Woohoo! Welcome to episode one! I thought I would start off by taking the mic and kicking off by explaining the idea behind “How Not to Run a Business”.

  • How do deal with failure.
  • The truth about your chances of success.
  • My journey and story about how I started working for myself.

Key Learnings:

07 Mar 2022From CEO to Entrepreneur with Jeannette Linfoot | Ep 0200:49:44

Jeannette started off her career working for the UK Government as an economist but after deciding it wasn't for her, she jumped into the travel industry. She worked her way up to Managing Director for Emerging Markets for TUI and CEO for the Travel Division for Saga, running 4 businesses with £370 million of turnover. 3 years ago, she took the leap to leave her corporate job to become an entrepreneur running her own portfolio of businesses. She shares her journey into entrepreneurship and running her own businesses, the mistakes she has made, and what she would do differently. In a fun, lively, and down to earth conversation, we discuss:

  • Is being an entrepreneur a mindset or an actual job?
  • Making the leap from the relative security of a high-profile, corporate job to being an entrepreneur.
  • What she would do differently when starting out in business?
  • Planning for success and embracing failure.
  • The mistakes and failures when getting started in the business.
  • How to deal with the inevitable negative feedback and other people's opinions.
  • Be true to yourself and define your culture for your business.
  • Dealing with the aftermath when big plans fail.
  • Trusting your gut and instincts.
  • Empower yourself to say no.

Key Learnings:

  • You need to be flexible when starting out and not rely on what you learned in your corporate role.
  • You have one life that you are solely responsible for so don’t waste it never taking risks and living your dreams.
  • You should listen to your gut and trust your instincts.
  • You need to learn to empower yourself to say no.

07 Mar 2022From Air Freshener Exec to Supermarket Founder with Ruth Anslow | Ep 0400:54:46

I sat down with my good friend and all-around superstar entrepreneur Ruth Anslow who founded the ethical supermarket chain HISBE with her sister Amy. She is passionate about businesses being a force for good in the world and founded The Good Business Club which supports businesses committed to making a positive impact.

In the conversation we explore why Ruth left her corporate career to start a business in a highly competitive industry she knew very little about.

We discuss:

  • Feeling dissatisfied with life and taking action to make a change.
  • Starting a movement and building a following.
  • What would she do differently if she went back and started again?
  • The fears Ruth had when starting and business and did they come true?
  • Dealing with the waning of enthusiasm and confidence when everyone around you doesn't think you can make it work.
  • One of their biggest failures in expanding HISBE, what went wrong, and how did Ruth deal with it personally.
  • Her views on how best to deal with failure moving forward.

Key Learnings:

  • Surround yourself with people that believe in you when confidence or enthusiasm waned.
  • Share the burden and the pain at the early stages with people in your network.
  • Things will always take longer and cost more than you planned.
  • Don’t take failure personally. It doesn’t mean what you make it mean.

  • His approach to hiring people.
  • Why people leave your business is always a good thing.
  • Everyone should open a business one time in their life.
  • How do the closing and selling a business have the same effect on you?

Simon Squibb is a serial entrepreneur, angel investor, motivational speaker, and mentor. He has started 19 businesses, invested in over 75, and has mentored hundreds of founders. Having sold his award-winning insight-driven branding and digital agency, Fluid, to PwC, Simon now focuses on inspiring, motivating, and guiding both budding and experienced entrepreneurs by sharing his personal experiences, insights, ideas, and tips on his website simonsquibb.com and through his social channels.

05 Oct 2022Can You "Quiet Quit" Your Job as an Entrepreneur? | Ep 1400:25:35

Have you heard of the latest buzzphrase on social media? Quiet quitting describes people who show up to their job and do only what is asked of them. No more than their contracted hours and job role, putting in no additional effort.

In this episode I ask the question, as an entrepreneur, can you quietly quit your own job as a business owner?

I explore that question and more. I look at the two opposing camps of the hustle culture vs. putting an emphasis on working less, enjoying other areas of life more and having an improved sense of mental health. What impact this has on individuals and why big corporates should be seriously worried about the movement of quiet quitting?

I'll ask you some questions to consider about your business and your life that will shift your perspective on what it means to be an entrepreneur.

14 Dec 2022How to Rest and Get Sh*t Done with Siobhan Fox | Ep 1900:47:19

What happens when two entrepreneurs with ADHD and a propensity to swear record a podcast episode? Well, you can find out!

We joined forces to discuss the idea that "the rest is the work". Resting is as important as any work we do. Growing up in a society that vilifies laziness, rest and napping have led us to burnout and give ourselves a hard time if we're anything but productive and efficient.

We stick two fingers up to hustle culture and work every hour under the sun. We say hello to rest, naps, putting ourselves first and going unscheduled breaks when you can't be arsed!

Here are some key bits we discuss:

  • What she means by "rest is the work"
  • Why you should consider saying f*ck off to hustle culture, especially when you start a business.
  • The most important thing you need to get right before you invest any money into advertising.
  • Why you should avoid Bro Marketing.
  • What success is, to her.
  • Her experience of burnout and what she learned and now does differently.
  • Why looking after your brain is vital if you are a solo entrepreneur.

Also, listen out for my exceptional impression of Alan Sugar. It's superb!

15 Mar 2023How Not to Scale A Business: Entrepreneur's Stories Alex Chisnall | Ep 2901:03:05

My friend Alex Chisnall did me the honour of joining me on the podcast to talk about his journey from cabin crew, to not being able to get a job interview at Tesco to becoming an entrepreneur.

Come on his journey from serving drinks at 35,000 feet to having a number one podcast on its 500 episode after 6 years and his own successful podcast agency.

He's the man responsible for helping me get How Not to Run a Business off the ground, so he's a very special guest.

It's an open, honest, and frank conversation about his journey, his successes and failures. He started his journey having no idea what he wanted to do. After spending a year developing a business plan, he got started building a sports injury clinic. It all came crashing down around Alex to the point he had a debt collector park his car on his drive and refuse to move it until he paid up. Now he's running his podcast and his podcast agency.

This is an important lesson in scaling too quickly and taking a step back from your business too quickly, not planning and avoiding paying your rent!

We touch on his journey to launch his podcast from 2 downloads in the first week, then to 50,000 downloads a week. It's a great lesson is perseverance and determination.

It's an incredible conversation, Alex's honest is refreshing and you will learn a lot!

This episode is useful for small businesses that are seeking investment from investors.

06 Apr 2023How to Improve Your Fitness as an Entrepreneur | Ep 3100:54:13

How can we, as entrepreneurs improve our fitness levels and do more exercise?

Fitness and exercise doesn't come naturally to everyone, unless you are fully committed or a personal trainer then you may find it a challenge to get out for a run or down the gym for a workout. This is even harder if you have dependants like kids or people you care for.

The challenges entrepreneurs and business owners face only makes it harder. Especially when you start out or you are going through a rough patch.

That said making exercise part of your routine is critical to support you in being successful in your business.

In this episode I explore the topic with personal trainer, fitness expert and entrepreneur Lynsey Treharne. She is deeply passionate about helping women get into the weight section of the gym but anyone can benefit from her passion, knowledge and experience.

  • How can we improve our fitness and wellbeing with the pressures of running a business?
  • Is there a link between success in business and having a success fitness regime?
  • How do you manage to fit exercise in when you have no two weeks that look the same?

22 Jun 2023Founders on Failure with Krisi Smith from Bird & Blend Tea Co. | Ep 4100:53:01

Krisi started Bird and Blend with business partner Mike knowing nothing about tea or running a business. She drew up their mission statement on a piece of paper in the pub whilst working as a ski instructor in Canada.

We go on the journey from the start-up, working in her parent's back bedroom to running 14 retail stores across the UK and a successful international ecommerce website.

Krisi opens up about the challenges she faced as a founder. Burning out twice, not sleeping with severe anxiety and heart palpations. She shares some strategies for dealing with it and getting support.

A great episode for any founder or wannabe one. Packed with honest, real and useful advice.

We touch on:

  • How she realised her dream of running her own business when she had no idea what to do.
  • Importance of quality and product.
  • The challenges of having 100 teas in their range.
  • Standing by your values and what you do.
  • The challenges of letting other people take over your brand and grow it bigger than yourself.
  • The importance of failure and learning from it.
  • Why having a high tolerance for stress shouldn't be celebrated.
  • How to get support with burnout as a founder and entrepreneur.

18 Dec 2024How to Review Your End of Year | Ep 5200:21:52

Year-end reflections can be painful. I am here to make it less so. In this episode of How Not to Run a Business, I’m talking about the mental and emotional challenges of looking back on your year as an entrepreneur and small business owner.

I’ll walk you through the seven common mistakes people make when reviewing their year, and how to approach it with a clearer perspective. We’ll cover things like:

  • Balancing the good and the bad – because it’s rarely all one or the other.
  • Making sense of your finances without getting overwhelmed.
  • Setting goals that are actually achievable.
  • Recognising what was within your control and what wasn’t.
  • The value of getting an outside perspective and documenting your progress properly.

Reflection doesn’t have to feel like a punishment or a pointless exercise. Done well, it’s an opportunity to acknowledge your achievements, learn from what didn’t go to plan, and prepare for the year ahead with a bit more clarity.

So, if you want to start the new year on the right foot, this one’s for you.
