26 Jan 2024EP 360: Have Things Really Changed?01:02:00

Today Robin Powel joins Jason to talk about uncharted territory, “West Coast Cat Dogs”, and more.  This episode covers a lot of ground from track style/desired traits to being smarter than the average bear and a lot more. Just like most conversations when you get a couple of dogmen together the two took the liberty to take run down a few rabbit holes but they led to some pretty good conversation.

09 Sep 2024Gone To The Dogs at Autumn Oaks01:31:31

In this the first of the 2024 Autumn Oaks recordings, Steve is joined by Texan Sid Underwood and by Land of Lincoln coon hunter Doug Crawley.  The conversations were recorded live in media center of the Kuhlman Center, headquarters for the Event Where History Is Made.

Underwood had the distinction of being the last Bench Show Judge to judge Autumn Oaks in its entirety as a single judge.  The event now employs two judges and as many rings in the three-day event.   The old friends discuss many aspects of Autumn Oaks, of coon hunting in the State of Texas and their association as co-employees of the Field Operations Department of UKC when Steve was there.

Crawley set a milestone in the UKC World Coonhound Championship that can never be replicated.  His Treeing Walker Coonhound Crawley’s Louise became the first-ever female hound to win the UKC World Nite Hunt Championship.  Louise accomplished the feat in 1989, thirty-five years ago.  Steve and Doug take a nostalgic trip back to Montgomery City, Missouri, then headquarters of John and Linda Wick’s Wick Outdoor Works supply business, including accounts of the hunt that took place in the midst of a hurricane.

04 Mar 2022EP 128: Season End with the Double U Team01:12:21

We have a full house again on this episode as Jess, Shannon and Olivia join Buddy and Jason to recap the hunting season.  To start the trainwrecks, Jason recaps getting the DU Dodge stuck, and more importantly unstuck with a recovery system that would make MacGyver proud. Buddy had a goal to take our staff on a cat hunt for some hands on and real-life experience in the life of a Houndsman. Between busted sleds, boulder patches, and the “ghost cat” that Buddy has gotten to know quite well over the last 3 years, I’d say they got a pretty accurate representation of the life.

14 Aug 2023EP 316: Gone To The Dogs With Gary Knapp01:20:29

Steve and Gary became acquainted through their legislative activities and the mutual love for the Plott breed and have had many conversations over the years.  Gary is a humorist with a gift for telling stories from his native West Virginia, many centered on hunting with hounds and jam-packed with local color.

Knapp provided material for Steve’s monthly columns in American Cooner magazine under the heading “Mule Tales.”  Gary was given the nickname Mule as a result of his strength and work ethic when a younger man.  This one is seasoned with mountain flavor like smoked pork sausage or country ham.   Get yourself a biscuit and pass the blackberry jam.  We’re about to share country word-vittles, Gary Knapp-style.

04 Nov 2022EP 231: On The Road Again, With Kids00:20:58

Jason loaded up the kids to head out and support the Oregon United Sporting Dog at the Oregon state championship field trial this summer.  His oldest boys Colin and Connor have been dying to be on a podcast of their own, and today they get their chance! The boys really bailed dad out when other podcasting plans didn’t quite pan out, so if you like random talk of bigfoot, dogs, road trips and monster boar coons give them a listen.

Since Jason headed out for the Grand American hunt, were pulling one of our fan favorites out of the vault.  Jason, Buddy and James talk about silent vs open dogs and the pros/cons involved with tight mouth dogs , playing through the pain and share a few good laughs.  This episode sparked some really good conversations when it launched and we hope it makes everyone ask themselves some questions the second time around.

07 Oct 2024Gone To The Dogs- Houndsmen and the Appalachian Flood00:55:16

Jones describes first hand what it’s like to see entire towns, bridges and highways swept away with no warning.  This frank conversation exposes the insensitivities of those outside the region and the shear hopelessness felt by citizens of the region, many of them hound people themselves.

Jones describes the devastation and recounts the terrible tragedy as a fellow coon and bear hunter on a rescue mission with his boat is swept under a bridge and has not been seen.  It’s not the average feel-good episode but it does reveal the importance of living each day as if it is the last.

I felt it important to do this podcast at this particular time if for no other reason than to bring help and comfort to those that are so badly in need.  Jones emphasizes the importance of looking to those nearby that may need our help and doing what we can for them first.  It’s a sobering episode but one that we all need to hear at this very difficult time.

26 Sep 2022Ep 216: Gone To The Dogs with Kesten Jessee01:17:24

Steve sits down with a young man whom he believes to be the hardest hunter, for his age, of all the coon hunters he has met over his seventy years of following hounds.  If it gets dark at close of day Kesten Jessee will be out there with his hounds.  The amazing thing about this 28-year-old hunter is he is largely self-taught and his hounds are too. His success story revolves around his current hound Clyde, obtained as a four-month-old pup and trained with no help from other dogs, nor from released coons nor other popular methods.  The dog has never had an e-collar on his neck and at fifteen months old, has treed more than one hundred coons in an area where coons are particularly scarce.

Without letting the coon out of the crib, so to speak, let’s give a listen to an interesting interview with purist Kesten Jessee, coon hunter and dog trainer extraordinaire!   This one is for those of you that are attempting to do it yourself.

30 Oct 2023EP 337: Gone To The Dogs - Road Trip Part Two – Randy Smith01:11:53

Smith joins the boys at his Lone Pine Kennels guest quarters where the trio participate in a laidback conversation about family, friends and of course, those world-famous Lone Pine Treeing Walkers.

Smith’s “Lone Pine” resume reads like the win record for Kentucky’s Calumet Farms or, to keep it local, the six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.   Smith’s hounds had a breakout year in money-hunt competition in 2023, with Lone Pine Lady and Lone Pine Bella respectively, winning a truck and a first-place finish worth $100 grand.   Both occupy prominent spots in the conversation.

This is a coon hunter’s episode with all the elements that push the hot buttons of hunters of all persuasions; pleasure hunting, competition and breeding to name a few.  With coon seasons in full swing and autumn woods ablaze, you can’t get much closer to our favorite sport at our favorite time of year than with this conversation.  It’s a plumb good’ un!

30 Jan 2023EP 260: Gone To The Dogs Story Hour01:09:04

Audible books, for many, are replacing hardcopy for many reasons but mainly for convenience.  Hunters particularly enjoy the ability to listen while logging windshield time to and from the hunt.  Testing the waters so to speak, Steve has chosen to read an essay from his book titled Time Travel.  The piece spotlights Steve’s physical journey to the land of 1950’s author and self-proclaimed “perfect” hunter/houndsman Samuel J. Hunnicutt who wrote the cherished Twenty Years Hunting and Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains.  Steve read the book in the 1950s and it remains one of his favorites.

Additionally, Steve visits by phone with octogenarian coon hunter Fred Moran the Redbone Man to catch up on the night-hunting exploits of one of the sport’s oldest and most active hunters.  The visit is vintage Moran with hunting stories and humor to burn.

07 Apr 2025GTTD with the Kentucky Sporting Dog Alliance00:57:57
Kentucky has long been noted as the cradle of coon hunting as we know it today. The famed Walker family, noted for their namesake the Walker foxhound which was the forerunner of today’s Treeing Walker, the most popular of all coonhound breeds, lived in Kentucky. In this episode Steve recalls the first licensed hunt in which he participated took place at a coon hunting club in Kentucky. Considered by many to be the Kentucky Derby of coon hunting competitions, the massive PKC World Hunt was held in the western Kentucky town of Aurora for many years. Our guest Billy Carter joins Steve in remembering their great experiences hunting there and throughout the Bluegrass State. Upon learning of the formation of the new Kentucky Sporting Dog Alliance, Steve contacted former podcast guest Billy Carter to learn the skinny on the new group. It’s all here in this episode including the purpose and goals of the association, its plans to bring Kentucky sporting dog owners of every stripe under one tent and divulges the organization’s plans for statewide competitions involving monetary awards, all for the purpose of bringing hunters together. Everybody needs somebody and hunting dog enthusiasts nationwide need to realize and practice the adage “there’s strength in numbers.” We need to come together if our sport is to survive and thrive. 30 Aug 2021Training Talk: Managing Expectations00:31:01

We have all heard the stories of, or owned a standout young dog.  Some show great amounts of promise at an early age, and at times that can skew our view/mindset and create expectations.  The guys talk about recognizing these types of pups and the added pressure a great prospect puts on a Houndsman.  Remembering that they are still pups can be a challenge when they are an outstanding prospect, how do we manage our expectations?

02 Sep 2024Gone To The Dogs with Coon Hunting Legend Glen Young01:06:09

Steve recently spent an hour with Glen, with the promise of much more to come, to discuss his upbringing in rural Arkansas, his hunts with Deep River Mike, Merchant’s Banjo II (whom he remembers as the best competition dog of his experience) and a long list of hounds coonhound historians will recall.   Despite his age, his mind is still as sharp as an Old Timer coon skinner and his vast knowledge of the coon hunting game will inform and entertain lovers of the tree dog as no other.   You truly won't want to miss this one!

06 Jul 2022EP 181: Born 100 Years too Late, Dale Lee 1400:58:06

Today's episode starts of with some of Dales work on a biological survey in the depths of winter.  To add to the challenges, Dale had to do this one without the aid of his horses.  We also learn that even the Lee dogs had a train-wreck here and there, so Dale gives us some hope for trash dogs.  One could say this hunt had its share of hiccups but as usual it makes for a great story. Dale's humor shows through while he tries to pull the wool over his brother’s eyes, but a keen ear ruins his fun.

31 Oct 2022EP 229: Gone To The Dogs with Duel Murphy01:19:27

This episode features a young hunter, both in years and in the number of years he has been involved in the sport.  Like many young hunters, the lure of competition has been at the center of his involvement and he is known to be very successful at it.

Duell Murphy of Huntington, Ind., is a major player on the major stage of competition coon hunting.Hunting dogs for Heather Island’s Ike Rainey, his earnings and those of the hounds he has handled have reached six figures and beyond.

In this entertaining hour and a half, Steve talks to Murphy about his job with Heather Island, his early beginnings in the sport, the tragedy of losing a favorite hound and the near-death experience on a Texas highway that nearly ended, not only his career, but his life.

This is one for the listener that watches the amazing changes in the world of coonhound competition, including astronomical entry fees and purses and wonders what it’s like to experience it all from the inside.

16 May 2022EP 159: Gone to the Dogs with JR Gray01:36:48

In 2018, Kentuckian J.R. Gray made coon hunting headlines by winning, in the short span of two weeks, coonhound world championships in two registries, UKC and AKC.  GRNITECH, two-time World Champion Rack Em Willy became one of the most recognized hound in the sport overnight.  Winning one world championship in a lifetime of coon hunting is something most coon hunters never realize.  Winning two in that span of time is unthinkable.

J.R. Gray, at 27 years of age, has compiled quite a coon hunting resume with his hounds.  Prior to winning two world championships, Willy made the All- Grand Top 16 at Autumn Oaks and was named the UKC Male Performance Hound of the Year, both in 2017.  Willy is also a PKC Platinum Champion having earned more than $20 thousand in that registry’s events.

As if Willy’s accomplishments weren’t enough, Gray finds himself basking in the limelight of one of today’s most prestigious wins, the UKC Tournament of Champions with a son of Rack Em Willy called Grand Nite Champion Gray’s Conor McGregor.  Conor captured the coveted first place win and a check in the amount of $50 thousand at the second annual UKC Tournament of Champions in Greencastle, Ind., in April.

Steve catches up with J.R. to discuss his amazing career with Willy and Connor in this timely and extremely interesting episode. Listeners may be surprised at the perspective this young man has on the sport as he reveals what the sport means to him.  This is a good one for the young hunter and seasoned veteran alike.

09 Oct 2023EP 331: Gone To The Dogs with Morris Hardy01:03:49

Morris Hardy, who just had his 79th birthday, is a Mississippi Delta coon hunter that is part of the annual group Steve joins each year at the White River National Wildlife Refuge the week after Thanksgiving.   Steve isn’t sure that they keep Hardy around more for his culinary skills or his stories but the consensus is that hunting camp could never be the same without him.   He’s an interesting guy.

Steve and Morris share an hour or more of coon hunting conversation that covers Morris’ beginnings, the friendships he’s made over the years and some of his favorite hounds.Morris is known at camp for his crossbred hounds but confesses that his hunting buddy “Mississippi” Randy Smith has convinced him to return to his roots with a new Black and Tan.   You’ll get the full story, including a short geography lesson about northern Mississippi and some of its most famous personalities.

25 Mar 2022EP 137:A Trail Less Traveled with Garrett Fry00:45:39

This week Jason got to catch up with longtime friend and fellow Houndsman Garrett Fry while at the Elk Creek field trial.  Some would say Garret is truly living the American dream, us included!  From leading 35 horse pack trains into the most remote, rugged, and beautiful country in the US, to picking a 6 string, Garrett is carrying on in the ways of the great hunters of the past. Garrett is no stranger to hounds, curs, and terriers.  In this episode he tells tales of using his Trapline Dogs, hunting coyotes for the government with use of his family’s Decoy Dogs, Grizzly Bear encounters and more.  His cowboy lifestyle has led him down the path less traveled, but the stories, memories and friendships made along the way are a testament to a dying breed of man.  So saddle up, settle in and enjoy the ride.

31 Mar 2025Gone To The Dogs with Billy Bell01:37:12
In this episode Steve talks with successful competition handler Billy Bell of Tennessee. Steve met Billy in 1998 when he joined the PKC organization as its Senior Vice President. Billy and his brother Avery were actively competing in PKC events and doing their share of winning at a time when entry fees and subsequent payouts were much smaller than they are today. Bell, has amassed nearly a half million dollars in handler earnings and continues to be a major force in today’s fast-paced competition game. The boys discuss several top hounds that Bell has handled including Carolina Peach, The Wicked Speed Shifter, Late Round Rock, Spice Girl, Cash Flow and others. Bell’s excellent recall of the hunts and hounds from his long list of experiences makes interesting conversation for competition junkies and novices alike. The episode finishes with Steve encouraging Billy to share his views on staying in top shape, physically and spiritually. It’s an episode that lives up to the show’s motto; dog talk at its finest! 24 Jan 2022EP 111: Gone to the Dogs with Elijah Burnett01:15:59

Elijah Burnett, at age 26, epitomizes the fledgling hound or tree dog enthusiast of today.Motivated,  intrigued and thirsty for all the knowledge he can garner to enhance his experience, he also is uniquely possessed of the one quality many in his age group seem to find the hardest to grasp, the patience to let the training work.   Since the inception of Gone To The Dogs Podcast, the goal has been to communicate with the Elijahs of our sport,  in the ways you will hear in this enjoyable episode.    Like the prophet of old who was taken to Heaven in a fiery chariot only to bring miracles and help to those in trouble, it will be the modern-day Elijahs that will preserve, promote and protect our sport for present and future generations.   To the future and beyond!

04 Nov 2024Gone To The Dogs with Lone Pine Kennels01:12:11

In this episode, Steve records with Randy Smith of the famed Lone Pine Kennels in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, renown producers of world class Treeing Walkers  Steve recently spent seven nights hunting with Randy.   Randy’s son Troy and video and podcast content producer Clayton Stark of Stark Outdoors joined Steve and Randy on some of the hunts.

In what could also be described as “A Trip To The Lone Pine Museum” Steve questions Randy about several of the photos and paintings found hanging in the guest quarters and the answers are a walk through the annals of Lone Pine history.

This episode is the next best thing to driving to western Pennsylvania and hunting with the Lone Pine hounds in person.  Enjoy.

19 Dec 2022EP 246: Gone To The Dogs The Phrogger Phenomenon01:13:09

The subject of the day is the phenomenal popularity of Burchell Davis’ Rosedale Phrogger, a four-year-old Treeing Walker with an impressive competition resume and a mouth that’s drawing coon hunters to the hound like mosquitos to a good dose of bug dope.   The impressive part of the Phrogger story is the hound’s habit, on a consistent basis, of passing his coon-treeing ability and his indescribably loud and unique mouth on to his pups through what Steve calls the Phrogger Phenomenon.

Each of the boys have some degree of experience with Davis’ Rosedale Phrogger or his offspring.Stark is hunting a 10-month-old pup for Davis and Kesten is starting a four-month-old Phrogger/Lone Pine-bred pup that he and Steve co-own.  In each case, the boys come away being more than impressed with the results.Phrogger is on center stage on this one and it’s a story that can only be labeled as phenomenal, told by guys that have nothing to gain in the telling.

Closing the podcast, Steve and Ella share the mike to extend warm Christmas wishes and lasting gratitude to Gone To The Dogs listeners everywhere.

22 Jul 2022EP 188: Beaver Ponds, Porkies and Bears with Elijah Keller01:06:34

Today Elijah takes time away from his training season to talk some dogs.  Elijah has been around hounds from an early age.  But when the bear hunting bug sunk its teeth into him, it was game over.  As soon as Elijah could drive, he chased the passion of bear hunting that can simply not be explained to its full glory.  “If you know, you know”, but if you have not yet experienced a bear hunt over hounds Elijah does a pretty good job painting a picture.  And if you’re a trainwreck fan, this episode has got your fix with plenty to spare.

18 Nov 2024Gone To The Dogs with Robbie Spears01:26:00

This episode takes the listener to eastern Kentucky, land of our host’s roots and home of our guest Robbie Spears.

Spears is a coon hunting game warden with the rank of Lieutenant in the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, a coon hunting Mr. Green Jeans.

Robbie and Steve enjoy a conversation about their Kentucky roots, about Robbie’s lifelong desire to work outdoors, and spend a great deal of the episode talking about some successful English Coonhounds, his breed of choice.

Spears has done his share of winning in competition, placing sixth in the UKC World Championship and winning the Purina Outstanding Nite Hunt Coonhound race overall.

A good deal of the conversation centers upon the importance of passing the tree dog sports on to the kids, of which Robbie has two.  His outlook is interesting may present views the average houndsman has not considered before.

And by the way, the coon hunter whose name Steve could not remember in the episode was Irvin Sutton, owner and handler of Dark Shadow Bobbie, a remarkable English coonhound in her day.

This one is worth you time.

24 Feb 2025Gone To The Dogs With Al Metcalf01:23:50

Steve lands the interview with one of his most-highly sought-after guests in this episode.  Al Metcalf of Barnesville, Georgia is a tree dog enthusiast like no other.  His transformation from a 32-year veteran of the Georgia Highway Patrol to what can only be described as the renaissance man of tree dog enthusiasts, Medcalf is a throwback to a time when men hunted for food and the tree dog was essential to their survival.   Medcalf’s mantra “If it climbs, it’s not trash” and his waste-not-want-not attitude toward tree game reveal the soul of a real hunter and woodsman, the kind rarely seen today.  Medcalf hunts a mixed bag of Plotts, Mountain Curs and Plott/Cur crosses, with little concern for popular breeds or bloodlines and proves, when the record button turns red, to be a storyteller par excellence.   You’re going to love this episode.

Bear and Nick talk a bit on beagles, bassets, and deer (not in the order). They also talk about the shrinking hunting opportunities around the US, and how it affects the average working class Houndsman. They also discuss crazy hounds that think they are Rambo at 5 months, and how Nick can tell his basset hound is getting tired by the tracks he leaves in the sand. It’s been a while since the two caught up, and that always makes for a great conversation. So Kick back and enjoy some good laughs along with some serious conversation.

08 Jul 2020EP9: Brett Fraser, Lynx Bear and Lion Hunting In BC01:03:10

Brett Fraser gives us a look into hunting Lynx in British Colombia Canada as well as the habitat, hunting conditions and the hounds involved.  Buddy and Brett also discuss one of the unexpected hazards of hunting in BC.... Log Trucks!  We found it really interesting to hear Lynx hunting in the frigged north compared to dry ground Lion hunting in the Southwest, but when Brett dives into the traits that are necessary for a hound to succeed in his pack,  you can really see the similarity's.   What do you think?

05 Aug 2024EP 455: GONE TO THE DOGS -WHO’S RESPONSIBLE?01:27:03

The boys engage in the usual “dog talk at its finest” in the opening minutes of the episode before cracking the lid on a can of mayhem and confusion centered on the age old “just who gives you the right” challenge.  Triggered somewhat by comments on recent social media, Corey opens a discussion about who gets to decide what quality is in a given breed of hounds?  And, beyond that, who has the authority to call the shots when it comes to breeding quality dogs?   Does simply owning a great dog make the owner the be-all, end-all authority on the breed?   Opinions in this episode are flying like starlings in the wind, the opinions no more authoritative than the flapping of wings yet no less passionate.

This is a lively discussion that’s bound to stir a reaction or two within every houndsman, color and conformation preferences aside.

20 Dec 2021EP 98: Gone to the Dogs with Keith Durkee01:27:34

Steve has spent at least four Decembers at the White River Refuge hunting camp with the featured guest of this episode.  The two hunting buddies take a break from the camp’s routine of eating, sleeping, hunting, and yarn-stretching to record an episode chronicling the life of one of coon hunting’s most unique figures, retired Army veteran Keith Durkee.  As the resident Yankee in a camp full of southern rednecks, Durkee gives as much as he takes when the North vs. South ribbing starts.  Keith has coon hunted all across the nation and is a veteran competition hunter.  He won the prestigious AKC World Championship with a Treeing Walker hound of his own breeding.  The depth of his hound knowledge is legion and his insight into the way the competition game works is educational.  You’ll enjoy the story that begins on an island off the coast of Maine, moves to the Pacific northwest and settles in the piney woods of central Alabama. You’ll learn what a “yad” is and come away with the feeling that interpreting the English language may not always be as easy as it seems.  With the December Arkansas sun peeping through the bunkhouse window, Durkee and Fielder get down to the nitty-gritty of why they follow the hounds of the night, and will put a craving on the listener to put it all into motion when the sun goes down.

The conversations span a wide category of subjects that will be worth your time.  Listen to one at a time or enjoy them all in one setting.  Either way, you’ll enjoy this visit to one of the coon hunting game’s most enjoyable events.

Special guests Jim Garrison, Morris Hardy and Nubbin Moore provide insight into what it means to reach the golden years in a sport many have enjoyed all their lives.  Garrison shares his own experience at age 72 in addition to the life of longtime friend Warren Wilson who lived and hunted to the age of 97.  Morris Hardy, a lifelong coon hunter and English fancier shares what keeps him going several nights a week at the age of 78.  Steve’s traveling buddy Nubbin Moore, who just celebrated his 82nd birthday, shares his views on whether or not he’s too old to quit. This is an episode for all coon hunters and hound people.  Humorous at times, the guests show the spirit that has kept them at it longer than most and reminds us, that if we keep at it long enough, we each will face the decision one day.

20 Mar 2023EP 275: Gone To The Dogs For Survival01:33:42

In this episode Steve takes the opportunity to discuss legislation and legislative issues that affect hound people across the nation and particularly in Utah and Michigan.

Guests include Corey Huntsman, President of the Utah Houndsman Association an Mike Thorman, Legislative Director for the Michigan Hunting Dog Federation.

Huntsman discusses the immediately pending threat of Utah HB469 that if signed into law, will decimate the cougar population in favor of protecting mule deer numbers.  Increased seasons and lax regulation may leave the state’s houndsmen and women out in the cold when it comes to running their hounds.

Steve calls upon veteran hunting dog defender Thorman for strategies and tactics to help hound people build strong offence and defense in the ever going battle to save our hounds.

Every one that runs a hound, no matter the game pursued, needs to be active and aware.  If nothing more, listen to this podcast and use the information to encourage friends that actually want to do something to protect, preserve, and promote hound hunting now and for future generations

18 Apr 2022EP 147: Gone To The Dogs with Ed Zorn and Kenneth Tulles01:20:02

In this episode Steve visits with Deep East Texas coon hunters Ed Zorn and Kenneth Tulles.Kenneth, a former rodeo cowboy and Army veteran, attributes his love for coon hunting, and a world of experience he’s gained, to his association with octogenarian Ed Zorn. At age 88 years, Ed was born in the small town of Cloverleaf, about twenty miles from Houston. He still actively feeds, in Kenneth’s words, his blue dog addiction by coon hunting. Both Zorn and Tulles hunt Blueticks.

It is veteran hunters like Ed Zorn whom Steve tries to seek out as potential guests, believing they hold a wealth of knowledge and information that will benefit anyone within the sport that cares to listen to their experiences. Our guest this week fits the mold perfectly. Listen as Ed tells how his coon hunting habit broke him of chasing girls, ruined his love life and launched him into a lifetime of enjoying hounds. Particularly enjoyable are his and Kenneth’s stories of hunts with Stagger Lee, a Bluetick of questionable parentage, suspect registration and devastating physical disadvantage that Zorn describes as being bad to the bone.

This is a look back over time as Steve examines the life of a man that has enjoyed coon hunting for more years than many coon hunters of today can claim or imagine. You will like this one.

19 May 2021EP 56: Doug McMann with The Hunting Hound01:24:48

Doug McMann is a guide, hunter, houndsman, and fisherman. He lives in British Columbia where he runs Skinner Creek Hunts. Doug sat down with Bear and started talking. He has some amazing stories from an unorthodox start in hounds to tangling with wolves in the bush of British Columbia. Doug is a fascinating guy, and his dogs reflect that.
Buckle up and enjoy!

23 Jan 2023EP 257: Gone To The Dogs with Jim Meeks at the Grand American01:22:22

Jim Meeks was, at his peak, known as one of the hardest hunters in the sport of raccoon hunting. He is most noted for his association with the Yadkin River strain of Treeing Walkers.  He takes no credit for naming the strain but no man has hunted and promoted more of the famous dogs from the line.  Hounds like Yadkin River Tom, Jeff, Champ, Chico, and Tar Rattler lace his conversations like rawhide on a well-worn pair of Irish Setters.  Jim Meeks and Yadkin River Walkers are forever intertwined.

Jim and Steve have been sharing conversations around the barns at the Grand American for over forty years.  This episode is but the latest collection of coonhound-related chatter that flows when the two get together.  Readers have enjoyed Jim’s writing in coonhound magazines through the decades as well.  Never claiming to be a competition hunter, his Just Coon Hunting columns are ripe with some of the most entertaining stories to be found.  Coon hunters wet behind the ears and long in the tooth alike will enjoy this episode recorded live at the largest annual gathering of coon hunters in the nation, the incomparable Grand American.

12 Dec 2022EP 244: Gone To The Dogs with the Good, Bad and Ugly01:26:03

The conversation involves coon hunting and has just enough canine nutrition and puppy rearing to quality the effort as time well spent.  Some listeners require useful information in their choices of podcasts.  For most, the conversation will qualify as an hour and half of typical dog talk by three guys with a combined history of 180 years of following hounds and a passion that has only grown stronger through the years.  When you’ve gone to the dogs, it doesn’t matter how long it’s been.  What really matters is that you enjoyed the trip.

02 Feb 2022EP 115: Born 100 Years Too Late, Dale Lee Pt. 301:01:03

In today’s tales, Dale talks about his trip to Oregon in pursuit of Mt. Lion. Houndsmen of the past had hurdles that we wouldn’t even think of.  Would you ship your dogs halfway across the country by train? Dale tells the story of why he couldn’t be on that train with his dogs, hunting the Pacific Northwest, and how serious he takes breakfast.  One could say the man got a little "hangry". Like what you hear?Make sure to check out more from Dale Lee, Brett Vaughn and the rest of the DU Supply Hound Podcast contributors.
