During her annual New Year’s eve speech in 2023, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced that she will retire. The 83 year old sovereign recently underwent back surgery and experienced a decline in health. On January 14th, 2024, the 52nd anniversary of her father’s death and her own ascension, Margrethe abdicates in favor of her son, now King Frederik X. The Most Noble Order of the Garter sneaks into so many of my videos. On September 19th, 2022 over 4 billion people watched as the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II was lowered into the royal vault at St. George’s chapel, Windsor Castle. Leeds Castle has been called the loveliest castle in England and it certainly lives up to the name. The elegant stone keep, towers, and crenelated battlements surrounded by a tranquil moat, beautiful gardens and lush parkland are exactly what you would picture as an idealized medieval castle. Across the centuries, it has often been strong women who have owned, enjoyed, renovated and defended Leeds castle. It was the tranquil retreat for generations of medieval Queens, the scene of a deadly stand-off between great ladies, a prison for two accused royal witches, and a luxurious playground for aristocrats and Hollywood stars. In addition to being the Queen of the United Kingdom and the vast British Empire, Victoria might also be lauded as the Queen of Christmas. She and her beloved husband Prince Albert popularized many of the quintessential holiday traditions that we still enjoy today including the Christmas tree, Christmas cards and Christmas Crackers. Their 9 children enjoyed trees decorated with delectable dainties like sugar plums, candy canes and gingerbread. In the last episode we met 7 living former monarchs who chose to retire, hand their thrones to their children and enjoy their golden years. But not all living former monarchs chose to get off the throne, some were pushed off. In the 20th century, 28 national-level monarchies across the world were abolished. Their former sovereigns were downgraded, exiled or even executed. As the majority of these revolutions and coups happened in the first half of the century, few ex monarchs are still alive today. Their children and grandchildren carry on defunct royal dynastic lines and, if they’re lucky, enjoy what’s left of their ancestors’ glory, palaces, and fortunes. Today there are only 4 living former monarchs who lost their thrones when their monarchies were abolished. All of their reigns ended and one began in bloodshed. If you google “Princess Charlotte of Wales” you will be greeted by pictures of William and Catherine’s adorable daughter, born in 2015. But there was another Princess Charlotte of Wales, born over 200 years earlier who had a much different life. She endured the neglect of parents who hated each other and the abuse of a father who saw her as competition. She grew up resilient and brash. After dragging several young men along, she escaped into a happy love match with a dashing German Prince. They were every bit as popular as the currant Prince and Princess of Wales. As the inevitable heir to the throne, Charlotte embodied Britain’s hope for the future and the birth of her first child was feverishly anticipated. But horribly managed medical care caused her to died in childbirth at the age of 21. Her tragic death was mourned by the nation just as deeply as Princess Diana’s. The race to sire a new heir produced the future Queen Victoria. So every British royal since, including the young Princess Charlotte would not have existed were it not for the sorry fate of the original Princess Charlotte of Wales. Let’s meet her. Queen Victoria’s great-grand children, the children of King George V were a fascinating bunch. The two eldest brothers both took their turns on the throne. Edward VIII abdicated amid scandal because he wanted to marry a divorced woman, Wallis Simpson and because he never really wanted to be king anyway. He nearly toppled the British monarchy in the process. His younger brother picked up the pieces and became King George VI. What makes a man a King? Aside from genetic luck and a glittering crown, it’s a castle. In the last episode we explored the medieval castles built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century to impose his might upon the land. For his warrior descendants, the Normand and the Plantagenet, having a home that could withstand a trebuchet was paramount. But by the 15th and 16th centuries, war had moved from the castle to the battlefield and the new Tudor monarchs could prioritize grandiose spaces and luxurious living. Catherine Parr is remembered as Henry VIII’s 6th and final wife, the one who survived the murderous monarch. But while earlier wives, who ended their Queenship more tragically are glamorized, Catherine is often hidden in the background. Olga was the wive of Igor, the Grand Prince of the Kievan Rus’, a federation of people whose capital was the city of Kyiv, now the capital of modern day Ukraine. When her husband was brutally murdered by a subsidiary tribe, Olga went on a legendary campaign of cunning and ruthless revenge. Once in control of her husband’s kingdom, she was an efficient and effective leader. She converted to Christianity in order to get out of an unwanted marriage proposal. She is credited with introducing Christianity to the Rus people. After her death, Olga was canonized as a saint and is regarded as “Equal to the Apostles” within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Jadwiga, Female King of Poland was crowned at the age of 10. She grew wise beyond her years and was forced to make a difficult decision about who to marry – a young man she liked or an old man who would Christianize his country for her. Anyone who has spent time around a newborn baby knows that while adorable, they are mostly preoccupied with milk, sleep and soiling themselves and don’t exactly have the skills to govern a nation. Though some my argue that a baby might make a better head of state than a politician. Throughout history, the combination of hereditary monarchy and brutally short life expectancy meant that many rulers did inherited their thrones when they were mere infants. Some were even unfortunate enough to loose their fathers while still in the womb and be born directly onto the throne. In the late 1800s, American industrialists were raking in cash and living like princes, but they had no way, other than their mansions, servants and yachts, of making it clear that they were better than everyone else. Meanwhile, across the pond, the British aristocracy had come on hard times. They still had their titles, historic estates and aire of superiority, but they were running low on funds. This became a match made somewhere south of heaven when hundreds of American heiresses married cash-strapped British noblemen. Millions of dowry dollars crossed the pond to renovate ancient English mansions and bolster the ailing peerage, while American fathers got to brag that they had a baroness or a duchess in the family. There was even a magazine, “The Titled American” in which British nobles with a title to sell could advertise their eligibility to rich American ladies. Through most of history, monarchs selected wives for their royal blood and political significance. Women they actually liked and were attracted to were relegated to being mere mistresses. These women were usually local aristocrats or even commoners who would not be considered contenders to be consort. The majority of monarchs had mistresses and their wives usually looked the other way, safe in the knowledge that their place as Queen could never be usurped. The royal and imperial courts of Asia had complex systems of female hierarchy. The ruler’s wives and female relatives were at the top, and a great many other ladies were there to serve them. Similar to the ladies in waiting of European royal courts, these women cared for the rooms and wardrobes of higher ranking women, assist them in hygiene and grooming; and entertain them, keep them company, act as their secretaries and pass on all the latest gossip, crucial to palace intrigue. In Islamic empires, these women were collectively known as the harem. Anglo-phonic historians also use the term Harem or Palace Women to refer to the ladies of the Imperial courts of East Asia. In Christian Europe, Kings were supposed to be faithful to their Queens, but they still got up to plenty of hanky-panky with the court ladies. But in Asia, where polygamy was common practice, all court ladies were available to the monarch for sexual services, and if they took the Emperor’s fancy, even the lowest born woman could be promoted to concubine, consort or even Empress. If you think the kids in your family are a lot to handle, imagine having over a dozen of them! That was the reality for the royal women in today’s video. The primary expectation of Queens and other well born women of the past was to have as many children as possible to secure their husband’s dynasty and bare a few spares to be used in advantageous political marriages. Their fertility was their life. Charlotte of Belgium was the beautiful and bright only daughter of the first King of Belgium. Her life looked to be joyous too, when she fell in love with a Hapsburg Archduke, Maximilian of Austria. The couple’s numerous royal connections even got them a incredible job opportunity, to become the rulers of the newly established Empire of Mexico. They crossed the Atlantic full of tropical, turquoise dreams of being hailed as heroes. But they quickly discovered that they were philosophically opposed to the small percentage of Mexicans who actually wanted them there. As the Empire crumbled, Carlota made a desperate return to Europe to beg for help. Charles II, King of England, Scotland & Ireland from 1660 to 1685 is one of the most notorious lotharios in history. He loved the ladies and took both noble women and commoner actresses to bed, sometimes multiple times a day. And the ladies were certainly up for it. Henry VIII’s is infamous for his relationships with women. The domineering King took 6 wives during his 36 years on the throne. And he disposed of them with as much scandal as he wooed them – Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived. But three other women had an important impact on his childhood, his mother Elizabeth of York and his two Grandmothers Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret Beaufort. They have been dubbed by popular historical fiction author Philippa Gregory as the White Princess, the White Queen and the Red Queen. These women were caught in the brambles of the wars of the roses and fought tooth and nail for their children and for themselves. Episode originally aired in 2019, I have added a 2024 update. Of the 66 monarchs who have ruled over England since the Norman conquest only 8 have been Queens. These women have had to fight to gain and hold power. Through most of English history men outranked women in the line of succession so the only way for a woman to inherit the throne was if she had no living brothers. The wives of Kings, while called Queens are not monarchs in their own right and are referred to as Queen Consorts. Some of these female monarchs who were fortunate enough to occupy the throne were less than brilliant rulers. Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom was known as the grandmother of Europe. She and her husband Prince Albert had 9 children, 42 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 142 great-great-grandchildren. Many of her majesty’s estimated 1,239 total descendants married into royal families across Europe, from Russia to Spain, Norway to Romania and all over Germany. In addition to their royal mama’s short stature, beady eyes and haughty temperament, many of them carried another, more dangerous genetic legacy, hemophilia. This excruciatingly painful, often deadly disorder devastated royal families, caused the early deaths of at least 10 princes and contributed to the downfall of both the Russian and Spanish monarchies. Nzinga was the Queen regnant of the joint kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba, in modern day Angola in Africa. She stood up to the Portuguese colonialists and defended her people from enslavement. Her brilliance, pride and perseverance forced the Portuguese to recognize her kingdoms and she remains a symbol of freedom and resistance to oppression to this day. Through most of history, Kings selected wives for their royal blood and political significance. Women they actually liked and were attracted to were relegated to being mere mistresses. These women were usually local aristocrats or even commoners who would not be considered contenders to be consort. The majority of monarchs had mistresses and their wives usually looked the other way, safe in the knowledge that their place as Queen could never be usurped. Royals throughout history are notorious for inbreeding. But the European royal family by far infamously incestuous were the Habsburgs (Hapsburgs). The royal house ruled Spain from 1506 to 1700 and held the Holy Roman Empire from 1452 until 1806. These two branches of the family vollied brides back and forth like ping pong balls. Cousins married cousins and uncles married nieces. All in the name of keeping wealth and power in the family and keeping their blood blue. They were oblivious to the havoc all this intermarrying was playing on their genetics. The deliciously witty drama series ‘The Great’ tells the occasionally true story of Catherine II, Empress of Russia. In Ancient Greece and the Roman empire homosexual relationships were an accepted and common practice. In this hyper-masculine society the male form was revered for its physical perfection while women’s virtue was jealously guarded to ensure the legitimacy of children. In Greece romantic and sometimes sexual relationships between older and younger men was seen as an initiation rite. The Romans modeled themselves after Greece in most things but had strong feelings that a roman citizen should always play the dominant, never submissive role in a homosexual relationship. Prominent citizens sought out enslaved men, prostitutes, and entertainers to fulfill their sexual desires. Enslaved boys would sometimes be castrated in an attempt to keep them docile and immature for the pleasure of their dominant male lover. Though uncommon, marriages between men were not unheard of in ancient Rome. They included many of the traditional elements of a wedding including a dowry and the man acting as the bride would wear a veil. Through most of history, royals and nobles held a place high above the peasant class. Their word was law and they could often get away with murder, literally. So much unchecked power sometimes went to a rulers head, morphing their darker urges into unspeakable acts of violence and cruelty. The lives of peasants were given very little value, and there were few means to investigate or seek justice against murderous aristocrats. High-born psychopaths were nearly unstoppable in their bloodlust and often racked up victim counts in the hundreds. Let’s investigate the cases of 4 royal and noble serial killers from history, and look at the theories that one of the most famous slashers of all time, Jack the Ripper was really a member of the British Royal family. The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is a once in a generation event which will go down in history. But will it go down for all the wrong reasons?
