23 Oct 2024107: Understanding Picky Eating vs Feeding Disorders Among Adolescents with Jaclyn Pederson00:40:26

Feeding Disorders (ARFID & PFD) are relatively new when compared to other more established and commonly understood eating disorders, so it can be difficult to find factual, up-to-date research-backed information and support. Plus, because it's not typically considered a teen disorder, it is overlooked, misdiagnosed or confused with an eating disorder such as Anorexia Nervosa.

In this week's episode of the Healthy Teen Life podcast I'm joined by Jaclyn Pederson, CEO of Feeding Matters, to discuss the intricacies of feeding disorders in adolescents.

In particular we cover the two often overlooked conditions of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD). Due to this lack of awareness, it's now becoming more clear these conditions don't just effect babies or young children, but in fact, may be present among adolescents and even adults who were never diagnosed.

If you're a teen, young adult, or a concerned parent who believes yourself or a family member to be a picky eater, you'll want to listen in.

The episode highlights the signs, symptoms and importance accurate diagnosis; treatment options and the multidisciplinary approach needed for effective treatment; the role of genetics; how to advocate for yourself or a loved one; how to navigate the complexities of these conditions; and where to access resources that provide guidance and support.

This is one of the most comprehensive episodes on Feeding Disorders for adolescents you can find.

14 Dec 2022The AAA Approach to Self-Care For Greater Success00:25:07

We're talking all about self-care and leveraging the AAA approach to getting self-care practices to work for you as a teen. It's much more than starting a morning routine or meditating daily. Going through the routines without an understanding of why or what they're doing for you ends up in quitting or not getting the results you want. The AAA approach changes that and keeps you on track.

02 Oct 2024104: From Global Warming to Cancer: The Impact of Animal-Based Foods with Vesanto Melina00:36:13

Climate change, and the noticeable environmental shifts we’re experiencing like rising temperatures, wild fires, and melting glacier ice, is a hot topic. We’re all concerned and seeking solutions. While the popular targets for reducing any further impact are the gasoline & fossil fuel industries, it will take a long time to shift our dependency and potentially at additional cost due to the energy sources that replace them. They’re not infallible either.

But there is another solution that can impact more quickly, and in a pretty significant way. It's animal-based foods. Sadly, this solution isn’t being covered by mainstream media.

Join me and my guest, Vesanto Melina as we discuss the environmental impact of animal product consumption and how we all can make small changes to have a net positive effect, not only on the health of our planet, but also ourselves and our families.

For more information on the episode, Vesanto, her books, and for resources mentioned in the episode check out the show notes.

In the episode we discuss:

06:55               Research Findings on Climate Change

12:48               Environmental Impact of Food Choices

20:05               Food and Our Health

If you're curious about the intricate relationship between agriculture, the environment, and our health join me and my guest Cory Davis, a professional agrologist, to explore how it all works and what it means for our future.

Building on last week's discussion with Vesanto Molina, Cory delves into environmental costs of food production, its impact on wildlife, and the quality of our food.

Listen in as we discuss how we as a society can address the challenges of balancing agricultural demands with environmental conservation and reflect on the broader implications of our dietary choices, considering the interconnectedness of health, the environment, and social justice.

This comprehensive conversation highlights how individual actions can contribute to the planet's health.

But what's most important is young people and families have the opportunity to become stewards of a more sustainable and humane future, through local advocacy and making informed consumer choices starting with what's on our plates.

12 Apr 20234 Secrets to Body and Self-Satisfaction Success00:31:24

When we're not satisfied with ourselves and what we believe other people think of us, it's easy to target our body, weight, size, features, or shape as a means to be more liked, accepted and appreciated. Problem is, they're superficial and don't define all that we are. Physical change overlooks all that you are on the inside. Physical change can be fleeting when pursued for all the wrong reasons and not deliver on the true results we desire.

In this episode, Leslie shares why we often focus on our bodies and skip over our deeper needs for fulfillment, connection, and satisfaction. Learn what needs to happen first to get to the root of those emotional and motivational needs before embarking on physical change. Our needs for connection, belonging, acceptance, value and self-worth, that diets and exercise don't address. When we uncover our true needs and address them is when we receive lasting, meaningful and satisfying success.

Metabolic health is essential for our overall health and well-being yet statistically, the vast majority of American's are not metabolically healthy. If you find yourself consistently worrying about events, conversations, or situations in your life with friends, parents, teachers, or even the world at large, then you know how the constant repeat of thoughts can interfere with everyday thinking and functioning.

We all do it from time to time, but when it becomes more frequent, it can become overwhelming and may influence anxiety or depression. In today’s episode I share strategies for stopping the negative repeat cycle and develop more productive and proactive thinking instead.
