24 Oct 2022 | #117 Lori Mihalich-Levin | How to navigate parenthood in the workplace | 00:30:35
Are you a working parent? Struggling with confidence after returning to work? Lori Mihalich-Levin, founder and CEO of mindful return and author of the book “Back to work after baby”, highlights the additional, career-critical skills that we acquire through parenthood, and how these skills can make us better leaders. Lori discusses the importance of employers not making assumptions about what a person may feel capable of once they have returned to work, as well as normalising conversations about how one may be feeling. Moreover, offering parental leave in a gender-neutral way helps to emphasise the humanity of taking parental leave. Returning to work after parental leave is a long transition period, with many challenges along the way, and Lori provides excellent guidance on ways to personally face these challenges, as well as ways that employers can help working parents thrive. 18 Apr 2022 | #91 Chris Howard | How to perform at your best when you feel your worst | 00:59:30
Today I am interviewing British adventurer Chris Howard.
"Our mantra went out the window when we left port, and it became very scary, but we used that fear." Extreme endurance adventurer and father of three, Chris Howard chats about some of his most recent adventures, including rowing the Atlantic and walking the coast of Great Britain (a marathon a day for 450 consecutive days). He talks about how to perform at your best when you feel your worst, and how to use negativity to fuel success. Chris was able to fund raise for Children in Need during his coast walk, knowing that disadvantaged and vulnerable children around the UK became even more at risk and often in danger during the lockdowns (childhood deprivation is an issue that Chris has first hand knowledge of from his own childhood). Raising significant amounts of money for charity to support children became a source of inspiration during his walk. Chris explores other driving forces behind extreme challenges, and of how not to let the excuses of today become the regrets of tomorrow. Chris had undertaken adventures as a teenager (including walking 2800 miles on the islands along the west coast of Thailand), and it was whilst at work one day he realised, "I shouldn't have been doing this every day, I should have been doing that!" He is about to embark on rowing round the coast of Great Britain, along with publishing his book about walking around the coastline. 10 Jul 2022 | #103 Dr Rebecca Williams | How to empower and equip your team to manage their own stress | 00:34:23
How to empower and equip your team to manage their own stress. As a GP of 20 years, Rebecca saw a multitude of variations of the harm caused by stress, with most people coming to her at crisis point, when it was hard to disentangle what might be causing the physical and mental health symptoms she was presented with. This led Rebecca to start her own business, Williams Stress Management. She now helps people manage their own stress levels by recognising symptoms and putting in effective boundaries. Rebecca explains how some physiological systems are suppressed when we're under acute or chronic stress, such as the immune system, gut health, and sexual and reproductive health.. Chronic stress can also affect processes in the brain leading to mental health issues. Organisations would benefit from education within the workplace to help people identify potential stressors in their lives, and develop strategies to manage this, understanding how stress might be affecting them physically, mentally and emotionally. Employees experiencing acute or chronic stress have a prefrontal cortex which is less active, leading them to be less able to concentrate and more prone to memory lapses, as well as having difficulties making decisions and planning. This can lead to more anxiety, loss of confidence, and a general downward spiral ensues. Rebecca explains simple tools to help us manage our own stress, work more productively, and generally enjoy life more. 16 Jan 2023 | Tracy Aust | How to give meaning and life to your organisation’s values | 00:30:07
Values and principles are important elements of any organisation and should be rooted in the decisions we make as leaders, but how do we make sure that they are? Tracy Aust, the Principal of West Thames College, discusses her insight into the values that she keeps at the forefront of her mind when making decisions. Tracy explains the importance of role-modelling the values and principles of your organisation when making decisions, in order to create a culture in which these values are practised and felt. One way this can be done is by making decisions transparently, with a clear decision-making process outlined to all of your team that incorporates your values. Feedback and reflection on the decision-making process, or final decision, is important and allows those you work with to see how the way you act as a leader is aligned with the organisation’s values and principles. 31 Aug 2022 | #109 Sally Newall | How to use challenging times to create business innovation | 00:28:02
Simply Icecream founder and owner Sally Newell talks about how she successfully navigated her business through the pandemic, despite losing 70% of her customers. Sally explains how she had open and honest conversations with staff about the financial implications of covid, and maintained regular contact with them, whilst they were on furlough. Sally's 4 adult children moved back home and helped with the day to day running of the business, pulling together as a family to make icecream during the pandemic. In order to retain staff post pandemic, and meet new requests for greater flexibility post lockdown and furlough, Sally brought in two Production Managers and two new shift patterns to balance people's work preferences and keep the business moving forward. Sally explains how she has always run 2-3 businesses at a time, and lived life at 100mph. She said lockdown gave her thinking space, and she implemented a franchise distribution, launched a vegan range, and dog icecream - all ideas that she previously hadn't had the time to put into action. Sally continues to navigate the unknown waters of business life post-Brexit, post-covid, the impact of the war in the Ukraine, the fuel crisis, and the general rising cost of living. She has seen dairy prices almost double, and explains how she manages to keep her own business going, without doubling her own prices. 29 May 2023 | Joshua Purvis | What is the benefit of creating a culture of curiosity in an organisation? | 00:32:05
From asking hundreds of questions a day as a child, to drastically less as an adult, we all become less curious as we get older. So, what is the benefit of creating a culture of curiosity in an organisation? Today, Josh Purvis, co-founder and chief product officer at Assembly, explores curiosity, listening to real problems and how to express counter-opinions effectively. Josh emphasises the importance of not only incentivising or promoting the wins but also the losses. Punishing losses will diminish the ability of people to experiment and be curious. Leading in this way limits innovation, creates fear-led leadership and ultimately results in more losses. Increasing the rate at which you experiment can help create a culture of curiosity. 06 Feb 2023 | Paul Barber OBE | How to identify and develop sustainable talent | 00:31:47
Hear Paul Barber, CEO and deputy chairman of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, discuss how he goes about identifying and developing sustainable talent. Paul highlights how the foundation of acquiring sustainable talent lies within how the organisation’s vision and values align with the potential employee, and how advancing recruitment techniques can support this. From there, regular appraisals can be set up for continuous feedback and development, as well as training and development programmes, and succession planning programmes. Paul emphasises the importance of acting with integrity, thus “inspiring but with honesty”. In the context of the Brighton and Hove football academy, the majority of recruited talent will not make it into the professional football world. Paul says how this way of educating gives all talent the inspiration and confidence to develop, but that being honest provides them with a healthy tolerance for failure, thus preparing them for working life beyond the football academy. 06 Dec 2021 | #69 Michelle Seiler Tucker | How to scale your business with your people | 00:31:40
Today I am interviewing Michelle Seiler Tucker who is Founder and President of Seiler Tucker.
Michelle shares her wisdom of many years of advising and helping to scale and sell businesses. Michelle has released a new book called Exit Rich with 6 P's method (#1 People, #2 Product, #3 Process, #4 Proprietary, #5 Patrons and #6 Profit) we focused on People & Product in this episode. Within people is to ensure that you have all the right people in the right roles, not only for now but have a future view as well. You can’t sell a business if it’s 100% dependent on you. Business owners and leaders need to focus on their strengths, hire out their weaknesses, and focus on the right area. The goal is to grow a business that can be run by the people around you. Product is all about making sure you continually innovate and market your business, don't be a Blockbuster and be complacent, always look for ways to meeting the needs of your customer or clients. Create a mindset in the business for innovation, of pushing the boundaries, pushing so much that you fail.

24 Apr 2023 | John Clark | Lessons learnt about resilience throughout his 48-day marathon challenge | 00:44:49
48 marathons, in 48 days, in 48 of England’s counties. John Clark, also two times winner of Britain’s Natural Strongest Man, shares the lessons he has learned about resilience throughout his 48-day marathon challenge. John highlights how resilience is not always just about having a “get up and go” attitude but also about learning, and recognising the things that are controllable, and the things that are not. Facing many obstacles throughout the 48 marathons, including injuries, fainting, fatigue, and moments of doubt, John emphasises how easy and justifiable it would have been to give up and stop. However, his resilient mindset urged him to find a strategy to prevent these challenges from occurring again, rather than finding a reason to stop. By focusing on only trying to control the controllable, John truly demonstrates what resilience is. 07 Feb 2022 | #81 Lucy Fitzgerald | Why should leaders care about their people? | 00:30:01
Today I am interviewing Lucy Fitzgerald who is the CEO & Founder of Fitzgerald HR. Today's episode starts the a series on "HR challenges faced by SME's", where I will be interviewing HR experts on key topics to help SME organisations.
According to Breathe (HR software platform), 68% of business owners have said that they have seen an increase in the mental health, anxiety and depression in their employees in the last few years, based on this we need to have the people and a well-being strategy at the heart of the business. Lucy went on to share that having a focus on well-being will increase productivity, employee engagement which leads to discretionary effort and thereby increase in profits, so there are tangible reasons for caring about your people. Lucy also shared that you don't need a dedicated HR expert in the business but someone who is a champion of the people and can use key people strategies like Employee Assistance Programs, engaging your employees to gain insights of what they need. And in terms of an overall strategy, if it can encompass the Physical, Emotional, Financial and Social aspects of the people, this can be used as guide for the overall well-being of the people.

In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we welcome Dr. Laura Gabayan to discuss resilience through the lens of her Common Wisdom study. Inspired by her struggle with chronic Lyme disease and the lack of thinking outside the box during this time, Dr. Gabayan interviewed wise individuals to uncover the eight key elements of wisdom. As we delve into the eight key elements of wisdom, Dr. Gabayan shares how resilience is not just about enduring hardship but about shifting perspective—from “Why me?” to “Why not me?”. Many of the wise individuals she interviewed in her study had faced significant life challenges but moved forward with a sense of peace and kindness toward themselves. She emphasises that kindness is a strength, humility is a skill, and living in faith over fear fosters resilience. As the conversation continues, we discuss how leaders can cultivate wisdom by serving as role models, the importance of self-awareness in developing humility, and how younger generations can nurture wisdom in an era that often prioritises ego over growth. 10 Oct 2022 | #115 Kevin Kehoe | From entrepreneur to cancer survivor - lessons in doing extraordinary things | 00:31:28
Kevin Kehoe is an entrepreneur and cancer survivor; co-founder of Aspire Software, and author of “One Hit Wonder - real life adventures of an average guy”. As the book highlights, ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
During 30 years of consultancy work in landscape management, construction in snow and ice, Kevin saw a need for new software in these industries – current software lacked the ability to give the contractor everyday insight. He co-founded Aspire Software. Kevin explains 3 tips he would give someone about to start up a business: 1) People – the team you are going into business with are the most important – it’s essentially like a marriage – choose wisely! 2) Capital – most people underestimate how much they need. 3) Hours – don’t underestimate how much time setting up a business will take, and the impact this will have on your family etc. How would you cope with starting a business and then almost immediately going through a traumatic life event (in Kevin’s case, incurable cancer)? “Cancer is a brutal unforgiving disease – just when you think you’ve made progress, it kicks you back in the teeth.” Has having cancer changed your perspective on life and business? “It’s turned me into a hugger – I tell people I love them!” Kevin explains his perspective on resilience – “From a business angle, resilience is everything, especially in relation to start-ups. It is essential, especially early on. If you get the plumbing and wiring right at the beginning – the right people, the right service model etc., you don’t have to tear down the house further down the line.” Resilience can be about taking things a day at a time, which is something you really learn, living with cancer. It’s not all about grit, determination and gung-ho – that’s not resilience. Sometimes it’s just getting through the day, working through the tasks you’ve planned for that day. One manageable step at a time.
Note: Sadly, Kevin Kehoe recently passed from his 8.5 yr battle with Stage 4 cancer. This interview is being posted as a tribute to Kevin. In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we are joined by Mark Sampson as we explore how businesses can maintain their team spirit and culture during periods of rapid growth. Mark reflects on his own journey and explains that as companies scale, it’s easy to lose sight of the core elements that made them successful and stand out in the first place. To prevent this, Mark shares how leaders must focus on their "CORE"— Customer, Origin, Reason, and Ethos. Mark shares practical strategies for engaging your CORE within your team, including how to discover your origin story, as this isn’t something that is created, but rather discovered and nurtured. We touch on how we can maintain these core values and incorporate them into daily actions, even with hybrid working teams, helping to build a strong culture that can endure growth. 30 May 2022 | #97 Patrick Aylward | How to have leadership and business impact through collaboration | 00:31:45
Intent on changing the way people interact, author Patrick Aylward is having a global impact with his ideas on collaboration. He shares how collaboration leads to opportunities and innovation; whereas mediation, debate and conflict resolution close down this potential to innovate and grow. Where conflict resolution is inherently reactive, collaboration is proactive.
Patrick is a former litigation lawyer, and author of The Collaborative Path. He defines collaboration as the pursuit of dual outcomes, creating solutions to situations and building stronger human relationships: "What's different in my approach to collaboration compared to conflict resolution or 'getting to yes' is that I address where conflict comes from, and what we can do to prevent it, whereas the field addresses what to do after conflict arises. Getting to 'yes' becomes about how to negotiate after negotiations have broken down. Conflict doesn't arise from differences, conflict arises from the fact that we use the debate model to discuss the differences."
Patrick talks about the importance of having a curious approach, rather than one of judgement, and to consider the opportunities that may be in the differences. He explains that perspectives are often presented as truth, which is not the case; and that debate slows innovation as it always favours the status quo. "We can't debate without being judgemental, in the same way we can't collaborate without being curious."

In this series Nancy and I tackle key leadership challenges on a weekly, these could be current to the context we are in, and some will be evergreen challenges. We wanted to share our two very different perspectives on solving these leadership challenges.
Today's episode was a healthy debate on whether women are performing better than men in leadership within the context of the pandemic. We explored stereotypes and unconscious bias along with creating two very different perspectives, that I'm sure will help you continue the debate in your head.

13 Dec 2021 | #70 Gillian Harwood | How to harness adversity for creative business building ideas | 00:32:44
Today I am interviewing Gillian Harwood who is the Co-Founder/Managing Director of United Workspace Ltd and Lewes Workspace Ltd.
Gillian Harwood’s career spans over 40 years. She was a pioneer of her time in the late 1970’s when she undertook the mammoth task of converting an abandoned Victorian bus factory, restoring and transforming it with flair and imagination into a successful business hub for small businesses; one of the first of its kind. It was a bold and courageous move and one that earned her ‘Business Woman of the Year Award’, presented to her by the late Margaret Thatcher.
Gillian shares how adversity created the opportunity for a business idea, it was the fact that her house was going to be repossessed by the bank, that the insight for 'bed sitters for businesses' (now known as co-working space) was created. And since the 1970's Gillian has gone on to create many more co-worker spaces across London and the south east, with the driving force to really help enable and empower new business to be established and grow. Recently she sold her Busworks co-working space business for £45m - a testament for her visionary leadership and entrepreneurship.

22 Jul 2022 | BOOST #12 | How to use visualisation to create success | 00:10:05
Welcome to this solo series called BOOST, the purpose is to give you little BOOST to your day, to further provide ways to create a thriving organisation.
Michael Phelps famously credits visualisation to his success in the 200m butterfly at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He won gold and set a world record despite not being able to see for the last 75m while water filled up his leaky goggles. You may be thinking, yeah I get it for elite sports but what has that got to do with the workplace. Well you can use visualisation whether for personal or business, the effect is just the same.
What is visualisation? In essence it is a mental rehearsal using all of your senses – see, feel, hear, taste and smell.
Why is visualisation Important? Visualisation is important because it helps to prepare and to teach you how to respond to a situation before it happens. It also helps you achieve your goals by conditioning your brain to see, hear, and feel the success in your mind.
How does it work? Visualisation will engage the reticular activating system (RAS)—a bundle of neurons that acts as your filtering system and helps you to determine what information is important vs. what is not important. The phrase ‘you get what you focus on’ is linked with the RAS, and the reason why goal setting works and is important, since you are setting your RAS to filter everything for the goal achievement.
Three types of visualisation There are 3 main types of visualization in performance psychology: outcome visualization, process visualization and clarity visualisation. I use all 3 types with my coaching clients where appropriate.
Clarity visualisation is when you look ahead to what you would like to see, hear and feel and then track back to find clarity of steps to get there. Outcome visualisation is when you imagine your end goal. For example, you see yourself winning and crossing the finishing line of a running race. Process visualisation is when you imagine each step it will take to get to your end goal. For example, you mentally rehearse yourself giving a presentation to an audience, going through the whole process of the event.
Does visualisation work? In essence yes, and there are lots of examples used in sport along with everyday business, but also there was an empirical study conducted by Dr. Blaslotto at the University of Chicago in 1996 on visualisation.
Dr. Blaslotto’s study was conducted by asking a group of students who had been randomly selected to take a series of basketball free-throws. The percentage of made free throws were tallied. The students were then divided into three groups and asked to perform three separate tasks over a 30 day period. – The first group was told not to touch a basketball for 30 days, no practicing or playing basketball whatsoever. – The second group was told to practice shooting free throws for a half hour a day for 30 days – The third group was to come to the gym every day for 30 days and spend a half hour with their eyes closed, simply visualizing hitting every free-throw.
After the 30 days all three groups were asked to come back and take the same number of free-throws they had in the beginning of the study. – The first group of students who did not practice at all showed no improvement – The second group had practiced every day and showed a 24% improvement – The third group however, the group which had simply visualized successful free-throws, showed a 23% improvement
Mental rehearsal (or visualisation) is powerful because the subconscious processes the experience as a real one (by firing those neurons that are responsible for skill acquisition), makes the person calmer and more adapted to stressful situations, and can speed up the learning process.
How do you mentally visualise? The process visualisation technique is a common one I use with my clients. Before you visualise, get yourself in a relaxed state, this can be done by sitting down, closing your eyes and taking 3 deep breaths in and out. Once you are relaxed, visualise the situation, for example speaking at an event in front of a audience. Mental visualise what you will see, the people, the venue, the stage etc. Then what you can hear, you speaking, the audience and other noises you may hear in the room. Then move onto how you will be feeling when you are speaking, what you can smell, has food been served and also what you can taste. Try to make the visualisation as vivid as possible, it helps if you have already been to the place before. Now visualise it all going well, using all the senses – see, hear, feel, smell and taste. Now think of number of scenarios where there might be some obstacles to your presentation, e.g. you get a dry mouth as you are speaking, the technology doesn’t work etc. Now visualise the plans to mitigate those things going wrong, the plan B’s, e.g. having a glass of water to drink if you get a dry mouth. I would suggest you spend around 5 minutes on this visualisation, and look to do it a few times prior to the event itself.
In summary, visualisation is a powerful way to prepare yourself for an event or situation before you even get there, along with gaining insights into what could be the obstacles that get in the way, which gives the opportunity to develop strategies to overcome those obstacles.

Today I am interviewing Kevyn Rustici who is a Strategic Human Capital Consultant for Gallagher.
Kevyn shared his insights and views on how HR leaders can help shape the future of work by truly focusing on the people doing the work, creating cultures focused on the emotional, mental, physical, and financial well-being of the individual. His approach is for HR leaders to use data and gain insights from this data. Having new information (People Data) available and utilising these insights will help to improve decision making, we will then use our gut, instinct and intuition less to make pivotal business decisions. Kevyn's idea is changing HR departments from a "cost center" to a "profit center" is not some crazy idea it's an evolution, a change of perspective and intention which will drive the necessary changes required in the new normal, because we aren't "Going Back to Normal."

20 Jun 2022 | #100 Corina Walsh | How to identify and support emerging leaders | 00:29:55
In this podcast Corina discusses how to identify and then support emerging and front line leaders. She prioritises "coach-ability" as the number one trait to look for when identify future leaders; and advises organisations to consider having two different leadership tracks - one for business/technical leadership, and one for people leadership. Corina advises companies to give any employee the chance to practice leadership skills in a low risk environment, and gives examples of this. New leaders need supporting in their role - knowing how to have a difficult conversation is a skill set that can be learned, and, like giving effective feedback, is something which a new leader can learn and practice in training. The managers of these new leaders also need to know (or to receive training on) how best to support the new leaders they are responsible for. Corina discusses how to create an environment within your organisation allowing and encouraging people to show emerging leadership skills or potential. 03 Jan 2022 | #72 Madelyn Dunlap | How to manage transitions for growth | 00:35:08
Today I am interviewing Madelyn Dunlap who is the Business Development Strategist for The Rewild Group.
Madelyn shared how to manage transitions in companies to create grow, and this phrase really sums it up "In times of transitions, in times of chaos, leaders need to focus on structure, clarity and focus". Structure was about creating boundaries and processes that instill certainty and enable employees to be guided in a positive way, not a fixed structure but a more fluid one. Focus, is about being absolutely aware of your priorities as a business, whether top line priorities or within each role off the company, and creating opportunities for them to be shared. And then finally clarity, which does link to focus, knowing what is important to focus on, what will make the greatest impact.

02 Dec 2020 | BOOST #6 | How to gain the right perspective for greater insight | 00:06:26
Welcome to this solo series called BOOST, the purpose is to give you little BOOST to your day, to further provide ways to create a thriving organisation.
Perspectives! Perspective is just a point of view. If we realise that it is only that, a point of view, it will really help us in our quest to understand others better. It may appear as the truth, but really it is only true to ourselves. So if we are to become effective and engaging leaders, we need to fully understand others and their point of view, this does not mean we have to agree, but get a fully picture of what might be the truth. So before you jump to conclusions on someone’s action/motive, I would pause and try to gain a few different perspectives/options to gain a fuller understanding. Often I use a NLP technique with my coaching clients called Perceptual Positioning, it is a vey effective way to gain different perspectives on a situation, especially in a conflict one. What advice would you give?

13 Jun 2022 | #99 Gillian Selby | Creating a service mindset to achieving sales growth | 00:34:12
Seeing sales in a new light: Ex global business director Gillian Selby talks about the impact of taking a collaborative approach to sales, and elevating your business as one unit, rather than seeing sales as a stand alone entity. She explores the value of having a service mindset approach, as opposed to a company seeing themselves as the experts and expecting clients to come to them. She explains the longer term value of wanting to be of service to people; going out and meeting them where they are; listening first to establish the needs they may have. This may mean a slightly slower take off in terms of sales, but will lead to much higher revenue and return. The cost of client acquisition is high, and Gillian looks at how a business can increase the sustainability of their client relationships, looking for a longer term investment in clients, rather than the "sales-driven" approach, which may be quicker but is less sustainable in terms of client relationships. The entire company needs to be included in this type of approach, and the sales team need to be involved in more than just selling. 22 Aug 2022 | #108 Shani Magosky | How to create impact as a leader | 00:30:43
At the end of your meeting/conversation, what do you want people to walk away saying? How do you want them to feel? How do you need to be, in order for others to leave your interaction feeling inspired and connected? Best selling author and founder of the Leaders Shift Project Shani Magosky discusses these questions in this latest podcast. Shani explains how people will remember how you made them feel, more than what you said. She advocates having a "to be" list, as well as a "to do" list - How do I want to show up? What mindset do I want to have when I'm communicating? Be intentional, plan to be enthusiastic, transparent and vulnerable in your communication. Today I am interviewing Amy Lynn Durham who is the CEO of "Create Magic At Work" and a U.C. Berkeley Certified Executive Coach.
Amy shared how to create magic at work with spiritual intelligence, although it is important to be holistic in our approach, since we have PQ (physical intelligence), IQ and EQ as well, and making sure that these areas are also growing and developing throughout our lives. These factors build upon each other, e.g. if you are physically tired this PQ deficit will have an impact on your leadership, so we need to make sure these are all in order too. She also shares the many skills we can develop for SQ, based on the definition by Cindy Wigglesworth, SQ is defined as the ability to behave with wisdom and compassion while maintaining inner and outer peace regardless of the situation.

09 May 2022 | #94 Louise Larkum | How to create a top down culture of mental well-being in your workplace | 00:33:29
Today I am interviewing Louise Larkum who is the Founder and Director at Mindcare Training. Deloitte's undertook an official independent review and found that for every £1 they had spent on mental health and well-being in the workplace, they received a £5 return. Join Louise Larkum as she discusses how to create a top down culture of mental well-being in your workplace. Louise explains how, as a leader, you can have effective conversations with employees to address mental health concerns. By carefully choosing the right environment at the right time, you can sensitively and specifically share your concerns, and give your employee the chance to be open about any current issues they may be facing - at the very least you are showing that you have noticed and you care. Louise discusses the importance of compassionate leadership, and shares facts such as 50% of people having an episode of depression do not go on to have any further episodes in their lives. A mental health diagnosis is usually for a period of time, not for life. 80% of employees taking extended time off due to mental ill health, including stress, do not return to the same workplace. It costs a baseline of £30,000 to re-recruit, therefore a proactive culture towards mental well-being can significantly benefit your business, and most importantly could have a life-changing impact on your employees. As Louise explains, the far-reaching results of having properly trained mental health first aiders in your business cannot be overstated. 28 Oct 2024 | Daryll Scott | Future-Focused Feedback: Driving High Performance Through Better Conversations | 00:31:59
In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we are joined by Daryll Scott as we explore how to drive high performance through effective, ongoing performance conversations. Daryll highlights the importance of consistency, advocating for feedback as a daily practice rather than an occasional event. Daryll explains that feedback should be future-focused, with conversations about tomorrow and not yesterday. We discuss how to cultivate such a culture where feedback is not something imposed on people but something they actively seek, allowing employees to focus on achieving their personal goals. For leaders having to conduct a formal performance review, Daryll shares how best to prepare—setting clear intentions, aligning realistic expectations, and understanding what motivates each person to ensure feedback is impactful. He also encourages recipients to approach feedback with an open, growth-oriented mindset to fully benefit from the conversation. 08 Aug 2022 | #106 Lisa Gable | How to successfully turn around a failing company | 00:28:40
Lisa Gable has been helping companies return from the brink for 30 years. She is a US advisor to Fortune 500 companies, a Wall Street journalist and USA Today bestseller. In this podcast Lisa explains how to spot the telltale signs of failure; how to navigate the challenges of restructuring a company; and most importantly, how to identify and focus on exactly what needs to be done. If you could wave a magic wand what would you want your company to look like? Lisa talks about how to conceptually burn your company to the ground and then build it back up again, to achieve that perfect vision of the future. Auditing and ranking current activities helps you to maintain a clear focus in order for your company to be successful, thriving and competitive. Lisa works with companies in very transparent and specific ways, consistently communicating and acknowledging any changes that may be making people feel uncomfortable. She takes lessons from Roman history - Caesar was known to regularly talk to his troops and listen to what they were saying; and the first President George HW Bush sent handwritten notes to staff to praise and acknowledge. Lisa has to make very tough and often unpopular decisions when working with companies, but ensures she consistently listens to and values her staff, in order to maintain relationships even with those who leave the company. This podcast will inform, challenge and inspire you in leading your team to build an even better version of your organisation. 11 Feb 2021 | BOOST #10 | Are your big goals demotivating you? Here are some tips to create that motivation again | 00:09:25
Welcome to this solo series called BOOST, the purpose is to give you little BOOST to your day, to further provide ways to create a thriving organisation.
Are your goals demotivating you?
Sometimes when we look out into the distanced at the goal we are trying to achieve, they can be overwhelming, and at times feel to big, and this can actually demotivate us. Now I know it is important to set stretching goals, that will accomplish much, but what do we do when they demotivate us. I was struck by this recently whilst running on the trails, and I looked ahead at a climb of about 250m, and suddenly felt exhausted and overwhelm by the sight of it trying to run up to the top. It was a route I had done many times and was part of the plan of the day.
Here are 4 ways to bring back the motivation:
1. Remember the experience and training that got you here right now 2. Breakdown the goal into bite size pieces, don't try and eat the whole elephant in one! 3. Visualise yourself completing the goal, what will you see, hear and feel? 4. Since you created the goal, then you can assure yourself that you will have all the resources within you to complete it
And finally give yourself some slack - It’s ok to slow the pace down, even if the timings slips, as long as you achieve the goal.

03 Feb 2025 | Aaron Hill | Former Special Forces Operative on Redefining Resilience Through Acceptance | 00:32:03
In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we explore resilience through the lens of acceptance with guest Aaron Hill. Drawing from his military background, Aaron shares how resilience is not just about endurance but also about learning, self-awareness, and accepting where you are in life. Aaron discusses how a lack of awareness often holds people back from true acceptance and how shifting one’s perception of resilience can be transformative. Aaron highlights the daily habits that have helped him build resilience, including asking for help, understanding what works best for him, and maintaining the basics consistently. Reflecting on his own journey, Aaron emphasises the importance of questioning and self-exploration in developing awareness. His key advice? Go back to the basics. Take the time to understand what you need to care for yourself, how that impacts those around you, and embrace resilience as an ongoing journey of learning and growth.
