21 Apr 2021 | How publicity works in the book world with Isabelle O’Brien (Allen & Unwin) | Ep 32 | 00:49:09
So you wrote a book - amazing. But the work’s not done yet. How do you get people to write about YOU and what you created? Publicity for books is a topic that Isabelle O’Brien of Allen & Unwin knows inside and out. Despite swearing she would never go into PR, thanks to her mum’s own career as a book publicist, today Isabelle is the Publicity Manager at Australia’s largest independent publishing house. I couldn’t wait to hear what this smart cookie had to say about getting media coverage for books, after I worked on the launch of the Farmer cookbook in 2018, a book that portrayed life for Australia’s farmers and also raised money for those living in drought. Having never worked on a book publicity campaign prior to farmer, I knew I got bluddy lucky with the incredible coverage I secured (it really pays to have a great product!).
In this episode Isabelle talks about the ingredients that go into an excellent book pitch, how far out she starts talking to media, and what her process is for researching which outlets might be interested in a book (hint: there’s a bit of social media stalking that goes on here!).
Isabelle also shares her advice for authors feeling nervous about media and introduced me to the term “bookstagrammer”, which sounds like the most fun job in the world but also a super valuable source of influencer love for authors out there.

Today we're joined by Steve Hui, also known as "The Points Whisperer" and founder of iflyflat.com.au. Over 12 years ago, Steve cracked the code to unlock how to fly business and first class on the cheap.
I invited Steve to the podcast because I have seen his name everywhere. From ARF, news.com.au, Sky News, The Project, you name it - he’s been featured there. With over 40k followers on Linkedin, and a hungry audience of travellers looking to stretch out their leggies, I’m not surprised that he’s so well loved by media.
Now, Steve is a bit of the dream when it comes to PR - this guy has never ever pitched a media story or paid for a publicist. Instead journalists and producers are often chasing him for comment.
Why? Because he’s always providing tips and hacks to help other folks fly flat at a fraction of the price - his website suggests for us business owners - you could be flying 2x per year business class…so why wouldn’t you check him out.

08 Jun 2021 | How to pitch to your local paper | David Kirkpatrick, The Northern Star | Ep 35 | 00:51:56
Outside of the big-name media outlets, there are dozens of local news agencies that tell the stories of their local communities. David Kirkpatrick is editor-in-chief of my own local news source, The Northern Star, which has been in business reporting on the happenings of the Northern Rivers in New South Wales for a whopping 145 years. He’s been doing his thing as a journalist and, briefly, a publicist for 34 years.
Those of us living in rural and regional areas know local news outlets are a vital part of the community.
But they’re also a valuable place for small businesses and local entrepreneurs to earn some media coverage that directly reaches a local audience. Make them a part of your media strategy and you’re in for some PR gold.
So what makes David Kirkpatrick’s ears prick up as an editor?
He shared with me the value of a great subject line to catch the eye of busy journalists, the ideal length of a press release and why he doesn’t mind a bit of persistence - as long as you’re not pushy!

Everyone needs a sprinkle of Abbey Stuart when they enter the PR industry. She’s a dynamo with confidence, conviction and creativity in spades. It was this drive and determination that had her cold calling The Nine Network for a job at the tender age of 21. Abbey has packed a lot into her four years as a communications professional. At The Nine Network she was the publicist for Getaway and also drove publicity for Married at First Sight, The Block, Ninja Warrior and Love Island Australia. In her current role as an Account Director at Sabio, she’s led countless campaigns across the consumer, hospitality, tourism, not for profit, tech and medtech sectors. Oh, and she recently took home an award at the 2021 PRIA Golden Target Awards, winning bronze in the Emerging Leader of The Year category. We covered A LOT of territory in today’s chat from how to break in and stand out in the industry to damage control when you’ve burnt your bridges with an important journalist. Plus, as someone that, to use Abbey's own analogy, ‘isn’t afraid to pop her joggers on’, she lets us in on her shoe of choice for any self-respecting PR professional. 09 Feb 2023 | A look Inside the largest women's podcast network in the world with Lize Ratliff | Ep 60 | 00:39:40
Mamamia placed an intelligent bet on podcasting, right at the moment that its second, more commercialisable (if that’s a word…) wave was approaching. With 52 shows and over 250 million lifetime downloads, the publication now holds the largest independent podcast network in Australia and the largest women's podcast network in the world. I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with the woman at the helm of it all, Lize Ratliff, Head of Podcasts & Deputy Editorial Director at Mamamia. Despite her enormous responsibilities, Lize will always remain part of the creative process, or as she likes to put it, still able to ‘make the things’ whilst fulfilling her management role. Lucky for us she doesn’t skimp on any details, Lize walks us through Mamamia's creative process and how new podcasts are created through to the daily management of the shows. You’ll want to hang around as Lize lets us in on her vetting process when she’s on the hunt for podcast talent and what makes an amazing pitch (no generic pitches ploise’).

In this episode I walk you through exactly how to get your big ideas media ready. I give you my own 5 step process as a publicist and PR mentor to stretch your big idea.
I don’t want to oversell it but I genuinely believe our stories can change the world. But if no one knows about them, we can’t create impact.
Often, we wake up in the middle of the night and jot down an idea. When we attempt to elaborate on it the next day, we realise that it's a hot take, a perspective that many others already agree with and have already vocalised.
In this episode you’ll learn to observe the media landscape with a critical lens, how to refine and disqualify your ideas so you’re not pitching a basic b!tch concept and what the substantiation process looks like when you get to the pointy end of validating your idea.
It’s not an overnight process, but one piece of really deep thought leadership research will give you rich content to lean on at every touch point, from your initial pitch to presentations, media interviews and inclusions within your book.

06 Aug 2021 | The secret sauce for viral news success with Velvet Garvey | Ep 38 | 00:48:13
Velvet Garvey is not too shabby when it comes to telling a story and sourcing the essential ingredients to conjure up a firecracker of a headline. It is of no surprise then, when Velvet pitched to Channel 7 during Hack Your Own PR that her story snowballed into a viral success. Velvet is the founder of Train My Mate, a platform that offers housework classes for men. She came up with the concept after leaving her beloved career as a medical editor, to become a stay at home parent. Velvet was horrified to discover that motherhood actually equated to housework. Feeling frustrated, she began to explore the concept of domestic labour and discovered that both the research and other women agreed: in the 21st century, women in relationships do the majority of housework and childcare, to the detriment of their relationships. And so she created Train My Mate as a place for men to learn housework through fun and practical courses so that they can better support their partners and themselves. And thanks to some well incredible research and groundwork, Train My Mate was featured on Channel 7 News, Sunrise, Studio 10, Triple M and the Daily Mail to name a few. If you are wondering what the secret sauce is for viral news success, this episode is for you.

Journalism was his gig for a good number of years before he leapt to the ‘dark side’ and he’ll tell it to you straight – his hugely successful business, The Media Accelerator, is best described as ‘the accidental agency’. And yet, it’s a move that’s proved to be both fruitful and rewarding for Polites, who to this day gets a “real rush” from pitching a story successfully and being able to deliver that story. Coming up with the concept, executing it, getting a journalist interested in it – Polites says there’s “something that’s akin to being able to publish a real successful story as a journalist in that PR process”. And while he’s the first to admit he’s made his fair share of mistakes along the way – because that’s human after all – Polites is too happy to share what he’s learnt during his time on the dark side. 05 Aug 2022 | Gen Z and the news cycle with Crystal Andrews from Zee Feed | Ep 46 | 00:55:15
I could have chatted to today’s guest for hours. Not that Crystal Andrews, a journalist and editor who has worked for some of the biggest media brands such as Who What Wear, POPSUGAR and Daily Mail Australia, has hours to spare. She’s too busy running Zee Feed, an online publication aimed at Gen-Z that critically analyses current news and trends. Ditching the 24/7 news cycle and doomscolling through an endless stream of hot takes, Zee Feed offers its audience the in-depth context that’s sorely missing from many of today’s media conversations. A textbook Millennial, Crystal was intrigued to hear how her younger sister’s friends accessed news content. This Gen-Z cohort was masthead agnostic, preferred to source news through Instagram and TikTok and as a result, had less insight into the various media contexts, agendas and biases. Enter Zee Feed. Through its comprehensive explainers and considered opinion pieces on everything from Roe v Wade to why Elon Musk is so ergh, Zee Feed elevates current media stories, taking the time to get to the core of an issue. Where most publications want to be the first, Zee Feed will wait for days before deciding if something is worth covering. Crystal is a true visionary in the Australian media landscape who is transforming the way we consume news into something more intentional and critical. Today’s chat is a fascinating dive into how the media works and how it can be improved. It also asks the big questions like ‘Is it natural for humans to be consuming so much content?’ Listen today where you get your favourite podcasts.

14 Apr 2020 | Pitching to Network 10’s The Project with Georgia Done | Ep 4 | 00:44:09
Want to learn exactly how to pitch a news story to The Project? I’m not going to lie. EVERY single client I’ve ever worked with has had The Project as their number one target for their media campaigns. So you can bet I was pretty damn pumped with I recorded this podcast.
In this episode, I sat down (in lockdown) with Georgia Done a field producer for Australia’s award-winning current affairs program, The Project.
We cover:
Prior to joining The Project, Georgia worked as a producer and reporter for 7 News which took her all over Queensland from Brisbane, Bundaberg, Rockhampton and Hervey Bay.
Georgia and I enjoyed a meandering isolation chat that covered everything from life before corona, the essential element she needs to create a great story, what goes on behind the scenes when pitching her own stories to her bosses and the simple formula to a great pitch for The Project.

25 Jul 2021 | Winning stories with The Age, Mamamia and ABC Conversations with Hack Your Own PR graduate, Annabel Bower | Ep 36 | 00:40:35
Annabel Bower is a Hack Your Own PR graduate who’s been featured in Sunday Life (The Age/Sydney Morning Herald), Mamamia, ABC Conversations.
But she didn’t just end up there by chance: she actively sought out this media coverage.
After experiencing a devastating still birth with her fourth child, Miles, Annabel was confronted with a totally unique experience of grief that few people could relate to. She decided to use her loss to write a book for other parents going through similar experiences. Miles Apart is a guide to navigating grief after baby loss, with chapters from Annabel and other parents on how they coped.
Stepping into the spotlight with such an emotional story was no easy feat, but Annabel has been superhuman every step on her PR journey with me in the Hack Your Own PR program. And her determination and passion to get more awareness for this important topic have paid off, as her roll call of media coverage shows.
I wanted to ask Annabel how she pulled off some of her impressive media coverage so I asked her for all the steps of her pitching process, how she keeps up with the news related to her area of expertise, and how she stays calm and mentally resilient when pitches get knocked back.
Small business owners, tune in for some seriously wise words from this hack your own pr graduate.

05 Nov 2020 | How to handle your own PR with Jules Brooke | Ep 22 | 00:49:57
Handle your own PR, hack your own PR - whatever you want to call it, sharing the fundamental skills of public relations with small business owners is the thing I live for. But it turns out I'm not alone. That theory about no original ideas being left in the world was shown to me to be true recently, when I found out about Handle Your Own PR, a Melbourne business that's been offering PR mentoring to small businesses and entrepreneurs for 12 years.
Founder Jules Brooke got in touch with me and, rather than threatening or strong-arming me for being a copycat, she wanted to collaborate. After all, she pointed out, we both have the same mission, don't we?
We decided to chat through our different approaches to PR mentoring and make it an episode for my podcast. I couldn't have asked for a better experience than the one I had with Jules, and for that I'm so grateful.
Take a listen as we compare various PR tactics, spitball different approaches and ideas, and hear about Jules's journey from running a PR agency to being a PR mentor to all kinds of small business owners. Jules is also kind enough to share some of her key pieces of wisdom from a career that far outstrips my own.

05 May 2021 | Meet the PR that media professionals use: Katy Denis | Ep 33 | 00:51:04
Who do you hire to do your PR when you work in the media business? Well, if you trust the opinion of executives at Clemenger BBDO, Leo Burnett and other world-class agencies, you turn to Katy Denis.
Katy is a PR specialist with 20 years experience, and the founder and CEO of Extollo, an agency that works hard to raise the profile of media professionals among their peers. Representing personalities like Todd Sampson of The Gruen Transfer, Laura Aldington of Havas Media and other big names in media and advertising, Katy has nailed the formula for thought leadership and building your visibility with a variety of tactics.
I knew Katy would have a treasure trove of tactics that entrepreneurs and small biz owners could take advantage of in their own PR outreach.
We talked through the art of strategic stalking (including how long Katy stalked her dream client before winning them over), and how she cements quality relationships with journalists. Spoiler alert: they’re just like other relationships - you give what you get!
Katy also gives the lowdown on what thought leadership is and why it’s gold dust for businesses of all shapes and sizes that want to build their profile.
Plus Katy shared her advice on how to dip your toe into the media space if you’re not comfortable yet, and I got to hear about how she brushed up against a Big Brother controversy early in her career. I know!
For a smart, strategic and extremely well-reasoned approach to PR, Katy Denis is essential listening.

26 Nov 2020 | How to pitch to the Good Weekend with Katrina Strickland | Ep 24 | 00:42:07
Throughout my teens, my sisters and I would fight to steal the Good Weekend magazine from the kitchen table on Saturday morning. We would savour the intellectual commentary on societies emerging issues, satiate our thirst for knowledge of the culture beyond the four walls of our young existence, and we were fascinated by the interesting dynamics and relationships featured in the Two of Us profiles. To say this magazine is embedded in the DNA of my coming of age is an understatement. Good Weekend continues to play an everpresent and intertwined role in my thirst for expansion and growth. And while I may not have been the target GW audience in my teens, as each passes by I find myself closer to its core demographic and valuing the words in her pages evermore. In this conversation with Katrina Stickland, Good Weekend editor, we explore all of the things that make this iconic, stalwart of Australian culture, tick. On every page, we bear witness to the investment in high-quality journalism, stories built upon layers of research, edits, feedback rounds and then more edits, until they’re shaped into meandering chats between family, friends and water cooler conversations to mark a time in history. If you have a product or story that will delight Australians with a taste for the finer things in life then you will want to tune into this podcast, but also, read at least ten weekends worth of the Good Weekend, before pitching your story.

28 Jul 2021 | Pitching and snacks with Mamamia Executive Editor, Leigh Campbell | Ep 37 | 00:39:53
Leigh Campbell is the executive editor of Mamamia and host of the podcast, You Beauty. She’s also a snack influencer - yep that’s a thing and mamma to her little man.
Leigh has worked in lifestyle media for 15 years, holding positions as Beauty Director at Cosmopolitan, Head of Lifestyle for HuffPost before joining Mamamia in 2018.
At Mamamia she oversees the whole editorial offering but still writes about her favourite stuff - fashion, food, wellness, travel, homewares and of course, beauty.
Leigh sits in the new breed of journalists who have some significant social clout. She’s steadily built a sizable audience of her own via Instagram. And there’s a good reason why: she’s funny, open, playful and accessible in her articles, podcasts and social posts.
And yes, she’s built quite the name as a Snackfluencer, reviewing all of our fave supermarket snacks on her Instagram and they go OFF.
In this episode, we explore how important the profile of a journalist is to media outlets, what she’s looking for in a product pitch and how important the story of the creator is, versus the story of the product.
If you’re a beauty business or snack brand, you’ll want to tune into this episode.

10 Jul 2023 | How to pitch to PRIMER with Anna Saunders | Ep 76 | 00:59:32
Anna Saunders is a highly celebrated, clever as-all-get-out co-founder of PRIMER, Australia’s first digital media social enterprise, and studio PRIMER. I will say that hand on heart, I bluddy love PRIMER and all that it stands for. PRIMER is a women’s media platform with an intelligent and sensitive handling of gritty, messy and often not spoken about social issues with an equally talented eye for glossy high fashion stories. The high quality stories are embedded in an ecosystem of impact (they donate 50% of profit to organisations supporting at-risk women and girls). When it comes to understanding the multifaceted, multi-interested women of today, I think PRIMER have really nailed its niche. Anna’s career spans NZ’s social affairs newsrooms, British marie claire, The Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine (UK) and as executive editor of marie claire Australia. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, and even if we veered off track a lil, if you’re a smart fashion or lifestyle brand, someone with a powerful first-person narrative, or an expert with advice to share PRIMER is the ideal place to pitch your stories.
