About the Show:

I decided to make this episode a little different than normal. Similar to episode 92 where I talk about Getting out to vote.  I just wanted to reflect on some thoughts that I have around the election - non-partisan style -  and where we go from here. I hope you enjoy this episode and some of the stories that I share.

I do monologues from time to time and this is a chance to hear what I am thinking out loud.

We will be back to our normal programming next week.

What do you do with 95,000 Acres and 135+ miles of a river? You create the Buffalo National River and Park. The first National River in the United States was established in 1972.

We sat down with Terrie Martindale, Board President of the Buffalo National River Partners, and Cassie Branstetter, a U. S. Park Ranger. 19 Sep 2022Springdale’s Joe Donaldson and His Family Have Managed To Build The Largest Destination Furniture Store In Arkansas00:49:47

About the Show:

We sat down with Joe Donaldson, Owner, and President of Sam’s Furniture in Springdale, Arkansas.

Joe is a second-generation furniture store owner who learned the business from

his Mother and Father, Sam and Becky Donaldson.  Sam, a successful business leader in the corporate world, moved his family to Northwest Arkansas in the early 90s. Joe’s dad was the President of Long’s Drugs which was a large drugstore chain based in California. They were eventually purchased by CVS/Pharmacy.

Sam retired from Long’s and set his family up in Springdale but it wasn’t long before he started what would become Sam’s Furniture.  They started with a small operation in downtown Springdale and eventually grew and moved their location to a big plot of land right off I-49 in Springdale.

Joe served in the military, and when he retired, he returned to Northwest Arkansas to work with his dad, eventually taking over the store in 2005.

He has led Sam’s Furniture and turned it into a Destination Furniture store where people go just to hang out as much as they do to buy furniture. According to Joe, it is not uncommon to see many men in the “Man Cave” at the store watching football games and enjoying free hot dogs and soda on weekends.   There is also a place for kids with a vast Arcade and plenty of things to do.

The best part about Joe’s success is that he has worked hard to support several nonprofit groups in the area, including Second Milk which provides Milk and food to malnourished children in Malawi and three other African nations.

Finally, Joe shared some tips on his company's success. It begins and ends with the people that work at Sam’s Furniture.  He said that in business If you serve your people the same way you serve customers, you will never have a problem.

06 Jun 2022It’s Never Too Late to Learn - Adult Education Options in Northwest Arkansas00:38:37

About the Show:

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

  • Gandhi

At least for the last 150 years, education has been an essential part of society.

Every industrialized nation puts a high value on education and credentials.  One thing that is probably lost on most Americans is that higher education isn’t always the goal for all. Only one-third of the US population has a college education, while two-thirds have a High School Diploma.  Many individuals have been priced out of higher education due to the cost and commitment required.  Still, some are left out because they never finished High School.

About 10% of the U.S. Population never finishes High School.  In our research on this subject, we discovered that this statistic alone could be incentive enough to encourage those to get their GED.

The stakes for those that don’t get a High School diploma are undoubtedly high.

According to a recently released CDC Study,

“Again and again, the trends across educational levels indicate that adults with no high school diploma or GED are consistently at the greatest risk for the leading causes of disease and death.”

If you are part of this group, our goal is not to bring you down or shame you. It’s quite the opposite. We want to encourage you that it is never too late to get your GED and improve your life skills in many areas.

We recently sat down with Jessica Ferguson and Ahu Johnson from the Stephen M. Percival Adult Education Program to learn more about available Adult Education and learning options.

This Adult Education program is part of the Fayetteville Public School System. They offer Adult Education classes for those that want to get their GED, Citizenship, ESL, Job Training, and Workplace classes. The options are endless, and the opportunities are there for people in Northwest Arkansas to improve their situation through the classes offered by the Adult Education program.

30 Jan 2023Chris Thompson found Northwest Arkansas Fertile ground to develop his App Sober Sidekick00:46:56

About the Show:

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Albert Einstein

When Chris Thompson hit rock bottom on Thanksgiving Day 2018, he realized that alcohol was his only solution and that his best thinking had gotten him there. Faced with overcoming his ego, Chris took a leap of faith and launched a sobriety support app to help others, transforming his suffering and shame into purpose.

"Recovery isn't about overcoming alcohol or drugs; it's overcoming ego. Alcohol and drugs are just the fuel that makes you so attached to your ego and so much in self-preservation mode. Fear driven. And fear only comes from the ego. It's about protecting a conception of yourself that isn't even real."

Chris Thompson

Chris Thompson is the founder of Sober Sidekick, an app that helps people in recovery stay connected and overcome isolation. He is a former college athlete and entrepreneur who has been in recovery for four years.

Chris Thompson was an ambitious college athlete who had just started his first business and felt invincible. However, when a difficult situation arose, alcohol became his only solution for all his problems. On Thanksgiving Day, he woke up on the sidewalk for the fourth consecutive day, feeling hopeless and isolated. He realized his best thinking had gotten him there, and he decided that today would be his day one. He called a hotline, sought treatment, and eventually found his way to a sober living facility. With his friends' help, he could commit to recovery and put his goal of sobriety first. He channeled his ambition into creating The Sober Sidekick app, which allowed people in recovery to connect and support each other and saw their suffering and shame be transformed into purpose.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

1. Everyone has an opportunity to be in recovery from anything - not just drugs or alcohol.

2. What if today was the day that you made that change?

3. How can an algorithm be created so that no one ever goes without support?

4. Why Chris moved to Northwest Arkansas and what this area has meant to him.

30 Nov 2020The Show Must Go On!00:50:12

About the Show:

We sat down with Martin Miller, Executive Director of Theatre Squared in downtown Fayetteville right before the pandemic hit us like a ton of bricks.  At the time, I was excited to learn about the upcoming theatre season and all that Martin and his team had in store for Northwest Arkansas.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 had other plans.

I took a tour of the beautiful building located on the corner of Spring and West Street.  The building features a soaring lobby with plenty of glass, wood, and iron to make you feel super impressed that a facility of this caliber is in Northwest Arkansas, and that isn’t even the highlight of the building.

It’s the theatre’s themselves, the West Theatre the larger of the two, and the Spring Theatre, which is the crown jewel of this building. Imagine intimate settings, excellent sightlines from any seat, and the latest technological bells and whistles that you might only find on or off-Broadway right here in the Ozarks.

Yes, we are proud to feature Theatre Squared on this podcast, and we didn’t want to wait any longer to have Martin tell his story.

Enjoy this episode of the podcast and learn more about how Martin and his team address the pandemic and come up with creative ways to make sure that the Show Must Go On!

19 Jul 2021A New Remote Work Hub in Bentonville with Common00:28:17

About the Show:

It took a minute to release this episode, but we believe it is better late than never. We recently sat down with Matthew Micksin, Senior Director of Real Estate with Common, to discuss his company’s entrance into the Real Estate market in Northwest Arkansas. Common is one of the nations leading residential brands and operating platforms for Multi-Family developments.

Blue Crane, a development and real estate company part of The Runway Group and based in Bentonville, answered an RFP from Common to build a new style of real estate development for today’s workers in Bentonville.

Whether you are remotely working from home with a local company or a firm on the West or East Coast, there will be living units ideally suited for this new lifestyle - counits, microunits, or traditional apartments, to name a few.

Hear all about how Blue Crane was one of five finalists, out of 29, for Common’s Remote Work Hub. The other finalists include New Orleans, Ogden, Utah, Rocky Mount, NC, and Rochester, NY. Common will pursue projects with all of these locations.

It seems that Common and Blue Crane are figuring out ways to capitalize on some of the work/life changes that have taken place partly because of the pandemic and partly because each new generation demands a fresh take on the way that we live and work.

11 Oct 2021Fly XNA with Alex Holder English00:41:16

About the Show:

The pandemic has been delayed or postponed a lot over the last 20 months and today’s episode is no exception.

We originally sat down with Alex Holder English, Public Relations and Marketing Specialist with XNA Northwest Arkansas National Airport, in February 2020. Rob Smith from the NWA Council joined us as well. We had a great conversation about the growth and trajectory of the airport and the region as a whole. We planned to release that episode but then air travel around the nation ground to a halt so we decided to delay the release of this episode.

Fast forward 20 months and we found time to sit down with Alex and discuss some of the changes to air travel and updates that have been made at the airport including the upcoming airport expansion and a facelift that will make it easier to enter the terminal from the parking lot and parking garage.

If you’ve ever had a question about the airport or what airlines will be coming our way - We’re looking at you Southwest - this is the podcast episode to listen to.

Alex doesn’t disappoint.

19 Apr 2021James Farmer and Easy Bins are Connecting The Market To Your Door in Northwest Arkansas00:49:40

About the Show:

We recently sat down with EasyBins Founder James Farmer. Known as the Instacart of Northwest Arkansas, EasyBins takes inspiration from the familiar concept of “connecting the store to your door” and offers a unique service, “connecting the market to your door.”

Unlike other grocery delivery apps, EasyBins removes the physical store from the equation and allows users to create a basket to fill with products from various stores and have those products delivered right to their doorstep within 12 hours.

Before starting EasyBins, James served as the President of The Harvest Group, which in the mid-2010s was growing at such a fast rate that James and his partners “could feel that we were capping the business out.”

He began to explore his options.

James loved retail and knew he wanted to get physically closer to the product and the customer.

James sold his stake in The Harvest Group. He proceeded to move into a new venture, called NiteOwl. After being mistaken for an adult entertainment store several times, James and his team promptly renamed their startup to EasyBins.

Listen in as James goes on to share how the pandemic saved EasyBins thousands of dollars in marketing spending and shortened their plans for the company down from five years to less than one. James firmly believes that, for entrepreneurs everywhere, now is the time to embrace the “pandemic pivot” and seek out and seize opportunities.

We sat down with Kalene Griffith, President, and CEO, who, along with her fantastic team run, Visit Bentonville.  There is so much that goes into being an Ambassador for an area like Bentonville, and Kalene and her team make it look easy.  Of course, the pandemic has created challenges for everyone. Still, Visit Bentonville has become a partner and supporter of local programs like “Be Safe Be Smart,” which help promote our community’s safety and enhance our visitors’ confidence.

While many of the events mentioned in this episode were either canceled or postponed, Kalene has figured out ways to promote alternate events, online offerings, and safe practices to keep people coming to the area to enjoy the beauty of the Ozarks.

Here are some cool statistics that Kalene shared with us on this episode:

More people travel by car to Bentonville from Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Chicago than any other city.

There are 300 Restaurants in Bentonville

There are 22 Hotels in Bentonville

There are more than 150 miles of bike trails in the local region.

03 Oct 2022With the Opening of Northwest Arkansas’ Bauhaus Biergarten We Can Now Celebrate Oktoberfest Properly00:36:29

About the Show:

In this podcast episode, we sit down with Chef Jennifer Hill Booker, Co-Owner of the Bauhaus Biergarten in Downtown Springdale.  Chef Jennifer shared her origin story from birth in Ann Arbor to living in NYC and ending up in Tulsa, OK, with her parents. From an early age, Chef Jennifer was encouraged to cook and experiment in the kitchen.  She grew up watching Julia Child and finding comfort and a home in the kitchen creating good food.

Several years later, while her husband was stationed in Germany, Chef Jennifer attended Le Cordone Bleu, where she honed her culinary skills. If her name sounds familiar, that is because Chef Jennifer was initially invited to Northwest Arkansas by the Roots Festival team to showcase her culinary skills.

We also ran into Chef Jennifer at the Cureate program in Northwest Arkansas. Cureate works with Food Entrepreneurs looking to expand their brand and learn and fine-tune the business side of things.

You can learn more about Cureate on episode 150 of the podcast when we sat down with Cureate founder Kim Bryden.

The Bauhaus Biergarten is the only authentic Beer Garden in Northwest Arkansas. The Biergarten will feature some of the best beers from Germany and an assortment of Schnitzels, Wurst, Pretzels, Sauerkraut, and fresh whole-grain mustard.  They even have a Stein club for those who want their own Beer Stein to use when they visit Bauhaus Biergarten.

The address for Bauhaus Biergarten is 326 Holcomb St, Springdale, AR 72764

18 Jan 2021Hope is Invented Every Day00:18:59

About the Show:

Hope is invented every day. ~ James Baldwin

Over this past year, I have developed a greater appreciation for James Baldwin's writings. I have read many of his books and essays which seem like they could have been written yesterday. Most recently, I came across this quote: "Hope is invented every day," in Princeton Professor Eddie Glaude's recent book, "Begin Again: James Baldwin's America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own." This statement is profound on its own, but I think it takes on a deeper meaning when considering the context in which it was uttered. It's akin to the impact of understanding King's context for his 1963 Letter From The Birmingham Jail, from which comes the oft-quoted "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" and "justice too long delayed is justice denied." King penned this lofty resolute open letter on peace, justice, and love from a narrow southern jail cell, in which King was placed following a peaceful march for civil rights on Good Friday 1963.

Baldwin survived three of his personal friends, who were tragically murdered for their work towards civil rights in just five years: Medgar Evers (1963), Malcolm X (1965), and Martin Luther King, Jr. (1968). As recounted in Glaude's book, Baldwin had a tough time dealing with the loss of King, who he called "America's Apostle of Love." Baldwin went into a deep depression and even attempted suicide after this traumatic event. In this context, Baldwin summoned his strength and courageously stated that "Hope is invented every day."

Context is critical, and the echo of this 1968 quote reverberates today. Then, we were deeply involved in the Vietnam War, losing many soldiers in the Tet Offensive. We tragically lost King to an assassination in April and Bobby Kennedy in June. We experienced riots in every major city from coast to coast. Now, we have seemingly insurmountable political and social divides, a global pandemic, a struggling economy, and extremist enemies of the State, both foreign and domestic. While acknowledging the hurts of the past and the troubles at hand, this quote recognizes that it takes a willful determination to be hopeful. We all must manufacture it, cultivate it and nurture it.

Further, the nature of hope is fragile, and inventing it is a daily process. Last week's hope won't cut it. It may grow stale or perhaps even be erased by intervening bad news.

This weekend we remember Martin Luther King, Jr. and his enduring legacy, despite the swirling winds of division that would seek to blow out the flame of hope. I encourage each of us to heed his friend James Baldwin's words and summon the strength to invent hope every day.

About the Show:

This week we sit down with Anthony Sumlin. Anthony is one of the first friends that our host Randy made in Northwest Arkansas when he moved here back in 2014. Anthony has introduced the I am Northwest Arkansas podcast to many of his friends and several organizations that have been guests on the podcast.

Since Anthony had been instrumental in helping us tell a lot of stories about what makes NWA such a great place to live, we would turn the tables on him and have him on the show to tell his story.

05 Jul 2021Ben Clark and B-Unlimited Provide the Best Custom Apparel in Northwest Arkansas and Beyond00:44:21

About the Show:

Sometimes delays in life work out to your advantage. This episode is an example of that. We initially sat down with Ben Clark, Owner of Custom Apparel maker B-Unlimited last February 2020.

And then the pandemic hit.

We decided to hold off on releasing that episode.  It was a good one, but Ben thought it would be better to discuss how they survived the pandemic and grew in the process by holding on to as many folks as they could. Ben encouraged his team to focus on getting one percent better every day, which became the company mantra.

Ben discovered new ways to collaborate with other firms and organizations during the pandemic.  Locally, B-Unlimited played a significant role in helping organizations raise money through T-Shirt sales in addition to timely donations to a lot of Service workers in the area.  Ben also connected with some other apparel companies and decided that now was the best time to consider growing the organization despite the pandemic running full tilt.  This foresight and willingness to try new things are paying off handsomely for Ben and the B-Unlimited team.

17 May 2021Jake Lewis and Woodworx Turns Recycled Wood Into Art Here in Northwest Arkansas00:37:43

About the Show:

We recently sat down with Jake Lewis, the founder of Woodworx Workshop. Jake is a  talented artist and woodworker.  He learned to marry his passion for woodworking and art with business. He takes recycled wood and repurposes them into works of art for all to enjoy - see some of the examples in the Show Notes below.

I spent some time in Jake’s tidy little workshop just off the Greenway on the Fayetteville and Johnson line, where I got a chance to watch work on one of his new creations, and then we sat down to talk shop - no pun intended.

Jake shared an example of how he learned to handle wood and the tools necessary to make his works of art.  He is pretty much self-taught, and from the looks of the art that he is creating, he had a great teacher.  Jake attends many Craft Fairs around the State and is a regular fixture at the Bentonville Market, Ozark Natural Foods, and the Velvet Otter

About the Guests:

This podcast episode offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of Brittany and Amin, a young couple who uprooted from New York to Northwest Arkansas just before the pandemic turned the world upside down. With Amin's new job as their compass, they took a leap of faith into the unknown. Little did they realize how much their big move would pay off.

Hailing from disparate parts of North America initially, neither Brittany nor Amin knew much about Arkansas before landing there. In fact, the only news they ever heard about the state involved some sort of tragedy. To counter the bad press, the duo started documenting their experience through an Instagram account called "NWA Transplants." They hoped to showcase the many positives of living in Northwest Arkansas that aren't visible from afar.

Over time, Brittany and Amin have evolved their social media style and built connections by highlighting local events, the arts, music, small businesses, and more hidden gems. As Brittany notes, they wanted to share "what this area is really like when you're living there." From finding community during the first wave of COVID-19 to discovering common interests through happenstance meetings, the couple has embraced the opportunities around them to build a life—and make an impact.

Episode Summary:

The conversation covers their initial reservations about moving, the surprising discoveries upon arrival, and the evolving landscape of NWA. They share insights into the importance of dental health, the joy of finding community, and the unexpected encounters that have enriched their lives. Randy and his guests also discuss the challenges of housing, the power of social media storytelling, and the future aspirations for their platform.

01 Jun 2020Time for a Change00:30:03

About the Show:

This is not a normal episode of I am Northwest Arkansas.

I struggled all week with the events happening in our country. With the Pandemic Death Toll topping 100,000 people in just 120 days and the senseless murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day, I had to stop for a second and process what was actually going on.

This episode is definitely a departure from what you find on the I am Northwest Arkansas Podcast but I realized that I have to be true to myself and my feelings otherwise this is just another exercise without any real meaning or soul.

I pray that you find comfort in my thoughts and words and that, if needed, they bring you to a place of reconciliation that all is not well in our great country and it will take the combined efforts of everyone to solve this problem.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Margaret Mead

We should be back to regular programming next week but we will be checking in on you from time to time.

13 Jan 2020Bill Schwab and his Pryor commitment to the History of Arkansas00:33:20

About the Show:

I recently met Bill Schwab at a local Rotary meeting. He was the guest speaker that day and I was blown away by his work with the David and Barbara Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History. Bill shared one story after another about all that they’ve already done at the Pryor Center and everything that he as the Executive Director, and his team of seven plan to do to “Collect, Preserve and Connect!” all of Arkansas.   Located on the square in downtown Fayetteville the Pryor Center provides services to the whole state including a growing repository of Arkansas history gathered from every community across the state and made available to public schools, universities, researchers, documentarians, and anyone interested in History.

Bill gives us a glimpse at the inner workings of the Pryor Center on this episode.

At I am Northwest Arkansas, we love both Tea and Coffee. They are both beverages that we enjoy every morning. Sometimes we mix it up and do a week of tea and a week of coffee. It just depends on how we feel.  We recently sat down with an expert in Tea and Tea Making, Ola Atilola from ASAMI Teas. ASAMI Teas is a local Tea company specializing in teas from the African continent.

According to Ola, his goal is to provide healthy teas to the broadest audience possible.

11 Jul 2022It's Never Too Late To Learn To Ride A Bike In Northwest Arkansas - A Conversation With TRAILBLAZERS00:35:07

About the Show:

I can remember when I learned to ride a bike. I was about four years old and had a bike with training wheels. I couldn’t wait to get those training wheels off so I could ride on two wheels like the big kids in our neighborhood.

I know that a lot of people don’t have that shared experience.

According to a recent poll, about 100 million Americans bike each year in the United States. But, there are two big obstacles that keep more people off bikes than on - traffic safety while riding a bike and the lack of access to a working bicycle.

In an area like Northwest Arkansas, with miles and miles of bike trails, it almost feels like everyone here should own a bike and know how to ride, but that is not the case.  That’s where an organization like Trailblazers + ETHIC comes in to bridge the gap and create awareness around bicycling and bicycling safety.

Anya Bruhin is the Bike Education Program Manager with Trailblazers + ETHIC. She joined us on the podcast to discuss the Adult Bike Education  Adult First Ride,” program open to anyone who never learned how to ride a bike.

Trailblazers+ ETHIC has created a program for adults to get on a bike, even if they don’t own one - they will make one available for you -  and learn how to ride.  There is no judgment, only encouragement for those who have never learned to ride a bike before becoming adults.

Now is their chance!

Listen to this episode and learn how you can also find out what all the fuss is about when biking here in Northwest Arkansas.  The trail system will continue growing, which means more opportunities for you to safely ride a bike.  We hope to see you out there on the Razorback Greenway soon.

If you see someone with an, I am Northwest Arkansas bike jersey make sure you say hello!

07 Nov 2022Adventure Subaru is Raising The Bar When It Comes to Selling Cars and Giving Back to The Community Here in Northwest Arkansas00:37:41

About the Show:

We spoke with the folks at Adventure Subaru in Fayetteville. Danielle Dotson, Marketing Manager, Kelley Carey, HR Manager, Brent Baker, GM, and Managing Partner. They gave us an inside view of the super successful dealership that has tapped into the outdoor enthusiast here in Northwest Arkansas.

Adventure Subaru was the last piece of an automotive dealership collection owned by Don Nelms. Don is a bit of a legend in Northwest Arkansas, establishing the “Service in the Nelms tradition,” where Adventure Subaru carries this mantle by focusing on taking care of the customer first and always doing the right thing.

This method is a refreshing approach to auto sales and service where you don’t feel “sold to” but rather taken care of.

Brent shared his journey from Austin to partnering up with Don and why he is so excited about Northwest Arkansas and the future of car sales, new electronic vehicle models from Subaru, and why in 2022 Adventure Subaru won the Subaru Love Promise Retailer of the Year

Finally, we discussed Adventures Subaru’s mission to give back to the local community as much as possible. So it would be no surprise that Adventure Subaru has given back more than 3+ Million dollars to the Northwest Arkansas community for programs like Second Hand Smoke and Nate Walls, Single Parent Scholarship Fund, The Roots Festival, and many more. It is one of the reasons why you see the Adventure Subaru name tied to so many great causes and events.

While they do not sponsor this podcast, we encourage you to check them out if you need a new or used car.  Subarus have one of the highest reliability factors in the auto industry, and most models are ideally suited for the topography here in the Ozarks.

If you visit, please tell them the good folks at the I am Northwest Arkansas podcast sent you.

05 Sep 2022From 1800s to Today: Labor Day Reflections 202200:21:18

About the Show:

It’s Labor Day here in the United States. The first Monday of September marks the end of Summer and the start of School in some areas - except NWA, where our kids have been in school for several weeks now, and maybe a reason to put away white until next year - but that might not be a thing.

Labor Day became official back in the late 1880s when labor movements began gaining steam while fighting for wages and, more importantly, better working conditions and an 8-hour workday.

In 1894 after dealing with the Pullman Railway Car strike, President Grover Cleveland struck a conciliatory tone by making Labor Day a national holiday.  Around the world, they honor workers on May 1st, which is called May Day. For a while here in the US, we celebrated May Day and Labor Day. Still, the latter eventually won out for a variety of reasons, including the fact that the Marxist International Socialist Congress started May Day.

So here we are in our country's new era of work and labor. Coming out of the Pandemic has forced everyone to reconsider how they do work and, more importantly, what work should look like. Many of us got used to working from home and the flexibility this provides.  This is a far cry from the factories and labor-intensive industries that dotted our country when Labor Day started.

There is undoubtedly a movement underfoot to improve working conditions and opportunities here in the US, and here in Northwest Arkansas. Many programs are available to people who want to pivot in their careers and find new meaningful work, and many upskilling programs are coming online every day.

We even featured the excellent folks from Skills Lab Training on episode 109 of the podcast, where we talked about ways that the next generation of workers here in Northwest Arkansas are being prepared for success in the labor force.

The future does look bright, and there is opportunity everywhere.

Happy Labor Day!
