21 Nov 2023 | Kyra Jones: Multi-Hyphenate Black Feminist Powerhouse With A Mission | 00:47:40
Kyra Jones grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, a small city know for its crabs, boats, and being where Kunta Kinte was sold into slavery. You can extrapolate as to how an upbringing in such a location contributed to her hatred of white supremacy and her love of seafood. Kyra is a 2nd-generation West Indian American and spent most of her life talking shit over curry chicken with her Trinidadian family members.
After high school, Kyra left the east coast for the Windy City to study acting at Northwestern University, where she was one of only 4 Black theatre majors out of her class of 100. (Seriously. There were more Black people in her house than there were in her graduating class). While attending the predominantly white institution, she became frustrated by the amount of old, dead, white, male playwrights she had to study and perform. Then a professor in the Gender Studies department told her the definition of “intersectional feminism” and gave her some Angela Davis, and it was all downhill from there. Kyra became heavily involved in student advocacy, activism, and peer education around racial and gender justice, much to the theatre department’s chagrin. She graduated from NU with a bachelor's degree in Theatre and Gender Studies.
Kyra is currently a staff writer on season 2 of Woke (Hulu) and Queens (ABC). Kyra is the co-creator and star of the award-winning web series The Right Swipe (OTV). The Right Swipe was an official selection at Austin Film Festival, Urbanworld Film Festival, DC Black Film Festival, Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival, and many others. Her comedy script, Good Vibes Only, won Best Pilot at the 2020 Nashville Film Festival and was runner-up for Cinestory. Her upcoming feature, Go to the Body, won ‘The Pitch’ at the 2020 Chicago International Film Festival and Screencraft's virtual pitch competition. As an actor, she’s appeared on the series finale of Empire (Fox), Chicago Justice (NBC), The Chi (Showtime), Kappa Force (Revry), and Seeds (OTV).

28 May 2023 | Writer/director of MINAMATA starring Johnny Depp on creative process, wildlife conservation and how to get your audience to lean in | 00:45:00
The New York Times declared Andrew Levitas “has the Midas touch” when describing his continued work across multiple creative platforms. A mainstay on the New York and European art scene for over two decades, Levitasʼ Metalwork Installations® are widely regarded as a breakthrough in connecting photography, sculpture, and contemporary art. Levitasʼ “Organic Abstractions” (paintings built from homemade pigments and organic materials ‒ in some cases entire trees) have also received critical acclaim. Levitas is one of only a handful of American artists ever accepted to show with the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts held at the Louvre. Select exhibitions include: Metalwork Photography®: A Survey which was the first ever single artist exhibition at Phillipʼs Berkeley Square in London, Levitas: An Early Retrospective at New York University, and Metalwork Photography®: Sculptures at Phillips de Pury & Co. in Manhattan. Recent acquisitions include The National Museum Wales as well as 10 Downing Street.
Levitasʼ award-winning fine art engages with the same themes that are seen in his films. Minamata, Levitasʼ latest directing project which he also wrote, stars Johnny Depp. The film follows photojournalist W. Eugene Smith (Depp) who travels to the Japanese coastal town of Minamata to expose corporate negligence and government cover-ups by documenting one of the worldʼs greatest environmental disasters. David Friend of Vanity Fair detailed the film as “A deadly health crisis. Venal leaders profiting as the public suffers. An intrepid journalist trying to expose the cover-up. Andrew Levitasʼs powerful, impassioned Minamata is the movie for this moment.” Minamata had its gala premiere at Berlinale 2020. 22 Feb 2023 | Replay - Juliet Landau: Persistence and Strategic Thinking Pays Off! | 01:17:18
Kaia talks to her friend Juliet Landau who grew up in the entertainment business but became successful all on her own (even in spite of the narcissists that surrounded her). She's a multi-hyphenate powerhouse: actress, director, writer and marketer- and now also an educator. She opens the kimono to reveal some of things she wish she would've known earlier in her career, and how she has navigated her success, as well as writing/directing, and starring in her new, groundbreaking film A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD.
Juliet Landau is an actress, director, producer and writer. As an actress, highlights include her role as Drusilla on Joss Whedon’s BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER & spin-off ANGEL and co-starring in Tim Burton’s ED WOOD as Loretta King. Last season Juliet recurred in Amazon Prime Video’s #1 television series, BOSCH, as Rita Tedesco. She's currently recurring as ‘Cordelia’ on TNT’s CLAWS. Juliet just helmed her visionary, feature film directorial debut, A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD which has been picked up for worldwide distribution by Modern Films. She co-wrote and stars in the venture. With Gary Oldman, Ron Perlman, Robert Patrick, Lance Henriksen, Joss Whedon and best-selling author Anne Rice, appearing for the first time in a movie. Also in the works and partially completed is THE UNDEAD SERIES. Think Jerry Seinfeld’s COMEDIANS IN CARS GETTING COFFEE… This is VAMPIRES IN COFFINS GETTING BLOOD! … It’s the only series ever to gather the A-list of the genre together. Every one of the talented artists in A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD came back to participate in her series, as did Tim Burton, Willem Dafoe and many other notables. Other acting work includes starring opposite Whoopi Goldberg in THEODORE REX as well as starring in over 20 other films, appearing in many more, guest-starring frequently on television, extensive voiceover work in features, tv, video games and garnering rave reviews for her roles in the theater. Juliet’s previous directorial efforts include two short subjects. TAKE FLIGHT explored Gary Oldman’s creative process and was produced by Gary. DREAM OUT LOUD featured interviews with Guillermo del Toro, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rian Johnson. Both projects were produced with her husband Deverill Weekes under the Miss Juliet Productions banner.

08 Mar 2023 | Anatomy of a scary scene, the screenwriter of Leatherface takes us inside a horror franchise and shares what got him the job. Seth M. Sherwood | 01:24:11
Seth M. Sherwood is a Los Angeles based screenwriter, director, designer, and producer. He is a credited writer on Leatherface, and Hellfest and is serving as Co-Executive Producer on season 2 of Light As A Feather for Awesomeness TV & Hulu. He has feature and television projects in development across town.
Sherwood’s tale of the son of serial killer hot on the trail of a copycat killer, Interstate 5, appeared on the list, bringing him to the attention of industry execs looking for the next hot genre writer. Seth has penned a prequel to the original 1974 classic horror film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a highly anticipated origin tale entitled Leatherface from Millennium Films.
Sherwood has lived in Los Angeles for the past 16 years. He grew up in the Pacific North West, and started writing short stories as an undergraduate majoring in photography and design. He then attended graduate school at Cal Arts, focusing exclusively on prose writing. The move to Los Angeles convinced him he should try his hand at screenplays.
In grad school he wrote two or three screenplays. “They were those two or three you just have to write to get it out of your system. They’re never going to be any good, but you have to write them to get them out of the way, so you can start to know your craft better.”
After graduating Sherwood worked as an in-house graphic designer for various companies. He continued to write, but rarely circulated his work. “I was very shy and I wasn’t necessarily a great networker. I was writing but I wasn’t putting it out there.” After six years he finally wrote a script he was confident enough to go out with, and even then his engagement with the industry was sporadic.
Sherwood had some success with the Nicholl prize as a quarter-finalist which spurred him to continue writing. He wrote Interstate 5 which appeared on the Black List, and was introduced by a mutual friend to independent manager/producer Kailey Marsh. When Millennium was looking for a new writer to pen Leatherface, they approached Sherwood, who ultimately landed the gig.
To Sherwood, the key to success as a screenwriter is to be prolific. “It’s a number game. You have to have lots of scripts. I can’t even imagine going out there to the industry without at least two or three finished scripts, maybe even four. Nine times out of 10 they read your script, they love it, but they’re still not going to make it. They’re going to either want you to pitch on their idea or they’re gonna ask you what else you have or what else you’re working on, and if you only have one idea, that’s going to be a really short meeting.”
Sherwood’s advice to new writers? Focus on the writing, and success will follow. “If I could have all the time back that I spent worrying about finding an agent, I’d be very fortunate. It should not be a goal for new screenwriters. I was one of those people who had one script and spent a year wishing I had an agent for that one script, when really I should have been spending that time writing more scripts. Before Leatherface happened I had three or four agents interested in me, but they basically didn’t want to do anything with me until I had a deal, then once Leatherface happened, all of a sudden I had my pick.”
Sherwood now has his pick of projects too, and we look forward to seeing Leatherface tear up the screen in Sherwood’s new vision.

17 Dec 2023 | Professional actor Jay Tavare talks about how you prepare for a scene with Meryl Streep | 01:20:55
Jay Tavare describes himself best when he says he is a storyteller and a citizen of the world.
Jay's acting performances in several Oscar winning films--with some of our era's most talented and acclaimed directors and actors--are the natural outcome of his eclectic life experiences and the direct result of his intense focus on excellence and dedication to authentic characters. Jay's onscreen roles include: Pathfinder (Marcus Nispel, 2007) as Black Wing, with Karl Urban and Clancy Brown * The Missing (Ron Howard, 2003) as Kayitah, with Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones * Cold Mountain (Anthony Minghella, 2003) as Swimmer, Jude Law's Cherokee half brother and fellow Confederate army warrior * Adaptation (Spike Jonze, 2002) as Matthew Osceola, the enigmatic Seminole orchid thief opposite Meryl Streep * Street Fighter (1994) as Vega, the devilishly handsome and lethal Spanish Ninja * Into the West (Steven Spielberg, 2005 mini-series) as Chief Prairie Fire opposite Keri Russell * CSI Miami season finale, Going Ballistic (2009) as Manny Ortega.
For his role on CSI Miami Jay performed all his own stunts for the episode, including an astounding world class 23 story controlled free fall (more than 200 feet!) which was awarded an Emmy nomination. This sort of feat has given Jay an onset reputation as a bit of a daredevil. But it is more accurate to say he is master of an impressive repertoire of physical skills. Jay does not promote himself as a stuntman, but his experience as an athlete and dancer gives him the rare ability to create seamlessly believable characters by preparing and performing his own stunts when the role calls for it. It's no surprise directors and fellow actors recognize him for this.

26 Apr 2022 | Cara J. Russell: Development Exec, screenwriter and author talks selling your scripts right now. | 00:44:08
Cara J. Russell is a prolific screenwriter with a background in journalism. Her movies can currently be seen on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Drama, Lifetime, UPtv, PixL TV, and more. As of this writing, she has 10 + screenplay projects in development with various producers and production companies. In addition to her screenwriting, Cara works as a Creative Development Executive for MPCA (Motion Picture Corporation of America), a film production company in Los Angeles that is a world-leading producer of Christmas and family-themed movies and television entertainment.
As a Creative Development Executive, Cara has read and given extensive notes on hundreds of scripts. She works on the production side of film and TV projects for networks and streamers from the initial pitches through the shooting drafts. A large part of her job is working with writers and helping them get their scripts into sellable shape for buyers such as Netflix, Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, Paramount, ABC, CBS, HBO Plus, NBC Peacock, Disney Plus, Lifetime, and many more.
Working on both sides of the table gives Cara a unique perspective. She found herself giving the same notes over and over again to new writers and decided to write a screenwriting book. The purpose of this book is to help screenwriters who already understand basic structure and story elements but their scripts need a lot more work to get them into sellable shape. Cara explains the notes that are commonly given to writers by Development Executives on their submitted scripts to help you identify and solve those issues before you submit your script to a production company or studio. Knowing the right people, people who are willing to read your spec and/or are looking to hire writers for open writing assignments, doesn’t do you any good unless you can deliver a strong, professionally formatted, well-written, amazing script. You usually only get one shot to have your project read, and it is important to make sure your screenplay is in the best possible shape!
Cara is the author of Make Your Script Sellable: The Art and Business of Screenwriting, available on Amazon.
This is the book Cara would have wanted and needed when she was first starting out in her professional screenwriting career. Take it from someone who has been there, and works on both sides of this wonderful, maddening, exhilarating, creative industry, you can make your screenwriting dreams come true! Although glamorous, the entertainment industry is a business. This book affords an understanding of the elements of what makes a successful, sellable screenplay, It covers the business side of the movie industry and includes how to pitch your project, handling notes meetings, and delivering subsequent revised and properly formatted drafts to the production company.

It was there, in a kind of baptism by fire, which Jeff learned about the distribution and financing side of film, working his way up from film scout to president. In the process; finding distribution and or financing for over fifty plus films, managing a team of film scouts, as well as a team of acquisitions executives, overseeing the logistics of several theatrical releases, in addition to cultivating relationships with all of the major domestic and international distributors. Jeff’s drive and focus have been much fed by the unparalleled satisfaction of being able to help filmmakers and producers find distribution and audiences for their opuses. True to the ethos which was the impetus for his non-profit, a part of the job that brings Jeff great satisfaction, has been traveling to the different film festivals and sales markets around the globe to provide a voice and audience for independent filmmakers, as well as educating them on the nuances of film distribution, finance and business development - via panel discussions and workshops.

Instead, Behr elected to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career in writing comedies for television and film. However, instead of comedies, Behr made his mark in television dramas. His first job as a television writer was for the James Garner television series Bret Maverick (1981), and he later served as story editor for the series Jessica Novak (1981). Behr's writer/producer credits also include the series Fame (1982), Once a Hero (1987) and The Bronx Zoo (1987).
Behr's relationship with Star Trek began as a producer for Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) during its third season. At the end of the season, Behr left the series to pursue screenwriting. Three of the feature films written during this period are currently in development.
Behr returned to Star Trek in 1993 as a supervising producer for the pilot of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) and became a co-executive producer in the second season . His diverse talents and experiences as a writer led him to the position of executive producer late in the third season. Behr played a key role in the development of the popular alien race, the Ferengi. He wrote the book "The Rules of Acquisition", which is a humorous compilation of the guiding tenets of Ferengi culture. Behr also co-wrote a collection of short stories and fables based on the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition entitled "Legends of the Ferengi", which was published by Pocket Books.
After DS9 ended its seven-season run in 1999, Behr went on to produce other television fare such as the science fiction drama Now and Again (1999) and the Jason Alexander comedy Bob Patterson (2001).

21 Aug 2022 | WGA rules! Inside the comedy writer battles for correct compensation with Rich Talarico | 00:37:49
Rich Talarico is a 20+ year WGA member and two-time show captain who also served as strike captain during the 2007-2008 strike. He is a Peabody® Award winning and four-time Emmy® nominated writer and producer best known for his work on Key & Peele. Rich wrote and produced on shows like MADtv, Review, Saturday Night Live & The Tonight Show. Rich is an alum of Chicago's Second City. Rich appeared in featured roles on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, MADtv, the feature film High Fidelity and numerous TV ads including A&W Root Beer's classic commercial, "Mr. Dumass.” more at richtalarico.com . Rich is a WGAw Show Captain for Key & Peele
Rich’s recent interview I just did with latenightist, that explains the issues I’m campaigning on https://latenightist.com/q_and_a/pay-your-writers-a-q-and-a-with-rich-talarico-of-key-peele/
Rich's official campaign site for his WGA Board Seat Campaign: https://elections.wga.org/2022/rich-talarico
WHY RICH IS RUNNNG FOR THE WGA BOARD
Comedy writers have not been and are not being appropriately paid by the studios, and we need the Guild's help in this fight. Unfair use and numerous, MBA violations affects not just Key & Peele, but virtually all comedy writers, including many of the most known, most beloved shows. Royalty payments are distributed to heirs, and heirs of heirs. We need systemic change as companies continue to egregiously violate the 5 minute promotional clip exemption in our contract.
Additionally, WGA writers’ material is being unjustly exhibited on www.cc.com as an "Archive" (but we are not being paid archival rates) and according to MBA, "archival is not promotional." We need fair back pay for any and all Archival Postings exhibited on the cc.com. In addition to seeking better transparency between the studios and WGA, I pledge to advocate for improved communication between writers and the Guild.
OVER-PROMOTION & THE ABUSE OF THE 5 MIN PROMO CLIP RULE
First, what is a clip? The industry standard on what a promo clip is, has long been established as “Merv Griffin” style bits to entice the audience to watch/buy. Longer than something you would see on a talk show is too long. And, Viacom flooding the promotional space with hundreds upon hundreds of “promo” clips (many of which are illegally over the five minute limit) destroys us financially and will ultimately devastate all comedy writers’ livelihoods.
You consume a sketch show differently than you would consume a sitcom or drama. A clip from a sitcom or drama would entice you to watch the full episode or season, which you would theoretically have to pay for, while a sketch show clip would entice you to watch more sketches, which are currently available for free. This is not promotional use. This is not a fair and reasonable reading of the MBA "promo exemption clause." While the MBA is silent on the number of clips that can be used as excerpts, it is not fair and reasonable to gobble up whole shows and display them as “promotional.” The clips fail to be excerpts-- if the entire show can be watched for free in excerpt form. The promotion, in our case, is the exhibition.
As we've argued since 2013, five to ten clips per season should be sufficient to entice an audience to buy. Originally, the Guild backed us on this, but have since chosen to ignore these violations. Key & Peele only has 298 sketches in total. As of December, 2020 (just on YouTube) there were over 350 “promotional” full-sketch uploads and Viacom continues to add more day by day. Of these 350+ uploads, there are (at least) 35 compilations which include bundles of Key & Peele sketches, some of these are longer than the length of full episodes. There are also uploads that exceed seven, eight, and 12 hours. This does not even account for Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and other platforms where there are also hundreds of millions of “promotional” streams.
