12 Feb 2025Shampoo (1975) ft. Sara Shea01:29:00

Dana and Tom welcome back guest, Sara Shea (Host and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IG) to discuss Shampoo (1975) for its 50th Anniversary: directed by Hal Ashby, written by Warren Beatty and Robert Towne, music by Paul Simon, starring Warren Beatty, Goldie Hawn, Julie Christine, Lee Grant, Carrie Fischer, and Jack Warden.

Plot Summary: Shampoo is a sharp, bittersweet satire wrapped in the glitzy excess of late-'60s Beverly Hills. The film follows George Roundy (Beatty), a womanizing hairdresser whose ambition is undercut by his inability to resist the charms of his wealthy clientele. On the eve of the 1968 presidential election, George juggles a tangled web of lovers—including his current girlfriend (Goldie Hawn), his wealthy benefactor’s wife (Lee Grant), and his ex (Julie Christie)—all while trying to secure financial backing for his own salon.

Shampoo disguises its sharp political and social critique beneath a surface of sexual farce, letting the characters’ selfishness mirror the broader moral drift of the era. The film’s humor is sly but never mean-spirited, and its direction, full of casual elegance, ensures that even the most ridiculous moments feel authentic. By the film’s melancholic finale, Shampoo has revealed itself as more than just a sex comedy—it’s a lament for lost opportunities, both personal and political.

04 Aug 2023MCU Crossover Series: Thor (2011) Part 200:39:55

In this crossover podcast series, each month, Adam Hitchcock (The Streaming Circuit podcast) and Tom discuss each movie in chronological order for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga. This time, Adam and Tom discuss Thor (2011): directed by Kenneth Branagh, written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, and Don Payne, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Rene Russo.

To find Part 1, subscribe to The Streaming Circuit feed wherever you get your podcasts.

Plot Summary: In the realm of Asgard, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the impulsive and arrogant son of King Odin (Anthony Hopkins), is next in line for the throne. However, his reckless actions and thirst for battle lead to a confrontation with the Frost Giants, ancient enemies of Asgard. Determined to teach Thor a lesson in humility, Odin strips him of his divine powers and casts him down to Earth.

Crash-landing in New Mexico, Thor finds himself far away from his homeland and stripped of his mighty hammer, Mjolnir. Confused and out of his element, he encounters a team of astrophysicists led by Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and her mentor Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård). As they attempt to unravel the mystery behind Thor's arrival, they come to realize that they are not alone in their quest.

Back in Asgard, Thor's banishment sparks a power struggle within the kingdom. Thor's cunning brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) seizes the opportunity to ascend to the throne, while Odin falls into a deep slumber. As the balance between realms becomes increasingly unstable, Thor must prove himself worthy and regain his powers to stop Loki's malevolent plans from bringing ruin to both Asgard and Earth.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, "Thor" strikes a perfect balance between grand spectacle and intimate character moments. Branagh's Shakespearean background is evident in the film's rich storytelling and complex relationships. The performances by the ensemble cast are top-notch, with Hemsworth embodying the essence of Thor's larger-than-life personality, and Hiddleston delivering a nuanced portrayal of Loki's internal conflicts. "Thor" is not just another superhero film; it is a mythological odyssey that explores themes of redemption, family, and sacrifice. It lays the foundation for future installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe while also standing tall as a compelling standalone adventure. By blending Norse mythology with contemporary storytelling, "Thor" captures the imagination and sets the stage for an epic saga that will resonate with audiences for years to come.

28 Jun 2023The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) ft. Adam Hitchcock01:36:43

Dana and Tom welcome back returning guest, Adam Hitchcock (The Streaming Circuit podcast) to discuss the financial thriller, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013): directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Terrence Winter, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, and Matthew McConaughey.

Plot Summary: In Martin Scorsese's riveting and audacious exploration of greed and excess, "The Wolf of Wall Street" takes us on a wild ride through the morally bankrupt world of high finance. Based on the real-life memoir of Jordan Belfort, Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a tour de force performance as the charismatic and morally dubious stockbroker who rises from obscurity to become a titan of Wall Street.

Belfort's journey begins in the late 1980s, guided by his mentor, the flamboyant and unscrupulous Mark Hanna (portrayed with infectious energy by Matthew McConaughey), Belfort quickly learns the ropes of the financial industry. With the allure of wealth and power, he opens his own firm and embarks on a path strewn with unbridled excess, fueled by an insatiable hunger for more. As Belfort's empire expands, so does the indulgence and debauchery that define his life. Lavish parties, obscene displays of wealth, and a plethora of vices become the norm for him and his loyal followers. Together, they revel in a world where money knows no bounds and morality takes a backseat. Yet, as Belfort's empire reaches unprecedented heights, the authorities start to take notice.

"The Wolf of Wall Street" paints a mesmerizing and unflinching portrait of excess and its consequences. At its core, "The Wolf of Wall Street" is a scathing critique of a system that rewards unscrupulous behavior and places unbridled ambition above all else.

19 Jun 2024Chinatown (1974) ft. Scott Cole02:01:10

Dana and Tom welcome new guest, Scott Cole (Twitter-X/IG (@colecommascott) movie commentator, and occassional writer/contributor for The Movie Friends podcast.com (@moviefriendspodcast)), to the show to discuss the neo-noir classic, Chinatown (1974): directed by Roman Polanski, written by Robert Towne, starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston.

Plot Summary: Chinatown (1974), directed by Roman Polanski, is a masterful blend of noir and tragedy that stands as one of the great achievements in American cinema. The film stars Jack Nicholson as Jake Gittes, a private detective whose specialty is uncovering marital infidelities. When he is hired by a woman claiming to be Evelyn Mulwray (Diane Ladd) to investigate her husband’s suspected affair, Gittes is drawn into a labyrinth of deceit, corruption, and murder. Set against the backdrop of 1930s Los Angeles, the plot thickens as Gittes discovers the true Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) and realizes he has been duped. The deeper he digs, the more he uncovers a sinister conspiracy involving water rights and the powerful land magnate Noah Cross (John Huston).

Chinatown is not just a detective story; it is a commentary on the corruption and decay that lie beneath the surface of society, a theme that remains relevant to this day. In the end, as the iconic final line suggests, "Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown," the film reminds us that some mysteries are better left unsolved, and some wounds never heal.

22 Jan 2025M*A*S*H (1970) ft. Adam Vanderwerff01:16:46

Dana and Tom with returning guest, Adam Vanderwerff, discuss M*A*S*H (1970): directed by Robert Altman, written by Ring Lardner, Jr., music by Johnny Mandel, starring Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt, and Robert Duvall.

Plot Summary: M*A*S*H is a sharp, irreverent satire that reimagines the war film as a chaotic and darkly comedic theater of absurdity. Set in a mobile army surgical hospital during the Korean War, the film follows the misadventures of surgeons Hawkeye Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and Trapper John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), whose antics clash with the rigid military hierarchy.

The film's freewheeling ensemble style captures the camaraderie and anarchy of a unit forced to find humor amidst the horrors of war. With its anti-authoritarian ethos and whip-smart dialogue, the film critiques the machinery of war and conformity without sermonizing. The overlapping conversations, naturalistic performances, and subversive tone make M*A*S*H both a product of its era and a timeless commentary on the absurdities of human conflict.

18 Oct 2023Touch of Evil (1958)01:16:31

Dana and Tom discuss the crime noir thriller, Touch of Evil (1958): written and directed by Orson Welles, music by Henry Mancini, starring Charleton Heston, Orson Welles, Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, and Zsa Zsa Gabor.

Plot Summary: In "Touch of Evil," director Orson Welles crafts a gripping, noir-infused masterpiece that immerses the audience in a world of corruption, betrayal, and moral ambiguity. Set in a seedy border town on the U.S.-Mexico border, a car bomb explosion on the American side of the border sets off a chain of events that exposes the underbelly of law enforcement and political power.

At the center of the narrative is the enigmatic and morally compromised police captain Hank Quinlan, played with remarkable depth by Orson Welles himself. Quinlan is a brilliant detective known for his unorthodox methods, but his obsession with bringing criminals to justice has led him down a dark path of manipulation and deceit. He's a character who personifies the blurred lines between good and evil, justice and corruption. Opposing Quinlan is the charismatic and determined Mexican narcotics officer, Mike Vargas, portrayed by the charismatic Charlton Heston. Vargas is determined to solve the bombing case, and is willing to confront the pervasive corruption that infects both sides of the border. As the investigation unfolds, "Touch of Evil" delves into themes of racial tension, prejudice, and the abuse of power, all set against a backdrop of gritty urban decay. The film's supporting cast, including Janet Leigh as Vargas's wife, Susan, and Marlene Dietrich as a mysterious fortune-telling gypsy, adds depth to the story and further complicates the moral landscape.

"Touch of Evil" is a cinematic tour de force that continues to be celebrated for its complexity, social commentary, and innovative filmmaking techniques. It's a film that leaves a lasting impression by challenging viewers to question their own notions of justice and morality in a world where darkness lurks just beneath the surface. Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil" is a timeless classic that remains a must-see for cinephiles and lovers of thought-provoking cinema.

17 Jul 2024Easy Rider (1969) ft. Jesse Sertle01:17:51

Dana and Tom with guest Jesse Sertle (fellow group member of CineMadison, previously on Rounders, @jsertle on IG) discuss the dawn of New Hollywood with Easy Rider (1969): written and directed by Dennis Hopper with Peter Fonda and Terry Southern, starring Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, and Jack Nicholson.

Plot Summary: In the open road odyssey "Easy Rider," director Dennis Hopper and co-star Peter Fonda embody the restless spirit of the 1960s counterculture. The film, a rambling narrative of freedom and disillusionment, follows two bikers, Wyatt (Fonda) and Billy (Hopper), as they traverse the American Southwest in search of authenticity and liberation. The duo's journey, funded by a drug deal, becomes a kaleidoscopic exploration of the American landscape, both physical and cultural.

The film captures a nation in transition with its stunning cinematography showcasing the vastness of America while contrasting it with the intimacy of its small towns and eccentric characters. Along the way, they encounter an assortment of characters, from an idealistic lawyer (Jack Nicholson) to a communal farm, representing the era’s ideological clashes.

"Easy Rider" is a raw, poignant, and at times, tragic reflection on the price of freedom and the inevitable collision between personal liberty and societal norms. The film’s haunting ending, set against the backdrop of a sun setting over the American landscape, leaves viewers with a sense of loss and contemplation. Hopper’s direction, combined with Fonda’s cool demeanor and Nicholson’s electrifying performance, creates a cinematic experience that is as timeless as it is of its time.

16 Feb 2025Superbad (2007) ft. Andrew Buss - Special Livestream Event02:30:45

Dana and Tom with special guest, author Andrew Buss (@andrewlbuss on Twitter, IG) discuss Superbad (2007) for Andrew's new book coming out on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025 - I Am McLovin: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation (available with all major book purchasers): directed by Greg Mottola, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, music by Lyle Workman, starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, and Seth Rogen.

Plot Summary: So there's this flick called 'Superbad', right? Imagine two high school seniors, Seth and Evan. They’re like best buds, and of course, they're total outcasts. Anyway, they're on this mission to have the most epic night ever before they head off to college. The ultimate goal? Get booze and get the girls of their dreams.

But let me tell you, everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Picture a wild odyssey that involves a fake ID, cops who are a bit too eager to party, and one awkward encounter after another. It’s hilarious, it’s awkward, and it’s got that coming-of-age vibe that makes it an absolute riot. Oh, and it’s also got a bit of heart—because, you know, it’s not just about the party. It’s about friendship, growing up, and all that other mushy stuff.

07 Jun 2023Vertigo (1958)01:01:28

Dana and Tom discuss the mystery thriller, Vertigo (1958): directed by Alfred Hitchcock, screenplay by Alec Coppel and Samuel Taylor, starring James Stewart and Kim Novak.

Plot Summary: In Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo," the maestro of suspense takes us on a dizzying journey into the recesses of the human mind. James Stewart stars as Scottie Ferguson, a former detective burdened by his fear of heights, a phobia that gradually becomes a metaphor for the vertiginous nature of desire itself.

When Scottie is enlisted by an old acquaintance, Gavin Elster, to investigate his wife's peculiar behavior, the stage is set for a tale of passion and deception. Kim Novak, a vision of ethereal beauty, portrays Madeleine, the object of Scottie's infatuation. As Scottie falls deeper into a labyrinth of mystery and obsession, Hitchcock deftly unravels the thin thread connecting reality and fantasy.

As Scottie becomes entangled in a torrid affair, the film takes a dark and unexpected turn. The boundaries between truth and illusion blur, leaving both the protagonist and the audience teetering on the edge of a precipice. In a climactic twist that leaves us reeling, Hitchcock shatters our expectations and forces us to confront the fragility of our own perceptions.

"Vertigo" is a tour de force of psychological cinema, a mesmerizing exploration of the dark recesses of the human psyche. With its haunting imagery and an intricate web of deceit, the film lingers in our consciousness, leaving us questioning the nature of reality and the depths of our own desires.

04 Dec 2024Roman Holiday (1953) Revisit ft. Christine Duncan and Klarissa01:33:15

Dana and Tom with Christine Duncan and Klarissa (I've Seen That) revisit Roman Holiday (1953): directed by William Wyler, written by Dalton Trumbo, Ian McClellan Hunter, and John Dighton, score by Georges Auric and Victor Young, starring Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, and Eddie Albert.

Plot Summary: In the pantheon of classic cinematic escapades, "Roman Holiday" stands as a luminous testament to the transformative power of love and the allure of adventure. Picture this: a weary princess, suffocated by the pomp and circumstance of royal life, seeks solace in the vibrant heart of Rome. Audrey Hepburn, in her iconic role as Princess Ann, embodies youthful exuberance and longing. Her quest for normalcy leads her into the unsuspecting arms of Gregory Peck’s Joe Bradley, a hardened journalist looking for his next big scoop.

This isn’t just a love story—it's a celebration of serendipity. The narrative waltzes through the cobblestone streets of Rome, capturing the city’s soul through enchanting vignettes: a Vespa ride, a mouthwatering gelato, and a dance by the Tiber. The chemistry between Hepburn and Peck is palpable with their performances grounding the whimsical tale in emotional truth.

But "Roman Holiday" is more than escapist fantasy; it's a poignant commentary on the dichotomy between duty and desire, a meditation on the fleeting nature of freedom. As Ann returns to her royal obligations, we’re left with a bittersweet reminder of the price of responsibility. In an era where reality often feels burdensome, this film invites us to lose ourselves in its magic, if only for a moment.

Bong expertly balances tension and satire, leading to an explosive, tragic climax that reveals the fragile illusions of both the rich and the poor. 21 Feb 2024Office Space (1999) ft. Adam Vanderwerff01:15:07

Dana and Tom with new guest, Adam Vanderwerff, discuss the irreverent workplace satire, Office Space (1999): written and directed by Mike Judge, music by John Frizzell, starring Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, Gary Cole, and Stephen Root.

Plot Summary: In the suburban labyrinth of cubicles and copy machines, "Office Space" emerges as a wry and incisive commentary on the soul-sucking ennui of corporate America. Director Mike Judge masterfully crafts a tale that delves into the mundane yet oddly compelling lives of software company employees who find themselves trapped in a cycle of monotony and middle-management absurdity.

At its core, "Office Space" is a comedic exploration of existential dread, centering on the disillusioned Peter Gibbons (played with deadpan brilliance by Ron Livingston), who undergoes a profound existential crisis triggered by a botched hypnotherapy session. Liberated from the shackles of ambition, Peter embarks on a subversive journey of workplace rebellion alongside his equally disenchanted comrades, Michael Bolton (David Herman) and Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu).

Judge navigates the murky waters of office politics with razor-sharp wit, skewering corporate culture and its absurdities with precision and hilarity. From the mind-numbing TPS reports to the insidious machinations of upper management, every facet of office life becomes fair game for Judge's biting satire.

Plot Summary: Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, is a dark, visceral exploration of disillusionment and rebellion in a consumer-driven society. Edward Norton stars as an unnamed narrator, a corporate drone who feels trapped in the relentless cycle of modern capitalism. Still, it’s only when he meets the charismatic anarchist Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) that he feels truly alive.

Tyler and the narrator start a "Fight Club," an underground fight society where men brawl to escape the numbness of their lives. What begins as cathartic release soon spirals into chaos as Tyler’s influence over the narrator grows, drawing him into an increasingly violent, nihilistic philosophy.

02 Jun 2023MCU Crossover Series: The Incredible Hulk (2008) Part 200:47:37

In this crossover podcast series, each month, Adam Hitchcock (The Streaming Circuit podcast) and Tom discuss each movie in chronological order for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga starting this time with The Incredible Hulk (2008): directed by Louis Letterier, screenplay by Zak Penn, starring Edward Norton, William Hurt, Tim Roth, and Liv Tyler.

To find Part 1, subscribe to The Streaming Circuit feed wherever you get your podcasts.

Plot Summary: In "The Incredible Hulk", director Louis Leterrier, known for his sleek action sequences, takes audiences on a turbulent journey through the complex psyche of Dr. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) in a thought-provoking exploration of anger, isolation, and the quest for self-acceptance.

The film opens with Dr. Bruce Banner living in the remote corners of South America, seeking solace and anonymity as he tries to control his monstrous alter ego. Haunted by guilt over the destruction caused by his uncontrollable rage, Banner seeks a cure that will rid him of the Hulk once and for all. Banner's quest intersects with the shadowy operations of a covert military organization, led by the enigmatic General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (William Hurt). Ross, obsessed with capturing Banner and harnessing the Hulk's power as a weapon, deploys a special task force headed by the ruthless Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth). As Banner eludes capture and struggles with his inner demons, he encounters Dr. Betty Ross (Liv Tyler), his former lover and General Ross's daughter. Their reunion reignites the dormant emotions between them, further complicating Banner's already tormented existence. However, a breakthrough in Banner's research leads him to believe that he can control the Hulk's power without losing himself. Desperate to free himself from his monstrous curse, he tests his theory, unleashing a new version of the Hulk, one more formidable and intelligent than ever before. In a thrilling climax, the Hulk battles Blonsky, now transformed into the monstrous Abomination, tearing through the streets of Harlem in an epic showdown.

Leterrier's skillful direction keeps the action intense and captivating, but it is the emotional depth beneath the surface that elevates this film above mere superhero spectacle.

"The Incredible Hulk" delves into profound themes of identity and the consequences of unchecked rage, inviting viewers to question the nature of humanity itself. Norton's nuanced portrayal of Banner captures the character's vulnerability, torment, and ultimate redemption, delivering a performance that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll. With its poignant exploration of the human condition, Leterrier's vision of "The Incredible Hulk" is a thoughtful addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reminding us that even the strongest among us carry deep-seeded struggles that require understanding, compassion, and, above all, acceptance.

29 Nov 2023Zodiac (2007) Revisit ft. Adam Hitchcock01:11:38

Dana and Tom and Adam Hitchcock (The Streaming Circuit podcast) revisit the true crime thriller, Zodiac (2007): directed by David Fincher, written by James Vanderbilt, music by David Shire, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., and Mark Ruffalo.

Plot Summary: In "Zodiac," director David Fincher crafts a meticulously layered thriller that unravels the cryptic enigma of the Zodiac Killer, a real-life serial murderer who terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film weaves together the lives of three individuals – a tenacious newspaper cartoonist (Jake Gyllenhaal), a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo), and a brilliant but tormented crime reporter (Robert Downey Jr.) – all united in their pursuit of the elusive Zodiac.

Fincher masterfully captures the haunting atmosphere of the era, immersing the audience in a world of paranoia and uncertainty. The film also expertly navigates the shifting dynamics between obsession, professional duty, and personal sacrifice, as the characters become entangled in the web of the Zodiac's cryptic messages and gruesome crimes.

Gyllenhaal delivers a compelling performance as the cartoonist-turned-amateur sleuth, conveying the psychological toll of an obsession that threatens to consume him; Ruffalo brings a gritty authenticity to his role, reflecting the frustration and determination of law enforcement; and Downey injects a dose of wit and charisma into the mix, embodying the pitfalls of journalistic ambition.

"Zodiac" transcends the conventions of a traditional crime thriller, delving into the psychological toll of an unsolved mystery on those who dedicate their lives to solving it. It's a chilling exploration of the human cost of obsession and the lingering shadows of unresolved mysteries.

12 Jan 2022Singin' In The Rain (1952)00:57:42

Dana and Tom are back for Season 3 and start with both their favorite musical and possibly the best movie musical of all-time, Singin' In The Rain: starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor.

Plot Summary: Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) is a popular silent film star who barely tolerates his vain, spoiled, conniving, and shallow leading lady, Lina Lamont, (Jean Hagen) though their studio, Monumental Pictures, links them romantically to increase their popularity. Lina is convinced that they are in love, despite Don's protestations otherwise. At the premiere of their latest film, The Royal Rascal, Don is forced to escape his adoring fans and jumps into a passing car driven by Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds). She drops Don off, but not before claiming to be a stage actress and sneering at his "undignified" accomplishments as a movie star. Later, at an after-party, to Don's amusement, Kathy pops out of a mock cake right in front of him, revealing herself to be a chorus girl. Furious at Don's teasing, she throws a cake at him, accidentally hitting Lina in the face, and then flees. Don becomes smitten with Kathy and a budding romance starts. After rival studio, Warner Bros., has an enormous hit with its first talking picture, the 1927 film The Jazz Singer, the studio head (Millard Mitchell) decides he has no choice but to convert the next Lockwood and Lamont film, The Dueling Cavalier, into a "talkie", but the initial preview screening is a disaster. Don and Kathy, aided by Don’s musical sidekick, Cosmo Brown (Donald O’Conner), set out to try to save the movie and their careers. Will they succeed or will Lockwood and Lamont be yet more silent film stars sent to the dustbin of history?

31 Jan 2024Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)01:00:47

Dana and Tom discuss the Cold War satire, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964): directed and written by Stanley Kubrick, with Terry Southern and Peter George, music by Laurie Johnson, starring Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, and Slim Pickens.

Plot Summary: In Stanley Kubrick's satirical masterpiece, "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb," the Cold War tension reaches a bizarre crescendo as the United States and the Soviet Union teeter on the brink of nuclear annihilation.

With a darkly comedic touch, Kubrick weaves a tale of political incompetence, military absurdity, and the unpredictable consequences of technological warfare. Peter Sellers delivers a tour de force performance in multiple roles, including the titular Dr. Strangelove, a wheelchair-bound ex-Nazi scientist with a penchant for sinister solutions.

As geopolitical tensions unfold, the film explores the absurdity of mutually assured destruction and the precarious balance between power and chaos. Kubrick's sharp wit and keen eye for irony make "Dr. Strangelove" a timeless commentary on the folly of humanity in the face of its own creation.

12 May 2021The Magnificent Seven (1960)01:19:01

Dana and Tom follow up last week's Seven Samurai discussion with the American adaptation that is the second-most often show TV movie just behind on the Wizard of Oz, the Magnificent Seven (1960): directed by John Sturges and with a Star-Studded cast of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and Eli Wallach, get to know the original team-up movie.

Plot Summary: A gang of bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach) periodically raids a poor Mexican village for food and supplies. After the latest raid, during which Calvera kills a villager, the village leaders decide they have had enough. On the advice of the village elder (Vladimir Sokoloff), they decide to fight back. Taking their few objects of value, three villagers ride to a town just inside the United States border hoping to barter for weapons. They are impressed by Chris Adams (Yul Brynner), a veteran gunslinger, and approach him for advice. Chris suggests they instead hire gunfighters to defend the village, as "men are cheaper than guns." At first agreeing only to help them recruit, Chris eventually decides to lead the group. Despite the meager pay offered, he finds five willing gunmen. At a time when gunslinging days are reaching an end, Adams helps recruit a band of men each with their own reason for taking on what appears to be a lost cause.

In this special episode, the rest of the Duncans join Tom and Dana to celebrate Dana's birthday with a movie that has very sentimental value to Dana, My Fair Lady (1964): directed by George Cukor, written by Alan Jay Lerner, starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

Plot Summary: In this beloved musical, pompous phonetics professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) is so sure of his abilities that he takes it upon himself to transform a Cockney working-class girl into someone who can pass for a cultured member of high society. His subject turns out to be the lovely Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn), who agrees to speech lessons to improve her job prospects. Higgins and Eliza clash, then form an unlikely bond -- one that is threatened by an aristocratic suitor (Jeremy Brett).
