In this episode we continue our exploration of The Mound by HP Lovecraft and Zealia Bishop. Firstly we uncover the history and evolution of what is now called the Cthulhu Mythos - how it emerged in Lovecraft's writings and how it was developed by other authors. Following on from our reading of the classic tale from MR James, in this episode we take a look back on the 1972 screen version directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark for the BBC A Ghost Story for Christmas series, starring Peter Vaughan and Clive Swift. 

In this penultimate chapter of the history of Universal horror we look at two late monsters movies from 1957, the forgotten dinosaur adventure The Land Unknown and the unique alien menace of The Monolith Monsters. We also learn how Universal dealt with new rivals from across the pond, Hammer Films! 

In this chapter we look at the last stand of the Universal monsters, the chapter of the saga where the Count, the Frankenstein Monster, and the Wolf Man meet up at the House of Dracula (1945)!

Directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark, and originally shown on Christmas Eve 1971, The Stalls of Barchester was the very first of the BBC's much loved Ghost Story for Christmas series. Mr Jim hands round the mulled wine and mince pies, and fires up the old DVD player to give a commentary on this televisual incarnation of the famous ghost story by MR James.
