23 Aug 2024220: The Four Tendencies: A framework by Gretchen Rubin00:13:49

In today's solo episode, I delved into the intriguing concept of the Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin. I share my own personal experience of discovering "The Happiness Project" at Powell's Bookstore in Portland, Oregon, which sparked my journey into personal development. This led me to explore Rubin's work and, in particular, "The Four Tendencies."

I discussed the four tendencies: the Obliger, the Upholder, the Questioner, and the Rebel, and how they respond to both internal and external expectations. Understanding these tendencies can shed light on how we meet expectations and interact within our work environments.

Knowing your tendency can provide valuable insights into how you approach tasks, goals, and accountability at work. Are you the Obliger, thriving on external accountability but struggling to meet your internal expectations? Are you the Upholder, readily meeting both inner and outer expectations? Perhaps you resonate with the Questioner, challenging external expectations to transform them into internal motivations. Or maybe you identify with the Rebel, navigating a unique approach to expectations by finding identity in personal choices.

The main points throughout this podcast include:

  • The four tendencies: the Obliger, the Upholder, the Questioner, and the Rebel.
  • How the four tendencies respond to both internal and external expectations
  • How we meet expectations and interact within our work environments.
  • The importance of personal development for success.

This framework can profoundly impact teamwork, productivity, and overall workplace happiness. I encourage you to reflect on the tendencies and share your thoughts. Which tendency resonates with you, and how can understanding it empower you to achieve your professional goals?

17 Nov 2023182: Building Better Bosses with Debra Corey00:47:05

Are you worried about being an ineffective leader?

In this week's episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with Debra Corey, a dynamic speaker and expert in the field of employee engagement and HR. Debra opened up a discussion about power dynamics at work, particularly focusing on the concept of hoarding information. She explained how hoarding information can be a power play, with individuals deliberately withholding knowledge and positioning themselves as gatekeepers. The negative impact of this behaviour on colleagues and overall team morale cannot be underestimated.

During our conversation, Debra highlighted the importance of distinguishing between different types of bosses. On one hand, there are those who simply don't care about the harm they may cause to their team members. On the other hand, there are well-intentioned bosses who may be unaware of the negative impact they have on others.

Debra shared personal experiences of working with terrible bosses who fell into both categories. To tackle this issue, Debra suggested the importance of educating people on being great bosses and fostering self-awareness. It's essential for individuals to understand the impact they have on their team and to create an environment where open and honest feedback is encouraged.

Debra mentioned that sometimes people may be afraid to give direct feedback, and it got us thinking about how we can create a safe space for such conversations. One fascinating point Debra brought up was the power of humour in diffusing tense situations. She believed that humour could play a role in turning a difficult situation into something that can be laughed about and learned from. We couldn't agree more - finding ways to bring lightness into our work lives can make a significant difference in our overall happiness.

In addition, Debra stressed the importance of setting clear expectations and practising effective communication. This includes being transparent about the time required for tasks and projects, as well as the level of quality expected. By reducing ambiguity, we can avoid confusion, overdelivering, or unnecessary stress.

She also mentioned her upcoming book, in which she interviews 24 thought leaders to gain even more insights into workplace dynamics. We can't wait to get our hands on it and learn from her valuable findings.

The main points throughout this podcast include:

  • The negative impact of hoarding information
  • Distinguishing between different types of bosses
  • The importance of educating people on being great bosses and fostering self-awareness
  • The power of humour in diffusing tense situations
  • Setting clear expectations and practising effective communication

14 Mar 2025247: Navigating the Drama Triangle at Work with Aoife O’Brien00:12:18

What is the drama triangle and how can you get out of it at work?

In this solo episode of the Happier at Work podcast, I dive deep into the psychological concept of the drama triangle, developed in the 1960s. Often unrecognisable at first glance, these unconscious patterns involve the roles of the victim, the persecutor, and the rescuer. I discuss how these dynamics can impact workplace culture, relationships, and overall career progression, and provide insights into recognising these roles and transforming them into more positive interactions.

I share some of my own personal experiences and provide  practical strategies for shifting out of these roles. By moving from victim to creator, transforming persecutors into challengers, and reframing the rescuer's impulse into supportive guidance, you can become equipped with the tools to break free from these limiting patterns. This episode is a must-listen if you’re aiming to create a healthier, more constructive workplace environment.

The Main Points:

  • Understanding the roles within the drama triangle: victim, persecutor, and rescuer.
  • Recognising patterns of behaviour affecting workplace culture and personal growth.
  • Transitioning from victim mode to creator mode for personal empowerment.
  • Shifting from being a persecutor to becoming a challenger to support others better.
  • Reframing the rescuer role to offer supportive guidance rather than taking over.
  • Learning the impact of micromanagement and gossip in perpetuating the drama triangle.
  • Practical tips for improving communication and responsibility within team dynamics.

In this episode, Dan emphasises the importance of ensuring that tasks are completed before diving into efforts to improve culture and employee experience. By prioritising the delivery of work, leaders create the space necessary for improvement initiatives.

First-line leaders have a crucial role in advocating for their team's needs and professional development. By recognising and highlighting team achievements, as well as advocating for their needs, leaders can create a supportive and inclusive work environment.

Taking personal responsibility for learning and development is crucial for career growth. Dan encourages individuals to find multiple ways to learn and to advocate for more time within organisations to focus on personal development.

Dan acknowledges the challenges that first-time managers face, including a lack of upfront training and the broken rung on the career ladder for women. He encourages first-time managers to believe in themselves, take ownership of their learning, and seek out opportunities for growth.

02 Aug 2024217: How Can We Identify and Overcome Self-Sabotage Behaviours at Work?00:15:43

In this week's solo episode of the Happier at Work podcast, I delved into the various ways we tend to hinder our own success. I shared personal examples and insights on how we can identify and overcome these obstacles that hold us back in our careers.

I pointed out several mindsets and behaviors that can block our progress, such as playing the victim, fearing judgment or failure, people-pleasing, feeling superior, being on a power trip, adopting a scarcity mindset, falling into complacency, and embracing a martyr complex. These are hurdles we might not often recognise within ourselves, but it's important to bring awareness to these patterns.

One poignant example I shared was about encountering someone with a strong sense of entitlement. I explained how this individual expected special treatment and seemed to believe that others should cater to his needs without reciprocation. This powerful real-life example highlighted the negative impacts of entitlement on relationships and success.

I also emphasised the importance of humility and recommended the book "The Go-Giver," which illustrates the transformative power of focusing on helping others without expecting anything in return.

The main points throughout this podcast include:

  • The various ways we tend to hinder our own success.
  • How we can identify and overcome the obstacles that hold us back in our careers.
  • The negative impacts of entitlement on relationships and success.
  • The importance of humility.

Now, let's dive into some thought-provoking book recommendations from our host, Aoife. She recently read "The No Asshole Rule" by Robert Sutton, which delves into the impact of toxic behaviour in the workplace. While we must warn you of some ‘spicy’ language in the book, its main message is essential. We all have the potential to be assholes in certain environments, but we can actively work to create positive work cultures and stamp out disrespectful behaviour. Aoife shares personal experiences and takeaways, shedding light on the importance of addressing these issues head-on. If you've ever felt mistreated or experienced workplace bullying, this book might offer some valuable insights.

Another book that caught Aoife's attention is "It Doesn't Have to Be Crazy at Work" by Jason Fried. With a title that speaks for itself, this book challenges conventional business practices and offers alternative perspectives on success. From fixed pricing for everyone to rejecting quarterly targets, Jason Fried presents a refreshing approach to creating a sustainable, fulfilling work environment. If you're tired of the stress and chaos that often dominate workplaces, this book might provide a fresh perspective and help you find ways to create a healthier work-life balance.

27 Oct 2023179: Exploring Flexibility and Personal Preferences with Molly Johnson-Jones00:47:35

How do you make flexibility work for you?  In today’s episode of the Happier at Work podcast, host Aoife O’Brien is joined by Molly Johnson-Jones, founder of Flexa. Molly shares her experiences and thoughts on the topic of flexibility at work, a subject that has been gaining momentum and transforming the way we approach work-life balance.

Molly's take on flexibility revolves around the idea of setting boundaries and finding the perfect balance between work and personal life. She highlighted the importance of creating a flexible work environment that allows individuals to thrive by adapting their schedules to meet their individual needs.

One key aspect Molly touches upon was the misconception that flexibility means constantly being available or working longer hours. She emphasised the need for intentional planning and embracing the freedom to take time off when work is complete, rather than searching for unnecessary tasks to fill the day. Taking personal time and rejuvenating is just as important as being productive during work hours.

Molly also discusses the varying perspectives on flexibility among different generations. As millennials continue moving into leadership roles, she predicts a higher rate of acceptance and adoption of remote work practices. However, fear of the unknown and the traditional face-to-face interactions valued by older generations can still influence the desire to return to the office.

Molly sheds light on the challenges faced by larger corporations in implementing organisational transformations due to their size. However, she stressed the importance of flexibility in attracting diverse talent and improving engagement and productivity. By being transparent about their flexible work offerings, companies can drive change and pioneer new approaches that meet the needs of their employees.

The main points throughout this podcast include:

- creating clear expectations and boundaries

- the need for effective communication regarding availability and online presence

- the consequences for not meeting performance expectations

- intentional management and self-awareness

- adapting work styles to fit individual preferences

- finding productive environments that suit each person's needs

- asking employees how they prefer to be managed and tailoring leadership styles accordingly

How can you overcome perfectionism and people pleasing at work?

In the latest episode of the Happier at Work podcast, I sat down with the extraordinary Ellen Taaffe to delve deep into the intricacies of women's leadership and personal growth. Ellen, with her vast experience spanning a 25-year corporate career, board memberships, and her current teaching role at Kellogg School of Management, brings a wealth of knowledge and actionable insights to the table.

During the episode, Ellen also discusses the challenges posed by perfectionism and the tendency to eagerly please others. She shares insights on how these can lead to being viewed merely as a "worker bee" and holding back from leadership opportunities.

Ellen’s work at the Kellogg School of Management emphasises the need for community and support among women. Ellen's research and teaching help bridge gaps specific to women in the workplace, addressing challenges like negotiating raises and overcoming biases.

Ellen’s book, "The Mirror Door: Breakthrough the Hidden Barrier That Locks Successful Women in Place," celebrates its one-year anniversary and has received multiple awards. It explores how self-reflection and internal doubts can prevent women from advancing and emphasises the importance of courage over confidence.

The main points:

  • How perfectionism and people pleasing can lead to being viewed merely as a "worker bee" and holding back from leadership opportunities.
  • It's essential to balance preparation with timely action.
  • While building strong relationships is vital, it should not come at the expense of your personal needs and boundaries.

How can you look after your wellbeing in the workplace?

In this week's episode of the Happier at Work podcast, I delved into the concept of workplace wellbeing and addressed some of the critical factors that can hinder it. As we celebrate National Workplace Well-being Day in Ireland, it's important to recognise the challenges that may impede our well-being at work and take actionable steps to mitigate them.

One of the primary hindrances to workplace wellbeing is workload. Feeling overloaded with work, working excessive hours, and struggling to achieve work-life balance can significantly impact our well-being. I emphasised the importance of distinguishing between self-inflicted workload and workload imposed by external factors such as organisational demands and client needs. Additionally, she offered practical strategies for managing workload, including setting clear priorities, monitoring time spent on tasks, and learning to say no when necessary.

Recognising our own achievements and finding support within the organisation were also highlighted as crucial in fostering workplace wellbeing. I shared insights on navigating conflicts, seeking opportunities for personal and professional development, and identifying and addressing toxic work environments.

It's essential to create a workplace culture that values well-being and provides support for all employees. I encourage you to actively engage in open and honest conversations with managers, colleagues, and HR to address challenges and foster a culture of respect and support.

  • The challenges that may impede our well-being at work and take actionable steps to mitigate them.
  • The importance of distinguishing between self-inflicted workload and workload imposed by external factors such as organisational demands and client needs
