02 Aug 2022 | Before They Were Your Parents | 00:41:11
For Neda Toloui-Semnani, our today's guest, understanding who her parents were and what motivated them to participate in the 1979 Iranian Revolution as young Iranian activists became a crucial step to making sense of her own present. Born to a nation marked by political upheaval and now a Brooklyn-based emmy-winning writer & reporter, Neda is no stranger to the fabrics of social change and the equally important need to document such history. Her father was imprisoned and killed by the Islamic Republic, while her then-pregnant mother and three-year old Neda escaped Iran for America. After her mother passed away, Neda tried to comprehend why her parents did what they did, which could be argued as both brave sacrifices and selfish risks. Her book, THEY SAID THEY WANTED REVOLUTION: A Memoir of My Parents, published this past February, details her rediscovering of personal history against a larger political backdrop. Neda works for Vice News Tonight and has appeared in numerous publications such as The Washington Post, Kinfolk, and The Week as well as platforms like The Rumpus and This American Life. We had a fantastic conversation where we talked about the literary and emotional journey behind the memoir and what intersections exist between journalism and storytelling and how they are tools for uncovering the truth and preserving memory. In this second part of our two-episode series on kidnappings, media coverage, and the Latino community, I am finally dissecting the term "Missing White Girl Syndrome"---where did the phrase come from, why are white women overrepresented in missing person cases, and what can be done to address the disparity? Alongside Immigrantly's research, you'll hear from Liz Alarcón, our collaborator's founder and executive director, in these episodes, Project Pulso. Despite the complex subject, this finale to our two-parter is a meaningful conversation I look forward to sharing with you all.

Sharing today, we have Karina Ambartsoumian-Clough and Ekaterina, an alias used by our guest to protect her identity. What about their situation is so unique, you may ask. Well, Karina and Ekaterina have one crucial thing in common - that is their stateless status. Karina has a birth certificate with Odesa as the birthplace, a port once under the USSR. Ekaterina immigrated to the U.S. on a Soviet password. This interview was undoubtedly a teaching moment, and I’m in awe of Karina and Ekaterina’s bravery. 17 May 2022 | Special Drop: How Indian Food Became Frustratingly Hip | 00:35:25
Today we are sharing an episode from "Bad Table Manners," a podcast that pushes the boundaries of food storytelling in South Asia, produced by our friends at Whetstone Radio Collective. Enjoy! Thanks to the cool-ification of Indian food, traditional ingredients from the subcontinent, like turmeric and ghee, are now repackaged and resold in Western and Westernized markets as if they were “new” discoveries. Cleaned up, minimalistic design labels are often employed to give the familiar and unfamiliar look and conceal what one can argue is a recolonization of the Global South by the Global North. The U.S.-based academic Rumya Putcha tells us why this hipster Indian food is problematic, while Vidya Balachander, current South Asia editor at Whetstone, helps us unpack the idea of the global supermarket. 14 Feb 2023 | Valentine's Day Special: Swipe Left, Swipe Right | 00:36:42
Between “ghosting,” “Icks,” and the question of whether or not to swipe right, the dating world isn’t the same as it used to be. Forty-eight percent of adults aged 18 to 29 have used a dating app before, hoping to find that special thing called love — or maybe just something casual. But how do we feel about swiping left on someone so quickly? And have dating apps actually made it harder to find meaningful relationships? The Immigrantly team wanted to discuss all the ooey-gooey details of dating apps, love, and relationships this Valentine's Day. I got together with two team members, Kayla and Shei, to get their experiences and opinions on modern dating. Listen to this episode to join the conversation! Today's guest, Thea Pham, shares her journey in discovering and defining what mental health means to her, how it fits in the complicated puzzle of her upbringing, and why she has felt immense emotional and psychological strains being the first generation. As an accomplished biotech entrepreneur, Thea was the youngest in her class to graduate with a Ph.D. in neuroscience at UCLA and currently works for a biotech venture capital start-up in LA. She has won numerous awards for her research and was featured in the LA Business Journal's 20 entrepreneurs in their 20s. A month ago, Thea received viral attention after sharing an emotional TikTok about her challenges as the daughter of Vietnamese parents. In that video, she highlighted some common expectations that fall on children of immigrants, such as academic excellence and financial support. But in Thea's case, they have caused guilt, mental illness, and more. Atlhough, Thea and I come from diametric points of view in our status as daughter and mother, respectively but our dialogue was fruitful. I want you to stay after, to hear me unpack this conversation with our content editor and this script's writer, Yudi Liu, who is an immigrant daughter herself. 26 Jul 2022 | Once Upon An Abubakr in Hollywood (2021) | 00:40:20
Today I am sharing another gem from the Immigrantly vault. It’s our conversation with Abubakr Ali. He is an actor, writer, and singer. Last year, he landed a significant role in the upcoming Netflix series Grendel as the anti-hero, Hunter Rose. This opportunity is historic because Abubakr is the first Arab Muslim actor to lead in a comic book adaptation. As he steps into the spotlight, Abubakr was recently featured in the New York Times and other significant publications. Since ours was his first ever podcast interview, we thought it would be fun to re-share our fantastic conversation, especially for listeners who recently became part of the Immigrantly community. Welcome to Immigrantly's fall guest lineup. In part one of a two-episode series, my Rana Ayyub, an Indian journalist and opinion columnist with The Washington Post, joins me to discuss the inherent paradox in geopolitics, prioritizing strategic allyship over human rights. As a child, Rana witnessed the demolition of mosques and riots. Then, she worked as a relief worker during the Gujarat riots. She later authored the "Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover-up," an instant bestseller and an investigation into the reality behind the 2002 Gujarat riots. Most recently, Rana has been outspoken about the growing violence toward Indian Muslims and the impediments journalists like her face when trying to uphold freedom of the press and democracy amidst global political pressures. Lastly, Rana & I talk about mental health and Rana's newfound desire to be seen not just as the brave journalist she is but as a human being who struggles, feels, and hurts. Yara’s production “In Real Life” is structured in short documentaries on conversations around food, from its flavors to its history to its sociopolitical implications. These episodes are abundant in wacky dishes and comical relief, just as they are tuned to discussions on what food means to identity and community. Besides his evident passion for cooking and sharing that passion with others, Yara is also politically involved. What happens when a family story takes you on an unexpected journey? In this episode of Immigrantly, I sit down with Jake Warren, founder of Message Heard and the creator of Finding Natasha, a profoundly personal podcast about tracking down the woman who saved his mother’s life decades ago in the Soviet Union.
Jake’s mother, a young British ballerina, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train in Russia. But her dream quickly turned into a nightmare when she fell gravely ill, abandoned in an isolation ward until Natasha, a fellow dancer, risked everything to help her escape. Decades later, Jake embarks on a quest to find this woman, uncovering powerful themes of fate, memory, and the ripple effects of human kindness.

Jon Aragón is an entrepreneur who specializes in multidisciplinary design and branding. Intriguingly, Jon is also a preacher, which is a rather unconventional combination in my opinion. As a second-generation Colombian-American and as a part of the Afro-Latinx community, Jon’s background allows him to offer a unique perspective when approaching design and problem-solving. Jon’s spiritual identity wholly informs his work as a designer; he sees himself as a servant of Christ and works with the goal and intention of using his talents to assist organizations and individuals to the best of his ability. Jon has named his own design company “Jon Doulos”, with “Doulos” meaning slave or servant in Greek. Jon serves on the teaching and preaching team at his church and mentors young men, empowering them to perceive and pursue their calling. Now, she has released a book that helps women undo these tendencies, titled “Break the Good Girl Myth.” Her podcast, Heroine, continues this work by engaging in conversations with female visionaries. Today on Immigrantly, I'm excited to welcome the incredible Dr. Amra Sabic-El-Rayess. Amra is an Associate Professor at Columbia University, focusing on essential topics like social cohesion, the radicalization process, and how communities can hurt each other. But beyond her academic work, Amra has an incredible personal story—she survived the Bosnian war and Genocide in the 1990s. She wrote a powerful book about her experience called "The Cat I Never Named: A True Story of Love, War, and Survival." Her recent book is Three Summers, which launched in April 2024. The book is based on her real life and is geared towards young readers.
For those who may not know, the Bosnian Genocide happened between 1992 and 1995 and involved horrific ethnic cleansing and mass killings, especially against Bosniak Muslims. The worst of it was the Srebrenica Massacre in July 1995, where over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed.

Ruby Jaffrey is a talented, contemporary calligraphy artist who has exhibited her artwork worldwide, including in London, LA, New York, and Karachi. Like many of us who rely on art for expression and play, Ruby describes hers as celebrations of color, spirituality, faith, and stylistic zeitgeist. Ruby specializes in Arabic script and modern Islamic art. Visual art, calligraphy, and architecture are a massive part of Islamic culture, as seen in the vibrant and striking building designs of mosques and historical sites. However, there is a particular focus within the religion on the beauty of calligraphy and poetry– in Arabic, Urdu, and Farsi. Throughout our conversation, I was struck by how Ruby talked about art. Our guest, Stephen Satterfield, has dedicated his career to organizing, activating, and educating people about the origins and cultures of food. He founded Whetstone Radio Collective, a food magazine and media company that explores the history of American cuisine through the lens of cultural, socioeconomic, and human connections. Stephen's work disrupts the food canon in more ways than a few: writer, publisher, producer, former sommelier, and social entrepreneur. For example, his docuseries on Netflix, "High on the Hog," traces the foundation of American cooking from Texas to Africa and peels the layers of generations across time and geography. In today's episode, beyond flavors & taste, Stephen and I do a deep dive into the journey of African American cuisine in the U.S. and how food can be a catalyst for change. 28 Jan 2025 | What's Your Legacy? | 00:54:08
This year, we’ve tackled deep emotions and intricate journeys of faith, and today, we’re diving into the profound yet personal concept of legacy.
Legacy—it sounds monumental, right? But does it have to be? For me, crafting a legacy sometimes feels like another overwhelming to-do list. Yet, what if the legacy isn’t about grandeur but embracing our stories and connections in the here and now?
That’s where today’s guest, Shawna Wells, comes in! Shawna is the brilliant mind behind Legacy, Lyrics & Life, a podcast that explores how music intertwines with personal narratives to shape the legacies we’re building daily. She flips the script on traditional ideas, redefining legacy as fluid, radical, and deeply human.

24 May 2022 | Behind NHL Bench (with Aisha Visram) | 00:41:16
In honor of May being the Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (API), the National Hockey League (NHL) and Immigrantly joined forces to bring you two special episodes celebrating the role of the API community in hockey. Today's guest is Aisha Visram. She is Head Trainer for the L.A. Kings' American Hockey League affiliate in Ontario, California. On January 13, 2022, the Los Angeles Kings scored a 6-2 victory against the Pittsburg Penguins. The crowd roared in celebration– and so did the internet. Because at that particular game, Aisha Visram, our today's guest, was the second woman to work behind the bench at a regular-season NHL game. The first was Jodi Van Rees. Aisha's feat sparked conversation around gender and ethnic representation in hockey. Aisha and I sat down to talk about what it means to be a woman in a male-dominated sport, what authentic representation looks like, and why certain positions (including the athletic trainer position) are examined through a gendered lens. Today's guest, Dr. Mimi Khuc, is a writer, teacher, and scholar of things unwell, a pedagogy that examines humans' relationship to the world and themselves as one with differential unwellness because of the structures around them. Mimi is a Professor of Asian American studies and disability studies. Presently, she lectures at Georgetown University and is the 2023 Activist in Residence at FLOURISH at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Beyond academia, Mimi is the managing editor of the Asian American Literary Review and has appeared for talks organized by institutions like the ACLU, Ford Foundation, and Catapult. Before this conversation with Mimi, the term unwell was no more than a descriptor to me. I hadn’t realized that there is an entire study and practice dedicated to centering unwellness beyond the human body. Mimi and I chatted about current wellness trends and how they harm productivity structures. We connected this to ableist notions of resilience and grit, especially in immigrant communities. And finally, we also talked about ways to take care of ourselves and each other amidst this messiness. It was a thought-provoking, unique, and entertaining discussion. The 1947 Indian partition was one of the most colossal migrations in recorded history, leaving behind a devastating toll.
