Welcome to episode 5, season 5 of the I Want to Believe podcast!

In February of 1971, four different people on two different days witnessed some sort of otherworldly entity. We’ll tell you the whole story in a moment.

It all started on February 2, 1971, at approximately 8 pm when two friends — Sinikka Kuittinen and Mrs. Manninen — were driving from Kuusamo towards Oulu — in a region near Kiiminki in Finland.

As they drove, they noticed a strange light behind their car on the right side of the road. After a few moments, however, the mysterious light maneuvered over their vehicle and appeared to be pacing the car from the left side of the road. Sinikka, who was driving, reported that as the UFO passed overhead her ears felt plugged up and she had trouble hearing properly.

After a few moments of the light following them, they screeched to a stop at the edge of a field in the hopes that the light would continue on and no longer follow them. Instead… the light vanished. They sat there stunned, processing the event that had just occurred. Moments later, before they could even talk about the odd light, the friends witnessed a small entity in front of their car.

Caution : This post contains guns, possible assailant, possible assault in progress, and a bunch of other fuckery. Ye be warned.

Enter night #2. It is Sunday night. I have gone into town for groceries and am eating a very healthy dinner of carrot cake. I am locked in my car and I have my privacy blankets up. I am in my pajamas. The time is close to about 6:40. 6:45. I am getting ready for bed. The parking lot is completely empty. No other campers or hikers. Then I hear it...

Have you ever heard a woman not just scream, but she is screaming straight from every inch of her throat to her diaphragm? I have. It is what I imagine people think of as a blood curdling scream. It is worse than that. I scramble for my pistol and check my phone. No service. Another scream. This time paired with a "HELP ME.... HEEELP MEEE!!!!!!!"

We all know that the first rule of the woods is to not follow screaming things into the woods at night. Especially alone. This is how one dies. Not just in horror movies either. But here I am. Pajamas on. Door open. Pistol raised. Standing barefoot in a deserted parking lot.

Should I try and follow the screams? Is it a bobcat? Is it a mountain lion? Is it some kids fucking around? I don't even have a flash light. Where are my shoes? This parking lot is completely unlit. Fuck. The scream comes again and interrupts all my thoughts. It is the same pitch of screaming to death, complete with the words help me and stop. Even worse she sounds farther away now, like she is being dragged or carried deeper into the forest.

Instinct or training or adrenaline or all 3 take over. I raise the pistol high above the woodline and fire. My only thoughts now are to be as LOUD as possible. Hopefully a park ranger will come. Hopefully the shot scared the attacker or animal and it will leave the area. Still in the state of shock or whatever it was, I fired 2 or 3 more rounds high above the woodline. Then I see it. And I feel it. About 30 yards away from where I'm standing is the mouth of the trail.

What probably wasn't, but looked very much like a shadow person, appeared suddenly against the light sand of the mouth of the trail.It regarded me for a long second, then decided to charge at me. Fast. I dont know if I drove away with my van door still open, or maybe it closed on its own.... but I got the hell out of there and drove to a ranger station. A ranger was close by, and seeing me shaking in the car asked me what was wrong.

I told them I heard a woman screaming and noises in a certain parking lot of a certain trail. Strangely, he did not question me further. The ranger said thank you, then left in the direction of the trail.

I then continued to leave the park for the night. I didn't stop to put my shoes on. Didn't stop to find my glasses. Just drove and drove and drove until I found a gas station about 45 minutes away.

I called one friend babbling about what happened. I was terrified.

I woke up the next morning to the sound of rain on my car. No woods. No screaming. Just a gas station.

So my friends, even when we are far away from the Appalachian Mountains......

Rule #1 : That is probably not a woman screaming.

Welcome to a special Thanksgiving episode of the I Want to Believe podcast.

The dogman, a creature described as a 6 to 8-foot tall with a humanoid style body, covered in fur or hair, and with a head resembling a wolf or a bear. It is purported to have been seen moving as both a quadruped and a biped, and some reports describe it more closely to resembling a traditional werewolf or Bigfoot. It is often reported as a nefarious creature, leaving witnesses terrified after their encounter.

At precisely 9:14 PM on November 22nd 1987… Chicago area residents were the unwitting spectators of a mysterious television broadcast.

While viewers of WGN-TV were watching the 9 o’clock news, all seemed normal as Dan Roan, a local sportscaster, was going over the highlights of the Bears' victory over the Detroit Lions. Without warning, the TV signal flickered in and out… and then televisions went dark.

In WGN’s control room, technicians looked on, confused at what was happening. It was from their studio, located at Bradley Place in the north of the city, that the network broadcasted its microwave transmission to an antenna at the top of the 100-story John Hancock tower, seven miles away, and then out to tens of thousands of viewers. After a moment, the studio crew realized that their signal had been hijacked.

Viewers then saw a suited figure fade in from the darkness. The stranger danced around while wearing a ghoulish rubbery mask with sunglasses and a frozen grin. Chris Knittel of Vice wrote, “Static hissed through the signal; behind him, a slab of corrugated metal spun hypnotically. This was not part of the regularly scheduled broadcast.”

Over the course of March 14 & 15, 1975, members of the Baker family encountered a series of unexplained events. It all began in Wisconsin’s Ashland County in the town of Mellen. The area is known for its hiking trails, natural waterfalls, and pristine nature. But like most areas in the Midwest, and, might I add, the Northeast… there is much more to the small town than meets the eye. “…within its borders a rich history of strange and unusual legends, bizarre encounters with unknown creatures, and peculiar sightings of unexplained things both in the sky and on the ground. Mellen, as you will soon find out, proves without a doubt that appearances can be deceiving and that just below a location’s Mayberry surface typically rests a plethora of X-Files cases just ripe for the picking.”

Ay! Welcome to the 2023 Halloween Special of the I Want to Believe podcast!

There are a lot of paranormal games that people have played in order to experience a ghost, demon or just to have some spooky fun. Halloween is typically when a lot of these games are played and some say they do nothing more than work up an active imagination. However, others have claimed devastating effects. People have said that they’ve been scared so badly that they were never the same again. Some even claimed that they were haunted horribly for years after trying one of the paranormal games. More rare stories involve possession, disappearances and death.

There are quite a few paranormal games to play such as Dry Bones, The Closet Game, Three Kings, and one you probably remember from your childhood, Bloody Mary. They all come with varying degrees of difficulty and rules but the game in question on this night, is really quite simple.

Despite this, the Midnight Game is claimed to be one of the more dangerous ones you can play.

It first started to make the internet rounds of 4chan and Reddit around the early 2010s. There was talk of it having some kind of pagan origin, but like many creepy pastas, specific origins are hard to come by.

By playing the game, you summon the Midnight Man, who is a demon of unknown origin and is said to stalk you throughout your home for 3 hours and 33 minutes, which is the length of the game. As you walk around your home with a lit candle, it is said that you can tell when the demon is near by hearing whispers, feeling cold spots and seeing shadows.

Should your candle go out… the Midnight Man will find you and will remove your organs one by one, devouring them as you die.

Last year, as I was researching, recording, and editing season 4 of this podcast, I tend to transfer files from my desktop to my laptop... during one of those transfers, I lost a whole bunch of files that I was working on, including this episode. A New York Times posthumous obituary byline states that Mary Ellen Pleasant was born into slavery, that she became a Gold Rush-era millionaire and a powerful abolitionist. While some claim that her life seems to have been shrouded in a bit of mystery, she certainly was a successful 19th-century American entrepreneur. It is estimated that she was born around 1814, some say on a Georgia plantation while her autobiography states, insists actually, that she had been born in Philadelphia. Sacramento writer Susheel Bibbs wrote, “Her life is so enshrouded in mystery because she was her own spin doctor. Pleasant wrote three autobiographies -- but each one contradicts the other on basic facts, such as the year of her birth.”

Welcome to episode 4, season 5 of the I Want to Believe podcast!

The word doppelgänger is German in origin, and means "double goer" or "double walker." And while the word is sometimes used to describe someone's real-life lookalike, the word is technically defined as "a ghostly counterpart of a living person," which directly implies its paranormal nature. Tonight, we’ll be sharing some creepy doppelganger stories… As always, all stories are from various websites and subreddit forums and will be conveyed as is – in a first-person narrative. While we cannot speak to the veracity of these encounters, we do hope you enjoy them.

Welcome to the I Want to Believe podcast! 

This is the first bonus episode of season 5 and the first episode recorded in 2022. We’re doing things a little different with this episode. We actually covered the Jersey Devil back in season 2, episode 5. But as with a lot of our earlier seasons, we were novices at podcasting and our audio quality was lower. Much like our updated and remixed Dover Demon episode, I’m giving the Jersey Devil the remix treatment. This will include audio samples from various television shows and youtube channels.

The story of the Jersey Devil goes back almost 3 centuries. Since then, it has become a muddled heap of myth, legend, true stories with believers and skeptics. How’s about we dive in from the beginning.

The legend begins with the Pine Barren forests of New Jersey and a woman named Mother Leeds. She had given birth to 12 children, and in 1735, she found that she was pregnant with her 13th. The Leeds family was poor and when they found that she was pregnant again, she cursed the child and said, “Let this one be a devil!” This is where the typical legend of the Jersey Devil begins, but when you do a little bit of research, there’s a lot more that comes to the surface. Despite 1000s of encounters, the real story might just be humble, human beginnings. Included: political intrigue, Quaker in-fighting, almanacs, a royal governor, and a man named Benjamin Franklin.

Welcome to a special Holiday episode of the I Want to Believe podcast! In early 1965, odd rumors began to circulate through the small English town of Warminster. Bizarre sounds had been heard on the morning of Christmas 1964, which would be followed by a long period of strange sightings. Soon, Warminster was swarmed by UFO enthusiasts, all wanting to learn about “The Thing.”

Michael Whelan wrote, “Odd sightings and sounds were reported irregularly in Warminster, dating back to as early as the 1930's - incidents that predate the second World War, as well as the advent of the modern science fiction genre. However few and far in-between, bizarre encounters around Warminster seem to pre-date the rest of the world's UFO craze by several decades.”

The early reports mainly consisted of odd sounds described as "crackling & scratch-like". The reports of bizarre sounds continued through the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s. However, it wouldn’t be until December of 1964 when rumors of something otherworldly may be taking place in the small hamlet. A local journalist’s article about the bizarre encounter was published in the Warminster Journal in January of 1965. The article actually became the newspaper’s most popular story ever published in its history... listen to the episode for the rest of the story.

Sarah Ware was born Sarah MacDonald in Nova Scotia in 1846. During the 1860s, she moved to the United States and wound up in Bucksport Maine. She fell in love with the small town and soon after, she fell in love with a local man named Charles W. Ware. He and Sarah wed in 1869, she was 25 and Charles was 23. They divorced in the early 1890s and in 1898, Sarah went missing. On Saturday September 17th, 1898 she was in town, visiting a friend and stopped at a few places along the way, after 9:15pm, she was never seen alive again. The word “cult” is typically considered pejorative. And it seems the groups themselves tend to evolve into different archetypes. From destructive to doomsday cults to political and polygamist cults, and more. They all have varying definitions when considering pop culture, academia or whichever lens someone chooses to view a cult through.

During the 1960s, the counterculture movement in America was about peace, love, and happiness. Historians say that freedom of expression was the cornerstone of both the Civil rights and the Vietnam anti-war movements. But by the 1970s, America was filled with violent faiths and deadly cults. Charles Manson, Reverend Jim Jones, and many other cult leaders became common names in American households.

During parts of 2019 and 2020, the people of the small northern Maine town of Saint Agatha were concerned that a cult had started to take root in their quiet and safe hamlet. We’ll tell you more in a sec…

Between 1982 and 1990, around two dozen British-based scientists and engineers died under mysterious circumstances. The scientists involved were either tangentially attached or worked on various projects related to the United States Strategic Defense Initiative, otherwise known as Star Wars. On the evening of February 23rd, 1975, two 7-year-old boys, Masato Kawano and Katsuhiro Yamahata, were roller skating near the Hinode Housing Estate in Kamimachi, Kōfu, Yamanashi, Japan.

At around 7pm, they heard a crackling sound that seemed to be coming from somewhere above them. 

As they looked to the sky, they were startled to see two orange balls of light flying about. They were fascinated by the aerial acrobatics and continued to watch when, all of a sudden, one flew off while the other started to descend.

The story began on April 21, 1977, when, at around 10:30 p.m., a teenager named Billy Bartlett, along with two friends, were driving down Farm Street in Dover, Massachusetts. As the teenagers drove past a loose, stone wall, Bartlett noticed some movement out of the corner of his eye. At first he assumed that the motion was caused by a dog or some other animal, but as his headlights bore down on the creature, he realized that it was like nothing he had ever seen.

On October 17, 1973 in Falkville, Alabama, a man encountered an odd, humanoid being. This man was the town’s Chief of Police, and he just so happened to get some pictures of the being. We originally covered the Metal Man in Season 2, Episode 1... since then, Former Police Chief Jeffrey Greenhaw gave an interview and provided some interesting information not reported in the original case. I have the audio of that interview and you'll be able to hear Greenhaw's own words about the incident.

In the evening hours near the end of March 1873, a peculiar encounter was had by a farmer and his son. The story comes to us from authors Chris Aubeck and Martin Shough in their book, Return to Magonia: Investigating UFOs In History. They wrote, “Men in Black were a staple of folklore and religious visions long before their association with flying saucers in the late 1940s. However, all these elements combined, plus circumstantial evidence that lifts it a little above the level of a mere tale, means that the case of Thomas Inman and the alien who drove away should figure among the most significant UFO encounters documented in the 19th century.”

Goblins and ghouls have been reported in all shapes and sizes. The Kinnula Humanoid was a 3 foot tall, suited creature witnessed by numerous people in Finland during the 1970s. The Dover Demon was a strange little oddity reported by several eyewitnesses in Massachusetts. And the Kentucky Goblins were little alien-like creatures who tormented a large rural family in 1955.

Tonight, our story takes place just one year after the Kentucky Goblins incident. A man, in a small New Hampshire town, bore witness to an otherworldly visitor...

In 1978, five men mysteriously disappeared on a mountain in California. Tragically, a month later, most of their bodies were discovered. Kyle and I actually covered this story in season one… but we were just novices at podcasting, not that we’re professionals at this point, but our audio quality has gotten better and we thought it would be good to revisit this unsolved case.

The strange circumstances surrounding their deaths have since been referred to as the American Dyatlov Pass Incident. The mystery, heartbreak, twists and turns, and the numerous unanswered questions likens this case to a group of 9 Russian hikers that were found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Ural Mountains in 1959. There have been countless television shows, movies, and podcasts about that case. In fact, there’s a recent documentary called, “An Unknown Compelling Force” available on Amazon Prime. With all the information available about that incident, we will not be covering it here. We will, however, share what is known about the Yuba county 5 story in just a moment.

The thunderbird is a legendary creature in some North American indigenous peoples' history and culture. It is largely considered a supernatural being of power and strength. It is especially important, and frequently depicted, in the art, songs and oral histories of many Pacific Northwest Coast cultures, but is also found in various forms among some peoples of the American Southwest, the East Coast, Great Lakes, and Great Plains.

In modern times, the thunderbird is reported to be a cryptid, along the likes of Bigfoot, Mothman, and many more. Fairly recent sightings of the creature involve that of a giant bird seen in several parts of the United States.

At approximately 11:30 pm. on the evening of March 17th, 1978, 39 year-old service engineer, Ken Edwards was making the 15-mile journey home following a union meeting in Greater Manchester. By all accounts, Edwards was a straight-laced, hard working man who was not prone to wild flights of fancy or belief in the paranormal. Nevertheless, as the exhausted Edwards drove down an isolated stretch of road through the mostly derelict industrial district where the Risley atomic energy complex was located, something utterly unbelievable snared his attention…

Edwards claimed that he first spied what he thought was a “man climbing,” but he quickly realized that he was looking at a gargantuan, humanoid figure lumbering down the steep embankment adjacent to the nuclear facility.

The startled engineer immediately hit the brakes and his van slowed to a halt near the curb of the road some 50-feet away from the hulking humanoid, which was now illuminated by his headlights. Edwards stared in astonishment at this bipedal beast as it lurched down the hill with its arms outstretched, utilizing strange, stiff-legged movements.

Welcome to the season 7 premier of the I Want to Believe podcast! We have a special guest co-host with us today… they are the creator of Kiwi’s Cryptid World, they are an artist and photographer and turns out... they are also the love of my life. Her name is Christina. Tonight, our story starts in Bulgaria and ends in the cosmos.

Baba Vanga was a Bulgarian woman who lost her sight as a child. In 1923, at 12 years old, Vanga claimed that she was caught in a tornado and thrown into a field. After the storm, she could not be located and her family assembled a search party. After nearly 72 hours, Vanga was found.

She was frightened, bruised and covered in dirt. She was cleaned and doctors addressed her superficial wounds but they found that she could not open her eyes. Vanga told them that her eyes hurt and felt as if there was sand and dirt inside of them.

She claimed that she had her first vision during that storm. She eventually lost her sight over the following years. Her visions of the future became stronger during those years as well.

Over time, she became world renowned for her accurate predictions which included the death of Hitler, Stalin, the Kennedy brothers, and numerous presidential elections.

With this episode, we'll tell you about her life, her past predictions and what she said is in store for us for 2024 and beyond.

Calls flooded into local authorities to report these strange sightings along nearly 200 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. The calls were from folks from all walks of life — police and a meteorologist to residents. Most who saw the lights insisted they were UFOs; nearly 30 years later, their true origin remains a mystery.

On December 26, 1973, The Exorcist was unleashed upon the American public. Some people were sickened by the film’s imagery and violent scenes. Some claimed to have fainted, vomited, suffered heart attacks, and more. Despite all the chaos, most movie goers loved the movie and it was the highest grossing, R rated horror movie until the 2017 release of IT. 

Years before “Based on” or “Inspired by a true story” would ever be seen on the screens of countless horror movies, the general public, at that time, were mostly unaware of the origins of William Peter Blatty’s book and screenplay. Those origins transpired about 24 years prior to the film’s release.

In 1949, Blatty was attending Georgetown University when he read an article in The Washington Post titled, Priest Frees Mt. Rainier Boy Reported Held in Devil's Grip. It was written by Post Reporter Bill Brinkley, and according to Blatty, it inspired him to write his 1971 novel, The Exorcist. It was a relatively short article, approximately 500 words, and read in part, “In what is perhaps one of the most remarkable experiences of its kind in recent religious history, a 14-year-old Mount Rainier boy has been freed by a Catholic priest of possession by the devil, Catholic sources reported yesterday."

Almost all cultures throughout history have their own cryptids. In Wampanoag legend, that creature is the Pukwudgie. They could be compared to gnomes or fairies of European folklore. Due to their penchant for teasing humans with harmless pranks, they appear rather charming compared to other mythical monsters..

People have described them as human-like, except much smaller. Some have said they have a canine-like nose, large ears, lips, and fingers, and have been compared to trolls, goblins, or leprechauns.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose was a 2005 horror movie about a young woman who had become possessed by several demons. The movie was based on true events… in this episode, we’ll be sharing those events with you.

Anneliese Michel, the woman that Emily Rose was based on, grew up devoutly Catholic in Bavaria, West Germany in the 1960s. When she was 16, one day at school she blacked out and was seen walking around in dazed state and unresponsive to those who approached her. Though Anneliese did not remember what happened, friends and family told her of the trance-like state she had been in. Little did they know, this was only the beginning. 

After numerous exorcisms of Anneliese ended in tragedy, her parents and priests involved were charged with her death. Was it temporal lobe epilepsy and Geschwind syndrome as the prosecution presented? Or was it actual demonic possession, which the defense argued? Bigfoot sightings are reported from around the world and have been for a long time. In different regions and cultures of the world, the Bigfoot is known by many different names; Sasquatch, Yeti, Yowie and many more. Also, the phenomenon is more popular than ever. There have been numerous television shows covering the topic throughout recent years. And there are two acclaimed museums on both coasts of the United States. Of course, there’s the International Cryptozoology Museum located in our home state of Maine. It’s just about 2-3 hours south of us in the city of Portland and famously curated by the legendary Loren Coleman. And in the summer of 2019, Bigfoot researcher Cliff Barackman opened a museum in the inappropriately named town of Boring, Oregon called the North American Bigfoot Center.

Now, more than ever before, reports are just pouring in from all over. The Bigfoot Research Organization is just barely keeping up. Crytozoologynews.com speculates that it could be due to-quote, “video cameras being built in mobile phones.” Despite all of these reports, it’s fairly rare to find the police involved in such things. This case in particular, is intriguing due to a call being placed to 911 from the witness. As we all know, emergency services record all incoming calls. This one has yet to be confirmed by officials but many crypto themed websites do think it to be authentic.

UFOs were observed in the skies over the states of Arizona, Nevada, and the Mexican state of Sonora on March 13, 1997. It all started when a civilian pilot reported seeing lights in the sky on his approach to the airport. USA Today wrote-quote, “Lights of varying descriptions were seen by thousands of people between 7:30 and 10:30pm MST, in a space of about 300 miles from the Nevada line, through Phoenix, to the edge of Tucson. There were two distinct events involved in the incident: a triangular formation of lights seen to pass over the state, and a series of stationary lights seen in the Phoenix area. The United States Air Force identified the second group of lights as flares dropped by A-10 Warthog aircraft that were on training exercises at the Barry Goldwater Range in southwest Arizona. Witnesses claim to have observed a huge carpenter's square-shaped UFO, containing five spherical lights or possibly light-emitting engines. Fife Symington the governor of Phoenix at the time, was a witness to this incident and later called the object "otherworldly".”

For most people, haunted houses, ghost tours, and haunted hayrides are a once-a-year event when the brave-at-heart creep through such sites on All Hallows' Eve. A bit of a good scared saved for moonlit nights in October, and in the back of your mind, all is well and fun because those ghosts and goblins are a sheet or a rubber mask.

Alright… enough of all that… let’s get into the town of Millinocket, Maine, a young couple, and the Legend of the Screaming Bridge. 

It is no secret that Maine is home to scary stories and terrifying tales about creatures in the woods and lights in the sky. But when it comes to ghosts, the stories far outweigh any other type of paranormal phenomena. We have ghosts that occupy old lighthouses, wooded areas, homes too many to count, and of course, haunted roads.

In Millinocket, there is a small section of asphalt and bridge located on Route 11 called Brownville Road. Legend says that a fateful night around the 1940s or 50s changed the history of that location forever. 

From the newspaper of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the University Times wrote, “On their way back from their honeymoon, a young couple were driving down Brownville Road in Millinocket, Maine. The couple’s car swerved off the road for unknown reasons and crashed. The husband suggested for his wife to stay in the car while he went to look for help. But upon his return, she was nowhere to be found.” The husband, friends, family and ultimately the police, could not figure out what happened to the young woman. Well… at least, not until she began haunting the road and nearby bridge. To this day, Millinocket locals claim to see her while driving through the Brownville Road.

Hot dang! Welcome to season 4 of the I Want to Believe podcast!

Well holy shit, 2020 am I right? I know it’s currently 2021, I say this because this podcast’s format is to write, record, and edit the entire season at the tail end of one year, and then release all episodes at the start of the new year. I’m recorded this particular episode on a late August night in 2020 and for me, our future as Americans couldn’t be more unknown but also AND ultimately… that future is up to us. Which may be just as equally terrifying as it is hopeful. 

Oh, another thing before we dive in is that my co-host Kyle Sawyer is unavailable this season due to Covid. He’s fine, safe and healthy but lives upstate from me, which has piss-poor internet service and getting together in close proximity to record is undesirable, so as a result, we are unable to record together. Now, with that said, we do keep in touch as much as we can and he has agreed to a special phone appearance at some point during this season. So, you will hear from him on one of these upcoming episodes!

Last year, S2 E4 we shared their origins and some stories on the ole BEKs, this season, we’re just jumping in. This first story I thought was interesting because it takes place in the morning, as opposed to all of the nighttime stories that we hear. This is a first hand account from a witness, so it reads as first person, here we go: "The incident took place about 13 years ago. I had just moved to a new city with my wife. We were small town newlyweds from the Midwest. We moved cross country to one of the biggest cities in the Southwest so I could attend graduate school. Being naive and new to city living, I habitually answered the door without a second thought. Never again after this."

Diana, Princess of Wales was a member of the British royal family. She was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. Wikipedia wrote that, “Diana's activism and glamour made her an international icon and earned her an enduring popularity.” Her life, as many know, came to a tragic end on August 31 1997. She died in the hospital as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash in a road tunnel in Paris, France. An entire episode could be done just on the conspiracy of her passing.

But now, 22 years a later, a young boy has made claims that he is the reincarnation of the late Princess. He is the son of David Campbell who is a well-known Australian singer, stage performer and is currently a co-host on the Today Extra show out of Australia. Press play for the rest of the story.

Alright… let’s talk about an unsolved murder and a haunting.

A young couple, James Soh and Kelly Hong were friends and classmates in secondary school. They enjoyed each other’s company throughout the years. But when James was attending University and studying polytechnic he finally asked Kelly out, making it about a decade after they first met in school.

The pair ventured out to the Singapore shoreline for their first date as an official couple. After walking for a while, they stopped for a short break, sitting to rest and talk upon the stairs of the Amber Beacon Tower. The tower is a brightly colored beacon that exhumes a radiant light and makes for a convenient resting place, positioned right on the beachfront.

There’s reported anomaly haunting a basin in Phippsburg. This one is in the form of a bipedal creature with wings, and a terrifying scream. 

As the name suggests, more people have heard it than have seen it with their eyes. Emitting a blood-stopping scream, it’s said to haunt the Basin in Phippsburg. The Basin is a wooded area long known for late night forest parties and beer-fueled shenanigans. The few who have seen it describe a creature half man and half bird.

Wood Island Light is an active lighthouse on the eastern edge of Wood Island in Saco Bay, on the southern coast of Maine. The light is just outside the entrance to Biddeford Pool and the end of the Saco River. The lighthouse was built in 1807 and is a 47-foot white tower of granite rubble. The light itself sits 71 feet above high water. Its automated beacon alternates between green and white every 10 seconds. Wood Island Light is Maine's second-oldest lighthouse (after Portland Head Light) and the nation's eleventh-oldest.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Wood Island Light Station on January 21, 1988. As it stands right now, the United States Coast Guard maintains the active beacon of the lighthouse, while The Friends of Wood Island Light, a non-profit organization, has assisted the Coast Guard by maintaining and restoring parts of the lighthouse and keepers’ dwellings which they now own.

We got creepy one here, and one not really discussed very much. There are a few stories of what are called the, “Radiant Boys.” And we’re going to share a few of those on this episode. Here’s a little background, “The phenomenon mostly has its origins in the lore of Northern England and in Germany, where they are called the “kindermorderinn.” The origins of these restless spirits are that of great tragedy, as they are said to be the ghosts of children who were murdered by their own mothers, something which has doomed them to walk the earth not only as ghosts, but also as portent of disaster and harbingers of death.

Suddenly, the radio was overcome by a prolonged burst of static interference. Seconds later, the milking machine shut down as if it had suddenly lost all of its power. On January 23, 1974 at around 8:30pm-quote, “the ground around the Berwyn Mountains shook. It sounded very much like an explosion. The orange glow on the mountainside would suggest that was exactly what it was. The “official” explanation would state that an earthquake, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale, had hit the area. The epicenter – as stated by the British Geological Survey – was likely to be Bala Lake. This was incidentally, the same spot where local residents would report seeing the aftermath of an explosion. The “explosion” – according to military reports – was the result of a bizarre meteor shower. One meteor went crashing into the mountainside.” Perhaps something else was in the sky that night. Alright… let’s talk about werewolves in Mexico.

The state of Chiapas in Southern Mexico is a beautiful mountainous and forested area. Mayan ruins can be found in the northern part of the state, and in another area is a temple which houses a church, museum and a marketplace is nearby. Despite some of the terrors that have come with the arrival covid 19, residents of the state have also been plagued with sightings of mysterious creatures. Terrified multiple witnesses have reported encounters with werewolves.

I'll be featuring an excerpt from one of the interviews that I conducted with Mike Stevens, who is the subject of my new book 'Granite Skies'. He tells the story of his earliest memory about an encounter with a UFO in South Hampton, New Hampshire. At one point during his recollection, he has a blank in his memory as to what happened next. Over twenty years later, he had a hypno-regression therapy session where more information was revealed. This episode also contains a portion of that original regression. At some points, it is hard to listen to. If you stick with it, we thank you. Experiencer reports can be emotional, sad, and ugly.

Alright… lets talk about Slender Man. 

Slender Man is described as an entity that takes the form of a tall, thin humanoid figure with long limbs, wearing a business suit, and has a featureless face. Some Slender Man sightings present the creature with long tentacles, branches, or claws emerging from its back. Stories often cite that the Slender Man stalks victims of its choice, often driving them insane before stealing them away. The mythical creature is also said to steal away children and has many cults following it. The Slender Man is known to leave its victim’s organs in plastic bags hanging from trees. Despite all the fantastical stories and anecdotal evidence, some people believe that Slender Man exists.

On the evening of November 16, 1963, 17-year old John Flaxton, 18-year old Mervyn Hutchinson and two other younger friends were walking on Sandling Road in the county of Kent — Kent is a county in South East England, it borders Greater London to the north-west, Surrey to the west and East Sussex to the south-west. The county also shares borders with Essex along the estuary of the River Thamesa. It has also been said that the region is-quote, “apparently rife with cryptozoological and paranormal activity”.

In 2019, The Singular Fortean Society website was contacted by a witness who reported encountering an "unusual being with wings and bright green eyes". The witness went on to say, “I was outside Jewel Osco in Woodstock, Illinois and believe to [have seen] the same visual of an unusual being in the McHenry County fairground. It screeched at me then charged the fence, about thirty feet from the fence, it had very bright green eyes, [and] had wings and was all black leathery colored. It ran back towards the woods in the McHenry County fairgrounds. I called [the Woodstock police department] and [they] had county sheriffs respond to the location.”

A lot of interesting things happened in the year 1884. For example, On May 1st 1884 the dreaded 8-hour work day was first proclaimed by the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions. It was then known as May-Day, we now call it Labor Day (and moved to the beginning of September.) On May 17, Alaska became a US Territory. On August 5th, the cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty was laid. The first recorded photograph of a tornado was taken on August 28, 1884 by an F.N. Robinson in South Dakota and on November 4th, Grover Cleveland won the election for the President of the United States. But one event that you won’t read about in history books or found on a Wikipedia page for historic events for 1884 is an often-overlooked story in the history of Ufology. The Lizard Man story actually had its beginnings before Davis’ sighting. One year prior, in 1987, a cyclist had stopped near the Scape Ore Swamp to have a smoke and drink from the area’s natural well. While there, the cyclist reported seeing a tall, humanoid creature. However, with Davis’ sighting and immediate reporting of it to local authorities, the fanfare really took off.

Athelhampton Hall is a castle-like estate in the English country of Dorset, near Dorchester. It is a popular destination for weddings and receptions but it is also known for being haunted.

The current owner, Andrea Cooke and her family have lived in the estate for over 20 years and have reported numerous paranormal encounters. In an interview with The Sun (an English tabloid) she stated, “The most recent was a dark, hooded figure which rushed past one of our cleaners. On the first sighting, she assumed she had imagined it but ten minutes later it came towards her again, up the old servants staircase and hurried past her into a bathroom. She was terribly excited about it, having never witnessed such a thing. It is a figure our youngest son has seen on a couple of occasions, but the cleaner was unaware of this at the time. Despite all this, it is an amazing place to live.”

Two men decide to embark on a journey that will take them around their beloved state to write a book containing folklore, ghost stories and legends. As Benedict puts it, these men want to-quote, “…collect folklore stories and homespun wisdom from almost anyone who would talk to them. They were compelled to collect and preserve these stories for future generations and to not lose those rare tales that only existed in out of the way communities to the ever-ticking clock of time.”

While on site for a drug raid, the situation turned strange quickly for a police sniper. Phantoms and Monsters reported, “He had been there for a while when he started to hear heavy breathing and snorting coming from an area behind the house. His first reaction was that the suspect was out in the yard, so he looked through his scope and noticed a huge hairy being digging through something." Paula Barreau woke up on October 7, 1992 like any other morning. While getting ready for work, she could hear her 12-year old daughter Rhianna eating breakfast and watching TV. When Paula was in the kitchen drinking coffee Rhianna asked her if she could walk to the newsstand to pick up a Christmas card for her pen pal. Paula agreed to this as she trusted her daughter and knew the neighborhood to be safe. When Paula returned home from work, Rhianna was gone.

Alright… lets talk about the Franchi Stadium UFO.

It was on a crisp autumn day in Tuscany, Italy. The date was October 27, 1954 and the Fiorentina football club were playing against the local rivals the Pistoiese. Ten-thousand fans were watching in the concrete bowl of the Franchi Stadium. But just after half-time the stadium fell eerily silent - then a roar went up from the crowd. The spectators were no longer watching the match, but were looking up at the sky, fingers pointing. The players stopped playing, the ball rolled to a stand-still. Someone said, "We were astonished we had never seen anything like it before. We were absolutely shocked."

On this episode of the I Want to Believe podcast I take a roadtrip around Maine. I have a new digital audio recorder in hand CHECK IT OUT HERE and I visit some of the locations covered in the new book. I also talk about horror movies, visiting my folks and share a few stories. 

The audio is pieced together from about 16 different little trips I took, while the audio is high quality, the sound is inconsistent. In some clips I can be heard driving, in others I may be outside, and the mic is in varying distances from my mouth, lol. Totally listenable, just wanted full disclosure.

On the trial of…Champ chronicles North America’s most infamous lake monster, affectionately known as “Champ”. Centuries of lore, sightings and mystery surround this creature as well as the lake it calls home. From IMDB.com, Verónica is a teenage girl surpassed by the circumstances after her father died recently, her mother works in a bar all day and she must care for her three siblings, twin girls and a young boy. Still mourning for her father's death, Verónica decides to play Ouija with her friends Rosa and Diana. Alone in the cellar of the school, the girls try to contact their recently deceased family members, but the session goes wrong and something happens to Verónica. She starts to feel a strange presence inside the house and fears there’s a threat to her siblings. Advised by Sister Death about the sinister spirit which is close to her, Verónica is looking for a way to break contact with the entity.

A social worker and a postal employee walk into a boarding house…. While this could lend itself to a variant of the old “bar joke”, it is actually how Betty Barrett met Barney Hill. In short, Betty and Barney were a couple who claimed to have been abducted by extraterrestrials in a rural area of New Hampshire. This occurred between September 19 and 20, 1961. It was the first widely publicized report of an alien abduction in the United States.

We’re just going to pick up where we left off and keep it moving with another story to share. This episode is about THE FALKVILLE METAL MAN.

On October 17, 1973 in Falkville, Alabama, a man encountered an odd, humanoid being. This man was the town’s Chief of Police, and he just so happened to get some pictures of this being. The story starts out as a quiet evening in Falkville. Chief Greenhaw had arrived home in the early evening, ate dinner with his wife, and relaxed for the night. Just before 10pm, the phone rang at the Greenhaw residence, the Chief answered to a frantic woman yelling about a landed UFO in a field near her home. Greenhaw could hardly believe, got dressed and went to check it out.

REVISITING MISSING 411

This episode brings us back to some familiar territory... the Missing 411 phenomena. Despite our knowledge on the topic, we go to the fringes here. We explore missing time and some possible extraterrestrial implications (hence the cover art). 

Our first story takes us back to the late 1800s in the great state of Maine (me & Kyle's home state). A little girl goes missing for over 48 hours... when found, she claimed that it was daylight the entire time. What could this mean?

Our second story takes us to the southern United States to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where a woman and her son experience a wild case of missing time.

Ok, let’s get to it… on this episode we will be discussing the Zozo Demon.

Despite the terrifying legend that precedes this larger than life entity, or should I say “afterlife” entity, the Zozo Demon may be more akin to Slenderman. I’m not sure so let’s get some background, eh?

The “Zozo” demon, according to research, has many names including - Zaza, Mama, Oz, Zo, Za, and Abacus. It is said that Zozo is a trickster demon that hunts down innocent people via the Ouija board. People who claim this also say that Zozo presents itself by “guiding the planchette into figure-8 formations, before frantically zooming back and forth between the "Z" and "O."

In 2009, a man named Darren Evans wrote about Zozo on the website, TrueGhostTales.com. Evans wrote, “During my experiences with Ouija boards one particular spirit always seemed compelled to make its presence known. Its name is ZOZO. Today I refuse to even pronounce its name as I believe the mere pronunciation of it can cause it to manifest itself.

Awe yeah… let’s get talking about… the Crosswick Monster…

Crosswick is a small village not far from the town of Waynesville, Ohio. It was once a papermill town, but, according to research, “a planned development never quite took off”. Isabella Warner (who writes for the Times-Gazette of Ohio) wrote, “Its sole claim to fame is a mystery that has captured imaginations for more than a hundred years.”

Back in 1882 there were several people who encountered something similar to the Lizard Man of Bishopville (Scape Ore Swamp) which we discussed in S2 E6. They described encountering a huge, angry, bipedal lizard. Warner wrote, “...Ed and Joe Lynch were fishing on a small creek on the south side of the village when they heard a stirring in the reeds of the bank. Upon closer inspection, the boys found the source of the noise to be a 30-foot-long black and white “snake with legs” with yellow spots.”

Season 2 Episode 13

THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF LERINA GARCIA

If you've made it this far, thank you! This is the 13th episode of the I Want to Believe podcast and while this IS NOT the season finale, we will be taking a little break. Why? Well, it's the start of the new year, we've recorded and edited 13 episodes back to back and I've got a few other things to do!

I will soon be travelling for a bit to continue work on my documentary, "Otherworldly Amor". Also, I have a new book project in the works and I will be visiting an experiencer to document their case. Exciting stuff! Once I'm back, we'll record a couple more episodes AND we have a little surprise for April 2019, stay tuned. 

Ok… back to the show and we’ve got a weird one for ya… let’s talk about the mysterious case of Lerina Garcia.

On July 16, 2008 a woman named Lerina Garcia was struggling with some recent changes in her life and turned to the internet for some help. Her post originally appeared on a Spanish language website called Tendencias21 (which translates to Trends21). I have access to her original post and the link is below. We did use Google Translate so some of the quotes we used are a bit rough. She wrote, “I think I've jumped into a parallel universe. I find it hard to tell because everyone will believe that I am a psychotic, and nobody will believe me. Please, if someone has had a similar experience, write me an email.”
