09 Aug 20227. Simplifying Sustainability with Rebecca Lewis00:50:11

Rebecca Lewis may look like a very unassuming Physical Therapist, but to me, she's a sustainability super star. She's trying sustainable actions, one by one, to see how she can be more mindful of her footprint on the earth, and responsible for what she uses and tends to. It started in 2021 soon after she moved into her house, and was diagnosed with Long Covid, and was bed bound for months; she needed something to feel productive. It started with a loaf of bread, and then yogurt, and knitting, etc. Rebecca teaches us that some changes can be  small or simple (cloth napkins!), and make a big impact. She also talks about courage to try new things. Listen, and hear more!

16 Aug 20228. GoGo Visit Laura Marston's Zero Waste Store GoGo Refill!00:39:58

I felt like a total imposter even asking Laura Marston to be on the podcast, since I'm so new, but she is so generous, and said yes before I was even live. What a lucky person I am to have been able to have this conversation with her! Laura is so knowledgeable, and so passionate about helping her community make those changes to ditch the plastic in any way that we're able - her store, GoGo Refill, is a low-waste lifestyle mecca in South Portland, Maine - the first of its kind in Maine and New England, and also has the GoGo Van, to bring refill options to areas outside of the city (like mine!), to make it that much more accessible. The products will save you money, and you get high quality, eco-friendly home and body products that will keep plastic containers out of the trash, recycling bins and off the roads! Learn more by listening here!
Check out the awesome store at: https://www.gogorefill.com/
Follow Laura and GoGo Refill on Instagram @ https://www.instagram.com/gogorefill/ or on Facebook at GoGO Refill. If you're in the area, please go to the store - if you're in my area, visit the farmer's market and get some products from the GoGo Van!

13 Sep 202212: The Buzz About Beekeeping with Nicole Caron of Sunny Bee Apiary00:42:26
I met Nicole randomly at Replenova Farm Store, where I sell my jams, this spring, and found out she's a beekeeper, which is fascinating to me, so I instantly(may have come on strong) invited her to chat with me on the podcast, so I could learn all about it. She's got great stories to share, and good prep info for people interested in starting beekeeping.
Nicole has been learning about bees for many years, and took college courses on the subject! She is passionate about educating yourself and having a mentor to be prepared, and to have the best experience, and she tells us all about it here!
Nicole suggested checking out The Honey Exchange in Portland, ME for equipment and info.
If you want to learn more about beekeeping, feel free to contact Nicole on Instagram here, or on Facebook here. Also check out her stunning flowers/flower stand on her pages, or at her house if you're local - made beautiful for the bees and by the bees!

20 Sep 202213: A Homesteading Journey with Alyson Poland of Barefoot North00:42:57

WOW. Alyson really embodies the spirit of homesteading that I dream of, and I'm so glad that we had this conversation recorded for all of us to hear! Alyson is an "Old Soul," and is just so genuine and easy. I love her story so much! She was so generous to share the hard and wonderful parts of her life that got her where she is today, and her outlook on life is so spot on. Take a listen!
Alyson is more than happy to talk homesteading with anyone! Please follow her on Facebook here, or on Instagram here.

27 Sep 202214: Think Again About Food Waste, With Allison Taylor00:34:40

Allison Taylor is a military spouse and mom of 3,  has a teaching degree, and is a copywriter. She espouses a very different food mindset than me, and I'm so glad to have had this conversation about food waste and overconsumption! Her podcast Everybodys Gotta Eat will come out officially in January, but the trailer is already available. As a military family that has moved around, packing (or not packing) and storing food is an important point, and she has such a great message to share. So grateful to have made this connection to open my mind.
Listen to Allison's podcast trailer, Everybody's Gotta Eat here, and be on the lookout for more from her in January!

11 Oct 202217: Thoughts On Community Post Breast Cancer Fundraiser00:14:57

I've always had strong feelings about community, but yesterday I was awestruck when I attended a community event to support our dear friend  Melissa, as she is heading into her 2nd chemo treatment this week. Another friend Emily, owner of Northern Belle Holistic, organized the fundraiser event to support Melissa and her fiance` Ryan as they are just beginning this cancer journey. The outpouring of love and support was inspiring to watch unfold as I viewed the silent auction tables (PLURAL!) and raffle items offered to benefit the cause. Listen here to hear more!
Melissa isn't super active on social media, but she is doing as much as she's able right now, knowing there are so many people rooting for her. You can see some of her journey on Instagram here

Podcasting is so cool! I am so excited that I was able to have this conversation with Bill Yeo- he's so smart and interesting - there will DEFINITELY be more convos with Bill!
Bill is the Community person at LL Bean, which is probably in the top 5 (if not top 3) things people think about when they hear Maine mentioned - hunting, fishing, biking and skiing equipment and clothing - a real outdoors store
Bill built his own house TWICE - both with solar power - he said he's never paid an electric bill in 31 years! Listen to how this all happened!

03 Jan 202327: Ranya Dube's Passion for Sustainable Food for Her Community01:28:13

Sometimes when you meet someone, you know it was just meant to be - Ranya Dube and I hit it off instantly when we met on Facebook a few months ago, and are big  supporters for each other. Ranya is opening her second sustainability-like business, called The Good Food Place in Squamish, British Columbia, a town of about 200 people, and she wants to support local food growers, and encourage her community to eat locally and seasonably - learn why by listening!

This is a longer interview, but I couldn't get enough of what Ranya was saying. When someone is so clearly passionate about their project, I'm a total magnet to that - it's also something that I believe in, so I wanted to soak up all of her wisdom while I had her! So much valuable info was shared, but my favorite memorable thing she said was so simple and also profound. "We need more collaboration and less competition." Mic drop. Done. Right? She and I are in the same groove on so many things, and supporting community through food is definitely one of them!

Please give Ranya a follow on Instagram here or here and be inspired!

I think that Terra Osman is going to change the game for people who want to eat local foods, and I'm so grateful that I had the chance to talk with her about it! Terra developed the Farmish app and website, so that we can  find local providers to support- how beautiful is that? Terra is a website developer who decided this option should be available to search for local foods easier, so she did it. CHECK IT OUT! Share it wide, so that people have a way to sell their excess, and others can find what they need!

24 Jan 202330: Learning About Urban Agriculture with Adam Cohen00:51:43

Adam Cohen is a wealth of knowledge about  many things, and I'm so happy that he is generous enough to share some of that! He finds a way to add agriculture to just about any educational subject - he built garden beds with his class, and taught CEA (don't know what that is? I didn't either, but he'll tell you about it in this episode). He grew gourmet mushrooms and is building his house. I feel so much smarter after this conversation! He verbally offered to help answer any questions, so find him and take him up on it!

31 Jan 202331: Recap After 30 Episodes00:18:14

Publishing episode 30 last week felt like a really big number, so I felt called to recap a bit, and ask for some feedback (and I was on vacation and dropped the ball on recording). What a trip this has been! I've had some really wonderful conversations about sustainability!
Has there been an episode of Grounded in Maine that you loved? Hated? I'd love to know if I'm creating content that you love or not, so I can keep your listening ears! You know who else would love to hear if you loved a conversation? My podcast guests!! I've listed their contact info in my show notes each week - except for two, they're all very social, and I bet it would make their day if you sent them a message, or gave a follow - if you're uncomfortable doing that, you could just let me know(it would make my day, too). I've seen a few friends that have followed a couple of people, and if you could see the smile I feel when I see that...
Do YOU have something you'd like to share?? I'd love to chat sustainability with you!
Thank you for listening each week!

07 Feb 202332: Words of Wisdom From The Reluctant Gardener Carmen Leal00:48:37

This episode with Carmen was so beautiful, and a little long (we were totally geeking out about our love for dogs), so I opted to cut it a little short, to save some money. If you want to geek out with us, I'll be posting the FULL video interview on my new YouTube page ! Carmen was so easy to talk with, and has so much to share - I couldn't bare to not share such wisdom in one form or another.
Carmen is an author of now 11 books, and Created her own publishing company, Wag Away Publishing! Her most recent book is titled I Chose You: Imperfectly Perfect Rescue Dogs and Their Humans. it's the first of a series of 3 books about rescue dogs! We talked about how we could incorporate rescuing dogs into the sustainability subject, and decided it's totally legit. She also had some fun surprise sustainability surprises for me - listen to hear more!

28 Feb 202335: Learning About Spirit Bears and Sustainable Book Publishing with Crystal McIntyre00:44:05

Crystal McIntyre and I met not too long ago on Instagram - I had noticed a calendar of hers on the website of a store in Squamish, BC. When I asked about it, I was directed to her Instagram, and the rest is about as you might expect. But then I learned about Human Design. And Spirit Bears. And sustainable book publishing. Are you thinking "what's Human Design?" I was, too. I thought I had an idea what Spirit Bears were, but no.  Crystal taught me so much that I had never even heard of - learn with me by listening here! Or watch on YouTube(you can see her adorable cat Winnie!)

07 Mar 202336: Asia Sharif Clark - the Benefits of Growing Your Own Fresh Herbs00:53:34

Asia Sharif-Clark is a beautiful soul with so much sparkle - you'll see - I think sparkly fits perfectly! Asia has worked in many capacities in her time, and learned so much - including the benefit of having something grow in your space... Now her focus is teaching people about those benefits, and to make it easy enough to become a reality. She's passionate about finding a place to grow something, whether it be a small garden, a container garden, and having fresh produce to eat - I may have taken her on a little tangent about schools... She's offering a kitchen herb garden workshop coming up on March 18 on Zoom - I took her February workshop, and now I have little cilantro babies growing beside my desk, and tiny little oregano and basil, too! Listen to the episode to get all the deets!
Asia is just such a wealth of life experience and knowledge, and I can't wait for another chance to hang out with her. I highly recommend following Asia on Instagram, for a feed full of green!

21 Mar 202338: Sustainable Interior Design with Elizabeth Byler00:50:24

Have you heard of Sustainable Interior Design? I think I had heard the phrase, but in my head I assumed it meant buying expensive, really well made products. While that is probably an option, it's not possible for everyone, and isn't the only way to look at Interior Design.
Enter Elizabeth Byler, Founder of Eden Environments, who wants to serve those who want to just be really mindful of what they're buying and using, and making it more sustainable personally. This was an eye opener for me, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it! And the story of how they got to this point was completely inspiring. Please listen to the episode to learn more - they can say it better than I can!

28 Mar 202339: Big Living on a Tiny Homestead With Jenny Boghun00:38:13

Jenny was the first person I asked to be a guest on the podcast over 2 years ago, and we've had life stuff that has just conflicted, so this moment, finally getting to sit down and talk homesteading and sustainability and record it for me was just everything.
I met Jenny through a friend on Facebook and I just instantly loved her. I first went to her house to pick up a couple of gourd birdhouses from her, and her chickens at the time ran up to my car to greet me. The first time I actually met her, she showed me her beautiful place, with some furniture she had just thrifted and was fixing up - she's always got big projects under way - and we talked for a long time (she also has a NY accent that just makes you feel embraced). She is just full of smart tips to make life enjoyable. I'm going to have her back to go over the list of 23 Frugal Tips list, because she said she learned every one of them as a child!

Jenny also has a tiny house on her property that was just featured on a Tiny House show, and is trying out renting it this year - learn about it, and her, when you listen!

04 Apr 202340: Celebrating the Extended Life of Things with Megan Dougherty00:51:11

Oh boy, she might be embarrassed when I say this, but Megan is kind of like a celebrity to me, and this was a BIG deal, and so extra fun that she loves to talk about chickens and thriftiness. We met by total chance on Linkedin, commenting on a post of fellow podcaster Jeremy Enns (if you have any thought of podcasting, check him out here ) about our unknown super power, and Megan's answer got my attention, and I reached out...
Megan is the Co-Founder of One Stone Creative, a Business Podcast Production Agency, is the podcast host of The Business Podcast Blueprint Podcast, and hosts a monthly workshop, sharing valuable tips for people in all podcasting roles. The podcast and workshops are so relatable.
She also has chickens and makes things last as long as possible, and has a secret tip for the best pie crust! Interested? Listen here!

11 Apr 202341: Grow With Greg Crafter and Produce'd!00:45:57

Greg Crafter is an inspiration to me - period. He was frustrated by the lack of fresh food his community had, so he started growing it with under his business name Produce'd! Greg  created Grow Blocks, which are in-home hydroponic gardens that let you grow enough fresh, better-than-organic produce to feed 4 people. He also has a podcast called Grow With Greg, talking about - you might have guessed-- growing food - but hydroponically! Learn all about him and his big heart here!

18 Apr 202342: Margaruette Seguin is Leading the Next Generation of Earth Lovers00:43:35

This was so beautiful, I'm just sharing Margaruette's own words - and this is why I wanted so badly to have her as my podcast guest!
" An important part of creating a more environmentally sustainable future is building relationships between the next generation and the non-human world. These relationships are fostered when youth have the opportunity to explore and meaningfully engage with nature. From my childhood to present day, Maine’s forests, beaches, and natural resources have nourished me physically and emotionally. Having had the privilege to experience the benefits of these things has made me eager to both protect them for and share them with those who will come after me. This creates a beautiful chain reaction: sharing the magic of the natural world with the youth I work with connects them more deeply to that world and makes them more likely to share in my desire of protecting it."

I met Margaruette at Replenova Farm Store, where I shop and make jam, and I was smitten with her instantly, and would change my plans if I heard she was around - literally. You'll hear more about her in the episode, and hopefully will totally get why.

02 May 202344: Everett Hanmer: Discovering How Sustainable We Are Naturally!00:37:33

I met Everett Hanmer virtually at a Numospect Media event during Podfest, an international podcast convention, and I was drawn to his love for movies, even though I'm not a big movie watcher; but Everett is the Podcast Host of The Plot Twist Podcast, all about movies! I'm totally hooked on the podcast; sometimes feel like I'm living vicariously and I'm fine for him to do all the work, and sometimes I regret not playing closer attention to Hollywood. I highly recommend The Plot Twist - available everywhere!
I invited Everett to be my podcast guest, and he said "I'm not really that sustainable, but my sister is;" but then the more he thought about it, kept adding things to his list, and he sounds kind of like a sustainability superhero to me - or at least a great example - and a really fun guest. 23 Apr 2023BONUS: "To Which We Belong" Documentary Discussion with Director Pamela Boll01:25:15

I was so excited about the chance to help promote this powerful documentary To Which We Belong, Directed and Executive Produced by Pamela Tanner Boll, and also felt a little intimidated about the subject, so I called on Adam Cohen to help me make the most of the opportunity - so I have TWO guests for this special episode!
This is Pamela's 3rd documentary that she has put out as Director and Executive Producer.
Quote from the website about the film: "The result of regenerative agriculture & ocean farming is more abundance of healthier food all without the need for antibiotics or synthetic fertilizers.

Healthy land, water, and animals = healthy humans."

Pamela was so generous with her time, and sharing this extremely important and urgent message. Please click all the links to  learn more, and SHARE this wide - people need to know about this message, and what we can do to support this movement.
To access the documentary, click this link: https://www.towhichwebelong.com/
Pamela's statement about the documentary is here: https://www.towhichwebelong.com/directors_statement_with_pamela_tanner_boll
Documentary full screening guide is here: https://towhichwebelong.lpages.co/screening-guide/

Adam Cohen was a guest on episode 30 of Grounded in Maine Podcast. He had a business growing 800 lbs of gourmet mushrooms weekly, and teaches his school students how to grow different types of gardens . He specializes in all things urban agriculture, and was the best possible co-host I could've had for this conversation. Go back and listen to episode 30 here:

09 May 202345: Respect For The Earth With Equinox Climbing's Noah Kleiner00:51:25

Noah Kleiner blew my mind so many times during our conversation, and now I can't see him for "a climber," because he is so much deeper-

Noah's work is teaching people rock climbing and ice climbing, but also to respect and appreciate the complexity, and also the simplicity of the world. Noah lives in awe of his surroundings and it's so inspiring to hear about! Literally, I could listen to him tell stories about his experiences for hours!

Noah's business, Equinox Climbing, is out of the Camden, Maine area, but they do climbing adventures anywhere (Acadia National Park anyone?), and they offer summer camps for the young people also!

16 May 202346: Joy Kelly of Chapala Gardens Talks About Growing and Eating More Plants!00:46:42

I found Joy Kelly on Linkedin and was impressed by how active she is there, and when I learned about her rooftop farm I knew I had to have her talk on the podcast. Joy is super passionate about healthy eating, and is doing everything she can to share the message, and I'm here for it all!
Joy has a produce growing tower to make growing your own produce almost foolproof, and she gives funding options when you listen. She also shared some incredible stats that you can see her share on my YouTube channel.
Joy and her daughter Jake have a really entertaining YouTube show of their own called Cook With Jake and Joy, with some really great looking (and easy enough to do for yourself) plant-based foods, and the commentary while doing it will keep you coming back for more. 23 May 202347: Get Outside with Amy Bushatz of Humans Outside Podcast01:04:11

I was stopped in my tracks when Amy Bushatz told me about her project Humans Outside 365 - it was so simple, yet we all have times when we need a break, and basking in the sun just changes your whole outlook, right?

Amy has her own podcast called- you guessed it, Humans Outside. She has done a lot of research, and has talked to so many people (she's got over 300 episodes published!) about the benefits of outside time, and will tell us about just a few of them in this conversation, and, more importantly, what brought her to this place in her life to make this choice and spend so much time talking about it.

Amy is a journalist by trade, and moved her family from Tennessee to Alaska without even visiting. She documents each day/outside 'session' with an Instagram post, so definitely follow her there!

Amy Bushatz and her family since we talked have traveled to Hollywood, CA and the White House to promote a documentary that they were involved in - again, you'll have to check out her Instagram posts to get caught up, but get a good look at Amy and her passion for outside in this episode!

30 May 2023Desiree McCabe Isn't Afraid to Try Anything - In the Best Way!00:47:18

*Disclaimer: we know the sound is not awesome. It was Earth Day, and Desiree was outside to enjoy it. When offered to re-record, she didn't want to take away from the authenticity of the conversation, and I'm honoring that. Please still listen - the message is SO good!*
Desiree and her fiance Davis and I talked about having this chat last OCTOBER while farm stand shopping, and I'm so excited about this finally airing!
I am in awe of people who can say "what's the worst that could happen?" and do whatever thing they want to - I'm such a scaredy cat!
Desiree didn't grow up in a 'homestead-y' home, though she says she remembers her grandmother gardening - we just were young, and weren't thinking about what they were doing as sustainable- it was just a 'grandmothery thing,' so we didn't give any attention. These days, though, Desiree's not only gardening, but she's eating weeds from her lawn - and more!
I just love her attitude about it all, and also ALL that she's doing is such a contrast from where she was, and that impresses me so much.
Desiree works full time, and on weekends you'll find her making the week's bread or kombucha, tending her chickens and garden- and always with her beautiful, super sweet  dog. She also said something so powerful toward the end of this episode that I hope you'll catch!

I love Jackilyn's story of how she started making soaps, for so many reasons!
Jackilyn Ann Arteaga is the Owner of Ann Bath and Beauty Boutique, and she is BUSY! I love that chemical free soap is such a popular item - it gives me hope for us! 21 Jun 2023Happy 1st Birthday to Grounded in Maine Podcast!00:13:56

Wow - I'm so excited that I've officially been a published podcaster for a year! Thank you to all who have listened, been a featured guest and taught me, those who has given feedback and encouragement, been part of my community - thank YOU for the opportunity to share this message of sustainability!

This past year has been nothing short of life changing. I was asked to have a documentary Director on my podcast to promote regenerative agriculture - little old me; a newbie podcaster! I was given the opportunity to sell Amy's Garden Jam to Broadway! I was just invited to host a table at an upcoming conference of Social Workers to share my message of sustainability and community! And I've gotten to meet such stellar people in the podcast space, and in podcast guests!

I'm just a whole lot of grateful for this past year of growth, and am looking forward to continuing to serve and learn to be a better steward of this globe that we call home.
I've had people ask me what my favorite conversations have been so far, and every single person I've spoken with has added to my world in a different way, and there's no reason to make it competitive. It's all so valuable!

Here's to another year of sharing stories of change and working toward community sufficiency, friendship, and learning!

27 Jun 2023A Conversation About Ethical Fashion With Rachael Roberts01:02:58

Rachael approached me to ask if we could promote her ethical, affordable clothing line, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity! I love the ease of this conversation, and I LOVE her ideas! She found a very cool manufacturer near her(Wales) that will take old, even holey clothing back and reuse it! They use natural fibers and dyes, and have a system that doesn't dump into waterways (hallelujah!). Rachael talks about the need for affordability in sustainable clothing, and products in general, which I totally agree with. Her dog Goldie makes an appearance in the YouTube version.

Keep your eye out for these clothes!

04 Jul 202353: Fred Horch Talks About His Sustainability Handbook and Store01:17:49

I had Fred Horch in my mind from the moment I started considering a podcast about sustainability, since I knew that he had a store that carried a ton sustainable home items, and his political ventures were in support of the constituents. Fred owns an energy company called Spark that works with businesses in Maine to update old and  inefficient systems. He also volunteers with our local Rotary group, and at Maine's Common Ground Agricultural Fair, managing the attendees' composted items. Fred's store, FW Horch not only sold goods, but offered free advice how to use the items sold, and how to add other updates - so cool!
Fred is an excellent example of sustainable living, and is a wealth of knowledge -Mainers are lucky to have such great leadership in this field!
This is a longer episode, but I did cut out a little bit to try to be as close to 1 hour as possible; there was just so much for Fred to cover! You can catch the full conversation on YouTube!

Find what Fred's up to at his website here, and subscribe to his handbook to get so much info how to be more sustainable in different ways: https://horchhandbook.com/

11 Jul 202354: Midcoast Vegan's Tim Holland Talks Sustainable Food Choices00:54:48

Tim Holland is a super interesting guy, and I'm so glad for the chance to get to know him! He is a musician, a podcaster and makes kick butt vegan meats and cheeses! I've met Tim a couple of times in the last few years, but got to see a better picture of who he really is in this conversation - he is a man who wears many hats! Husband, dad, rapper, plant enthusiast, gardener, cook, world traveler. I'm sure I missed a bunch of other things, but that's what I remember!

Tim tells the story of how he came to make vegan meats and cheeses, and he makes very popular Italian sandwiches and charcuterie plates with them - a family member of mine told me how incredible the sandwiches are! Listen here for the full conversation, and enjoy the crickets in the background - Tim was outside since everyone in the house was sleeping.

18 Jul 202355: Cool Your Sweats With Cathy Rust01:14:02

WOW, did I learn a ton during this conversation! Cathy Rust and I talked about so many things menopause related, and just people who run hotter would benefit from some of this. We talked about fabrics that are better for your skin and why, and the nightgown that Cathy designed for forks who suffer from night sweats.

Cathy Rust's specialty is in Green Building, so she learned about fabrics in that area, but it sure has come in handy in this venture!

I was telling my husband about the nightgown and the conversation about fabrics, and he asked if there was a t shirt - instead I bought her pillowcases, so I'll report back-

25 Jul 202356: A Touch of Creativity to Change Everything With Philomene Cauchois01:01:34

Philomene Cauchois  is just the most graceful, easy to be with person, and I could've spent hours talking with her. Philomene has her own podcast called Une Touche de Créativité Pour Tout Changer (A Touch of Creativity to Change Everything), to help people to find creative, fun ways to reduce waste and to just tread lighter in the world, and I'm here for it! She's been updating her own website to be ready for this episode to air, knowing that my listeners are mainly English speaking, and she's prepared some really wonderful things, including some of her favorite, regularly used recipes to share! Philomene is practically zero waste, even with 2 sons and a spouse, she makes almost everything, or buys from neighbors or local farms, she repurposes, gardens, homeschools, and really focuses on being light with her footprint. She lives in France, in what looks like a fairytale place called Chanteloup (which is now on my travel bucket list)

Philomene puts out a weekly newsletter that we can subscribe to here: https://creativitytochangeeverything.com/freezerowasterecipe/ this also gets you the free recipes, including her fermented ketchup!

Her facebook page is here:
https://www.facebook.com/unetouchedecreativitepourtoutchanger

And her beautiful Instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/touchedecreativite/

They are both in French, so you can practice, or just close your eyes and enjoy the peace that her language and posts bring.

Veronica Life and I met virtually at Podfest Global in April, when she talked about domestic violence and stole everyone's heart. The Numospect folks that I've been working with for the last year were also affected, and every Friday on their live show (1:30-2:30pm EST on all socials) they have Veronica on to talk about domestic violence, to make it a less taboo subject, because people need to not feel alone in their experiences.

Veronica shares some sobering numbers, as well as her own story, and why we need to make this a priority. What I've been most struck by is her goal to change a person's experience from shame, and leave them feeling JOY and hope. There's a lot of work to get there, but I'm inspired by the work that is happening with The Purple it Up for Domestic Violence Awareness people.

There are many ways to help support this organization! From money donations, to purchasing merch (the shirts are unbelievably comfy!), to offering services or home space for victims, taking the Purple it up Challenge to sharing the message, to being a friend and supporting those who need it.

I'm inspired by the work that Veronica and her team do daily, and want to support them in any way that I can, like featuring a podcast episode on domestic violence. I have taken the pledge to not drop the ball on domestic violence awareness - will you join me?

01 Aug 202357: Merge Impact's Ben Adolph and Beth Robertson Martin Talk Food Sustainability01:06:14

Wow, this was an eye opening conversation for me! I realized that my expectation of food sustainability is very childish (child-like?), thinking that just growing good food and making sure that everyone can eat is all we need to know. Ben Adolph and Beth Robertson-Martin are the Co-Founders of Merge Impact, and they are crunching data to assist farmers in this food system "situation" that we're in, and thank goodness for that! There is really so much more to growing food on a large scale, and what growers have been doing for many years is not nurturing the earth, so Merge Impact is encouraging change to heal the earth, to provide more nutrient dense food for everyone, and to create biodiversity. Listen here to hear them say it better than I can!

I was also happily corrected with Beth's answer and Ben's agreement about what sustainability means to them, and I agree wholeheartedly!

SO much great info shared - listen in to this great conversation here!

08 Aug 202358: Author Liz Shipton On Exploring the World In a Sailboat00:42:39

Liz Shipton's story is a fascinating one; she's a musician and author, and her partner is a sailing instructor, so they bought a boat and are spending 3-5 YEARS sailing the world. So far they're almost 2 years in, and she's published several books out of a 9 book series. Oh, and they have their dog Ayloy, with them, too (sorry I called her Loki - that's the boat's name)!

Liz's books are based loosely on their adventures, and also on climate change; which she'll talk about how that's affecting this adventure... Book one is called Salt, and is available on Amazon/Kindle, found here: https://www.amazon.com/Salt-Spicy-Dystopian-Fantasy-Thalassic-ebook/dp/B0BZN2K9F9/ref=sr_1_1?crid=Z1E06B18BOO1&keywords=liz+shipton+salt&qid=1691151408&sprefix=liz+shipton%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-1

I love stories like Liz's, because her love of the earth and the beauty that surrounds her also motivates to take better care of it. (There is a method I'm working toward). Sailing the world is an education in many ways, and she seems to be taking it all in-

15 Aug 202359: Get Crafty, Not Trashy with Liz McDade00:49:06

I was excited to get to talk with Liz McDade, because I'm a daydream crafter, but don't give myself time to learn to do new things. I had no idea who I was speaking with, though! Liz is no joke on the crafting and sustainability front! Check out this link of speaking events she's done! https://notraceshop.com/media/

Liz is also SO easy to speak with, and I love that she is so real about perfection. She has a shop where you can buy some crafted low-waste items, but she is moving toward teaching these days, which is an extra gift, to learn and keep the skills you've learned!

AND, for any old school TV fans out there, Liz and her brother have a podcast where they watch the TV show Columbo 1 episode at a time and talk about it - it's called Trench Coat, Cigar, Peugeot: Wandering with Columbo!

22 Aug 202360: Less Junk, More Journey, With Michael Andersen00:58:37

Gosh, did I have a great time talking with Michael Andersen about living in his RV! Life is so much more than living in an RV, though, and that's where it got really interesting. I want to leave you with something to gain from listening, but know that Michael has quite the story, and is making the most of this time now. I'm hoping to get to meet him in person when he travels to Maine this fall!

Michael is a website designer, and also created a website for his fellow Nomads, to help them find farmers' markets and good food, and to share great places to travel and see, as well as a way to connect with others. Check out https://travelinggatherings.com/

I was so impressed with how much thought Michael had invested in this adventure, and how much his life has changed, living in a 180 square foot RV in the best ways - listen here for details! (sorry about Rudy the Rooster in the background - he was also loving what he was hearing!)

29 Aug 202361: Smart Recycling and Less Household Waste with Julia Goldstein00:56:10

Julia Goldstein is a real gem of a human, and I'm so glad we connected!

Julia is an author in Washington state and lifelong learner who loves to explain complex subjects, who also is very passionate about sustainability, and she combines the two things to help us to get to the bottom of the mysteries of recycling and other areas - how awesome is that? She's written a few short books to explain recycling and composting, and she has a blog where she offers updated information on things she's currently excited about. If you subscribe to this blog when you check out her website, she offers a really great gift!

In Julia's own words: "I believe that our society needs to change how we make all kinds of products, and individuals can influence businesses through our buying decisions. I can share the changes I have made in the past 5-10 years as I've learned more about packaging, composting, recycling, and similar topics."

Here's Julia's website:  https://juliagoldsteinauthor.com (don't forget to subscribe to her blog! Also check out the amazing book offers in the sustainability realm)

05 Sep 202362: What's Great About Krill Oil? With Nancy Chan00:59:36

Nancy Chan's information that she shared was fascinating! Nancy works with Kori Krill Oil, and shares why Krill Oil is a better supplement than Fish Oil, which I've been taking for years, and how Kori is sustainably harvesting it. That alone was pretty great, but she has so much more to share!
Remember, Nancy is talking with little ole me, and she was so patient while I asked my silly questions. I'm totally sold now, and can't wait to try Krill Oil. The website is here if you'd like to check it out: https://www.korikrilloil.com/

12 Sep 202363: Andrea Canny's Big Sustainable Community Idea01:07:57

I just love Andrea Canny; she had mentioned this idea on another podcast, and I was just dying to tease it out and learn more about it, so here it is! Andrea has a heart of gold and just LOVES her slice of heaven where she's living in Cincinnatti, and with good reason!
Andrea Canny is a fantastic actor, singer, artist and teacher, and that's what I know from spending 3 days with her in March of 2022 at the Podcastaway Retreat, to learn the ins and outs of beginning podcasting with the 10K Dollar Day podcast folks. Andrea was the Podcast Producer at the time, and I felt instantly at home with her, and we bonded over gardening and cooking and family. Now she's a Virtual Assistant while looking for the next acting gig, and managing her family's home property where she grew up.
Andrea's idea makes me so jealous of people who live near her, knowing her incredible plans for her space, but I'll let her tell you - just listen here!

19 Sep 202364 Stephanie Bolduc: A Woman of Environmental Passion!00:54:45

This conversation was so fun for me, as I am enjoying so much getting to know Stephanie Bolduc, whose dad is my cousin. They live in the UK, so I don't get to see them often, and I didn't know Stephanie really at all until this year!

Stephanie is very involved in environmental  issues, and she takes her footprint on the earth very seriously, but in the most gracious way. She has discovered foraging recently and really enjoys finding new uses and value in what we see outside. She is also learning about hot compost (I didn't know about it either, if you were thinking that), and lets us know what she's learning.
Hear all about it in the episode!

Stephanie went to school to work in theater (is it theatre in the UK?), and was creating costumes and theater sets, so she's super crafty and creative.

26 Sep 202365: Sustainable Sensory Toys and More With Jennifer Stalley00:59:13

I loved this conversation with Jennifer Stalley, whose life is  just so interesting! Jennifer lives in California with her spouse and daughter, loves horses and gardening and works in marketing. She came to a stark realization during the Pandemic that sparked  Meemzy Magic toys. She was purchasing sensory toys for her daughter who was very young during the Pandemic, since everyone was home all day, but still had to work - she decided she was able to make them herself, in a more sustainable way, that was every bit as entertaining, if not more so. She tells this story SO much better than I do, so listen in here!

Jennifer is a Kindred Spirit, and just so aware of her responsibilities when it comes to the future, and shares some startling stats that blew my mind.

30 Sep 2023Bonus: Happy International Podcasting Day! Special Episode Joined by Amy Lewis01:19:23

Happy International Podcasting Day, everyone! To honor the incredible community that podcasting is, and the amazing small world that I apparently live in, I recorded a fun episode with my new podcasting friend Amy Lewis, who also lives in my town, and has a super awesome podcast called Pop Culture Retrospective, to honor her older sister, who she lost a few years ago. It's such a fun podcast, and I've wanted to be wanted to be a guest on her podcast since I started listening, so this was a dream! Amy is the best host, and knows SO many facts about pop culture! I remember our first real conversation - I had commented on a few of her episodes previously, but she commented on my episode about Springworks Farm in Lisbon Maine, and said one of her students worked there, and she was happy to learn more about it, and my brain was spinning in so many directions, thinking that this podcaster that I'd been following could be local--
Amy quizzed me on 90s trivia, and 90s pees, I let you down, I'm so sorry. In my defense, I was attempting to appreciate country music in Utah, and working in the 90s, so not really in "the scene" (like I was in High School lol), but Amy didn't tell me I sucked...

Please find Amy and Pop Culture Retrospective where you listen to podcasts - her website is here https://www.popcultureretrospective.com/
She's also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/popcultureretrospective/

Amy is also an amazing photographer! She photographs families, Senior photos, head shots, real estate, Air B&B, you name it! https://www.amylewisphotos.com/

03 Oct 202366: Jenny Boghun Part 2: 23 Frugal Living Tips from the Great Depression You Need to Know01:01:28

Ok, so it's been 6 months coming, since Jenny Boghun was my podcast guest and I said she would come back to go over this list 23 Frugal Living Tips from the Great Depression You Need to Know to Save a Ton of Money that she learned from her parents, and I've realized that I  have lost all concept of time... But here she is - better late than never, right? If you remember, Jenny's previous episode was called Big Living on a Tiny Homestead, and she talked about her tiny house, and her composting toilet, and she lives on Out of My Gourd Farm and grows gourds (duh)...
She's had a super busy summer with her Tiniest Farmstand in Maine, and other homestead projects. She's just back from celebrating her dad's 95th birthday, and these tips are very special to her, since she learned so many from him.
Here's the 23 Frugal Living Tips list: https://www.littlehouseliving.com/23-frugal-tips-from-the-great-depression-you-need-to-know.html

10 Oct 202367: A Conversation with Tony Napolitano, CEO of Maine Community Solar!00:40:33

You guys, this is a big deal - for me, at least. I think that solar energy is such an easy way to harness energy - it's just a big investment... BUT - have you noticed the huge solar farms on the side of the road over the last several years? We're talking about those today!
Tony Napolitano  didn't say "I'm the CEO of Maine Community Solar," when he filled out my guest form, but I'm so glad it was him I got to talk to- he was so great, and has so much passion for his business. Maine Community Solar's job is mainly education, so they're ready for your questions! Their goal, and community solar in general, is to set up folks who don't have the means to have a full solar array, or don't own their home, to be able to enjoy the benefits of solar energy, and to engage more renewable energy in the regions. I'll let him tell you more - just listen in! I had a huge AHA here, and I am on fire right now!

17 Oct 202368: The Mother Thrifting Queen Dida Lang01:01:03

I was all in to hear that Candida Lange was thrifting for a business, and I couldn't wait to hear all about how that worked, but when we were talking, she opened up this WHOLE other beautiful can of worms that changed everything for me. I cannot wait for y'all to hear how much heart Dida has for supporting thrift stores and church/yard sales and why. She has the best comeback story I've heard in a very long time, if ever, and how she is using it to empower others and change the world, has changed me, and I hope it will you as well.
Dida grew up in, and lives in Nebraska; she was a model and actress, and is currently a Style Coach - but not just any Style Coach - she's styling with thrifted clothes - how awesome! She has 3 sons and a wonderful husband, and loves her life.

24 Oct 2023Sustainable Preparedness Talk With Brekke Wagoner00:59:48

Brekke (rhymes with Becky)  Wagoner's message with Sustainable Prepping is a little different than others and I'm so here for it! She's talking about preparing for a disaster or emergency, and just having a little extra to fall back on, to ease your mind in times of stress. In her own words, "With global climate change impacting our weather to be more intense more often, having an emergency preparedness plan isn’t just for doomsday preppers. It’s common sense and will allow you to be confident in the midst of a crisis."
Of course for me, growing up in the Mormon church, preparedness is taught, so I get it, and a lot of older generations may as well, but her aim is the younger generations, to teach that calm in the midst of crisis to the next generation as well. Listen here to learn more - I promise it's fun!

Brekke is really active on the socials, so check her out!

31 Oct 202370: The Serial Sustainable Entrepreneur Dragos Nistor!01:15:47

I've been following Dragos Nistor for a while now on Linkedin, and am always in awe of the beautiful things that he posts of his honey business Honeybee and Co and his lavender business Lavender Gold, and I was so excited to get to actually talk with him and learn more about him! I'm going to let him tell you about him; I don't want to spoil it, but he's very mindful about sustainability in everything that he does. Dragos was born in Romania, and grew up in Italy, and now lives in the UK, but still has very close ties to where he comes from.

Dragos's future was all planned out as a banker, but he took a steep detour and followed his passion and his family roots in beekeeping, and hasn't looked back. His creativity and entrepreneurial nature weren't able to be ignored, and with good reason. He has so many things spinning all the time - he doesn't do still well!

I'm excited for you all to hear this story - listen in here!

07 Nov 202371: A Conversation with Author of The Groundcover Revolution Kathy Jentz00:57:56

Oh my gosh, this was such a fascinating conversation with Kathy Jentz! I learned so much about ground cover, talking about her new book that's out called Groundcover Revolution, and she also loves talking about Urban Gardening(her previous book is about this), since she lives just outside the city in Maryland, and her gorgeous cats - you know I love checking out everyones' cats (check out the YouTube video to see them all - they're huge and stunning!)! She told me about saving lettuce seeds, which is something I've been wondering about for years, and taught me about lettuce seeds in general - GAME CHANGING stuff!!

Kathy is a really busy lady! She's written 2 books, publishes the monthly Washington Gardener magazine (and award winning publication for Mid Atlantic growers!), and has for many years, is President of a number of flower clubs - OH, and she also has a podcast! It's called Garden DC Podcast, and she focuses on a different plant each week! I love so much that she took the time to talk with me - I feel so much smarter just after that little bit of time with her- you can, too - just listen here!

14 Nov 202372: Learning About a New Homesteading Journey with Kathryn Garland00:58:04

Kathryn Garland is a super energetic mom, spouse and newer homesteader who is so real, and in the best way - I love how she lays it out. I also LOVE that she's in British Columbia. Literally on my tiny bucket list of 2 places I need to go someday! She shares a great message of start where you are and expand as you can, which is so simple, yet really works for everything, right? So profound. At least for me.

Kathryn shares their beginning story, which is only about a year and a half, and how insanely quickly they scaled up (she's not an "ease in" type of person), and how that's working. She's also about to release her podcast, called Homespun, which I'm SO excited for! She said November 20, so be on the lookout - I sure will be!

We do touch on some of the harder parts of homesteading (animal death), so I want you to be aware if you're extra sensitive to that. I needed a second to compose myself, but it's part of the journey, and it happens and is important to be prepared for.

This is part of Kathryn's  Instagram Bio: " Home based living (food, education, homesteading, healing) Loving life and simple pleasures"

I love that so much! Simple pleasures - so profound!

Please give Kathryn a follow on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/homespun.kathryn/
and be on the lookout around November 20 for the Homespun Podcast!

21 Nov 2023Replay: A Touch of Creativity to Change Everything with Philomene Cauchois01:01:34

And her beautiful Instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/touchedecreativite/

They are both in French, so you can practice, or just close your eyes and enjoy the peace that her language and posts bring.

05 Dec 202373: Amy's Look Back at the Year, and Upcoming Changes and Episodes00:17:49

This is my 2nd December - wow! This is a toughie, as I'm in a bit of a tender place these days, but most of this year has been pretty amazing, and I have so much to be grateful for - namely the incredible people I've had the honor of speaking with and learning from, and the great folks who keep the social media lively and a fun place to hang out - I love getting to know you all!
The end of the year has taken a turn I hadn't expected, and I'll be making some changes of my own, but I don't intend to change much in terms of the podcast, BUT I do have some thoughts of things I'd like to incorporate, in light of my current life situation, starting with a Menopause Panel, to discuss this taboo subject that leaves us feeling broken and crazy (these are my words - it's possible that everyone doesn't feel this way, but they might) and just not knowing what is happening in their own body. I think this would be helpful for for anyone who interacts with people who are experiencing menopause, so don't think it's aimed at anyone specific. If you'd like to be on this panel, or add anything to be discussed, please be in touch with me. I'm feeling the need to be loud about this, and also bring to light other personal sustainability topics, so send me your ideas.
The year isn't over yet! I've got some super interesting folks these last few weeks, and into the new year - don't miss out!
Thank you for being with me this first full year of podcasting - I'm loving this so much!

12 Dec 202374: Living and Playing in a Sustainable World with Barbara Tibbetts00:46:24
Barbara Tibbetts and I met sort of by chance on Linkedin, when a friend (shout out to Ande Lyons!) tagged me in Barbara's post about the Sustainability event she hosted in Nantucket this summer, and we've been talking regularly ever since - we found that we have a lot in common; we're both trying to spread the word about sustainability and that we should all be making more of an effort...
Here is a quote from her podcast guest form: "We can all make choices to live sustainably with the correct knowledge and make a difference for our health and the health and well being of our planet." Does that sound like someone that I'd want to hang out with, or what?

Barbara has started developing a website - a resource, to search different ways of being sustainable - it's still in the works, and possibly always will be, but check out Living and Playing in a Sustainable world here: https://www.lapsnow.com/

Barbara is currently focusing a lot of her energy learning about PFAS, and trying to repair some of the damage done during our non-stick everything phase.
She's so passionate, and is doing some excellent work; listen for more in this episode!

02 Jan 202477: FarmDrop CEO Hannah Semler Talks about Farming, Food and Community01:07:11

I am so thrilled to share this conversation with you guys - I have wanted to have Hannah Semler on the podcast since the beginning! I'm a big fan of FarmDrop - I'm both a customer and a vendor, and I love having the ability to try items from several different local farmers that are bringing their product practically to me! Hannah will say it better, so I'll leave her to it.

Hannah also hosted a podcast called What is American Food, because she is so passionate about the origins - AND she was working with a food  waste rescue group as well. She also started a FarmDrop delivery program for Seniors who are homebound, so they, too can be nourished by our skilled farmers.
Listen to the episode for more about all of this, and why Farmdrop is so important to her!

Hannah and her trusty sidekick Barley travel the state of Maine together,  making sure things are organized and operating smoothly when customers come to pick up their goods. There are several dropoff/pickup Hubs throughout the state, and trying to get the vendors' products spread to other hubs than the one closest to them can't be easy!
You're going to love Hannah - I can't imagine not loving her passion for what she does!
Call to Action: I'd love to share this episode wide, and see if we can get some interest in other areas of the country for FarmDrop! Do you know of an area lacking a farmers market, or are you interested in being a FarmDrop vendor? The reach is WIDE with these products!

FarmDrop website is here - check out all the options available at different locations, and see how cool it would be to start your own or be part of one! Reach out to Hannah with inquiries about FarmDrop! https://farmdrop.us/

Farmdrop is on Instagram and Facebook as @farmdropus

19 Dec 202375: Your Story, Your Purpose, With Brenda Simmons00:56:51

I was recently a guest on Brenda Simmons'  podcast Be You: Your Story Your Purpose, and getting to know Brenda was such a nice time, and we really bonded over so many things, so we decided to continue the conversation over here. Brenda has so many things to talk about, like growing up close to her grandparents and learning from them, and the internships she did at school, how she's feeding her own family... we learned that we were both in Utah at the same time (I was only there for a year)!

Brenda's podcast is fairly new, and she's doing so well with it - 2 episodes weekly! She has really great topics to encourage women/people to find their own story to share to help others. Here's the link to it: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thebeyoupodcast

I just loved this and had to keep it - from the guest form:
Is there a specific message you'd like listeners to come away with?
"If you don't have a relationship with earth, you won't want to take care of it. It starts with connection."

26 Dec 202376: Jen Joray's Move from City to Eastern River Farm01:13:38

I know I keep saying that this episode is SO good, but I really feel like it is - and this conversation is no different - I had such a great time talking to Jen Joray of Eastern River Farm - I loved hearing their process of going from city dwellers to farmers, because I feel like it's a dream of many - at least mine, but I have a feeling that others are feeling it, too. So this can be somewhat of a 'blueprint' of a path - or an example of how it can be done - and successfully! They are teaching their daughters all the aspects of the farm, and have them assist with as much as possible. The farm business is mainly wedding flowers - did you see that coming? You may want to consider after listening to Jen talk about them!

Jen and her husband were doing their best to provide for their 2 daughters as teachers in Massachusetts when her Chemist husband one day came home and said " I think I need to be a farmer." And so they made that happen. But the journey wasn't instant, which is helpful - she documents it well, for anyone wanting to follow their lead...

Jen is an educator through and through, and has done SO much research into soil amendments and animal husbandry and planting and what plants work well, and ALL the farmy subjects, and, educator that she is, would absolutely LOVE to have to opportunity to share the info and experience that she's gained - seriously! Reach out to me, or reach out to her with any questions, and if she doesn't know the answer, she'll want to learn, and will find the answer for you!

16 Jan 202478: Sustainable Chocolate with Mara Mennicken, The GOOD Chocolatier (part 1)01:00:46

*This conversation was long, but I couldn't bare to take anything out, so I split it into 2 weeks, so make sure to listen next week for the wrap up!*

Mara Mennicken and I met on a podcasting Facebook page and it took me a fraction of a second reading about her sustainable chocolate business to know I had to have her on the podcast to tell me all about it!

Mara is from Germany, but came to British Columbia as part of a school exchange program, and knew she wanted to be there. She's done very well for herself, it seems!

Her thoughts on sustainability are a little more broad than some people's, and I'm totally here for it. Her company is sustainable, but more than just physical, like packaging and product, but social sustainability is very important to her, and she'll explain how and why. And speaking of important, I ask the question below to everyone in my guest form, and I just loved her answer:

Is there a specific message you'd like listeners to come away with?

"Put your dollar where your heart is! Every dollar spent is a mini investment in the people and their mission who are behind the product or service- Buying local, organic, or from social enterprises makes an impact!"
And to that, I'll just say  AMEN!

09 Jan 202479: Talking with Tessa Terry of Alchemy RV Renovations!00:46:32

I approached Tessa Terry on Facebook when I saw her post about her RV renovation business Alchemy RV Renovations because I was so intrigued - then I followed her on Instagram - oh my gosh, if you're on Instagram, you need to follow her! These RVs are 100% renovated and made brand new on the inside, and she shines them up on the outside, too! They go from basic , and possibly used and run down, to roomy and luxurious when Tessa is done with them!

Tessa has been in this business for about 2 years - TWO YEARS. She is booked up this year already! She has had several requests to renovate RVs in Australia! She just has a real gift for small space design that is unmatched. Wait til you hear her tell her story - if you're listening only, I bet you can imagine my face in your head when she talks about her HS graduation...

Tessa is married, is a mom of 2, and grew up in a family that bought 'fixer-upper'  houses, and her parents have had a lampshade business for about 30 years, so she totally gets the value of working with your hands. A quote from her website: "When I was little, I used to say “If men could go to the moon, this stuff on earth is cake” - Nothing is impossible, sometimes it just needs a new floor plan."
She has designed her own life, and she's giving RVs and other rigs a new life, which is so cool.

Here's Tessa's instagram to follow: https://www.instagram.com/alchemyrvrenovations/

23 Jan 202479: Sustainable Chocolate with Mara Mennicken, The GOOD Chocolatier (Part 2)00:55:30

Welcome back to Part 2 of Mara Mennicken's conversation- we get a little bit deep, and it is fun to see so much passion from Mara - and it's much more than chocolate alone. Mara talks about social sustainability, and if you're trying to imagine what that's like in your head, just listen here - it's at the beginning of this segment, and it's SO good.

I ask the question below to everyone in my guest form, and I just loved her answer:

30 Jan 202480: Sonya Parenti, AKA Miss Love Terra, Talking About Fast Fashion!01:12:53

Shoot, This moment has been a long time coming for me, and I couldn't be more happy to share this with you all - I'm such a big fan of Sonya Parenti - Miss Love Terra on Instagram, and her hard work to educate people and ask for mindfulness when purchasing cheap clothing, to be wary of its journey and consequences. I think I pride myself in being somewhat of a 'system bucker,' and fashion in general is not my thing (if you see me in pics I'm usually wearing a flannel shirt and jeans), so I enjoy this poking at the fashion worlf maybe a little more than I should...

These are Sonya's own words from my guest form:
"I’m full of enthusiasm about joining this podcast because, as an experienced professional in the fashion industry, I have a deep knowledge about the industry's complexities and challenges. I believe that transforming the fashion business is crucial in our collective efforts to address global warming. This podcast, hosted by Amy, serves as a powerful platform to have meaningful conversations and inspire change in ourselves and others. By joining forces, we can boost our impact, educating and motivating listeners to make choices that favour ethical and sustainable fashion. My goal is to use this opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable future, sharing insights and strategies that can guide us towards a greener, more responsible fashion industry."

And I just LOVED this (my fave question on the guest form)
"The message I want listeners to take away is an understanding of the impact of collective actions on the environment. The quote 'RELAX IT’S JUST ONE CHEAP T-SHIRT', SAID 8 BILLION PEOPLE, highlights that while individual choices may seem small, when multiplied across billions of people, they have a huge impact on society and the environment. It's a call to be more conscious of our buying decisions, understanding that our demand for cheap, fast fashion contributes to unsustainable practices, environmental degradation, and poor labor conditions. The key takeaway for listeners is that people have the power to change big issues with our small daily choices."
Really, Sonya doesn't need me to add  anything to this at all.  Please listen for the full  conversation!

Here is Sonya's website to learn more about her work:

06 Feb 202481: Startup Farm Stories with Ben Whatley Part 101:23:02

Ok, I guess I lied about whittling down this episode; it IS long - in my defense, I tried, but I couldn't bear to take anything out! So this is another 2 part-er...

I met Ben Whatley officially in 2020, just as the Covid Pandemic was ramping up, and, as a farmer, Ben was reserving time at the commercial kitchen I used for my jam business, and was asked to help rent out, so we talked - and he was SO cool. So much to share, and so much knowledge and passion for caring for the earth he was responsible for. I felt that instantly, and he was one of my first thoughts when starting this podcast, because he is so open about a lot of things.

Let me tell you I learned a LOT in this conversation! I had no idea how much Ben would share, and how cool of a story he had! Languages, car breaking down, crop failure, but also tons of great wins - he's had some of his employees for years! They have a great attitude toward crap weather. He has 2 cutie baby kids (I found out about # 2 just before recording - he's 11 weeks old!), and a beautiful life partner, and supportive family.

So many things inspire me about Ben and his farming practices - I'll let him tell them over these 2 episodes, but one of my favorite things if their dedication to use less plastic  - and that they have Anna, who loves trying out recipes with the produce and sharing (we'll talk about it in the 2nd episode), but also how the farmers in Maine all share info and help each other out with new ideas and tips to get past hurdles - for instance, this past summer's deluge of rain...

So many topics discussed - don't miss out!

*Grounded in Maine is thrilled to be partnering with Connor Tyson to support listeners with financial coaching. Connect with Sponsor Coach Connor Tyson of Progress Solutions LLC here: https://bit.ly/48eM9Mc

When I say this guest is special, you may be thinking that I keep saying it (it's true, and I feel so lucky to get to talk to all of these incredible  people!), but Karee Upendo is truly an inspiration. This episode is a little on the shorter side, but I hope that you'll follow her on Instagram or TikTok where she's active, to get more from her, but I fully intend to do more with Karee in the future, because she is a powerful force and a great role model!

I don't want to spoil her story, but Karee did not have a typical childhood, but you know, that's why she has so much heart for what she's doing. She was a designer, she was a teacher, and now she's a farmer - an autistic black farmer, paving the way for the next generation, and showing them all that's possible if you believe in yourself.

Listen here to learn more, and be hooked on Karee like me!

I usually give the website address, but the LinkTree covers that and so much more! Check out all the incredible things the Upendos have done (award winning film, published books, their AirB&B and their website)!  https://linktr.ee/upendoEstates

*Grounded in Maine is thrilled to be partnering with Connor Tyson to support listeners with financial coaching. Connect with Sponsor Coach Connor Tyson of Progress Solutions LLC here: https://bit.ly/48eM9Mc

Hayley Knight and I started our "mutual admiration society" on Instagram and decided to pair up and talk about the cool things that she's up to, since I talk all the time, and her life seems way more exciting than mine...

Hayley and her spouse Marcus have a PR firm called Be Yellow and are traveling the world; they are 2 and 1/2 years in right now. This all started from a severe career burnout, and Hayley was ordered by a Dr to get away. We learn a lot about burnout and the danger of letting it get too far, how Hayley is keeping it at bay, and what lights her up these days. As well as learning about where they've traveled...

Hayley's firm works with sustainable businesses, and that's a non-negotiable for them; it's that important to only support people who are working to better the earth's situation. It must be so satisfying to be able to exercise that kind of power!

When asked what message Hayley wanted to leave the listeners with, it was this: "Do what you can, with what you have."  She also said "We have to Progress to make progress..." which I loved.

Hear all about Haley here!

I learn so much from Lauren Landers, AKA The Zero Waste Homestead on Instagram, so I thought it would be fun to record some stuff for the rest of us to get to hear. Lauren is something of a Sustainability Educator in Northern Maine (north of me, at least), which I didn't realize until we were talking, but who better to chat with about sustainability, right? Worked out perfectly!

Lauren moved to Ellsworth, Maine just a couple of years ago, and is making a name for herself by speaking at events and gardening classes, etc in her area. This is her first podcast appearance, though - first of many, I imagine!

The two of us geeked out a little about worms, and talked about shampoo bars and the cleaners and soaps she makes- listen to the whole conversation here-

Wade Brill and I met in a podcasting workshop with One Stone Creative once or twice about a year ago, and have been supporting each other on Instagram since - Wade had a fun idea to interview me to talk about sustainable practices, and we agreed  then to do a podcast trade - AND we did them back to back, like real podcasters! It was so great to get to know Wade better, and to hear some of her story and what drives her, and her work and podcast fit so well into my pivot this year to learn more personal sustainability tips with her podcast Centered in the City where she talks about mindfulness and meditations and other health-minded practices to calm the nervous system in this busy world.

Wade lives in Seattle, WA, but grew up in New York City, and had a farm in her family's close connections for many years, so she has a strong connection to farm life - and she has great stories to share about it.

She talked about her passion for travel, and her conflict of trying to be more sustainable, but also the pull to travel, and I know there are others who must share those feelings. And she also brought back a European habit from a recent trip that she talks about - hear more here!

I'm obsessed with Nicla Marinelli's business, The Runaway Italian, and Nicla's accent, her knowledge of the area, and the thought of "Secret Italy!"

Nicla grew up in Rome, but moved to the UK, and eventually back to Italy, but to the south, this time. She worked in travel for many years, and has an extensive travel blog, but left the Tour Guide gig to start the kind of travel she would feel proud to be a part of; being more mindful of what is used, and also to cater to people who prefer a different kind of tour - off the beaten path, and hands on experiences, to remember with all your senses. It sounds so fabulous to me!

Nicla goes into depth describing her business in this episode - listen in to hear all about it! You can also check out her website for more details and package information:

I stole this from Amy Dolan's Wider Tables website: "Amy Dolan is the host of The Feeding People Podcast, Founder of Sunday Supper Church, Strategic Consultant for the Chicagoland Good Food in Healthcare Initiative, and a Board Member for Pathways to Global Literacy.
Amy believes that when people gather around tables to listen, understand, learn and connect—solutions emerge and beauty unfolds."

Since I met Amy I have been obsessed with her podcast, and her Instagram feed. She has such a beautiful, curious soul and is so kind. Amy is a former Pastor who took her job very seriously, and has continued caring for her community in her Wider Tables business and Sunday Supper Church. Learn more by listening here!

26 Mar 202487: March Madness in Maine - Check In with Amy Fagan00:19:26

Grounded in Maine is thrilled to be partnering with Connor Tyson to support listeners with financial coaching. This is such a great offer; to encourage self confidence and self sufficiency in finances! Connect with  Coach Connor Tyson of Progress Solutions LLC here: https://bit.ly/48eM9Mc

I have so many things spinning inside my head at any given time, so I did some thinking out loud for this week's episode.

One thing is that I'm hoping this podcast is providing value to you. Could you please get in touch and let me know what you love or don't love? If you could leave a rating or review somewhere, that would be so helpful, if other people are looking for a great podcast about sustainability-

The Menopause Panel Project is ON! I'm looking for people - women and men - to be part of the panel, and questions that you might have around menopause! Send me messages of ideas, or if you're interested in being part of this. I'm so excited to hear how different- or similar peoples' experiences are!

And lastly, I'll be moving soon, and am curious what your sustainable priorities would be in a new (to you) home? I'll plan to put solar panels on if they're not already, and heat pumps; I've got a composter, and will definitely be having a garden. What else should I be considering?? I recently learned about a company called Solar Pro, and met with them - they said you can LEASE solar panels, and have them installed at no cost; you just pay the monthly charges for a number of years. That's such a cool offer, to not have the huge investment to start out, then you can bank up your savings and pay them off--  I love that!

I also mentioned some really awesome upcoming episodes, including one with Connor Tyson (Coach Connor, from the sponsor ads), and his super great service, offering understanding of finances as a form of personal sustainability!
Thank you so much for listening! Please give feedback on any or all of these points- I love getting to know your sustainable goals and what you're up to in general!

02 Apr 202488: Sustainable Activism with Kadin McElwain00:33:51

Grounded in Maine is thrilled to be partnering with Connor Tyson to support listeners with financial coaching. Connect with Coach Connor Tyson of Progress Solutions LLC here: https://bit.ly/48eM9Mc

Kadin stepped in after I had a rough week technology-wise, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to see what he's up to!

Kadin is a Sophomore at Kent State University, studying Public Relations, and is hoping to represent musicians. Last summer he worked on a farm and learned a lot about the difference in eating locally grown food vs what is often found in grocery stores, and is looking forward to working there again this summer, because working with the earth is good for you.

Kadin is very passionate about being an activist, and standing up for what you believe in, and talks about how he practices sustainability in his activism for Autism and Climate Change, etc.

You can find Kadin on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083352067155
And his writing is available here: https://www.thesportscol.com/author/kadin-mcelwain/

09 Apr 202489: Rite of Passage Guide Nicholas Wasierski01:03:16

Grounded in Maine is thrilled to be partnering with Connor Tyson to support listeners with financial coaching. Connect with Coach Connor Tyson of Progress Solutions LLC here: https://bit.ly/48eM9Mc

Nicholas Wasierski reached out when I sent out an SOS after my "tech" issues (cat) and had to schedule re-dos for 3 conversations, and it took me a bit to understand what his practices are - in my defense, there are so many... But when he said he was a Rite of Passage Guide, I expected it to be more of a wilderness guide - boy was I wrong, and boy am I fascinated with this now! I was so close to asking for more context (a bit of a sample session), but I thought it might be too. long for you all to listen to in one sitting. But I plan to, and you can, once you get a taste here, too!

Nicholas is also an Herbalist, and quotes Hippocrates saying "Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food."

The 2 of these practices go together well, and serve his message that I added below - this is the message he hopes you'll leave this episode with more knowledge and curiosity of:
Humans' connection to the natural world.
Sustainability with how we manage our energy.

16 Apr 202490: Meal Planning and More with Megan Gaul01:03:03

Grounded in Maine is thrilled to be partnering with Connor Tyson to support listeners with financial coaching. Connect with Coach Connor Tyson of Progress Solutions LLC here: https://bit.ly/48eM9Mc

Megan Gaul is the Owner of Partake Meal Planning and Wellness, and also is a weight loss coach with heart, because she doesn't say food are off limits; she knows it works, because she lost over 100 lbs 5 years ago. We talk about how her plan works, and tools she puts in place to ensure success. She talked about taking the next right action, instead of punishing ourselves for messing up.

Megan is also passionate about food waste, and uses meal planning to help be mindful of that. She says " By changing a few habits we can bring more healthy habits, and reduce our footprint on the world." She hosts a weekly meal planning session on Instagram, to show you how it works, and also offers a free meal planning guide.

We also talk about food journaling, something that I've struggled with in the past, and how to make it easier - listen here to learn all about it!
