Ever thought about factoring in rising average summer temperatures into your planting scheme/garden design?? Tune in to listen to Casey and I discuss the reality of gardening in a drier climate. Man-made climate change is here to stay and it effects Perth gardeners in ways that might surprise you. Sticking to planting local/endemic plants in your garden will pay huge dividends in a decade as they're naturally adapted to low-rainfall requirements, plus our native birds and fauna will appreciate it!

Who's ever eaten a finger lime, quandong or Davidson's plum???
Ripper of an ep incoming! No Casey again this time unfortunately, but Sam had a ball interviewing Mark Tucek of TUCKERBUSH. Mark is responsible for developing one of the best commercially available range of Australian bush tucker plants in WA. Mark was kind enough to bring about 15 of his plants into the studio for Sam to sample. Sam decided that his new favourite bush food was "Muntries" (Kunsea pomifera) and that it took the lead from his previous fave of the midyim berry or Austromyrtus dulcis. In addition to the delicious muntries, Sammy also tried native river mint, cinnamon myrtle, native thyme, native basil, coastal pigface.
Why not hit mark up and replace your lemons and apples with Australian native Lemon myrtles, midyim berries and Finger limes.

Sam and Case are back with a new episode about a very specific beetle - Polyphagous shot-hole borer; A chewing "pest" species of beetle that has been very selfishly depriving Casey of sleep lately. This inconspicuous little insect is causing all sorts of havoc around Perth at the moment, burrowing into every species of tree it can get it chewing mouthparts into, including heritage trees around the metro.
Have a listen to this one to familiarise yourself with this new and unwelcome arrival that has already caused 8+ 100 year old trees to be removed by the council around Lake Claremont recently.

KC schooled Sam about the Koppen climate classification system on this one. Keen gardeners everywhere should take the time to learn the nuances of climate classification with the Koppen system. Why you might ask? Well, by understanding climate classification, you can build out the main bedrock of your garden designs with superbly well-adapted species of plants; saving yourself a tonne of time, money and resources in the process. For example, once you understand that Perth experiences a CLASSIC Mediterranean climate, with long dry summers and short wet winters (such as greece and portugal) You may be inclined to plant hedges such as dwarf olives and caper bushes, rather than rhododendrons and azaleas. Great to think about!
ROBERT FINNIE - Amazing designer who bases his designs on the Koppen classification system. Robert Finnie Design

Have a listen to this cracker of a pod with Trent Baljeu - MD of DSATCO mulch - One of WA's best known family-owned garden businesses. Lupin is the most well-known of their 5-product range. It is 100% organic and so rich in nitrogen that it can virtually replace a synthetic nitrogen feed for your kitchen gardens. We also spoke for a while about the agricultural history of Wongan hills, where dsatco HQ is located- might be a good listen for all the farmers and ex-farmers that listen to HYE.

Diago cultivates choice mushroom varieties on his business premises in Morley, pumping out grow-boxes of predominantly Lions mane and oyster mushrooms, just to name a few. Diago's wonder and enthusiasm for all things fungi is contagious and in addition to the edible varieties, we found ourselves talking about many other wondrous facets of fungi, including the cancer-fighting power of Turkeytails and the cognitive benefits of consuming lion's mane fungus.

GARDEN NERDS! EXTREMELY special podcast dropped, for your listening pleasure. A whole day of chats with Sam and the absolute who's who of gardening and horticulture in Australia. I feel insanely lucky.
This day was about 4 weeks in the making and was somehow simultaneously the best and most stressful experience of the year.
I will have to go into detail about the lead-up to the festival in another pod, but the actual Sunday exceeded absolutely every expectation and Andrew and Mandy hit it out of the park, as usual.
Enjoy these chats with Millie Ross, Derryn Thorpe, Diego Oliveira, Phil Dudman and other local garden legends!

Had Wade Willcocks from Wandering distillery into the studio for a fascinating chat about all things gin. Wade is responsible for creating an award-winning selection of WA-produced gins with ultra-unique flavours sourced from the Australian bush, such as the citrussy taste of Lemon myrtle and the savoury tones of native river mint and native thyme. The foodies will get a kick out of listening to Wade and his story. Also check out the podcast from earlier this year featuring Wade's mate Mark Tucek of TUCKERBUSH to get a full sense of the bush tucker plant species that Wade is using in his gins.

Placed around the stems of young plants; TREE RINGS are a brilliant way to provide newly planted shrubs and trees with a drip-feed of valuable nutrients over the course of up to a year. They come in three different sizes and are made from an infinitely renewable, organic materials.

New pod alert! It was amazing to chat to Permaculture legend and Gardening Australia presenter - Hannah Moloney. We nerded out on growing food in cold climates, community-spirited action to foster climate hope and her recent month of busily promoting her brand-new book: Good life growing, available now at all good bookstores around Australia and online.
This is still unreal to me that I have this podcast vehicle to connect to such bright and world-changing agents like Hannah. I want to thank each and every person who has ever listened to a HYE podcast. For what it's worth, your interest in these pod episodes has changed my life. Love you all.
Tony from Think green Landscapes and Waterscapes was kind enough to drop in for a chat about natural swimming pool construction.
Tony is one of the few certified Aquascaping contractors operating in Perth. Check out his stunning creations on Facebook and Instagram to get a sense of what is achievable in a Perth backyard when it comes to Pond gardens, waterfalls and natural streams.
David Mcmahon is the senior head tour guide at VentureNorth Australia, an award-winning tourism company, offering punters the opportunity to experience the wild foods and terrain of Arnhem land, the northwest and Kimberly region of Australia.
David spends most of his time out bush in the NT, spreading his love of the Aussie plants and animals to anyone that cares to listen. As an ex adelaide-chef, he also knows a thing or two about how to work with our native bush foods, which he enjoys preparing and offering to his tour guests.
David is also a very keen fan of ethnobotany and geology, which is reflected on on his awesome instagram page @davidmcmahonaustralia.
Since the early 1980's, Charles has been instrumental in popularising the "no-dig" style of gardening, beliveving that the secret to ultimate yield when it comes to growing your own food is to leave the soil minimally disturbed or unmolested.
Charles is cambridge-educated, holding a degree in geography, yet he has never pursued a career in academia, instead, he has only ever wanted to work with the land, having spent the last 40 years building the productive capacity of market gardens in a number of different countries and regions.
It's literally impossible to sum up what this man has done for gardening, i just feel honoured that he's taken the time to talk to me about his rich life, spent unlocking the secrets of garden yield using a minimally-disruptive and even soil-regenerative approach of no-dig.
If you need to know anything more about the amazing Charles, give him a google or follow him on instagram at charles_dowding.

See you in 2024. Herb your enthusiasm podcast and friends.
Episode #59 Herb your enthusiasm. Today's guest is ex-JRE guest; Will Harris of Bluffton, Georgia in the states..
Will is a 4th generation cattle farmer and current owner of white oak pastures, which has been owned by his family since 1866.
Across it's long history, white oak pastures has gone through many iterations. Upon inheriting his farm as a young man, will operated the farm in alignment with an industrial model of farming, utilising tonnes of Petro-chemical fertiliser, heavy chemical spray regimes to control weeds and "problem organisms" as well as intensive feed-lot operations and heavy anti-biotic regimens for his livestock.
As you'll hear in the podcast, a single brief but powerful moment in time one afternoon, lead him to reconsider the path he was going down with respect to the "kill and control" style of farming he had become accustomed to on the farm. following this personal realisation- at great financial expense, will began to transition away from a typical industrial model of farming and towards am ecological/regenerative model, and one that honoured and respected life in all its forms and the relationships between them.
20 years later and white oak pastures is now a world leader in profitable, sustainable farming and one of the few sustainable regenerative farms in his state. the multiple 10's of inches of rich, dark top soil that white oaks has created since moving to a regenerative model is something to behold and instead of spending his time figuring out how to kill organisms, will now thinks about the best ways to keep things alive.

This podcast episode, Sammy will be featuring Australian Entrepeneur; Cedar Anderson, the co-inventor of the FlowHive.
Flowhive is an innovative new bee-hive system that has revolutionised home-bee keeping. From the outside, Flow Hives look like a regular commercial beehive, that is, the traditional "wooden box" containing multiple frames which support the bees as they create their honeycomb. In these traditional beehives, when the honey is ready for harvest. the frames are taken out and spun in a centrifuge system to extract honey.
Now, enter FLOW Hives. Flow hives feature an ingenious system of pre-inserted, pre-molded frames made up of hundreds of individual hexagonal cells which mimic a natural honeycomb structure. Once the bees are introduced, they then discover these cells, fill them with honey.
When all the cells are filled, the owner of the FlowHive can then turn a special key to fracture each of the cells to releasing all the honey at once. The honey then slowly flows out of a tap and into glass collection jars. After collection the special key it turned again, re-setting the molds to their original position, to be filled with honey once again.
This Ingenious and elegant re-imagining of a beehive eliminates the otherwise messy, time-consuming and sometimes dangerous process of honey extraction.
With a FlowHive, there is next to no need to disturb, then pacify your bees and no need to use a centrifuge before you can enjoy the fruits of your bees' labour.
As you'll hear, FlowHive is one of the most significant business success stories to come out of the Northern Rivers region in recent years.
So, thanks friends and enjoy this podcast with Cedar Anderson of Byron Bay.
