04 Nov 2022S4, Ep 11: Celebrate #LoveYourRedHairDay With Us & Scalp Talk with Canviiy’s Founder, Sherrel Sampson00:44:48

We're back! November 5th is National #LoveYourRedHairDay. Adrienne + Stephanie created this day in 2015 to celebrate red hair and spread confidence throughout the world. On this special day, H2BAR is launching Finally Have Lashes -- a line of redhead mascaras in shades of auburn, brown and black. Head to https://shop.howtobearedhead.com/ and shop. It all drops at 12AM EST on November 5th!

At the end of the episode, Adrienne + Stephanie talk about how they developed Finally Have Lashes, the direction of the H2BAR Box, how redheads are reacting to Finally Have Brows, and more products launching in 2023.

It wouldn't be an H2BAR podcast without talking about redhead-approved beauty products. We're excited to welcome Canviiy’s Founder, Sherrel Sampson on today's episode. She exudes confidence, passion and ambition -- perfect for National #LoveYourRedHairDay! We ask her the following questions:

1. We know you started Canviiy after experiencing an unbearable itchy scalp that would not go away. Can you share more about this? What's Canviiy’s main mission?

2. How did you come up with the line?

3. We were so excited to have your two products (Foam Treatment and Itch Calming Serum) included in our most recent October monthly + Fall Deluxe beauty boxes. How are these two products different from what else is on the market?

4. Let’s talk hair loss! This is a very popular topic within our redheaded community. A lot of women experience hair loss from conditions such as menopause, PCOS, and postpartum. One of your products, the Scalp-stimulating hair growth serum, helps to achieve visibly thicker, fuller, healthier hair and re-grow your gorgeous locks back. How does it effectively help with hair growth?

5. How does Canviiy support Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

6. Any special advice that you have specifically for our redheads?

Amber Hurdle is the guest on today’s episode. She is a redhead, professional Brand Strategist and Leadership Consultant. Her story, just like the start of any company, did not start with ease. She was a teen mom and with a lot of drive and organization, began successfully helping companies prosper. She’s author of “The Bombshell Business Woman” and host of “The Bombshell Business” podcast. Adrienne and Stephanie also share tips of their How to be a Redhead business journey, and one particular story that could have ended their business — but they refused to let it happen.

26 Oct 2018Ep 6: How To Raise Confident Redhead Children00:46:26

Episode 6 is all about redhead confidence when you’re raising redhead kids. Adrienne and Stephanie chose a guest who gave them confidence: their mom!

Her name is Jan Vendetti. She is a natural blonde from California. The girls were raised in New England in a predominately Italian neighborhood. Jan really helped Adrienne and Stephanie embrace who we were.

Adrienne and Stephanie were inspired to start HowtobeaRedhead.com because their mom truly helped them learn HOW to be a redhead (wink, wink).

02 Nov 2018Ep 7: Redhead Men and Redheads 'By Choice'00:29:45

On this week’s episode of the How to be a Redhead podcast, we’re talking all about redhead men and redheads ‘by choice’. Popular questions amongst How to be a Redhead followers are:

1. “I am a natural redhead man. Any tips for me?”

2. “I am a redhead ‘by choice’. I wasn’t born a redhead, but I know it’s the right color for me. What products are best for my hair? Any other tips for me?”

So, we wanted to dedicate an entire episode about these two topics.

We brought in two “experts” in these fields: siblings, Lydia and Josh Hodges who grew up in a redhead family. Josh is a natural redhead and Lydia has dyed her hair red for over 5 years and feels most confident being a redhead ‘by choice’.

Luckily, Josh is Adrienne’s husband and Lydia is her sister-in-law.

Lydia dishes on her favorite red hair dye, L’Oreal Paris Superior Preference, 6R Light Auburn (Warmer). She only leaves it on for 30 minutes and dyes it every 3 weeks. She also talks about how she gained so much confidence because of her red hair.

Josh talks about growing up as a natural redhead and vivid memories from his childhood; including redhead bullying and how he made it stop.

And, Josh also talks about how he isn’t afraid to use beauty products. One of his favorite items is PCA Skin’s Sensitive Skin Retinol and lots of sunscreen.

09 Nov 2018Ep 8: Green Beauty with Guest Katey Denno00:58:10

On this week’s episode of the How to be a Redhead podcast, we’re talking all about green beauty.

When How to be a Redhead launched in 2011, we focused on discussions about ‘Redhead Friendly’ approved products; 99.9% of the time green beauty items are ‘Redhead Friendly’ because they’re clean, free of heavy chemicals and as natural as can be.

That’s why we always recommend green beauty for redheads, and why Katey Denno is our guest in this week’s episode. Not only is she a redhead, but she is known as the go-to green beauty celebrity artist. Her passion for makeup was awakened during her 10+ year career in social work in DC and The Bronx, by her male-to-female transgender clients. While focusing on the external, she was able to help them feel good within, which she still believes, is the root of looking great. Denno’s redhead celebrity roster include Connie Britton, Isla Fisher, the queen of redheads herself: Julianne Moore, and more!

31 May 2019S2, Ep5: Nail Tips for Redheads with Guest, Maria Salandra

Maria Salandra is a natural redhead, is known in the celebrity circuit as *the* nail artist and since 2013 has been Rihanna’s personal nail artist. Maria's success story is incredibly unique. She wanted a career in music and only started to do nails as a side hustle. But eventually, one of her two career paths started to take off faster than the other.

With help from a few friends in the film industry, she landed her first Hollywood film: "Mixed Nuts", starring Steven Martin, Adam Sandler, and Rita Wilson. And then, her big break came along. The Italian nail artist found herself on set for the iconic series "The Sopranos", where she was in charge of the nails for all the principles. These Hollywood jobs led to some incredible redhead clientele like Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts (Julia will always be a redhead in our eyes because of her iconic role in “Pretty Woman”!).

Maria has done the nails of the Kardashian-Jenner clan and other celebs like Rachel McAdams, Christina Aguilera, and Jennifer Garner. Salandra never knows what type of project will come her way. It could be making nail designs for 50 models in one of Rihanna's fashion shows or flying to London for a last-minute event. We’re so happy she had time to talk with us about all-stuff redhead and of course, NAILS!

We take this time to look back and discuss important questions that truly feels like (redhead) beauty therapy:

1. Did you always have a passion for hair?

2. Stephanie hated her red hair in high school and you dyed her hair blonde regularly (to cover her red hair!) from about 2002-2008. Did this assist with you loving to color hair? Read more about Stephanie's story here: https://howtobearedhead.com/redhead-confidence-bullying-11-things-adrienne-stephanie-wish-they-knew-when-they-were-younger/

3. We have been there to see you grow and all of the different steps you have made to get to where you are now. You are a yoga instructor and put yourself through cosmetology school. How did you get to your position at L’Oreal as the Director of Digital Education?

4. Many redheads write in and they’re struggling with confidence. You helped us when we were finding confidence and discovering 'How to be a Redhead' -- from the instant tanner stages to Adrienne's black streak in her hair, to the obsession with mascara. Do you finally feel confident in your career and yourself?

5. We know you are a Human Design reader and you love how it has allowed you to be “you” -- being yourself is what confidence is all about. Talk to us a bit about it.

6. Your podcast, the Beauty Therapy Podcast! How did it come about?

7. Since you’ve been with us on the How to be a Redhead train since the very beginning, you really have an inner redhead! P.S. everyone, her grandma, Amy, is a beautiful redhead. What confidence tips do you have for redheads listening in?

19 Jul 2019S2, Ep12: Laser Hair Removal 101 for Redheads with Guest, Dr. Jay Kulkin

For years, beauty and laser specialists have said: “Redheads can’t get laser hair removal because the laser technology can’t pick up blonde/light hair follicles.” Is this true?

Founder & Medical Director of WIFH in Atlanta, Dr. Jay Kulkin, MD answers the question. He is a nationally recognized cosmetic laser specialist with more than thirty years of experience, and a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. While Dr. Kulkin is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it is his initial laser training in the late 1980’s that lead to his expertise in cosmetic lasers. As one of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Kulkin has led laser workshops to teach his techniques across the United States and Canada, and frequently serves as an expert on the subject.

Dr. Kulkin answers:

1. CAN redheads get laser hair removal?

2. If so, what type of laser hair removal would you recommend for a redhead?

3. We read, “The most common complication from laser hair removal is hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is the temporary darkening of the skin. This can occur in light-skinned patients who have had extended sun exposure resulting in the tanning of the skin.” Can you explain this further?

4. They said redheads experience more pain than most. Is laser painful?

26 Jul 2019S2, Ep13: Do Redheads Experience More Pain? Featuring Guest, Dr. Daniel Sessler

Redheads have always said they need more anesthesia and experience more pain than blondes/brunettes. But is it an urban legend? No! "Redheads do experience more pain," says Dr. Daniel Sessler. He's a world-renowned researcher and anesthesiologist. He was quoted in the 2009 New York Times article, "Pain of Being a Redhead". He extensively studied redheads and concluded redheads DO experience more pain than most and DO need more anesthesia!

This is a must-listen because of the important medical knowledge for all natural redheads!

Dr. Sessler attended medical school at Columbia University, and subsequently completed pediatric and anesthesia residencies at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is chair and founder of the Department of Outcomes Research at Cleveland Clinic. Outcomes Research currently coordinates more than a hundred studies, including a dozen large, multi-center outcome trials. His papers have been cited more than 25,000 times.

Dr. Sessler is on-air to answer the following questions:

1. You began studying a redhead’s sensitivity to pain after hearing chatter from colleagues. Urban legends say redheads have trouble with needing more anesthesia and are more sensitive to pain, specifically at the dentist. Can you share with our audience about your initial interest in the topic?

2. Your interest in a redhead’s sensitivity to pain led to two studies. What did these studies show? What were your findings? Were you surprised by the outcome?

3. So...Redheads really do require more anesthesia! Wow! How much more? Does it depend on the procedure?

4. Did you hear from a lot of redheads once your findings were released to the public?

5. Can you confirm, from your studies, that redheads needing more anesthesia and experiencing more pain is NOT an urban legend -- it is real?

16 Aug 2019S2, Ep16: Super Interesting History of Red Hair with Guest, Jacky Colliss Harvey

The truth is: redheads are super cool, but we already knew that right?! To help understand just how cool we are, you should learn a little more about the history of red hair. That's why we're so excited to talk with Jacky Colliss Harvey.

Jacky is the author of "Red: A History of the Redhead" and "My Life As A Redhead: A Journal". She studied English at Cambridge University and art history at the Courtauld Institute. She works in museum publishing and is a commentator and reviewer who speaks on the arts and their relation to popular culture. Her red hair has also found her an alternative career as a life model and a film extra playing everything from a society lady in Atonement to a Parisian whore in Bel-Ami. She splits her time between New York and London.

We answers the following super interesting questions:

1. "Red: A History of the Redhead" tells the history of red hair throughout the ages. It traces back 50,000 years and dives into science, religion, feminism and sexuality, literature, and art. The book begins with how the redhead gene made its way out of Africa with the early human diaspora, to its emergence under Northern skies. Fascinating! Tell us a bit more about the book & the fascinating things about redheads!

2. What was the biggest thing you learned about redheads while writing this book? Anything that surprised you?

3. The book dives into contemporary culture when it comes to “gingerism” and the movement against bullying. Do you think we’re moving in the right direction when it comes to anti-bullying against redheads?

4. Do you think redheads are portrayed positively in culture? Is there a difference between redhead men and redhead women being portrayed? If so, why do you think this happens?

5. In the book, you call your red hair, “The single most significant characteristic of your life.” Have you always identified with being a redhead?

23 Aug 2019S2, Ep17: Microblading 101 for Redheads with Guest, Katie Ellis

Microblading inserts semi-permanent pigment into the upper layers of skin to create the desired fullness and shape of the eyebrows. The effects last up to 12 months after which the pigment fades leaving the skin and your natural brows exactly as they were.

The technique is very on-trend right now. But microblading can be difficult for redheads because redheads typically have lighter and coarser brows, and sometimes a semi-permanent color can be way too harsh. BUT, microblading can be done! A redhead needs to find the right professional who has worked on redheads before.

Thanks to social media, we came across today's guest, Katie Ellis, on Instagram. One of Ellis' red-haired clients broke down in tears after seeing her new microbladed redhead brows.

Ellis is from Fresno, California. She is a registered nurse turned beauty business entrepreneur. She realized after six long years in college and two years of nursing, her true passion is to help women feel beautiful through microblading. Giving her clients confidence through microblading makes her heart soar and leaves her fulfilled every day.

She answers the following questions:

1. Who is the best candidate for microblading?

2. Walk us through the process! Post, during and pre-microblading?

3. A redhead sits down to get their brows microbladed. How do you decide on the color of the brows? We’ve read that sometimes the color can change. Have you seen this?

4. Does it hurt? Should a redhead with sensitive skin be concerned about irritation?

5. How many times do they see you: When you get it done, do you have to go back once it heals? How long does it last? How often do you need to get it done?

30 Aug 2019S2, Ep18: Embracing Curly Red Hair with Co-Founder of NaturallyCurly.com, Michelle Breyer

We, Adrienne and Stephanie, have curly red hair and discovered that embracing our curls was a challenging journey -- a similar feeling when learning to love our unique hair color. Before we launched HowtobeaRedhead.com, we were fans (and still are!) of NaturallyCurly.com, a website for curly hair.

That's why we're excited to talk to co-founder of NaturallyCurly.com, Michelle Breyer. She helped create the leading community and resource for people with curly hair. Frustrated by the lack of information on curly hair and the limited products available in the marketplace, her and her business partner, Gretchen Heber, launched the site in 1998.

Michelle answers the following questions:

1. Let’s talk about your hair journey! What was it like growing up with curly hair?

2. What have you learned from your journey in building NaturallyCurly?

3. If you could give a redhead with curly hair ONE tip (and one tip only) for the perfect curls, what would it be?

4. What is your current hair regimen?

5. What is your top tip for eliminating frizz?

6. What hair products can you not live without?

7. What advice do you have for those redheads listening who have yet to embrace their curls, or maybe just getting started?

31 Jan 2020S3, Ep1: How I Faced Life’s Curveball Head On: Stephanie Shares Personal Story

Stephanie talks about an unexpected challenge that came her way and how she handled the situation. At age 30, she was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer & at the same time experienced a miscarriage. It took time, lots of yoga/meditation and family/friends to get her to her current place of gratitude and thanks.

Many of you were wondering when Season 3 of the H2BAR podcast was kicking off and this is why we decided to delay the season until now.

Stephanie speaks candidly about her experience and what it taught her about life and the future. If you wish to e-mail her, as she suggests at the end of the episode, the best email is: info@HowtobeaRedhead.com.

Stephanie wrote a post titled "Forever Thankful: How I Faced Life’s Curveball Head On". Once live on HowtobeaRedhead.com, we will link here: https://howtobearedhead.com/papillary-thyroid-cancer-redhead-health-journey/

07 Feb 2020S3, Ep2: Interview with Redhead Bachelor Contestant, Elyse Dehlbom

Elyse Dehlbom was a fan favorite on the 23rd season of ABC’s "The Bachelor". Refinery 29 wrote, “But one contestant [speaking of Elyse] on Colton Underwood's season stood out simply because of her hair color. Sigh. Redheads are (oddly) rare on the show.”

She grew up outside of Anchorage in Alaska, where she spent her childhood outdoors. She found a warmer climate when she relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona - where she now works as a makeup artist. Elyse also owns GlamourGasp.com which gives one-on-one makeup lessons online.

Redhead makeup tips, conversations about "The Bachelor" and how it was growing up as a redhead in Alaska... this is a super fun episode!

14 Feb 2020S3, Ep3: Importance of Vitamin D for Redheads with Guest, Dr. Soma Mandal

Redheads are said to make their own Vitamin D and because of this are said to need less Vitamin D than blondes/brunettes. Can we say hashtag #Superpower?

Is this true and what should we know about Vitamin D and its connection with redheads?

Studies have suggested that redheads are most efficient at synthesizing D, which is crucial for bone health and is thought to protect against depression. Scottish experts have speculated that this ability gives redheads a genetic advantage in gloomy climates because they can churn out more D in low-light conditions than people with darker skin or hair. This is all thanks to the MC1R gene mutation.

The reason we talk about this today is because of a recent routine checkup Adrienne had. She gave blood for her annual checkup and found out she was “dangerously low” on Vitamin D. Reference Range was <36.00 and she was an 18. She’s now on prescribed medicated Vitamin D levels and feels much better -- after experiencing exhaustion and weakness for the past 2-3 months. She wondered why, being a natural redhead, she didn't make enough Vitamin D like the studies suggest.

We talk with guest, Dr. Soma Mandal, a board certified internist. She specializes in women’s health and is widely regarded as one of America’s top physicians in midlife women’s health. She earned her MD at New York University School of Medicine, and a prestigious research fellowship at Oxford University in England. Fusing traditional Western medicine with her Eastern roots, Dr. Mandal’s approach combines the best of both worlds.

We ask her:

1. Why is Vitamin D so important for everyone?

2. Is there really a connection with Vitamin D and redheads? Does the MC1R gene affect Vitamin D levels? Or is it a myth?

3. Since you’re an expert in women’s health, what are your top general health tips for women? Multi-vitamins? Routine blood work and physicals?

4. We know diet can affect Vitamin D levels, and other Vitamins/levels in the body. There is so much data in the world! What diet do you recommend for women?

5. Can you prevent Vitamin D deficiency? Are genes a factor in this?

21 Feb 2020S3, Ep4: Part 1, What Is the HydraFacial Treatment & Is It 'Redhead Friendly'?

The backbone of HowtobeaRedhead.com is our 'Redhead Friendly' approval process. It's what inspired the launch of the H2BAR Box, the "How to be a Redhead" book and the redhead beauty events. All products + services recommended by us has been meticulously tested by a redhead + if it passes all of the testing, it is deemed 'Redhead Friendly Approved'.

We have heard so much about the HydraFacial Treatment. It's defined as a medical-grade hydradermabrasion device that carries out a patented three-part regimen — cleansing, exfoliating, and then infusing skin with intensive serums. It is known to be a gentler facial + vacuums out pores while simultaneously pushing in potent actives, which moisturize, brighten, plump, and protect. The machine's handpiece holds patented spiralized treatment tips equipped with "vortex technology" — the whirling force that both giveth and taketh away.

Is the HydraFacial Treatment 'Redhead Friendly'? Before we test it ourselves, we want our listeners to know the process we take to approve products. We thoroughly research + always contact companies with questions.

We talk with Clara Hughes, a licensed esthetician and Training and Education Manager at The HydraFacial Company.

Clara has been with The HydraFacial company for over seven years and continues to lead promotional events, assist in sales and marketing for both national and international trade shows, promotional media segments and training programs.

Here are some of the questions we ask her:

1. We read that the HydraFacial is one of the most popular in-office facial treatments right now. It is so popular that one is performed every 15 seconds around the world. What exactly is the HydraFacial and how is it different from an actual facial?

2. Redheads are known to have sensitive skin and suffer from redness and rosacea. Who is a good candidate for a HydraFacial?

3. How long does the procedure take? Any side effects?

4. Can you go in the sun after? Do you recommend sunscreen after the treatment?

5. How often should you get a HydraFacial?

6. HydraFacial’s newest scalp procedure, Keravive, is designed to cleanse, stimulate, nourish, and hydrate the scalp for fuller and healthier-looking hair. Redheads really suffer from itchy scalps. Can you walk us through this technique? It sounds so interesting!

We also talk in detail about Julianne Moore's skin routine. See all products + details: https://howtobearedhead.com/julianne-moores-secrets-for-ageless-redhead-skin/

28 Feb 2020S3, Ep5: What Redheads Need To Know About Gua Sha with Guest, Sandra Lanshin Chiu, LAc

Gua sha is a natural therapy that involves scraping your skin with a massage tool to improve your circulation. This ancient Chinese healing technique may offer a unique approach to better health, addressing issues like chronic pain*.  In gua sha, a technician scrapes your skin with short or long strokes to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue, which increases blood flow. They make these strokes with a smooth-edged instrument known as a gua massage tool. The technician applies massage oil to your skin, and then uses the tool to repeatedly scrape your skin.

With redheads being so sensitive, is gua sha a recommended practice?

We couldn't think of a better guest than Sandra Lanshin Chiu, LAc. We were first introduced to her via her viral YouTube video "Learn Facial Gua Sha from a Chinese Medical Skincare Professional" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc12OTFzua0). It has been viewed over 1.5 million times! We're so excited to welcome her to the How to be a Redhead podcast.

Sandra is an acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist and founder of Treatment by Lanshin. In practice for over a decade, she focuses on treating skin disorders and rejuvenating skin using the unique approach of Chinese medicine, which she believes will transform the future of skincare. Specially trained in herbal dermatology, she uses Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture to resolve common skin problems like acne, rosacea, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis. In recent years her work with skin and facial rejuvenation has also received increasing interest and media attention.  Through her initial success in treating pain conditions, infertility, digestive disorders, etc., Sandra observed her work also had a powerful impact on restoring skin quality and youthfulness in her patients. Today she applies the successful techniques she has learned and developed into her signature style of anti-aging work.

We ask her the following questions:

1. We love your YouTube videos! After applying your gua sha techniques to our skin care routine, we saw a real difference in our redhead skin. What are its benefits?

2. Who is a good candidate for gua aha? Can this technique help those experiencing rosacea and redness?

3. Let's talk about the gua sha tool, specifically your gua sha tool on Lanshin.com. Is the texture of the tool on purpose? The shape?

4. When should we practice gua sha?

5. How do you prep your skin for gua aha? Do you recommend certain skincare products to complement gua sha?

6. What about acne prone skin? Can a redhead with acne use gua aha on their skin? Good for all skin types?

7. How is gua aha different than jade rolling?

8. What are some key parts to your daily wellness routine?

9. What is your #1 skin tip for redheads?

10. You have highly demanded classes that have expanded to the general public. When can we go?!

11. Can you have botox and do gua sha?

06 Mar 2020S3, Ep6: All About Couperose Skin with Guest/CEO of No B.S. Skincare, Diana Briceno

Those with natural red hair have thinner skin than people with darker hair. Redheads are prone to what doctors call “couperose skin.” Couperose skin is defined as visibly dilated capillaries; these capillaries are most likely to show up around the nose and cheek area and can look and feel similar to rosacea. Because a redhead’s skin is thinner, you might even feel like you bruise more too.  Characteristics of this skin type: 1. Capillaries can be seen on the cheeks and nose. 2. Red patches on the face, neck and décolleté. 3. Uneven and blotchy skin tone. 4. Sensitive skin prone to irritations. 5. Skin is dry and feels tight.

We’re excited to talk with No B.S. Skin Care CEO, Diana Briceno, because she can speak to the importance of caring for the largest organ on our bodies, especially for those who are more likely to be impacted, like redheads. She founded No B.S. for every type of skin tone as a "no b.s." solution, natural and cruelty-free -- it's revolutionizing skincare with clean formulas, real results, and radically honest beauty culture.

We ask her the following questions:

1. We feel like all redheads need "No B.S." in their skincare routine. Redheads suffer from so many breakouts and irritations. The topic for this podcast is all about couperose skin.  For those of us who have extremely sensitive skin, what should we know about caring for it?

2. In an industry full of miracle-in-a-bottle marketing, No B.S. Skin Care is revolutionizing skincare with clean formulas, real results, and a radically honest beauty culture. How did this come about? Did you see LOTS of B.S. in products and were sick of it?

3. On the LiveNoBS.com website, we saw that the FDA banned 11 toxic and harmful ingredients from skincare. And No B.S. banned 1,500. Wow! Can these toxic ingredients be causing those with couperose skin to have these common irritations? Tell us more about this.

4. Do products with no B.S. work? So many products like retinols or “miracle working” items are full of chemicals. We heard some scientists say that the chemical is what makes them work.  We also see No B.S. has a natural retinol. What do you say to those who say chemicals + all the B.S. make for good skin?

5. What is 1 product every person with sensitive skin needs?

23 Apr 2021S3, Ep9: Finally Have Brows® - Why It Was Created & We Talk About The Reaction After Release00:20:13

On February 5th, we launched Finally Have Brows®! Over the past few years, we have been working behind the scenes to develop an eyebrow gel for redheads. We had a hard task at hand. We wanted all redheads to be able to use the same shade, we needed it to be paraben-free/cruelty-free/vegan, made in the USA, sleek packaging, custom brush for coarse brow hair (a trait amongst most redheads).. and so much more. We talk about how we developed Finally Have Brows®, the reaction when it dropped on February 5, 2021 and the reaction of redheads everywhere after the release!

Shop + read the rave reviews: https://shop.howtobearedhead.com/products/finally-have-brows-tinted-redhead-eyebrow-gel

Exclusive in the podcast notes, we wanted to showcase some of our favorite reviews:

  • This eyebrow gel is AH-MAZING!!! I am in love with the natural effect and how very little product I need to use. Please don’t ever stop making it. I am a natural redhead with (used to be) darker brows, that have faded as I’ve aged. The tint of this brow gel is the only thing that’s ever looked even close to natural for me. And the order I placed today is for my niece who has the blonde-barely-there brows and it looks amazing on her too (bc of course we tried mine on her first!) Thank you so much for catering to the needs of a a desperately underserved group of peeps - all of us gingers! - Audie K.
  • I love this product so much that I bought a second one so I have a back up in case I can't get this again anytime soon. -Amy M.
  • I absolutely love it! I’ve never tried any brow products that was so easily matched to my red hair. I love it and I recommend it to any redhead or anyone who wants natural looking red hair eye brows.
01 May 2021S3, Ep10: Kicking Off Melanoma Awareness Month with Guest, Evelynn Moz from VERTRA Premium Suncare 00:51:12

Redheads are prone to melanoma more than any other hair color. Sunscreen knowledge is so essential and if you've listened to our podcast (or read HowtobeaRedhead.com for the last decade), you know we're passionate about skincare for redheads. The month of May is the beginning of Melanoma Awareness Month and we're kicking it off with a very special Saturday episode!

Our guest is Evelynn Moz from VERTRA Premium Suncare. She is the Product Line Manager and passionate about sunscreen.

It's scary because a recent study found that many of the American sunscreen products labeled as “broad spectrum” block UVB rays but don’t block UVA rays. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB. Vertra is committed to creating a premium sunscreen line that is infused with non-nano, mineral UVA/UVB blockers that meet the maximum 80-minute FDA water and sweat resistance ratings. They’re also paraben-free and great for redhead skin.

*Hint, Hint*: The May H2BAR Box ships today and VERTRA is one of the sunscreen brands inside! Subscribe: www.h2barbox.com

For over a decade now Vertra has provided the ocean’s best athletes with superior UV protection with a patented processes. Vertra is now considered the ultimate skincare for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

We talk with Evelynn about her work with Dior, Chanel, Estee Lauder, Kate Somerville and now VERTRA. As an athlete herself, she was a competitive soccer player in her teens and even played in two world cup tournaments in Europe, so she knows how bad sunburns can be.

We discuss about the following:

1. Let’s talk about VERTRA! Tell us a bit about the brand? Why was it created?

2. Although the brand has roots in the professional surf industry, the products that Vertra makes can be used not only for any sport, but also for daily wear.  Vertra is so beneficial for young athletes, so that they are better protected and more knowledgeable than the generations that came before us. We heard you were a competitive soccer player in your teens and even played in two world cup tournaments in Europe!

3. We’re so excited to have your Pearl White Sticks 50+ a part of our May H2BAR Box. It’s an amazing product. Why is this product so unique?

4. Why is reef-safe important?

5. Not a lot of consumers know the difference between all the ingredients in sunscreen. Why is Octinoxate & Oxybenzone harmful?

6. We know the VERTRA products are 80 minute water-resistant. What does that exactly mean?

7. What are some tips for after-sun care?

07 May 2021S3, Ep11: Redhead Makeup with Natalie Cosco, Jane Levy's Makeup Artist 00:33:27

We're big fans of NBC's "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist". The main character/redhead is Zoey Clarke (played by actress Jane Levy). The show is centered around the ability Zoey has to hear people's thoughts in song. Her redhead character is stubborn, determined, and loving. She's also gorgeous and her makeup is always on-point!

On and off stage, Natalie Cosco is the woman behind Jane Levy's redhead makeup looks. Natalie is an accomplished makeup artist in both film, print and TV. Her career spans 30 years of achievements including iconic productions as: "Smallville", "Fear the Walking Dead" - Season 1, "The Mountain Between Us", "The Edge of Seventeen", "30 Days of Night (Dark Days)", "The Man in The High Castle" and "The Art of Racing in The Rain."

We are so excited to ask Natalie the following questions and for you to hear her answers/tricks/techniques:

1. Let’s talk about redhead makeup! Besides your current work on "Zoeys Extraordinary Playlist", we know you worked on so many films and TV shows throughout your career. What do you love about working on a redhead? Are there any special products, shades etc. that you use when working on a redhead?

2. We LOVED the look you did on Jane Levy at the Golden Globes this year. For those who didn’t see it (and we’ll post it on HowtobeaRedhead.com), Jane Levy was wearing a navy blue dress. She had on a colorful lip, a smokey eye and great brows. We’ll break down those choices in a minute. But, the difference with this look is that the 2021 Golden Globes was virtual! Did the virtual nature of the show play a part in Jane’s makeup look? Should you do your makeup differently when on Zoom? If so, how?

3. Her smokey cat eye was gorgeous! What products do you recommend for achieving this look?

4. How about her lip color? We love a pink shade for the spring and summer months ahead and know a lot of redheads may be afraid to rock a bold lip with their red hair already making a statement.

5. As a makeup artist, what is your go-to makeup product?

6. What is your favorite concealer and how should you prep your under eye area before applying this product? And, how do you deal with creases in the concealer?

14 May 2021S3, Ep12: Why Redheads Feel Less Pain with Guest Dr. David E. Fisher MD, PhD.00:39:08

There is so much misinformation on the web! Do redheads feel more pain or less pain? The answer is: redheads feel less pain and the reason why is fascinating. The brilliant Dr. David E. Fisher MD, PhD. is our special guest for this episode.

Dr. Fisher is an internationally known researcher, clinician and academic, who is Chief of the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). He also serves as Director of the MGH Cutaneous (Q-taneous) Biology Research Center and Director of the Melanoma Center at MGH. A Professor of Dermatology and of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Fisher came to the MGH from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where he previously Directed the Melanoma Program.

Dr. Fisher's research has focused on understanding the molecular and genetic events which underlie formation of melanoma as well as skin pigmentation. As a clinician, he has worked to translate these understandings into advances in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human diseases related to the skin and associated disorders. A graduate of Swarthmore College with a degree in Biology and Chemistry, Dr. Fisher is also an accomplished concert cellist and received a degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He received his PhD under Nobel Laureate Gunter Blobel at Rockefeller University and his Medical Degree at Cornell University Medical College under Dr. Henry Kunkel.

Dr. Fisher's specialty training in Medicine, Pediatrics, and Oncology were carried out at Harvard Medical School. He recently served for three years as President of the Society for Melanoma Research, the largest international society dedicated to the study of melanoma.

New research led by investigators Dr. Fisher at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) provides insights on why people with red hair exhibit altered sensitivity to certain kinds of pain.

He will answer the following questions:

1. There has been confusion amongst social media. We want to get to the bottom of it. In very simple terms, can you break down what you do, what you focus on and the new research that you came out with surrounding the MC1R gene? We want to know if redheads feel more or less pain!

2. Redhead mice have the MC1R gene -- is that true?

3. What should redheads in general take away from this study? Will pain management be different or should be different?

4. How about the MC1R gene in conjunction with melanoma?

Do you have frizzy red hair? Does your red hair sometimes fade in the summer sun? Did you receive the Oribe Power Drops Color Preservation Booster in your Winter Deluxe H2BAR Box and want tips on how to use it? If you said "yes" to any of these questions, this podcast episode is for you!

Today's guest is Adam Livermore. He is Oribe’s Global Educator and resides in NYC. He works at Muze Salon and also works freelance on editorial, celebrities, fashion etc. At Oribe, he teaches hairstylists cutting, styling, and product knowledge, and works closely with new product development on testing and developing new products. Celeb clients: Cher, Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meg Ryan, Naomi Campbell. He is also a hybrid model redhead myself. He has a red beard and blond-ish hair. He said, “Red hair is special, I love it.”

Here are some of the questions we ask him:

1. We have to ask! Did you grow up with red hair? You have a red beard!

2. As Oribe’s Global Educator, we know you must love so many Oribe products. We actually featured Oribe’s Gold Lust Power Drops Damage Hair Repair Booster in our Winter Deluxe H2BAR Box (www.h2barbox.com). Who is a good candidate for this product? What are the best tips for use?

3. Let’s talk roots! We see Oribe has an Airbrush Root Touch-Up Spray for Red. Do you recommend this product for natural redheads who now dye their hair to make it more vibrant AND redheads-by-choice who dye it?

4. Let’s talk about fading red hair amongst natural redheads. Our audience asks about this more than anything else. What are your top tips to keep red hair vibrant?

5. Frizz! What is your top tip for eliminating frizz this summer?

6. How about curls? Is there a certain technique you recommend when caring for your red curls?

11 Jun 2021S3, Ep14: Popular Sunscreens Contaminated with Carcinogen! What To Know with Guest, Dr. Erum Ilyas00:33:56

This is an urgent podcast episode! Last week, an independent lab, Valisure Labs, announced it discovered potentially harmful levels of benzene, a known carcinogen, in several popular sunscreen products. Now, Valisure Labs is calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recall the affected batches. In a report released May 24, they analyzed 294 batches of sunscreen and after-sun products from 69 brands. Benzene was detected in 78 (over a quarter) of those batches—and 14 of them contained more than the FDA’s limit of 2 parts per million (ppm). Neutrogena, Sun Bum, CVS Health, and Fruit of the Earth were among the brands with the highest levels of the carcinogen, per the lab’s results.

WHAT DO WE DO NOW?

Dr. Erum Ilyas is here to answer any/all questions for redheads + everyone else listening! Her focus is on adult and pediatric medical dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, and skin cancer prevention and treatment. She has practiced dermatology in the Philadelphia/Boston areas for over 15 years and has served as Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Drexel University College of Medicine and the System Chief for Dermatology of the Main Line Health Hospital Systems. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, Fellow of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, member of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, Pennsylvania Academy of Dermatology, and Philadelphia Dermatological Society. Dr. Ilyas has served with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgeons as a State Advocacy Leader. She has visited Capitol Hill with the AAD to advocate for restrictions on tanning bed usage for pediatric patients, increased research funding for rare diseases and increased access to pharmaceuticals at affordable prices for patients. She recently worked with local state leaders to successfully push for legislation permitting students in the state of Pennsylvania to apply sunscreen in school without a doctor’s note.

Dr. Ilyas is the founder of AmberNoon, a contemporary UPF clothing line that protects skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. She designs a diffusion line for QVC, AmberNoon II by Dr Erum Ilyas, for which she also serves as the spokesperson. Dr. Ilyas lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and three teenage children.

She answers the following important questions:

  1. Valisure, a lab and online pharmacy that regularly tests consumer products, explains it analyzed 294 batches of sunscreen and after-sun products from 69 brands. Benzene was detected in 78 (over a quarter) of those batches—and 14 of them contained more than the FDA’s limit of 2 parts per million (ppm). What does the report mean exactly? Should we be worried?

  2. As a skincare professional yourself who has really dedicated her life to sun protection, did this news surprise you?

  3. What are your top 1 or 2 recommended sunscreens?

  4. So many people do not want to talk about skin cancer. But, it’s real and it’s serious. Redheads are said to have melanoma more than any hair color because of the MC1R gene -- even without exposure to the sun. What do you know about these facts?

  5. So many of us are now worried about sunscreen being harmful too. But, wearing sunscreen is always essential. What tips do you have for redheads who are now scared to wear sunscreen?

  6. We love UPF clothing! Can you tell us about your contemporary clothing line that protects skin from harmful rays, AmberNoon?

29 Oct 2021S4, Ep 1: Skin Minimalism for Redheads with Orora Skin Science's Co-founder, Leslie Iddison 00:33:20

Happy Halloween weekend and welcome to Season 4 of the How to be a Redhead podcast! While many are piling on makeup to enhance their costumes, we're talking about skin minimalism on the first episode of the season. Skin minimalism is the practice of using 1-3 products (only) for your skin routine.

Most redheads have very sensitive skin and it can be overwhelming to pick the essential items for our skin type. We're talking with Leslie Iddison, the co-founder of Orora Skin Science. Leslie is a beauty aficionado with nearly two decades of experience in luxury beauty brands and a deep source of industry knowledge. Naturally, her lifelong passion for skincare brought her next project to light -- co-founding Orora Skin Science. As a beauty expert, Leslie identified an opportunity to democratize innovative skincare, making the cutting-edge science of beauty accessible.

If you're a Deluxe H2BAR Box subscriber, you're enjoying the Orora Skin Science Bioactive Collagen Serum ($84 value). Use code: BOO to get 20% off site-wide. Ends 11/1/2021 at 11:59PM ET.

We talk about how the Bioactive Collagen Serum has transformed our redhead skin, and Adrienne discusses how it has helped her acne considerably.

We ask Leslie the following questions:

1.Let’s talk about the “skin minimalism” trend! Why are consumers leaning towards this more?

2.As a skincare expert + co-founder of the Orora skincare founder, how can you tell if you’re using too many products?

3.It’s so important to know exactly what we are putting on our skin, especially those redheads who have extremely sensitive skin. Without getting too science-y (ha!), can you talk about a few important ingredients every redhead should have in their skincare routine?

4.At the same time, can you talk more about Orora too? There is so much confusion out there on how to properly apply your skin products. What is the correct order?

5.What are your top tips for changing up your skincare routine this fall/winter? Is this important and how can it be done effectively at home?

12 Jan 2022BONUS: Happy Kiss a Ginger Day 00:04:30

It's Kiss a Ginger Day! While the holiday may appear silly on the surface, it actually has a greater significance beyond just locking lips. International Kiss a Ginger Day was invented by a Facebook group in 2009 in order to combat another “holiday” previously created for harassing redheads, Kick a Ginger Day.

Inspired by an episode of South Park released in 2005, Kick a Ginger Day was created as a Facebook group by a 14-year-old boy from Vancouver in 2008. The holiday was no joke—in its first year, numerous redheads in schools were kicked and punched by their classmates, and the perpetrators proudly declared their acts on the group page.

We love to celebrate the positivity of Kiss a Ginger Day, so join us in celebrations!

Yesterday, How to be a Redhead celebrated 11 years since its launch on 1.11.11! Our mega sitewide 25% off sale ends at midnight. Use code: H2BARBDAY at checkout: https://shop.howtobearedhead.com

28 Jan 2022S4, Ep 2: What is CBD Skincare and Why Should Redheads Use It? With Guest, Sammie Smith, Chief Product Officer at No, Thank You ™ Skincare00:35:18

We're talking about CBD skincare and why redheads should use it! To quickly break down the difference between CBD, hemp seed oil, marijuana.

CBD is short for cannabidiol and known to have medicinal properties. It is legal and is not marijuana and does not make you high. It is extracted from the entire hemp plant.

Hemp oil is only extracted from hemp seeds. It does not make you high and medicinal properties are not as strong as CBD. It is legal.

Marijuana is the plant with a high potency of THC and people smoke or consume it to feel "high". It is illegal in many states.

Our guest is Sammie Smith, natural redhead + Chief Product Officer at No, Thank You ™ CBD Skincare (https://nty.co). She got into skincare when she was 18-years-old while modeling in New York and struggling with acne. Being such a science nerd, she got into researching what was happening to her skin and why. That is pretty much where her love affair with skincare started. A few years later when she moved to Los Angeles, she started studying nutrition in school. This led Sammie to a huge lifestyle shift where she started looking at what was in her products and switched everything to all natural and clean products. This was before the clean beauty movement and there were not many high-quality clean products on the market. So, she decided to start making products herself. A friend asked Sammie to join his CBD start-up company and run the skin care division. This is how she got connected with No, Thank You!

Being able to create products that have such an impact on someone’s self confidence, and makes them feel good about themselves is really what drives her and makes her feel so lucky to do what she does.

Here are a few questions we will ask her on the podcast:

1. For those listening who are new to CBD, what is it? What are its benefits?

2. Why should someone make a switch to CBD?

3.We featured No Thank You’s Face Oil in our most recent Winter Deluxe H2BAR Box (https://shop.howtobearedhead.com/collections/beauty/products/winter-deluxe-h2bar-box-extra-boxes-remaining-in-warehouse). We love that it’s for those with sensitive skin and combats many characteristics redheads experience such as redness, pigmentation and dark spots. Tell us more about why this brand and product is so unique!

4.How do you choose the right CBD products for your skin type?

5. What’s your absolute favorite skincare product?

6.Let's talk redhead makeup products! What is your favorite?

11 Feb 2022S4, Ep 4: FRECKLES! With Guest + Freckled Aesthetician, Haley Torres 00:40:09

We're here to talk about one of our favorite topics: FRECKLES! We'll go in-depth about how to take care of freckles, skin routine, acne, redhead skin and more.

Our guest is natural redhead, Haley Smith-Torres. She is known as "The Freckled Aesthetician" on social media. Haley is the owner and solo esthetician behind The Freckled Skin Studio in Forney, TX (outside Dallas). Haley's skin background allows her to specialize in advanced skincare treatments. Her salon specializes in customized facial treatments, face reality acne bootcamp, nano channeling and advanced peel treatments. If you heard “acne bootcamp” and want to know more, we will go into detail with her on today’s podcast. They’re advanced chemical peels and she is able to effortlessly guide her clients on their journey to their best skin because she herself also knows the debilitating tolls acne and other skin concerns can have on one’s mental health. Haley is also an In-House Aesthetician for Dermascope Magazine where she provides insight on continuing education and advises on all things skin. Outside of the Esthetic world she's also a mother to 3 beautiful boys.

Some of the questions we will ask her:

1.Whenever we interview a redhead, no matter their expertise, we always ask: how was it growing up with red hair? Did you love it / hate it? Do you love it now?

2.Bring us on YOUR redhead skin journey. We know you mentioned being able to relate to your clients who have/had acne and the effect it can take on their mental health.

3.What was your redhead skin like growing up?

4.Let’s talk about acne a bit more – when a client comes in who has acne, what do you do for them? Is every client's situation different?

5.Let’s talk freckles! Your salon’s brand is based on the fact that you’re a “freckled aesthetician”. How is freckled skin different? What skin tips do you give clients with freckled skin?

6.Walk us through it – you have a redhead or something with really sensitive skin come to you for skin help. They have acne, skin that irritates easily. What do you do? What treatments? What skin routine is recommended?

7.Do you truly feel like redhead skin is different from others?

8.What does your skin routine look like?

9.What’s your favorite makeup

11 Mar 2022S4, Ep 5: How To Heal From Bullying + Trauma with Guest, Dr. Marianna Strongin00:36:14

This is one of the most powerful episodes we have ever recorded. We're talking about bullying + trauma, and how to get the tools to heal.

Dr. Marianna Strongin is a natural redhead and a licensed clinical psychologist in Manhattan. She’s the founder of Strong in Therapy (https://strongintherapy.com/). She is trained to treat mood and anxiety disorders and a variety of life transitional issues. Through exploration of feelings, behaviors, and life choices Dr. Strongin helps clients become stronger and more confident individuals.

She has an incredible story. She immigrated from Moldova to the USA when she was 8-years-old. Her first language is Russian and she did not speak English when she arrived. On top of being the only student who didn't speak English, she was also a redhead. “It was awful. I was called 'Big Red' 'Flame Crotch' 'Red' etc,” says Dr. Strongin. “Being called out for being a redhead significantly diminished my self-esteem growing up.”

She says her mom worked really hard to equalize it by emphasizing how important being different was. Now she values her differences and her red hair is the thing she loves most about myself. She uses her background and experience of feeling "different" to further understand and feel for her patients.

We’re excited for Dr. Strongin to give How to be a Redhead’s listeners tools to value their differences, boost their confidence, and love their red hair, too.

Today is also the launch day for Finally Have Brows Volumizing redhead eyebrow gel! 25 Mar 2022S4, Ep 6: Vibrant Red Hair + Taylor Tomasi Hill! With Guest & Hair Color Virtuoso, Gion Vincent 00:35:50

Let's take you back to 2011. We, Adrienne + Stephanie, moved to New York City after launching HowtobeaRedhead.com. We were working to start a social/website presence around loving your red hair, something that had never been done before. Although other New York natural redheads were an inspiration to us: Julianne Moore, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Jessica Chastain -- there was one who stood out amongst the rest. Her name is Taylor Tomasi Hill. Yes, yes, we know. She is not a natural redhead, but her street fashion was EVERYTHING to us. It is still is.

Taylor's style oozes confidence. Her hair is always styled effortlessly. And her red hair is vibrant and loud. See some of her favorite looks by clicking here.

Our dream was to accidentally run into her strutting down New York City streets in a leather skirt, the perfect heal, a floral top, and wavy red hair. Or maybe even platform shoes, loud-printed pants, and a leather jacket. Or, maybe even a leopard scarf, a great blouse and matching leopard sunglasses. TWO REDHEAD GIRLS CAN DREAM, RIGHT?!

The dream never happened because we were never at the right place at the right time. But, who knows what the future holds. *Fingers are always crossed*

So, you can imagine our excitement when Taylor's hair colorist, Gion Vincent started tagging @HowtobeaRedhead on Instagram.

It's our absolute pleasure to have Gion Vincent on today's podcast. He's a true hair color virtuoso known for his work from the most natural blondes to dramatic redheads. He's known for his versatility in creating high fashion hair color. Gion originally trained under the very watchful eye of Beth Minardi. He has perfected his skills and you can visit him at the Sam Brocato Salon in New York City. Taylor Tomasi Hill revealed Gion was the architect of her signature copper locks in the Fashion week issue of Goop magazine and it provided Gion with a ton of buzz. He is sophisticated and has a nuanced approach to creating rich, stunning hair color.

Plus, Gion's mother is a natural-born redhead, so he really understands redheads.

08 Apr 2022S4, Ep 7: Do Redheads Need More Anesthesia? Featuring Guest & Anesthesiologist, David Sherer, MD00:25:19

You may have heard natural redheads need more anesthesia. Is this true? Is it false? Is it case-by-case? We believe knowledge is power and we wanted to dedicate an entire episode about this topic with an actual anesthesiologist.

We're excited to welcome David Sherer, MD to today's podcast. He's an American anesthesiologist, health/medicine expert, and the author of five books. He is a graduate of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital anesthesia residency program. He is President and Founder of Consolidated Medicine, a medical and healthcare consulting group, and has written on the legal aspects of medicine, the economics of healthcare, and the shortcomings inherent in Western medicine. His website is etherthriller.com. In 2021, his non-fiction book What Your Doctor Won't Tell You and his novel Into the Ether were nominated for the National Book Award.

He will answer the following questions:

1.They say natural redheads need more anesthesia. Is this true?

2. We have read that redheads need about 20% more anesthesia. Is that percentage accurate or does it change person by person?

3. When we think of anesthesia, we think of surgery and being put under for hours at a time. What about local topical anesthetics, such as novocaine. Do redheads need more of that too?

4. Do anesthesiologists get trained about this in medical school? And is this something to talk to your doctor/surgeon about because it’s fairly new knowledge?

5. We did a whole other podcast episode about why redheads feel less pain, and how our brains process pain differently. They say redheads need to be aware that they are likely more sensitive to pain-killing medication, such as opioids. Are you able to speak about if natural redheads need lower doses of opioids?

6. Are there any other redhead facts you know about in the medical world?

18 Apr 2022S4, Ep 8: Reducing The Carbon Footprint One Redhead At A Time With Guest + Founder of Petal, Jason Domangue00:34:21

Sustainability is at forefront of most brands. It's a big part of our everyday (personal) lives and we're working very hard to ensure How to be a Redhead walks down the sustainability track too. To kick off Earth Week (April 22nd) and this important conversation, we're talking with the founder of Petal, Jason Domangue. Petal's mission is to give accessibility to sustainability right at home. They created a biodegradable, all-natural foaming hand soap made with aluminum reusable packaging that makes cleaning really cool.

All Spring Deluxe + April H2BAR Box subscribers received a full-size Petal aluminum hand soap pump and soap pods. Subscribe Now!

We're asking him questions like:

  1. Why did you start Petal?
  2. What does it mean to be sustainable?
  3. What is actually recyclable?
  4. Do you feel like the world is headed in the right direction? We read on Petal's website: “Personal care products contribute more than 500 million plastic bottles to landfills each year, and are among the product categories with the highest daily usage yet lowest recycling rates. Less than 8% of these plastic bottles and packages are recycled and 28,000 tons of plastics are added to the ocean daily.”
  5. What can brands do better?
  6. How do you get people to care before it's too late?
  7. How can a consumer shop for eco-friendly products?

We're back with two special episodes! This first episode is with the founder of Lotus Moon Skincare, Lake Louise. We're discussing hormonal skin and summer skin tips for redheads.

Lake Louise is a respected wellness entrepreneur, healthy-aging strategist, and founder of Lotus Moon Skincare. A former high school and college professor, Lake Louise is a Stanford graduate and made her pioneering mark in this competitive arena 20 years ago, introducing the combination of wellness, beauty, and inclusivity. After tedious research centering on plant-based ingredients, she launched her unique line of products; Lotus Moon Skin Care in 2002 and Plain Jane Beauty in 2010. Lake's vision was to blend nature and science to enhance the skin's life cycle. It would also help heal and activate the skin and support the natural aging process beautifully.

We discuss the following topics:

1. How would you define ‘hormonal skin’ for someone listening who may not even know what this term is? How do hormones affect the skin?

2. What are your top tips for dealing with hormonal acne?

3. How about things to avoid [if dealing with hormonal acne]?

4. Exfoliation! It’s a topic we get asked a lot from redheads, especially those dealing with sensitive skin who are afraid to exfoliate. What are your tips for someone with sensitive skin but looking to exfoliate?

5. We love the term ‘We Believe in Healthy Aging, Not Anti-Aging’ stated on your website. Can you discuss this more?

6. Let's talk about the Lotus Moon Skincare Roll-On Eye Serum (found in the Summer Deluxe H2BAR Box) and Willowherb Serum (found in the upcoming July H2BAR Box). Redheads are enjoying them now and we know they'll love to know more from you!

14 Jul 2023S5, Ep 15: Do Redheads Feel More Pain At The Dentist? With Guest, Dr. Ethan Erwin00:43:51

You might be a redhead who refuses to see the dentist because you experience more pain. Do redheads actually feel more pain at the dentist? Is it a myth? Fact? We are speaking with Dr. Ethan Erwin today. He practices cosmetic and general dentistry, AND he's a natural redhead. He owns Smile Hot Springs in his hometown of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

We asked him some of the following questions:

  1. According to a study by the National Library of Medicine, natural redheads have more anxiety about the dentist than people with dark hair due to their resistance to local anesthetics. As a redhead yourself, what was your experience like at the dentist?
  2. Are dentists being trained to expect differences in their redheaded patients?
  3. What would you say to a listener who has been avoiding the dentist for years due to anxiety?
  4. It can be really hard to tell a doctor, “I need more anesthesia”. They may look at you as if you’re crazy because they have never heard this fact before, or they may disregard you because they think you’re reading out another false fact from TikTok. What’s the best way to tell a doctor about redheads needing more anesthesia?
  5. What are some options patients can ask for that they may not know about? (Example: I didn’t know Dentists could prescribe a mild sedative like Valium. Some dentists offer laser fillings without any injections)

28 Jul 2023S5, Ep 17: Enneagram, Coffee + Red Hair with Sarajane Case01:03:59

Sarajane Case is a trained Enneagram teacher, author of the popular self-help book The Honest Enneagram and Host of the Enneagram & Coffee Podcast. She helps people to find their perfect balance between self-care and growth so they can release shame on their path to doing less harm. Her new book, The Enneagram Letters: A poetic exploration of who you thought you had to be, released on October 18, 2022, is now available wherever you buy your books.

Follow Sarajane on Instagram: enneagramandcoffee

We have been longtime friends of Sarajane and asked some of the following questions for this exciting hour together:

  1. How was it growing up with red hair? What was your experience like?
  2. Once you graduated, like many of us, you dabbled in your talents (photography, etc) and have really seemed to find your niche with the Enneagram. At the time of this recording, you have 473k followers. How did this all come to be?!
  3. We did some research on the Enneagram and are really interested in talking about it. We’d love to identify our own types. Can we do it over this podcast? From a glance, Stephanie seems to be a 6: Loyalist, and Adrienne is 8: The Challenger.
  4. For anyone that doesn’t know you, you’re full of light and self-confidence. We know so many feel this way when they meet you and even follow you on social media. How did you gain so much self-confidence and love for yourself? Was this always the case? Each year, do you love yourself more?
  5. You look GORGEOUS with a red lip and red hair. When we think of you, we think of how you pull it off so well. Any advice for redheads who don’t think they can rock it?
  6. What are you working on now? What’s next for you?

04 Aug 2023S5, Ep 18: MORE Dating and Relationship Advice for Redheads with Anna Leonore00:58:47

Early in Season 5 (Episode 2), we talked with a redhead matchmaker and dating coach. We received so many DMs, comments, and emails about the episode. It was also great to hear your dating stories too!

We wanted to bring back the topic and this time we're talking to Anna Leonore. She is a redhead, Registered Nurse, and a TikTok Dating/Relationship Coach (so cool). Her relationship coaching is centered on trauma identification and healing in an effort to form and maintain healthy dating and romantic relationships.

Anna holds several college degrees and certifications, and her extensive trauma education comes from her time working as an emergency and trauma nurse, as well as her specialized training in managing childhood trauma within her years spent navigating the foster care system as a foster and adoptive parent.

Anna has been a relationship coach for the last several years and enjoys sharing her knowledge in an effort to help others navigate the current landscape of the dating world.

11 Aug 2023S5, Ep 19: Redheads + Laser Hair Removal with Matthew Rundle00:57:41

We're always asked if redheads can get laser hair removal. Season 2, Episode 12 we talked about this very topic. But, lasers are getting more and more advanced and is there an update *four* years later?

We're calling our guest all the way across the pond -- in London, UK. Matthew Rundle is our guest today. He owns Mayfair Aesthetics Laser and Skin Clinic with four (4) locations in London. Mayfair has won twelve (12) awards and helped over 10,000 clients achieve smooth, hair-free skin. Besides laser hair removal, Mayfair also offers a range of skin treatments including facials, peels, and semi-permanent makeup.

We ask him the following questions:

  1. What is laser hair removal and will it work for redheads?
  2. What is the difference between electrolysis and laser hair removal?
  3. What is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and who does it work for? Your clinic also offers semi-permanent makeup. What is this procedure like? Could a redhead benefit from this?
  4. Redheads usually have sensitive skin. Before a redhead goes in for a facial or a peel, what should they know first? Are there certain treatments that they should avoid?
  5. There are so many products on the market that claim to remove hair painlessly. There’s Bleam (the crystal hair eraser), epilators, creams, at-home IPL devices, etc. As consumers, how can we evaluate whether a product will work for us or not?
  6. Your clinics are on the cutting edge of hair removal technology (which keep getting better!). What new treatments/tools do you see on the horizon?

18 Aug 2023S5, Ep 20: How to Donate Your Red Hair + Purchase A Red Wig, With Suzanne Chimera + Jordan Fuelberth00:43:37

To kick off our 20th episode this season, we're doing something special today! It will be a different format because we're covering two important topics: how to donate your red hair + redhead wigs. To help us answer your questions, we have 2 different guests on today's episode:

The first guest is Suzanne Chimera. She’s a native New Yorker and President/Co-Founder of HairWeShare. She founded it in 2014 after being a custom wig designer for twenty years. HairWeShare creates custom wigs for children AND adults with medical hair loss. This is important because many wig organizations only make wigs for kids – but HairWeShare makes wigs for adults + kids.

Then, we called Jordan Fuelberth. She’s a 24-year-old natural redhead and works as a certified veterinary technician in Illinois. She has always been a huge supporter of WigsforKids and she feels blessed to be a donor! If you didn’t see her viral hair donation TikTok video with millions, and millions, and millions of views (click here), you’re in for a treat. If you happened to see around 36” of red hair being chopped off on TikTok, it was probably Jordan. She will detail how she donated 1 full yard of her own red hair!

If there is anything you can take away from this podcast, it is that redheads have the power to change lives in some way. It could be donating your unique hair, it could be sending this podcast to a friend or family member NEEDING a wig, and/or it could be donating monetarily to the organizations mentioned.

Jordan's product recommendations + hair tips for growth:

  1. Sugar Bear Hair Vitamin Collagen
  2. Matrix Leave-in Conditioner
  3. Every six months, get a trim
  4. Wash it every 2-3 days (not every day)

Daily, we get an array of questions from social media comments, emails, and direct messages. We thought it would be fun to bring these to the How to be a Redhead podcast! 08 Sep 2023S5 Ep 23: Let's Have a Conversation About Redhead Beauty 101 with Pam Cameron01:02:36

We have a passion for beauty at H2BAR. We, Adrienne and Stephanie, grew up in an environment where many of the women around us were passionate about skincare, makeup, and beauty routines. It influenced us to start HowtobeaRedhead.com in 2012 and why we wanted to start the first-ever redhead beauty-focused podcast (the How to be a Redhead podcast) in 2018. We jump into specific topics all of the time and sometimes forget there are redheads out there without a deep background in beauty.

Today's guest is Pam Cameron. We're so excited for you to meet our lovely, kind, natural-redhead podcast producer. Throughout 2023, we have had many conversations with Pam and she would ask us beauty-related questions. We thought, "Our listeners would love to hear this..."

So, here we go. We ask Pam the following questions:

  1. We’ll start off by asking about your beauty background. Was your mom into beauty? We know you have a redhead sister too! Is she into beauty?
  2. Before meeting us, what were your beauty concerns? Did you have any? Frizzy hair? Dry, itchy skin?
  3. We sent you a box of products with hair/skin items – and Finally Have Lashes/Finally Have Brows. You’ve been testing and trying items for a while now. What questions do you have? Have you enjoyed any products?
  4. We know you asked us about using mascara and how to apply it and what to do with the tube. What are your questions about mascara?
  5. Brows! How are you doing using Finally Have Brows!?
  6. Skincare: What does your skincare routine look like? What questions do you have about the steps when applying skincare?
  7. Do you wear SPF daily?
  8. Haircare: We know you just started using conditioner! How does your hair feel?
  9. Are there any products you want to try but are afraid to do so?

22 Sep 2023S5, Ep 25: Redheads + Tattoos with Lyndi Lou (Do We Feel More Pain?)00:41:50

We have done many episodes and have posted many articles on HowtobeaRedhead.com about redheads feeling more pain, or feeling pain differently. Since we know getting tattoos can be painful, we had to dedicate an entire episode to this topic. We couldn't have chosen a better guest than Lyndi Lou. She is a natural redhead, tattoo artist and owner of Mama Tried Tattoo Parlour in Louisville, Kentucky. She is also a painter & wood burner.

Follow her on Instagram: @lyndilou

Questions we ask her:

  1. What was it like for you growing up as a redhead?
  2. Your style is often described as colorful, whimsical, and humorous. How do you incorporate these elements into your tattoo designs?
  3. Do you think redheads have specific needs when it comes to choosing a tattoo artist?
  4. The pain tolerance of redheads is a debated topic. As a natural redhead, and someone who often sees people handle pain, what is your opinion?
  5. Have you ever had any clients who were hesitant about getting a tattoo because of pain, and how do you help them prepare for their appointment(s)?
  6. Can you tell us about any specific tattoo design that you're particularly proud of or that holds a special significance to you?
  7. Tattoo removal! Do you know about it?

15 Sep 2023S5 Ep 24: Expert Tips with Redhead Beauty Journalist, Shannon Bauer01:06:41

Shannon Bauer is a beauty journalist, certified professional makeup artist and natural redhead. She has been reporting on beauty trends and formulations, and has tested the latest products for 8+ years professionally. When not on the hunt for the next best mascara, you can find her running in Brooklyn, reading a book, or trying out a new restaurant.

Follow her on Instagram: @shannonmarie.beauty

We ask her the following:

  1. What was it like for you growing up as a redhead?
  2. You post a lot of photos with curly hair. Is your hair naturally curly? What’s your secret for beautiful curls?
  3. Do you do anything special to keep your red hair vibrant?
  4. We love talking about SKIN! We see on Instagram that you get waxed. What kind of hair removal would you recommend for redheads with skin too sensitive for waxing?
  5. You made a post about how good skin does not equal flawless skin. We think this is an important message considering so many people use filters to make their skin look perfectly smooth. What does it mean to have “good skin” – especially for redheads with sensitivity?
  6. You are an advocate for sunscreen as skincare. Which brands do you use?
  7. What products are you loving for your morning skincare routine right now?
  8. Red hair is trending in 2023 – it seems to trend every year. What do you think about this?

20 Oct 2023S5, Ep 29: Redhead Bullying in the UK with Singer/Songwriter, Stephanie Cheape00:55:21

Stephanie "Steph" Cheape is a natural redhead + singer/songwriter from Scotland. She has 300K followers on TikTok where she posts about Scottish culture, her music, and of course, life as a redhead. October is Bullying Awareness Month and we couldn't think of a better guest to discuss bullying, and her very own experience growing up with red hair in Scotland.

Follow her on Instagram

Questions we ask Steph:

  1. What was it like for you growing up as a redhead?
  2. It seems like there is a stigma in the UK surrounding red hair. Do you think this is true? And if so, why the cultural difference?
  3. Is there anything, you believe, we can do better to stop the UK stigma of redheads? Do you think it will ever stop?
  4. We know you wear our Finally Have Lashes mascara in Perfectly Auburn! We have more shades coming out this fall. Do you feel like redhead makeup has helped you embrace your red hair even more? If a redhead beauty line were more readily available in the UK, do you think it would help the redhead stigma?
  5. You’ve commented that TikTok users tend to be nicer than Instagram users. Do you think this has to do with a younger, more accepting generation? Do you feel like users are more accepting of your red hair on TikTok than Instagram?
  6. You share fun facts about redheads on social media. What’s your favorite fun fact you like to pull out?
  7. We know you’re a musician! Tell us about your music career, how it’s going + what’s next for you professionally. Any projects you can tell us about?

27 Oct 2023S5, Ep 30: "I've been blonde, brunette and a redhead" with Laura Jackel00:56:07

We're one week away from National #LoveYourRedHairDay weekend and we have one more episode dropping on November 3rd! We're having some of our favorite conversations to wrap up the season and we'd like everyone to welcome Laura Jackel to the How to be a Redhead podcast!

She's the Senior Lifestyle Writer at Mamamia, Australia’s super channel for women. She is also a mum of two boys and a former natural redhead. She recently wrote an article titled: 'I've been blonde, brunette and a redhead. There's one colour I would not go back to.' She details how she was born with natural red hair and journeyed through different hair colors. We are so excited for you to enjoy this interesting conversation. Some of the questions we asked her:

  1. Why did you write this article? And how was it to reflect on your hair journey?
  2. You write about now turning gray, saying, “The graying remains of my natural ginger hair are for now, still under my cool blonde highlights and I feel nostalgic and sad about the fact I didn't embrace its natural shade for longer than I did." We read your son is a natural redhead -- do you share tips with him on self-acceptance?
  3. “As a ginger-haired, pale, and freckle-faced kid, I would have done anything to change my hair color and complexion. I faced plenty of teasing for being a redhead..” Now for the question we ask our redhead guests: what was it like for you growing up as a redhead? From reading your article, it seems like it was not pleasant.
  4. You say you went back to red for your wedding and for the birth of your child. It made us wonder how your husband feels (or felt then) about your natural red hair and if he influenced you to go back to your natural red hair?
  5. We found it interesting you went from red to blonde to brunette, saying, “But in my late 20s when I decided I wanted to be taken more seriously at work, I completed the hair trifecta and became a brunette.” Tell us more.
  6. As we mentioned before, you went back to red for the birth of your child in 2010. Why?
  7. Now for the present day, you’re blonde. We wanted to read the last sentence of the article to listeners. You say, “Perhaps in years to come, I will branch out and embrace my greys or even try a candy pink, but right now I'm comfortable as a blonde."
  8. What advice do you have for redheads, no matter their age, struggling with their identity? Do you recommend trying a new hair color or embracing you?

19 Jul 2024Carrot Top: Comedy Legend Talks Vegas Residency, Success and Branding His Red Hair01:09:12

The How to be a Redhead podcast is back!

This is technically our 6th season, but we are dropping a new episode every Friday way into 2025 and have decided to simply call it a "new season". We know so many of you have requested a new episode and a video version every week -- we're here to deliver. Listen wherever you listen to podcasts, and you can now stream every episode weekly on YouTube! Click here to watch this episode's interview on our channel.

Our first guest this season is Scott Thompson, better known to fans around the world as Carrot Top. From humble beginnings on the comedy circuit to 31 star-studded appearances on "The Tonight Show," Carrot Top's journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. "When I started touring at the beginning of my career, I had two trunks and a strobe light," said Carrot Top. "Things got pretty crazy pretty fast, and before I knew it, I had a team touring the country in an 18-wheeler with 35 trunks full of props."

Now as a Las Vegas headliner and one of the best comedy residencies, Carrot Top can be seen nightly in Las Vegas or in a city near you, giving guests a spectacle worthy of most arena rock bands and features lights, music, fog machines, and streamer cannons – all in addition to his trunks full of props.

Just like How to be a Redhead, Carrot Top's entire brand is about being a redhead. We had a blast talking to Scott/Carrot Top and we think you'll find him down to earth, relatable and of course -- hilarious!

This Olympics-themed episode will leave you feeling inspired, thankful, and motivated. Our next guest is Clara Brown. On the world championship stage, she has won 11 total medals, including 3 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze in both track cycling and road cycling.

Growing up, she had a strong athletic background in gymnastics, running, and skiing until she suffered a neck injury at 12. Despite this setback, she found solace in rowing during high school. However, it wasn't until after college that she discovered her true calling in para-cycling, where she excelled and earned accolades.

The U.S. Paralympics Cycling announced 13 athletes -- seven men and six women -- to compete for Team USA at the Paralympic Games Paris 2024, and Clara Brown is one of those 13. We're thrilled to watch her compete later this month in Paris!

Beyond sports, Clara enjoys cooking, hiking, and camping, and harbors ambitions of becoming a pilot and maybe even going to law school.
