In this episode, I answer a student question about a horse that resists circling on line. My answer includes a specific exercise, as well as some important psychological nuances about how to do the exercise. It’s not just about ‘getting the horse to circle’ it’s about figuring out how to cause the horse to understand and be motivated to join the circle.

31 May 2024EP 193: Best Of HTIH: Complicating Half Halts00:42:54

This episode re-introduces a popular episode from the archives about the famous (infamous) half halt. The half halt is an important concept in dressage - AND it’s a term I actually rarely use. I get a lot of questions about it, and anyone who has studied dressage or has taken dressage lessons has been asked to do a half halt. If you’ve ever been confused about what a half halt is or how to do it, keep on listening to this original episode on half halts.

21 Oct 2022EP114: Yoga with Cathy Woods00:52:15

Cathy Woods, creator of Body, Mind, Equine (TM), and author of Yoga for Riders; is a pioneer in combining yoga, mindfulness, and horsemanship to improve horsemanship from ground to saddle through the use of yoga postures and principles; supporting mindfulness in horsemanship and supporting equestrian wellness. In this podcast, I talk to her about what it means to create your own personal practice and how it can create more unity between you and your horse.

About the Guest:

Cathy Woods is the creator of Body, Mind, Equine (TM)

and author of Yoga for Riders; a long-time Yoga Teacher/Retreat Leader, horsewoman, and avid, backcountry trail rider. She leads retreats and clinics around the country at ranches, expos, and equine centers and has an online course series through WeHorse.

Cathy has been leading yoga programs to horse lovers and non-equestrians for nearly thirty-two years. Her Yoga and Equine programs teach the parallels between yoga and horsemanship. Body, Mind, Equine is not about doing yoga on the back of a horse, but rather how to use yoga principles (not just postures) to improve horsemanship from ground to saddle and become a more aware, mindful equestrian.

In addition, Cathy also teaches good stretches for riders. Combining her passions of yoga, horses, and travel, her one-of-a-kind programs have reached national acclaim, Woods has written for and been featured in numerous online and print publications such as Horse & Rider Magazine, Horse Illustrated, Equus, Cowgirl Magazine, Western Horse & Gun Magazine, EQAMerica, StreamhorseTV, Yoga Digest, Forbes.com, Equitrekking, Flying Changes Magazine, and others.

Woods aims to impart an aware/mindful approach to yoga and horsemanship in order to make enhanced horsemanship and true yoga accessible to everyone while promoting a more enriched and skillful life.

She is based in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina but teaches nationally. Find out more at www.cathywoodsyoga.com

09 Jul 2021EP049: Ask Karen Anything00:43:03

What to do when your horse says: ‘I don’t like that’...

In this episode I answer a question about a horse who doesn’t like going into the barn at the facility they board at. She wants to know how to handle it when her horse shows her he doesn’t like something. This is something we all have experienced at one point or another and I love that this question is being asked… It shows a respect for the horse’s feelings. I’ll talk about the need to recognize dislike vs fear, and some choices we have in addressing this.

30 Aug 2020EP004: Stop Trying To Get Your Horse On The (Bleeping) Bit00:37:01

Karen explains why the phrase: ‘Get your horse on the bit’ is a less than ideal way to teach riders to create the desired posture we are looking for in dressage. She’ll explain an alternative way of helping students create a healthy posture that focuses on balance, communication, and partnership. You’ll learn the three criteria Karen uses to help students and horses find their Working Gaits, as well as the three most important conversations you need to be able to have with your horse to effect his posture.

This episode will give any dressage rider a fresh perspective on how to ride in connection with the reins.

11 Feb 2022EP078: How Does Karen Do It?00:49:23

Ever wonder how busy people get everything done? I have 7 horses, run a business that serves people around the world, and have time to enjoy life and my husband. In this episode I am joined again by productivity expert, Dr Sarah Reiff-Hekking, but this time Sarah interviews me to discuss the strategies and tools I use that help me live a life I can enjoy, while still being highly productive. This will be interesting for if you want to master your time in any area of your life, or simply want to be more efficient when doing your horses.

About the Guest:

Dr. Sarah Reiff-Hekking empowers entrepreneurs and professionals to really understand how they spend their time, so they can gain the clarity and skills to get to the next level in their business and life.

She believes there are no “perfect” time management systems — you have to find the system that works for you.

Dr. Reiff-Hekking received her Ph. D. from SUNY at Stony Brook in 1997, and Coach Certification from MentorCoach. She was on the facility at UMass Medical School for 6 years. She founded True Focus Coaching in 2005 and, as a business-savvy entrepreneur, she grew her successful coaching practice during a down economy.

25 Nov 2022EP119: Liberty As A Lifestyle with David Lichman00:57:24

I invited 5-Star Master Parelli Professional, Liberty expert, and friend David Lichman to the pod to talk about what he calls: Liberty as a lifestyle. This episode will give you a lot to think about when it comes to your daily life in partnership with your horses and will tempt you to think about who you need to be for your horse to want to be with you.

About the Guest:

David Lichman is a 5-Star Master Parelli Professional with a specialty in Liberty Horses. He has performed across the continent with his three-horse act, which includes bridle-less riding and riding to music. He is the creator of Liberty Outside the Round Pen, a Parelli Mastery Series release, available for streaming and on DVD, in which David gives step-by-step instructions on building a connection that resists distractions, enabling students to play at Liberty with exuberance in large open areas.

David teaches all over the world, helping students find a better relationship with their horses on the ground and riding.

His training philosophy can be summed up in this simple quote:

“I don’t see them as horses, I see them as friends. They have names, desires and needs – as do I. Friends help fulfill each other’s needs and desires.”

31 Jan 2021EP026: Buck Tradition. Be More YOU!00:49:00

In this episode, I talk about the importance of being YOU! So many students miss a deeper relationship with their horse or miss important moments in their training because they are paralyzed by a fear of ‘doing it wrong’. Many trainers and instructors are getting burned out because they are trying to fit in a professional mold, instead of fully embracing the full value of what they have to offer.

This podcast will free you to be yourself by explaining how important it is. I’ll also present 2 powerful questions to ask yourself that will help you be more you and boldly take the actions you want to take!
