A podcast exclusive and a little something different here to change up the pace. I chat for almost two hours with my friend Will about the big ideas that Star Trek: The Next Generation failed to follow through on. Hey Dungeon Masters, I'm checking in with a quick DM Tips video about being transparent with your table about how you make decisions and adjudicate situations in your D&D or other RPG game. It's never a bad idea to let your players know how situations will play out mechanically-- not what will happen-- but what sorts of results are in play and how those results will be calculated. An educated party is the most capable of making informed decisions and less likely to be aggravated by outcomes that they understand. If you don't do this already, give it a try!

Hey Dungeon Masters, warlock patrons are wonderful entities to pull into your Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, as full blown BBEGs or secondary villains, allies, or even just color. But before you pull the trigger on building your campaign elements around these entities, do one thing first: talk to your Warlock player! Not every Warlock player will be as excited or even on board at all with these decisions. Because a patron is so intricately and intimately connected to both the mechanical and fictional powers of a character, the player playing that character deserves some say in if and how these elements are engaged with. Have that conversation! It's the right thing to do.

Another busy week for me outside gaming but I found a few minutes to talk about something that's been on my mind recently: the concept that the DM is resonsible for the players' fun. I don't think they are, at least not directly and definitely not solely. I picked up Wizards of the Coast's Fifth Edition Dungeons & Dragons supplement, "Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft," over the weekend. Having given it an initial read, I think it might be my favorite 5E supplement. Why? It provides conceptual, mostly system agnostic tools, for creating and developing horror settings, such as Ravenloft, that I think can be leveraged as a powerful general tool for thinking about and implementing BBEGs, whether you're running 5E, OSR, or a different system altogether.
