It’s all about flexibility and adaptability …….

Sometimes the smartest person in the conversation , is the one not speaking !

Being flexible , is sometime the most difficult thing to do . Have you ever heard two hair colorists arguing over the “Color Wheel” ?

Absolutely , and that’s a “universal law” !

A universal law of “Physics” !

So , if we argue over that , think about the multitude of subjects that can create such controversy.

Being flexible does not mean always giving in. It means having a willingness to adjust behaviors without giving up you core beliefs.

Adaptability is the other half of that equation……

A willingness to adapt , if necessary , to achieve the goal , to stay relevant , to insure transfer of the message.

Have you heard ?

There seems to be a belief out there that "wet balayage" (Applying your lightener to wet hair instead of dry hair) allow you to lighten the hair faster.

If speed is your only concern , then , you do you !

However , there are a few things you might want to know.

1. When hair is wet , it is in it's weakest state, because it has lost 1/3 of it's strength (Hydrogen bonds) and this make it very susceptible to more damage than it normally exposed to. Imagine pulling or stretching wet hair and then applying the most aggressive solution in hair color to that stressed fiber.

2. Using lightener on wet hair will exponentially increase damage ! Even though you may not see it.....don't believe me , do a tensile strength test on the hair after the lightening service and see for yourself.

3. Science teaches us that water will actually dilute the action of a bleach mixture by affecting the developer. Not the powder.

They “self sabotage “ any relationship because they are convinced that something will go wrong down the line and in order to avoid disappointment , they prefer to walk away.

What if I told you that some people find happiness early in their life and “camp out” on that happiness, because they fear they will never find it again.

This , of course , turns into complacency , mediocre , and eventually a very small life.

Here’s a really big secret …….”Happiness is not a person , place , or thing….it’s a mindset”!

Ah , yes ......Concentrates ! 

This product has probably created more confusion and fear than any other product we use , including Bleach !

Why is that ?

Well , it because , in most cases , concentrates are the one family of hair color, that get the least amount of explanation in our industry. Vague explanations and confusing information like "our concentrates have no level"! 

Now , tell that to a hair colorist who was trained in levels and you send them into a tailspin.

That's why the sale of concentrates does not compare to normal hair color sales. Because no one helps the hair colorist understand what they are and how to use them.

Throughout my years behind the chair and as a teacher, I've often been faced with questions that led me down a "rabbit hole" on a journey akin to "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride"—a ride I didn't always want to join. I believe many of these experiences stem from two significant obstacles in our profession.

First, there's a lack of solid foundational education. Second, we see the swift spread of opinions, assumptions, and unfounded information. It seems we love stories and are ready to believe anyone who speaks with conviction. I'm sure you've encountered these sweeping statements that generalize one individual scenario to everyone, particularly when it involves chemical services like hair color, perming, and so on.

I think many of us found that our education emphasized the "how-to" more than the "why" behind chemical services. The science often got glossed over, leaving questions unanswered or met with opinions rather than facts.

Recently, an intriguing topic resurfaced on social media, sparking quite a "firestorm." Surprisingly, many female hairdressers aren't well-versed in this particular subject. Old School ?

What exactly is that ?

What does that mean ?

Originally , this term was used to refer to something from the past that would bring back memories of those time. However that reference has been skewed in the Hair Color business and now many times is used to discount , downplay , or diminish some of the procedures of the past.

The problem is that the one thing that has not changed at all is the very structure we work with everyday . The hair !

It’s still a physical , visual , and chemical structure comprised of :

Carbon , Oxygen , Hydrogen , Nitrogen , and Sulfur.

In this episode we will discuss some “social media” comments that attempt to diminish the filling or pre-pigmentizing procedure and dare to declare that filling un-even hair strands is unnecessary in todays world of hair color.

This , of course is nonsense !

I am constantly amazed by the number of times we need to revisit this information, which I believe is due to the indoctrination of the marketing story surrounding this product. 

Since its introduction in 1988, when "Demi-Permanent" became part of the hairdresser's language, the narrative has remained distorted. 

Even after forty years, salon professionals continue to endorse those misinterpreted claims.

Let's set the record straight: before 1988, when this product type entered the beauty industry, we already had various hair color services. 

We used techniques such as foiling, frosting caps, and other tools that allowed us to achieve multidimensional results. Following that, we would tone the hair with "permanent hair color." 

Yes, you read that right!

Nowadays, there seems to be plenty of confusion around the concept of demi-permanent hair color. 

Its actual benefits and purpose often get overshadowed by misconceptions perpetuated by the industry. 

It's time to debunk the myths and clear the air about this product category.

Since many of us witnessed the debut of 'demi colors,' it might be interesting to learn how we managed without this widely-used product that now dominates our industry.

But here's something to ponder: 'Demi Permanent' hair color types are not always the perfect solution. 

In some cases, choosing this type of product may not achieve the desired outcome.

Tragedies have a way of leaving an indelible mark on our lives, etching themselves into our memories forever. 

Everyone has their story about 9/11, one of the most tragic events in our country's history, and the impact it had on their lives.

 But what strikes me as significant is that this tragedy has become a generational story now, with a whole generation being born after that fateful day. 

It's natural for the impact to lessen as we move further away from an event.

Today, I am grateful to my teaching partner, Max Maisano, for giving me the opportunity to share my story, for I was in New York City on that day - a day that forever changed my life. 

As the time nears every year, I find myself becoming more introverted and quiet, reflecting on those difficult moments that are hard to put into words.

Being in such close proximity to such mass devastation can undeniably alter one's perspective and transform their life forever. It is something we carry within us, an experience that shapes our thoughts, actions, and emotions.

Now, as I witness a new generation learning about the events of 9/11 through textbooks, documentaries, and stories passed down, I can't help but feel the importance of sharing our personal narratives.

 By doing so, we ensure that the memories and lessons from that day continue to resonate with future generations, reminding them of the importance of unity, compassion, and resilience during times of adversity.

Let us remember and honor those who lost their lives on that tragic day, and let us strive to create a world where such events are no longer a part of our reality. 

Together, we have the power to shape a future where love triumphs over hate and where unity prevails.

Twenty-two years have passed since the fateful event that shaped my life, leading me to reflect on my story. 

Today, I find solace in sharing this brief account, honoring the promise we made to each other: to “Never Forget”.

Originally , this term was used to refer to something from the past that would bring back memories of those time. However that reference has been skewed in the Hair Color business and now many times is used to discount , downplay , or diminish some of the procedures of the past.

The problem is that the one thing that has not changed at all is the very structure we work with everyday . The hair !

It’s still a physical , visual , and chemical structure comprised of :

Carbon , Oxygen , Hydrogen , Nitrogen , and Sulfur.

In this episode we will discuss some “social media” comments that attempt to diminish the filling or pre-pigmentizing procedure and dare to declare that filling un-even hair strands is unnecessary in todays world of hair color.

This , of course is nonsense !

Ask yourself , how many times have you had a color result develop unevenly or develop darker than you expected ?

I am sure you can agree that this procedure is , not only important , but essential to your hair color skills.

Hello Friends : In this episode , I take a moment to share my purpose in writing my new book , "Captain Color vs. The Pigment Pirates".

For those who are not familiar with my history in the beauty business , I wanted to give them a little insight about what "triggered" me to write this book and a little history on what I call Pigment Pirates"

Some information that challenges your belief system and things you have been taught.

In this episode, Max and I discuss a recent adventure in a meeting that brings us back to the familiar subject of protein. We all use "protein" in our everyday vocabulary, but many in our profession still don't fully understand it.

A friend of mine described it this way: it's like a driver's license. Just because you pass a test and get your driver's license doesn't mean you're a great driver. It means you have enough knowledge to keep you out of too many crashes.

Just knowing is not enough. As hairdressers, we have to seek a deeper understanding of the medium we work with: the chemicals we apply and the tools we use. It's through continuous discovery that we can truly master our craft.
