Going Above and Beyond with Character Creation on Disney's Galactic Starcruiser

We were thrilled to be able to interview Mike Celestino, the host of the "Who's The Bossk" podcast and the writer/director/star of the "Antiquities: A Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Story" web series from Laughingplace.com. Mike is also the lead Southern California reporter & editorial director of Star Wars content for Laughingplace.com
Mike shared several insights from his character creation process, the story of how he created his web series, and many other fun stories. We truly had a blast talking to him.
Mike went above and beyond with his character creation. In addition to creating a character for his voyage, he also wrote and published a backstory & created a prequel narrative YouTube video about his character. Cast members onboard the Halcyon were able to view this material and actually incorporated into his interactions with him. This gave him a very special experience that he shared about with us.
You can find Mike's web series on the Laughingplace YouTube channel. Part One & Five don't have any spoilers but the other episodes document his Galactic Starcruiser voyage so beware of spoilers if you're trying to stay pure!
There is a tiny bit of echo in the beginning of the podcast but it clears up by about 2-3 minutes in.

What Is It Like For An Immersive Story Teller To Go On Disney's Galactic Starcruiser? - ABRIDGED

Our guest today is Nick Tierce, a narrative designer who has been playing in the world of immersive narrative for the past decade. His latest project is Hollow Medium, a podcast and multimedia project over at https://www.hollowmedium.com.
Nick was a pioneer player of Disney's early experiments in immersive storytelling such The Optimist, an alternate reality game (ARG) tied to the film Tomorrowland, and Legends of Frontierland at Disneyland. Check out this prediction that Nick made in 2014 as Legends of Frontierland was winding down:
"If I may be so bold as to project speculation decades down the road, I can imagine a future where — rather than grafting these experiences onto existing locations — original themed environments will be constructed to exclusively house this type of open, immersive, exploratory story world."
Luckily for us, we didn't have to wait long for Nicks speculation to become reality. The Galactic Starcruiser is the end product of these experiments. We were able to chat with Nick about these and many other subjects. He is an expert on the subject and we learned a ton.

How Could Disney Improve The Onboarding Process for the Galactic Starcruiser?

On our recent second voyage aboard Disney's Galactic Starcruiser, we spoke with one couple who had a great time but missed a fair amount of the interactive experiences aboard the ship. This led us to wonder - could Disney improve the process of "onboarding" folks to the experience and the alternate universe aboard the ship?
When we thought of this topic, we quickly realized that there was no one better to talk to about this than immersive designer Nick Tierce. We spoke with Nick not only about how Disney can make improvements but also learned about other immersive/interactive experiences like "Sleep No More", Delusion, Ghost Town Alive at Knott's Berry Farm, and the various Meow Wolf installations & how the creators of these experiences bring people into their worlds of wonder.

The Emotional Side Effects of Starcruising

There can be little question - especially for folks who have been passengers onboard the Halcyon - that Disney's Galactic Starcruiser voyage is truly a work of art. Accordingly, like any other great work of art, the experience is designed to evoke strong feelings.
However, because experiencing the voyage is 100% interactive and not passive like watching a movie or TV show or reading a book, the emotions it elicits can be significantly more powerful - both during and after a trip aboard the Halcyon.
We invited former guest Jen Catania of Jen Eyre Cosplay to come discuss these feelings with us and how the Imagineering & LARP wizards at Disney have crafted the experience with these emotional journeys in mind. Our December Sublight Circle

Here's a fun fact. A group of 'Heroes of the Halcyon' listeners is referred to as a 'haul' . . . and boy do we have a haul of HOTH heads for this excellent Sublight Circle episode!
We brought on several of our new besties to chat about Disney's Galactic Starcruiser and it was super fun. These Sublight Circle episodes are literally like sitting around the fire . . . well, the space fire, I guess . . . and sharing stories of our adventures aboard the Halcyon. We focused in on the experiences these folks had and were amazed at the diversity of stories that were told - - from dentists onboard studying the "Way of the Floss" to solo dinners with Sandro to fun time with kids or parents who came along.

Exploring Disney's Galactic Starcruiser through Fan Fiction

There's a world of stories out there that you're probably not aware of. It is a world where characters that you know from fiction are having adventures just on the other side of what you're used to. In this world, stories continue past the edge of the page or the end of the movie and characters find new lives beyond what they are confined to in their original works. This - of course...since you read the title of the episode...is fan fiction.
Since the Galactic Starcruiser is filled with memorable characters, it was only a matter of time until folks found inspiration to create their own tales with these characters and find out what happens in the moments between moments aboard the ship or the early days of the characters before they stepped foot on the Halcyon.
We spoke with five authors of some truly excellent fan fiction stories in the Galactic Starcruiser universe and learned about what inspired them to create their tales. What Is Like To Be A Technician Or Crew Member Aboard Disney's Galactic Starcruiser? (Rebroadcast)

This week, due to the necessities of life in general, we were not able to record an entire new episode. Instead, we are dipping into the archives to replay a couple of our favorite interviews about what is like "behind the scenes" of Disney's Galactic Starcruiser.
The first interview is with Mike Ehmcke of Wookie Radio. Mike has worked as an AV technician in Entertainment for the wizards at Disney for nearly 25 years. He was a member of the opening crew onboard the Halcyon for the first few voyages of the Galactic Starcruiser. He shared stories of his interest in Star Wars, his time working aboard the ship, and his time with Disney.
The second chat is with Jey - the Crucial Crew Member! Jey works aboard the Galactic Starcruiser as a crew member. We met Jey on Twitter a year ago after our first voyage and were thrilled to be able to chat with him for some info on what it is like to contribute to this amazing experience. Jey's passion for the Halcyon and his work shines through and it was a blast to chat with him.

Ryan is also one of the co-hosts of the long running iamGEEK podcast.

The Emotional Side Effects of Starcruising (Rebroadcast)

As this episode releases on May 5th, the heroes will be disembarking from May The Fourth 2023 voyage on the Halcyon. As a result, we're releasing a classic episode from our archives about an appropriate topic - LARP "drop". This term refers to the post-voyage withdrawal that several people report feeling with they leave their Galactic Starcruiser voyage.
There can be little question - especially for folks who have been passengers onboard the Halcyon - that Disney's Galactic Starcruiser voyage is truly a work of art. Accordingly, like any other great work of art, the experience is designed to evoke strong feelings.
However, because experiencing the voyage is 100% interactive and not passive like watching a movie or TV show or reading a book, the emotions it elicits can be significantly more powerful - both during and after a trip aboard the Halcyon.
We invited former guest Jen Catania of Jen Eyre Cosplay to come discuss these feelings with us and how the Imagineering & LARP wizards at Disney have crafted the experience with these emotional journeys in mind. Last week, we were lucky enough to join the May the Fourth 2023 Galactic Starcruiser voyage. We had an amazing time and were pumped to come tell you all about it when we realized that it would be way more fun to hear about it from a group of fellow voyagers. However, due to scheduling challenges caused by the unfortunate reality of real life - - versus space life - - our only recording time was the Sunday night following our trip. This was not enough time to get the gang together so next week, we'll be telling you all about the recent voyage.
In this episode, we share details about the party we got to throw the night before the voyage. . . a party with 80 of our new closest friends! It was an amazing night and so much fun. We hope to convey that sense of fun and what the evening meant to us here.

We didn't watch the whole video - - just the very beginning when Kitra meets Ouanni - - and because we trusted them completely, we knew from the very first moment that Kitra was wide-eyed at meeting a Rodian face-to-face, we knew we were in for an amazing experience. We've made room in our lives - and sold so many things - in order to go more than once. However, our guest, David Schewitz, puts even us to shame. David has been a passenger aboard the Halcyon - both with family as well as solo - nine times and will be taking his tenth voyage at the end of September 2023. We were very excited to talk to him and compare notes about what made Galactic Starcruiser a place he had to return to.

As a longtime Star Wars fan and member of the 501st and the Rebel Legion costuming groups, Taylor was certainly inclined to enjoy his time aboard the Halcyon. Looking at our body of work in this podcast, we were stunned to see that we didn't really cover this topic - - what IS the Starcruiser to us?
We were joined in this episode by our friend Chris! We met Chris at the first muster meetup and then were lucky enough to voyage with him on the May 4th, 2023 cruise. We also saw Chris at the second muster meetup.
Chris emailed us with an idea to dig into just what the Starcruiser is to each of us and how, as a simulation, it not only convinces us we're in space but also that we're a part of a galactic adventure like no other!

Brooke is a freelance journalist who writes about Disney, theme parks, and Star Wars. She has covered a wide variety of travel experiences in the parks but even early on during the Halcyon's all-too-brief lifespan, it was evident that she found the experience to be uniquely amazing. Brooke's coverage of the experience was among the first to really convey what magic the Lady H had in store for travelers and adventurers. It was a thrill to chat with her and reflect on all that this voyage meant to both her and to us.

Before Starcruiser . . . We Explore Disney's Adventurers Club!

What a treat this episode was to make! We were joined by Jeremiah Good of LaughingPlace.com, actor Robbie Pigott, and former Walt Disney Imagineer C. McNair Wilson to discuss one of Disney's first real immersive entertainment experiences - Adventurers Club!
For those who aren't aware, Disney launched several nightclubs in Pleasure Island, part of what is now Disney Springs. One of these was Adventurers Club, a wild place where visitors were brought back to the 1930's and regaled by an evening of songs, stories and improvisational theater. The club was open from 1989 to 2008 and is still beloved to this day.
McNair Wilson was involved in the creation of Adventurers Club. Robbie played a number of roles in the show. Jeremiah was a fan and gave us a great perspective of what being an audience member was like.

A Galactic Casting Call - Fan Casting Galactic Starcruiser:The Motion Picture
