10 Nov 2021 | Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 'Once More, With Feeling' (2001) feat. Josh Tonks | 02:16:01
Give us something to sing about! In celebration of the 20th anniversary of one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's greatest episodes, we're revisiting the 2001 musical episode 'Once More, With Feeling' (S06E07) along with guest and musical theatre expert Joshua Tonks.
Buffy is an important text for women and queer viewers who see themselves represented in the Scooby gang’s Chosen family and Buffy’s strength. And while Joss Whedon is a POS (yes, we know!), we’re highlighting the work of everyone who stepped up IN SEASON SIX to make TV’s best musical episode.
Following a Buffy primer for the uninitiated, we go into a detailed production history about how this Very Special Episode got made. Then it’s a song by song break-down, complete with Karaoke renditions.
Plus: how the writing fails Dawn, praise for Tony winner Hinton Battle, a fun new way to troll Trace, Josh’s walks us through musical subgenres and the importance of the show’s lesbian relationship (and unsubtle ode to cunninlingus).

06 Nov 2019 | Interview With The Vampire (1994) | 01:39:51
With the start of November's cold weather, Trace and Joe head south to Mississippi to visit our favorite bickering gay couple: Louis and Lestat and their ADORABLE adopted daughter, Claudia. That's right, we're back in vampire territory as we tackle Neil Jordan's infamous adaptation of the iconic first novel in Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles just in time for its 25th anniversary!
This movie is super duper gay (for 1994). The boys ponder the film's weird development cycle, including bizarre casting decisions (Julian Sands? Cher?!), question whether Rice ruffled studio feathers and lament Pitt's snooze-inducing performance. Joe and Trace bat heads over Cruise, but both are head over heels for Kirsten Dunst, which inspires a lengthy diatribe about her lack of recognition!
Also up for discussion: Trace's dislike of long hair on men, the "Britishness" of Stephen Rea, prostitute tits, Letterboxd reviews of the Theatre des Vampires, and the real reason that Louis is so appealing (a HUGE dick).

12 Aug 2020 | Island of Death (1976) | 01:36:07
Vacation Month continues with a trip to beautiful - and exceedingly queer - Mykonos and Nico Mastorakis' notorious exploitation/video nasty film, Island of Death. This is the Stefon of horror films because it has EVERYTHING: bestiality, incest, targeted homophobic violence, misogyny, rape and so much more (please pay attention to the content warning!)
After the film's lengthy production history and categorization in the UK's notorious list of video nasties (thanks for the background info, Anya Stanley!), we compare our readings of the film. Trace says it's merely shock value while Joe argues it's a comedy about religious hypocrisy (Mastorakis himself would say it's nothing more than an opportunity to make money!)
Plus: comparisons to Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, Haneke, and Last House on the Left; Trace's forgetful history with onscreen bestiality; and logistical advice for water sports. Finally, we make a special request for Greek listeners: is your name Nico and did you work on this film?

01 Jul 2024 | Micro Queers: Birder (2023) | 00:43:01
Burn your clothes and seek consent because we're talking about director Nate Dushku's sophomore feature, Birder (2023). Spoilers: we strongly recommend this one.
Think American Stranger by the Lake, complete with full frontal nudity and dangerous sex. But there's also plenty of dark comedy here, as well as sex positivity and diverse representation.
Plus: Michael Emery's amazing lead performance, a twisty in media res beginning, snapping turtles, and an ending that raises the film a whole half star.

23 Apr 2025 | Alien Resurrection (1997) | 02:34:34
Caress your Newborn and take a deep breath because we're discussing Jean-Pierre Jeunet's divisive franchise entry Alien Resurrection (1997).
Join us as we attempt to offer a reappraisal of this weird little film, which certainly has its flaws but also has so much going for it. Be it Sigourney Weaver's magnetic performance as Ripley 8 (you'll hear no "not my Ripley" cries from us) or the ooey gooey practical effects, we still like this one!
Plus: Xenomorph nail polish, breathalyzer door locks, that underwater sequence, a monologuing Brad Dourif and the hazards of regularly eating lemon slices.

12 Jun 2019 | Final Destination (2000) feat. Terry Mesnard | 01:34:20
Our Summer of Franchises begins by knocking on Death's door with the 2000 pseudo-slasher Final Destination! Joined by Gayly Dreadful's Terry Mesnard, the boys look at the film that boasts a queer screenwriter (Jeffrey Reddick) and several gruesome Rube Goldberg-y deaths (and one surprise bus attack).
Join them as they debate the ridiculousness of the name "Clear Rivers," the fact that the FBI agents are the worst and why straight guys like to poop together (seriously, why is this movie so poop-obsessed?).
Is a queer screenwriter not queer enough for you? Never fear! Joe has you covered with his theory about Carter's repressed homosexuality. Plus, his secret dislike for Jaws comes out!
Weekly Game: the boys try to come up with their own convoluted deaths.

05 Aug 2020 | The Descent (2005) | 01:41:37
Pack your climbing gear because we're headed to the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina to go caving with the ladies (er....chicks with picks) of Neil Marshall's 2005 masterpiece The Descent on its 15th anniversary! How is a movie this scary when the monsters don't even appear until an hour into the film?
Join us as we....um....descend into a discussion of why Juno (Natalie Mendoza) is a compelling character in spite of all of her mistakes (thanks, Joe!). We'll also investigate the potential queerness of Beth (Alex Reid) and Holly (Nora-Jane Noone) and choose between the UK and US endings of the film (spoiler alert: it's an easy choice). Also does The Descent feature the most tense scene in cinema history?
Plus, an educational TED talk about the differences between claustrophobia and cleithrophobia. Why can't Trace stop bringing up the atrocious 2009 sequel? What is a dealbreaker movie and why do both of us consider The Descent to be one? And how do you give a lemon an orgasm?

18 Aug 2021 | The Fly (1986) feat. Meagan Navarro | 01:59:17
Check the windows in your teleportation pod because we're heading up to Toronto to discuss all the gooey goodness in David Cronenberg's seminal horror remake The Fly! Joining us is Bloody Disgusting's lead critic (and co-host of The Bloody Disgusting Podcast): Meagan Navarro!
Join us as we trace the film's journey from page to screen (rewrites, Mel Brooks, tragedy and Total Recall) before discussing the film's possible AIDS allegory and, of course, all the praise for the film's outstanding and Oscar-winning special effects.
Plus, respect for the film's handling of abortion (in 1986, no less) normalizing the cock and references to Zenon: The Zequel and Cube 2: Hypercube. Hey, it wouldn't be a Cronenberg discussion if it wasn't weird!

28 Jun 2023 | The Hitcher (1986) | 01:30:21
Our mothers told us never to do this but we just couldn't resist so we're having an in-depth discussion of Robert Harmon's 1986 classic The Hitcher. Join us as we discuss the gay panic of it all in this queer-coded cautionary tale. From Rutger Hauer's predatory queer to C. Thomas Howell's virginal twink, The Hitcher has it all!
Plus: the film's origins as a 190-page(???) script, lots and lots of saliva play, ferryman/fairy man and getting your car all kinds of wet.

18 Mar 2020 | The Ranger (2018) feat. Annie Rose Malamet | 01:41:43
In their attempt at social distancing, the boys abandon the city and head deep into the woods. Along for the ride is Girls, Guts & Giallo's Annie Rose Malamet, who schools the boys on all things punk (and Lisa Frank) so that they can understand the annoying teens in Jenn Wexler's The Ranger.
Are you ready for two films in one? On one hand, we've got an 80s slasher throwback featuring punks vs authoritarians. On the other hand, we've got a (secret?) rape/revenge with lead character Chelsea (Chloë Levine) potentially being abused by her uncle (veteran director Larry Fessenden) or the titular Ranger...or both.
Up for discussion: what drug are these kids doing? What's up with the wolf symbolism? Why does the film's pacing suffer when the kills begin? And why doesn't the film lean harder into punk?
Finally: Trace opens up about an unsettling encounter tied to the film that initiates a frank discussion about film festival reviews, as well as the relationship between directors, critics and the production of art.

23 Jun 2021 | Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954) | 01:44:24
Pray you didn't forget your bug spray, because we're heading deep into the Amazon to hang with our favorite queer villain the Gill-Man in Jack Arnold's contribution to the Universal monsters: Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954)!
Join us as we do an in-depth production history of this classic film before going on a brief tour of what it was like to be queer in the '50s (hint: it wasn't fun!). We'll then analyze the obviously queer relationship between Mark (Richard Denning) and David (Richard Carlson) while giving a queer reading to the Gill-Man himself.
Plus, a rundown of the many cancelled remakes, ass-squeezing swimsuits, underwater facials with creamy white goo and did Anaconda just completely rip off this movie (we have the receipts!)?

Let's derange the world because the profile doesn't fit the profile, which means that we're covering Barbet Schroeder's 2002 film Murder By Numbers. Tagging in for this lively conversation are Patrick and Gena of the Kill By Kill podcast.

Plus: one very random baboon attack, absinthe etiquette, Claire Redfield's jacket, showy psychos, curtain bangs and a mind-bogglingly huge $50 million budget.

28 Apr 2021 | The Forsaken (2001) feat. Paul Etheredge | 01:48:03
Protect your wallets from suspicious drifters because we're ending April with a boring, unsexy vampire road trip movie: J.S. Cardone'sThe Forsaken! Joining us for this torturous venture is Hellbent director Paul Etheredge!
Join us as we try to determine whether the film is unintentionally homoerotic or just plain bro-y. We'll delve into Simon Rex's '90s porn career, discuss some of our own porn preferences and discuss the heavy vampirism-as-AIDS metaphor the film incorporates.
A discussion of The Forsaken can't be had without discussing kinda-sorta lead actress Izabella Miko and how the film mishandles her character. She's nude in her introductory scene, has maybe five lines of dialogue and isn't given a name until the end credits. Yay, feminism!
Plus, title card titties, Johnathon Schaech giving a performance, new (terrible) vampire lore, waitresses who are really concerned about the coffee bill and just how many times can these characters run out of gas? Spoiler alert: a lot.

19 Jul 2023 | Psycho (1960) | 02:37:50
After tackling its two sequels, we're finally crossing off a classic with Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960).
Turns out we have a ton to say in this supersized episode, which makes sense considering the film is technically masterful, features iconic sequences and boasts two stellar lead performances.
Plus: a 'pregnant' production history, Baters and momism, Gus Van Sant's 1998 shot for shot remake, and a variety of (queer) readings of Norman Bates.

Celebrate the holidays with one final Micro Queers as we check in on prolific Aussie filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay's latest, Carnage for Christmas (2024).
We really enjoy watching Mackay develop as a filmmaker, though the film could benefit from a few less characters and storylines. Still, Carnage for Christmas has a unique killer mask, some great gore, and one badass lead protagonist in podcaster Lola.

Join us as we say hello to a cameo-ing David Cronenberg before traveling 4.55 centuries into the future to board the vessel Grendel. While aboard, we will lament the outlawing of hockey in 2024, ponder the "Microsoft Conflict" and cheer on Janessa (Melyssa Ade) as she earns some sextra credit by employing some some super tame nipple play.
Also, why is UberJason only in the last 14 minutes of this 87-minute movie? Why are the sets of this $11 million-budgeted movie derivative of the 1999 Disney Channel Original movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century? Did Harry Manfredini rip off John Williams' Raiders of the Lost Ark score for his "Birth of the UberJason" track? And will Trace find yet another way to bring up The Lizzie McGuire Movie? (The answer is yes.)
But hey, it's not all bad! There's still that super clever VR sequence in the third act, Lisa Ryder's delightfully kooky android KM-14 and a truly awesome kill involving liquid nitrogen and a scantily clad scientist's head (seriously, why are all of these female scientists baring their stomachs?).

30 Sep 2020 | The Vampire Lovers (1970) feat. Mary Beth McAndrews | 01:47:18
On this week's episode, we're making our first foray into Hammer Horror with a journey to 19th century Styria in Roy Ward Baker's The Vampire Lovers. Joining us for the discussion is Scarred for Life co-host Mary Beth McAndrews, who brings her own passion for vampires to the episode.
After a brief crash course on Hammer Horror, we'll laud the performances of Ingrid Pitt as the thrice-named anti-heroic vampire Marcilla/Carmilla/Mircalla, marvel at the unusual vampire lore (shrouds?!), and lament the lack of any interesting male characters (though that is undoubtedly the point).
Plus, Mary Beth leads us in a frank discussion of bisexuality and the vampire sub-genre's relationship to it, which isn't too shocking considering this film is sexy af.

10 Feb 2021 | My Bloody Valentine (1981) | 01:35:01
Just in time for Singles Awareness Day, we're losing our hearts to the 1981 Canadian slasher, My Bloody Valentine...or at least Joe is. Trace is more lukewarm on the George Mihalka film, which suffers from an uninspired villain reveal and too many characters.
We discuss the size (and deliciousness?) of hearts, why TJ's narrative is important for small town Nova Scotians, the cost of dirtying up a mine and Joe's strange personal connection to one of the film's actors.
Plus: love triangles, the film's censorship woes, Scream Factory gore and Scooby Doo antics. Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!

25 Mar 2020 | Vamp (1986) feat. Cecil Baldwin | 01:58:43
We're heading over to New York City (or is it Los Angeles?) to party it up with a vampiric Grace Jones in Richard Wenk's 1986 comedy horror film Vamp! Riding shotgun is Cecil Baldwin, the narrator of Welcome to Night Vale!
Join us as Cecil educates us on the goings-on of 1980s New York City, which is not actually filled with green and magenta lighting. We finally make our way to the emptiest strip club ever: the aptly named "After Dark Club". While there, we chat with Dedee Pfeiffer (sister of Michelle) before being seduced by a Kabuki'd out Grace Jones and her hypnotic performance art striptease.
We also try to label all of the films Vamp references/inspires (Adventures in Babysitting, The Warriors, Fright Night, etc.), while commending the film for not making Gedde Watanabe's Duncan a racist stereotype (even if the movie does forget about him after the first act).
Oh, and does Trace make yet another Lizzie McGuire connection? You betcha!

Explicit Content Warning - Don't let Trace's mom listen to this!
To celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Amityville Horror, we're talking about our favorite scenes and performers in Naked Sword's 2019 porn parody Scared Stiff 2: The Amityville Whore. (And no, you don't need to have seen the first film)
Although the sex is pretty vanilla and the film is far too long (3 hours?!), we have to admit: this film is both surprisingly funny and occasionally hot.

02 Sep 2020 | Tenebrae (1982) feat. Michael Varrati | 01:38:34
On this week's episode, Joe, Trace and special returning guest Michael Varrati board a plane to Rome to discuss the pod's very first Dario Argento film, 1982 (or is it 1984?)'s Tenebrae.
This is another video nasty (see our episode on Island of Death), so it's got a convoluted production history that includes censorship and rumored on-set tension between Argento and frequent collaborator Daria Nicolodi. Tenebrae is also a surprisingly queer positive text from the master of horror, from the casual inclusion of a lesbian couple in the film's most notorious set piece to the casting of trans actress Eva Robins. It's also textbook Freudian psychosexual, right down to those red heels.
Come for Michael's impassioned defence of dubbing in Gialli, stay for Trace's love of the doberman sequence (the Helen Shivers of giallo setpieces!), then leave for Michael's terrible dad jokes.

Join them as they debate the effectiveness of the comedy in the film, admire Lupita Nyong'o's powerhouse performance and try to decipher just what the rules of The Tethered are (and why the movie doesn't seem to care about sticking to them). 22 Sep 2021 | Mulholland Drive (2001) | 01:50:47
In advance of its 20th anniversary, we're dipping into the beautiful, surreal world of David Lynch's Mulholland Drive (2001).
In keeping with the film, the episode adopts a non-linear format as we track the Betty/Rita storyline, then double back to discuss Adam, before finally digging into the extra footage Lynch shot when the project switched from TV pilot to film.
Expect plenty of discussion about how great both female leads are, which Hollywood director Adam reminds Trace of, Joe’s ongoing obsession with Showgirls, and talk of how goddamn gorgeous this film is.
Plus: Speculation on a shared cinematic universe with Southland Tales and Alias S3, Trace's dislike of Noir, and the hilarious reason why Monty Montgomery’s line delivery as the Cowboy is so unnerving.

22 May 2024 | Alien (1979) | 02:18:23
Grab Jonesy the cat and prep the explosives because we're celebrating the 45th anniversary of Ridley Scott's Alien (1979).
This film is all about reproduction and gender (roles) from Sigourney Weaver's iconic performance as Ripley to the male rape of Kane to the evolving form of the Alien.
It's also an incredible technical feat, a take-down of capitalism, and a reason why you should never trust Ian Holm when he's dissecting.

15 Sep 2021 | Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) feat. Mark O. Estes | 01:59:52
Just in time for its 30th anniversary, we're dipping back into the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise with a look at Rachel Talalay's 1991 entry, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.
Joining us to discuss his childhood favorite (and gateway into horror) is Mark O. Estes, writer and host of the Midnight Social Distortion podcast.
This film is...a lot, particularly how it balances laughs (Looney Tunes!), scares and camp. Is it paying homage to the franchise or simply doing a poor imitation of previous films?
Plus: discussion of "Final" entries in franchises, comparisons to Hellraiser: Bloodline, tangents on Paranormal Activity and Friday the 13th, films that that made us feel magical as kids, the subversion of John Doe's death and the film's treatment of sexual assault. Like we said: it's A LOT!

07 Apr 2021 | The Innocents (1961) | 01:34:14
This week on the pod, we're headed back to Bly Manor with Jack Clayton's 1961 classic, The Innocents (see also: last year's Patreon episode on The Haunting of Bly Manor). This classic Gothic Horror film is reminiscent of Diabolique, Rebecca and The Haunting and has a strong queer connection thanks to screenwriter Truman Capote, whom we discuss at length, including Trace’s hatred of Holly Golightly.
Plus: an influential 15th century picture book, Cinemascope challenges, the genesis of Austin Powers, and evil children. But the real question is whether Miss Giddens is going mad...or are there actually ghosts?

03 Jul 2019 | Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (1995) feat. Sarah-Tai Black | 01:15:43
Hello Kiddies! The Horror Queers are joined by Tales from the Crypt expert Sarah-Tai Black to discuss the booby-filled 1995 banger Demon Knight! In what may be their most tangent-filled episode yet, they not only code Billy Zane's Collector as gay and Jada Pinkett's Jeryline (a name that no character pronounces the same way) as a "soft butch" lesbian, but they also proclaim the queer icon status of the Crypt Keeper!
Trace tries to decipher the rules of the demons (they're so contradictory!). Sarah-Tai gets a Bible study lesson. And Joe is dumbfounded by Sarah-Tai's story of how Alan Cumming once bullied her at a roller rink (and a thong-clad Anna Paquin just stood there and let it happen).
Lastly, Joe cribs a lot of his supposed "knowledge" of Demon Knight from this wonderful article written by Stephanie Crawford.

Grab your leather jackets and shape up your mullet because we're celebrating our 150th episode with a seminal queer vampire text in Joel Schumacher's The Lost Boys (1987)! Joining us for the discussion is Marisa Mirabal, a co-host of the Black Magic Coven podcast!
After taking a look at the historical context of the film's release (height of the Reagan era, AIDS crisis, the Moral Majority), we'll go all-in on this time capsule of the '80s, which originated as a sort of "Goonies Go Vampire" before Schumacher stepped in and sexified everything up.
Plus, "Cry Little Sister" (a lot), vampirism as a metaphor for oral sex, Kiefer Sutherland's "dance bars," a late-in-the-episode discussion of the film's two sequels and an anecdote about how The Lost Boys tricked Trace into reading Mormon propaganda.

Since the boys got a late start to Women in Horror Month, they've decided to continue it into the first week of March! Next up is Katt Shea's under-appreciated and ahead-of-its-time film The Rage: Carrie 2.
Join Joe and Trace as they take a deep dive into the troubled production of this much-maligned sequel. Topics on the table include but are not limited to: the truly despicable teenage characters, an enormous stuffed dog, Amy Irving's completely ineffectual guidance counselor, and Mena Suvari's predilection for projects with the word "American" in the title. And yes, they do address the fact that the remains of the OG Bates High School are still there for some reason.
On a more serious note, they also discuss their experiences with bullying, narrowing them down to what they refer to as their "Carrie Moment."

08 May 2019 | Fatal Frame (2014) feat. Jenny Nulf | 01:27:30
The Horror Queers are playing their way into the world of video game adaptations with the 2014 film Fatal Frame. "What? They made a movie out of Fatal Frame????", you ask? They most certainly did! Unfortunately, it never saw a North American release. Lucky for us (and you), it's streaming for free on YouTube! Sure, it is more of an adaptation of the video game franchise's themes than its plot, but the Camera Obscura does make a cameo! Is this the best video game movie ever made? Depending on whether or not you see Pokémon: Detective Pikachu this weekend, maybe!
Joining the boys to discuss this atmospheric tale of Japanese lesbians, ghosts and cursed photograph (the "fatal frame," if you will) is Jenny Nulf, the Director of Programming for the Austin Asian American Film Festival! Her knowledge of Japanese culture and creepy ghost girls brings a necessary outside perspective to the episode.
Laugh along as Joe butchers every single name (seriously, he gets them wrong even after he's been corrected), takes a pot shot at Madonna(!) and does some sort of ga(y)mer impersonation (discussing video games isn't a good look for Joe). Plus, Trace commandeers the weekly game (invoking Joe's wrath), the group discusses the film's murky stance on lesbianism and also try to figure out why it has 17(ish) endings.

03 Mar 2021 | Scary Movie 2 (2001) feat. Ivotres Littles | 01:55:57
Get your strong hands out because we're discussing our first full-blown parody with Keenen Ivory Wayans' 2001 crude spoof Scary Movie 2! Joining us for the discussion is "The Oprah of Horror" (and Horror Movies and Beyond host) Ivotres Littles!
Join us as we look at this wackadoodle time capsule into the types of comedies we were getting in the early aughts, note the differences between parody and satire, and try (TRY) to figure out which jokes work and which works don't. But hey, all humor is subjective, right?
Plus: why Scary Movie 2 couldn't be made today, how the film and its humor have aged, its incredibly rushed production timeline and (of course) all the praise for Anna Faris and Regina Hall.

05 Jul 2024 | Micro Queers: Slay (2024) | 00:28:15
What do you get when you cross From Dusk 'Til Dawn with To Wong Foo... or Priscilla, Queen of the Desert? Apparently you get Jem Garrard's better-than-it-should-be drag queen vs vampires Tubi film, Slay (2024). Spoiler: We both highly recommend this.
This is just fun! From four great RPDR queens playing actual characters, to beloved locals, to heartfelt (but not soap box-y) messaging, it's wild how well Slay works.
Plus: Adjusting to Crystal Methyd's Bella, ride or dying for Earl and Sheila, paying out for WAP, and our hopes for a sequel.

08 Jul 2020 | May (2002) feat. Katie Rife | 01:38:23
After multiple requests, the time has finally come to crack the glass and dive deep into the sad, introverted, homicidal world of May, Lucky McKee's 2002 feature directorial debut, starring UBER talented actress Angela Bettis.
Along for the ride is The AV Club's Katie Rife, who joins the boys to dissect Anna Faris' predatory lesbian Polly, Jeremy Sisto's fuck boy Adam (and his Horror Bro short film) and poor May, who we are equally drawn to and horrified by.
Up for discussion: why Trace hates the word "gams", melons as a lesbian seduction tactic, Rian Johnson's not-so-secret obsession with the film, speculation about which character is a McKee stand-in and debate about whether we give May a pass because she's female (thanks BJ Colangelo!). Also, Katie needs to investigate her vet sister's basement for bodies.
Finally, in the spirit of the film's obsession with patching and stitching things together, please accept our apologies for the occasional echo-y sound as this episode required more editing than a Frankenstein best friend named Amy.

29 Sep 2021 | Dracula's Daughter (1936) | 01:35:29
Check your zoos for elephants that are seeing pink men because we're discussing the 1936 film (and direct sequel to 1931's Dracula) Dracula's Daughter! And boy do we have some things to say about the hetero nonsense in this movie.
First, we'll spill the tea on the film's dramatic road to production, complete with cameos from super-producer David O. Selznick, queer director James Whale and everyone's favorite Production Code Administration head: Joseph Breen!
Then we'll dive into all things queer in this underseen classic, including a third act whose sole purpose is to make the straights happy. But hey, it's not like director Lambert Hillyer didn't fit as much queerness in the film as possible (it's not even subtext, y'all).
Plus: an X-rated bow tie metaphor, personal space, Hedda Hopper(?!) and more analysis from everyone's favorite queer horror theorist: Harry M. Benshoff!

19 Feb 2020 | Martyrs (2008) | 01:32:54
You asked for it (well, at least one of you did), and so we are finally covering the listeners' choice that was selected from our 2019 Listener Survey! That's right, we're discussing Pascal Laugier's controversial 2008 film Martyrs (aka the most anti-spoiler film ever made)! Big thanks to listener Brian Conmy for helping us pull the trigger on covering this masterful and deeply upsetting film.
Major trigger warnings for anyone who has never seen Martyrs, because this film is one of the most disturbing films ever made. That's not hyperbole!
Join us as we discuss what might be the most extreme example of white privilege ever put on screen (seriously, these people are so rich that they seemingly have all the time in the world to torture young women just so they can find out what happens after we die) and assign a few different readings to the film, including a very positive queer reading that might turn a few people around on it.
We'll also try to answer questions that have followed the film since its 2008 release, including but not limited to: Is it torture porn? Is it misogynistic? Does it have a purpose? Why would someone make this endurance test of a film?
Oh! And as an added bonus, both of us secretly watched the 2015 American remake without telling the other one, so we spend a little bit of time comparing the two films (hint: the original is better).
Lastly, here are all of the articles we reference in the episode:

27 Sep 2023 | Stranger by the Lake (2013) | 02:05:18
We're wrapping up Erotic Thriller month with the gayest text of all: French writer/director Alain Guiraudie's Stranger by the Lake (2013).
This is one of Joe's favorite queer horror texts because it covers so many topics: cruising, sex and death, voyeurism, body image, gay microcosms, STIs, toxic relationship, homophobia, and gay friendships.
And that's before we tackle the unsimulated sex, discuss using condoms for blowjobs, debate the ambiguous ending(s), and cringe over pervy Eric.
Plus: finding Franck frustrating, moustache inspirations, naturalistic lighting and sound, and why Henri is our favorite character.

Along for the (motorcycle) ride is fellow Bloody Disgusting writer Meagan Navarro, who is a huge fan of the practical effects wizardry in what is arguably one of the best horror remakes ever.
This film has EVERYTHING: small character moments, subversion of expectations, and a plethora of gnarly deaths/set pieces. Plus: Trace's love of Shawnee Smith, an extended conversation on the value of a locked door, discussion of those FX and a death that Trace and Meagan can't believe Joe missed!

We're #manifesting a happy New Year's with our best influencer friend courtesy of Sophia Takal and Adam Gaines' "New Year, New You" (2018).
The all-female entry of Into The Dark is all about toxic (female) friendships and anticipates a ton of 2022 "Influencer" horror titles, particularly Sissy.
Plus: praise for Carly Chaikin, questions about Suki Waterhouse's career, debates about social media advertising and complaints of "wokeness", and sly commentary (maybe?) by Takal and Gaines about the importance of Black, queer and fat people in white women's stories.

We ask important questions like: Did Gordon actually cheat on his wife? Is Jigsaw actually a murderer? Would he be convicted in a court of law? What project management software does he use? And who shit in the toilet?
Plus, Jigsaw dioramas, sexy Billy the Puppet costumes, Trace's Cary Elwes impression and that. Fucking. Ending.

08 Apr 2020 | American Psycho (2000) feat. Eric Charmelo | 01:48:32
Grab your clear raincoat, your overnight bag and your reservation at Dorsia! The boys, along with special guest Eric Charmelo (co-creator/showrunner of The CW's Ringer and co-screenwriter of The Perfection) time travel back to the 80s to revisit Mary Harron's masterful satire of Wall Street capitalism and sociopathy just in time for its 20th anniversary.
The threesome collectively lose our memory recall (who is the star of this movie? What is the name of the film Bale and Mathis co-starred in later? What is Eric's social media handle?), but find plenty of praise for Bale, Witherspoon, the soundtrack and Harron's writing/direction. Also: debates about why certain characters survive, whether Bateman is homophobic (or just a control freak) and a book vs film comparison of the notorious threesome murder sequence.
Plus: Rabbit hole tangents about food porn, the benefits of charcoal, gunkata and why you shouldn’t use the word “asshole” during sex.

24 Jan 2024 | The Roommate (2011) feat. Ali Chappell | 02:11:29
Put on your best fedora and pull that cat out of the dryer because we're discussing Christian E. Christiansen's teeny-bopper ripoff of Single White Female, The Roommate (2011)! Tagging in for the conversation is one of the film's superfans: Ali Chappell.
Join us as we try (TRY) to figure out who thought this movie was a good idea, because nearly nothing in this shameless ripoff works. From it's incredibly stupid lead character to its complete lack of tension, it's a real misfire. God bless Leighton Meester, though, who at least tries to do something with a nothing role.
Ultimately, The Roommate feels more like a business decision than an artistic one, which is a bummer given the cast that its working with. But hey, we've still got a semi-decent shower scene and a semi-thrilling climactic battle so....there's that?

We apologize for the intelligence of our remarks, but we're delving into every gay man's worst nightmare (aging) in Albert Lewin's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945). Tagging in for the conversation is writer and filmmaker Amanda Jane Stern, who turns out to be an enormous fan of the source material!
Join us as we go all in on this adaptation of Oscar Wilde's only novel, but not before discussing the tragedy that is Wilde's life. We then discuss Hollywood's "straightening" of this very queer story, and bask in the glory of what is Angela Lansbury's third film role.

23 Sep 2020 | Showgirls (1995) feat. Nay Bever | 01:46:49
This week on the pod, we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of (decidedly NOT a horror film) Showgirls. Along for the road trip to Vegas is Attack of the Queerwolf co-host Nay Bever, who delivers both laughs and insightful commentary.
This probably isn't the episode you're expecting: sure we poke fun at the film's ridiculous elements, but we spend most of our time discussing the film's many terrible men, analyze the success of the film's satire, question who the film's intended audience is and deconstruct the implications of the controversial rape scene.
It's not all serious though. Expect talk of titties, diva worship of both Gershon and Berkley and a laugh or two about the stage production of Goddess.

Benshoff, about his definitive text, Monsters in the Closet, as well as why queer horror has exploded in recent years, iconic films from each decade and his favorite under the radar queer horror text (hint: it's an early pre-cursor to Saw?!)
FYI: The interview was done on Zoom so the audio isn't great. If you want to see the video, hit up our YouTube channel.

02 Oct 2024 | Gone Girl (2014) | 02:38:45
Check your red panty inventory and hide that bottle of Chardonnay because we're discussing David Fincher's exceptional adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestseller Gone Girl in the third week of our Anniversaries and Diva Worship theme. Be a "Cool Girl" and give us a listen!
Join us as we dig into the origins of Flynn's source novel before going all in on this 2.5-hour juggernaut of a film (and yet it flies by???). From Rosamund Pike's Oscar-nominated performance to the accusations of misogyny, there's no shortage of things to discuss in this densely plotted film.
Plus: Carrie Coon (and Missi Pyle!) worship, atrocious accent attempts, thoughts on the Outback Steakhouse, treasure hunts and world class vaginas.

06 Jan 2021 | Scream 3 (2000) | 02:36:35
The third year of the pod kicks off with our annual tradition: a Scream film! Scream 3 (2000) is arguably the least popular film in the franchise, but it's due for a critical reappraisal as we unpack all of the its challenges, including no script, an in-demand Neve Campbell, post-Columbine timing, a move to comedic Hollywood and studio interference (The Weinsteins again!)
Thankfully we have Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey's luscious hair, an ambitious - if misguided - attempt to retcon the root of all of Sid's trauma and a post #MeToo reckoning that makes the film quite prescient.
For a good time, throw in a game of toot it or boot it, Trace's confusion over the expression "Red Shirts", and a Meryl Streep blaxploitation film. Plus: how many times will we say the words Scooby Doo? Welcome to our third year!
