02/05/23

The Healthy Matters Podcast

Season 2 - Episode 05 - Yep, We’re Talking About Your Colon...

A wise man once said that the colon is the organ that is responsible for modern human society (it’s actually our guest who said this, which, in itself, is probably deserving of its' own episode).  From colonoscopy prep to polyps, in this episode, we shed some light on an organ that literally lives where the sun doesn't shine.

Okay, enough jokes.  Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer - in both men and women - and it’s estimated that without proper screening, approximately 8% of the population (1 in 12 people) will get it.  That’s a pretty high number for something that can be effectively treated if identified early on.  Join us for a conversation with Dr. Jake Matlock, Director of the division of Gastroenterology at Hennepin Healthcare, as we go over the function of the colon, your options for screenings and current guidelines, and what can be done to reduce your associated risks.   Just in time for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March - it's colon health! - on the Healthy Matters Podcast (seriously, where else are you going to hear this?).  Join us!

It’s likely that you’ve been seen by a PA or an NP at some point, and there’s a growing number of them in our clinics and hospitals every day.   How do they differ from an MD?  What types of care do they provide?  And should you feel confident being seen by one?   In Episode 7, Dr. Hilden (MD, MPH, FACP… Yep, more letters...) and guest Meghan McCoy (PA-C), the Director of Advanced Practice Providers at Hennepin Healthcare, help clarify these titles and what they actually mean.  They explain the training and skills behind each role, where you might encounter them, and how the team functions as a whole.  It's healthcare's alphabet soup on Episode 7 - join us!

Season 2 - Episode 08 - Healthcare the World Over - Senegal Edition

Believe it or not, healthcare is healthcare - the world over.  Our journeys to better health may be very different, but at its core, the need for healthcare is the same for all of us.

On the surface, Senegal, in Africa, couldn't be more different than Minnesota, however many of the conditions people face there with regard to their health are not too dissimilar - Hypertension (high blood pressure), dehydration, adequate nutrition from an ever-changing food supply, COVID - the list goes on.  On Episode 8 of the podcast, we welcome Bolo Diallo-Young, a registered nurse at Hennepin Healthcare and the founder of Cellal Africa, an organization dedicated to building sustainable healthcare resources in Senegal, and beyond.  Dr. Hilden recently visited Senegal with Bolo and Cellal, and on this episode, we'll give a glimpse into Senegalese life, discuss the successes of the organization, and the challenges they face going forward.  It's an inspiring conversation with a very inspiring person you won't want to miss.  Join us!

S02_E10 - Diabetes.  It's on the Rise, so it's Time to Get Wise.

In 2019, the CDC estimated that 8.7% of all adult Americans had diabetes, and it's been projected that by 2040, that number could rise to around 20% (1 in 5 people!).  That's a staggering statistic, but where does it come from?  What does it do to the body?  What's the difference between Type 1 and Type 2?  And why is it dubbed "sweet urine" (eew...)?   We've all heard of it, but  it's time we broke it down to the basics.

On Episode 10 of the podcast we'll be joined by Dr. Laura LaFave, Director of the Division of Endocrinology at Hennepin Healthcare, to discuss the origins of this condition, how it's diagnosed and treated, complications that can arise from it and what can be done to prevent it.  We'll also look at how it can be controlled through insulin, effective lifestyle changes and emerging drug treatments.  There are plenty of challenges one faces with this condition and this episode is loaded with important information for all of us.  Join us!

S02_E11 - Managing the Topic of Weight Management

Currently it's estimated that between 42-45% of Americans are living with overweight or obesity, and that number is expected to rise to around 50% by the year 2030!  That'd be half of the U.S. population, and that makes this a very important conversation to be having now.

There are a lot of risks and health hazards associated with overweight and obesity - heart attacks, chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes... the list is long and scary.  But is all of this inevitable?  What factors play the biggest roles?  And what can be done to maintain a healthy weight?

On Episode 11, we'll have an in-depth conversation with Dr. Iesha Galloway-Gilliam, Medical Director of the Comprehensive Weight Management Center at Hennepin Healthcare.  We'll discuss the common contributors to this condition, the role of Body Mass Index (BMI)  and other calculations and available treatments and important strategies for weight management on this episode of the podcast.  Join us!

S02_E12 - Getting Control of Asthma

Asthma is something that an estimated 26 million Americans live with every day and approximately 10% of our kids.  Living with asthma can be a challenge, especially if it's uncontrolled, and in 2019 the CDC estimated that around 10 people in the US die from asthma daily.   But still, people with controlled asthma run marathons, scuba dive, and play 90+ minutes of soccer (David Beckham) regularly.  So how does one get it under control?  What is it, exactly?  Do you ever grow out of it?  And how are our treatments progressing?

Join us on episode 12 for a conversation with Hennepin Healthcare Allergist and Immunology expert Dr. Josh Dorn, who cares for many patients living with asthma.  We'll go over the origins and contributors to this condition, what it's like to live with asthma (including Dr. Dorn's interpretation of wheezing...), and discuss the current and emerging treatments and therapies used to help people get their asthma under control.

S02_E13 - Overcoming the Loneliness Epidemic, Together

Solitude is a choice and something that all of us need in our lives at some point or another.  Loneliness, on the other hand, is something entirely different and it's become one of the largest present-day issues facing our society.  In a recent in-depth report by the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy, he refers to the loneliness issue in the U.S. as an epidemic and something that is affecting 1 in every 2 people at any given moment.

The effects of loneliness have been compared to those of smoking and even obesity, and include severe afflictions, such as heart attack, stroke, dementia, anxiety, depression - the list goes on.  But what's causing this?  What can we do to help ourselves and our society?  Join us for a conversation with the Chair of Psychiatry at Hennepin Healthcare, Dr. Eduardo Colón, as we take a closer look at the Surgeon General's report and discuss the causes and effects of the Loneliness Epidemic.  It's something that affects both individuals, as well as our society, so it's safe to say we're all in this together, and that there's something in the episode for everyone.

Sleep Apnea.  There's a number of us who live with the condition, and when you add up the number of bed partners who, by extension, also live with it, that number gets pretty huge.  But what is it exactly?   Is it dangerous?  How is it different from snoring?  And what are the options for treating it?

On Episode 15, we'll take a good look at sleep apnea with Dr. Ranji Varghese from the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center at Hennepin Healthcare.  We'll break down the causes, the risks and the range of available treatments that may just save you from a sleep divorce (it's a thing)!  From sleep studies to the latest devices and techniques, and even Dr. Varghese's own impression of a didgeridoo, we'll cover it all on this episode of the podcast.  Join us!

Arthritis.  It's a huge topic. But what is it exactly?  Well, it turns out that's kind of a loaded question and it's pretty complicated when you get into it.   Thankfully, on Episode 17 of the podcast, we've got an expert, Dr. Rawad Nasr, the Director of Rheumatology at Hennepin Healthcare to help us get a handle on it.

In this episode, we'll explain the 2 types of arthritis, the root causes of each type, when to be seen, current available treatments, and possible preventive measures.   Around 80% of us are likely to experience just one of the types of arthritis at some point in our lives, so it's definitely worth getting the basics down.   Join us!

Happy New Year to all, and best wishes for sticking with those resolutions!

Although a new year gives us a fresh start for many things, regrettably, that doesn't apply to everything.  Some issues in our communities know no bounds, transcending ages and communities and affecting all walks of life.  Perhaps one of the bigger concerns in this category is the Fentanyl crisis.

Fentanyl addiction is something that many people in our communities are struggling with, and something that we as a society must continue to confront.  And one of the keys to solving any problem is understanding it, and in Episode 4 we'll be joined by Addiction Medicine Specialist, Dr. Lauren Graber (MD, MPH), to give us insight into the crisis and the drug, and details of the experience for the individual.  What's it like to be addicted?   What's it like to go through withdrawal?  How long does it last?  And how do doctors actually help get people clean?  This episode is a great chance to better understand the particulars of dealing with both the drug and the crisis, and it's packed with essential information for all of us.  Please join us.

S03_E05 - Listen up!  We're talking to an Audiologist...

The Stapes!  Tinnitus!  Ear Wax!

Approximately 20% of the worldwide population suffers from hearing loss (and around 100% suffer from ear wax... Eeeew).  But what can be done to protect our hearing?  Is hearing loss permanent?  What's that ringing in my ears?  And why do we have earwax to begin with?

When it comes to your ears and your hearing, there's a lot to know, so we thought it'd be a good idea to have an in-depth conversation with Hennepin Healthcare Audiologist, Dr. Janet Hansen.  She's an expert in the field of hearing and will help us get a better understanding of our ears, our hearing, and what can be done when things go awry.  Join us and learn about the bummer that is tinnitus, our hearing thresholds, and a common New York Times Crossword Puzzle clue that stumps so many of us...  Check it out!

Here are some helpful resources that we discussed in the episode if you want to learn more:

It's not uncommon that the terms IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) get confused.  Both have to do with your guts, both have impacted the lives of many in today's society and both could probably be explained a bit more.   We plan on getting to both of them, but for starters, in Episode 6 of the show, we're going to take a better look into IBD with the help of Hennepin Healthcare Gastroenterologist, Dr. Jake Matlock!

Dr. Matlock has helped us break down many other GI issues on our show and this time around he'll help us better understand the origins, diagnosis, and treatments of both Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis.  How common are they?  Are they hereditary?  How do they differ from IBS?  What can be done to treat them?  And what is "The Pill Cam"?  When it comes to our guts, there's a lot to know, so come get wise with us!

S03_E07 - The Bone Zone: Insights on Osteoporosis and Healthy Bones

Ever wonder why we shrink in old age?  Is it true that astronauts lose bone mass in space?  And does all milk have the same amount of calcium?  There are over 200 bones in the human body and it's safe to say each plays a pretty important role, so of course it's important to keep them healthy!  But what's the best way to go about that?  What are some of the things that can go wrong with them?  And what is a "T-score" anyway?

Thankfully, on Episode 7 of the show, we'll be joined by Endocrinologist and author, Dr. Ann Kearns (MD, PhD), of Hennepin Healthcare to help get some information and advice on our precious frames.  We'll go over the best practices for keeping our bones healthy, the common causes when things go awry, and options available to us in the event that they do.  Doctor Kearns literally wrote the book on Osteoporosis, which you can find here!  We all have bones, and we all age, so there's a ton of essential information here for everyone.  We hope you'll join us!

S03_E08 - Getting our Brains Around TBI and Concussions

Brains!  We've all got 'em.  (Well, perhaps some of us more than others...)  But it's estimated that almost 50% (!) of all adults in the U.S. have experienced a concussive event or some sort of traumatic brain injury in their lifetime.  That's a staggering statistic, and on Episode 8 of the show, we'll be joined by Dr. Matthew Puderbaugh to help us define what a traumatic brain injury is, how to identify one, and what to do when we see one.

Dr. Puderbaugh is an Air Force veteran and assists on the sidelines of the NFL, so it's safe to say he's seen a number of these over the years.  He'll help us wrap our brains around what's happening when concussive events occur, how they're treated, and the effect they can have on our emotional states.  After a concussive event:  Is it best to avoid light?  Do you have to stay awake?  How long does it take to recover?   Join us for the conversation and get answers to these questions and more, on Episode 8!

If you or a loved one has sustained a brain injury, be sure and check out the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance website for resources and support!

Cholesterol can be a confusing subject for many of us.  And, as many of us can attest to, seeing the results from a lipid panel can be like reading a foreign language.  What's a safe range?  Does good cholesterol cancel out the bad?  And what is a lipid, anyway?

It turns out cholesterol is a necessary piece of the human puzzle, but like a lot things, too much of anything is likely not good.  But what can be done to help us in the battle for better numbers?  Thankfully on Episode 9 of the show, we'll have the help of Hennepin Healthcare cardiologist, Dr. Woubeshet Ayenew, MD, to break down some of the terms and concepts around cholesterol and get us a better feel for what we're up against.  He'll give insight on how to calculate risk of a heart attack (there's a cool online calculator here!), what we can do to keep our cholesterol in check, the role of statins, and more !  We've all got cholesterol, so there's something here for everyone - join us!

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a rare but serious condition that affects around 5 people in every 100,000, but due to its devastating effects on both the patient and the caregivers, it's something that certainly merits a deeper conversation.  Lou Gehrig and Steven Hawking may be the two most well-known cases, but it seems once ALS is mentioned, many people are in one way or another connected to it.  But what's actually happening in the body?  What do we think causes it?  What is the progression of the illness like and what are the current treatments available?

There's still a lot out there that we don't know about the disease, but the medical community is making strides every day to help support those living with the condition to lead fulfilling lives. On Episode 10 of the podcast, we'll have an in-depth conversation with Dr. Sam Maiser, MD, Chair of Neurology at Hennepin Healthcare and an expert on ALS, to help us get a better understanding of the disease.  We'll explore what is known and still unknown, what the experience is like for the patient and caregivers, available treatments and resources, and what the future may hold for those living with this disease.  It's a thoughtful conversation with a dedicated specialist on one of medicine's most challenging topics.  We hope you'll join us.

S03_E12 - Strengthening Our Understanding of the Pelvic Floor

The Pelvic Floor.   Everyone with a pelvis, has a pelvic floor.  But what is it?  For starters, it's something many of us take for granted - until issues arise...  And although pelvic floor issues commonly effect women, they effect plenty of men as well.   From feeling like you need to sprint to the bathroom every five minutes, to anxiety around the body's ability to "hold it", to experiencing discomfort during intimate moments, these conditions can really throw a wrench in your day.  But fear not, because understanding what's going on down there is the first step towards regaining control.

The pelvic floor is responsible for a lot of important behind the scenes functions in our body, and when conditions such as incontinence, prolapse or pelvic pain arise, it's important to know what can be done to get things back on track.  On this episode we'll be joined by Dr. Beth Stegora, an expert in pelvic floor conditions and therapies for treating them.  We'll identify and define the most common conditions and go over the diagnosis, treatments and resources available to help those dealing with these all-too-common issues.   We hope you'll join us!

S03_E13 - Focus on Psychosis - A Conversation with a Clinical Psychologist

Schizophrenia, Delusional Disorder, Hallucinations, Bipolar Disorder...  These are some of the many conditions that fall under the category of Psycosis.  But did you know that 1 in every 30 people in the U.S. will experience a psychotic event at some point in their life?  But who is most at risk?  What are some of the early signs?  How is psychosis diagnosed and what treatments do we have?

It's safe to say psychosis has been given an imperfect definition in the media and in entertainment over the years.  Psychotic episodes typically occur when someone has difficulty telling the difference between what's real and what's not.  These conditions can take many forms and they are treated in a variety of ways, but thankfully it's been a long time since the era of asylums.  But what's the current state of affairs around these conditions?   Joining us on Episode 13 is Dr. Marielle Demarais, PhD, LP, who will help us better define psychosis and walk us through the current diagnoses, treatments and supports available to patients and their loved ones.  We'll also field a few listener questions on the subject as well!

Although psychosis might be more common than you think, it might not be exactly what you've been lead to believe.  We hope you'll join us to find out more!

S03_E16 - The Next Step for Community Violence Prevention & Intervention

The rise of community violence has become an alarming issue in many areas, impacting the daily lives of residents, law enforcement, hospital personnel, and the overall health of neighborhoods. As these incidents increase, they bring with them a host of health (and life) problems that extend beyond immediate safety concerns. Understanding the causes and effects is crucial for developing effective strategies to restoring peace and stability, and breaking the cycle of community violence. And in Episode 16, to help us understand all of this, we are joined by Kentral Galloway, Director of the Next Step Program in Minneapolis.

The Next Step Program is dedicated to providing resources and immediate support to survivors of community violence. Kentral and his team are also instrumental in deterring future violence and fostering positive healing and a better future for those individuals and families affected. We'll have a candid conversation about what is happening in our communities, and share some of the intervention and prevention strategies that are being implemented to help curb these disturbing trends. You'll even learn how "narrative medicine" can be a helpful elixir.

S03_E17 - Beyond Medication - Effective Strategies for Pain Management

On a scale of 0-10, where is your pain right now?  We've all been asked that question at one point or another, but really - think about where it is right now.  Most of us experience some level of pain throughout our daily lives that we manage in one way or another, and oftentimes we assume that the best tools for dealing with pain are medications.  But they've got their downsides, too, and more and more, we're finding out that medications are not the only or even the most effective, means of dealing with chronic pain.

Pain is individual, so there's not always a one-size-fits-all solution, and on Episode 17 we'll re-shape the conversation around pain with Dr. Catherine Justice, an Integrative Physical Therapist at Hennepin Healthcare.  We'll look at how our brains interpret pain, how our thresholds can shift throughout our lives, and explore effective pharmacy-free practices for dealing with pain like breathing techniques, mindfulness, and movement therapies.  Did you know that Yoga is the Sanskrit word for union?  Get wise with us on this episode of the Healthy Matters Podcast!

Toothaches!  Neuralgias!  Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD)!  Apart from these being great Scrabble words, they are also just a few things that fall under the category of Orofacial Pain.  Any one of these conditions can severely impact our daily lives, with wide-ranging effects that can extend well beyond pain.  They can affect the way we eat, speak, breathe, and even how we feel psychologically.  But like many things in healthcare, we're left with a few of the same questions when it comes to Orofacial Pain.  What causes these conditions?  How are they diagnosed?  And, what help is available for those suffering from them?  And does BOTOX really have a role in medicine?

On Episode 18 of our show, we'll be joined by Dr. Maram Taema, who will walk us through this relatively new focus in medicine and discuss approaches that can make a difference in the lives of those affected by Orofacial pain.  She's a Dentist, Oral Surgeon, and a specialist in these conditions and will provide practical tips for diagnosing and treating these conditions - both inside and outside the dentists' chair - including the magical relaxing power of the letter "N".  Suffer from headaches?  Grind your teeth?  Got a click in your jaw?  This one's for you.  Join us!

S03_E20 - From Hurt to Healing:  The Power of Being Trauma-Informed

Today, we're diving into a topic that's crucial but often overlooked: adverse childhood events (ACEs), and trauma-informed care (TIC). According to the CDC, nearly two-thirds of all U.S. adults have experienced one or more ACEs. That’s how common they are, and the effects of these adverse events can add up over time. Many of us may not realize how deeply early experiences of stress, neglect, or trauma can shape not only our mental health but also our physical well-being. These early events leave a lasting imprint, whether through relationships, behaviors, or even how our bodies respond to stress. The good news? There's a growing movement toward trauma-informed care, which shifts the focus from asking 'What's wrong with you?' to 'What happened to you?' It's about creating a supportive environment that fosters healing and resilience.

On Episode 20, we’re talking about different types of traumas, and how trauma-informed care is a unique and very effective approach to help people get through the toughest times. Joining us is Dr. Mitch Radin, he’s a Clinical Psychologist and an expert on trauma-informed care at Hennepin Healthcare. We’ll cover the elements of TIC, how they work, and how this approach is making a difference not only with patients but also with healthcare professionals. Did you know you can control your heart through your lungs? Or have you ever heard the analogy that your brain is like a rider and a horse? We cover both of these things too!

Episode - 4 - The Inside Scoop on Addictions - from an Addiction Medicine Specialist

Drugs.  Alcohol. Shopping.  Sex. Caffeine. Tobacco.  Overeating. The list goes on...

Why do some people become addicts, and some don't?

Join Dr. Hilden and special guest Dr. Charlie Reznikoff, addiction medicine specialist at Hennepin Healthcare, for an inside look at addictions.  Learn about the use and abuse of opioids in medicine, the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the opioid crisis, and discover a very surprising link between the two.  Plus hear answers to listener questions in an impromptu session of Hilden's House Calls.
