14 Feb 2022Pete Malinverni00:46:02

This Valentine's Day features a very special conversation with pianist Pete Malinverni.

On The Town - Pete Malinverni Plays Leonard Bernstein is a wonderful album, featuring a stunning jazz trio and some of the world's most beautiful tunes. We discuss the making of the album, when Pete met Leonard and all things pandemic and music. It's a long episode, but for a very good reason, and I hope you enjoy listening to this fascinating conversation.

Thanks to Pete for allowing me to use clips from the album alongside our conversation.

06 Mar 2022Malcolm Singer00:35:54

It is with great pleasure that I present this, the 100th episode of Harmonious World. I joined composer, conductor and educator Malcolm Singer in his studio to interview him in real life. I'm so grateful to Malcolm for giving me that opportunity and to our mutual friend Michael Shapiro for effecting the introduction.

Malcolm and I sat in his studio chatting and listening to some of his music and I hope you enjoy listening to his insights.

Thanks to Malcolm for allowing me to use clips from the album alongside our conversation and for sharing a selfie or two (which you can see on my social media feed).

07 Apr 2022Gisele Ben-Dor00:23:33

I was pleased to be joined by conductor Gisele Ben-Dor for a chat about her latest album Cien Anos, which features the music of Piazzolla and Bandoneon player, arranger and composer Juanjo Mosalini.

Cien Anos is a wonderful album and it was fascinating talking to Gisele about the lack of exposure for Latin American music and how this album was recorded.

03 May 2022Sean Friar and Michael Mizrahi00:27:11

Composer Sean Friar and Michael Mizrahi from NOW Ensemble joined me to talk about their new collaboration on Before and After.

This latest album is about enormous ideas and our own small place in the larger rhythm of the world, yet it is musically intimate. NOW Ensemble features flute, clarinet, double bass, piano and electric guitar and our conversation includes interesting debate about the genre of this music - and whether genre matters anyway.

Thanks to Sean, Michael and NOW Ensemble for allowing me to use clips from the album alongside our conversation.

10 May 2022Jennifer Kloetzel00:22:22

I was joined for the latest episode by cellist Jennifer Kloetzel.

Jennifer's latest album - Beethoven : The Conquering Hero - is already one of my favourites of 2022. A stunning collecting of the great composers 'complete' works for cello, this three-album set includes five sonatas for Cello and Piano, three sets of variations and the Horn sonata for which the composer wrote a cello part. We had a lovely discussion about how Beethoven experimented with the instrument and the stunning results.

24 May 2022Jasmin Lacasse Roy00:16:17

Classical guitar has always felt a little strange to me, but I've now been introduced to the work of Jasmin Lacasse Roy and the chance to chat with him has completely changed my view.

Jasmin's latest album - Meteores - pays homage to Montreal's Mile End district and each of the ten tracks tells a different story and adds a little more perspective and colour.

Thanks to Jasmin for allowing me to use clips from Meteores alongside our conversation.

30 May 2022Alex Webb00:15:55

British pianist, songwriter and arranger Alex Webb joined me in this latest episode of Harmonious World after I had heard the launch of the rather marvellous British Standard Time.

There's lots to love about this album, not least the collection of fine UK musicians playing Alex's arrangements of some fine tunes by a wide variety of British songwriters.

I was joined by Italian guitarist and composer Simone Gubbiotti for the latest episode of Harmonious World.

Underdogs is both the name of the new album and the trio that includes bassist Davide Liberti and drummer Paolo Franciscone. The album includes soulful and frenetic jazz - something for everyone.

08 Jun 2022Bonus episode June 202200:07:25

While walking the streets of Paris at the end of May and beginning of June, I recorded a couple of brief excerpts. Nothing to do with music, but a little bonus. I may do more of these, but I won't be posting them on social media - well done if you found it and I hope you enjoy listening to these few minutes.

20 Jun 2022John Bullard00:21:43

This episode of Harmonious World features a conversation with banjo virtuoso John Bullard, in which we discuss his 24 Preludes for Solo Banjo by Adam Larrabee.

The Preludes were commissioned by John and each one has a very different character. In our conversation, we discuss the order, which runs musically through Volume 1 and we have to wait for it to come full circle at the end of Volume 2, when that is released. In this work, John is aiming to expand the banjo's classical reach.

Thanks to John for allowing me to use clips from 24 Preludes for Solo Banjo alongside our conversation.

27 Jun 2022Nick Finzer00:20:46

In a change of focus, the latest episode of Harmonious World is not about a new musical release, but rather a book on the topic of the music business. It's a second conversation with trombonist and Outside In Music founder and CEO Nick Finzer.

Create, Connect, Repeat is a fascinating book that provides a career strategy of building a live in a creative industry - any creative industry. In our conversation, Nick and I discuss the ways in which connect with your audience have changed and can be capitalised on by artists.

Thanks to Nick for allowing me to use clips alongside our conversation from one of my favourite tracks of his -  Evolutions of Perspective - which is musically and conceptually spot on for this topic.

Singer Emma Smith has a lot to say - both musically and in the fascinating interview you can hear here.

Meshuga Baby is an extraordinary album, featuring several beautifully arranged standards and four tracks penned by Smith and pianist Jamie Safir. This conversation was a total delight and a great way to launch season 9 of Harmonious World.

In our conversation, we discuss 20 for 2020 Volume 3 and the new work that Inbal is doing, including a planned trip to London in October.

06 Aug 2022Matt Haimovitz00:31:48

When I organised my interview with cellist Matt Haimovitz, Primavera II the rabbits had just been released. Now there's also Primavera III the vessels to add to the original Primavera I  the wind.

This is all just part of the massive Primavera Project, which will eventually include 81 world premieres for solo cello. Our conversation covers the inspiration behind the compositions, the recording process and what's coming next for the project. There are some remarkable videos to watch, too.

Thanks to Matt for a fascinating conversation and for allowing me to use clips from Primavera II the rabbits alongside our conversation.

16 Aug 2022Mathias Heise00:28:39

Harmonica player Mathias Heise has brought his Quadrillion project back with an amazing album that is just so full of joy. It was great to talk to him about the album, lockdown and the delight in getting back to playing in front of a real audience.

Quadrillion is Danish jazz fusion at its finest, with fascinating harmonies that cheat the ear, alongside complex melodies and hard-hitting grooves.

Thanks to Mathias for a great chat and for allowing me to use clips from Quadrillion alongside our conversation.

22 Aug 2022Nicolas Horvath00:40:07

This episode was a total delight - not only did I get to interview the pianist Nicolas Horvath, who is a Steinway Artist and a fascinating musician, but we were also discussing the compositions of William Susman. Bill and I chatted for episodes 16 and 31 of Harmonious World and he was generous enough to introduce me to Nicolas (virtually, at least).

These compositions on Quiet Rhythms Book 1 are stunning and Nicolas plays them with panache. Listen to the album if you can, but I hope you enjoy listening to the extracts you can hear before and after our conversation.

29 Aug 2022Extended Trio00:23:02

From the modern classical solo piano compositions of the last episode, I am joined for this episode of Harmonious World by Extended Trio. Their style of jazz draws upon their varied musical influences and this album is very much the fruit of the Covid-19 pandemic.

My discussions with Oscar Rossignoli, Matt Booth and Brad Webb cover their third album - Without Notice - together with their backgrounds and their musical influences, with some fascinating insights into the music and culture of New Orleans.

Thanks for the trio for allowing me to play extracts from two of the tracks alongside our conversation.

06 Sep 2022Gareth Williams00:19:04

There's another UK artist in this episode of Harmonious World, as I speak to dynamic and creative pianist Gareth Williams.

Gareth's latest album is Short Stories  and it features some more legendary musicians on a thought-provoking collection of original and jazz standards. Our conversation took place in the heat of July and the rain is pouring as I'm editing this, but the music seems to fit with whatever season and weather surrounds us.

Thanks to Gareth for allowing me to play extracts from Short Stories alongside our conversation.

15 Sep 2022Pei-Wen Liao and William Goldstein00:26:08

If you're reading this while listening to the opening, I hope you are enjoying the wonderful music of violinist Pei-Wen Liao and pianist William Goldstein. This conversation really is about them sharing what they're best at - the concept at the heart of Harmonious World.

Pei-Wen and Bill's album is Brushstrokes: The intersection of Art and Music. In essence, this is composition in real-time, and each piece of music is then linked (after the recording) to an art work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The composition process is fascinating and I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Thanks to Pei-Wen and Bill for allowing me to play extracts from Brushstrokes alongside our conversation.

01 Oct 2022Season 10 trailer00:06:36

I'm grateful to pianist Ben Raznick for asking me about my sax playing. I thought it would make an interesting trailer for season 10, which starts this week.

The first guest for season 10 will be Ben, talking about his new album Birds of a Feather. In this trailer, you can hear his composition Barcelona Tango-Rag, which feels like it should be my new theme tune!

First, you can hear a brief update of my life as a sax player, including mention of both NYJO and The Style Council.

24 Oct 2022Trio Xolo00:23:32

For this episode of Harmonious World I am joined by sax player Derrick Michaels and bassist Zachary Swanson: two-thirds of Trio Xolo.

If you're unfamiliar with free-flowing improvisation, the Trio Xolo  latest album - In Flower, In Song  - is a great place to start. The combination of bass, percussion and sax brings a sense of music that captures the moment in which it is performed. I enjoyed discussing the album with Derrick and Zachary and hope you enjoy listening in.

I promise you'll love this episode with singer Sara Shiloh Rae and The Sondheim Project - Sara wasn't dismayed when I said that she and the band Bluebird Junction had "taken Broadway and moved it into the middle of nowhere."

This really was a great discussion. Sara is a classically-trained singer with opera and concert hall credentials, but there's something joyous and blues-infused about this approach to some classic Sondheim tracks. We had a blast discussing it.

Thanks to Sara for allowing me to play extracts from The Sondheim Project alongside our conversation.

28 Aug 2023Freddie Bryant and I chat about his song cycle 'Upper West Side Love Story'00:34:18

* * Now you can subscribe to Harmonious World for special subscriber-only content

Freddie Bryant played in the Upper West Side as a small child and grew up on its streets. His song cycle really is a Love Story to these streets and playgrounds. In our discussion, Freddie tells the story of the poetry and the music and how it all came together.

This is a poignant album and it tells a different story about an area of New York some of us have seen in films through the decades but that Freddie knows personally. His poetry and music have a dynamic interplay that tell a tale of his home, reflecting on homelessness and the dark side of gentrification.

Thanks to Freddie for allowing me to play extracts from Upper West Side Love Story alongside our conversation.

06 Sep 2023Chris Allard talks about 'Melodic Collective'00:19:42

* * Now you can subscribe to Harmonious World for special subscriber-only content

Melodic Collective is guitarist Chris Allard's latest project, in which he works with John Turville (piano), Robbie Robson (trumpet), Oli Hayhurst (bass) and Will Glaser (drums). Their self-titled album is out now on Perdido Records and it's a quasi-live album which delivers a classy, cohesive jazz quintet.

I spoke to Chris last year alongside pianist Ross Stanley for episode 136 of this podcast and saw them perform their album Tortuga live at London's 606 Club. This new project promises more great things live and please watch out for a review of the album's official London launch.

'Celeste' is the new album from acclaimed Danish jazz singer, songwriter and guitarist Mette Juul. This is a collection of classic standard tunes you will recognise and some original tracks which will take your breath away.

Mette and I had a conversation about the choice of tracks and her storytelling alongside Mike Moreno (guitar) and Lars Danielsson (cello, celeste, kalimba, melodica, cymbals, double bass).

Celeste is out on Naxos-Prophone records on 10 November 2023.

20 Sep 2023Sherri Chung joins me to discuss making music for film and television00:26:02

* * Now you can subscribe to Harmonious World for special subscriber-only content

You may have never heard of Sherri Chung, but you have almost certainly heard some of her music on the film and TV shows we all watch from time to time. We had a fascinating chat about her background and how she composes within the confines of visual media.

If the quality is occasionally a little less than perfect, it's because Sherri was in her car - she's a busy woman. Alongside her composition, she was recently elected the first female governor of the Television Academy's music branch - the people who award the Emmys.

Thanks to Sherri for allowing me to play extracts from her scores for Gremlins and Based on a True Story alongside our conversation.

27 Sep 2023Joshua Espinoza in conversation about ‘Songs From Yesterday’ and ear worms00:34:55

This episode of Harmonious World was particularly easy to record. Pianist Joshua Espinoza's trio album Songs From Yesterday is delightful and insightful, and chatting to him about it was easy.

It's a shame this is a podcast, rather than a video, because Joshua's face lit up when I asked him about performing and recording with his band mates Kris Monson (double bass) and Jaron Lamar Davis (drums). I think you can hear something of that joy in his voice when talking about the experience.

Thanks to Joshua for allowing me to play extracts from Songs From Yesterday alongside our conversation. The album is out this week, so do please enjoy it.

04 Oct 2023Matthew Whitaker prepares to perform at FMDG in Manhattan00:15:47

This episode of Harmonious World features pianist Matthew Whitaker, who is set to perform at his alma mater - The Filomen M D'Agostino Greenberg (FMDG) Music School. This is his way of giving back to a unique organisation which has helped him so much along his journey as a pianist.

Matthew's album Connections was conceived during the pandemic and it bears witness to a difficult time in all our lives, and to the people who have always helped him through. It's all about the connections we make.

Thanks to Matthew for allowing me to play extracts from Connections alongside our conversation, and if you're in Manhattan on 17 October, please do get yourself a ticket to the FMDG concert.

09 Oct 2023SPECIAL episode: Gadi Stern from Shalosh Trio and 'Tales of Utopia'00:30:30

This is a very special episode of Harmonious World.

I am joined by pianist Gadi Stern, who is one third of the Shalosh Trio. Gadi was speaking to me from Jerusalem, just hours after the start of a particularly violent and tragic escalation in the war.

There are no words to properly thank Gadi for sharing his story and that of tthe trio's album - Tales of Utopia. You can sense something from the incident in the middle of the episode. Thankfully, we were able to continue and all was well.

Shalosh are intending to continue with their plans to tour this album so please keep an eye open for news of their dates.

18 Oct 2023A discussion of 'Tower Music' with composer and percussionist Joseph Bertolozzi00:28:00

For this week's episode of Harmonious World, composer, organist and percussionist Joseph Bertolozzi joins me to discuss his album Tower Music (Musique de la Tour), which samples the sounds of the Eiffel Tower and creates music.

Although this is experimental classical music, it is not a difficult listen and the whole time there is something of the resonance of the Tower itself throughout.

26 Oct 2023Quynh Nguyen introduces her album 'The Flower of France'00:23:22

Completely by chance, the episode follows nicely from last week's. Instead of American compositions, though, this time it's French music performed by award-winning Vietnamese American pianist Quynh Nguyen.

25 Nov 2023A live chat with bassist Christian McBride00:50:51

It was a delight to interview bassist Christian McBride for the latest episode. A real delight. You can probably tell.

Christian has worked with so many great musicians and we discuss his work with just a few of them (and the eight Grammys he has been awarded), including Sting, Dee Dee Bridgewater. We also talk about some of the tracks on Prime, his album that was released earlier in 2023.

You can catch Christian with some of his musical friends at the Village Vanguard, as we discuss. Alternatively, check out some of his videos and you can see what I meant about the concentration that goes alongside the fun.

I hope you also enjoy the first playing of the new Harmonious World theme tune, composed and performed by Joe English.

11 Dec 2023In conversation with saxophonist Soweto Kinch00:23:10

Having met saxophonist Soweto Kinch at Ladbroke Hall a few weeks ago, I was delighted that he agreed to join me in conversation.

Soweto is more than a great musician, as evidenced by his album White Juju (recorded live at the Barbican in November 2021 with the London Symphony Orchestra) and I hope that comes across in our conversation. The music conveys so much about the pandemic and other major issues of our times. I cannot recommend it highly enough and if you have the chance to hear Soweto play, please do so.

28 Dec 2023Ben and Dominic from Malleus Trio00:18:09

I was joined in conversation by Ben Brown and Dominic Conway from Malleus Trio: their new album On/Off is out now and if you like some of the jazz crossover acts like Keith Jarrett and Sons of Kemet, you'll love this album.

On/Off is the trio's third album, but they've been around since 2007 and there's a collective maturity about their music - drums, tenor and bass - that brings a subtlety and collective interplay that is joyous.

08 Jan 2024A brief chat over a cuppa with singer Lucy-Anne Daniels00:12:42

This was a delightful conversation and I'm glad to be able to share it with you at the very start of 2024 and season 15 of Harmonious World.

Singer Lucy-Anne Daniels is very much one to watch and I can highly recommend you search for a gig where you can hear her sing and watch her own the stage.

Although it's a great honour for me to be able to interview some titans of music, I'm really going to seek out new artists like Lucy-Anne (and composer of my Harmonious World theme tune, Joe English) to promote. You can watch a video of her performing with fellow musicians from the Birmingham Conservatoire.

Watch out for my new blog feature of upcoming gigs - mostly UK but anything that looks interesting and especially those that feature past or future guests.
