse.

Now, most small businesses have a different issue and that is fake letters telling you to renew through them and then you have to transfer your domain over to them. It's crazy and I have had a few clients fall for it in the past. 

 The main thing is to know where your domain is registered and keep it current and paid.

Did you see in 2021, on International Women's Day, that Burger King tweeted that "Women Belong in the Kitchen?"

They were trying to communicate that they were launching their scholarship program and wanted to encourage their female employees to follow their culinary dreams.

Great program, but...a bit too creative in its execution.

While most people didn't get to the following clarifying tweets in the series, even the ones that did felt it was a bit tone-deaf.

Creativity is great, but be careful and don't overdo it!

It's June, so I felt I needed to address and mention something I thought we learned by now, but that you must be authentic in your support of months and holidays.

Think of Pride Month and Juneteenth.

Walmart did it wrong, and so did Burger King, but Kate Spade and Macy's have headed in the right direction.

Before you post a rainbow flag or a social post about honoring and celebrating Juneteenth, pause to think about how you genuinely support those communities.

Think before posting, and do not ever just check a box!

What are you willing to do for your brand?

Welcome back, and thank you for tuning into another Imperfect Marketing Brief! These shorter episodes focus on helping you learn from other's mistakes and do better marketing.

A friend of mine recently shared that she lip-synced in reels on her Instagram account. They got great engagement BUT offended some of her regular followers.

Why?

She followed trends that did not fit her brand. Since then, she removed the reels and has decided to stay true to herself, even if it costs her some business in the short run.

WOW!

That is so powerful. I LOVE that she has taken that stand, and I encourage you to do the same. First, define who you are and what your brand represents, then stay true to yourself.

If that means lip-syncing on TikTok, that's awesome, but it's also okay if it doesn't.

Build your brand and stay true to it!

Welcome back to Imperfect Marketing! Today I answered a question that I was asked on social media: “How do I send an opt-in email to people I want to add to my list?”

The answer is that you don’t—at least not through your email marketing provider.

I recommend handling these as one-offs rather than one large email. Keep your emails personal and relevant, and do your best to offer value to each of your targets. Avoid sending bulk email! You don’t want more email; I don’t want more email.

And yet…I sign up for email lists all the time!

Why?

I want the value they can give me. So, if you invite someone to your email list, add value.

So, if you are going to invite them to your email list, give them value.

I suggested she do something like:

Dear NAME:

I met you back in XXXX at the XXXXX event. I miss getting together with everyone and was just thinking about all the great information that was shared.

I started to think about how long it has been since we connected and wanted to reach out and share my new 30 Days of Social Post Ideas to keep your followers engaged. I have found that so many people are struggling with what to post and I wanted to see if it would be something you would be interested in.

If you are, just reply back and I will see that you get it.

Google and Facebook have built huge empires just based on information.

You can get information about your email subscribers in many different ways.

  • Surveys- ask questions that you want to know the answers to. Use it as market research.
  • Ask your email subscribers to update their profiles.
  • Buttons in the email asking them about their interest in different types of information.
  • Inside Constant Contact, you can create click segmentation lists and reach out to people based on their interests.
  • Emails asking for more information. If you have a small list, ask for feedback.

Why do you want more information?

Well, knowledge is power. I have seen that over and over again in my career, from the corporate world to working with my clients.

However, in the world of email marketing and content marketing, it gives you insight into your target audiences and the ability to segment your audience and provide them with content they want and need that is relevant and timely for their personal life or their business.

The more you know, the better content you can create, and the more they will know, like, and trust you.

The more they know, like, and trust you, the more business you can do with them because they will want to buy from you.

Throughout my career, the main focus has always been on reaching our audience where they are and creating content that would entice them to buy, make them feel good about their purchase, or even just so they saw our name. It's about staying top of mind.

Most people start out in marketing with tactics, and it should be driven by your goals and strategy. Your goals define your strategy, and your tactics should come from there.

Now, if your goal is to engage your audience, you need their attention, right? One way to get their attention is to provide them with content that resonates with them.

Have you ever driven down the road and seen a billboard and started nodding your head? Or seen a commercial that really spoke to you?

I always reference the 1 800 Contacts Commercial. Most of you won't know, but I have always had really bad vision. I had vision correction surgery and now just wear glasses to read and see the computer, but I can walk down the hall and everything.

Yep. I couldn't always see to walk down the hall. My contact prescription was worse than a -16!

Anyway, with vision that bad, I had special eyes, and years later, I still remember this commercial.

First, you really want to understand your target audience. I am a broken record with this statement, it's true!

What else can you do?

  1. If they sign up for your emails or a downloadable, be sure to send a welcome email that thanks them for opting in and letting them know what they will be receiving from you.
  2. Be sure to get to the point. Keep paragraphs short and easy to read. Make sure you have calls to action or the main point before they have to scroll. Back in the olden days, we called it above the fold when we were working with newspapers, but now it's all about above the scroll. (this goes for your website and your emails)
  3. Make sure your subject line or headline breaks through and intrigues people but is also easy to digest.
  4. Use video. People love to interact with videos, and we all read so much. It's important to keep your message digestible, and if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a heck of a lot more.

09 Aug 2022Episode 25 Brief: Why do your emails go to spam and what to do about it!00:11:01

One of the reasons people tell me that they don't have an email newsletter or don't use email marketing is that they don't want to send spam.

A spam email is any unsolicited email usually sent out in bulk and is irrelevant, annoying, and sometimes malicious.

However, those of us who send out email marketing know that we aren't spammers! Instead, we send emails that add VALUE to our subscribers. Our emails contain information they need and could benefit from.

Despite these intentions, a valuable email might get sent straight to the spam folder instead of the recipient's inbox. So, let's discuss why your email might get caught in spam filters—and how you can change this!

#1 Email Authentication

Email authentication is the most significant and easiest issue to fix. I am not techy—even though I love software solutions that make my life easier—but I have made it to the point where I can troubleshoot my client's emails and ensure they are making it to the inbox.

For example, if you are using an email service provider like Constant Contact or ConvertKit—both of which I recommend—you can add DKIM keys. So what's a DKIM Key? I define them as a magic code that tells your recipients' email provider that they are getting an actual email from you and that it isn't spoofing.

#2 Your content is setting off spam flags everywhere

  • Keep an eye out for spam trigger words. These words feel sleazy, needy, manipulative, and far-fetched. Avoid using words or phrases like Urgent, Don't Delete, Free Money, Lose Weight, Billions, and Help!
  • Look through the spam emails in your junk folder. Notice that many of them are riddled with spelling and grammar errors.
  • I understand you're excited about your content, but monitor how many exclamation points you use. The occasional exclamation point won't hurt, but don't overdo it!
  • Be mindful when you use big fonts and flashy colors.
  • Don't use a URL shortener. Spammers love them.
  • Avoid image-only emails. It's just a best practice.
  • Make sure your email size is reasonable. If it is too big, it won't get delivered. Yes, this includes the image and attachment sizes.
  • Always include an unsubscribe link. Yes, you've worked hard to find subscribers, but they have the freedom to unsubscribe when they want.

#3 Not having a custom domain

Your "from" email address is crucial! AOL and Yahoo emails get caught in spam filters more often than others.

#4 People reporting your emails as spam.

Be careful when adding people to your email list. Only add people who signed up or gave you explicit permission. This is importan

Thus, a healed femur is a sign that a wounded person must have received help from others. Mead is said to have concluded, “Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts.”

How do you start an email marketing program before you have a website?

It's easier than you think, and the earlier you start email marketing, the better off your business will be.

  1.  Create a "Coming Soon" page and include a form where people can sign up.
  2. Leverage all your collateral, including your email signature, to encourage signups
  3. Ask your existing contacts
  4. Market a lead magnet
  5. Leverage social media

Most email service providers like Constant Contact and Convert Kit will allow you to accomplish this fairly easily. 

So, don't be afraid to get out there and start building your know, like, and trust factor!

Many small business owners in attendance thought they weren't making enough money because of taxes. However, it was really about profitability. So she worked that shift in their mindset and then shared how she could help. It was quite brilliant!

International Podcast Day is September 30th, and in honor of this holiday, I decided to share a bit of my journey in podcasting. In this episode, I share many lessons learned along the way and answer some frequently asked questions.

Did you know this isn't my first podcast? Now, let's not go looking for that first one! It was rough. I didn't enjoy it, didn't promote it, and it was clear I wasn't having fun.

    I recommend saving your ad dollars for other things that will result in conversions or longer connections.

  • Is podcasting a lot of work?
    I can definitely do more than I do, but currently, I spend about 3 hours on my interview episodes and about an hour on my Imperfect Marketing briefs. I could still invest more time in planning.

Doesn't that sound amazing?!

Well—I believe it is. If you believe in yourself and know your gifts, people take notice. When you accept yourself, you exude peaceful confidence, which is just one of the MANY things Jen and I discussed during this Imperfect Marketing episode.

We also discussed our desire to serve others—if you've been around for a minute, you already know that's why I started my company! I strive to serve others and add value to my clients every day.

Speaking with Jen was amazing! I especially respect her vulnerability in sharing her experience of being forced to rebuild her social media and starting from scratch. For those who don't know, Jen lost access to ALL her social accounts—along with the connections and community she spent years building.

We forget how much each new person who follows us means in the beginning, and Jen's experience of getting knocked back to square one was heartbreaking but powerful. In her words, she was a "phoenix rising in modern-day."

If you're just starting this crazy marketing journey, remember this: you cannot compare your beginning to somebody else's middle.

Welcome back to another episode of Imperfect Marketing! In today's brief, we will be talking about two things you should be working on right now.

First, we will talk about the increasing interest rates—which is good for your marketing. Then we'll discuss engagement and how important that is for you.

Interest Rates

So, let's start with why rising interest rates are good for you. I was listening to a podcast—I can't remember which one—but they said that the market is going to get less competitive as big businesses cut back.

AWESOME!

I love this point, and it is so true. Having worked in big business before, I know from experience that larger companies tend to go a bit into survival mode and start cutting back.

What does that mean for you? Well, the ads you run, the content you create, and all of your marketing will have less competition.

When I worked at Burns & Wilcox, since it was family-owned, the CEO invested in marketing when everyone else was pulling back, and he won a ton of market share for the company that the others who cut back were never able to reclaim.

It's a different perspective, but it is totally true.

So, how can you start increasing your marketing efforts to break through better and build your market share or niche?

Engagement

Next up is engagement. Engagement is the key to everything!

I do love growing my email list, but I only want to add engaged subscribers. An engaged subscriber will reply to my email, download the images, click on a link, file it to read later, OR even unsubscribe.

I want them to DO SOMETHING and interact with the email I sent—anything will do.

This is one of the things that will keep your email in the inbox. Email service providers (ESPs) have become smarter and more attuned to the content recipients want in their inboxes.

A clean list is a must for getting your emails delivered to your subscribers' inboxes. ESPs are digging deep into the emails you're sending and the engagement recipients are having with those messages.

How do you do this?

It's called List Hygiene. If you are not cleaning your list regularly, you are doing yourself a disservice. Help your audience see your emails and get your message by cleaning up your list regularly!

Today we will continue our discussion of list hygiene and the things you need to keep a clean list.

Step One: Remove all your bounced emails that are no longer valid.

Each time you send an email, you get a bounce report. Sometimes it is a temporary bounce, but other times it is permanent.

Constant Contact, for example, will give you a report of bounces they recommend for removal, and then you can delete them. It's a great way to keep your list clean of bad email addresses.

While they won't receive your emails anymore, removing bounced addresses will show the email service providers you care about your list and are keeping it clean.

Step Two: Monitor your engagement group every 120 days

Now, 120 days equals four months for those who don't want to do the math! So three times a year, I want you all to look and identify subscribers who have not interacted with any of your emails. Then, send them an email to let them know that you will remove them unless they interact with this email.

It's important!

Step Three: Ensure you include a way to engage with your emails.

I recently worked with someone who put all their content directly in their email. They didn't include links to a blog post or other content. There was nowhere for people to click, and the imagery is light because people engage more with plainer emails.

We do ask questions in the email, but that's the best way for us to try and drive engagement. People can only engage with your emails if you provide an opportunity for them to do so.

So, think about how you will have people engage with your emails.

Step Four: Change your perspective.

We have been pressured to build big, huge email lists for so long—but I want you to track things other than your email list size. I want you to track engagement. I covered this topic in depth in a previous Imperfect Marketing Brief, so check it out if you want to learn more.

How many clicks are you getting? How many replies do you receive? That's what is important!

So, how can you change your perspective?

I was listening to another podcast, and they said we don't change our personality when we go to work. I genuinely believe that! That's why I named my first company H2H Consulting. There was B2B and B2C marketing, but we are all just people, so H2H stands for Human to Human.

Again, your personality doesn't change. Think about how you can create experiences for your readers, whether you are B2B or B2C.

We are headed into a crazy busy holiday time. I get it; we don't have much time to stop, smell the roses, look around, and create a strategic plan.

Large companies started their 2023 plans at least a month ago and are probably already creating budgets to submit for their marketing plans.

I know it feels like you don't have time to dedicate to planning your 2023; however, I will explain how plans save you time and money.

If you have a plan and know your goals, you can be focused and not driven off track by a new shiny object. This advice comes from the queen (me) of shiny object syndrome.

Every business needs a plan, and I would guess that most large companies' departments also need marketing plans.

First, start with your goals. Annual or quarterly goals work. I prefer to set quarterly goals that support my annual or BHAGs that might even be further off.

Then, you need to define your target audience. This is KEY. Do NOT skip this part!

I add the most value to high-touch business-to-business service businesses and nonprofits. That's a passion point for me, and I get fueled by making a difference for them.

Where does your target audience spend their time online? Where do they hang out? Are there conferences they attend? What are the most significant issues they are facing right now?

You need to know these answers before you get into the next step, which is building tactics to meet the goals you set in places where your target audience is.

Here are a few examples:

Goal #1: Increase sales by X%

Strategy: Get more repeat business from existing customers.

How do you accomplish this?

Focus on existing customers! Advertising in the newspaper probably doesn't make much sense, right? So, don't take an impersonal route. Instead, focus on handwritten thank you notes, 1:1 meetings, direct mail pieces, etc.

Goal #2: Get X speaking engagements for conferences with more than 200 attendees

Tactics: research the conferences your target audience attends and organize this information into a calendar. Then, contact the organization about applying to speak about 10 months before the conference.

Build a section on your website that highlights yourself as a speaker and include a request form so you can be invited to speak.

Goal #3: Grow my email list by X

I would challenge you to focus on growing engagement rates, but growing your list is also beneficial. Accomplishing this will involve promotion on social media, a promotion at your speaking gigs, creating a lead magnet, etc.

A complete marketing plan will have a SWOT analysis

I know you're at least familiar with hearing the words strategy and tactics applied to marketing—but what do they mean? And which comes first? Well, you're in the right place because today's Brief answers these questions!

Strategy and Tactics

Everyone says you should start with strategy, but 90% of them jump straight to tactics—which I don't recommend. Instead, create a strategy first and let it guide your tactics.

Is your strategy to improve your performance on social media? Your tactics are what will help you accomplish that strategy. For example, it might be determining your social media channels, content pillars, etc.

Your goals fall under your strategy; the rest is how you plan to achieve them. That's your strategy. Your tactics include your projects and initiatives.

Let's say your goal is to increase business with your existing customers. One tactic to support this strategy could be sending out three physical direct mail pieces yearly. Another tactic could be writing five handwritten thank-you notes a week.

I want you to take a moment and think about YOUR strategy. Where are you heading? How do you plan to get there?

Once you have completed this step, you can decide your tactics. Identify how many social media channels you will be on, how many times a week you will post, and what your content pillars will be.

But how do I start?

Start with your vision! Why did you create your business? Why do you do what you do?

I know this is a big question, and if you need a visual, I am a HUGE fan of Simon Sinek and his golden circle. However, if you're unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, check the show notes for that video—it's AWESOME!

The key is to think on a large scale; make sure you select long-term and big goals. This should be where you want to get in 3 or 5 years, not by December this year.
 
What fuels you?

Personally, I love making an impact. I am also fueled by helping small businesses and solopreneurs who work in high-touch service businesses grow through focused marketing efforts.

This podcast is one way I help! First, I provide the information within the episode and introduce people to my guests' unique insights. Then I invite people to my email list by offering a freebie or downloadable in the show notes.

A blog is one of the most powerful pieces of content you can create. When done right, it can help feed your email newsletter, build your SEO, and help make creating social media content a TON easier.

Blogs are an oldie but goodie, and while I LOVE trying new things, blogging can be one of the best tried and true techniques you can use!
However, before you dash off to start your new blog page, Orbit Media recently conducted some research. I found it fascinating and wanted to share it with you all; I'll link it in the resources section if you're interested in following along.

Time Commitment

They found that while 80% of bloggers report that their blogs deliver some or strong results, most blogs took 74% more time than they did to write back in 2014.

WOW!

The average time it takes to write a blog post is currently over 4 hours! It was less than 2.5 hours back in 2014. Why?!?
 
Well, this statistic makes sense if you think about it. There is so MUCH content out there that we hold ourselves to a higher standard while writing. Our content needs to stand out to receive traffic from it and engage our target audience.

I also think we are more aware of what we need to deliver. One of my favorite blogging concepts is to create Pillar and cluster content. You write a long, great, robust piece of content and then build some shorter pieces as support.

Their survey also showed that bloggers who spend more than 6 hours on their blogs receive stronger results.

Average Word Count
 
Now that you've invested all this time, how many words are you writing? The average length of a blog post is 1,376 words in 2022—up from 808 words in 2014.

Keep in mind that this average word count is boosted by a small number of bloggers who go big: 12% of respondents say their typical blog post is over 2,000 words!

65% of bloggers say their typical post is between 500 and 1,500 words.

Is Blogging Right For Me?

The short answer is—it depends!

So, what's the biggest challenge for bloggers? You guessed it. TIME! It takes a LOT of time to create and promote content.

Are you already blogging? Should you be blogging?

The answer to both questions depends on your marketing strategy and audience. Are they reading your blogs? Do your blogs offer value?

Next, I want you to think about yourself. Will you micromanage the blog until it takes three months to write 1000 words? Maybe blogging isn't right for you!

My final point is this: do not assume that blogging is automatically good or bad for you. It's all about what your strategy is, what your goal is, your s

I discussed why all businesses needed a marketing plan a few weeks ago. I'll link that episode in the resources section if you need a refresher!

So, what happens if you don't have a marketing plan?

Here are five things you will face if you don't work on that for your business:

1. You won't have a clear direction.

If you are anything like me, your shiny object syndrome will be off the charts! Instead of moving in a straight path towards an end goal, you will try various things that won't necessarily get you from A to B.

2. You will not hit your goals.

You will not hit your goals, partially because you didn't write them down. If I write down a goal, I have an easier time accomplishing the task. It's a way to keep things top of mind and keeps you focused and moving forward.

3. You will waste a lot of time.

This is partly influenced by the lack of clear direction and the shiny object syndrome, but you will waste time. The fastest way between 2 points is a straight line. Unfortunately, you can not draw a straight line if you only have one point!

4. You will change your offerings to meet the current day's goals.

I run into this with clients all the time. For example, I read this email, and this group is saying X. Then someone else asks me if I do Y, so now I am creating a service to handle it. THEN another person comes to me saying they just got a referral to someone outside their target audience—and the new company is bigger and better or belongs to a different industry, and my website doesn't cover it.

Changing to adjust to the flavor of the day will hurt you long-term.

5. Confusing your customers.

Now, This is a big one! You always want to make sure your customers understand exactly what you offer. They can't do that if your offerings are all over the place.

If you have too many messages in the marketplace, they might not know about a new product or service. They might become too confused to dig deeper and find your valuable offerings!

'Tis the season for New Year's Resolutions! One of my big ones this year is working towards creating an Ideal Week with my calendar.

As you may know, I am a HUGE fan of my Full Focus Planner and feel like I need to write poetry about it. It has been such a powerful tool in increasing my productivity!

However, the one piece I never followed or did was completing the "Ideal Week." None of my days were ideal—let alone an entire week.

I didn't even know what themes to put on different days or anything. But, then, I spoke to a fellow Full Focus Planner Fan and power user.

She told me that she fllls out her Ideal Week. She hasn't ever achieved it, but it is something that she strives for.

Wow! I never thought about it that way.

With the new year approaching, I decided to create my Ideal Week and move things around, so my days are themed. That way, I can ultimately become more productive.

I am so excited about my new schedule!

I am confident I will stumble along the way, but I am headed in the right direction.

I recently read The Gap and The Gain: The High Achievers' Guide to Happiness, Confidence, and Success.

Not my usual read, but I heard good things.

Spoiler Alert: I LOVED IT!

It is an excellent book about how to be happy by measuring what you have achieved—while still striving for the ideal.

One of my big takeaways from this book was to switch when I determine my priorities for the day to the evening, not in the morning.

Planning the night before allows me to mentally prepare for the next day and has helped me a ton toward completing my priorities.

I am also choosing to spend my time at the end of the year embracing the GAIN, not the GAP. I have accomplished so much this year. Of course, I have yet to achieve all my goals, but I am much further toward them than when I started the year.

I can't wait to see what I accomplish in 2023.

It's that time of year, and hopefully, you have been setting goals for 2023—but, it's not too late to start!

I recently met with a client, and we were starting their 2023 planning, and I asked them what their goals are for the year.

They responded with a question that I get all the time. "You mean my marketing goals?"

My response was to say, no, I mean the business goals.

Your business goals should drive your marketing efforts. If your marketing isn't supporting your overall business goals, then what's the point?

I love setting 7-10 goals that are both personal and business related. They are SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based).

  3. They aren't consistent. Sometimes it is about time, and other times it's just about not having any idea where to start. So, schedule your time and ideas and build a calendar that you can deliver on.

  4. Benchmark your competition or those who have a similar audience.

In this episode of Imperfect Marketing, I had the honor of speaking with a Digital Nomad, Jason Barnard.

Jason is not just a digital marketing expert; he has been a cartoon blue dog and is a musician with the double bass as his specialty. When we recorded, I got a chance to look around his music room, and it was pretty cool to see all of his instruments.

Basically, we talked about the importance of Google SERPs or Search Engine Result Pages for YOU and your business or organization. 

Two big takeaways:

  • Educate Google and give them a consistent message about who you are.
  • Think about the customer experience. Google is sending their customers to you; if they have a good experience, they will send them back. If they don't, they won't.

The thought process of Google sending me their customers in search totally blew my mind. I never really thought about it that way.

So many of my customers ask, "how do we rank on page 1? What do we need to do?"

But suppose you flip your thinking to the problem you solve and instead focus on adding value for the visitors that Google sends you. In that case, it takes you further away from games and more toward what you should be thinking about—creating a great user experience for the visitors that come to your site, from Google or anywhere.

The key takeaway for me?

Don't try and do it all at once. You will get overwhelmed—trust me, I've been there! Select a day to review the content and then several (different) days to make the adjustments.

Welcome back to Imperfect Marketing! This episode with Lorraine Ball is truly chock full of tips, ideas, and insights that I am sure will help you and your marketing. It's time to build landing pages that convert!

Here are a few of the things that we discussed:

  • Landing pages should be about one (1) topic.
  • The word on the button you have makes a difference.
  • Use bright colors on your buttons so they stand out.
  • TEST! Don't just set it and forget it.

Another piece of our conversation revolved around your website.

Do people know what you do when they get to your website?

The thing to keep in mind, and I feel like a broken record, is that they don't care about you. They have a problem and want to know if you can fix it. So, help them out and answer their questions upfront.

She issued a challenge to you all, too: print out 2-3 pages of your website. Then, grab a red pen and a blue pen. If you see first-person words like I, we, my, our, us, etc., circle them in red. When you see words like you, and your, circle them in blue.

You should have two blues for each red. If you don't, then you need to start re-writing your website. People want to feel like the copy is written directly to them, and doing so can help you build landing pages that convert.

Then, we did jump over to talking about target audiences.

(One of my favorite topics!)

So many people are scared to narrow down their target audience, and I think Lorraine said it well when she said, "Who you market to is not necessarily who you sell to."

There is a difference between where you spend your marketing time and effort and who you accept business from.

I think that's a great way to look at it!

I'm thinking of a girl sitting at home alone, birthday signs and streamers around, sad and lonely in a fluffy pink dress. (I don’t know why, but the fluffy pink dress is always there!) She's waiting for people to show up to her party—but no one is coming.

I feel for her! I was very awkward growing up (and still am!) and am a self-professed "geek” or “nerd” who loves school and learning. Lucky for me, that’s cooler now that I am older!

But, going back to my earlier story, no one came to the party.

I hear you asking, "Kendra, what does this have to do with marketing?!"

I'm getting to that! I like to think of webinars as parties, and you are inviting people to come to join you.

You don’t want to be the lonely girl sitting on the couch hoping that people show up, do you?

That’s why email marketing is SO important.

So, how do you use email marketing to get people to your webinar?  Let’s start with your audience. Hopefully, you know who they are and what they want.

Not what they need, but what they want. That’s going to play a big role in this.

If you have created your webinar and know your audience will love it, you need to start communicating it. I want you to draft your email with a BIG Call to Action that stands out and is above the scroll. It’s essential that people can register easily on a mobile device.

Then, I want you to work on your subject line. Test a question, test one with their first name in it, or even an emoji.

Make sure you preview your email on a mobile device.

For online webinars, I send out invites starting a week before the webinar and providing multiple options. You don’t want to send too far in advance or too close to the event, or you will lose people.

Most organizations send about two weeks in advance and then do a 1 week-away reminder and a last-chance email.

Some fun tips for what to include in your email are:

  • What’s going to be covered?
  • What can they expect to learn?
  • What transformation will they get by attending?
  • Include a sneak peek video into some of the content or the presenter or the importance of the topic!

I like to offer a show-up live bonus so that people don’t just plan to watch the recording. Not enough people watch the recording.

Then, of course, there are the reminders. I like to send a confirmation when they register, a 24-hour away message, and a 1 hour or 30-minute reminder.

You should spend almost as much time on your email invitation and follow-up series as you do with your webinar.

Welcome back to another Imperfect Marketing Brief! I hope you're ready to answer a CRUCIAL question: to GIF or not to GIF.

Now, let's take a step back. One of my goals for 2023 was to increase my email engagement by 10% by the end of Q2. I am excited to report that I have already achieved it and am moving into maintenance mode.

So, how did I do it?

GIFs!

It sounds so silly and almost stupid, but GIFs have increased my engagement rate.

I ran a test in January and tested a few things out with some A/B testing on emails and the emails with the GIFs got more clicks, replies, and opens than the ones without.

Pretty impressive, right?

So, should you be using GIFs in your emails?

I would say for almost anyone in almost any business; you can use a GIF. You need to be careful, and I wouldn’t put it in a super serious email, but let people see your personality and get to know you.

So, how do you insert a GIF in an email?

It depends on your email service provider. Google is a great place to start, but if you use Constant Contact or ConvertKit, I can give you some advice.

I recommend starting at giphy.com to find your amazing GIFs.

First, Constant Contact. It’s SUPER easy. Just like you would add any image to an email but instead of uploading, use the tab at the top that says Image URL instead of Library. Then, insert the Share link you copy from giphy.com, press preview, and then insert. You are good to go!

Second, if you are using Convert Kit, it’s also easy but takes one more step.

Once you find the GIF  you want, go to download it. Sometimes you might need to right-click on it and hit "save image as." Save it as a .gif and nothing else or it won’t work.

Then, upload the GIF like you would any other image. Easy peasy!

Welcome back to another episode of Imperfect Marketing! Today’s brief is about making email marketing easier and more personalized.

Have you ever gotten an email and been like…  "WOW! That’s just what I was looking for!"

That’s an amazingly perfect and personalized email—whether they included your name or not.

They know and understand their audience, which is key to ALL marketing, not just email marketing.

So, how do you make this easier? Dig deep and get to know your audience. 

Write every email article to ONE person. That’s all. Just one person. 

You should be able to picture them in your head. Close your eyes right now and visualize your favorite client or the person you want to work with most. 

Pause this episode and think about it.

Then, write to that person. Incorporate their hopes and dreams. Help them deal with what keeps them up at night. Use what you know and focus on that connection. 

It’s a lot easier than you think.

I recently spoke with someone who had 3 different target audiences. That could mean up to 3 unique emails. UGH! 

Luckily there is overlap and some similarities, and what’s different can be easily changed.

So, we used dynamic content inside their email service provider to change out the articles based on the target audience tag on their email profile. 

Okay, I know that was a lot of words, so let's try this:

I'm ordering clothes for my husband online, and guess what—they put jackets on sale! They want to communicate that information and there are 3 ways to do it.

  1. They can send an email announcing that men’s and women’s jackets are on sale. Not bad, it's quick and to the point.
  2. They can send an email that says, "we thought you’d like to know that our men’s jackets are on sale" and they could ALSO reference how it goes with another item I purchased.
  3. They can use my pronouns and send me something completely disconnected from anything I've purchased from them. Oh, and P.S., the women’s jackets are on sale. Deleted folder here we come!


This works with services too. Try sending a different intro paragraph to your referral partners than you send to your prospects and clients.

All of these are excellent options and can make your email marketing more personalized.

I know, I know. I hear you saying that sounds like a lot of work...

I promise you it's a lot less work than you're thinking! Dynamic content is a great tool to leverage and you don’t need to create 3 entirely different emails.

What's a cold email and how do you send them? Great question!

A cold email is just something you send to someone who hasn’t done business with you. You might know them, or you might not.

Pro tip: This type of email should NOT be sent to someone you found on a huge purchased email list.

Instead, send it 1:1 and keep it personalized to the person you are sending it to.

This should be really short. No one reads anymore, and time is valuable. If the person doesn't know you well, odds are they won't invest time in reading a long message.

Crucial cold email info? 

  • establish a connection
  • explain what you are looking for 
  • have a call to action
  • then close

The end.

Short, sweet, and to the point. 

When I send a cold email, I don’t like to send something super salesy. Instead, I ask for help or feedback.

I might be doing some research, or I'll have a new downloadable that I thought they might benefit from and would like feedback.

My cold emails aren’t usually super cold, and I often have a shared acquaintance give an introduction. This could be on LinkedIn, at an event, or from a person at the Chamber or even a friend. 

There are so many ways to make a cold email less cold, but it's critical not to overlook them.

Spring has sprung and the weather is improving here in Michigan where I am recording this episode, which means it's time for spring cleaning!

I know, I know, this podcast is called Imperfect Marketing but hey, spring cleaning is great for a variety of things—including your email list.

So, let’s talk about list hygiene.

Would you rather have an email list of 3,000 people OR a list of a few hundred SUPER engaged subscribers?

Don't get me wrong, a large list does sound amazing, but it all boils down to engagement. All systems keep getting smarter and many will dock your deliverability if you have low engagement rates.

What it boils down to is this: does your list size matter if many of them do not read or look at your emails?

Don’t get me wrong, I do love that email marketing keeps you top of mind whether someone reads an email or not; unfortunately, we do want them opening or looking at some of the emails.

If you don't, email providers like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo will start flagging your emails so they go into spam.

You need to create content that people want to read and engage with, and the more your subscribers engage with your content, the better Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo think of you.

So, how do we do that?

Spring cleaning your list!

Look at your metrics and select anyone who hasn’t engaged with your emails in like 6 months. With Apple pre-opening your emails, you could use “opens” to be more conservative, and it won’t exclude everyone.

Send these subscribers an email to see if it is time to go your separate ways. If they want to stay on your list, have them click a button and take them to a thank you page you create on your website just for that.

Then, pick everyone who didn’t click on that button and remove them from your email list. I usually give it a week or two.

If you want to give people more time, you can separate your email database into two segments. Those who haven’t engaged with your emails and everyone else.

This will allow you to add some copy or pre-header into the version of the email that goes to those who haven’t engaged to see if this is one of the last emails they are going to get from you.

If this is the first time you are doing this, the number of people you remove from your list could be staggering, and it hurts. I know. I've been there!

Why pay for those contacts who aren’t engaging with your content, don’t want it, and won’t buy from you?

A big list doesn’t mean anything without people who are engaged and want to receive content from you.

Her advice on vision boards? Just get started!

Think about everything you want in your life or your business, and get started creating. You could create your vision boards with magazine clippings and posterboard, or be like me and use a PowerPoint slide.

It's up to you!

Email Deliverability is the ability to get your emails to subscribers’ inboxes. Sounds powerful, right?

You don’t want to invest all your time and energy into building your email list....only for your emails to get lost in cyberspace.

So what defines strong deliverability rates? Good email deliverability is 95% or higher and your email system’s deliverability is key to ensuring your emails reach the inbox.

Can I buy email lists?

I have many people every year who are interested in buying email lists and using them in their system. Unfortunately, this isn’t good practice.

It's critical to grow your list based on permissions. Giving people the option to subscribe (or unsubscribe) to your list can increase your personal deliverability.

Ready for another pro tip? Select a system that enforces good email practices by removing users who have high spam and unsubscribe rates. This will protect you from others on the shared IP who do abuse email permissions.

What systems have strong email deliverability?

Well, it depends on who you ask, so I went looking throughout the internet to see who has done some research and put together a list of the top email systems with good deliverability. 

Here's my Top Five:

  1. Mailer Lite
  2. Active Campaign
  3. ConvertKit (affiliate link)
  4. Constant Contact (affiliate link)
  5. Sendinblue

How do I increase deliverability?

Stats or tests can't always guarantee that your emails will hit the inbox, but a system that provides you with a solid deliverability score definitely helps. 

I've focused on steps before, but here's a refresher:

  1. Domain authentication: Use a DKIM key.
  2. Make sure your contacts opt-in.
  3. Write strong emails and subject lines that avoid spam filters.
  4. Allow people to choose what content they want to receive.
  5. Clean your list at least once every 6 months. 
  6. Only send value!

Whether you are a brick-and-mortar location or an online business, being found online is important, and today's brief explores the world of Google Business Profile!

In case you haven't kept up with the updates, Google Business Profile was previously known as Google My Business. It is a hugely powerful tool that can help increase your business's searchability.

There are SO many reasons why you should be leveraging this tool.

Google Business Profile is free.

Yes. I said free!

Authenticating your business has become a bit more tedious in the interest of ensuring the information is true and accurate. Am I the only one who misses when they used to mail you a postcard?

I have had issues recently with the new authentication process and had to do it a few times for clients. BUT it is 100% worth the time!

How do you leverage Google Business Profile to the max?

  1. Claim or create your listing
  2. Review data to ensure it is complete and verified
  3. Regularly update your hours
  4. Manage and respond to reviews

Once everything is set up, keep it updated! I cannot emphasize HOW important this is. Google is verifying your information.

One person I know had their business closed by Google because they forgot to update their business address after moving. They can’t get it lifted and now people actually think they went out of business and aren’t looking anymore. It’s very frustrating.

Not showing up in the map pack?

Google uses this information to determine who gets this valuable real estate:

  1. Relevance: Google wants to send you to a relevant location based on search terms. 
  2. Distance: the closer it is (when combined with relevance) matters.
  3. Prominence: How well-known you are.

Can you improve your ranking?

Google keeps its algorithm secret to ensure fairness. The key here is to take advantage of every space Google gives you.

They won’t let you pay for a better local ranking, but if you dedicate a bit of time to your listings each month or quarter, you should see improvements.

The phrase "auditing your website" sounds intimidating, but please stick with this episode! It's a super important practice for ANYONE who has a website—including me.

I recently went through my website and found five links that didn’t work. My site for KendraCorman.com isn’t that old, and a few links were already out of date.

It happens as time progresses and things change which is why it's important to regularly perform a website audit.

It’s frustrating when things don’t work like you want them when you are visiting other people’s sites, and the same goes for your visitors.

While I spoke to Erin an SEO expert back in February (I'll put the link in the resources if you'd like a refresher!) One of the things she suggested was to break up the work into smaller tasks.

It's easy to get overwhelmed, and we want to avoid that so the updates actually happen!

Auditing Your Website

Here's a list of the things I recommend you check and test on your website. Again, please feel free to break it up into manageable pieces as you see fit.

  1. Check the links on the major pages.
  2. Test your forms. Are you getting the right responses?
  3. Review the copy and the priorities on the website
  4. Look at the main menu and the footer.
  5. Check your 404 error page.
  6. Is it easy to work with you?

This seems like a short, easy, and quick list, right?

Well...

Depending on how many pages you have, it could be a long process.

Making The Process Easier

If everything on your website looks like mush because you've spent too much time staring at it, pay someone like a college student, a niece or nephew, or an employee to look at it.

We have a tendency to become blind to what we see all the time, and they might catch something you missed.

You could even encourage and bonus your employees for identifying issues on the website.

Before I became a podcaster, I was a blogger. I genuinely enjoy writing and have been really good at it for a long time, but blogging for SEO can be a bit different.

Search Engine Optimization is all about improving your site's ranking in the organic or non-paid section of search results. It's important to focus on if you want to be discovered by your prospects and customers.

So how do you create content that works for Google and people?

Start with your target audience! What are they searching for?

If you don’t know, find out; none of this other information can help if you can't answer your questions.

Okay, so you know what your audience is looking for. What’s next?

Focusing on blogging for SEO!

The number one rule of on-page SEO is to include your keyword in your title tag. When it comes to on-page optimization, your title tag is the most important part of your page. This is the first thing that Google sees that tells it what your page is about.

Don't forget to put your keyword in the meta description as well. When someone searches for that term, Google will bold your keyword, which helps your site stand out even more in the search engine result pages or SERPs.

At the end of the day, it's important to remember that you are writing content for people first. Google can tell if users only spend a few seconds on your page before clicking off, so make sure your blogs add value!

As we head into the Easter Weekend, I wanted to go a bit off-topic and talk about faith and faith's interactions with your brand, business, and community.

Your faith does not have to be separate from your business OR brand, which is what I want to explore in this episode. 

In case you didn't know, I am Catholic. I am Christian. I believe that we are obligated to make a positive impact in this world and help wherever we can, and that shapes how I live!

That being said, I totally understand if faith isn't something you want to hear about. It's okay! I won't be offended if you skip this episode, and I promise I'll be back next week with more marketing lessons learned.

Regardless of your personal beliefs—Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, spiritual, or something else entirely—faith can be a defining characteristic and I think it's important to feel comfortable displaying it.

Faith can be shown in many different ways—some direct and some subtle.

I joined an amazing group of Christian women called 4Word. I haven’t made some meetings recently (life has been busy, busy lately!), but it is an amazing organization that was started by Diane Paddison, author of the book Work, Love, Pray.

I LOVED her guiding principles for faith in the workplace, and had to share them:

Be a Full-time Christian:

Turning faith on and off is difficult—if not impossible.

Remember WHO You Work For:

Diane says that she fully believes that every good gift—even her job— comes from God. When you are at work, focus on serving your employer, but don't forget you are also serving God.

As an example, if you are a slacker but are constantly sharing your beliefs, you're not focused on doing your job to your best ability. Your coworkers and clients aren’t going to respect the faith of a slacker.

Respect Your Colleagues:

Always remember that the person next to you may be as devoted to their faith as you are to yours. Respect that!

Show, Don’t Tell:

This is my FAVORITE principle and is one I strive to accomplish. The way you live speaks louder than the words you use. As St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Preach the gospel at all times—if necessary, use words.”

Look for Allies:

Pay attention to the details. People will note things and mention other topics and over time, you'll find allies and build camaraderie based in faith.

Watch Your Language:

Even if someone asks you a question that could invite you to talk about your faith, always think before you speak. Keep your response simple, powerful, and to the point.

Just in April, Google released a review update for products, services and things.

They also provided tips on How to write reviews so that shoppers can find those reviews in Search.

So… what are the best practices that Google is pushing?

1.       Evaluate from a user’s perspective

2.       Demonstrate that you are knowledgeable about what you are reviewing- show you are an expert

3.       Provide evidence such as visuals, audio, or other links of your own experience with what you are reviewing, to support your expertise and reinforce the authenticity of your review.

4.       Share quantitative measurements about how something measures up in various categories of performance.

5.       Explain what sets something apart from its competitors.

6.       Cover comparable things to consider, or explain which might be best for certain uses or circumstances.

7.       Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of something, based on your own original research.

8.       Describe how a product has evolved from previous models or releases to provide improvements, address issues, or otherwise help users in making a purchase decision.

9.       Focus on the most important decision-making factors, based on your experience or expertise (for example, a car review might determine that fuel economy and safety are key decision-making factors and rate performance in those areas).

10.   Describe key choices in how a product has been designed and their effect on the users beyond what the manufacturer says.

11.   Include links to other useful resources (your own or from other sites) to help a reader make a decision.

12.   Consider including links to multiple sellers to give the reader the option to purchase from their merchant of choice.

13.   When recommending something as the best overall or the best for a certain purpose, include why you consider it the best, with first-hand supporting evidence.

14.   Ensure there is enough useful content in your ranked lists for them to stand on their own, even if you choose to write separate in-depth single reviews.

Finally, they say to focus on the quality and originality of your reviews, not the length. It’s all about value and that should be your view on everything in the world of marketing.

Start a once a month Website Wednesday or Maintenance Monday for yourself and schedule the 2nd Monday or Wednesday of the month as your maintenance day. I try not to do the first week of the month or the last week of the month because I feel that there is always a lot of other things that go on depending on your industry. 

I usually do a Pomodoro. Work for 25 minutes and have a 5 minute break. One 30 minute meeting. It’s perfect.

Pick one day to set up your tracker…

I would add a tracker in Excel or Google Sheets and just have 3 columns:

1.       Date

2.       Page and links to check

3.       Completed? Y/N

There are a few ways you can add  your pages, but I would add your main pages from your navigation in a list. You can always do more than one page if you want, but this way you have them all on the schedule. 

Think about the length of time your content is good for if you have external links because that will factor into your updating process.

Things happen all the time to your website and we just forget all the places there are links and other pages. 

Schedule a pomodoro, just 30 minutes a month and go through your site to make sure you are giving everyone a quality experience on your site.

Go ahead and leave your downloadables up forever.

Why not? 

If you have one that is outdated because it was all about COVID talked about the pandemic and the shutdown in the landing page, it's okay. As long as nothing is misleading and someone would know exactly what they were getting if they signed up for it, it isn't hurting anything.

If someone magically found that landing page, what does it matter?

Last week in my Imperfect Marketing Brief I spoke about the importance of spring cleaning your website and keeping track of that content. 

Say you have a resources page or an “everything” page where you put all your downloadables and resources to share with the world. 

At some point, like now, the COVID one isn’t relevant and should be removed from the page. That doesn’t mean we need to take down the landing page. If someone goes scrolling through your Facebook or LinkedIn history they could find the landing page and now it will still come up. 

There isn’t a need to take down or discontinue your downloadables if you don’t want to.

Now, if you update one, feel free to update it with new screen captures or videos or whatever has changed, but it isn’t the end of the world if someone finds that landing page and signs up for your emails.
