25 Oct 2022 | An interview with Anneka Rice on my mental health journey | 00:26:08
I wanted to start the podcast with a very special episode and an incredibly special person who has known me for many years. Anneka Rice is a TV presenter, radio host, author and artist who has known me since I was a little girl. She's witnessed a lot of my journey, and I thought there was no better way to begin the podcast than to have her to ask me a few questions so that you can all get to know me a little better and understand why I'm really doing this podcast. Anneka has witnessed my ongoing struggle with OCD and an eating disorder. In this interview she asks me about my early childhood and the impact that it might have had on my mental health, my school life and the early manifestations of the OCD and anorexia. We also discuss what help I have received over the years and how I struggled during my 20s and battled my illnesses alongside being a lawyer. This conversation will hopefully give you a bit of an insight into my journey and as the series continues you will get to know me more! 01 Nov 2022 | Recovering from eating disorders and changing the way we speak to ourselves with Emmy Brunner | 00:47:19
Today, I'm joined by the wonderful Emmy Brunner. Emmy is a master of many. She's a psychotherapist, personal empowerment and transformation coach, hypnotherapist, CEO of the Recover Clinic in London and a bestselling author. As a teenager, Emmy suffered from anorexia and had a tendency to self-harm which led her into a series of abusive relationships. It was only when she had a baby that she realised something had to change. Emmy then left her partner and worked hard at improving her life for herself and her daughter, realising she'd created a valuable toolkit for herself. She decided to train as a psychotherapist and to set up The Recover Clinic. Emmy specialises in helping people recover from anxiety, eating disorders and depression. And in today's episode, we talk about how to have a better relationship with ourselves, how to break free from your own rules, and the holistic approach to treatment where we can take into account both the mind and the body. Emmy's ongoing mission is to help people live a joyful life and to overcome their limiting beliefs. I can't wait for you to listen to this incredibly powerful conversation. 03 Nov 2022 | HEALING 101: What is OCD? with Professor David Veale | 00:20:44
I am honoured to be joined today by Professor David Veale, a consultant psychiatrist in London who specialises in obsessive compulsive disorder. As you might already know, I have frustratingly suffered from this mental health condition for many years now, but it always amazes me how little people actually know about it. The aim of this episode is to ask Professor Veale the questions you might have never had the opportunity to ask and to educate those of you who might want to know more about the condition and how you might be able to treat it. So whether it's beneficial for you or for a friend, I hope that this episode with Professor David Veale helps put OCD into simple terms. 08 Nov 2022 | Why we still fail to recognise PTSD with Radhika Sanghani | 00:36:44
I am honoured to be joined for today's episode by the award winning journalist and author Radhika Sanghani. Radhika regularly writes on women's issues and lifestyle topics for titles such as The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, The Guardian, the BBC, Grazia and Elle Magazine. Radhika also gave an extremely successful TEDx talk called How to Love Yourself and is now a body positive campaigner. Her third novel, which was published at the start of 2022, is called 30 Things I Love About Myself and is loosely based on her own self-love journey. You might be sitting there thinking Radhika has had it easy and has a career that you can't help but be jealous of. But the truth is, Radhika has had her own struggles. In her twenties, she was diagnosed with PTSD as a result of a coach crash that she survived in Thailand. She wrote an article about how she struggled to come to terms with her own situation because of the way society as a whole views this mental health disorder as a result of her own experience. She is working towards redefining our definition of PTSD and is working towards crushing the stigma that still surrounds it. 15 Nov 2022 | Alexandra Shulman on her crippling anxiety and rejecting stereotypes | 00:32:21
I am thrilled to be joined today by one of my career idols, Alexandra Shulman. Alexandra is a former British Vogue editor, the longest standing editor in Vogue's history and someone I've looked up to for many years. You may have thought that she had it all, but even the strongest of people are fighting their own battles. Today, I wanted to ask her about her life before Vogue, how she felt when she was criticised for not looking like the stereotypical Vogue editor and how she coped juggling both motherhood and an unstoppable career. I'm so grateful to Alex for opening up on this episode and for sharing her vulnerabilities as it just proves how insecurities have an impact on all of us. 17 Nov 2022 | HEALING 101: What to eat for anxiety with Rosemary Ferguson | 00:25:12
I'm thrilled to be joined today by former model, turned nutritional therapist and author, Rosemary Ferguson. Food is a tricky subject for many of us, myself included, and I was keen to find out what sparked her interest in nutrition, having come from a modelling background qualifying as a nutritionist and naturopath in 2009. Whereas now she works from a central London clinic whilst writing for publications such as Vogue and Tatler. Rosemary is passionate about the power of good nutrition and is very vocal about how crucial our diets are for reducing anxiety and ultimately improving our mental health. 22 Nov 2022 | Battling schizophrenia and one life changing moment with Jonny Benjamin and Neil Laybourn | 00:32:56
I am thrilled to be joined by not one but two wonderful men for today's episode. Jonny Benjamin and Neil Laybourn first met in early 2008 when Neil approached Jonny who was sitting on the edge of Waterloo Bridge and asked if he was alright. The conversation that followed changed their lives forever. Fast forward 14 years and a huge social media campaign later and the two are not only great friends but work together to improve the public's understanding of mental health and to champion suicide prevention. Their story proves the role we can all play in helping each other and has helped to eradicate the stigma that surrounds schizophrenia and suicide by bravely sharing their story. They have opened doors for so many others to do the same. I'm so thrilled to be talking to them both today and to hear about how that day changed both their lives. This conversation really struck a chord with me. It's powerful, inspiring, and proves that we can have faith in humanity. 24 Nov 2022 | HEALING 101: What can we do to prevent suicide? with Professor Rory O'Connor | 00:15:51
On today's Healing 101, I'm joined by Professor Rory O'Connor, the professor of health psychology at Glasgow University and director of the Suicidal Behaviour Research Laboratory, the leading suicide and self-harm research group in Scotland. He is also the author of When It Is Darkest Why People Die by Suicide and What We Can Do to Prevent It. Suicide can affect any one of us, and one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds. Yet, despite the scale of the devastation for family members and friends, suicide is still poorly understood. In today's episode, Professor O'Connor helps to untangle the complex reasons behind suicide and dispels any unhelpful myths for those who might be trying to help someone vulnerable. It will provide indispensable advice on communication and stresses the importance of listening to fears and anxieties without judgment. 29 Nov 2022 | Christa D'Souza on learning how to overcome an eating disorder | 00:39:09
Christa D'Souza is a mother and a British features journalist who contributes to many publications, including British Vogue, The Guardian, The Sunday Times and many more. Christa is known for her articles, which often cover body issues such as ageing, anorexia and cosmetic surgery. Her writing is often praised for her humour and honesty and sometimes her controversial subject matter. I wanted to speak to Christa today to discuss something she hasn't spoken about in too much detail before - her own struggle with an eating disorder and addictions. Christa is so unbelievably open in this conversation and discusses how she has learned to turn her previous pain into her power. 01 Dec 2022 | HEALING 101: Understanding anorexia with Dr Michael Strober | 00:17:58
On today's healing one day one, I am talking to Dr. Michael Strober, a distinguished professor of psychiatry and the director of the Eating Disorders Program at the Neuropsychiatric Institute since 1982. His research centres on risk factors and eating disorders and the long term course outcome and treatment of them. As someone who has suffered from an eating disorder myself, this is an episode I was very keen to do. We discuss what to do if you think someone is on the verge of an eating disorder and why someone perhaps suffers from the disorder in the first place. 06 Dec 2022 | Theo Fennell on life before and after sobriety | 00:27:32
Today, I'm thrilled to be joined by the very talented jeweller, Theo Fennell. Or as he's otherwise known as the 'King of Bling' in the early days of Theo's career. He was a notable socialite who had a slightly unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Theo has since scaled down his partying and gave up alcohol many years ago. Theo has since opened up about his partying ways in his memoir called 'I Fear For This Boy'. It's focused entirely on his greatest accidents. One notable story being an alcohol fuelled presentation at Tiffany & Co, which I won't spoil, but it's definitely worth the read. Today I talk to him all about why he decided to stop drinking, how becoming sober has transformed his life and how his outlook on the world has changed as a result. 08 Dec 2022 | HEALING 101: What you should know about gambling addiction with Dr Timothy Fong | 00:29:28
On today's Healing 101 I am joined by Dr. Timothy Fong, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behaviour at UCLA. Dr. Fong specialises in addiction and today I am asking him about gambling disorders and why they're becoming increasingly prevalent in today's society. I asked him about how these disorders develop, what the signs are that someone's gambling is becoming a problem, and what impact gambling can have on our mental health. While it might be referred to as a hidden illness because there are no obvious signs or symptoms. The addiction is very similar to that of drugs and alcohol and I think it's important we understand the science behind why gambling is so addictive. 13 Dec 2022 | Charlie King shares his experience of living with body dysmorphia | 00:44:30
If you're a big fan of reality TV, some of you might be familiar with my next guest. Charlie King was once famed for his role on The Only Way Is Essex and known best for his very dramatic relationship with the one and only Gemma Collins. The series followed his attempts to become more of a man as he started changing what he wore and how he spoke in a bid to fit in. He then had a brief departure from the show during which time he came out as being gay. Since leaving the show in 2015, he has struggled with both depression and body dysmorphic disorder. The pandemic was a challenging time for all of us. And Charlie admits that psychologically he was not in a good place, which led him to get surgery on his nose. Charlie now uses his platform to call for mental health awareness on this issue, and I'm so glad to be able to get the chance to talk to him about it today. I am so thrilled to be kicking off Season 2 with the one and only Ruby Wax. Ruby has been a dream guest of mine since I had my first thought about starting this podcast. Ruby is now a bestselling author of mental health and runs Frazzled Cafe: an online space for people to connect when they’re not feeling ok. 19 Jan 2023 | HEALING 101: CBT made simple with Dr Tom Graham | 00:30:13
On today's HEALING 101, I am speaking to Dr. Tom Graham, a counselling psychologist and CBT therapist at Oxford Health Specialist Psychological Intervention Center. Many of you might have heard of the term CBT, but not a lot of people actually know what it is. Today's guest is Hope Virgo, a multi award winning mental health campaigner, an author and an international leading advocate for people with eating disorders. 09 Feb 2023 | HEALING 101: How to feel more resilient to life's challenges with Dr Sam Akbar | 00:28:21
In today's episode, I'm joined in the studio by a clinical psychologist with more than ten years of experience. Dr. Sam Akbar specialises in treating refugees with PTSD who have been tortured, survive war or sexual violence. And in 2022 released a book called Stress Alien How to Beat Stress and Build Resilience. There is no denying that life is stressful. We are living in a post-pandemic world where 81% of women are overworked, overwhelmed and exhausted. But Dr. Sam Akbar's book is just what every woman needs to feel calmer, less stressed, and more resilient to life's challenges. Today, I ask her about what we can do to develop more resilience, to cope with the ups and downs of life. How we can start understanding our minds more and why our brains waste into focus on the negative. I am honoured to be joined by Anne Robinson, established television presenter and journalist known for her assertive views and her frosty presenting style on one of my all time favourite game shows, The Weakest Link. In the 1960s, Anne was the first young female trainee at the Daily Mail newspaper. She worked at The Sunday Times and The Daily Mirror and then went on to host programmes such as Watchdog to Channel Four's Countdown. However, in her mid-thirties Anne began to drum up a reputation for being a heavy drinker, which began to overshadow her work. And after a fierce custody battle with her ex-husband, she lost joint custody of her daughter, then aged just two. This was the turning point that led to her seeking help and in today's interview Anne opens up about her battle with addiction and what got her onto the road to recovery. 23 Feb 2023 | HEALING 101: The many benefits of functional medicine with Deirdre Nazareth | 00:21:27
On today's HEALING 101, we are joined by Deirdre, or as I like to call her, Dede Nazareth, a friend of mine and a functional osteopath. Functional and osteopathic medicine both seek to find the root cause of illness by asking 'why' and considering things that may seem unrelated, such as treating skin conditions by treating the gut or treating headaches by analysing joints in the upper back. This practice understands that the body has an inherent capacity to heal itself when given what it needs and aims to restore balance in order to achieve total health and wellbeing. I can't wait to talk to DeDe today, who will discuss how we can use the functional medicine approach to improve our mental health. I am so thrilled to be joined today by a man on a mission to raise awareness of the reality of OCD, Shaun Flores. When people talk about OCD, they often talk about it as a quirk or something almost productive, but anyone who lives with OCD knows this couldn’t be further from the truth. Shaun Flores has suffered from OCD since he was 27. He initially struggled with obsessive thoughts about his sexuality and it quickly moved on to harm, in particular sexual assault. When these thoughts initially took hold, Shaun became depressed and life became a burden he no longer wanted to carry. In today’s episode, Shaun shares his story and talks about why there is an urgent need to develop new and better treatments for OCD - something which is also a big passion of mine. I hope for anyone listening who is living with OCD, that Shaun’s story will reassure you that you can in fact emerge stronger and better. I’m very excited to be joined today by Holly Baxter, a dietician, science educator, author, speaker and professional athlete in the sport of bodybuilding. Growing up in Tasmania, Holly had a heavy involvement in sports in her early life. However, when she began competing more seriously the emphasis on her performance and appearance set her up for an extremely difficult struggle with binge eating and bulimia which left her wondering whether she had any intrinsic value as a person. Like so many of us who have suffered with an eating disorder, she found the only thing that she could control in her life was what she ate. In this episode, Holly and I talk very candidly about the tricks the mind can play on you when you’re struggling with an eating disorder and how she got to a place where she was then able to ask for help. I am over the moon to be joined by Susannah Constantine to kick off our special women's mental health series. Susannah is a novelist, journalist and podcaster with over 25 years experience in the media. You also might know her as the host of What Not To Wear alongside Trinny Woodall. While the show might have been about helping women love themselves from the outside in, this conversation just proves how Susannah has come to understand that if you support the inside, the outside will shine. Susannah bravely opens about her struggle with alcohol addiction and why it took so long for her to realise how serious the problem was. So if you listen to this and begin to question your own relationship with alcohol, then it might just be time to stop making excuses and ask for help. On today’s episode, I am joined by Lisa Bryer, a film and documentary producer who is best known for producing the epic box office success, The Last King of Scotland, which won an Oscar and many BAFTA awards. 23 May 2023 | Tish Weinstock on her experience of pre natal depression and how she sought help | 00:19:40
Depression during and after pregnancy afflicts many people, and health care practitioners say that the pandemic has only worsened this mental health issue. These kinds of depression can include deep sadness, heightened anxiety and incessant exhaustion that makes it hard for sufferers to care for their families, let alone themselves. Today, I will be talking to Tish Weinstock, a former beauty editor of Vogue, who wrote a very brave article about her own experience with prenatal depression. In this episode, Tish talks about how hopeless and alone she felt was pregnant with her first child. And I asked her all about her own battle with depression and what steps she took towards her own recovery. I sincerely hope that by sharing this conversation, it might help reassure any other expectant or new mothers who are struggling. 30 May 2023 | Joanna Lumley on her experience of suffering a complete nervous breakdown | 00:43:14
I am so thrilled and actually very starstruck to be joined by the one and only Joanna Lumley on today’s episode. I grew up watching her on Absolutely Fabulous, have admired her work with the Gurkhas, and have been fascinated by her unconventional upbringing and theatrical career. It was an honour to speak to Joanna about her incredibly colourful life: her career ups and downs, the pressure she faced growing up and her attitude towards mental health in the modern world. Whilst Joanna’s view might be one you don’t necessarily agree with, we can’t deny that mental health has become a huge buzzword in society. There’s an epidemic of influencers that are speaking on mental health’s behalf with little understanding and I do think it’s very important we properly educate ourselves about mental health as well as how complicated and nuanced so much of it is rather than just jumping on the bandwagon. She is passionate about optimising physical and emotional wellness for women at all stages of life and has particular interest in early recognition and management of perimenopausal and menopausal syptoms. Menopause itself is a topic which is slowly becoming more publicly discussed but I still fear that many of us don’t know enough about the impact it might have on the quality of our lives. 06 Jun 2023 | Spencer Matthews on life after alcohol and the impact of brotherly loss | 00:43:00
On today’s episode, I am delighted to be speaking to Spencer Matthews, a successful entrepreneur, former Made in Chelsea cast member turned broadcaster and an incredible father of three children. Spencer is well known for his non-alcoholic drinks brand, Clean Co, which was created as a result of his unhealthy relationship with alcohol during his twenties which he saw as ‘an obstacle in his life that had to be removed’. Spencer talks openly about how much his life has changed since he made this decision as it put everything in perspective and allowed him to reassess his priorities. He has since gone on to conquer not only the drinks industry, but a number of extreme challenges including the Marathon De Sables and most recently he ventured to base camp of Mount Everest where he set out to find his oldest brother, Michael, who tragically disappeared while descending the mountain in 1999. I’m intrigued to speak to Spencer today about how he navigated the emotions that surfaced as a result of this recovery operation and how his attitude towards life has drastically changed in the last 10 years. 13 Jun 2023 | Alasdair Gill on his journey to rehab and finding comfort in his father's words | 00:40:24
Today, I'm speaking to chef and writer Alasdair Gill, the son of the well-known journalist AA Gill, about his own battle with addiction. Ali has spoken openly about how the words of his late father helped him to overcome his own addiction to drink and drugs. He explains how he hit rock bottom before finding the strength he needed to become sober two years ago with his father, Adrian, playing a crucial role in the breakthrough from Beyond the Grave. There were similarities between AA Gill’s personal struggle and Ali's, which were reflected in his father's memoir, which he penned after giving up alcohol aged 29. It was when Ali was presented with his memoir at a rehabilitation center near Edinburgh, which then instigated his own journey to sobriety. On today's Healing 101 I am joined once again by Dr. Timothy Fong, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behaviour at UCLA. Dr. Fong specialises in addiction and today I am asking him about Cannabis Addiction. A staggering fourteen million people have used cannabis in the UK, making it the most popular illicit drug. While not everyone who uses cannabis will become addicted, 11% of users will develop a cannabis addiction, with that figure rising to 16% if you used cannabis as a teen. Today, I ask Dr Fong to explain how cannabis addiction develops and whether CBD products are worth using for anxiety disorders. 20 Jun 2023 | Rory Bremner on being diagnosed with ADHD and learning how to use it to his advantage | 00:46:07
Today I am speaking to Rory Bremner, the famous British impressionist turned presenter, who made his name with his impersonation of Tony Blair which was so near the knuckle that the then Prime Minister actually asked him to write his speeches. However, beneath the facade, Rory has always struggled with his emotions and admits to suffering from big highs and lows. He was diagnosed with depression which hit him at unexpected moments and for many years, his ADHD and dyspraxia were ignored which in turn ended up effecting his movement, coordination and concentration. He ended up being diagnosed with the ADHD whilst he was making a BBC documentary and described it as ‘like having a brain like a pinball machine’. He also referred to his symptoms as ‘failures’, which they’re obviously not, but it’s these moments that are the most powerful as they show a true insight into the way he struggled to come to terms with the diagnosis. In this episode Rory speaks candidly about how he has learned to turn his ADHD to his advantage and why lists are his life line. You might even get a snippet of him performing! 27 Jun 2023 | Shocka on hitting rock bottom and the importance of self love | 00:41:15
Today I am speaking to Shocka, a Grime artist who rose to prominence as part of the Tottenham trio, Marvell. Shocka has seen the real highs and extreme lows of show business, having seen sudden success and sudden failure, from performing to packed out arena tours alongside famous names such as Skepta to abruptly being dropped by his record company. Shocka has been brutally honest about the consequences on his mental health and struggled when everything came crashing down. He says that ‘the reason why he thinks it all went downhill for him is because he never had a balance of struggle and success and when you don’t have that balance and it starts going downhill then you won’t know how to deal with that.’ He’s had a couple more recent breakdowns, but has recently come to the realisation that most people who suffer from mental health and depression are suffering from low self image and that is something he is trying to change. I am speaking to him today about why he wanted to open up about his mental health battle, his experience of being sectioned and how he has learnt to manage his manic depression. For instance, men suffering from severe depression, the rate of erectile dysfunction may reach up to 90%. 11 Jul 2023 | Prof Fiona McNicholas on eating disorders in children and adolescents | 00:47:54
On today’s summer special we are joined by Professor Fiona McNicholas, a Consultant in child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Her clinical interests are eating disorders and I wanted to take the opportunity today to ask her about the differences between anorexia, bulimia and binge eating and particularly how this disorder impacts children and adolescence. Having suffered from an eating disorder which started when I was 12 years old, I’m always keen to learn more about how treatments are becoming more effective and the impact that early intervention can make. I was pleased to hear that the level of support needed for an eating disorder is now being recognised but I think one of the biggest takeaways from the conversation is that we shouldn’t ignore that parents or close friends watching their children suffer with these disorders may need to be supported too. Peter Tyrer is the Professor of Community Psychiatry in the Centre for Mental Health in the Division of Experimental Medicine. Much of his recent work has been focused around personality disorders. Personality disturbance is very common, not just in psychiatric practice, and this importance has been largely unrecognized as the knowledge around this particular disorder is very poor. Many people feel very strongly about the term personality disorder but it’s a term that is misunderstood by almost everyone and needs to go. In this episode, Peter teaches us about the various different types of personality disorders, why they can be tricky to treat and the big question as to whether we are born with our personality or it’s shaped over time. Today, I speak to Louise all about mental health and emotional wellbeing in the perimenopause and menopause, particularly the psychological symptoms and ask her about how we can support our mental health during these changes.
