Carolyn Clare Givens is a displaced Northerner exploring the foreign ways of the South. I am Dr. Bhargava. I have been a public-school teacher in the U.S. for almost 20 years. I love teaching and I am passionate about distance learning. I come from a family of educators. My mother taught foreign language-Sanskrit for 35 years and then retired as a high school principal. I have followed her footsteps and chose a career to serve my community as a teacher, mentor, counselor, college advisor.

I have taught English, Reading, and Math at various grade levels and to students from all walks of life and social economic backgrounds. My experience includes teaching in Title 1 schools, affluent, rural, and urban schools.

I earned a Doctoral Degree in Instructional Technology and Distance Education from Nova SouthEastern University, Florida. I also earned a Master's in Business from NSU, Florida. I have passed on my passion to my kids as they have grown to be professionals in their fields at a very young age. I will continue to encourage our youth to excel in their endeavors.

As a certified teacher with years of experience in the classroom, a degree in find arts, and long-time homeschooler, Julie brings a wealth of experience to the learning pod. She has taught students from Kindergarten to Grade 10, including roles as School Librarian and Special Education Resource Teacher. She also has taken on specialized roles such as teaching at an arts school, technology lab instructor at a provincial demonstration school for students with severe learning disabilities, teaching a forest school pilot program, and her most recent role teaching Gifted Education. She currently teaches a forest school program on her farm in Ontario, where she combines what she has learned in classrooms, and more importantly through homeschooling, within a small community of children.

Artyom Zinchenko, PhD, is an accomplished author and cognitive neuroscientist with extensive experience in the field. He earned his Doctorate in Cognitive Neuroscience from the Max Planck Institute for Cognitive Human and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, where his research focused on emotions and cognitive conflict processing.

Dr. Zinchenko is now a researcher and faculty member at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, where his research interests include cognition-emotion interaction and long-term memory guided attention during visual search. He uses various neurophysiological methods to support his research, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, electroencephalography, skin-conductance, eye-tracking, and combined EEG-fMRI methodology.

On this episode, Jara, Homeschool Mom of 2 shares her passion for raising her young men, her focus on healing 'self', honoring the leading role you have in your young learner's life, the importance of knowing your history and understanding your culture.

Jara's Bio: Jara, mother of two boys, has been living with her family in Norfolk, Virginia since 2005. Prior to children She held several job titles ranging from waitress to executive assistant. She graduated from Norfolk State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Currently she is a Commit and Mixxedfit instructor, and she is also certified in 1st Aid, AED, and CPR. Relatively new to the Dance Fitness scene, she received her Mixxedfit Certification in September 2018 and began teaching in February 2019. Fitness is my passion.

After having her children, she found herself heavier than she had ever been. At the time she had been telling her oldest son, then 5 that the three main components to a healthy life included 1. Eating, 2. Sleeping and 3. Exercising. Soon she realized she wasn’t following her own words, and immediately decided upon a gym membership with the YMCA. After enrolling, she began trying class after class until she fell in love with Zumba. After about a year of consistency she required more challenge and got introduced to the then Hip Hop Class, now called MIXXEDFIT. There she learned dealt with some harsh truths about her own self love. Through discipline and consistency, she began to witness not only her physical form change but her mindset change.

Jara is grateful for her fitness experience, and to all those who have influenced her on her journey. She strives to honor those instructors who have aided her on and off the dance floor, through her classes and in her personal lifestyle. She has a strong love of fitness and a dedicated practice, and hopes to share that love and dedication with anyone who is willing to get on the floor. Her goal is to help individuals realize that fitness is more mental than it is physical and growth through fitness can be an all encompassing change of mind, body, and spirit. Due to her experience as a young single black fit-activist mother, BREATHE was born. Breathe is a book that teaches you how to make good healthy smoothies in a simple and delicious way. It is a collaboration of smoothie recipes that she put together to assist families, individuals, women, men and children alike to build resiliency everyday and live healthy eternally. She has taken the holistic approach to help her through her journey modeling, her fitness and healthy food lifestyle.

Guest: Nikolai Pizarro @raisingreaders

For over 10 years, Nikolai Pizarro, has worked to empower predominantly Black and Brown parents and caregivers, particularly segments further marginalized by socioeconomic factors, with science based frameworks of early brain development, literacy instruction, non-violent discipline, and self-directed education. Her book, Ring the Alarm, has been used by programs sponsored by Brooklyn Kindergarten Society and the Department of Health. She has facilitated workshops at hundreds of preschools and private early childhood centers, including over 300 Early Start and Head Start Centers. 

Over the past 8 years, as her own unschooling journey with her son has unfolded, her work has increasingly included private and small group coaching and collaboration with families looking to transition from conventional schooling to self-directed models and just as importantly, a commitment to reconnect with our assignment to children rather than the school system, curriculum, values, and metrics. "This work is bigger than where and how children do school. This work is in defense of childhood and our divine assignment to center humanity and belonging. " she shares. 

As a response to the collective disconnection throughout the covid pandemic, she started the facebook group BIPOC-led Homeschooling & Communities of Care SUPPORT, for BIPOC families and co-conspirators committed to Black and Brown liberation with now over 3,000 members, a free community text line, 404-737-1065, which reminds parents to center humanity at home, an early literacy system (The Foundation Bag),  and has initiated a project to turn her own home into a self-directed, forest school and permaculture, mixed age co-op.

She is also the creator of a free adaptable arts-ed curriculum, B.A.E. Black Art Excursion, consultant with Anahsa Consulting, and a certified Forest School Director.

On this episode, Nature Speaks' Founder, Rachel shares her love for raising and nurturing horses, how important it is to learn self-sustainability, the benefits of horse manure, the healing capabilities that horses possess, the many programs they offer homeschoolers, and she gives us a tour of the farm.

Nature Speaks was created from a very personal tragedy that changed who I am. While riding my leased horse Jazz, in the woods of Palm Beach Gardens, the horse collapsed underneath me  and I slid on my face in the sand where I landed superman style. When the horse stood back up she stepped on the back of my hand breaking my pinky finger in half. Three days later, while I was in and out of plastic surgery  to put my face back on in the hospital, Jazz was hit by lightning in her pasture and killed. I was devastated. Now in addition to my body being broken, my spirit was too! I cried for days.
​At the time I owned a public relations firm called NozNewz Communications, Inc. I represented businesses, non profit organizations and government entities in Palm Beach County for almost 20 years. 
During my recovery I read voraciously! The book that changed my life is called the Tao of Equus by therapist and horsewoman Linda Kohanov.  She writes about her experiences living with her herd of horses and using those experiences to help others through the practice of  equine therapy. I studied her model of equine therapy and  those of other practitioners but I felt a little empty. Equine therapy is ground work with the horse only. It does not include riding. But to me and the kids I wanted to work with, riding the horse is an important component to empowerment. So I created a life skills program called "Who's in Your Herd?" which teaches about making good decisions in life in a very simple way. Decisions which will affect the future path of a youngster and we use the horses as our facilitators/teachers assistants. As horses live in herds, so do people but our herds change throughout the day and throughout our lives. We use the  philosophy of taking care of the horses as a metaphor for taking care of oneself. 
So my future path became more clear and I took a risk by taking an equity loan out on my home and started Nature Speaks with the money. I knew that horses helped me in my recovery and I was desperate to share that with others who needed personal growth.  
Rachel Ibarra is an approved contractor for all Florida public schools and was a member of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office COP Mounted Unit for five years. Nature Speaks offers western riding lessons, homeschool programs and field trips, Equine Assisted Learning workshops and summer and winter break activities.

Chanita Williams holds a M.S.W from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, B.S in Sociology from the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, a B.S. in Social Work from Salisbury University, and is a Google Certified Educator. One of her greatest accomplishments however, has been successfully homeschooling her three children for over 16 years with her husband. With a former background in child welfare and family support services, she has a passion to see families whole and thriving. Chanita enjoys teaching students online and in a traditional classroom. She has taught science, social studies, language arts, math, art, and music in a classical co-op. Chanita is the CEO and founder of S.H.E. Training and Consulting, LLC (STC). STC provides social emotional learning clubs, virtual tutoring, training and supportive service to families with school aged children K-12 in homeschool and traditional school environments. Our services offer parent planning sessions, training workshops, curriculum selections and creating a successful portfolio review. Luminous Minds was founded and created by Chandra Roughton (Ms. Chandra), a passionate educator/teacher and lifelong learner for over 24 years.

She has worked tirelessly to close the existing achievement gaps in our educational system, all for the benefit of ensuring all children receive the high-quality education they deserve.

Laurie Block Spigel is an author and educator specializing in game-based, student-centered learning for all ages. Laurie homeschooled her children in New York City, where she taught popular classes and created the informational website HomeschoolNYC. Her book, Education Uncensored: A Guide for the Aspiring, the Foolhardy and the Disillusioned (2006), is part memoir and part homeschooling guide, with an overview of education, and explanation of what’s wrong with America’s educational system. Her new book, Letting Them Lead: Adventures in Game-based Self-Directed Learning, chronicles years of improvisational teaching, with groups of homeschoolers in elementary, middle and high school. Laurie shares personal insights and honed techniques in anecdotes of classes where curriculum was created for and by the students. Dr. Jason B. Esters has been a community advocate for social justice and education reform in Philadelphia for well over a decade and is now an Assistant Professor of English at the Community College of Philadelphia. Jason grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and as a child, Jason fell in love with all of the books on Momma and Daddy’s bookshelves. His parents let him read any books he wanted, even the dangerous ones. Jason attended Jackson State University and received his Ph.D in English from Temple University. He is unapologetically Black and an unabashed follower of Christ. Jason is always thinking about institution building and is always writing. He is currently writing a book on substitute teaching as he continues to work with Philadelphia students in the School District of Philadelphia. He lives right outside of Southwest Philly with his beautiful wife and their four brilliant, brown, and rambunctious children.

Dr. Richard Maurice Smith is the lead pastor of The Movement Church in Maryland, where the focus is to continue the love movement that Jesus started. He is also the Special Advisor to the Provost on Diversity Initiatives and an Associate Professor of Sociology at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD who specializes in the Sociology of race, racism and religion. In addition to being a committed teacher of God’s word, he is an active speaker, writer, and consultant on Christian living, race/racism, social justice and Black culture and has led trainings, focus groups, and discussions about current racial and cultural issues. While he has many accomplishments, his most important ones, besides being a Christ follower, include being married to his beautiful and brilliant wife of twenty years, Camille, and having three amazing children.

On this episode, Founder of Off Da Beaten Path, Dominique, shares her personal educational journey, the need for individualized learning resources, getting her GED, and the importance of parents advocating for their children with disabilities.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Dominique understands what it means to stand out. She says dropping out of high school was the best decision she ever made because it was when she realized her power and autonomy.

While studying for the GED high school equivalency exam, they also tutored and taught others in various GED subjects. Finding alternative education was life-changing for Dominique. They went on to study at the self-directed undergraduate and graduate programs of Goddard College, focusing on Community Education. Their graduate thesis investigated culturally responsive and inclusive history education. Their work and life include mental health advocacy and anti-racist efforts.

Dom believes that everyone is a genius, and that it is the educator’s responsibility to observe, nurture, and empower the genius already there.
Dom has over ten years of education experience with learners of a variety of ages and in a variety of settings. They have worked with hundreds of young people and plan to work with thousands more.

In my twenties, I became a Waldorf teacher. I taught first-graders how to read using a traditional phonics-based approach combined with Waldorf multi-sensory methods.Later, I became a reading interventionist and I put together my signature reading program, incorporating best practices from many different sources, including the latest research on the teaching and learning of reading.Interesting fact: I'm a "second generation" reading teacher. My father was a reading and writing teacher for over fifty years, and my sister teaches reading to ESL students. It is in the family!I currently study in the Master's Program in Literacy at the University of Cincinnati. My goal is to complete advanced research on reading assessment which will help differentiate different "types" of dyslexia. I have three children, a husband, and one cat, and my hobby is growing plum trees!

LaTisha Evans is a veteran homeschooler of 24 years. She has homeschooled all 4 of her children from preschool to 12th grade. She is an expert in helping others understand and maximize the significant window of time we all have with our children in their formative years. On this episode, the founder of Realizing Genuis, Homeschool Mom, Heidi, shares her homeschooling journey of 22 years, the time she spent in the classroom, her many trials and errors in finding the methods that worked for her family, the importance of establishing a healthy relationship with your kids, and her reasons for establishing 'Realizing Genuis'.

Heidi Christianson has a diverse background in education.  She has taught in the university, community college, private school, and charter school environments.  She has also been homeschooling her five sons for over 20 years.  Her quest to personalize her own children’s education has led her on a journey that has included helping found her local commonwealth school (a homeschool community), writing her own curriculum, public speaking, and putting on several conferences (Realizing Genius), as well as working as a teacher for a homeschool charter school in California.  She is currently the director of operations at the Leadership Education Mentoring Institute, the founder of The Genius Paradigm, and the owner of Realizing Genius.  She hosts the Realizing Genius podcast and co hosts the LEMIWorks! Podcast.

On this episode, Jessica, Former Public School Teacher, shares insights of her life in the classroom, her math tutoring service, the support young learners need to succeed, and the flaws she witnessed in the public school system.

Jessica's Bio: Jessica is a former middle and high school math teacher turned homeschool math teacher and private tutor. After teaching in the public school classroom for 10 years and feeling so discouraged and disheartened by what she saw in the public school system, she left the classroom to find a better way to teach math to more students. That’s when she started The Mindfull Mentor, where she teaches math in a way that’s fun and laid back, not scary and hard, to show students that math can be interesting and exciting and much easier than they think! She teaches group math classes for grades 3-8 both in person in Greensboro and online over zoom. She’s also passionate about researching and sharing homeschool resources to help other families make the transition to homeschooling, and make it easier and more fun for both the kids and the parents!

My name is Ashley Jefferies and I am an author, speaker,parenting coach, wife, and mother to an amazing 11 year old son.  In my career as a speech-language pathologist, I have always enjoyed working with children and watching them succeed. Equally important, I have enjoyed working with various families, supplying them with knowledge and skills to help with their child’s development.

Later in life, I went back to school and received a second master’s degree in educational psychology. The knowledge I gained from my studies prompted me to write a book geared towards parents and caregivers of children that highlights the needs of children that sometimes go unmet and some of the potential consequences when important needs are not met. I have a passion for children, and I understand that setting children up for success later in life begins in the home. My desire is to assist parents in going beyond simply providing the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter for their children. I want parents to meet the unspoken needs of their children as well.

Working in home health and Greenville County Schools as a speech-language pathologist has taught me a lot about the impact a child’shome life can have on future success.  It is vitally important that we asparents strive to provide a home environment that allows our childrento grow and flourish.  That is the reason I wrote the book Protecting Your Greatest Investment:  Investing in the Needs of Children and started Flourishing Futures: “Empowering Your Child for Lifelong Success,” a twelve-week group/individual coaching program for parents of children ages 5-12.  Through research and experience, I wanted to offer resources to assist parents as they navigate the challenges of parenthood and strive to provide the best possible home environment for their children to be successful.

She is also the Co-Founder and Sponsor Chair of the Georgia Black Home Education Network (GBHEN), a collaboration of homeschool leaders that highlights diverse and culturally rich educational choices.

Nicole is the wife of Willie Doyle, Jr., an Engineer by profession and the Science/ Math Instructor of their four children, including two homeschool graduates. The Doyles believe according to Psalms 1:3 that when they water their family in the Word of God, then the children will flourish. Nicole and her husband, Willie, seek to create a joyful and experience riched homeschool experience for their four children. Their family mission is to love, teach, and encourage their children as lifelong learners to discover and carry out God's unique plan for their lives.

Season 2- Episode 50

On this episode, teacher, Ruth, shares the importance of making learning fun, the need to be able to effectively communicate an idea, her catalog of books, the long-term effects of social media, the value in trusting your kids, some of the life skills we should focus on building up in our kids, and ensuring that kids put more focus on the solution than the problem.

Award-winning artist and author Ruth A. Douthitt has been drawing and writing since an early age. An Arizona native, she first was inspired by her fourth grade teacher to learn more about the fine arts and to make it her life's endeavor. Later, her high school English teacher entered her poetry into a contest that she won. Her art teacher gave her many challenging class assignments that helped her win two scholarships to study art in college.

She has had a one-woman show in New Bern, North Carolina where she and her husband were stationed with the USMC. It was there that Ruth developed a love of wildlife art and drawing animals. She did "pet portraits" while working at Ballantyne Framing & Art. She also was able to sell her watercolors there as well. Back in Arizona, she began painting portraits of children. First she started painting friend's kids and pets, but that grew into a business. Her commissions increased thanks to positive "word of mouth" reviews from clients.

Her clients range from Police officers, lawyers, and Superior court Judges to stay-at-home moms and grandmothers: all wanting realistic portraits of their beloved children or grandchildren. It was around this time that Ruth drafted a story she had in mind ever since her time in North Carolina...a story about dragons.

She completed her B.A. in Visual Arts from ASU and a Masters degree in Education from University of Phoenix. Ruth has taught art at Glendale Community College and is a member of the Arizona Watercolor Association. She finally had her first book published in 2011, "The Dragon Forest." Since then, she has had several more books released, including the 2017 Moonbeam Children's Book Award Bronze Medal award-winning "The Children" series. As an award-winning author of books for middle grade readers, Ruth decided to blend her art and her writing. She has illustrated many books: "The White Wolf," "Dragon Games," "Dragon Riders," and "The Road to Home." In 2023, she released her first coloring book! She plans on releasing many more...And, finally after 34 years in the making, she released her first picture book, "Peter and the Dragon Forest," with illustrations by her husband.

Helping children see the possibilities in life has always been my passion. I was blessed to have a solid upbringing with lots of exposure to education, travel, and different cultures and experiences and wanted these opportunities to be available to all children. Though I graduated as a civil engineer, following in my father’s footsteps, my mother had a Master’s Degree in Social Work so I was always passionate about mentoring and sharing knowledge. The power of the mind fascinated me and I learned as much as I could about harnessing our innate power to create miracles in our lives.

During the 2008 financial incident, I adopted my son Jonathan at birth. This incident also allowed me the time to be a mother while studying hypnosis as a tool to harness the power of the subconscious mind. I trained and became a Master Hypnotherapist and was soon transforming people’s lives. Having been raised in Jamaica, I saw that the American culture did not promote a lot of the core values with which I was raised, such as self-reliance, a determination to be happy and succeed, and an appreciation for the simple things in life which make life such a rich experience. This inspired me to share these values with my community, which I have been proactively been doing since 2010.

The greatest gift which has come out of the 2020 incident is that humanity has returned to living in community. My son was home with me and we began homeschooling. I have always wanted to be the number one influence in my son’s life, so this was a dream come true. I believe that we are supposed to live in Truth, Joy, and Love in every moment of every day and I share these values with my international community through my nonprofit, Seven Sisters Holistic Healing Institute (https://sevensistersinstitute.com/ ).

Leroy Nesbitt, Jr. is a social engineer and lawyer with more than thirty years experience in the education arena.

Leroy Nesbitt, Jr. is a graduate of Middlebury College and Howard University School Of Law. Following his graduation from law school he clerked for the Honorable George W. Mitchell, Associate Judge Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He then returned to Howard University serving as associate general counsel and directing the Moot Court Team at the School of Law. His work in the education arena continued at his undergraduate alma mater Middlebury College as Special Assistant to the President. He presently serves as Executive Director of the Black Student Fund. During his more than thirty years in the education industry Leroy has worked as arbitrator, lawyer, professor, administrator, programmer and consultant. He has worked with colleges in nine states and high schools in more than forty cities.

Leroy has served as the General Counsel for the DC Chapter of Concerned Black Men, Inc.; Treasurer, Dianne Princess of Wales Memorial Fund (US), Board member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; Education Transition committee of Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly and Board Member Stride: The Wright Foundation for Female Athletes. Board member of the Daniel Alexander Payne Community Development Corporation; Program chair for the DC-Maryland -Virginia, Athletes in Action and a consultant for College For Every Student.

During his thirty years in education Leroy has worked to address underrepresentation of people of color and women in STEM. Working in collaboration with the New England Board of Higher Education Leroy launched an effort to place students at Vermont colleges in graduate and doctoral programs in STEM. He advises the Percy Julian Institute Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine program of the Daniel Alexander Payne Community Development Corporation working with middle school students. At the Black Student Fund he created BSF STEM and gaming develop program teaching kids how to code.

He is married to Dr. Debony Hughes and has two daughters Nina and Malayna. Leroy has a Black Memorabilia collection with more than 500 items.
