09 Dec 2022019. 7 Homesteading Pitfalls to Avoid in 202300:15:51

Setting yourself up for a successful homesteading journey requires some thoughtful planning. You don't have to have it all figured out but it's essential to have some guidelines to follow.

In this episode, I'll highlight some of the pitfalls to avoid when starting out your journey. Some of these pitfalls are a repeat of topics we have covered in previous episodes. Still, it's very important to have a plan of action for preventing future mistakes and to know what to do when faced with problems.

The end of the year is when many of us start to think about what we want out of the new year. We start setting goals and making resolutions. For some, it's an exciting time of year and for others, it's a stressful time of year. Whatever camp you are in, coming from a position of planning and preparing is never a bad idea.

If you're a homesteading dreamer, this is the perfect time to plan how you want to set up your homestead. All of your planning can include ways to avoid these pitfalls.

If you are a beginner homesteader you can use this list to see where your weak spots are. Are there things you can change that will improve next year?

This is a section in Homesteading for Beginners workbook by the way.

7 Homesteading Pitfalls to Avoid

  • lack of planning
  • taking on too much too quickly
  • not having a supportive community, mentor or coach
  • Not believing you are capable
  • giving up instead of pressing on or pivoting
  • lack of savings
  • lack of income

19 Apr 2024097. Homesteading for Moms: Navigating the Journey00:14:24

Today, I'm diving into a topic close to my heart: homesteading as a mom. As a homesteading coach and a mother myself, I understand the unique challenges and rewards of juggling homesteading aspirations with the responsibilities of raising children, especially little ones. Here's what I've learned and want to share with you:

- Finding Balance: Being a mom and a homesteader means constantly balancing our desire to give our children the best with the demands of tending to our homestead. It's essential to avoid overcommitting and prioritize what truly matters for our family's well-being.
- Embracing Sustainability: While homesteading offers fantastic opportunities for our kids, it's crucial to approach it sustainably. I've learned the hard way that pacing ourselves and focusing on activities that are manageable and sustainable is key to long-term success.

Building a supportive homesteading community can make all the difference. Whether it's swapping tips or lending a hand, having others who understand the journey can be invaluable. And let's not forget the importance of self-compassion. As moms, we need to forgive ourselves for mistakes, prioritize our own well-being, and set goals that align with our values and family needs. By doing so, we can create a homesteading lifestyle that enriches both our lives and those of our children.

If you are just starting your homesteading journey be sure to get the Homesteading for Beginner checklist. It's free!

27 Jun 2023056. Do You Need A Break From Social Media? Reasons Why I'm Taking a Break.00:19:13

One or two times a year, I reach the point where I know it's time for a break from social media. It's not usually because of frustration, but rather because I realize I need to find clarity and regain focus.

I'm taking a break for the entire month of July. I have deleted all of my social media apps from my phone, and the only place you'll still find me is in the Homestead Income Plan group on Facebook, accessed through my computer.

In this episode, I will share the reasons why I'm taking a break, and hopefully, you will find them helpful in deciding whether it's time for you to do the same.

I’ll still be sending out weekly emails to my email list so be sure to join my email list here:

08 Jun 2023051. 3 Tips For Finding More Time & Increasing Your Capacity For Your Homesteading Responsibilities00:16:29

These tips may seem counterintuitive because they actually take time to do but instead of being time-sucking activities they can become productivity hacks you can’t live without.

Often times we get into ruts where we think we are doing all of the necessary things to be productive but what’s really happening is we are building up stress because what we feel is overwhelming instead of productivity no matter how much we try to make ourselves believe it.

Even though it may sometimes seem like the homesteading life is immune to stress and overwhelm, it is not. There may be times in our journey we will have to step back and decide where our time is best spent.

There are ways to find more time and increase your capacity for more responsibility and I’m going to share with you 3 tips to help you find it.

23 Dec 2022021. Homesteading Couples: How To Get Your Spouse On Board Part 200:18:53

What do you do when your spouse or partner is not on board with your homesteading dreams? This is something I hear people struggling with all the time. One spouse is all into the idea of homesteading and the other has big reservations or is very against the idea.

Recently, I coach a member of the Homesteading for Beginners community through this very topic. I decided a podcast episode on this topic would be good for those dealing with the same thing.

I didn't poll any of my audience but I imagine some of the objections from the spouse that is not into the idea of homesteading might be concerned with:

  • the cost of starting a homestead
  • giving up modern convenience
  • of fitting in as a homesteader.
  • their kids will be deprived and sheltered
  • family and friends will judge their lifestyle.
  • added work to their already busy life.

If any of these objections resonate with you, I'd love to hear your thoughts. You can send me a direct message on Instagram. If I didn't list an objection send me that as well.

16 May 2023044. Three Tips for Growing Food in a Small Space00:11:36

Many people don’t realize how much growing space they have until they start growing food. Here are some tips for you if you want to start growing food in your backyard.

  1. Find food already growing on your property. Maybe you have a fruit tree or berry bushes already on your property.

  2. Use fences or build trellises to grow food vertically. Many plants prefer vining up. This frees up tons of space.

  3. Don’t get hung up on perfection but do make your garden a place to relax and enjoy. The more you want to hang out in the garden the better. Upkeep will be easier and your mental health will improve.

Thank you for listening to the podcast. I read all of the emails, DMs, and reviews and I appreciate the conversation.

02 Dec 2022018. How to Start Growing Your Own Food00:16:53

Growing food doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’re new to gardening it may seem that way. You hear people throwing around words like cross-pollination, root bound, indeterminate, and hardening off and you feel they are speaking a different language.

In episode 11 I talked about my thoughts on jumping in blindly to the homesteading life. I cautioned you not to start without some planning in two areas- when it involves animals and when it involves wasting money. Today I’m going to say the opposite and tell you to just do it! Just start that garden.

Here are 3 reasons why you should start now and not wait:

  1. Seeds want to grow. We just have to create a nice little bed for them to grow but their will to grow is strong.
  2. Growing food can be inexpensive. Learning to grow food has a low barrier of entry. You can find free seeds through people around you and sometimes through the food you purchase in the grocery store.
  3. You will only become a better gardener through failures and successes so the sooner you start the fast you will develop this skill.

Listen to the podcast to learn 3 things you can do during the winter months to prepare for next year’s garden.

30 May 2023048. Why Do YOU Want To Homestead?00:16:30

Why do you want to homestead? It may seem like a simple question to answer but I think diving a little bit deeper into your reasons for homesteading will make your journey much more enjoyable and purposeful. I think right now it’s really easy to get caught up in romanticism.

Social media, movies and tv shows can make us believe the lifestyles we pursue will be 90% romantic and 10% heartache but the truth is, there will be more than 10% heartache and for some people it’s much more than 10%

By choosing to have a strong reason for pursuing this lifestyle, not getting caught up in the romanticism and understanding difficult times don’t necessarily have to me bad times we can get the most out of our homesteading experience. We can choose to grow and become people who make positive impacts in our communities.

Today I’m talking you through your homesteading why to make sure your journey is laid on a solid foundation.

I’m happy to share that during the month of June the Workshop for Beginner Homesteaders & Dreamers is on sale! The Workshop is a 1 hour and 40 minute video of me walking you through most of the Homesteading for Beginners workbook which is also included in the workshop price.

I’m giving my listeners over 20% off of the already low regular price. Just visit healthyhomesteading.com/workshop and use code “PODCAST” to get the discount. This discount will only be available through the month of June so be sure to take action soon.

26 Apr 2023039. Raising Quail on the Small Scale Homestead Part 200:26:14

In 2020 when the world was shutting down it was our first year on this homestead in Georgia. I was starting to feel very lonely because all of my homesteading friends were back in California. That’s when I found a new startup app called Clubhouse.

I was in a new state, a new home, and far away from my homesteading friends. It was a really difficult time for me and then I found the social audio app where there were all these people talking about gardening, raising livestock, fermenting food, and all of the things I loved to talk about. I found my online homesteading community and I still have good relationships with many of the people I met back in 2020.

My guest today is Jasmine Bass and we met on Clubhouse. While we have not been as active on Clubhouse anymore, I have fond memories of the rooms we used to host together and all of the conversations we had.

11 Jan 2024085. 6 Steps to Effective Homestead Goal Setting00:20:14

I get the excitement and motivation that comes with the start of a new year. It's a fresh slate and a chance to set new goals and make positive changes. However, I also understand that it can be challenging to maintain that enthusiasm as the days go by. That's why it's important to approach goal-setting with a realistic mindset and create a plan that is achievable and sustainable in the long run. Remember to break down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks, and celebrate each milestone along the way to stay motivated throughout the year.

I have a process for planning and goal setting that has served me well over the years, and I think it can help you if you struggle to plan or maintain your enthusiasm throughout the year.

Planning and goal-setting process:

    1. Write down all goals
    2. Organize goals based on importance
      • Create separate lists for "Must-Have" and "Want-To-Have" goals
    3. Prioritize Must-Have goals
    4. Divide the year into four quarters
      • January through March (Quarter 1)
      • April through June (Quarter 2)
      • July through September (Quarter 3)
      • October through December (Quarter 4)
    5. Select 1-2 goals from the Must-Have list for each quarter
    6. Create a task list for each goal within the quarters
      • Include actionable daily, weekly, and monthly steps

25 Jan 2024087. A LOVE/HATE Relationship with Farm Chores00:20:10

Have you ever had a love/hate relationship with something? Well, I have a love/hate relationship with some of my farm work. I don't usually use the word hate, and there are very few things I actually hate. And I don't really hate any of my farm work. But I do strongly dislike some things, and I've come to realize that it's perfectly fine and normal not to love every part of your life. It's the things that challenge us that are often the reason we love the things we love.

Many tears have been shed throughout my homesteading journey, and a lot of those tears have been due to frustrations with farm work. My hands freezing while removing ice from water troughs and milking goats in below-zero temperatures (though the warm goat teats always warmed them up 😄) are two examples of these frustrating moments and have made me wonder why I chose to have a farm. Massive amounts of manure accumulate on every farm with farm animals. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with it. And the mud!! So much mud during rainy seasons.

Even though I have times of strong dislike for these things that make having a farm difficult, I still love the homesteading life. I love learning where my mind is limiting me from growth and pushing through it like a seedling emerging from its seed.

09 Sep 2022006. 3 Skills to Master First00:16:40

Can you guess what the 3 skills might be? Is it gardening? Or maybe sourdough making? Maybe it’s chicken keeping? Listen to the podcast to find out.

I wanted to make sure you know about the Off-Grid Homestead Bundle that will be launching on Sept. 16th and ending on Sept. 25th. If you are listening to this after Sept 25th I’m so sorry you missed it. There’s usually a new bundle about every 6 months and I plan to be a part of it again. It’s been an amazing experience.

I really don’t want you to miss this deal. Part of my job as your mentor and coach is to help you save money. We covered that in the checklist series. This bundle is a way for you to save a lot of money. You will be able to learn a ton of different homesteading skills by having access to over 140 digital books and courses. Plus, you will also get my new Homesteading for Beginners workbook in the bundle. The workbook is a more in-depth guide to getting you started. Over 100 different creators collaborated to put this bundle together.

You may even be following some of them on Instagram, Tiktok and Youtube. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode because a few of the creators have recorded a little bit about the products they have in this bundle. I thought it would be a nice touch for you to hear from a few of the creators themselves.

The topic I am discussing today is about skill building. Homesteading really is about skill building. It’s about building skills that allow us to be more self-sufficient and sustainable. It’s about having a set of skills that help ourselves, our families and our communities. It has a lot less to do with land size and more to do with how much we choose to produce instead of just consuming.

  • The private community is no longer available. Please keep listening to the podcast for updates on any community Mona's decided to start.

18 Mar 2023033. Homesteading With Children: 5 Things You Need To Know00:15:39

If you are wondering what it’s like to raise children on the homestead then this is the episode for you.

Get the Homesteading for Beginners checklist here: https://www.healthyhomesteading.com/checklist/

While my husband and I were in the middle of raising our kids we sometimes wondered if we were doing the right thing. I think all parents have some doubts. The homesteading life is great but there are some downsides and sacrifices that had to be made in order to live the way we did.

Now that I’m older and wiser and all of the children are adults I can see clearly the benefits of raising children in the homestead life. There were plenty of downsides to the lifestyle but the benefits far out weight them.

Here are 5 things you need to know about homesteading with children: All of these things may not be true for every child or homestead but if your children are growing up the way mine did then this is a possible outcome.

  1. Your children will discover that being bored is not a bad thing.
  2. Your children will learn about life and death.
  3. Your children will gain an appreciation for nature.
  4. Your children will learn about hard work.
  5. Your children will know things their peers don’t.

04 Jan 2024084. How to Stay Focused on Your Homesteading Goals in 202400:17:49

While I was planning for my homestead and business goals for 2024, the word "invest" came to mind. I've realized that I need to focus on investing my time, money, and energy into things that will propel my goals forward. This also means reducing or eliminating things that don't contribute to my goals.

I chose the word "invest" because it carries more weight. When we invest, we are intentional and expect a return on our investment.

So, for 2024, I choose to invest in:

  • Organizing and automating my time to create more free time.
  • Putting more energy into activities I love, such as spending time with friends and family, working with horses, and engaging in artistic pursuits.
  • Using my money to grow my business and homesteading skills.
  • Focusing on actions that make a significant impact instead of wasting time on trivial matters.

I'm sharing this with you to encourage you to think about how you can be intentional in the new year. Even if you don't choose a word of the year, find something that symbolizes your commitment to improving your life and getting closer to your goals.

If you're looking for a word of the year, feel free to use mine. For me, the word usually emerges as a pattern in my life. It may be something that is missing or something I know is necessary.

I hope your year is off to a great start. Below are some ways I can help you further.

What people are saying about the workshop:

This type of learning is definitely outside my comfort zone, but I persevered 😉. I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about what I have to offer, I just do the work, but your simple exercises have been super helpful. I almost did not put out that poll…but decided to do it because I agreed to the class. 40+ people responded when I expected many to respond.

21 Oct 2022012. Why Slowing Down is a Skill You Need to Learn.00:16:57

When you think of the homesteading lifestyle is part of that picture you racing around trying to get all the stuff done on the farm? Or is it you have a pace that matches nature? A place where time is not your enemy and you have a more relaxed way about you.

Are you envisioning rest and calm or busyness and hurrying? If you are envisioning rest and calm then you must intentionally set up your life to create that.

Because the alternative is, you wish for rest and calm but you create busy and hurry n because you didn’t actually learn how to slow down.

Let’s stop creating busy and then blame busy for our business. How do we do that? By learning the skill of slowing down.

As homesteaders, we are creating a life close to nature. This is part of the appeal of this lifestyle for many people. Listen to episode 12 and hear more of my thoughts on this topic.

24 Mar 2023034. The Downsides of Homesteading with Children00:15:17

We see picture-perfect social media posts with families enjoying the homesteading life and then look at our less-than-perfect life and wonder what we are doing wrong. Well, you're not doing it wrong. Picture perfect is a moment in time. The really good stuff happens in the messier parts of life.

On today's episode, I continue the conversation about homesteading with children. I go into a little bit of the downsides but I'm offering the upsides to those downsides as well. If you have kids or dream of raising kids on the homestead this episode is for you.

30 Dec 2022022. How To Start 3 Homestead Income Streams in 202300:14:55

One of the most useful things I did in 2022 was tapping into turtle tactics. What are turtle tactics, you ask? Turtle Tactics basically are setting your goals up to have the consistent, slow pace of a turtle. Or tortoise.

We all know The Tortoise and The Hare story, right? The race between the tortoise and a hare. The hare seems the obvious winner because he’s fast and a little cocky and the turtle is slow and consistent. The turtle wins the race because of his slow consistent pace. To me, this story is the perfect example for someone wanting to reach any goal but especially financial goals. Slow and steady wins the race.

We can use these turtle tactics with all types of income streams. In episode 13 of the Homesteading for Beginners podcast I go into the 3 income streams you should have to set yourself up for longevity on the homestead. I encourage you to go back and listen to that episode.

Three income streams allow for enough income diversity so that if something were to go wrong with one, you’d still have another to fall back on.

These 3 income streams ideally should be related to homesteading. The reason is that growing your skill set while you are getting paid is like killing two birds with one stone.

  1. On- homestead Income
  2. Off-homestead Income
  3. Online Income

I’ve spent years doing things the complicated way by learning most of what I know through trial and error and let me say, it sucked.  It’s so worth it to pay someone to teach you how to get where you want to be. You will cut out some much wasted time, heartache and loneliness. Starting a business can be a lonely experience. The good news is I can help get you started a lot faster and in a smarter way than I did. Having someone cheer you on and believe in your business venture can make all the difference, especially if you choose to take the slow and steady turtle approach I mentioned in this episode.

26 Aug 2022004. How To Get Started Homesteading: Checklist Part 400:13:57

As a beginner, you are in a very good position because you can set yourself up in a way that avoids some pitfalls that come with this journey by listening to those that have gone ahead of you. I wish I had someone speak to my husband and me about what I’m going to share with you today.

Today we will be going over Part 4 of the Homesteading for Beginners checklist which covers the topic of saving money in preparation for your journey or projects on your homestead.

The topic of money is actually a huge pain point in a homesteader’s journey. If you desire to one day have a piece of property or you have a piece of property and can’t improve it, I share ways for you to find money to add to your homestead savings.

How much you want to save will have to do with what it is you are saving for. If you are saving for a down payment on a house with land, then this is likely going to take a long time but if you are saving for smaller things like a chicken coop then obviously it will take less time.

In either case, the way you save money is by reducing your spending or increasing your income or both. Listen to this episode to find money by reducing your spending and adding it to your savings account.

18 Jan 2024086. How to Start Homesteading in 2024: Free Checklist00:13:28

If you are listening to this you are likely a new homesteader or homestead dreamer. You are either in the beginning years or the dreaming years of your journey.

It seems homesteading has gained in popularity these past few years. It’s no surprise. Since 2020 people have been evaluating their quality of life and their health.

Sipping tea while sitting on your front porch overlooking the acres of land. Spending your days watching your chickens and goats enjoy the land you own and feeling very satisfied with all of the self-sufficiency skills you are learning in the process.

Having skills that make you feel less dependent on the grocery store because you know how to grow and raise your food.

These are the dreams many people are currently having. Well, in 2020 I realize my dream is to see more and more people live the homesteading lifestyle in the best way possible. This includes preventing bad starts and overwhelm.

On today’s episode, I’m going to revisit the how to start a homestead topic. In the first 5 episodes of this podcast I go in more depth by following the Homesteading for Beginner checklist I create. But I’ve recently updated so I thought I’d go through the checklist again with the updated version.

16 Feb 2024089. Homesteading Couples: How to Get Your Spouse On Board [Rebroadcast]00:21:12

What do you do when your spouse or partner is not on board with your homesteading dreams? This is something I hear people struggling with all the time. One spouse is all into the idea of homesteading and the other has big reservations or is very against the idea.

Recently, I coach a member of my students through this very topic. I decided a podcast episode on this topic would be good for those dealing with the same thing.

I didn't poll any of my audience but I imagine some of the objections from the spouse that is not into the idea of homesteading might be concerned with:

  • The cost of starting a homestead
  • Giving up modern convenience
  • Fitting in as a homesteader.

  • fitting in as a homesteader.

This is a 2 part series. I'll go through these 3 objections this episode and the other 3 next. And hopefully, help both spouses or partners see both sides of the coin and some ideas on how to move forward.
