19 Feb 2018 | EP 84: Is Phubbing Ruining Trust at Work? | 00:35:26
Randy sits down with Dr. Jim Roberts of Baylor University to talk about "phubbing" - or phone snubbing. Phubbing is the act of paying attention to your phone at the expense of your significant other, boss, employee, or coworker. Dr. Roberts and his partner Dr. Meredith David wrote "My life has become a major distraction from my cell phone: Partner phubbing and relationship satisfaction among romantic partners." You can find it here. Jim is in the studio to talk about phubbing in the workplace. Particularly boss phubbing, and how it breaks down employee trust. His work has appeared in many media outlets including CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Huffington Post to name a few. The conversation also winds through a variety of topics including:
About Dr. RobertsDr. Roberts is a well known author with approximately 75 articles published in the academic literature. He is currently the Ben H. Williams Professor of Marketing at Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he has been a faculty member since 1991. His research regularly appears in many of the top marketing and psychology journals and has received two “Paper of the Year” awards. A primary focus of Dr. Roberts’ work over the last 10-15 years has been the psychology of consumer behavior. He is somewhat of an anomaly among marketing scholars in that his research is largely focused on the “Dark Side” of consumerism and marketing. Current research efforts focus on the topics of materialism, compulsive buying, credit card abuse, and self-control. His book, Shiny Objects, is available at a book store near you or on Amazon.com. The book takes a careful and amusing look at how our love of material possessions impacts our happiness and what we can do to find true happiness in a culture awash in material possession love. Dr. Roberts is a nationally recognized expert on consumer behavior and has been quoted extensively in the media and has appeared on the CBS Early Show, ABC World News Tonight, Yahoo.com’s “The Daily Ticker”, Time.com, US News & World Report, New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, Public Radio International’s (PRI) Marketplace, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Glamour, Good Housekeeping, and many other newspapers, magazines, websites, and television appearances. 17 Jan 2019 | Tough Love Marketing Advice with Kasim Aslam | 00:49:13
Solutions 8 Founder Kasim Aslam has some tough love marketing advice: you're probably doing it wrong. Solutions 8 does pay-per-click marketing for customers all over the world. Find out how to set yourself up for success and how to spend time on the efforts that matter. Below are some strategies for effective marketing that we talked about on the podcast: Kasim works with clients to come up with an organization's mission, vision, values, and voice.
Create an avatar for your perfect customer. Who is your ideal customer or client? Know them well enough that you could play them in a movie. Kasim also talks about making sure your marketing efforts are going towards something that will affect your bottom line. You may have many likes, comments, and shares on Facebook, but is that engagement translating to leads? Do those leads convert to paying customers? What are you getting for your money? Kasim also shares that he needs to know the goals of the organization to see if he can help them. The easiest clients to work with have products with a short sales cycle and good margins. He also talked about sales funnels. Kasim says you should begin at the bottom of the sales funnel, not the top. Find out what your customer needs now. For a plumber that would be, "my house is flooding," not, "I'm thinking about upgrading my bath next year." It's better to spend time finding out that your product or service isn't a good fit for the market early. Look for the ascension model after you have the customer. What other products and services do you offer that might make your customer's life easier? Kasim also had some tips for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

15 Jun 2017 | EP 30: Trust in the Workplace | 00:30:42
Parents teach their children (or at least should) to be kind to others, to be trustworthy, and to work hard. The lessons we learn as children are the keys to creating trust in the workplace. In this podcast, we talk with 360 Solution Strategic Partner Jay Mathis talks about trust in the workplace. Jay has been a partner since 2008. He’s also a pastor at Grace Church in Waco, Texas. Jay works with large and small companies, city governments, and non-profits.Jay talks about ways to create a win-win atmosphere in the workplace, including:Listening emphaticallyFinding out what’s important to others – ask them. We’re terrible at listening as a culture.Avoid absolute statements like always and never.Look for similarities and areas of commonality.Listening emphatically means being actively engaged with whomever is speaking. This is a sign of respect as well as just simple manners. People like good manners, it helps to build trust.Asking others about themselves is a staple to trust building. How can anyone fully trust someone that doesn’t care about anyone but themselves? The better you know your coworkers, the more productive you will be in group meetings and projects.A huge mistake that people make in the workplace is using absolutes like always and never. It is so common in today’s culture to exaggerate and using absolutes has become too common. It can lead to major miscommunication which will kill your trustworthiness. If you want people to trust you, you’ve got to become their friend. That starts with relating with them on a personal level.Building trust in the workplace is vital to success and happiness. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

15 Jun 2017 | EP 43: Controlling vs. Empowering Leaders | 00:39:26
Is it better to control or empower? Sometimes successful business leaders let their leading roles get the best of them…and not in a good way. There are two common leadership styles: controlling and empowering. Controllers impose external controls on their followers to keep them in line. This negatively affects employees and work they produce. Controlling leaders fear something being done wrong. What’s missing is trust. A strong level of trust with your team will help you communicate more effectively. A trusted team is an empowered team.Empowering leaders understand the capabilities of their team. They delegate tasks based on what they think each person can handle. They allow their team to grow and do more than they may have thought possible. They check to see if they need any help. They don’t do the project for them. Remember the old adage: “Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Constant communication and feedback are critical. One recent study wanted to see how kids dealt with boundaries. One school had recess on a playground with no fence. Another school had recess on a playground with a fence. In both scenarios, teachers stayed inside to let the kids make up their own minds about what to do. On the playground without a fence, the kids stayed closer together. Even though they had no boundaries, they were afraid to explore the unknown. The students with a fence ventured out and explored every inch within the fence. If you give employees boundaries, they’ll take more risks while staying inside the boundaries. Those who aren’t given clearly defined boundaries tend to play it safe since. They don’t understand their limits. They’re not sure how they’ll be graded.Empowered employees perform better because they understand what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and the strategy and goals they’re trying to achieve. The best way to lead is to empower, trust, and give employees the autonomy to do the work inside set boundaries. Clarify the mission and values of your organization, get all members on the same page, and your business will thrive. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

15 Jun 2017 | EP 46: Dealing with Crap Magnets | 00:11:02
Every day in corporate America companies deal with “crap magnets”. What is a crap magnet? Someone who’s first to gossip, holds grudges, and has a lot to say about what’s wrong in an organization without any real solutions. Almost every work environment has them. If left unchecked, they could start to suck others into their downward spiral of negativity. Sound familiar? Could you be a crap magnet? How do you deal with crap magnets? In addition to behaviors mentioned above, crap magnets often vent their frustrations at inappropriate times. If you to held a meeting to talk about negativity in the workplace, they would wait until the meeting is over to voice their frustrations. And they most complain to peers. Crap magnets rarely voice dissent to supervisors.Leaders, don’t let this behavior take hold. If you’re infested with crap magnets, try this three-step process:1 – Call them out.Crap magnets prefer to operate from the sidelines. Bringing their behavior to everyone’s attention can be uncomfortable. Which leads to #22 – Ask them to vent their frustrations in a safe environment.Crap magnets feel there is a reward for complaining outside of a meeting because they believe they can get others on their side without having to actually fix the problem. You don’t want to fight a crap magnet, you just want to get to the bottom of their attitude. Sometimes crap magnets are a symptom of a bigger workplace issue.3 – Encourage your team not to enable crap magnets. The key to high performing workplaces starts with communication, trust, and emotional intelligence. Open the lines of communication to find out exactly why someone feels so sour about their work situation. Open communication builds an environment of trust. Show your team that you trust them enough to not indulge “crap magnet” behavior.Want to work help companies deal with crap magnets? 360 Solutions has the leadership development tools and training you need to start, build, and run your own leadership development company.
