06 Jul 2022 | Has My Child Got an Eating Disorder? | 00:28:59
It is estimated 1.25 million people have an eating disorder in the U.K. and the data is pretty similar worldwide. Eating disorders are a mental health condition where you use the control of food to cope with feelings and other situations. Unhealthy eating behaviours may include eating too much or too little or worrying about your weight or body shape. The key, in my view, is being able to pick up on the early warning signs, so support and intervention can be put in place before it becomes an established disorder. In this episode I talk through the top 7 patterns of behaviour to look out for. If youāve been affected by the content in this episode, you can access further information and support via BEAT EATING DISORDERS - THE UK'S EATING DISORDER CHARITY Here are the highlights: (01:44) From anorexia to bulimia - what is an eating disorder? 29 Sep 2021 | Managing Sibling Conflict | 00:27:26
This episode is all about how to manage sibling conflict. Now let me start by being totally honest and upfront - sibling rivalry, disagreements and fall outs are normal. Your children will want to kill each other at times and really dislike each other most of the rest of the time - and thatās normal, you arenāt a bad parent, you havenāt failed and they are certainly not going to turn into a psyho killer!! However, there are things we do as parents which makes things worse, which we need to stop doing, and there are some new strategies we can employ to help give our children the tools to manage conflict. 23 Feb 2022 | If Only I Knew | 00:18:03
This is episode takes a slightly different tack to parenting - looking at it from the perspective of āIf only I knew!ā It takes the approach if I knew then what I knew now - how would I parent differently? So if youāre an expectant parent with your first child and youāre listening to this, or youāre expecting your second, third, fourth child or maybe youāre a parent looking at making a fresh start with your parenting. āThe most valuable lesson we can teach our children is how to be happy and confident with who they are.āÆEverything else falls into place when they truly believe in themselves.ā That is my absolute honest belief and itās not because I donāt value education and what qualifications give our children - itās just without confidence children can never ever really reach their full potential - and who wants a child growing into an unfulfilled adult??? I get asked about back-chat a lot as I know itās something we can really struggle with as parents. We usually associate this type of behaviour with the teenagers being rebellious and pushing every boundary, but itās about whatās happening in our childrenās internal world than something which is specifically related to a given age or stage of development. 21 Sep 2022 | How to Talk to Children About Loss | 00:27:11
Whilst the release of this episode is immediately after the death Queen Elizabeth II, the approach I suggest is intended to cover any situation where a child comes into contact with the death of someone - whether thatās a direct relative, a friend, neighbour, public figure etc. For some the current world event may mean you are talking about death for the very first time and your child might be really still quite young, for others the Queenās death might be bringing up old sadness for a loved one who has already died, others might have people in their lives who are currently unwell, or your children are asking questions about your own longevity. Iāll talk you through the eight principles to be mindful of when starting, and maintaining those conversations about death.
Here are the highlights: (00:33) The Queenās death may prompt difficult questions (03:02) Be honest, clear and direct (05:54) Childrenās biggest fear is abandonment (10:34) Crying make us human (14:12) Communication is key (17:22) We donāt always have the perfect answer (20:27) Thereās no one size fits all (23:22) We want our children to know the facts š Let's grow our village together, please share this episode with at least one friend š Complete the listener poll to let me know what you'd like in future episodes š You can watch the Bucket Emptying Episodes on Youtube š Access the free resources mentioned in the episodes š Join our campaign One Million Moments to reduce the number of children struggling with mental health challenges from 17% to 10% by 2025. 02 Jun 2024 | Bucket Emptying Episodes; Breathing & Take 10 | 00:09:38
Today's bucket emptying episode is all an amazing breathing technique; Take 10. You can use this an adult, as well as also teaching it to your kids. I've tried all sorts of breathing techniques, and young people often really struggle with this notion of focusing in on the breath, anchoring themselves in the breath. Instead of asking them to focus on the breath itself and changing the breath, this strategy asks them to focus on counting their breath which is so much easier in the moment. š Let's grow our village together, please share this episode with at least one friend š Complete the listener poll to let me know what you'd like in future episodes š You can watch the Bucket Emptying Episodes on Youtube š Access the free resources mentioned in the episodes š Join our campaign One Million Moments to reduce the number of children struggling with mental health challenges from 17% to 10% by 2025.
