12 Jan 2024137. FRIDAY CHATS: Synthetic vs Desiccated Thyroid Hormones00:09:30

Navigating the different medication options for thyroid disease, like Hashimoto's, can be overwhelming, especially when you're not feeling well, and people don't always receive all the information that's out there. That's why this week, I'm clarifying the difference between synthetic and desiccated thyroids and the medications available. I cover:

Levothyroxine, also known as Synthroid, and the benefits of synthetic hormones.

Liothyronine, also known as Cytomel, how it works, when it helps the most, and potential risks.

Desiccated Thyroid Hormones, or desiccated pig thyroid, how they work, and the potential benefits and problems.

Remember, there is some trial and error to the process, so be sure to continue to test your levels and don't accept the first option you're given if it's not working for you.

10 Sep 2024169. My Summer Recap and Your Q&A Submissions00:30:55

In this episode, Dr. Danielle provides an update on her summer travels and shares her personal experience with low AMH levels. She discusses how she improved her AMH levels through various methods, including taking antioxidants, doing acupuncture, and optimizing her thyroid function. Dr. Danielle also answers listener questions about high LDL and total cholesterol, improving period color and flow, increasing egg white cervical mucus, and optimizing estrogen levels. She clarifies the difference between insulin resistance and PCOS and provides tips for weight loss with PCOS. Lastly, she announces an upcoming download on optimal hormone levels for fertility testing.

Takeaways

  • Low AMH levels can be improved through various methods, such as taking antioxidants, doing acupuncture, and optimizing thyroid function.
  • High LDL and total cholesterol can be influenced by factors like genetics, constipation, and low thyroid function.
  • Period color and flow can indicate hormone imbalances, with light flow potentially indicating low estrogen and heavy flow potentially indicating high estrogen.
  • Egg white cervical mucus is important for fertility, and its absence can be caused by low estrogen, lack of ovulation, or other factors.
  • Optimizing estrogen levels can be achieved through a balanced diet, supporting egg quality, and addressing adrenal function.
  • Insulin resistance and PCOS are related but not the same, with insulin resistance being a blood sugar issue and PCOS being a syndrome with metabolic and hormonal imbalances.
  • Eating a bigger breakfast and lighter dinner can be effective for weight loss with PCOS, but it's important to focus on nutrient-dense foods and consider other factors beyond meal timing.
  • An upcoming download will provide comprehensive information on optimal hormone levels for fertility testing and how to advocate for your own health.
  • Sharing the podcast and leaving reviews can help others discover valuable information about hormone health.

23 May 202376. Gillian's Path to Regular Periods and a Brighter Life00:23:41

When the dust settled after the end of Gillian’s dietetic internship, she realized she had been in survival mode and ignoring symptoms with her period for awhile. Now a registered dietician, she began to notice 55 day cycles, fatigue, mood swings, and horrible cramps.

She knew her period was a great source of information and that her symptoms were telling her something was off. Because her symptoms weren’t the traditional PCOS symptoms of weight gain and hair in unwanted places, she didn’t originally consider PCOS.

Through the PCOS Protocol, we began working together to help find answers to her tough, irregular periods.

In this episode, Gillian discusses all the changes that made a world of difference in her cycle, energy, and mood, including doing the Dutch test and implementing targeted supplements, getting her blood sugar in check, accountability from the protocol, and incorporating strength training.

Now Gillian experiences regular 32 day cycles with no PMS symptoms. She has renewed energy and life feels much brighter!

The college atmosphere can really work against a woman with PCOS (hello, stress, alcohol, and lack of sleep!). Today’s podcast guest, Jenna, has learned how to excel in college while also working toward healing her PCOS.

For Jenna, signs of PCOS began with weight struggles, cystic acne, insatiable hunger, and irregular periods in high school. As an athlete, she was told irregular periods were normal.

When we started working together in Spring of 2021 Jenna is now experiencing regular periods, no more bloating, better energy, and balanced hunger and moods.

In this episode, she tells the sweet story of how her dad was the one that figured out she was dealing with PCOS, the impact of college and Covid on her journey to healing, and how a big summer internship taught her the importance of managing stress for healthy hormones.

Water & Air Filter recommendations:

Water Filters:

The ones with an asterisk (*) are the least expensive. You'll see that the popular Brita filters are not on this list. Brita fails to filter our heavy metals, chlorine, bacteria, parasites, or fungi. If you have a Brita, it's time to upgrade!

Air Filters:

It’s good to be aware of how harmful things are, but the truth is we live in a very toxic world. There is a lot we can’t control, but we can focus on what we can control and every little step counts.

In this episode, Dr. Danielle interviews Dr. Lauren Steinman, a SIBO expert, about small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and its impact on hormonal health and fertility. They discuss the symptoms of SIBO, the different types of SIBO, and the root causes of the condition. They also explore the testing and treatment options for SIBO, including antibiotics and herbal remedies. Dr. Lauren emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of SIBO and working with a practitioner who takes a holistic approach. She also provides tips for preventing relapses and recommends abdominal massage for supporting gut motility.

About Dr. Lauren Steinman:

"Having grown up in Germany, I had the great fortune to experience a holistic style of medicine from an early age.

This inspired me to study at the oldest naturopathic medical school in the US (The National University of Natural Medicine), in Portland Oregon. During my four year doctoral training, I underwent rigorous classroom and clinical training, and spent extra time focusing my clinical education on women's health and digestive health.

SIBO is my clinical focus and I am one of a handful of experts treating this condition in Europe. Having suffered from SIBO myself, I know how frustrating it can be. In my 7 years of practice I have treated thousand of SIBO patients. Most of my patients come to me after a long and difficult journey with their gut health and travel to my practice from all over Germany and Europe. I am passionate about treating this complex condition and training healthcare providers in the specifics of SIBO.

In Germany I am licensed to practice as a Heilpraktiker due to differences in medical licensing. "

Takeaways

  • SIBO is an acronym for small intestine bacterial overgrowth, a condition where bacteria migrate from the large intestine to the small intestine and cause an overgrowth.
  • Symptoms of SIBO include bloating, abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea or constipation, reflux, nausea, and systemic symptoms like joint pain and brain fog.
  • The three types of SIBO are hydrogen-dominant, methane-dominant (also known as EMO), and hydrogen sulfide-dominant.
  • Testing for SIBO is typically done through a breath test, with lactulose being the preferred test substance.
  • Treatment options for SIBO include antibiotics (such as rifaximin, neomycin, and metronidazole) and herbal remedies (such as oregano extract, garlic extract, and neem).
  • It is important to address the root causes of SIBO, such as motility issues, food poisoning, hypothyroidism, and stress.
  • Relapses of SIBO are common, with a 40-70% relapse rate. It is important to work with a practitioner who takes a holistic approach and focuses on relapse prevention.
  • The low FODMAP diet can provide symptomatic relief in the short term, but it is not a long-term solution and should not be followed for more than three months.
  • Additional tests that may be helpful for SIBO include markers of inflammation (such as CRP and calprotectin) and markers of gut permeability (such as zonulin and IFABP).
  • Finding a practitioner who specializes in SIBO and takes a holistic approach is important for effective treatment and long-term management of the condition.

Postpartum can be a very vulnerable time for women and yet it seems to be the season women are most often forgot about. I’m joined today by guest, Samantha Gipson, a pilates instructor, to discuss what to expect postpartum and how to best support yourself. Samantha shares a bit about her birth story, her experience with nursing, and what postpartum looked like.

After delivering her baby boy in March 2022, Samantha struggled with nausea, extreme exhaustion, IBS, anxiety, and brain fog. Previous to becoming pregnant, Samantha also dealt with heavy periods and eczema.

We began working together when Samantha was 3 months postpartum and after diet changes and supportive supplements, Samantha has increased energy, better digestion, less anxiety, and lighter periods!

In this episode Samantha also talks about her experience of navigating doctors postpartum and being on Zoloft.

Samantha’s business is a true manifestation of her passion to live a fulfilled life by means of health, community, fun, and balance. Samantha has been a fitness teacher since 2015 sharing not only her expertise on pilates, strength-training, and mobility but her wisdom on body-positivity and self-love through movement and nourishment.

A lot of times we assume that if anything needs to be tested, checked, or discussed that our primary care doctor will make sure it's covered; however, unfortunately, that is not always the case. It's really important that you have the information you need to be able to advocate for yourself at your doctor's visit. Most of the time, you don't get that much time with your doctor, so the more prepared you can be, the more you will benefit from your visit. Listen in to this episode to learn exactly what you should ask for!

16 May 202374. Keri's PCOS Pregnancy Success Story00:26:37

Since her first period, Keri experienced irregular cycles, long and heavy periods, and PMS symptoms such as cramping and nausea. While she always suspected something was off, it wasn’t until her friend mentioned her own struggle with PCOS that Keri had a lightbulb moment and began to connect the dots between her symptoms and PCOS.

A nurse herself, Keri saw first hand as conventional doctor’s ignored her and let her down as she sought answers to her symptoms.

Not knowing where else to turn or who to trust, Keri would spend 7 more years dealing with irregular periods, PMS, and struggles with fertility.

Months after joining my PCOS Protocol, Keri got pregnant! Our focus then switched to a healthy pregnancy, healthy baby, and energy to enter into motherhood. Keri is now 5 months postpartum with a beautiful baby girl.

In this episode, Keri tells us what changes she made that helped to heal her PCOS and fertility. She also talks about her family history of gestational diabetes and how she avoided it with her pregnancy. Finally, she encourages listeners to be their own advocates and that pregnancy with PCOS is possible!

08 Mar 2024152. FRIDAY CHATS: Differentiating Hormonal vs Non-Hormonal Acne00:07:01

In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the difference between hormonal acne and food sensitivity acne. She explains that hormonal acne is typically deep, cystic, and located along the jawline and chin. It can fluctuate with hormonal changes and may be accompanied by symptoms like hair loss and facial hair growth. On the other hand, food sensitivity acne is more surface-level, smaller, and located on the cheeks and forehead. It is not cyclical and may be accompanied by digestive symptoms. Dr. Danielle also emphasizes the importance of identifying food triggers with the help of a healthcare provider.

Takeaways

  • Hormonal acne is deep, cystic, and located along the jawline and chin. It can fluctuate with hormonal changes and may be accompanied by symptoms like hair loss and facial hair growth.
  • Food sensitivity acne is more surface-level, smaller, and located on the cheeks and forehead. It is not cyclical and may be accompanied by digestive symptoms.
  • It is important to identify food triggers with the help of a healthcare provider rather than restricting oneself from multiple potential trigger foods.
  • Testing hormones and doing a GI map test can provide valuable insights into the underlying causes of acne.
