Shannon Raska is a third generation houndsman from the state of Texas. His grandfather and father were both members of the South Texas Wold Hunters Association. Shannon is still raising, training and hunting the same family line of coyote hounds that was started in the late 1930s. Chris travelled to Texas and hunted with Shannon and this podcast was recorded in the field in the middle of what Shannon refers to as “Live Action” and it sure was. At several points Chris and Shannon pause to listen to hounds and hope to catch video of the Texas wolf stretching the legs of these young hounds. Shannon’s hounds consist of mainly Running Walkers with touch of July mixed in. Chris and Shannon discuss his family’s philosophy on breeding, what his goals are for his breeding program and how Texas hunting has changed in his fifty year hunting career. Shannon runs in and outstiside of the pens and discusses the benefits and problems with doing both. Shannon Raska is an old school Houndsman at heart but is perceptive enough to understand how to take advantage of modern technology and how to continue to enjoy his lifestyle in a changing world.

In this episode of the Houndsman XP podcast, the boys renew a longtime friendship with Louisiana’s Mike Cauley, best known for the successful exploits of his Bayou Cajun Plott Hound pack on wild hogs and on bears, both the blacks of the Northwoods of the US and Canada and the giant browns of Sweden. Cauley primarily hunts hogs in the swamps and bayous of southeastern Louisiana where he has caught hundreds of the species over the years. He has also made three trips to Sweden to hunt the country’s huge brown bears after shipping several Plott Hounds to hunters there. One of the bears taken with Cauley-bred Plotts ranks fourth among Sweden’s largest trophy bears. Cauley’s experiences hunting brown bears in Sweden are thoroughly examined. Discussions move to questions about why he chose hogs as his game of choice and why he chose the Plott breed over other breeds of hounds. An in-depth discussion evolves concerning the bulldog’s role in hunting hogs, what makes a good catch dog and how hounds and bulldogs are trained to work together. Cauley’s favorite bloodlines of bulldogs and curs used for catching dangerous wild boars are also explored. Our hosts implore Cauley to describe the typical Deep South hog hunt with dogs, the type of territory he hunts and the type of equipment he uses on the hunt. Cauley also discusses the advantages and the pitfalls of using the same dogs on hogs and bears. Realizing many of the hogs Cauley catches are taken alive, additional questions emerge about how hogs are caught and what are the risks to hunter and hound. Albeit, adversarial, it is a relationship that is steeped in mystery, misunderstanding and at times; outright hatred. It is a relationship that also comes with a long history and tradition. For way too long it has been widely accepted that the Houndsman’s job is to outsmart the game warden and the game warden feels it his job to outsmart the Houndsman. An ignorant game that needs to be resolved. Seth goes to work in this episode to pry some of those tales from Chris. Being a Houndsman and a game warden Chris lays out some entertaining stories about his professional encounters with hunters and also talks about his frustrations in dealing with an ignorant bureaucratic machine known as government. This episode is filled with tones of laughs but also touches on the serious topic of how houndsmen can gain ground and earn respect from other hunters and policy makers. Hershel House, legendary craftsman, built traditional flintlock rifles using the old methods and raw materials. There has never been a more well known builder or one who has accumulated such a large group of acolytes. When Chris heard that Mark Dufresne was attending a rifle building school in Woodbury, KY, he loaded up and drove to one of his most favorite places east of the Mississippi. There were a couple of things that urged Chris to make the three hour trip to Woodbury. Houndsmen have had their futures and breeding programs altered, changed the way they hunt, changed areas they hunt, even moved their families to new areas of the country hundreds of miles away all because of the wolf. The Foundation For Wildlife Management (f4wm) is a group that is taking on the weaponized, politicized and mischaracterized issue of the invasion and impact of the Canadian Grey Wolf in the Northern Rocky Mountain Region. Justin Webb is the CEO for the f4wm. Justin saw the impact the wolf was making on native wildlife populations, how it was affecting recreation opportunities and destroying hunting opportunities in areas that were once teeming with wildlife. He was not willing accept that. He recognized that the wolf is a project that is weaponized by the anti hunting community, a political hot potato and was being forced down the throat of every hunter. His efforts have created an organization that has taken the issue straight on. The f4wm has worked with many sporting organizations and wildlife managers to put aggressive management plans in place that has reduced wolf numbers by over 1600 wolves and paid out over $1 million in reimbursement to hunters and trappers taking wolves. Gorham, growing up on a southern California ranch was in his words, “a cowboy in a surfer school.” Being a guy that has always met danger head on, Shorty has been a natural at fighting 1,700-pound tornados in bull flesh, major event after thrilling major bull riding event. Learning that Shorty was also an accomplished houndsman, Chris and Steve, with an introduction by Carnivore TV producer and former Houndsman XP guest Gary Roberson, seized the opportunity to go to Texas to hunt with and to interview Shorty Gorham, a major win for the Houndsman XP audience. Noted for his big-winning Treeing Walkers at major coonhound shows, Currens is a strong proponent of dual-purpose hounds that hunt as good as they look. Growing up on a central Kentucky dairy farm, Currens developed a skill set for showing livestock early on with his family’s registered Jersey cattle. Always taking pride in the animals he presented, the transition to coonhound showing and winning big while doing so, was an easy transition. In this interview Chris and Steve cover myriad subjects with Currens including coon hunting as a boy on the Kentucky River, attending early competition hunts, meeting and hunting with many of coon hunting’s most famous personalities, John Monroe, Elmer Harrod and Billy Stinson to name a few, and his involvement in building foundations of popular strains of Treeing Walkers that endure today. Aggression, man made or genetic? Can you recognize aggressive behavior? Why does your hound growl? Have you put your hound in a situation that may manifest itself into full blown fight mode? Heath Hyatt joins Chris for this in depth discussion about dog behavior and how it effects houndsmen.
