20 Oct 2024How to Remodel Your Dream Kitchen with Total Confidence00:36:09

Remodeling a kitchen, as I have said numerous times, can be very overwhelming and stressful.  How can a homeowner feel less stressful and happy at the end of the project?  This is a common question among many other questions which is the subject of this podcast, a continuation of last week's podcast (October 13, 2024).

Gil Olachea, owner of Ceramica in Scottsdale, AZ, asked many questions during both podcasts, last week's and this week's, that are on the minds of many people.

Gil interacts with many professional designers and their clients so he has first hand-knowledge of the topics he brings to the table.

Here are some of the questions that were asked:

  • How can hiring a kitchen designer save money?
  • Can a kitchen designer consult for a few hours?
  • Does a kitchen designer work with the general contractor?
  • How is the right equipment for kitchens, baths and laundry rooms determined?
  • What should be considered in selecting appliances?
  • What is the difference between buying plumbing at a specialty showroom and a big box store?

If you have questions that were not asked or answered, don't hesitate to contact Nancy.

02 Sep 2024Completing the Perfect Remodel With Unexpected Challenges00:32:08

On this Labor Day Week I continued my podcast from last week (https://designerscirclehq.com/how-the-perfect-project-came-to-be/) on how this perfect project evolved.

Peggy, the homeowner of the project, is back again this week to chat about her and Dan's resilience and ability to adapt to unforeseen and overwhelming mishaps during this project.

We covered the following talking points:

  • The importance of prioritizing your wish list
  • Creating a budget
  • Working with your designer to come up with solutions
  • The first major catastrophe that affected the project
  • The homeowner's accident that happened before the drywall phase
  • Coping during mishaps
  • After completion of the project, what would the homeowners have changed?
  • What is the favorite components of the remodel

We talked about doing a video when everything is picture perfect in this home.  It is hard to visualize and appreciate all the beauty of this project by just listening to the podcast, so since I have a You Tube channel, I will post the video as soon as it is completed. The video will show and call out the subcontractors and their work.

Also I will post some of the completed pictures on my Facebook page - Home Design Chat with Nancy

06 Oct 2024The Hottest Appliances You Can't Live Without!00:32:04

Planning to remodel your kitchen or update your appliances?  When remodeling chose your appliances first because the size of the appliances will dictate your kitchen design and function of the space. If you are updating the appliances be aware of the sizes of the existing ones.

Once you know the purpose of each appliance on your wish list (size of the refrigerator, free-standing range, wall oven, microwave drawer) you then can research the brands and their benefits.  You certainly should be interested in what's new and what's out especially if you will be selling your home in a few years.

This podcast is all about the newest and most popular appliances and what they have to offer.  My guest is Andy Welemin, an industry professional with decades of experience. Andy works with Arizona Appliance & Home and travels between their 3 Arizona locations when needed to meet clients.

Our talking points today:

  • Induction cooking
  • 48" French door Refrigerators
  • New washer/dryer options
  • Appliance colors
  • Steam Cooking
  • Smart Appliances

05 Jun 2023Designers say These Kitchen Trends are Out for 2023 - I Disagree!00:25:33

A beautifully designed kitchen is essential for several reasons. Primarily, it is the space where we spend the most amount of time with family, cooking, eating, or even working. It's also important to keep in mind that the right kitchen can add to the resale value of a home.

There are several kitchen design trends going away in 2023, according to experts and interior designers, and of course, I will give you my opinion since I don't agree with most of them.

  • All White Kitchens
  • Open Kitchen Design
  • Upper Cabinetry
  • Matte Black Hardware
  • Faux Finishes
  • Tile Backsplashes
  • Over the Range Microwave
  • Carrera Marble

25 Feb 2024Out with the Old: Embracing Innovative Designs00:17:29

Styles come and go constantly!  Bell bottoms and crop tops are back and so is wallpaper, terrazzo flooring and floral patterns.

When it comes to remodeling your kitchen and bath, there are certain ideas that builders incorporated into their houses should never be brought back.

  • Why did builders think putting a desk in a kitchen was a great idea.
  • Those wet bars from years ago were not functional.
  • I never saw 2 sinks in the kitchen when I was called in to remodel and update the space.
  • Bathrooms designed with tubs in the ground and then later put in a deck made it dangerous and impossible to use.
  • Make-up areas in the master bathroom was a total waste of space.

What's popular instead of the above ideas?

  • Desks in home offices or closets
  • Wet bars turned in to Beverage centers
  • Multi sinks that are well designed for task areas in the kitchen
  • Bathrooms with free-standing tubs
  • Mirrors with integral LED lighting over the vanities

05 Jun 2020Are your Smart Devices Safe?00:25:33

Nancy's guest this week is Dan Hugo, a computer engineer with years of experience.  The subject was the Internet of Things and just how safe it really is. The more functionalities (apps) you add to your smartphone, the more information you store in the device. This could make smartphones and anything connected to them vulnerable to many different types of attacks.

Don't be naive and think you have nothing to worry about. Listen to this podcast. As mentioned on the podcast here are 9 security measures you can take to help secure your devices:

1. Install reputable internet security software on your computers, tablets, and smartphones. For instance, Norton Security Deluxe can provide real-time protection against existing and emerging malware, including ransomware and viruses.

2. Use strong and unique passwords for device accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and connected devices. Don’t use common words or passwords that are easy to guess, such as “password” or “123456.”

3. Be aware when it comes to apps. Always make sure you read the privacy policy of the apps you use to see how they plan on using your information and more.

4. Do your research before you buy. Devices become smart because they collect a lot of personal data. While collecting data isn’t necessarily a bad thing, you should know about what types of data these devices collect, how it’s stored and protected, if it is shared with third parties, and the policies or protections regarding data breaches.

5. Know what data the device or app wants to access on your phone. If it seems unnecessary for the app’s functionality or too risky, deny permission.

6. Use a VPN, like Norton Secure VPN, which helps to secure the data transmitted on your home or public Wi-Fi.

7. Check the device manufacturer’s website regularly for firmware updates.

8. Use caution when using social sharing features with these apps. Social sharing features can expose information like your location and let people know when you’re not at home. Cybercriminals can use this to track your movements. That could lead to a potential cyberstalking issue or other real-world dangers.

9. Never leave your smartphone unattended if you’re using it in a public space. In crowded spaces, you should also consider turning off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth access if you don’t need them. Some smartphone brands allow automatic sharing with other users in close proximity.

30 Apr 2023How to Get Your Design Projects Published00:33:39

Every wonder how those beautiful pictures of living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and more get into those magazines?  Nancy chats with John Roark, editor-in-chief of Phoenix Home & Garden.  John will explain how you can get your projects published.  Listen and follow these hints and ideas for any magazine or publication.

  1. Keep it offline, do not publish on your social media.  Magazines like to be the first.
  2. Pitch One Publication at a Time. Don't contact all the magazines.  Wait for a response from one.
  3. Submit Professional Photography. Your smart phone takes great pictures. You will need permission from photographer and homeowner.
  4. Research + Carefully Select Which Publication You Submit To.
  5. Tell A Story but Keep it Brief. Explain why and how.

23 Sep 2020You Can't Work from Home without This00:27:51

Nancy's guest this week is Sharon Sherman CKD, ASID, CID, an award-winning designer residing in Bergen Country, New Jersey.  Sharon has been published in many magazines and newspapers and has appeared on several TV shows.

The pandemic has resulted in many lifestyle changes, one of them being the necessity for a home office.  Many of us will most likely continue working from home and having a space to work efficiently is a must.

Sharon and Nancy talk about some basic considerations for a home office that will help you achieve a work space you will enjoy using:

Home Office Location: Where do you want to work?  It's very important to consider how you will be using the space to determine the location in the home.

Form Follows Function: A desk sized for the task and a comfortable chair are the first items you will need. If you don’t have a work surface, things tend to pile up..

Storage: Try to have an additional place to keep some of your things other than the desk. Even in a paperless office, there are still documents you will need to keep safe.

Technology: Staying Connected with a wireless hub and a fast connection that will allow you to work on your laptop or tablet from the desk or that comfy chair.

Lighting: . Make sure you have adequate lighting to prevent eye strain and illuminate the tasks at hand. If you are having virtual meetings, make sure there is good lighting in front of you as well as on the sides. The people you are meeting with need to see your face.

Climate Control:  It is hard to work when you are too hot or too cold. Make sure you are comfortable so you will want to spend time in the space and be productive.

Some final thoughts:

  • Keep your space organized no matter the size. A desktop file is perfect for active projects.
  • Decorate it so you will want to spend time there. Use colors you like to be around.
  • Keep the office in the office area. Try to not let office items wander.
  • Add some plants for natural decoration and stress reduction.
  • Create a chalk board or wipe board with paint. Keep those great ideas and goals where you can see them.

13 Oct 2024Achieve the Perfect Kitchen Remodel Without Stress00:30:08

Gil Olachea, owner of Ceramic, an upscale tile showroom in Scottsdale has been on this podcast many times explaining everything about the different tile products, the characteristics of tile and the tile trends for each year.  Obviously, Gil is very experienced at being a guest but he thought it would be fun to put me on the hot seat and interview me.

We covered many topics about design, what the advantages are for using professional designers and why kitchen and bath designers would save the client money, time & stress on design projects.

Homeowners have many questions when they are thinking of remodeling a kitchen and/or bath so hopefully we satisfied many of them, however, we found that we didn't address as many questions as we would have liked due to time restraints. We will continue the interview on the next podcast which will air October 20, 2024.

If you have questions about your remodel projects, don't hesitate to email me at Nancy@nancyhugo.com.

29 Jan 2022Is the Open Floor Plan Dead?00:29:09

Nancy typically publishes Home Design Chat with Nancy every Wednesday, but had to delay til January 29 due to scheduling conflicts.  Today's subject is the open floor plan and what Nancy's comments are about how this design can work for everyone.

Yes to the Open Floor Plan

  • Perfect for entertaining
  • More airy and spacious
  • Families spent more time together during pandemic
  • Multi-functional rooms

No to the Open Floor Plan

  • Separate dining rooms & foyers
  • Kitchen mess not seem by everyone
  • Separate spaces for each function

She also talked about how Covid-19 has changed everything about our lives as we knew it in 2019.  How we eat differently, we work differently, we dress differently and we socialize differently.

Summary:  After creating space within the home to be separated from family members at times,  there’s a major longing for a return to the days of gathering, together, at the center of the house. “People want to be with people.”

12 Oct 2022Could a Tiny House be for You?00:32:55

Tiny houses aren’t only capturing people’s attention—they’re turning into a full-on movement. People from all walks of life are choosing to downsize their lives by living with less and in less space.

That's our subject today.  Nancy welcomes back Chris Diamond who has been interested in tiny homes as an alternative to traditional living someday.

We home we answered questioned you might have about living in this doll houses:

Pros of Living in a Tiny House:

  • less water waste,
  • less electricity consumption and
  • people are forced to find creative ways to dispose of waste.
  • More effort is made to reduce, reuse and recycle.
  • Living a life like this generally makes you increasingly environmentally conscious and you find yourself trying your best to leave a smaller carbon footprint.

Cons of Living in a Tiny House:

  • Shortage of space. No extra stuff, be efficient, make do with less
  • Insufficient for multiple members: 1 or 2 people, possibly a pet
  • Opposite to luxury life: Tiny, affordable but not luxurious, declutter & simplify
  • Most don’t have washer/dryer

Tiny House on a foundation vs wheels

I mentioned a website that showed very attractive tiny homes that might change your mind if you are on the fence.

09 Oct 2020Good & Bad Tile - Know the Difference00:32:06

Floor and wall tile have been the rage for the last 15 years, but before you chose your tile, listen to Gil Olachea, owner of Ceramica in Scottsdale, AZ,  chat with Nancy about good tile vs. bad tile, and more.

1. A brief history
uses of clay (terra cotta, mosaics) tile date to ancient Egyptian times

2. Size trends
applicable to 'field' tile not mosaics
24" was ever popular & predominant just 5-6 years ago
24" x 48" and greater sizes are, now, ubiquitous

3. What is "Subway" tile
"I want that tile I see in the subway"!
Any rectangle tile can be considered "subway"

4.What materials are used to produce tile
stone, porcelain, glass, metals, wood, coconut, leather
porcelain technology so excellent, it emulates stone

5. Choosing a tile...
do some research, price-points, desired quality, uniqueness, value or...
seek a true professional to assist
        set a budget
        you-Get-What-You-Pay-For
        know the application

6. Applications vs. choosing material-types
where to use tile; typically, in baths, kitchens, powder
        consideration in choosing material types
        back-splashes in active kitchens

7. Installation
        DIY vs. hiring
good vs. bad tile installers; handyman vs. craftsman; knowledge vs experience
thin-set, grout; 'Big Box' vs pro-grade

8."Framing" the wall
        trim, moldings, borders

9. Maintenance
cleaning stone products do not use popular glass cleaner-type solutions; pH-neutral
seal ALL stone & natural material produced tile products

05 May 2024Mastering Kitchen Renovations: Understanding Cabinets, Countertops, and Sink Differences00:28:06

When homeowners decide to remodel their kitchen they can get easily overwhelmed by the many choices in cabinets, appliances, etc. because this is not a project most people do often.

Since many of the same questions are asked of me when I meet potential clients, I thought I would chose 3 areas and explain the difference and benefits of each.

Today I am going to explain the differences between frame and frameless cabinets and what the pros and cons are, and how they effect your budget.

Countertops is another area that the homeowner should be aware of and know the benefits of the different materials. Quartz and quartzite are becoming very popular in today's kitchen remodels.  How are these products differ and what you should be aware of when choosing your countertops.

Lastly, one of the most important items in the kitchen is the sink.  Sinks come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials.  Which sink would function in your kitchen is important to know.

Knowing all about the materials for your remodel before you start your project is very important; the decisions should not be left entirely to your contractor.

30 Sep 2024Exciting New Ideas that Have Replaced the Out-of-Date Designs00:17:38

Nancy is taking a podcast break so enjoy this previously recorded podcast recorded in February, 2024.

Summary of what this podcast will cover:

Styles come and go constantly and so to ideas that have been used by builders for new construction.  Will those designs resurface?  Were they really popular?

When it comes to remodeling your kitchen and bath, there are certain ideas that builders incorporated into their houses should never be brought back.

  • Why did builders think putting a desk in a kitchen was a great idea.
  • Those wet bars from years ago were not functional.
  • I never saw 2 sinks in the kitchen when I was called in to remodel and update the space.
  • Bathrooms designed with tubs in the ground and then later put in a deck made it dangerous and impossible to use.
  • Make-up areas in the master bathroom was a total waste of space

What’s popular instead of the above ideas?

  • Desks in home offices or closets
  • Wet bars turned in to Beverage centers
  • Multi sinks that are well designed for task areas in the kitchen
  • Bathrooms with free-standing tubs
  • Mirrors with integral LED lighting over the vanities

05 Feb 2024Will These 2024 Kitchen Trends be Popular?00:35:29

Trends are trends…they come and go.  You might like some and you might not like others. Most trends aren't new.

They just pop up every few years.  Some trends like carrara marble and navy blue cabinets are timeless but not every designer agrees.

Listen to find out if our guest, Jan Rutgers, owner and founder of Vestubal School of Design, and Nancy agrees with what the designers have to say.

  • Curved Cabinets are back
  • Windows for backsplashes
  • Omit the upper cabinets
  • Natural Stone is popular, but Quartzite will dominate
  • Earthy tones
  • Hidden Kitchens

Bottom line:  It’s your kitchen, your home.  Do what make you happy and what’s functional for you and your family

03 Mar 2025Older Houses vs. New Homes - Listen Before You Make a Decision00:28:08

When you are planning a move, you usually have a choice between an older resale home or a new construction home.

Buying your home is an important financial and lifestyle decision, which means you have to do research and planning.

Gil Olachea, owner of Ceramica in Scottsdale, Az, and I will explore the pros and cons of both options to help you make an informed decision.

The choice of a new or used home is ultimately a matter of preference and necessity. Along with location, housing needs and price, a home’s age and state of livability will play a major role in both your immediate homebuying and long-term homeownership experiences.

These are important points to ponder:

  •  Lifestyle limits
  •  Location of house and condition of support infrastructure
  •  Future repairs and upgrading to meet local building codes
  •  Efficiency, insulation, heating & cooling... Cost of maintenance
  •  New home warranty vs old home warranty purchase
  •  Is a remodel necessary?  Major renovations?
  •  Mature landscaping – nearing end-of-life?
  •  Finishes – window, floor, back-splashes, baths/showers, laundry, etc.
  •  Roof – Greater than 10-15 years is a concern
  •  Lighting – Incandescent vs. LED
  •  Presence of lead paint or asbestos?
  •  Aluminum wiring vs. copper
  •  Plastic vs. galvanized vs. copper plumbing
  •  Plumbing – copper vs. plastic piping?
  •  Your lifestyle

09 Jun 2024Learn about the Loneliest Color and How to Use It.00:28:54

We've heard of different ways of describing colors:   happy colors, bright colors, trending colors, but never the loneliest color until now.

Sherwin-Williams has introduced a way to tell the first ever color story of the least tinted color, and perhaps bring it out of the shadows!

Also, to give homeowners and specifiers the confidence to choose colors that are less than popular, and how to use them!

Laurie Clark, Senior Designer Account Executive with Sherwin-Williams, is back to chat with Nancy about color, of course.

Here is some of the topics Laurie will discuss?

Sherwin-Williams usually has a color forecast, a color of the year and even color of the months.

Where did the idea of The Loneliest Color come from?

How was The Loneliest Color selected?

  • Describing Kingdom Gold? Specifically, its tone and shade
  • Why Kingdom Gold has not been a popular color/the least tinted for consumers? How about for designers?
  • Where should Kingdom Gold be used in the home
  • With Sherwin-Williams and many other brands naming shades of blue as their colors of the year, why should DIYers and Designers leverage a yellow/gold shade?
  • How to build a palette around the Loneliest Color, or any color
  • Does Kingdom Gold have any historical context? Was it a popular color in a past era?

Where can consumers see more:

At Sherwinwilliams.com - click  “Explore Color” the can search The Loneliest Color, The Color of The Year, The Most Popular Colors and even order peel and stick samples

24 Mar 2021Tile Cleaning & Maintenance... Beyond Floors00:31:03

A very large percentage of homes have tile flooring, showers, backsplashes and more.  The question is how to clean the tile and grout. Gil Olachea, owner of Ceramica in Scottsdale, AZ, chatted with Nancy about the do's & don'ts of cleaning all tile.  Share with friends & family who have tile.  Most people are using the wrong products!

These are the show notes:

  • > Generally accepted cleaning myths
    Water
    Liquid dish soap w/ exception
    Vinegar, bleach, glass cleaner "Windex"
  • > Types of tile
    Ceramic & porcelain
    Stone
    Glass
    Metal
    Mosaic v field
  • > Grout joints
Grout joints behave like dirt squeegee's
Absorb: spills, grease, grime, oils, wine, etc.
    Cement v. epoxy -based
epoxy is higher-performance to stain resistance
New, innovative grout available with infused antimicrobial protectant
  • > Baths & showers, powder-rooms
    * in showers can harbor germs, grime, mildew
    * properly ventilate
    * 'pathway' to wall or substrate behind tile
  • > Kitchens - counters and back-splashes
  • >Sealers & cleaners
Seal ALL tile surfaces shortly after time of installation
    Misconception - barrier to staining
Spot-cleaning: baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, clear-liquid dish soap
pH-neutral, nothing that will etch tile surfaces or grout
    "Big-Box" v. commercial products
    Follow product manufacturers guidelines, instructions

02 Dec 2020IS YOUR KITCHEN FITTED OR UNFITTED?00:38:33

Nancy’s welcomes back Jan Rutgers, a regular guest on this podcast.

A little bit about Jan:

  • Jan Rutgers has been designing kitchens and products for over 25 years and is a recipient of Kitchen & Bath Design News’ Top Innovators in 2020 for the Kitchen & Bath Industry.
  • She has designed more than 1000 kitchens learning valuable skills with each one!
  • Her experience in Kitchen Design, Millwork Manufacturing and Product Development has led her to create VESTABUL SCHOOL OF DESIGN where she educates and mentors people passionate about the Kitchen Design Industry.

This week we are going to explore the unfitted kitchen–

What is it

  • A true unfitted kitchen is one where everything is free standing
  • It is furnished with individual items used for specific tasks
  • Items can be added as needed and arranged for different tasks
  • Canning and preserving of the fall harvest are a good example.
  • Tables would be brought into the space for better workflow during this busy season

Unfitted vs. Fitted

  • The invention of built-in cabinetry evolved the modern kitchen into what we call a Fitted Kitchen around the 1920-1930’s
  • All the elements in the kitchen are built-in or fitted to the space.
  • Indoor plumbing was part of this evolution
  • A main reason for the kitchen going from unfitted to fitted though was space.
  • Original kitchens were part of a large space so there was room to move things around
  • Single family homes began to be built and they were much smaller
  • A built-in solution was a much better use of space in small kitchens

What to do with appliances in the unfitted kitchen

  • Panel the refrigerator(s) to look like pieces of furniture
  • Microwave can be put in cabinet – hoozier with lift door
  • DW & warm’g dwrs with panels to look like drawers
  • Ranges can look very old fashioned
  • Ovens, steam ovens ???

Summary

  • A completely unfitted kitchen is probably not a solution for most people
  • A fitted sink with plumbing hook ups is more desirable than lugging water from an outside well!
  • A combination of a fitted and unfitted kitchen is a design direction that is one worth exploring.

28 Oct 2024Invisible Kitchens – Minimalism Meets Function00:36:54

Enjoy the Best of Home Design Chat with Nancy

Minimalist design and open-plan living have been all the rage for the last few years, and I don’t see any signs of it stopping. Who doesn’t love a sleek look and a decluttered space, especially when it comes to the most used space in your home?

An invisible kitchen, also known as a hidden kitchen, is a minimalist design that integrates kitchen appliances and storage into the rest of the home. The goal is to keep conventional kitchen elements out of sight so the room blends in with the rest of the space.

Jan Rutgers, owner of Vestibule Designs and frequent guest on Home Design Chat with Nancy will explain several ideas to achieve the invisible kitchen idea in your home.

  • Eliminate upper wall cabinets
  • Install display shelf
  • Create a hidden pantry
  • Incorporate a row of tall cabinets
  • integrate appliances with panels
  • Use Sliding doors
  • Hide the hood
  • Avoid door & drawer hardware
  • and many more ideas

Why are these ideas taking off now?

18 Nov 2020Don't Be a Victim! Learn how to avoid being scammed.00:34:07

What do scams have to do with Home design? Nothing, but our lives have changed and using this podcast to educate about various things is what we’re all about.

Scammers are inventive and keep coming up with new ways to con people out of their money.  Nancy and Chris Diamond chat about different types of scams and how you can protect yourself.

Scammers do their homework and find information about you before they make contact. They use a variety of techniques, including flattery and emotional manipulation, to draw you in. Older people may be more vulnerable because scammers often target people who:

  • live alone and may feel lonely and want to talk
  • are at home during the day
  • have money or valuables.

How to spot a scam

Some scams are very clever and they can be hard to spot. Things to look out for include:

  • offers that come out of the blue
  • requests to share your bank account details or verify a password or PIN
  • prizes that ask you to send money up front to claim your winnings
  • time-limited offers that ask you to act quickly
  • companies with vague contact details, such as a PO Box or mobile number, or a premium rate number usually beginning 090
  • companies that call you repeatedly and stay on the phone a long time
  • confidential offers that you're told not to tell family or friends about.

As a general rule, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

How to protect yourself

Scammers are clever and ruthless, and they'll do anything to get hold of your personal details. Be very careful about who you give your personal details to.

Never send money to someone you don’t know or trust. And remember - your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN or password or ask you to transfer funds for fraud reasons.

Many times designers and homeowners want unique items that sets their project apart from the norm.  The difficulty is to find the craftsman that can make their design a reality.

His background is very interesting and his creativity and knowledge of kitchen design and remodeling makes him a valuable asset to the projects.

Steve has patented an indestructible line of cabinets he calls Lifetime Cabinets. These cabinets are custom built in the USA, and have been installed in dormitories and fire stations.
