28 Feb 202274. Fake it till you make it? A chat on Imposter Syndrome with Malaika Simmons00:48:00

Send us a text

What is and isn't Imposter Syndrome, and can it be mastered?

Back in October 2021 I had a LIVE conversation with Malaika Simmons, MSHE, PMP, TEDx Speaker and Creator of the Momentology™️ Method.

We talked about:

- Where does imposter syndrome come from?
- How do I know the difference between imposter syndrome and "being realistic"?
- How do I avoid coming off as too arrogant?
- What if I really haven't done enough or my skills don't match what job posters are asking for?
- What's the right amount of confidence?
- How do I stop being afraid of big goals?

This was such a good conversation, I hope you enjoy it and learn from it as much as I did.

07 Mar 202275. Where are they now? Dan Reed on going back00:48:57

Send us a text

Today’s episode is part of my series ‘Where are they now’ to check up on how some of my past guests are getting on and how sometimes the best laid plans can go differently.

And today I am speaking with Dan Reed on the concept of boomerang employees. This is not just a concept, but personal too. Very personal.

Dan
was a guest on the show back in August 2021 on episode 46 titled ‘Networking Secrets from the Career Dad’ and we had chatted a week or so after he started at Adobe, his dream company.

Then in Jan 2022, Dan made the surprise announcement on LinkedIn that he was going back to his former employer Barclays Bank.

Why would he do that? And how did he go back? How was the journey? Dan reveals it ALL, he literally holds nothing back.  We talk about things that a lot of us hesitate to talk about: shame, embarrassment, depression, mental health, consequent weight gain, therapy, pride.

Hope you take away some key lessons you can apply to your own career!

14 Mar 202276. Isabelle Kumar: 'Anchor' your Career00:43:55

Send us a text

No matter your profession, chances are you watch the news on your TV, laptop or phone. But what about the person sharing the news story? What’s their story? How do they get so confident to speak in front of millions of people on national television, night after night?

My guest today is Isabelle Kumar, who has been a news anchor and producer at places like CNN, Reuters and EuroNews. We have so much to learn from Isabelle, who has interviewed global leaders including the heads of state of Russia, Iran, Colombia, Brazil, Jordan, to sports icons like Mike Tyson, fashion icons like JP Gautier, Karl Lagerfeld and so many more.

In this conversation, Isabelle shares the unlikely fashion she landed an internship at CNN and how it changed the entire trajectory of her career, and how she worked her way from producing the news to becoming a news anchor. She also shares two of her most memorable high profile interviews, and trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

21 Mar 202277. Ann Hiatt: How to 'Bet on Yourself'01:00:13

Send us a text

What was it like to work with Jeff Bezos and his founder team as he was scaling up Amazon in the early 2000’s?

What was it like to work at Google while it was rising from the third most dominant search engine to number one?

My guest today is Ann Hiatt, who is likely the only person on my podcast who has intimately worked with founders and CEOs of three companies we know so well today, back when they were in the high growth phase:

Jeff Bezos at Amazon,

Marissa Meyer (former CEO at Yahoo, back when she was heading Products at Google) and

Eric Schmidt, former CEO and Chairman of Google.

 But wait, there’s more!

Ann is not just another Silicon Valley success story. Because when you think of Silicon Valley, you think of engineers. Ann studied … well, NOT engineering! International Studies, at the Bachelor and PhD level!

In this super interesting conversation, Ann goes into detail about the various steps it took to get hired at Amazon, Google and how she eventually created the ‘Chief of Staff’ role for herself working closely with Eric Schmidt.

There is so much gold here, simply put, this this is an unmissable conversation.

25 Apr 202283: Jon Hyman: Lawyer up!00:44:56

Send us a text

Today I’m fortunate to have Jon Hyman on the show. Jon is an Employment Lawyer and in essence, the voice on the other end of a phone when a business needs advice on firing an employee, a policy or agreement drafted, guidance on a leave of absence, disability accommodation, or internal complaint or investigation, or any others issue that plague human resources professionals and businesses daily. And when the need arises, Jon works in litigation and has likely seen all sorts of appalling behaviour by both employers and employees, both of which shall not be named!

Jon is one of my favourite people to follow on LinkedIn, for multiple reasons:

  1. His posts often have tongue in cheek humour about the most grueling workplace issues
  2. and no matter what, Jon is always honest
  3. It’s rare to see lawyers speak up so candidly on social media.
  4. Jon wears multiple hats, and among other things, he is now a podcaster!

So, get ready to ‘witness’ a conversation where we ‘raise the bar’!

In this fun conversation, Jon and I cover:

- how legal dramas on TV compare to working in a law firm in real life

- what were some of Jon's career defining roles and how he got hired there

- how a random call Jon accidentally answered changed the trajectory of his career

- Why Jon decided to work on the employer side, and not on the employee: Jon shares his decision making process, which I think can help you if you are at a similar crossroad

- The most facepalm moment (there have been many!) Jon has witnessed in his legal career.

If you're looking for a fun, thought provoking conversation and learn life lessons directly from an employment lawyer, this is an episode you cannot miss!

02 May 202284: Mita Mallick: Thriving at J&J, Pfizer, Unilever and Beyond00:45:14

Send us a text

My guest today is LinkedIn Top Voice Mita Mallick. Mita has headed consumer brands at places like Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Unilever. The following excerpt from her linkedin bio brings us to what Mita is doing today:

“As a kid, I loved watching commercials instead of actual tv shows (still do!) and going to the store with my mom, studying all the new packaging and products on shelf, testing and trying new things. But as a kid, I didn’t see many stories being told that included people who looked like me. I was the funny looking dark skinned girl, with a long funny looking braid, whose parents spoke funny English. Until it wasn't funny anymore. I was bullied by my peers for years. And I just desperately wanted to fit in. I wanted to belong.

I have spent over 15 years as a storyteller. Leading iconic brands like AVEENO, AVON Color Cosmetics, Chapstick, Vaseline, Suave and Dove. Throughout my career, I have fought hard to ensure people like me are included. Ensuring Black and Brown people were represented in campaigns. Ensuring products we created were for all skin tones. Ensuring we were not reinforcing stereotypes.
I believe diversity of thought doesn’t happen without diversity of representation. When you have all those points of views, life experiences, and cultural backgrounds coming together around a table. Colliding, clashing, and collaborating- that’s when magic happens. That’s when we come up with that one break through innovative idea, campaign, innovation- to authentically and purposefully serve customers and communities.”

In this conversation, Mita and I chat about how she got hired at her dream companies Johnson & Johnson and Unilever and how she transitioned to the DEIB space. We also talk about what it means on a day to day basis work in this space, and how we can all become allies.

If you enjoy honesty and clarity on a difficult subject, you will LOVE this conversation!

10 May 202285. Joel Lalgee: Hiring Those who Hire YOU00:57:09

Send us a text

My guest today is in Wisconsin, USA and his name is Joel Lalgee. Joel is a recruiter who hires recruiters, and in this episode we are going to talk about it all, Joel’s career and the state of the recruitment industry, and how that impacts job seekers and others in transition. If you don’t follow Joel on LinkedIn, I highly recommend you start, because his is probably one of the funniest accounts, and his memes are epic, and you know what they say about humour: it’s exaggerated truth.

In this episode, Joel and I chat about:

 - What his original plans were when Joel was younger and how those plans got derailed

 - Which position has been THE career defining role for Joel and how he got hired there

- How Joel got hired in his current position (hint there was no resume involved!)

- How Joel has transitioned from a small business owner to an employee

 - Joel’s opinion on what’s HOT in recruitment. We talk about how the demand for recruiters is sky high these days, that there are more demand than software engineers. What are these recruiters being hired for, is it all mostly for recruiting tech roles? And is it all a bubble?

 - What according to Joel, is are some of the biggest mistakes he sees job seekers make these days

 And so much more!

16 May 202286: Where are they now: Jay Beech on being Laid Off twice in 5 Months00:28:57

Send us a text

Today’s episode is part of my series ‘Where are they now’ to check up on how some of my past guests are getting on and how sometimes the best laid plans can go differently.

And today I am speaking with Jay Beech. Jay was a guest on the show back in June 2021 on episode 38 titled ‘From Redundancy to 8 job offers in 2 weeks’’ and we had chatted a month or so after his #HireJayBeech campaign which went viral on TikTok and LinkedIn. Then, in Oct 2021, just 5 months later, he was unfortunately laid off again. His #HireJayBeech sequel was born and Jay started his new gig pretty quickly.

In this episode, Jay shares with us how he navigated:
-another layoff so quickly after the last one,
-an ADHD diagnosis while dealing with the above
-how he selected his current employer and how the process was different from last time
-how he handles trolls
-and how leaning in to being himself has attracted unprecedented opportunities and changed his career and life.

Send us a text

The great resignation is real, and it’s happening, daily. But there’s a lot you need to know, before you do something you regret.
Like what?!
Basics of Employment Law.

Don't be ignorant, this stuff can save you a lot of headache! Employment Law seems technical and boring and you think it's not your problem.

If any of these is your problem:
- Bullying, harassment and discrimination
- Termination - unfair dismissal, resignation, weird non-compete clauses
- How covid has impacted work - flexible working and health & safety systems including mental health
- Join me on this LIVE with the fabulous London based barrister and Communication Coach Kolarele Sonaike as we talk about: Universal Employment Law principles we ALL need to know.

30 May 202288: Josh Braun: How to Sell without Selling your Soul01:08:20

Send us a text

My guest today is Josh Braun. Josh is one of the leading voices on LinkedIn on all things Sales, and I love having conversations with Sales trainers because I think sales skills are life skills.

I have been following Josh for quite some time now, and his advice is always fluffless and on point. I had a feeling that Josh would be a pretty great podcast guest, but when I saw Josh’s past career, especially in education (Josh is a qualified Elementary school teacher, or as we call it here in Europe, Primary school) I KNEW he’d make a great guest.

In this conversation PACKED with so many powerful stories, Josh shares:

- How he chose Teaching as a Career, got hired at this first teaching job and how he infused tech into the classroom in the 1990's

- How Josh pivoted from Teaching to Sales and the transferable skills that helped him to successfully make that shift

- Why Josh started his own sales training firm and how he got hired by his very first paid client

- Favourite advice that can work in parallel to help someone whether in Sales or a career transition

- His unique perepective on rejection

We even did a demo where I pretended to be an annoyed prospect and Josh was cold calling me!

This is such a good conversation, you don't want to miss it!

06 Jun 202289. Julie Winkle Giulioni: Why 'Promotions are so Yesterday'00:45:00

Send us a text

My guest today is in Pasadena, California and her name is Julie Winkle Giulioni. Julie is the author of ‘Promotions Are So Yesterday: Redefine Career Development, Help Employees Thrive’ and the co-author of the international bestseller, ‘Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go’. Julie is also named by Inc. Magazine as a Top 100 Leadership Speaker and in this conversation, we talk about Julie’s career and how every single person alive today can thrive in their own career.

We talk in detail about Julie's own career, her favourite roles, and what made her 'trade in the illusion of security for the illusion of freedom' and venture out on her own.

The underlying theme of her latest book 'Promotions are so yesterday' is so key in 2022 and beyond. We talk about how the idea for this book came about, and the answer is quite personal.

We also talk about two particular concepts from her book that I think the listener will find even more  valuable:

a) “Pretirement: the period leading up to retirement and a time for reciprocal contribution”.  (And spoiler alert: it’s not related to age).

b) "It’s called work for a reason. If it was enjoyable, they’d call it fun.” Sheesh, we’ve all heard that. Julie shares with us how we can bring contentment, and dare we say, joy, in our work.

This is such a valuable and fun conversation, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

13 Jun 202290. Jules White: Live It, Love It, Sell It!00:49:43

Send us a text

There are so many reasons I invited Jules White on the podcast.

She’s not only the only person I know who’s been on Dragon’s Den and had a TEDx Talk, but also run successful businesses and been through multiple layoffs. Jules exhibits what a lot of us don’t know we have: grit and determination, to get back up when life knocks us down.

In this episode, Jules gets down and dirty with us and holds truly nothing back:

Bankruptcy,
layoffs,
the reality behind her experience on Dragon's Den,
miscarriage,
divorce,
loss,
business partnership breakup,
starting employment again,
starting her sales coaching consultancy,
and so much more.

This conversation is rife with precious career and life lessons that I'm sure will help you.

21 Jun 202291. Andy Griffiths: Writing your Own Story00:57:04

Send us a text

My guest today is Andy Griffiths
If you haven’t heard of Andy, and if you have kids/nephews/nieces, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the Treehouse Books: the 13 Storey Treehouse, 26 Storey Treehouse and so many more. These books are created by New York Times bestselling team Andy Griffiths who is the writer and Terry Denton, the illustrator.
Andy Griffiths is one of Australia’s most popular children’s authors. He and Terry have collaborated on more than 33 bestselling books since 1997. In Australia, Andy and Terry’s books have sold over 10 million copies, won innumerable awards including Book of the Year.

Their Treehouse Series in particular have been embraced by children around the world and now published in more than 35 countries. Five of the books in the series have been adapted for the stage and have all had sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera house, as well as highly successful seasons in the Netherlands, New Zealand and the US.

I’ve brought Andy to the podcast for so many reasons: to learn about Andy’s career, because it is a prime example of squiggly career path vs a career ladder that we’ve all believed to be true for so long, and this is such a valuable episode.

In this episode, Andy takes us behind the scenes and shares what real life was like, before being 'discovered' by Macmillan Publishers. Andy shares his stories of courage, heartbreak, rejection and how that journey brought him closer to his current success.

We also talk about how he and Terry achieved global success in their fifties and sixties, and what that means in the world today that is quite obsessed with youth.

We also talk about 'cotton wool' childhoods and why Andy is so vocal about it on social media.

Whether or not you have children, nephews or nieces, I know this will prove to be a valuable listen.

27 Jun 202292. Priya Ramesh: 'Master' your Leadership00:47:56

Send us a text

If you want to be a fantastic leader, today’s conversation is perfect for you. My guest is Priya Ramesh. Priya is a Master Certified Coach and that in itself, I think is a pretty big deal, there are only 70 MCC’s in India and  only 1,327 wordwide.  Priya was my Mentor Coach during my Coaching Certification Program and I have learnt so much from her. Today, the tables have turned, I’m the one asking the questions, and I know this will be such a valuable conversation

In this episode, Priya and I talk about:

- What Priya's original plans were upon graduating from university, and what actually ended up happening in reality

- What has been the most transformative position Priya has held in your career, and how she got there

- They say a shoemaker’s children usually go barefoot. Being a coach and helping and guiding so many thousands of people, doesn’t always translate to helping yourself objectively. How can someone listening today, who is heavily in that service mindset, put on their own oxygen mask first?

- What it's really like being a Leadership Coach and what are some of the traits of a top coach

- Priya's own coaching model the beautifully encapsulates the coach/client relationship. My South Asian listeners will particularly enjoy this one, and the rest will learn two new Sanskrit words

13 Jul 202294. Chris Anderson: An Unedited Career00:58:57

Send us a text

My guest today has worked with CNN, Huff Post, Business Insider, HSBC, LinkedIn, and even at a top gaming company in Hong Kong. Chris Anderson recently moved back to his native California after some very adventurous years in South East Asia. There are 3 reasons I wanted to bring Chris on the show:

a)     Chris not only talks about career pivots, one of my favourite topics, but has also lived it

b)     The one theme in most of Chris’ career is related to content: managing it, mastering it, learning what works and what doesn’t

c)      Chris spearheaded the ‘Top Startups’ while at LinkedIn News and I want to talk about start ups: the good, the bad and the ugly.

In this episode,  Chris and I cover a lot of topics, including:

- How he got hired at LinkedIn and how life changed within a couple of months when Covid hit SE Asia.

- Applying to listed jobs vs the hidden job market

- How everyone is a content creator to some degree, and how we can up our game

We really enjoyed this conversation, I hope you do too!

13 Sep 202296. Enrique Camacho: Army Colonel to Uber Driver to Founder!01:01:15

Send us a text

My guest today is a US Army Colonel turned Uber driver. True Story! I’m going to take an excerpt from a LinkedIn post of his that blew up in May 2022 and got 60,000 likes and thousands of comments and shares:

“I was kind of a big deal, at least I thought. I worked for some of the most recognized names in defense, served at a few national agencies. Then I started Model Citizen Coffee Company and realized - I need more money! So, between writing business plans and developing product lines, I drove an Uber and managed a 4.9999999 star rating - thank you Mr. 3 Star, blew-up my 5-star rating.

Here's what I learned in the experience. Nobody cared that I was "Kind of a Big Deal”. I asked my Uber riders lots of questions, and empathized with: Funny thing is, only 3 out of 453 passengers I delivered ever asked about my story. Perhaps the 450 thought Enrique Camacho, was a middle aged immigrant supporting his family the best way he could, with a limited skill set and future.

Truth bomb hit me. We're only as good as our last race. People don't really care what we've done. They're interested in what we can do for them today and tomorrow. It's not a bad thing, it's a realization that we must continuously learn and grow, so we don't stagnate.

This conversation is a brilliant lesson in checking ego, taking baby steps, facing the fear and doing it anyway.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

My guest today is Ben Lampkin. Who’s Ben Lampkin, I hear you ask. Well, you may not have heard of Ben, but I can guarantee you’ve definitely heard of his boss, Sir Elton John! Ben is Managing Director of Rocket Sports, a sports marketing business specialising in talent management, brand partnerships, etc, co-founded by Elton John.

While that’s a pretty cool thing in and of itself, it’s not the only reason I’ve invited Ben to the show. Ben has had a non-traditional career path, and stopped studies after high school. I’m grateful to podcasting as a medium, because with this conversation, I want to showcase that there are multiple ways to be successful.

In this warm and forthcoming exchange, Ben shares with us:

- how he got hired by Rocket Sports,

19 Oct 202299. Angus Grady: Unlock your Best Life00:52:29

Send us a text

My guest today is The LinkedIn Unlocker Angus Grady. But wait, there's much more to Angus than LinkedIn, so much more.
I met Angus on Clubhouse around 18 months ago and my jaw drops every single time I hear Angus speak. The words flow out like honey, but wait, that’s not the only reason I have invited Angus on the show.
Angus and I are going to be talking about some darker facets of life, like alcohol addiction, and the fact that Angus has been sober since 2004. In fact, during a recent chat, Angus wrote to me:

Sobriety is, like wearing several pairs of glasses at once, everything is clear, bright and so colourful. I remember my very first sober autumn and wondering why people weren’t standing and staring at the colour of the leaves. I had missed so much with my eyes half open.” If you or someone you know is recovering from any kind of addiction, I know this conversation will help you. Heck, no matter what, this conversation is golden!

Angus shares all kinds of tools with us today: to unlock LinkedIn, to overcome addiction and to just, be better, day after day.

Happy Birthday Angus, that lovely post is here.

25 Oct 2022100. Nimrat Kaur: From Homeland to Hollywood00:45:49

Send us a text

It's episode 100 of How I Got Hired! And I can't think of a better way to mark the occasion than share this conversation with you.
My guest today is a very talented actor who has starred in hugely successful productions like the Homeland series, as well Hindi movies like The Lunchbox (screened at the Cannes Film festival), Airlift and more recently, Dasvi. We are going to chat with Nimrat Kaur and trace her career of nearly two decades.

In this revealing chat, Nimrat talks about:

- How Nimrat got accepted into a prestigious college and decided to leave it behind to pursue a career in acting, and how her family responded

- How Nimrat started her career in print and TV ads, working in theater, and how she got her first big break, after many years of ups and downs, that changed her career trajectory.

- Taking a different path from what is typically seen in Indian commercial cinema, which tends to be heavily stereotyped by performers’ dancing and lip syncing, predictable scripts and women being in supporting roles. We also talk about how this decision to carve her own path played out pragmatically especially in the early days (bills to pay while still being authentic to who you are.)

- How an actor like her defines success

- Some cool and exciting projects she is currently working on (I can't wait for 2023 and watch Nimrat in Happy Teacher's Day!)

Hope you enjoyed this conversation as much as I did!

15 Nov 2022101. Lisa Bowman: Fighting Back Harrassment00:50:02

Send us a text

Today’s conversation will be with a very very courageous woman: Lisa Bowman. Lisa has held Executive level marketing roles at UPS and was most recently the global CMO for The United Way, the international network of over 1,800 local nonprofit fundraising affiliates.
Why do I call Lisa brave? Lisa experienced harassment at her job, spoke up, made some people uncomfortable, and was eventually flat out fired as retaliation for speaking up.  Listen to this excerpt:

“I am a big believer that experiences mean nothing if you don’t learn from them. When this experience chose me, it offered me the opportunity to learn and educate others on the hard reality: if you don’t speak up for yourself, sadly, nobody will do it for you. With the continuing increase in stories of workplace harassment, along with the by now predictable failures of so many organizations to respond appropriately, it’s understandable that employees end up feeling helpless and more likely to give up rather than stand up and fight, believing that self-preservation and silence in an effort to protect their careers are the smartest courses of action.”

One of the reasons for having Lisa on the show is that she’s going through her journey, as we speak. This isn’t a ‘now that all the bad stuff is behind you, let’s talk’ type of interview. And we live in this twisted world where the person who does the wrong thing, walks away completely unscathed, and the one who is violated, is punished. This is a conversation that is very much needed.

29 Nov 2022102: Nicholas Jemetta: Career advice from The Fancy Dress Dad00:48:45

Send us a text

Pitching yourself for a new job is never easy.
Pitching yourself when you live with anxiety, is harder.
What's even harder?
Pitching yourself to the BBC when you have a stutter. Or doing multiple professional speaking gigs, with that stutter.
The most courageous of all?
Dressing up in a fancy dress costume (think skeleton onesie!) and showing up to a work meeting on Zoom. And then again as Darth Vader. Then again as Minnie Mouse.

Why on earth would anyone do that?? Listen to the episode to find out.

For my next guest, I want you to google the term ‘fancy dress dad’. Do it!

Nicholas Jemetta is a Product Coach and Mental Health speaker and has worked at some of the top retailers in the UK, British Telecom, Ricoh, Reed and others. In June 2021, Nick decided  to go out and start his own consultancy.

Send us a text

My guest today is a Finance Firebrand, and Private Capital Advisor Sunaina Sinha, who is now at Raymond James, a global financial services leader whose total client assets are over $1.1 trillion. There are so many reasons for bringing Sunaina to the show. Even though Sunaina received her education at HBS and Stanford, her career has been anything but linear, something we love to see on the podcast ; there are so few women in this space; and so few women who look like me, especially who were not born in the countries they live and work in.

In this conversation, Sunaina shares the following:

- How a scattered childhood in Africa and South East Asia that was often difficult at times, made her the person she is today
-What helped her application to stand out at Stanford and HBS
- Why she moved from Industrial to Chemical Engineering and then to Finance
- How Sunaina secured her first job post MBA at Bridgewater
- What her first boss said to her and how she never forgot those words
- What made her start her own company and how she got hired by her first few paid clients
- The reality of running her own business while being a mom to 3 kids and breastfeeding throughout those early years
- How her company grew and caught the eye of Raymond James, and what it's been like to go from employee to founder to employee
- Her greatest superpower, and you might be surprised with her answer
..and so much more

07 Feb 2023108. Dr Pal: How a Heart Attack changed his Life and Career00:58:36

Send us a text

My guest today is a Dr Pal, one of California’s leading experts in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology. There are 3 reasons I wanted to bring the good doctor on the show.
Number one is it’s pretty cool to have a doctor on the show, second, are some startling facts: 13% of the world is obese, 39% of the world’s adults are overweight, 1 in 5 children are overweight, and we need to learn more about this, and Dr Pal has his own personal journey. Thirdly, Dr Pal, (full name Dr Palaniappan Manickam) is a content creator, with 800k followers across Youtube and Instagram! (I counted 600k during the time of recording and it just keeps growing!). Dr Pal makes useful videos using his charateristic humour and the theme is always ‘making yourself a priority’ so that you don’t need to hire doctors like him,  ever.

We talk about the following:

- How the Indian steretype of having a doctor or engineer in the family was very much alive in his family and community growing up

- The journey to study medicine in India and then eventually in the US, with all of the pitfalls in between

- The obesity epidemic, the causes and some timeless pieces of advice for maintaining good health, coming from the doctor's own experience

-  The accidental start of Dr Pal's content creation journey: how it started and how it's going

Send us a text

My guest today is Deepa Purushothaman who worked at Deloitte for over 20 years and was the first Indian American woman and one of the youngest to make partner. While that is impressive in and of itself, that is not the only reason Deepa is on the show. Deepa wrote this on LinkedIn a couple of years ago: I left my 22 year old job and felt like I was jumping off the cliff of uncertainty during COVID, to write and launch a business. It felt scary, uncertain, and even a little frivolous at the time. Less than a year later, Deepa released her best-selling book ‘The First, The Few, The Only, How Women of Color Can Redefine Power in Corporate America’, and this is a conversation that we can ALL weigh in on, not just women or a certain race, we have a lot to learn from Deepa’s experience and work.

We cover a lot in this conversation:
-Deepa's journey to making partner,
-How there are so many Indian origin CEO's in the US but not near as many Indian women
-What 'work on your executive presence' meant as feedback for her
... and much more.

My guest today is one of Asia Pacific’s 50 most influential and purposeful marketers. Sapna Chadha is VP Marketing at Google (at the time of this recording), based in Singapore and runs its consumer and business products in 12 geographies in India, Southeast Asia and South Asia. Sapna’s name is Indian and she looks Indian, but had never ever lived in India before moving with Amex. Today we are going to talk all things Google, YouTube, Marketing, being expatriated.

We talk about:
- How Sapna decided to take the less trodden path at Kellogg during her MBA
- Those 10 years at Amex with all the highs and lows
- How Sapna got hired at Google and how (a form of divine) timing made a big difference to actually getting into the company
- What life was like living in India as someone who looks Indian but never lived in the country
- What are some of the top traits Sapna looks for when recruiting for team members at Google
- Biases she has experienced repeatedly as a working mom and practical steps she is taking to change that for herself and everyone around her
- And so much more.

- We talk about what it was like being in the police force in Ireland for the better part of two decades,

- How he got hired by the Canadian Olympic Committee, and what being an Olympic champion is actually like once the pomp and show is over

- What Niall has noticed to be the biggest trait most elite athletes have in common, and how us non-elite folks learn from them, especially during tough moments in our careers like layoffs and rejections

Today’s episode is part of my series ‘Where are they now’ to check up on how some of my past guests are getting on and how sometimes the best laid plans can go differently.

- Being at the receiving end of ageism, racism and sexism
- How to detext any potential red flags during the final rounds of job interviews
- How therapy and meditation are tools in Jon's toolbox to build more resilience
.. and so much more

08 May 2023114. Jason Feifer: Learn how to Build for Tomorrow, with Editor-in-Chief at Entrepreneur Magazine00:51:26

Send us a text

My guest today is Jason Feifer. Jason is the opposite of a one trick pony. He’s a multi-hyphenate: Editor-in-Chief of Entrepreneur magazine, podcast host, book author, keynote speaker, startup advisor, and my personal favourite: non-stop optimism machine. In this episode, we are going to learn about Jason’s journey to, I know this is going to sound cliché and click-bait-y… embracing change. Because as much as we all know it’s important to understand and accept change, not a lot of us like it, let alone thrive in change. Fret not, Jason is here to show us how.

We cover a LOT during this conversation, such as:

- Jason's career pre-Entrepreneur Media. In fact, we talk about his study choices during college and whether it was obvious to him from an early age that he was meant to be a journalist.

- How Jason pitched dozens of magazines and how one landed at Washington Post

- Jason's time at small and large media houses: Men’s Health, Fast Company, Maxim Magazine etc. and whether there's one position that massively influenced how he shows up in the world today

- Of course, we talk about about Entrepreneur magazine. What was the company like back in 2015? How did Jason get hired there and what helped him get from Executive Editor to Editor in Chief in a very short time (one year)?

- I geek out with Jason on a couple of chapters of his book to simplify the takeaways for you, whether you want to grow your career or company, or both.

- Jason has met with and interviewed so many famous people Jason: Ryan Reynolds, Gary Vaynerchuk, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jimmy Fallon, etc. Which interview went surprisingly different from what he expected and what did he learn from the experience?

 - Jason's advice for someone who's in a career transition and how to best make the most of the situation, while being practical and aware of the day to day needs.

26 Jun 2023116. Niraj Kapur: Sales, Marriage, Divorce, Depression, Finding Happiness again & Everything in Between00:52:09

Send us a text

My guest today is Niraj Kapur. Niraj is many things. An award-winning executive, Niraj has worked in corporate London for 23 years. From small businesses to a national newspaper to FTSE 100 companies, he's experienced it all and shares his insight, knowledge, big wins and horrible failures. A sales trainer, TedX Speaker, LinkedIn Top Voice, book author of 3 books including ‘Everybody works in Sales’.

These are reasons enough to invite Niraj to the show, but I personally find Niraj to be one of the most transparent people who posts consistently on LinkedIn: the good, bad, ugly, all of it. It feels like we’re going along the roller coaster together and this is rare, especially on LinkedIn with all of the fronts people put on to get business. We have a lot to learn from Niraj’s journey .

In this episode, Niraj shares how his family emigrated from India in the early 1950's to London and eventually reached Northern Ireland.
We also talk about Niraj's stellar 25 year career in Sales, which started after his original plan to be a rock star didn't exactly pan out.

This is a deeply intimate conversation, and I'm grateful to Niraj for sharing so openly with us. There's lots of storytelling, laughs, romance, sadness and ...well... real life stuff. Niraj leaves nothing out. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

31 Aug 2023119. Robert Baker: What it was like to be at Mercer for 42 years, and how that evolved to Male Allyship & DEI Consulting00:43:44

Send us a text

My guest today is Robert Baker. Robert spent 42 years at Mercer Consulting, where he held senior roles leading Investment Consulting and Client Relationships across geographies and businesses, and also leading DEI for the international regions, before DEI was really as mainstream as it is today. So, what does Robert do after a rich 42 year career? He starts his ‘next stage’ portfolio career, using his power and privilege for good, and set up his own consulting firm, helping businesses, ecome more diverse and inclusive, especially training and coaching male leaders on how they can show up better for women and all genders at the workplace.

In this episode, we talk about how Robert started at Mercer, how he navigated change, internal networks and politics during this long tenure and his advise to someone who in today’s world is told that they need to keep moving externally to continue to grow

We also talk about Robert's company Potentia Talent Consulting and the mission behind it, what made him start, how he got signed on by his first few clients, and whether he misses being in corporate.

We cover a fair amout on how to shattering stereotypes and biases, and how doing this helps all genders, men included.

Let’s say there’s a woman listening today and thinking, I’m in a company where they talk a pretty talk, but walking the talk is a far cry. What would Robert recommend this woman do, and how can men show up better at work? The answer pleasantly surprised me!

12 Sep 2023120: Shweta Aggarwal: How a Computer Science Engineer moved from India to Japan & UK & became an Anti-Colourism activist00:53:58

Send us a text

To introduce my guest, I’m going to steal some rather uncomfortable, inconvenient facts from her new book. For hundreds of years, Asians, especially Indians, have believed that if you are fair, light skinned, it means that you are superior. That’s right – white supremacy doesn’t just exist among white people. Sadly, this is still the case even in modern, ‘liberated’ India. Global sales of skin lightening products are expected to cross $8.9 billion by 2024, according to the World Economic Forum.

Ever since the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 following the brutal murder of George Floyd, my guest found herself sharing innumerable stories with her husband and kids about her painful past. Ever wondered what persistent bullying will do to a 6 year old in the long term? Ask a 45 year old. Ask Shweta Aggarwal.

Shweta is an anti-colourism activist with a colourful life. A computer science engineer by trade, her passion is dance and writing. Shweta grew up in India and Japan, and has lived in the UK for almost 25 years. We have a lot to unpack with Shweta, and talk about things like how skin-tone bias affects racial equality at work and also, all things career pivots.

30 Jan 2024125. Karin Hurt: From leaving golden handcuffs at Verizon to writing a blog that became a leadership training firm with clients like Adobe, Microsoft, Nestle!01:02:08

Send us a text

We’ve had lots of guests on the show who quit their job, were called to a higher purpose, set their eyes on entrepreneurship and never looked back.

One thing we don’t often see is the mess that goes on behind the scenes. Karin Hurt’s story is one that deserves to be told, because Karin is no ordinary former 9 to 5’er who started her own training firm. Karin left a very well-paying job at Verizon after 20 years, and left a tonne of money on the table, so much so everyone around her told her she was crazy. Karin then started a training firm called ‘Let’s Grow Leaders’ with her husband David, and have together helped 10,000 leaders in 14 countries with their human centric approach to increase innovation and productivity without burning out.

Karin shares the trajectory of her career in great detail — from her unique academic journey to her unexpected leap into corporate roles, and finally her decision to pursue her own venture. Karin also sheds light on the concept of human-centered leadership, her encounters with workplace conflict, and her commitment to a communicative approach in dealing with these conflicts.

The episode tells a story of how an individual's passion for their work can lead to extraordinary success and the transformation of one's career path. It emphasizes the pivotal role that mentors play in recognizing this passion and the essential need for confidence and humility in leadership. We end with Karin giving advice on how to deal with organizational conflict, using her research as a reference.

15 Feb 2024126. Suneel Gupta: He will help you find that spark again, yes, really, just like he did for himself01:17:07

Send us a text

My guest today was once seen as the “face of failure” in the New York Times, so if there’s one thing he understands really well, it’s that the road to success is not always smooth. Suneel Gupta learned from his mistakes and went on to found RISE, a breakthrough wellness company recently bought by Amazon. Suneel is now a successful author and host of a docu series called ‘Business Class’. I loved his first book Backable which is about how to get buy-in from others to move your ideas forward, and his new book called Everyday Dharma has a very relevant premise: our job is the #1 predictor of our mental health. And yet, most of us seem miserable with what we do. Dharma is a timeless answer to the emptiness we feel — and a process for bringing joy back into our life and work.

Brace yourself for an inspiring and insightful episode as speak with this trailblazing entrepreneur and author. Picture this - the ups and downs of working at huge tech companies, an unexpected summer camp transformation, applying basketball recruitment strategies to a business, and the birth of a wellness company that caught Amazon's eye.

The conversation journeys into what it means to turn passion and ambition into your life's work. It involves a 'Game of Now' approach and discovering what truly sets your soul on fire. Oh, and did I mention, he'll also spill secrets on how to go from messy notes to a beautifully written book?
Intrigued much?
Unmissable episode!

13 Apr 2024128. Where are they now? Neil Bearden on Burnt Boats, Blowguns, Business & Moving back to USA after 14 years in Singapore01:05:40

Send us a text

Today’s episode is part of my series ‘Where are they now’ to check up on how some of my past guests are getting on and how sometimes the best laid plans can go differently.

Neil Bearden was a guest on the show back in Nov 2020 on episode 4  titled ‘The True Power of your story’ and if you haven’t listented to it yet, I highly recommend you do, because it is the most downloaded episode. Neil shared his unusual career story that led him to become a tenured professor at one of the world’s leading business schools and then simultaneously starting his own company. Since then, he left that tenured role, moved continents from living in Singapore to building a house in the woods in North Carolina and going full in with his business. And today we’re going to talk about how this journey has been.

In this episode, among many cool things, we talk about:

- 2021 and taking that proverbial leap. As a former professor of Decision Sciences, how did Neil make that decision. Rational, pro con list, or with gut and feeling?

 - State of Neil's business. Did clients come beating down his door and threw their credit card at him? Expectation vs reality

 - Who is Neil's client niche and his favourite kind of clients? How does he know they’re going to be successful?

 - How does Neil get noticed?

Catch my past episode with Neil here.

29 Nov 2024137: John Tarnoff: From Hollywood Film Producer to Career Reinvention Advocate, Embracing Resilience, Creativity, Aging and the Power of Relationships01:00:11

Send us a text

Could a Hollywood talent agent and film producer teach you how to navigate your career with resilience and creativity? That's exactly what John Tarnoff, our guest for this episode, has been doing after an impressive 50-year stint in the film industry. Hear firsthand how John, who contributed to iconic movies like "The Power of One" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," draws from his experiences to help others successfully transition through various career stages. From securing early roles to redefining oneself in later years, this conversation promises to shed light on turning job losses into opportunities for growth and learning.

Imagine leaving a secure career path only to face unexpected challenges. That's a reality I once navigated, stepping away from entertainment to pursue a tech startup, only to confront a major crash. Through networking and an open mind, I found new opportunities at DreamWorks Animation. This episode emphasizes the power of relationships and adaptability over traditional job applications, especially in mid-career stages. Through stories of transformation and serendipity, we highlight how self-discovery can lead you to your dream role, even when the path seems uncertain.

We also tackle some of today’s most pressing job market challenges, like ageism and navigating online job searches. Is the "Open to Work" banner on LinkedIn a proactive step or a misunderstood shortcut? Together with John, we discuss how to handle such perceptions and biases. By exploring the Japanese concept of ikigai, John offers a framework for aligning passion and profession, encouraging you to view career reinvention through a lens of intention and community support. Don’t miss his valuable resources and insights that can kickstart your own career transition journey.

Send us a text

In 2011, India won the Cricket World Cup after a long wait of 28 years.  11 players made 1.3 billion people rejoice.  My next guest was the Strength and Fitness coach of this team.

What a dream job to have!

Ramji Srinivisan is a Strength & Conditioning Coach who has trained the who’s who in the sports world:
-the world’s best cricket players like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli,
-Narain Kartikeyan in the Super Formula Grand Prix in Japan

Given the pandemic last year decimated the fitness industry by closure of gyms, it has also led to an increased interest in personal fitness and wellbeing, which could very well see a major revival and exponential growth of careers in this sector in 2021. The rise of fitness at home through companies like Peloton, Gymshark & Echelon is just one indicator of the growing demand.

Consequently, these days Ramji is in very high demand, so I was excited for him to come to the podcast and share with us his career journey.

In this conversation, Ramji shares:

- How he made a career pivot at the age of 29 under challenging personal circumstances
- How he open up a fitness center and got his first client: a famous tennis player
- How he got hired as the strength and fitness of the Indian cricket team
- How he trained this team to win the Cricket World Cup in 2011

15 Mar 202123. Jeff Archambault: It's a small world, after all00:45:57

Send us a text

Which is the dream company you always wanted to work for?

Many people say these two: Apple and Disney.

Jeff Archambault has worked with both of these iconic companies. A short stint at Apple, followed by a long and illustrious 25 year career at the Walt Disney Company, where he served in leadership roles in Finance, Operations, Corporate Communications and CSR.

Drawing on all his hard earned lessons from the corporate world, he has reinvented himself as an Executive Coach, a Lecturer and a Mentor to startups. He is busier than ever. Which made it extremely hard to get hold of him for this podcast!

Jeff is a strong believer in the power of networks, relationships and in taking a 'global' view of your career. After all, its a small world - just like the name of every child's all-time favorite ride in Disneyland.

In this episode we talk with Jeff about:

- How armed with a Stanford MBA he pivoted from Wall Street to Disney, via Silicon Valley
- His expat experiences as an American moving to Paris to work in Apple and then Disneyland
- Dealing with hostile worker unions in France
- Reinventing himself as a lecturer, coach and startup mentor after a 40 year corporate career
- Dollops of his best advice for ambitious career professionals

21 Mar 202124. Dirk De Muynck: From Saving Reputations to Saving Lives00:47:06

Send us a text

This is probably one of the most unique career stories you would have ever heard.

Dirk De Muynck had it all: a cushy executive job at a large Swedish automotive giant, a comfortable life and wide acclaim as a manager of reputation. Till one day in 2014 when it was all taken away from him and Dirk had to re-invent himself.

One day, in the midst of a traffic jam, Dirk had an epiphany that not only changed his life, but the lives of hundreds of people in Belgium.

He moved from being a savior of reputations, to a savior of lives.

Dirk runs CoolXpress, a medical transport company, that uses motorcycles to  transport medical tissue, liquids and pharma products to hospitals. He and his team often race against time on Belgium’s hyper-congested highways to get donor body organs to operating rooms across the country.

In this special episode, Dirk talks about:
 - How a hand-written letter he sent started his career at Volvo in the 1990's
 - A bizarre interview with his future boss which didn't exactly go as he expected
 - How he handled the painful separation from Volvo after nearly two decades there
 - How he returned to an old, forgotten hobby that drove him, literally, towards his eureka moment
- How he pitched his business idea dozens of times facing rejection after rejection, until he saw success with one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations – the Red Cross

This is a very special episode which teaches us that we can reinvent ourselves at any time in our life. Don’t miss it!

'Carpe Diem' is a famous Latin phrase roughly translating as 'Sieze the Day!'

Our next guest embodies this spirit and how!

What is it like to work out of a boat? Not on holiday, not for fun, but as your new permanent office? Are you ready to 'Seas the day'?

I invite you to google search the following:

a. Digital Nomad

I can bet you, the images that come up are of 20 something's on a beach with Ray Bans and a drink. Am I right?

The last person you would imagine leading a digitally nomadic life is a CEO with 25 years of senior corporate experience.

In his corporate career, Abel Staveren has held CFO and CEO positions in the shipping industry with postings in London, Singapore, Norway, Switzerland and Luxembourg

Now, Abel and his wife Adrienne travel full-time as digital nomads. They divide the year into three or four blocks, spending each block in a different country. In 2020, Q1 was spent in Stellenbosch South Africa, Q2 in Singapore, Q3 sailing their boat back from Scotland to the Netherlands and Q4 in Algarve, Portugal. They just arrived back from Portugal and are getting the boat ready to go sailing around the UK.

In this fascinating episode, Abel shares:

> The highly unusual circumstances in which he was hired at his first job

> What prompted him to stop traditional work where he needed to be physically present, and become a digital nomad - the answer will surprise you

> How he got hired by his first paying client

> His favourite career advice, which he learnt from the creator of the most famous syndicated daily comic strip in the world

15 May 202132. Stefano Di Lollo: How to Redesign your Career00:40:59

Send us a text

I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good reinvention story.
Especially career reinvention.

Think of the most famous people in the world, and they've reinvented themselves.
And ordinary people like you and me? Yes, us too.

But to go from industrial design, to creative strategy, to innovation, to teaching college students, to now helping leaders be the leader they want to be...

How do you even start?
How do you deal with that fear?
And can social media help or hinder?

To talk about all of this and more, I'm delighted to have Stefano Di Lollo on the podcast.

In this episode, Stefano shares the exact steps he took to leave a safe, well paying career in industrial design and the journey he took to the Leadership Coach and Facilitator path he enjoys today.

Follow Stefano on here on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram.
