09 Nov 2022The Art of 200s with Wes Plate02:03:01

This week, on a special episode of the HappyCast, we sit down with Wes Plate, the “mid-pack elite” runner from Washington state. Wes recently became one of only five people this year to complete the “Grand Slam of 200s”, which includes completing Cocodona 250 and the Triple Crown of 200s (Tahoe 200, Bigfoot 200, and Moab 240) all in the same year. Wes is also known for his media presence online, and there is a chance that you’ve seen one of his trail running videos on YouTube, especially if you’ve ever shown interest in doing a 200. Wes creates some of the best, most detailed, and most viewed trail running videos around, and they help paint an incredible overall picture of the races that he does.

For this episode, Wes talks about his foray into trail running, his pursuit of wanting to run longer, and the preparation, desire, and challenges of doing 200 milers. He also discusses recommendations and gives out some pointers for those thinking about doing their first 200 miler. And trust us, the distance isn’t as scary as it appears.

Wes has been an inspiration and motivation to many others looking to do longer distances, so we hope you enjoy this episode!

23 Nov 2022Heather + Huck and Recapping Dinosaur Valley 10002:12:38

This week on the HappyCast, we have Heather Gothard on to discuss her running journey. Heather has been an inspiration to many, both in running and outside of it. We also take a deep dive into the new course record holders for the 100 milers: Jeremiah Nemecheck and Regina Massingill.

30 Nov 2022From Boston to Chiang Mai with Farrell Hedrick01:56:22

This week we sit down with local marathon runner, Farrell Hedrick. He shares his running journey from the first days on the elliptical to his first marathon. Busting on the to scene with an impressive time, the focus soon shifted toward qualifying for Boston. After finally qualifying, he would soon realize his dream, but not until after running the Berlin and Chicago Marathons (due to it being shifted to the Fall). His trail debut took place this past November in the mountains of Chiang Mai at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, and it was a humbling experience. Some gauntlets may have been thrown down, so stay tuned for January.

07 Dec 2022The Low Carb Runner: Michael McKnight01:49:22

On this episode of the HappyCast, we sit down with the low carb runner himself, Michael McKnight. Hailing from Utah, Mike has quickly become one of the most accomplished trail runners around, and a name virtually synonymous with “ultra long distances”. He has won the Triple Crown of 200s (flat-out) and has some pretty amazing FKTs under his belt. We talk about his experience with long distances, nutrition in trail running, his coaching career, and much more.

Becoming one of the biggest names in trail running requires a pretty strict regimen…so yes, naturally, we talk about fighting bears.

Huge thanks to Kathleen Hanley for stepping in for Stephanie and providing some amazing content. Apparently, Andrew will be racing her during a Colorado Trail FKT attempt.

This is a pretty dense, fast, and loose episode - just how we like it. We get wildly off topic from the get-go. We hope you find it just as entertaining as we did.

At the end of the episode, Andrew talks about Texas runner Ken Anderlitch and his incredible journey to run across Texas (over 800 miles) to honor his late mother and to support those who struggle with homelessness and substance abuse. He is doing this in conjunction with Pay It Forward SA. At the time of this posting, he is still out there running.

14 Dec 2022Honeybun Boogaloo: a Lotti Brinks Story01:35:42

On this episode of the HappyCast, we sit down and talk with one of the rising stars of the trail running world, Lotti Brinks! Bursting onto the scene with her shocking course record performance at Rocky Raccoon in 2021, Lotti has gone on to make a name for herself around the country. If you don’t know her name yet, you soon will.

Give this one a listen, as we are able to deep dive into the mind of an up-and-coming elite runner. Some interesting perspectives here. Although she probably wouldn’t consider herself an elite, by HappyCast definition, anyone who moves faster than Andrew is, indeed, an “elite”.

Also, is it possible to run an entire ultra distance race by having all of your calories come from honey buns? I guess we’re going to soon find out!

And is Dylan in over his head as he challenges Lotti at the Bandera 50k in January?

17 May 2023Cocodona 250: From the Bradshaws down to Jerome01:53:32

Cocodona 250 has quickly built a reputation as one of the longest and most difficult races in the country - but with its generous cutoffs, it’s an experience that many will be capable of undertaking.

On the first part this epic Cocodona 250 recap, Andrew goes in-depth for each section of the race up until the halfway point around mile 126. From the Bradshaw Mountains to Mingus Mountain and it’s treacherous descent into Jerome, Andrew talks about the terrain, environmental challenges, and other physical and mental roadblocks that this race provides.

Is the first 50k really the toughest 50k in the country? How about the first 100k? Just how rocky and hot is this course? These are just a few questions that have been attached to this race since it’s inaugural year in 2021. We hope these next two episodes will be able to address most questions, as well as provide that in-depth overview of the entire course.

And just how many mishaps and hilarious situations does Andrew find himself in during this race? You though he would’ve learned after Moab…

Stay tuned for part two next week, as we end the recap and answer many of your questions!

As he rises out of the desert into beautiful Sedona and up onto the piney forests of the Cococino plateau, Andrew recaps the highs and lows as he marches his way towards Flagstaff, including what he describes as the lowest and worst moment he has experienced thus far in his trail running career. 02 Aug 2023Tahoe 200, The Big "Sho"02:09:05

For this episode of the HappyCast, we talk all things Tahoe 200 with returning guest Garren Hill, who is also joined by the King of Knoxville himself, and the Tennessee 100 mile record holder, Sho Gray. They both recently completed this behemoth of a race held by Destination Trail, which faced additional challenges such as the heat AND snow after the start date had to be moved to July, so we were all excited to hear their experience with this race.

We also learn a little more about Sho and his amazing and impressive running background, which includes the best possible way to DNF a race that honestly puts all of us to shame. Then, we hear all about Garren’s and Sho’s journey across Tahoe, which includes hallucinations that rival that of a George R.R. Martin novel, mythical dragon knights, toilet naps, betraying others (not once, but twice), their descent into darkness and fully succumbing to their delusions, the power of tuna mayonnaise rice balls, and EVERYONE'S collective love for TOPO Athletics. 16 Aug 2023Flatlanders vs. The Never Summer 100k01:44:58

This week on the HappyCast, we are joined by some local Texas trail running enthusiasts who decided to venture outside of their comfort zone and take on some mountains - the Never Summer 100k, to be exact, which is one of the toughest mountain races around. Regina Massingill and Kathleen Hanley from Houston, and Kevin Halliburton from DFW join us to discuss their strategies for taking on this behemoth northern Colorado race. Combined, these three individuals have an average elevation of that of the top of a city parking garage to train with. So how did they prepare for this race?

These three have some pretty epic stories from the race, as well as a literal last minute victory when all hoped seemed lost for one of these individuals. Stick around to hear the emotional recap of a beautiful DFL finish. What would you do when you had zero minutes to spare at an aid station?

Congratulations to these three for an amazing race, and thank you to Gnar Runners for an unforgettable experience. And finally, congratulations to Kathleen’s husband, Jason Hanley of Wildsense Goods, on finishing Bigfoot 200!

14 Feb 2024Black Canyon 100 Mile Challenge with Matt Leake01:29:33

This week on the HappyCast, we sit down with one of the very few finishers of the Black Canyon 100 mile challenge, and frequent HappyCast pot-stirrer, Matt Leake. Yes, that one.

Black Canyon Ultras in Arizona is one of the biggest and most competitive trail running races in North America, and they have both a 100k on Saturday and a 60k on Sunday. With over 1400 people doing the race in total, the 100 mile challenge option of doing both 100k and 60k fields less than 50 people each year. Each participant in this challenge must complete the 100k as soon as possible and make it back to the shuttle in time for the start of the 60k on Sunday.

Listen as we hear all about the obstacles and challenges this year’s race proceed. Included a massive snow storm, and an even more massive race delay that put the 100 mile challenge in jeopardy.

We hear all about Matt’s perspective in what he is calling the hardest 100 mile event he has ever participated in. We also hear about other performances, including those not-so-fortunate with their racing performance and overall weekend, and the overall thoughts on the race itself.

So sit back and let’s hear all about Matt’s epic weekend and what makes Black Canyon one of the most rewarding races around today!

28 Feb 2024HappyChat: LOViT 100, the Psychology Around Compliments, and more...01:16:54

This week on the HappyCast, we keep things simple and ramble on about all things trail running with our debut of “HappyChat”.

In the first segment, Stephanie details her amazing and nerve wracking time at the rugged and remote LOViT 100 in Arkansas. She spent her weekend supporting previous guest and manliest runner in the country, Will Bryant. She describes a harrowing scenario where they both got lost with just four miles left to go. What would YOU do in a situation similar to theirs?

In the second segment, the three hosts discuss the use of commonly heard phrases throughout ultrarunning, and the psychology of how runners perceive positive statements during their races in times of emotional lows. Do you enjoy it when others constantly try to build you up when you’re feeling down? Why is it that we can sometimes have a negative reaction to positivity coming from a good place? Do you disagree with Andrew thinking “you looked strong every time I saw you” is overused? What are some phrases and statements you don’t enjoy or DO enjoy hearing out on a run? A divisive segment for sure, but some strong arguments from both sides.

And finally, we shoutout three individuals who participated in the end of year nominees. We read off nominations given by Kathleen Hanley (Tyler Hurst) , Lee Ann (Shashi), and Simon Gueard (Nora). We will be reading off more nominations at the end of the episodes from here on out. Some really amazing stories out there that the community has sent in.

20 Mar 2024Mud Runners: A Grasslands Roundtable with Gus Rodriguez01:17:09

This week on the HappyCast, the crew heads over to the LBJ Grasslands in North Texas to partake in one of the biggest trail racing events in the area - the Grasslands Trail Run. Stephanie, Dylan, and Andrew all participated, and we get to hear about their experiences. From running, pacing, and DNFing straight into crewing, we cover all facets of this event. And during this roundtable discussion, the crew is joined by 100 mile finisher Gus Rodriguez from Houston to talk about his race as well. His experience is something you don’t want to miss!

With Grasslands holding its inaugural 100 mile event this year, and the forecast showing cool weather all day, this would appear to be a borderline perfect day for running, right? Well, Mother Nature decided to stop by and throw a wrench in everyones plans. Grasslands quickly turned into Mudlands, and it became a fight for survival. We talk about the insanely difficult trail conditions, the stories of those pushing through, and the heartbreak that ensued for many. Triumph and emotional endings alike, we go through it all on this episode.

As always, thank you Blaze Trails for holding an impeccably organized event, and many of us can’t wait to return to Grasslands next year. We highly recommend this race, and believe it to be a perfect 100 miler - as long as the weather is in check.

And congratulations to everyone for even attempting this race with the conditions at hand. We’d love to hear more about all of your experiences.

27 Mar 2024The Fastest Two Months in Ultra Running with Hans Troyer01:20:59

This week on a special episode of the HappyCast, we examine what it’s like to “run fast and fly young” with Hans Troyer, an up-and-comer in the ultra running game who was shot out of a cannon and made his presence known in the elite scene with one of the most interesting and intense first two months you’ll hear about in ultra running.

We examine his memorable performance at Bandera 100k - where he broke Jim Walmsley’s course record, but also somehow later DIDN’T break it. This lead to a last minute appearance at Black Canyon 100k - where unfortunate circumstances right before the race made things more challenging than they should have been, and yet, he still got out to an early lead in an extremely competitive field. And, of course, to make this two month stretch even more interesting, we talk about his serious and unfortunate stint in the hospital that almost lasted two weeks.

So sit back and join us in the fast lane as we explore the start of a potentially amazing ultra running career budding before our very eyes. And definitely stick around for the end as we decide to debut an impromptu new segment, “trail math”. And it’s probably not what you were expecting.
