As teachers, we tend to put our own wellbeing on the back burner because we are so busy with planning, marking, running clubs and intervention sessions, and working so hard to ensure that our students all make progress. This is because we are either too invested in our students and give them our all, or we have performance management targets to meet that we can not risk falling short of achieving.

Generally, both of these reasons are why we forget about our own wellbeing, and then on top of this, a lot of us have families that we are also trying to do what we can for, but who inevitably end up taking the brunt of our stress.

We can implement strategies to help us improve our work-life balance so we put ourselves first and our students can then get the best version of us, which is what they need to succeed.

Consistency. A term you will hear throughout your teaching career because without consistency nothing sticks. Unfortunately, teachers can make it difficult for other teachers when they do not follow through with the behaviour policy or implement it effectively enough. This can lead to behaviour issues spilling in to other teachers' lessons and can make it 10x harder for the teacher to manage their classes. All staff in a school must adopt the same culture for behaviour to change. This is why it is so important to follow the school's behaviour policy and implement it effectively every lesson. There are some school's however that do not have an effective behaviour policy. My school's behaviour policy wasn't haven't much of an effect on our students at the time until about 10 years into my time at the school. In these circumstances, it is down to the teacher to develop their own effective behaviour system for their lessons to gain the respect they need from their students and create the positive learning environment their students need and deserve.

A lot of employers are looking for teachers who know their way around google drive and google classroom, and are skilled with the use of IT in lessons. Being told by the Executive Head that my lesson wasn’t very good was, at the time, embarrassing and frustrating. We have all had days when our lessons haven't been very good, but to have one during an observation by the most senior person in the school when I had been teaching for 10 years, felt like all my hard work had been undone in seconds.

In this episode I talk about my observation and what I did next as a result of the feedback given. Although I was initially annoyed, he was a very good Executive Head, and I became a much better teacher as a result of his leadership.

Teaching is a hard profession, so any little thing that can make a teacher’s life just that little bit better is worth its weight in gold! In this episode, I talk about the little life hacks that I have used as a teacher to help save me time and help me provide better support for my students in lessons, so that your day to day teaching life can also be made just that little bit easier.

Dealing with them quickly, and creating a positive relationship with your students going forward, in order to reduce the likelihood of that behaviour reoccurring.
